Herein, the nanolignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF)-enabled ratiometric fluorescent bio-nanocomposite film is developed. Interestingly, the inclusion of LCNF in the cellulose-based film enhances the detecting performance of food freshness, such as high sensitivity to biogenic amines (BAs) (limit of detection (LOD) of up to 1.83 ppm) and ultrahigh discernible fluorescence color difference (ΔE = 113.11). The underlying mechanisms are the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), π - π interaction, and cation - π interaction between LCNF and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), as well as the increased hydrophobicity due to lignin, which increases the interactions of amines with FITC. Its color stability (up to 28 days) and mechanical property (49.4 Mpa) are simultaneously improved. Furthermore, a smartphone based detecting platform is developed to achieve access to food safety. Chemical modification is a reliable and efficient strategy for designing cellulose-based functional materials. Herein, porous quaternized cellulose beads (QCBs) as cationic superabsorbent were fabricated by homogeneous in-situ chemical grafting cellulose molecular chains with glycidyl trimethylammonium chloride (GTAC) in tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH)/urea aqueous solution followed by acetic acid induced regeneration. The influence of GTAC dosage on the physicochemical-structural properties of cationic QCBs was deeply investigated. Results revealed that cotton liner could well-dissolved in TEAOH/urea aqueous solution, leading to a homogeneous and efficient quaternization medium for cellulose, thereby giving the high DS and positive charge density for quaternized cellulose. NMR results demonstrated the main substitution of GTAC groups at 2-OH and 6-OH positions of the cellulose chains during quaternization reaction. With increasing GTAC dosage, the network skeleton of QCBs gradually transformed from thick fibrils to thin aggregates, as well as enhanced pore volumes and hydrophilicity. Accordingly, QCBs-1.5 with high pore volume (99.70 cm 3 /g) exhibited excellent absorption capacity and efficiency, absorbing 122.32 g of water and 0.45 g of moisture per gram of the beads in 20 min. The green synthesis strategy for cellulose-containing hydrogel electrolytes is significant for effectively managing resources, energy, and environmental concerns in the contemporary world. Herein, we propose an all-green strategy using AlCl 3 /ZnCl 2 /H 2 O solvent to create cellulose/polyacrylamide-based hydrogel (AZ-Cel/PAM) with expanded hierarchical topologies. The aqueous AlCl 3 /ZnCl 2 facilitates the efficient dissolution of cellulose at room temperature, and the dispersed Al 3+ -Zn 2+ ions autocatalytic system catalyzes in-situ polymerization of acrylamide (AM) monomer. This expands the AM network within the cellulose framework, forming multiple bonding interactions and stable ion channels. The resulting hybrid hydrogel exhibits improved mechanical properties (tensile strength of 56.54 kPa and compressive strength of 359.43 kPa) and enhanced ionic conductivity (1.99 S/m). Furthermore, it also demonstrates excellent adhesion, freeze resistance (-45 °C), and water retention capabilities. Quantum simulations further clarify the mechanical composition and ion transport mechanism of AZ-Cel/PAM hydrogels. The assembled supercapacitor with the hydrogel electrolyte, demonstrates an ideal area-specific capacitance of 203.80 mF/cm 2 . The production of hydrogen through seawater electrolysis has recently garnered increasing concern. However, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by alkaline seawater electrocatalysis is severely impeded by the slow H 2 O adsorption and H* binding kinetics at industrial current densities. Herein, a face-centered cubic/hexagonal close packed (fcc/hcp) NiRu alloy heterojunction was fabricated on Ni foam (N doped NiRu-inf/NF) by a low-temperature nitrogen plasma activation. Simultaneously, nitrogen atoms are introduced into the alloy to facilitate d-p hybridization. When N doped NiRu-inf/NF is integrated into a dual-electrode cell for urea-assisted seawater electrolysis, it achieves 100 mA cm -2 with an ultra-low voltage of 1.36 V and excellent stability. Utilizing advanced multiple channels for information encryption offers a powerful strategy to achieve high-capacity and highly secure data protection. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) offer a sustainable resource for developing information protection materials. In this study, we present an approach that is easy to implement and adapt for the covalent attachment of various fluorescence molecules onto the surface of CNCs using the Mannich reaction in aqueous-based medium. Through the use of the Mannich reaction-based surface modification technique, we successfully achieved multi-color fluorescence in the resulting CNCs. The resulting CNC derivatives were thoroughly characterized by two dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance (2D HSQC NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy. Notably, the optical properties of CNCs were well maintained after modification, resulting in films exhibiting blue and red structural colors. This enables the engineering of highly programmable and securely encoded anti-counterfeit labels. Moreover, subsequent coating of the modified CNCs with MXene yielded a highly secure encrypted matrix, offering advanced security and encryption capabilities under ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths. Robust, conductive and flexible electrode materials have been the focus of attention in portable, wearable electronics. However, it is still a significant challenge to achieve synergistic development of multiple properties simultaneously. Herein, we propose a combination of microscale design and nanostructures strategy to prepare MXene/cellulose nanofiber-poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiphoenes):polystyrene sulfonate (Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNF-PEDOT:PSS, TC-P) hybrid film by a simple in-situ polymerization and vacuum filtration process. CNF serves as the supporting skeleton of PEDOT:PSS, effectively mitigating its self-aggregation and structural deformation due to the expansion/contraction of the polymer network. And the CNF-PEDOT:PSS composite is capable to open up the interlayer space of Ti 3 C 2 T x , which reduces the self-stacking of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. The strong interactions among the three components enable the hybrid film electrode to possess both flexibility and high electrochemical properties. As a result, the film electrode exhibits a remarkable tensile strength of 77.4 MPa and an excellent conductivity of 162.5 S cm -1 , as well as an outstanding areal specific capacitance of 896 mF cm -2 at 4 mA cm -2 . Moreover, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) device displays a large areal energy density of 62 