The use of electrochemical stimuli to manipulate intercomponent interactions is a powerful method for controlling and observing submolecular motion in hydrogen bonded molecular shuttles. In a benzylic amide macrocycle-based rotaxane system, the motion resulting from reduction and reoxidation of the naphthalimide station was unequivocally shown to be reversible shuttling of the macrocycle along the thread.

A simple, inexpensive, conceptually uncomplicated student experiment involving adsorption of polyoxometalate on graphite electrodes has been developed for teaching surface electrochemistry. The experiment has been used for fourth-year students. Among things students will become familiar with are cyclic voltammetry, capacitive current, and spontaneous chemisorption. Much research is being done in the area of modified electrodes and students should be introduced to it.

The synthesis, structures and magnetic properties of some new [Fe.sup.III] and [Fe.sup.II] complexes are described, which has shown the rich coordination chemistry of the multidentate hydrazido salicyl derivative ligands bearing sulfur groups. The studies have shown an unexpected spontaneous reduction of the new [Fe.sup.III][(HL).sub.2]Cl,S complex to the new [Fe.sup.II][([H.sub.2]L).sub.2][Cl.sub.2] high-spin mononuclear complex.

Residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) of the wild-type nuclease are compared with those of a fragment that retains a folded OB-fold subdomain structure despite missing the last 47 o 149 residues. The results suggested that RDCs are more sensitive to structural changes in folded than unfolded proteins.
