Paper is an ideal substrate for the development of flexible and environmentally sustainable ubiquitous electronic systems. When combined with nanomaterial-based devices, it can be harnessed for various Internet-of-Things applications, ranging from wearable electronics to smart packaging. However, paper remains a challenging substrate for electronics due to its rough and porous nature. In addition, the absence of established fabrication methods is impeding its utilization in wearable applications. Unlike other paper-based electronics with added layers, in this study, we present a scalable spray-lithography on a commercial paper substrate. We present a non-vacuum spray-lithography of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) single-layer graphene (SLG), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and perovskite quantum dots (QDs) on a paper substrate. This approach combines the advantages of two large-area techniques: CVD and spray-coating. The first technique allows for the growth of SLG, while the second enables the spray coating of a mask to pattern CVD SLG, electrodes (CNTs), and photoactive (QDs) layers. We harness the advantages of perovskite QDs in photodetection, leveraging their strong absorption coefficients. Integrating them with the graphene enhances the photoconductive gain mechanism, leading to high external responsivity. The presented device shows high external responsivity of ∼520 A W -1 at 405 nm at <1 V bias due to the photoconductive gain mechanism. The prepared paper-based photodetectors (PDs) achieve an external responsivity of 520 A W -1 under 405 nm illumination at <1 V operating voltage. To the best of our knowledge, our devices have the highest external responsivity among paper-based PDs. By fabricating arrays of PDs on a paper substrate in the air, this work highlights the potential of this scalable approach for enabling ubiquitous electronics on paper., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

There is an urgent need to develop low cost electrochemical sensors wherein the sensor can be disposed after recording data, thereby eliminating the issue of inaccuracy arising from repeated sensing measurements, which plagues most conventional electrochemical sensors. This work is the first demonstration of a NiSe 2 based disposable, one time use electrochemical glucose sensor in bio-mimicking real samples wherein NiSe 2 was hydrothermally grown NiSe 2 on a biodegradable cellulose paper. Both physicochemical (x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscope) and electrochemical (impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV)) characterization techniques confirmed the growth and presence of NiSe 2 on a cellulose paper. Electrochemical techniques like CV and amperometric (i-t) were utilized for the selective and sensitive oxidation of glucose. The results suggests that the proposed NiSe 2 sensor is effective in a linear range of 0.1-1 mM with fast response time (3.9 s), low detection limit (24.8 ± 0.1 μM) and high sensitivity (0.25 A M -1 cm -2 ) at a potential applied (E app  = 0.55 V versus Ag∣AgCl). Prior to the real sample analyses i.e. glucose detection in human urine, the fabricated NiSe 2 sensor was tested for selectivity towards glucose in co-existing interferences (dopamine, ascorbic acid, uric acid, urea, sodium chloride, fructose, lactose and cysteine). Finally, glucose in artificial blood serum and urine samples was demonstrated with the fabricated NiSe 2 sensor and the results are comparable to the conventional laboratory methods. The present methodology presents a novel possibility towards the design of next generation, affordable point-of-care devices for a broad range of clinical diagnostics.

Multifunctional electronics are attracting great interest with the increasing demand and fast development of wearable electronic devices. Here, we describe an epidermal strain sensor based on an all-carbon conductive network made from multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) impregnated with poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) matrix through a vacuum filtration process. An ultrasonication treatment was performed to complete the penetration of PDMS resin in seconds. The entangled and overlapped MWCNT network largely enhances the electrical conductivity (1430 S m -1 ), uniformity (remaining stable on different layers), reliable sensing range (up to 80% strain), and cyclic stability of the strain sensor. The homogeneous dispersion of MWCNTs within the PDMS matrix leads to a strong interaction between the two phases and greatly improves the mechanical stability (ca. 160% strain at fracture). The flexible, reversible and ultrathin (<100 μm) film can be directly attached on human skin as epidermal strain sensors for high accuracy and real-time human motion detection.

Disposable analytical devices for developing sensitive and label-free monitoring of cancerous cells would be attractive for cancer research. Here, paper-based electroanalytical devices based on impedance spectrometry were applied for the study of K562 cells and the toxic effect of anticancer drugs. The proposed device integrating gold nanorods modified ITO electrodes could provide a biocompatible surface for immobilization of living cells maintaining their bioactivity. The impedance results exhibited good correlation to the logarithmic value of cell numbers ranging from 7.5 × 10(2) to 3.9 × 10(6) cells mL(-1) with a detection limit of 500 cells mL(-1). Furthermore, this strategy was used to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of arsenic trioxide and cyclophosphamide. Results obtained by the impedimetric method correlate well with the conventional cell viability assay. Cells exposed to drugs exhibited a prominent reduction of impedance data, showing an inverse dose-dependent relationship. This simple, cost-effective and portable paper-based electrochemical analytical device could provide a new impedance platform for applications in monitoring cell behavior, pharmacological studies and toxicological analyses.