µWh cm -2 at a power density of 800 µW cm -2 and demonstrates a long cycle life with 85.1 % capacitance retention after 10,000 GCD cycles. Due to the unsatisfactory mechanical properties of natural polymer-based conductive hydrogels, their applications are limited. Shaanxi Biangbiang noodles can be toughened by applying external mechanical forces through stretching and beating movements; this process provides inspiration for the preparation of high-strength hydrogels. In this paper, we propose a strategy for the preparation of ultrastrong and ultratough conductive hydrogels by directional prestretching and solvent exchange. Neatly arranged fiber bundles containing many intermolecular hydrogen bonds and metal ion coordination bonds are successfully constructed inside the prepared hydrogels. The hydrogel has exceptional mechanical properties, with a fracture stress exceeding 50 MPa, fracture strain approaching 105 %, fracture toughness exceeding 30 MJ m -3 , and high conductivity reaching 11.738 ± 0.06 mS m -1 . Impressively, the hydrogel can maintain its high mechanical properties after being frozen at an ultralow temperature of -80 °C for 7 days. Compared with other tough hydrogels, natural tendons and synthetic rubbers, the hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties. The rapid emergence of microfluidic paper-based devices as point-of-care testing (POCT) tools for early disease diagnosis and health monitoring, particularly in resource-limited areas, holds immense potential for enhancing healthcare accessibility. Leveraging the numerous advantages of paper, such as capillary-driven flow, porous structure, hydrophilic functional groups, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility, it has become a pivotal choice for microfluidic substrates. The repertoire of microfluidic paper-based devices includes one-dimensional lateral flow assays (1D LFAs), two-dimensional microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (2D μPADs), and three-dimensional (3D) μPADs. In this comprehensive review, we provide and examine crucial information related to paper substrates, design strategies, and detection methods in multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices. We also investigate potential applications of microfluidic paper-based devices for detecting viruses, metabolites and hormones in non-invasive samples such as human saliva, sweat and urine. Additionally, we delve into capillary-driven flow alternative theoretical models of fluids within the paper to provide guidance. Finally, we critically examine the potential for future developments and address challenges for multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices in advancing noninvasive early diagnosis and health monitoring. This study focuses on the sustainable production of bio-jet fuel through the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of isoeugenol (IE). Properties of two spraying synthesis methods (in situ and ex situ metal doping) with different platinum (Pt) loading percentages. The catalyst was characterised using various techniques such as XAS, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermogravimetric analysis. The HRTEM and FESEM results show the successful preparation of a spherical nanoparticle doped over activated carbon, and Pt was dispersed on the outer shell of the particles. The catalytic HDO of IE showed a high yield and conversion as follows: IE conversion of 100%, liquid-phase mass balance of 95.92%, dihydroeugenol conversion of 99.32%, propylcyclohexane yield of 88.94% and HYD yield of 76.19%. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited high reusability with low metal leaching and high coke resistance for 10 cycles. Thermosets are well known for their advantages such as high stability and chemical resistance. However, developing sustainable thermosets with degradability and recyclability faces several principal challenges, including reconciling the desired characteristics during service with the recycling and reprocessing properties required at the end of life, establishing efficient methods for large-scale synthesis, and aligning with current manufacturing process. Here a general strategy is presented for the on-demand degradation and recycling of thermosets under mild conditions utilizing dynamic precursors with dual-factor-controlled reversibility. Specifically, dynamic triazine crosslinkers are introduced through dynamic nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S N Ar) into the precursor polyols used in polyurethane (PU) synthesis. Upon removal of the catalyst and alcohol, the reversibility of S N Ar is deactivated, allowing for the use of standard PU polymerization techniques such as injection molding, casting, and foaming. The resulting cyanurate-crosslinked PUs maintain high stability and diverse mechanical properties of traditional crosslinked PUs, yet offer the advantage of easy on-demand depolymerization for recycling by activating the reversibility of S N Ar under specific but mild conditions-a combination of base, alcohol, and mild heat. Porphyromonas gingivalis causes various health issues through oral infections. This study investigates the antibacterial activities of food-derived dihydrochalcone flavonoids against Porphyromonas gingivalis and their mechanisms of antibacterial action through comparative transcriptome profiling. Susceptibility tests showed that two typical dihydrochalcone flavonoids (phloretin and phlorizin) had much lower minimum inhibitory concentrations (12.5 μg mL -1 and 50 μg mL -1 , respectively) than the common flavanone naringenin (100 μg mL -1 ). SEM observations and the LDH activity assay indicated obvious anomalies in cell morphology and increased cell membrane permeability, indicating the destructive effect of those compounds on the cell structure. These compounds might also induce apoptosis in P. gingivalis , as shown by the CLSM fluorescence images. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the flavonoid treatment impacted DNA function and oxidative damage. These flavonoids may activate antioxidant-related pathways that are lethal to anaerobic bacteria like P. gingivalis . Additionally, the compounds resulted in the silencing of transposition-related genes, potentially inhibiting resistance-gene acquisition and expression. Phloretin regulated fatty acid metabolism pathways, which are related to the construction and maintenance of the cell membrane. This suggests a relationship between the structure and antibacterial activities of the tested compounds that share a flavonoid skeleton but differ in the C-ring and glucose moiety. This is the first report of the antibacterial activities and mechanisms of action of food-derived dihydrochalcone flavonoids at the transcriptome level, offering a promising approach for the development of new antibacterial agents from natural products and enhancing their applicability in treating diseases associated with oral pathogens as a substitute for antibiotics.

