The crystalline kinetics of newly synthesized transparent [Tb.sup.3} and [Yb.sup.3} codoped oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing Ca[F.sub.2] nanocrystals are described. The observations revealed the crystallization mechanism of Ca[F.sub.2] as a diffusion controlled growth process of needles and plates of finite long dimensions.

Several studies are conducted to determine the Raman response and the soliton self-frequency shift exhibited by the tellurite microstructured fiber. The fiber is shown to demonstrate a continuous soliton wavelength shift from 1582 to 1851.

The various nonlinear tellurite microstructured fibers employed in the broadband wavelength conversion and flattened supercontinuum generation approaches are analyzed. These fibers are shown to be extremely effective and hence can be used for various nonlinear applications.

Tellurite-based glasses are used as the Raman gain medium for slow light generation via stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and its performance is evaluated based on characterization of Raman gain coefficients. The results have shown that the tellurite-based glasses are very good for slow light generation via SRS.

Photodegradation and photocuring effects in the operation of a Tm(super 3+)-doped blue upconversion fiber laser are investigated. The results indicate that a competition between photodegradation and photocuring greatly affects the maximum output power of a blue upconversion fiber laser.

Amorphous fluoride film was prepared by pulsed laser deposition and ultraviolet emissions were enhanced, The enhancement is attributed to a decrease of the Judd-Ofelt parameter omega2 induced by pulsed laser deposition, which precludes the transition rate from F2 to F4 and enhances the energy transfer process and populates the D2 level.

Yb(super 3+) and Er(super 3+) codoped amorphous Zn(sub 0.3)Al(sub 0.25)Pb(sub 0.3)Li(sub 0.09)Yb(sub 0.1)Er(sub 0.01)F(sub 2.37) (ZAPL) film is prepared by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). The upconversion emission properties of the Yb(super 3+) and Er(super 3+) codoped ZAPL film is reported.
