Cytochrome c-550(s), one of the three membrane-bound proteins of the organism Nitrobacter winogradskyi, is homologous to mitochondrial cytochrome c. In its presence, the liposomes containing the incorporated cytochrome a1c1, cytochrome aa3 and nitrite exhibit high nitrite oxidase activity. This reveals the role of cytochrome c in mediating electron transfer between nitrite cytochrome c oxido reductase and cytochrome c oxidase. Nitrite-cytochrome c oxidoreductase exhibits enzymatic activity at pH8. At pH 6, it exhibits cytochrome c-nitrate oxidoreductase activity.