Food safety and authenticity analysis play a pivotal role in guaranteeing food quality, safeguarding public health, and upholding consumer trust. In recent years, significant social progress has presented fresh challenges in the realm of food analysis, underscoring the imperative requirement to devise innovative and expedient approaches for conducting on-site assessments. Consequently, cellulose paper-based devices (PADs) have come into the spotlight due to their characteristics of microchannels and inherent capillary action. This review summarizes the recent advances in cellulose PADs in various food products, comprising various fabrication strategies, detection methods such as mass spectrometry and multi-mode detection, sampling and processing considerations, as well as applications in screening food safety factors and assessing food authenticity developed in the past 3 years. According to the above studies, cellulose PADs face challenges such as limited sample processing, inadequate multiplexing capabilities, and the requirement for workflow integration, while emerging innovations, comprising the use of simplified sample pretreatment techniques, the integration of advanced nanomaterials, and advanced instruments such as portable mass spectrometer and the innovation of multimodal detection methods, offer potential solutions and are highlighted as promising directions. This review underscores the significant potential of cellulose PADs in facilitating decentralized, cost-effective, and simplified testing methodologies to maintain food safety standards. This study reports the cellulo-xylanolytic cocktail production from Hypocrea lixii GGRK4 using multi-objective genetic algorithm-artificial neural network tool, resulting in 8.32 ± 1.07 IU/mL, 51.53 ± 3.78 IU/mL activity of CMCase and xylanase, respectively with more than 85 % residual activity at 60 °C and pH 6.0. Interestingly, metal ions viz. K + and Ca 2+ stimulated the enzyme activity, whereas Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ reduced the activity. Significant amounts of hydrophobic compounds, chromophores, and phenolics were released after wastepapers deinking. The deinking efficiency of 73.60 ± 2.45 % and 38.60 ± 1.34 % was obtained for photocopier paper and newspaper, respectively, whereas brightness of 89.90 ± 2.10 % ISO and 44.90 ± 1.63 % ISO was reported for both types of waste papers. The physical strength of deinked photocopier paper and newspapers, i.e., tensile index (3.10 and 0.50 %), tearing index (7.10 and 4.83 %), and burst factor (8.61) were enhanced whereas double fold property was decreased proving wastepaper reusability. Butelase-1, the fastest known Asn/Asp-specific peptide ligase capable of catalyzing peptide ligation and cyclization, holds promising application prospects in the fields of food and biology. However, limited research exists on its recombinant expression and potential applications in peptide drugs. In this study, the activity of recombinantly-produced butelase-1 was enhanced by co-expressing it with a molecular chaperone in the SHuffle T7 strain. By introducing single or multiple synonymous rare codons at the beginning of the coding regions of beta-strand or alpha-helix, in combination with ribosomal binding site engineering, the activity of butelase-1 could be further improved. Consequently, the butelase-1 with a specific activity of 386.93 U/mg and a catalytic efficiency of 11,048 M -1  s -1 was successfully prepared in E. coli, resulting in a total activity of 8183.54 U/L and a yield of about 100 mg/L. This optimized butelase-1 was then used to efficiently cyclize the redesigned anti-cancer peptide lunasin, leading to enhanced bioavailability and anti-cancer effects. Traditional packaging materials feed the growing global food protection. However, these packaging materials are not conducive to environment and have not the ability to kill bacteria. Herein, a green and simple strategy is reported for food packaging protection and long-term antibacterial using carboxymethylcellulose-based photothermal film (CMC@CuS NPs/PVA) that consists of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) immobilized copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). With satisfied oxygen transmittance (0.03 cc/m 2 /day) and water vapor transmittance (163.3 g/m 2 /day), the tensile strength, tear strength and burst strength reached to 3401.2 N/m, 845.7 mN and 363.6 kPa, respectively, which could lift 4.5 L of water. The composite film had excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and photothermal stability. Under the irradiation of near infrared (NIR), it can rapidly heated up to 197 °C within 25 s. The antibacterial analysis showed that the inhibition rate of composite film against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) could all reach >99 %. Furthermore, the synthesized CuS NPs was well immobilized and the residual rate of copper kept 98.7 % after 10 days. Noticeably, the composite film can preserve freshness of strawberries for up to 6 days. To find a new way to slow down the release of glufosinate (GA) pesticide and to solve the susceptibility to decomposition by soil microorganisms, a series of novel antibacterial polysaccharide-based sustained release beads (PSRB) were prepared. The PSRB was prepared by immobilization of GA loaded polysaccharide-based chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (PS-HACC) microcapsules in the core and layers of the multilayer sodium alginate beads. The PSRB was characterized by FI-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, and BET to reveal their composition and surface morphology. The optimal conditions of the slow release beads were as follows, the concentration of Ca 2+ , pH, temperature and the coating layer number was 0.1 mol/L, 7, 25 °Cand 3, respectively. The kinetic study showed that the slow release of PSRB was in accordance with the Higuchi kinetic model, and the FI-IR and XRD analyses revealed that the PS-HACC and GA were successfully cross-linked to the PSRB. BET showed that PSRB were greater than PSRB 3 at surface area, pore volume and pore size. Inhibition circles experiments demonstrated that WPSRB 3 has good antibacterial activity. The weed control in soybean with PSRB 3 application is perfect and the weed control cycle is long. Concern about food safety triggers demand on rapid, accurate and on-site detection of foodborne pathogens. Among various fluorescent probes for detection, carbon dots (CDs) prepared by carbonization of carbon-rich raw materials show extraordinary performance for their excellent and tailorable photoluminescence property, as well as their facilely gained specificity by surface customization and modification. CDs-based fluorescent probes play a crucial role in many pathogenic bacteria sensing systems. In addition, microfluidic technology with characteristics of portability and functional integration is expected to combine with CDs-based fluorescent probes for