Abstract

The surface tension and viscosity of tantalum was measured with a vacuum electrostatic levitation furnace over temperature ranges covering both superheated and undercooled phases. Electrostatic levitation and multibeam radiative heating overcame contamination and sample position stability problems associated with handling of liquid tantalum.

Abstract

The viscosity of tungsten, the highest melting point metal (3695K), measured by a levitation technique is reported. The data obtained is found to agree with the proposed theoretical and empirical models of liquid metals but presents atypical temperature dependence, which suggests a basic change in the mechanism of momentum transfer.
