Abstract

The reaction between NaOH and rare earth metal oxides yields corresponding isostructural cuprates RCu204, where R is La, Nd, Sm or Eu. The average copper oxidation state is Cu(2.5+) in these highly oxidized compounds. Power X-ray and neutron-diffraction data help study the crystal structure of these compounds and Rietveld profile analysis helps refine the crystal structures. Increase in magnetization at low temperatures suggests magnetic ordering of copper spins and negative Weiss constants for LaCu204 and NdCu204 suggest the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions.