point-of-care testing (POCT), which can further enhance the detection property of CDs-based fluorescent probes. Recently, hydrogel sensors have been widely applied in wearable and portable electronics, but the low mechanical property, intolerance of fatigue, and low sensitivity and adhesion limit their further applications. In this study, sulfonated nanocellulose (SCNF) with dual functionality was blended into polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel matrix to reinforce the mechanical strength and facilitate the homogeneous dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The SCNF-CNT/PAM hydrogel was designed through free radical polymerization to achieve commendable mechanical, electrical, and multifunctional properties. The environmental-friendly SCNF serves as bio-templates to facilitate the assembling of CNT into integrated SCNF-CNT structures with good dispersity, thus enabling the establishment of an integrated conducting and reinforcing network. The fabricated SCNF-CNT/PAM hydrogel exhibited outstanding compressive strength (∼0.45 MPa at 50 % strain), tensile strength (∼169.12 kPa), and antifatigue capacity under cyclic stretching and pressing. Furthermore, the multifunctional sensors assembled using this hydrogel demonstrated high strain sensitivity (gauge factor ~ 3.7 at 100-400 % strain) and effectively detected human motions. Food waste occurs frequently worldwide, though hunger and malnutrition issues have received global attention. Short-term spoilage of perishable foods causes a significant proportion of food waste. Developing simple, green, and low-cost strategies to preserve the freshness of perishable foods is important to address this issue and improving food safety. By using strawberries as the model perishable fruit, this study reported a pectin/carboxy methyl starch sodium (PC) based coating using epigallocatechin gallate-loaded eggshell powder (ES@EGCG) as the functional fillers. In comparison to PC coating, the PC-ES@EGCG coating displayed much-enhanced performance, such as enhanced mechanical (2 folds) and barrier (water vapor & oxygen) properties. This composite coating reduced the weight loss of strawberries from over 60% to around 30% after 7-day storage. Coated strawberries exhibit better freshness retention, which achieves the purpose of preserving strawberries during storage. In this work, shellac and its crosslinking were studied to produce paper straws for the application of liquid products. Commercial paper straws are not durable for liquid foods due to their hygroscopic nature, and thus, they find it challenging to replace single-use plastics. Shellac is a naturally occurring resin utilized as an adhesive and water-resistant coating over the paper straw. Shellac was cured at 125 °C, 150 °C, 175 °C, and 200 °C, and it was crosslinked in about 210 min, 150 min, 60 min, and 30 min respectively and studied for kinetics. The crosslinking of shellac produced a thermally stable material. Compared to commercial paper straws, these paper shellac straws exhibited high bending stiffness (1356.11 Nmm), tensile strength (13,74 MPa), flexural strength (21.72 MPa), and compression strength (24.99 MPa). Moreover, the paper shellac straws didn't bend in wet conditions under load for up to one day, while the commercial paper straw bends in 8 min. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technology has important application value in treating emerging contaminant (ECs), but it still faces challenges in achieving efficient electron transfer and metal valence cycling. In this study, the interfacial electric field characteristics of FeNC catalysts were adjusted by introducing NC defects to affect the electron transfer process, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance of PMS. It is found that in the FeNC structure, the shift of the charge generates an interfacial electric field, which can promote the directional transfer of electrons. Through quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis, it was confirmed that the defect played a decisive role in regulating the interfacial electric field and improving the catalytic reaction efficiency. The interfacial electric field-mediated superexchange interaction realizes the electron donor effect of organic pollutants and the effective electron transfer between the Fe site, accelerates the electron cycling of the Fe site, and realizes the rapid and stable catalysis of PMS. The increase of the occupancy state distribution of d orbitals near the Fermi level provides favorable conditions for electron transitions and catalytic activation of PMS. This study focuses on optimizing the pulping by-product to produce effective hydrogels for controlling the release of salicylic acid (SA). In this regard, two routes are achieved: the first involves preparing black liquor (BL) composite hydrogels with various polymer macromolecules [polyacrylamide (PAM), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and chitosan (Cs), and the second involves carboxymethylation of BL and grafting with acrylamide. Hydrogels are evaluated using spectral analysis (ATR-FTIR), thermal analysis (TGA and DTG), and swelling measures. Encapsulation, release profile, SA release kinetics, as well as ATR-FTIR and SEM measurements, were used to evaluate the behavior of loaded hydrogels. According to the results, grafted carboxymethylated BL-gel had the maximum SA release (98.7 %), followed by PAM-BL (51.7 %) and PAM/PVA-BL (43.1 %). Over a 48-hour period, the hydrogels demonstrated a prolonged SA release pattern. A new Candida parapsilosis ACCC 20221 ( C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221) whole-cell catalyst with a high phenolic glycoside esters synthesis activity and large biomass was obtained after culture with glucose. The possible mechanisms were revealed by using comparative proteomics. It found the expression of proteins involved in post-translational modification, protein turnover, and chaperone, and RNA processing and modification was upregulated, which ensured the metabolic balance and accurate translation, correct folding, and post-translational modification of proteins, thus enhancing the production of lipases in C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221 cultured with glucose. Moreover, the glycolysis pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and fatty acids synthesis were enhanced, while the β-oxidation of fatty acids was weakened in C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221 cells cultured with glucose, which led to an increase in energy generation and cell membrane synthesis; thus, large biomass was obtained. In addition, CCE40476.1 and CAC86400.1, which were likely to exert arbutin esters synthesis activity in C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221, were screened, and it was found that vinyl propionate could easily enter the catalytic pocket of CCE40476.1 and form hydrogen bonding interactions with Leu191 and Ser266.