There is a strong interest in the use of biopolymers in the electronic and biomedical industries, mainly towards low-cost applications. The possibility of developing entirely new kinds of products based on cellulose is of current interest, in order to enhance and to add new functionalities to conventional paper-based products. We present our results towards the development of paper-based microfluidics for molecular diagnostic testing. Paper properties were evaluated and compared to nitrocellulose, the most commonly used material in lateral flow and other rapid tests. Focusing on the use of paper as a substrate for microfluidic applications, through an eco-friendly wax-printing technology, we present three main and distinct colorimetric approaches: (i) enzymatic reactions (glucose detection); (ii) immunoassays (antibodies anti-Leishmania detection); (iii) nucleic acid sequence identification (Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex detection). Colorimetric glucose quantification was achieved through enzymatic reactions performed within specific zones of the paper-based device. The colouration achieved increased with growing glucose concentration and was highly homogeneous, covering all the surface of the paper reaction zones in a 3D sensor format. These devices showed a major advantage when compared to the 2D lateral flow glucose sensors, where some carryover of the coloured products usually occurs. The detection of anti-Leishmania antibodies in canine sera was conceptually achieved using a paper-based 96-well enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay format. However, optimization is still needed for this test, regarding the efficiency of the immobilization of antigens on the cellulose fibres. The detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis nucleic acids integrated with a non-cross-linking gold nanoprobe detection scheme was also achieved in a wax-printed 384-well paper-based microplate, by the hybridization with a species-specific probe. The obtained results with the above-mentioned proof-of-concept sensors are thus promising towards the future development of simple and cost-effective paper-based diagnostic devices.

In this study, two different supramolecular recognition architectures for impedimetric detection of DNA hybridization have been formed on disposable paper-supported inkjet-printed gold electrodes. The gold electrodes were fabricated using a gold nanoparticle based ink. The first recognition architecture consists of subsequent layers of biotinylated self-assembly monolayer (SAM), streptavidin and biotinylated DNA probe. The other recognition architecture is constructed by immobilization of thiol-functionalized DNA probe (HS-DNA) and subsequent backfill with 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (MUOH) SAM. The binding capacity and selectivity of the recognition architectures were examined by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements. SPR results showed that the HS-DNA/MUOH system had a higher binding capacity for the complementary DNA target. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements showed that the hybridization can be detected with impedimetric spectroscopy in picomol range for both systems. EIS signal indicated a good selectivity for both recognition architectures, whereas SPR showed very high unspecific binding for the HS-DNA/MUOH system. The factors affecting the impedance signal were interpreted in terms of the complexity of the supramolecular architecture. The more complex architecture acts as a less ideal capacitive sensor and the impedance signal is dominated by the resistive elements.

Flexible and highly conductive single-walled carbon nanotube/polycellulose papers (SWCNT/PPs) were developed as current collectors for lithium-ion batteries by a simple and scalable process. The flexible electrodes based on SWCNT/PP conductors consisted of a unique three-dimensional interwoven structure of electrode materials and cellulose fibers with CNTs and exhibited flexibility, good electrochemical performance and excellent cyclic stability. Full cells using Li(4)Ti(5)O(12) and LiFePO(4) electrodes based on SWCNT/PPs showed a first discharge capacity of 153.5 mA h g(-1) with Coulombic efficiencies of 90.6% at 0.1 C and discharge capacity of 102.6 mA h g(-1) at high rate (10 C). Full cells based SWCNT/PP conductors showed higher capacities and lower electrochemical interfacial resistance compared to metallic current collectors. Half cells using anatase TiO(2) hierarchical spheres based on SWCNT/PP conductors also exhibited outstanding electrochemical performance, verifying the stability of SWCNT/PP conductors to various electrode materials. Our results demonstrated the potential versatility of composite electrodes and conductive SWCNT/PPs for flexible and portable micropower devices.

This paper shows that we can print on paper simple high-frequency electronic devices such as resistances, capacitances or inductances, with values that can be changed in a controllable manner by an applied dc voltage. This tunability is achieved with the help of an ink containing functionalized carbon nanotubes and water. After the water is evaporated from the paper, the nanotubes remain steadily imprinted on paper, showing a semiconducting behavior and tunable electrical properties.

Composite nanocoating of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT-PSS) and aqueous dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNT-PSS) on lignocellulose wood microfibers has been developed to make conductive microfibers and paper sheets. To construct the multilayers on wood microfibers, cationic poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) has been used in alternate deposition with anionic conductive PEDOT-PSS and solubilized CNT-PSS. Using a Keithley microprobe measurement system, current-voltage measurements have been carried out on single composite microfibers after deposition of each layer to optimize the electrical properties of the coated microfibers. The conductivity of the resultant wood microfibers was in the range of 10(-2)-2 S cm(-1) depending on the architecture of the coated layer. Further, the conductivity of the coated wood microfibers increased up to 20 S cm(-1) by sandwiching multilayers of conductive co-polymer PEDOT-PSS with CNT-PSS through a polycation (PEI) interlayer. Moreover, paper hand sheets were manufactured from these coated wood microfibers with conductivity ranging from 1 to 20 S cm(-1). A paper composite structure consisting of conductive/dielectric/conductive layers that acts as a capacitor has also been fabricated and is reported.
