The synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals of PbS, ZnS, CdS, and MnS is reported through a facile and inexpensive synthetic process. The synthetic procedure developed, offers several important, advantageous features for the synthesis of sulfide nanocrystals.

The synthesis of Pd-Au bimetallic nanocrystals with controlled morphologies by a one-step seeded-growth method is described. The morphological control has helped in tuning the localized surface plasmon resonance peaks of Pd-Au bimetallic nanostructures in the visible region.

A simple method of synthesizing a large quantity of TiO(sub 2) nanorods was developed. Highly crystalline and monodisperse tetragonal Zirconia nanoparticles with a particle size of 4 nm were synthesized by the nonhydrolytic sol-gel reaction between zirconium(IV) isopropoxide and zirconium(IV) chloride at 340 degree centigrade. Smaller 3nm sized zirconia nanoparticles were synthesized using zirconium(IV) bromide as a precursor.

Samarium oxide or samaria (Sm2O3) nanowires and nanoplates, with a single unit cell thickness (1.1nm), are synthesized. These rectangular shaped nanowires and nanoplates are synthesized from the thermal decomposition of hydrated samarium(III) acetate in the presence of oleylamine and a long-chain carboxylic acid under argon atmosphere.