Corrosion of steel in the marine environment greatly reduces their service life. Polymeric coatings are the most popular anticorrosion technology, but seawater penetration cannot be prohibited because of the distinct stacking structure of the macromolecular chains. In this context, a novel anticorrosive hyperbranched polyurethane-based coating with dopamine (DOPA) at the terminals is prepared herein. The built-in DOPA is able to capture the iron ions released from the corroded substrate and form DOPA-Fe 3+ complexation, which further cooperates with the surrounding seawater and imparts self-passivation, self-delivery and self-healing capabilities to the coating. Under the joint action of these measures, the corrosion of tinplate (serving as the steel model) is reduced to a record-low level (corrosion current = 1 × 10 -9  A cm -2 , corrosion rate = 1 × 10 -5  mm year -1 ). The hybrid composite sample based on Prosopis Juliflora (PJ) bark and ramie fibre with different length, weight percentage, and curing temperature were created for the first time in this work. Totally, 120 hybrid composite samples were tested in this study. There were five different fibre lengths: 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, and 30 mm, weight percentages 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, and 50 %, and different curing temperatures 80 °C, 90 °C, 100 °C, 110 °C, and 120 °C used to produce the hybrid composite samples. Due to the cross-linking ability with the epoxy matrix, the hybrid composite specimen shows high resistance up to 98 Shore D hardness. The high polarity of the epoxy matrix and the hydrogen bond strengthening effect, increased the composite sample flexural strength by 12 %. The curing temperature of 100 °C, 20 mm fibre length, and 30 % of the hybrid composite sample achieved the highest tensile strength (28.76 MPa), flexural strength (46.54 MPa), impact strength (4.5 J), and hardness strength properties (98 shore D). This study developed active packaging films of Polylactic acid incorporated with the plant-based essential oils of Trachyspermum ammi, T. ammi and Vanilla to package waffles, where the antimicrobial property was provided by T. ammi and its odor was masked by vanilla essential oil. Compared to conventional solvent-cast films of smaller sizes requiring a huge amount of solvents, bigger-size PLA-oil films with lower solvent demand were prepared by tape casting technique with 10, 30, and 50 wt% essential oil blends. Films were studied for their morphological, chemical, mechanical, barrier, and antimicrobial properties. The presence and time-bound release of volatile oils from the films was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, with a continuous decrease of oils from the films till day 30. The plasticizing effect of oils in films was evidenced by decreased tensile strength and crystallinity. In contrast, an increase in elongation at break and water vapor permeability of oil films were also measured. As biomass, rice straw (RS) is often valorized as a precursor of green products. In this respect, the RS-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are synthesized doped with N and S during the preparation. Synergistic doping with lipoic acid and ethylenediamine can vastly increase the yield of CQD from rice straw from 6.14 % to 62.8 %, and sulfur doping plays a more important role on the surface functional groups of the quantum dots. Further assessment is achieved toward the performance of SN-CQDs-hydroxypropyl cellulose nanocomposites. The optical behavior of synthesized SN-CQDs, and the critical concentration of its liquid crystal behaviors, at which the anisotropic phase begins to emerge, is approximately 1 %. Incorporating it into HPC, especially at 5 %, provided nanocomposite films with effective liquid crystal, tensile strength, and thermal stability. This sample's texture reveals a planar structure with colors ranging from yellow to red. The synergistic effect of incorporating SN-CQDs is shown by improving the strength to ~282.1 %, and the activation energy increased from 583.6 kJ.mol -1 to 615.1 kJ/mol. Paper relics, as carrieres of historical civilization's records and inheritance, could be severely acidic and brittle over time. In this study, the multi-functional dispersion of nanometer magnesium oxide (MgO) carried by 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane-modified bacterial cellulose (KH550-BC) was applied in the impregnation process to repair aged paper, aiming at solving the key problems of anti-acid and strength recovery in the protection of ancient books. The KH550-BC/MgO treatment demonstrated enhanced functional efficacy in repairing aged paper, attributed to the homogeneous and stable distribution of MgO within the nanofibers of BC networks, with minimal impact on the paper's wettability and color. Furthermore, the treatment facilitated the formation of adequate alkali reserves and hydrogen bonding, resulting in superior anti-aging properties in the treated paper during prolonged preservation. Even after 30 days of hygrothermal aging tests, the paper repaired by KH550-BC/MgO was still in a gently alkaline environment (pH was about 7.56), alongside a 32.18% elevation compared to the untreated paper regarding the tear index. The results of this work indicate that KH550-BC/MgO is an effective reinforcement material for improving the long-term restoration of ancient books.

The major objective of this research revolves around the integration of polypyrrole (PPy) and various concentrations of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) into a polyacrylamide (PAm)-grafted hydroxyethyl cellulose (gHEC) to produce gHEC@PPy@N-CQDs bionanocomposites that possess environmentally sustainable properties. The intercalation and uniform distribution of N-CQDs inside the gHEC@PPy matrix have been demonstrated through the analysis of data obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The samples underwent analysis using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA and DTG) as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The improved dispersion of PPy and 4 % N-CQDs inside the matrix led to enhanced electrical characteristics of the graphene-hybridized metal bionanocomposite. The peculiar optical and photoluminescence emission observed in the gHEC@PPy@N-CQDs bionanocomposites can be attributed to the surface groups of N-CQDs and the transition between CN and CN. This hypothesis suggests that these factors play a significant role in determining the observed optical properties. In this paper, N-vinylpyrrolidone was copolymerized with acrylic acid and itaconic acid by free radical polymerization, and a series of polyacrylic acid-co-itaconic acid-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone (PAIN) dispersants with different pyrrolidone ligand contents were synthesized and characterized. Then, the cobalt blue nano-pigment slurry (20 wt%) was prepared through a water-based grinding method, and the optimum grinding technology was explored and determined as follows: PAIN2 as a dispersant, a dispersant dosage of 10 wt%, and a grinding time of 480 min. According to this optimum grinding technology, the prepared pigment slurry had a significantly decreased agglomeration, the D 90 of which was 82 nm, and separately increased to 130 nm and 150 nm after heat storage for 3 and 7 days, exhibiting excellent heat storage stability. Additionally, its TSI value was also the lowest (1.9%), indicating good dispersion stability. The QCM and adorption capacity measuring results showed PAIN2 had a larger adsorption capacity, and the formed adsorption layer had a higher rigidity and was not easy to fall off. This was caused by both the interaction of carboxyl groups and the pyrrolidone ligand (strong coordination interaction) in PAIN2 with cobalt blue. The XPS and FT-IR measurements further proved the above-mentioned adsorption mechanism.

