Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory calculations are used for studying the adsorption of a simple ketone to the silicon (001) surface. The use of the carbonyl functional group to tether organic molecules to silicon has led to enhanced stability of the adsorbates with respect to current-voltage characterization.

Abstract

A combined atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory study of the adsorption, dissociation and surface diffusion of phosphine (PH(sub 3)) on Si(001) is described. It is shown that PH(sub 3) dissociates upon adsorption to Si(001) at room temperature to produce both PH2+H and PH+2H.
