Little research has yet been done on therapeutic communication techniques (TCT) toward the elderly on care workers in Japan. Therefore, this study will explore 1) whether experienced care workers (ECW) and inexperienced care workers (IECW) have knowledge of TCT, and 2) what kinds of TCT are used the most toward the elderly. The questionnaire was completed by 11 ECW (27. l (infinity)}9.6yrs) and 36 IECW (36. 1 [infinity]} 13.8yrs) in a Nursing home. The results show that 36.4% of ECW and 19.4% oflECW have heard about TCT. Only 5.6% of IECW had received training TCT. Both ECW and IECW used listening and braod opening (22.2 (infinity)' 66.1%) the most. None of ECW used reflection and focusing. IECW did not use silence. This study suggests that care workers need to be trained to use TCT effectively toward the elderly in Japan.
