Trends affecting input, work-in-progress and output inventories in Finland's manufacturing sector during the period following the first oil crisis, that is, 1975-1991, was examined. Total inventory volume was found to have dropped by 32% during the period, with input, work-in-progress and ouput inventories falling by 44%, 41% and 12%, respectively. Production volume, meanwhile, rose by 2.2% yearly and by 53% during the period analyzed. These developments were attributed to high real interest rates and labor costs and the implementation of novel manufacturing, logistical and materials management philosophies.
