In alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), hepatic reductions in vitamin A and perturbations in vitamin A metabolism are common. However, the roles that the vitamin A receptors, termed retinoic acid receptors (RARs), may have in preventing the pathophysiology of ALD remains unclear. Our prior data indicate that a RARβ agonist limits the pathology of alcohol-related liver disease. Thus, we generated liver-specific AlbCre-RARβ knockout (BKO) mice and compared them to wild type (WT) mice in an early ALD model. Both strains showed similar blood ethanol concentrations and ETOH-metabolizing enzymes. However, the livers of pair-fed-BKO and ETOH-BKO mice developed higher levels of steatosis and triglycerides than pair-fed-WT and ETOH-WT mice. The increased hepatic steatosis observed in the pair-fed-BKO and ETOH-BKO mice was associated with higher lipid synthesis/trafficking transcripts and lower beta-oxidation transcripts. ETOH-BKO mice also exhibited a higher integrated stress response (ISR) signature, including higher transcript and protein levels of ATF4 and its target, 4-EBP1. In human hepatocytes (HepG2) that lack RARβ (RARβ-KO), ETOH treatments resulted in greater reactive oxygen species compared to their parental cells. Notably, even without ETOH, ATF4 and 4-EBP1 protein levels were higher in the RARβ-KO cells than in their parental cells. These 4-EBP1 increases were greatly attenuated in cultured ATF4-deficient and RARβ/ATF4-deficient HepG2, suggesting that RARβ is a crucial negative regulator of 4-EBP1 through ATF4 in cultured hepatocytes. Here, we identify RARβ as a negative regulator of lipid metabolism and cellular stress in ALD.

In this study, a newly synthesized sepiolite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) adsorbent was tested for the efficient removal of As(III) and As(V) in aqueous solution. Compared with ZVI nanoparticles, the As(III) and As(V) adsorption abilities of S-nZVI were substantially enhanced to 165.86 mg/g and 95.76 mg/g, respectively, owing to the good dispersion of nZVI on sepiolite. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics were well fitted with the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms were fitted with the Freundlich model, denoting a multilayer chemical adsorption process. The increase in the initial solution pH of the solution inhibited As(III) and As(V) adsorption, but a weaker influence on As(III) than As(V) adsorption was observed with increasing pH. Additionally, the presence of SO 4 2- and NO 3 - ions had no pronounced effect on As(III) and As(V) removal, while PO 4 3- and humic acid (HA) significantly restrained the As(III) and As(V) adsorption ability, and Mg 2+ /Ca 2+ promoted the As(V) adsorption efficiency. Spectral analysis showed that As(III) and As(V) formed inner-sphere complexes on S-nZVI. As(III) oxidation and As(V) reduction occurred with the adsorption process on S-nZVI. Overall, the study demonstrated a potential adsorbent, S-nZVI, for the efficient removal of As(III) and As(V) from contaminated water.

A rotating body consisting of a rotating shaft and bearings inevitably generates voltage and current. The potential difference between the bearing and the shaft is the main cause of electrical corrosion, which causes motor failure, shortened bearing life, and many safety issues. To prevent corrosion, passive shaft-grounding devices use conductive materials and brushes; however, these devices cannot be completely grounded, so there is a difference in local potential, and brush friction generates a shaft current. The cumulative effect causes electrical corrosion; therefore, in this study, an electrical corrosion protection device for the rotating power supply shaft was developed. It detected current and potential difference and established a feedback system on the rotating shaft. It also energized the rotating shaft using an external power supply to eliminate the potential difference on the shaft and reduce electrical corrosion. The result was prolonged motor life and improved stability, operating efficiency, and operability of related equipment. In this study, a rotating-shaft test rig was set up, and a constant current was applied to simulate the potential difference and verify the performance of the anti-corrosion device. Gradually, the design scheme was optimized; the potential difference on the rotating shaft was accurately quantified; and the goal of controlling the potential difference within 2 mV was achieved. Finally, the electrical corrosion protection device was applied to the rotating shaft of a merchant ship, and the current and potential difference on the rotating shaft were monitored for 30 days. The results showed that the device had excellent performance in reducing the potential difference on the rotating shaft and preventing electrical corrosion.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has provided a distinct opportunity to explore the mechanisms by which human activities affect air quality and pollution emissions. We conduct a quasi-difference-in-differences (DID) analysis of the impacts of lockdown measures on air pollution during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Our study covers 367 cities from the beginning of the lockdown on 23 January 2020 until April 22, two weeks after the lockdown in the epicenter was lifted. Static and dynamic analysis of the average treatment effects on the treated is conducted for the air quality index (AQI) and six criteria pollutants. The results indicate that, first, on average, the AQI decreased by about 7%. However, it was still over the threshold set by the World Health Organization. Second, we detect heterogeneous changes in the level of different pollutants, which suggests heterogeneous impacts of the lockdown on human activities: carbon monoxide (CO) had the biggest drop, about 30%, and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) had the second-biggest drop, 20%. In contrast, ozone (O 3 ) increased by 3.74% due to the changes in the NO x /VOCs caused by the decrease in NO x , the decrease of O 3 titration, and particulate matter concentration. Third, air pollution levels rebounded immediately after the number of infections dropped, which indicates a swift recovery of human activities. This study provides insights into the implementation of environmental policies in China and other developing countries.
