Abstract

Platinum nanocubes and nanopolyhedra with tunable size from 5 to 9 nm are prepared by controlling the reducing rate of metal precursor ions in a one-pot polyol synthesis. Ethylene hydrogenation rates over the Pt nanocrystals are independent of both size and shape, whereas for pyrrole hydrogenation, the nanocubes have increased the ring-opening ability, thus displaying a higher selectivity to n-butylamine as compared to nanopolyhedra.

Study reports that ring opening for pyrrole hydrogenation is distinctly different for Pt nanoparticles smaller than 2 nm. The findings add fundamental insight into hydrodenitrogenation chemistry important for fuel processing.

Abstract

The highly selective synthesis of catalytically active, monodisperse Rh nanocubes (NCs) is described by using a seedless polyol method. The {100} faces of the Rh NCs are stabilized by chemically adsorbed [Br.sup.-] ions from trimethyl(tetradecyl)ammonium bromide (TTAB).
