Issues related to the life of 20th-century author and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre are examined, focusing on a presentation of a summary of key events in the man's life. Topics include his boyhood; his poor eyesight, those who bullied him as a child; his friend at school, Paul Nizan; his overbearing step-father; his wartime experiences, including his escape from a German prison; themes of his fiction; his fame; and his account of Cuba in the early 1960s.

Tourism and recreation are important economic activities which are major agents of change globally and, more specifically, in wetland areas. There is a regular round of activities associated with the seasons and anything which influences operating seasons is likely to have substantial consequences for tourism businesses. Atmospheric conditions influence both whether or not people will participate as well as the quality of the experience. In marine coasts, wetland recreations may be threatened by rising sea levels but recreation in inland water bodies may be affected more by deficiencies rather than superabundance of water. Marinas and recreational boating are harmed by extremes of both high and low water, particularly the latter which is the most likely situation under global climate change. Two main groups can be considered with respect to the potential to adapt to climate change. These are the participants themselves and the businesses which cater to them. The Bali Sustainable Development project is an excellent opportunity to test the viability of sustainable development. Tourism is the major industry in this Indonesian island and related development has mostly occurred in coastal areas. The effect of this development on beach erosion patterns and coral reefs has been substantial.

The Bathurst barren-ground caribou herd was chosen as the focus of a study of the possible effects of a changed climate on hunting of a caribou herd in the Northwest Territories. Four climate change scenarios representing conditions under a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations were used in the study. The locations of the Bathurst herd throughout the year were determined, and the 1951 to 1980 average monthly temperatures and total monthly precipitation amounts were ascertained at those locations. The four climate change scenarios were applied, with changes in average monthly temperatures and in total monthly precipitation amounts noted. Analyses indicate a possible increase in winter snowfall, and increased insect harassment of caribou in the summer, due to an increase in average monthly temperatures. The reduced accessibility and health of caribou in the Bathurst herd suggest a reduced hunting potential. Management options are briefly discussed.

This article examines gender roles in tourism employment in Bali, Indonesia through two case studies. The first considers the employment of women in tourism in a newly-emerging destination area in the interior of the island. The second examines the employment of both women and men in selected tourism occupations in two established coastal resorts. While tourism has provided both women and men with greater occupational choices, there is differential access by gender to tourism employment in Bali. Furthermore, in the formal sector, women may be required to have superior qualifications and may be paid less than men in similar positions. Prospects of global climatic change may present challenging physical, biological and managerial problems for Canadian national parks. A study was undertaken to assess the possible implications of climatic warming on water-based recreation activities of Nahanni National Park Reserve (NNPR). Significant increases in mean annual temperature and moderate increases in precipitation totals are expected for the park under a doubling of C[O.sub.2]. Under such conditions, hydrological changes would have little effect on the execution of river recreation, whereas forest fire and ecological changes would likely have significant impacts on the experience of river recreation. Two complementary management strategies, ecological and visitor monitoring, are proposed to respond to uncertainties associated with environmental change.
