Abstract

Local area networks (LANs) that use radio frequencies to transmit data are about to explode on the scene. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has set aside a 26MHz-wide band of frequencies in the 902 to 928MHz range for use by any transmitters using less than a few watts, which can be operated in any mode on this band. The only caveats are that users must accept any interference encountered and the FCC will not attempt to license or coordinate use of this band in any way. Radio LANs will have to compete with remote telephones and other devices on this band, creating a number of problems. While supporters of radio LANs claim different coding schemes will keep systems from interfering with each other, the truth is that any receiver will be 'captured' by the strongest signal, regardless of the coding scheme. And even if the stronger signal happens to be the 'right' signal, it can still be garbled by the competing signal. This does not even take into account the problems of data theft via radio, environmental conditions, interference from and with other radio services, and other facts of radio operation. The time to deal with these issues is now, before radio LANs proliferate, and vendors of radio LANs must try to resolve the issues among them.

Almost 90 percent of all valves are still actuated pneumatically, and will continue to be until the safety and economy of pneumatic systems is equaled. Computer-controlled pneumatics require pneumatic-to-current devices (P-I) on the input and current-to-pneumatic (I-P) on the output. A large assortment of products is available for these applications. It is often more cost-effective to install P-Is between existing pneumatic transmitters and digital control systems than to replace all the pneumatic devices with electronics.

Smart transmitters increase access to accurate process data. They contain a microprocessor that can improve sensor performance and access to remote communications through a hand-held interface device or control system. The microprocessor can also improve the performance of a sensor by characterization. Decisions about smart instruments purchases require care. Plant instrumentation philosophy must be decided on before selecting a smart vendor because of the exclusivity of most vendor protocols. Smart transmitters are here to stay; in addition to the enhanced performance they provide, users can look forward to price reductions for these devices.