Three nanoparticles were fabricated for the co-delivery of quercetin and resveratrol. Nanoparticles consisted of a zein and carboxymethyl cellulose assembled using antisolvent precipitation/layer-by-layer deposition method. Nanoparticles contained quercetin in the core and resveratrol in the shell, resveratrol in the core and quercetin in the shell or both quercetin and resveratrol in the core. The particle sizes of nanoparticles were 280.4, 214.8, and 181.8 nm, respectively. Zeta-potential was about -50 mV and PDI was about 0.3. The different positions of polyphenol distribution nanoparticles could reduce the competition between the two polyphenols, the encapsulation rate, loading rate and storage stability reached up to 91.7 %, 5.37 % and 97.1 %, respectively. FT-IR showed that hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions were the main driving forces of nanoparticle assembly. XRD showed that two polyphenols were successfully encapsulated in nanoparticles. TGA showed that distributing the nanoparticles in different layers would enhance thermal stability. TEM and SEM showed that polysaccharides attached to the surface of nanoparticles formed a core-shell structure with uniform particle size. All three nanoparticles could release two polyphenols slowly in simulated gastrointestinal digestion, Korsmeyer-Peppas was the most suitable kinetic release model. It is an interesting research topic to study the interfacial interactions between hemicellulose and cellulose, specifically how hemicellulose's structure affects its binding to cellulose nanofibers. Our research proposes that dispersion interaction play an important role in this interfacial interaction, more so than electrostatic forces when considering the adherence of cellulose to xylan. To quantify these interactions, the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) colloidal probe technique is applied to measure the intermolecular forces between cellulose nanofibers, which are attached to the probe and xylan. These measured forces are then analyzed in relation to the length, diameter and functional groups of the nanocellulose, as well as the molecular weight and side chains of the xylan. Moreover, the predominance of dispersion forces by contrasting the adhesive forces before and after the grafting of a large nonpolar group onto xylan. This modification significantly reduces contact between the cellulose and xylan backbone, thereby markedly diminishing the dispersion interactions. Parallel to the AFM experiments, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations corroborate the experimental results and support our hypotheses. The escalating interest in bacterial cellulose (BC) confronts a substantial obstacle due to its biologically inert properties. Hence, BC was modified with ethanolic mango peel extract (EEMP) for various industrial and medical applications of the novel nanocomposite (BC/EEMP). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) delineated the phenolic composition of EEMP, revealing a repertoire of polyphenolic compounds, notably chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, catechin, and ellagic acid. EEMP exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus, with MIC of 0.018 mg/mL and 0.009 mg/mL, respectively. The removal mechanism of Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ by BC/EEMP nanocomposite membrane via SEM, EDX, FT-IR, and XRD was characterized, indicating deposition and aggregation of heavy metals with diminished porosity. Heavy metal removal optimization using the Box-Behnken design achieved maximal removal of 95.5 % and 90 % for Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ , respectively. Moreover, BC/EEMP nanocomposite demonstrated selective dose-dependent anticancer activity toward hepatoma (HepG-2, IC 50 of 208.8 μg/mL), skin carcinoma (A431, IC 50 of 216.7 μg/mL), and breast carcinoma (MDA, IC 50 of 197.5 μg/mL), attributed to the enhanced availability of biologically active polyphenolic compounds and physical characteristics of BC. This study focuses on changes in the physiochemical properties of chitosan film when incorporated with a blend of essential oils of Tulsi and Ajwain. The essential oil blend-loaded films showed a decrement in transparency. Tulsi essential oil decreased the moisture content, swelling capacity, and water solubility. However, adding Ajwain along with Tulsi essential oil led to a significant increase in these properties. Meanwhile, the water vapor transmission rate didn't change significantly due to non-polar constituents in Tulsi essential oil, except when only Ajwain essential oil was present. The mechanical properties showed that the tensile strength of films increased with the addition of Tulsi essential oil (14.95 MPa to 31.27 MPa) but decreased further with increasing Ajwain oil concentration in films (32.13 MPa to 15.89 MPa). On the other hand, an increment in percent elongation at break (8.26 % to 24.02 %) was observed due to the excellent plasticization effect of Ajwain essential oil. Antioxidant activity was observed for the Tulsi essential oil-containing films and increased significantly with adding Ajwain essential oil. Finally, walnuts were packed in the active film. Background : Employing citric acid/dimethyl formamide (CA/DMF), two distinct types of carbon quantum dots (CQDs), tree-shaped/fingerprinted (TF-CQDs) and fullerene-like (F) were synthesized from both cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Methods : Fluorescence microscopy revealed different emission colors: blue for TF-CQDs and green for F, highlighting the structural influence on light properties. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the intricate fingerprinted and tree-like morphology of TF-CQDs and the spherical nature of F derived from CMC. The adsorption behavior and kinetics of Cr(vi) removal from water by TF-CQDs and F were evaluated. Significant findings : Both samples demonstrated rapid Cr(vi) uptake; TF-CQDs reached equilibrium within 120 minutes compared to 240 minutes for F. Subsequent leaching led to decreased adsorption after these initial periods. Kinetic analysis revealed a first-order model for TF-CQDs, implying physical adsorption dominance. Cellulose microspheres (CMS) are a type of spherical regenerated cellulose particles with versatile properties which have been used as carrier materials in medical and technical applications. The integration of CMS into paper products opens up novel application scenarios for paper products in a wide range of fields. However, the incorporation of CMS carriers into paper products is challenging and hitherto no reports do exist in literature. Here, we present a feasibility study to incorporate up to 50 w.% CMS in paper hand sheets using retention aids. Our primary observations highlight the successful formation of uniform paper hand sheets retaining its tensile strengths at elevated CMS concentrations. Sheets with high CMS contents exhibit an increase in density and display enhanced surface smoothness - an outcome of a CMS layer forming atop the fiber base - which effectively bridges voids and rectifies surface irregularities as supported by Gurley testing, infinite focus microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalysis has emerged as a clean method for cleaving lignin-linked bonds due to its mild and sunlight-driven reaction conditions. The fast electron-hole pair complex of g-C 3 N 4 constrains its degradation efficiency, making the heterojunction construction a popular solution. The conventional methods of preparing g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions by physical mixing destroy π-conjugations in g-C 3 N 4 , reducing the adsorption of lignin containing benzene rings. In this study, a novel indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) quantum dot-g-C 3 N 4 0D/2D heterojunction was prepared through the high-temperature oxidation of pre-prepared indium-doped g-C 3 N 4 . The introduction of In 2 O 3 at the quantum dot level minimizes the interference with lignin adsorption capacity. The strong combination of the two (In 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 ) increases the intersection interface area, promoting the S-scheme transfer route of the photogenerated electrons. Consequently, this enhances the photoelectric conversion efficiency and carrier lifetime of the heterojunction, and inhibits the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in g-C 3 N 4 . The proposed heterojunction was 3 times more efficient than g-C 3 N 4 alone for selective cleavage of lignin β-O-4 bonds after 2 h of sunlight irradiation. This study reports a novel, eco-friendly; fast and cost-effective microwave method for synthesizing carboxymethylated graphene oxide (CMGO) from sugarcane residues. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed successful CMGO synthesis through the presence of characteristic peaks at 1567.93 and 1639.29 cm -1 (COONa vibrations) and increased CH 2 intensity compared to unmodified graphene oxide (GO). Furthermore, CMGO derived from sugarcane residues demonstrated potential in mitigating the side effects of toxic materials like carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ). Treatment with CMGO partially reduced elevated levels of liver enzymes (ALT and AST) and nitrogenous waste products (urea and uric acid) in CCl 4 -induced liver damage models, suggesting an improvement in liver function despite ongoing cellular damage.This work paves the way for a sustainable and economical approach to produce functionalized graphene oxide with promising biomedical applications in alleviating toxin-induced liver injury., (© 2024. Circular bacteriocins are known for their structural stability and effective antimicrobial properties, positioning them as potential natural food preservatives. However, their widespread application is impeded by restricted availability. This research developed a total biosynthesis platform for circular bacteriocins, with a focus on AS-48 by involving recombinant production of the linear precursor in Escherichia coli , followed by enzymatic cyclization of the precursor into cyclic AS-48 using the ligase butelase-1 in vitro . An important discovery is that, aside from fusion tags, the C-terminal motif LE and LEKKK also could affect the expression yield of the precursor. This biosynthesis platform is both versatile and high-yielding, achieving yields of 10-20 mg/L of AS-48. Importantly, the biosynthetic AS-48 exhibited a secondary structure and antimicrobial activities comparable to those of the native molecules. As such, this work proposes an effective synthetic approach for circular bacteriocins, facilitating their advancement and application in the food industry.

