The present paper investigates droplet and aerosol emission from the human respiratory function by numerical and experimental methods, which is analyzed at the worst-case scenario, a violent sneeze without a face covering. The research findings develop the understanding of airborne disease transmission relevant to COVID-19, its recent variants, and other airborne pathogens. A human sneeze is studied using a multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model using detached eddy simulation coupled to the emission of droplets that break up, evaporate, and disperse. The model provides one of the first experimental benchmarks of CFD predictions of a human sneeze event. The experiments optically capture aerosols and droplets and are processed to provide spatiotemporal data to validate the CFD model. Under the context of large random uncertainty, the studies indicate the reasonable correlation of CFD prediction with experimental measurements using velocity profiles and exposure levels, indicating that the model captures the salient details relevant to pathogen dispersion. Second, the CFD model was extended to study the effect of relative humidity with respect to the Wells curve, providing additional insight into the complexities of evaporation and sedimentation characteristics in the context of turbulent and elevated humidity conditions associated with the sneeze. The CFD results indicated correlation with the Wells curve with additional insight into features, leading to non-conservative aspects associated with increased suspension time. These factors are found to be associated with the combination of evaporation and fluid-structure-induced suspension. This effect is studied for various ambient air humidity levels and peaks for lower humidity levels, indicating that the Wells curve may need a buffer in dry climates. The transport of virus-laden aerosols from a host to a susceptible person is governed by complex turbulent airflow and physics related to breathing, coughing and sneezing, mechanical and passive ventilation, thermal buoyancy effects, surface deposition, masks, and air filtration. In this paper, we study the infection risk via airborne transmission on an urban bus using unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and a passive-scalar model of the virus-laden aerosol concentration. Results from these simulations are directly compared to the widely used well-mixed model and show significant differences in the concentration field and number of inhaled particles. Specifically, in the limit of low mechanical ventilation rates, the well-mixed model will overpredict the concentration far from the infected passenger and substantially underpredict the concentration near the infected passenger. Heating and ventilation air conditioning systems in hospitals (cleanroom HVAC systems) are used to control the transmission/spreading of airborne diseases such as COVID-19. Air exiting from these systems may contribute to the spreading of coronavirus droplets outside of hospitals. Some research studies indicate that the shortest time of survival of SARS-CoV-2 in aerosol form (as droplets in the air) is four hours and the virus becomes inactive above 60 °C air temperature. Therefore, SARS-CoV-2 droplets cannot exit from the exhaust duct if the temperature is above 60 °C. At the condenser, heat is dissipated in the form of hot air which could be utilized to warm the exhaust air. The objective of this paper is to establish a novel technique for eliminating SARS-CoV-2 from cleanroom HVAC systems using the recovered heat of exhaust air. In this paper, micromagnetic analysis of an array of long magnetic nanowires (NWs) embedded in a nonmagnetic matrix is performed. It is found that for NWs with diameters on the order of a hundred nanometers, the anisotropy and exchange energies are negligible, so the total free energy is a sum of the Zeeman and magnetostatic energies. The minimum magnetostatic energy corresponds to the maximum Zeeman energy, whereby half of the NWs are magnetized parallel to the external field, while the rest of the NWs are magnetized antiparallel to the external fields. The study shows a vortex behavior of the magnetic moments in the magnetization reversal process. Additionally, the hysteresis loop area of the nanocomposite is inversely proportional to the NW diameter in the range from 20 to 200 nm. The results pave the way for designing of NW-based devices such as optimized magnetic sensors for biomedical applications with a trade-off between miniaturization and energy loss.

A whispering gallery mode resonator based magnetometer using chip-scale glass microspherical shells is described. A neodynium micro-magnet is elastically coupled and integrated on top of the microspherical shell structure that enables transduction of the magnetic force experienced by the magnet in external magnetic fields into an optical resonance frequency shift. High quality factor optical microspherical shell resonators with ultra-smooth surfaces have been successfully fabricated and integrated with magnets to achieve Q-factors of greater than 1.1 × 10 7 and have shown a resonance shift of 1.43 GHz/mT (or 4.0 pm/mT) at 760 nm wavelength. The main mode of action is mechanical deformation of the microbubble with a minor contribution from the photoelastic effect. An experimental limit of detection of 60 nT Hz -1/2 at 100 Hz is demonstrated. A theoretical thermorefractive limited detection limit of 52 pT Hz -1/2 at 100 Hz is calculated from the experimentally derived sensitivity. The paper describes the mode of action, sensitivity and limit of detection is evaluated for the chip-scale whispering gallery mode magnetometer.

This paper proposes a novel permanent magnet (PM) motor for high torque performance, in which hybrid PM material and asymmetric rotor design are applied. The hybrid PM material is adopted to reduce the consumption of rare-earth PM because ferrite PM is assisted to enhance the torque production. Meanwhile, the rotor structure is designed to be asymmetric by shifting the surface-insert PM (SPM), which is used to improve the torque performance, including average torque and torque ripple. Moreover, the reasons for improvement of the torque performance are explained by evaluation and analysis of the performances of the proposed motor. Compared with SPM motor and V-type motor, the merit of high utilization ratio of rare-earth PM is also confirmed, showing that the proposed motor can offer higher torque density and lower torque ripple simultaneously with less consumption of rare-earth PM.

This paper proposes a new electromechanical energy conversion system, called Field Modulated Magnetic Screw (FMMS) as a high force density linear actuator for artificial heart. This device is based on the concept of magnetic screw and linear magnetic gear. The proposed FMMS consists of three parts with the outer and inner carrying the radially magnetized helically permanent-magnet (PM), and the intermediate having a set of helically ferromagnetic pole pieces, which modulate the magnetic fields produced by the PMs. The configuration of the newly designed FMMS is presented and its electromagnetic performances are analyzed by using the finite-element analysis, verifying the advantages of the proposed structure.

Aiming at the ultra high speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) supported by gas foil bearings (GFBs), this paper calculates the transient line starting of the motor. Firstly, the start effect of the rotor composed of cylindrical PM and stainless steel sleeve is studied. Then, in order to enhance the start torque, copper ring, nickel ring and copper squirrel-cage are introduced in the rotor and their start effect are analysed, respectively. It can be found that the rotor including nickel ring can be accelerated to set speed, but all the other rotors are failed due to the higher PM and braking torques. It can be concluded that some material owning slight large relative permeability can be applied in the rotor to reduce the PM field and contribute to start by using the line-start method.

The electrical contact is an important phenomenon that should be given into consideration to achieve better performance and long term reliability for the design of devices. Based upon this importance, the electrical contact interface has been visualized as a ''3D Contact Map'' and used in order to investigate the contact asperities. The contact asperities describe the structures above and below the contact spots (the contact spots define the 3D contact map) to the two conductors which make the contact system. The contact asperities require the discretization of the 3D microstructures of the contact system into voxels. A contact analysis approach has been developed and introduced in this paper which shows the way to the 3D visualization of the contact asperities of a given contact system. For the discretization of 3D microstructure of contact system into voxels, X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) method is used in order to collect the data of a 250 V , 16 A rated AC single pole rocker switch which is used as a contact system for investigation.
