Abstract

The NH2-terminal cytoplasmic domain of a Shaker channel forms a 'ball and chain' structure. The 'chain' tethers the 'ball' to the channel and causes inactivation in the open state. Mammalian Shaker homologues do not exhibit such homologues. The deletion of various domains in the region enables the determination of several mammalian channel functions.