This study aimed to investigate the biodegradation behaviour of starch/nanocellulose/black tea extract (SNBTE) films in a 30-day soil burial test. The SNBTE films were prepared by mixing commercial starch, nanocellulose (2, 4, and 6%), and an aqueous solution of black tea extract by a simple mixing and casting process. The chemical and morphological properties of the SNBTE films before and after biodegradation were characterized using the following analytical techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The changes in soil composition, namely pH, electrical conductivity (EC), moisture content, water holding capacity (WHC), soil respiration, total nitrogen, weight mean diameter (MDW), and geometric mean diameter (GMD), as a result of the biodegradation process, were also estimated. The results showed that the films exhibited considerable biodegradability (35-67%) within 30 days while increasing soil nutrients. The addition of black tea extract reduced the biodegradation rate due to its polyphenol content, which likely resulted in a reduction in microbial activity. The addition of nanocellulose (2-6% weight of starch) increased the tensile strength, but decreased the elongation at break of the films. These results suggest that starch nanocellulose and SNBTE films are not only biodegradable under soil conditions but also positively contribute to soil health, highlighting their potential as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic films in the packaging industry., (© 2024. Chronic wounds (CWs) treatment still represents a demanding medical challenge. Several intrinsic physiological signals (i.e., pH) help to stimulate and support wound healing. CWs, in fact, are characterized by a predominantly alkaline pH of the exudate, which acidifies as the wound heals. Therefore, pH-responsive wound dressings hold great potential owing to their capability of tuning their functions according to the wound conditions. Herein, porous chitosan (CS)-based scaffolds loaded with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and graphene oxide (GO) were successfully fabricated using a freeze-drying method. CNCs were extracted from bagasse pulps fibers through acid hydrolysis. GO was synthesised by Hummer's method. The scaffolds were then ionically cross-linked using the amino acid L-Arginine (Arg), as a bioactive agent, and tested as potential pH-responsive wound dressing. Notably, the effect of CNCs and GO singly and simultaneously loaded within the CS-Arg scaffolds was investigated. The modulation of CNCs and GO content within CS-Arg scaffolds facilitated the development of scaffolds with an optimal pH-dependent swelling ratio capability and extended degradation time. Tin phosphide has gained extensive attention as a prospective anode for lithium/potassium ion batteries because of its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the fast capacity fading, which is induced by the huge volume expansion and poor electrical conductivity during cycling, severely restricts its practical applications. In this work, a SnP 3 -CNTs/KB composite with a SnP 3 content as high as 90 wt% was successfully synthesized by a two-step ball milling method. SnP 3 nanoparticles were tightly encapsulated in multi-geometric composite carbon layers to efficiently relieve the volume changes and enhance conductivity. Specifically, the resulting SnP 3 -CNTs/KB anode showed a specific capacity up to 998.6 mA h g -1 after 100 cycles at 50 mA g -1 and 810.4 mA h g -1 after 500 cycles at 1000 mA g -1 for lithium ion batteries. For potassium ion batteries, a high reversible capacity of 200.2 mA h g -1 was achieved after 200 cycles at 1000 mA g -1 . This work affords a new insight for exploring excellent support structures of tin phosphide-based anodes.

