The synthesis and characterization of a series of water-soluble 2-(2'-arylsulfonamidophenyl)benzimidazole derivatives containing electron-donating and accepting groups attached to various positions of the fluorophore [pi]-system in aqueous solution are described. The analysis has described the substituent effects on the photophysical properties of this class of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorophores in an aqueous environment and has also given guidelines for designing emission ratiometric pH.

Transmission characteristics were studied for hybrid structures combining defects and multiple heterostructures. The study shows that the nontransmission frequency range can be substantially enlarged and the phenomenon of multiple-channeled filtering can be realized by adjusting the number, position, and size of the defects.

The synthesis of a novel type of blue light-emitting spiro-bridged ladder-type poly(p-phenylene) (LPPP) is reported. The ladder-type polymer obtained exhibited excellent thermal and optical stability.

A molecular design approach which could increase the fluorescence brightness ([eta][delta]), defined by the product of TPA cross section [delta] and emission quantum yield [eta] upon metal-ion binding in a polar environment is presented.

Photophysical and quantum chemical studies are used to elucidate the origin of the substituent-dependent fluorescence properties of 2-(2'-arylsulfonamidophenyl)benzimidazole class of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorophores. The results have provided guidelines for fine-tuning of the emission properties of this class of ESIPT fluorophores.