The previous research addressed the waste problem of agriculture and forestry residues by exploring the efficient utilization of liquefied soybean straw in supercapacitor. The structures of the liquefied soybean straw were controlled by coupling microwave hydrothermal treatment with carbonization under the influence of a C3N4 bifunctional template. What's more, C3N4 could effectively regulate the pore structures and provide an effective N active site of carbon materials C3N4. The obtained N-SLR Carbon-700 possess a specific surface area of up to 1593.7 m2 g-1, and the pore size is mainly concentrated in the range of 1.8-2.5 nm, providing efficient ions transmission channels and storage space. Its specific capacitance is up to 261.5F g-1 (current density of 0.5A g-1), and the capacity retention is 74.04% when the current density is expanded by 20 times. In the two-electrode system, the energy density of N-SLR Carbon-700 could reach to 31.3 W h kg-1 at a power density of 360 W kg-1, as well as the energy surface density is maintained at 69% when the power density is increased by a factor of 20. Starch-based pH-sensing films with bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) and red cabbage anthocyanins (RCA) as active components were investigated in this research. Their structural, physical, surface and colorimetric properties were analyzed, mainly as a function of BNC concentration. The aim of the research was to relate the changes in the intermolecular interactions between the components of the films (starch, anthocyanins and BNC) to the physical, surface and colorimetric properties that are important for the primary intended application of the produced films as pH indicators in smart packaging. The results showed that maize starch (MS) was more suitable as a matrix for the stabilization of anthocyanins compared to potato starch (PS). PS-based films showed a lower value of water contact angle than MS-based films, indicating stronger hydrophilicity. The swelling behavior results indicate that the concentrations of BNC in MS-based films (cca 10%) and the concentration of about 50% BNC in PS-based films are required if satisfactory properties of the indicator in terms of stability in a wet environment are to be achieved. The surface free energy results of PS-based films with BNC were between 62 and 68 mJ/m 2 and with BNC and RCA between 64 and 68 mJ/m 2 ; for MS-based films, the value was about 65 mJ/m 2 for all samples with BNC and about 68 mJ/m 2 for all samples with BNC and RCA. The visual color changes after immersion in different buffer solutions (pH 2.0-10.5) showed a gradual transition from red/pink to purple, blue and green for the observed samples. Films immersed in different buffers showed lower values of 2 to 10 lightness points (CIE L*) for PS-based films and 10 to 30 lightness points for MS-based films after the addition of BNC. The results of this research can make an important contribution to defining the influence of intermolecular interactions and structural changes on the physical, surface and colorimetric properties of bio-based pH indicators used in smart packaging applications.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a major indoor pollutant that is extremely harmful to human health even at ppb-level. Meanwhile, ppb-level HCHO is also a potential disease marker in the exhalation of patients with respiratory diseases. Higher humidity resistance and lower practical limit of detection (pLOD) both have to be pursued for practical HCHO sensors. In this work, by assembling indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) and fluorinated dipole modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO), we prepared a high-performance room temperature HCHO sensor (In 2 O 3 @ATQ-rGO). Excellent sensing properties toward HCHO under visible illumination have been achieved, including ultra-low pLOD of 3 ppb and high humidity-resistance. By control experiments and density functional theory calculation, it is indicated that the introduced fluorinated dipoles act as not only an "umbrella" to improve the humidity resistance of the composite, but also a "bridge" to accelerate the electron transport, improving the sensitivity of the material. The significant practicality and reliability of the obtained sensors were verified by in-situ simulation experiments using a 3 m 3 test chamber with a humidity control system and by detection of the simulated lung disease patient's exhalation. Given the escalating environmental and safety concerns, friendly protective materials with exceptional mechanical properties, biodegradability, and insensitivity to high temperature have received more and more attention. Here, we report a robust cellulosic gel through the multi-scale integration of cellulose molecular skeleton, nano-reinforced diatomite, and in situ polymerized polyacrylamide molecule. The bottom-up yet cross-scale approach facilitates the formation of cellulosic gel characterized by a highly interconnected hydrogen bond network and nano-enhanced domain, resulting in a tensile strength of up to 13.83 MPa, a Young's modulus exceeding 280 MPa, and an impact strength around 12.38 KJ m -1 . Furthermore, this gel exhibits structural stability at temperatures up to 130 °C, good flame retardancy, and complete biodegradability within a span of 35 days. The robust cellulosic gel, acting as a pliable protector, demonstrates exceptional protection for human joints. The development of greener and more sustainable synthesis processes for manufacturing commodity chemicals is of great importance. The majority of current phenol production methods involve harsh reaction conditions with high energy consumption, causing severe environmental pollution. In this study, we present a novel approach for the decarboxylation of hydroxybenzoic acids (HBAs) to phenol using a choline chloride-urea (ChCl-urea) deep eutectic solvent (DES). Our study reveals the remarkable dual performance of ChCl-urea both as a catalyst and solvent for the decarboxylation of HBA, resulting in a high phenol yield (94 mol%) under mild reaction conditions. The proposed reaction pathway, established through a combination of experiments and computational simulations, enhances our understanding of this process. The recyclability of the DES system during decarboxylation was also assessed. Our findings demonstrate that the integration of DES into conventional chemical processes can pave the way for sustainable manufacturing, exemplifying a novel approach for producing phenol from abundant natural resources using designer solvents., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

This work deals with the fabrication of lignin containing cellulose nanofiber (LCNF)/Ag 2 Se films for thermoelectric applications. Ag 2 Se nanoparticles were synthesized within the LCNF network through in situ methods, employing Na 2 SeO 3 and AgNO 3 along with microwave energy treatment. LCNF/Ag 2 Se films fabricated with two LCNF : Ag 2 Se weight percent ratios ( i.e. , 50 : 50 and 30 : 70) were used to construct a flexible thermoelectric module. The obtained Ag 2 Se nanoparticles displayed a uniform size distribution in the LCNF network with smaller dimensions from the microwave energy treated group. The microstructure of LCNF/Ag 2 Se films was improved by hot-pressing, leading to enhanced film density thermoelectric properties. At a differential temperature of 50 K, films with 50% and 70% of Ag 2 Se exhibited output voltages of 18 and 21 mV; and Seebeck coefficients of -60 and -70 μV K -1 at 350 K, respectively. When microwave energy was applied, the films at 50% and 70% Ag 2 Se showed highest output voltages of 19 and 33 mV, respectively, and Seebeck coefficients of -63.3 and -110 μV K -1 at 350 K. Binary systems of citrus peel pectin (a major food carbohydrate) and mucin (a principal oral-gastrointestinal glycoprotein) are studied, as to understand the interactions and thermodynamics between food and biofluids during oral processing and digestion. The fluorimetry emission spectra of mucin were quenched by pectin addition at 293, 301, 310 and 318 K, indicating direct contact between the two macromolecular populations. A red shift, suggesting pectin-induced alterations on mucin conformation, has been observed at 318 K. Intensity-based Stern - Volmer plots fitted second-order polynomial equations, suggesting the coexistence of both static and dynamic quenching, while the increase of the slopes with temperature points to the predominance of dynamic phenomena. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements also point to dynamic quenching related to transient interactions, rather than to specific bonding. Thermodynamic analysis yields negative free energy changes in all cases, with positive changes for enthalpy and large positive values for TΔS. These are in agreement with the Stern - Volmer analysis, suggesting the predominance of transient, dynamic (here entropic) interactions.
