Introduction: HIV/AIDS is a disease that continues to be a threat to public health., Objective: Estimate the burden of disease generated by HIV/AIDS in the departments of Colombia, 2018 - 2022., Methodology: Disease burden study, based on the metrics of global health estimates from the World Health Organization. State morbidity and mortality databases were used., Results: The departments of Colombia lost 1051,599 (II 95% 849,217.41-1,253,980) DALYs due to HIV/AIDS. When classifying the departments by DALYs rates per 100,000 inhabitants, the differences in the burden in the departments become visible, departments, with rates in the study period, ranging from 4029.8 (3274.4-4785.2) DALYs, in the case of the department of Quindío and 297.2 (103.9-490.5) DALYs in the department of Vichada, men lost on average 23,833.48 (II 95% 13813-35809), while women lost 8,033 (II95% 5214-11177), 75% of DALYs in men occur between 20 and 49 years, in women 71.4% in the same age group., Conclusions: There are differences in the loss of years of healthy life between the departments of Colombia, and annual variations in each department., (Copyright © 2024 Sociedad Española de Médicos de Atención Primaria (SEMERGEN). Objective: To quantify the loss of life due to suicide in Spain compared to other causes of death and to typify the differences by sex and method chosen to caused death., Methods: Observational study with retrospective mortality data analysing the 2,175,334 death records in Spain in the period 2016-2020 provided by the National Institute of Statistics. Potential years of life lost, average potential years of life lost, the ratio of potential years of life lost and life expectancy due to suicide were calculated according to sex and the lethal method used. These indicators were compared with the other causes of death., Results: The average number of potential years of life lost due to suicide was 28 years, second only to childhood and pregnancy-related diseases. Life expectancy ranged from 46.7 to 68 years, finding that the main differences in relation to sex were linked to the method of suicide used, with ratios of potential years of life lost ranging from 0.9 (alcohol poisoning) to 27 (shooting with a short weapon)., Conclusions: In the study period in Spain, suicide is the leading cause of preventable premature mortality. Preventive strategies should necessarily include the analysis of possible methods available to people at risk of self-harm according to gender., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Objective: To determine the healthy life years (HLY) lost as a result of mental disorders and nervous system diseases in Medellin from 2006 to 2012., Methods: Descriptive study using a secondary information source according to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) framework. To calculate the years of potential life lost (YPLL), we used vital statistics data; to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALY), we used morbidity data from individual records managed by health service providers, outpatient clinics and other research studies. HLY are the sum of YPLL and DALY., Results: In Medellin, from 2006 to 2012, out of 1,242,407 HLY related to mental disorders and nervous system diseases, the vast majority (99.39%) were due to disability. Most HLY were found in females (70.22%) and 81% were found in people aged 15 to 59. The disorders representing the greatest burden were unipolar depressive disorder (81%), Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia (4.82%), schizophrenia (3.5%) and drug use disorders (2.78%)., Conclusions: Our results indicate a significant increase in the disease burden due to mental disorders and nervous system diseases. Public policy decision-makers in the city of Medellin should take note, as health problems of this type can result in a substantial rise in healthcare costs., (Copyright © 2018 Asociación Colombiana de Psiquiatría. Introducción: En México, el cáncer de ovario representa 5.3 % de los diagnósticos de cáncer en todos los grupos de edad y 21 % de los cánceres ginecológicos; en las últimas tres décadas ha tenido un aumento constante., Objetivo: Determinar la tendencia de la mortalidad por cáncer de ovario y los años potenciales de vida perdidos (APVP) por estado y región socioeconómica de México entre 2000 y 2014., Método: Se obtuvieron los registros de cáncer de ovario del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía. Se identificaron los códigos de la CIE-10 correspondientes a la causa básica de defunción por cáncer de ovario. Se calcularon las tasas de mortalidad y las tasas de APVP a nivel nacional, por estado y región socioeconómica., Resultados: Entre 2000 y 2014, las tasas ajustadas por edad por 100 000 mujeres se incrementaron de 3.3 a 4.1. Las mayores tasas de mortalidad se identificaron en la región 7, en Chihuahua, Baja California Sur, Colima, Quintana Roo, Zacatecas, Sonora, Coahuila, Aguascalientes, Querétaro. La mayor tasa de APVP por cáncer de ovario se registró en las regiones 7, 5 y 6, en Nayarit, Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, Colima, Tlaxcala, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Coahuila, Aguascalientes y Querétaro., Conclusiones: La región socioeconómica 7 de México presentó las mayores tasas de APVP y de mortalidad por cáncer de ovario., Introduction: In Mexico, ovarian cancer accounting for 5.3% of cancer diagnoses in all age groups and 21% of gynecological cancers and it has had a steady increase in the last three decades., Objective: To determine mortality trends from ovarian cancer and potential years of life lost (PYLL) by state and socioeconomic region of Mexico between 2000 and 2014., Method: Records of ovarian cancer were obtained from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography. ICD-10 codes corresponding to ovarian cancer as the basic cause of death were identified. Mortality rates and YPLL rates were calculated by nationwide, states and socioeconomic region., Results: Between 2000 and 2014, age-adjusted rates per 100,000 women increased from 3.3 to 4.1. The highest mortality rates were identified in region 7, in Chihuahua, Baja California Sur, Colima, Quintana Roo, Zacatecas, Sonora, Coahuila, Aguascalientes and Queretaro. Background: In 2013 in Mexico, gastric cancer (GC) was the third leading cause of death from cancer in individuals 20 years of age or older. GC remains a public health problem in Mexico due to its high mortality and low survival rates, and the significantly lower quality of life of patients with this condition., Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine mortality trends nationwide, by state and socioeconomic region, and to determine rates of age-adjusted years of potential life lost due to GC, by state and socioeconomic region, within the period of 2000-2012., Methods: Mortality records associated with GC for 2000-2012 were obtained from the National Health Information System of the Mexican Department of Health. Codes from the Tenth Revision of the International Classification of Diseases corresponding to the basic cause of death from GC were identified. Mortality and age-adjusted years of potential life lost rates, by state and socioeconomic region, were also calculated., Results: In Mexico, 69,107 individuals died from GC within the time frame of 2000-2012. The age-adjusted mortality rate per 100,000 inhabitants decreased from 7.5 to 5.6. The male:female ratio was 1.15:1.0. Chiapas had the highest death rate from GC (9.2, 95% CI 8.2-10.3 [2000] and 8.2, 95% CI 7.3-9 [2012]), as well as regions 1, 2, and 5. Chiapas and socioeconomic region 1 had the highest rate of years of potential life lost., Conclusions: Using the world population age distribution as the standard, the age-adjusted mortality rate in Mexico per 100,000 inhabitants that died from GC decreased from 7.5 to 5.6 between 2000 and 2012. Chiapas and socioeconomic regions 1, 2, and 5 had the highest mortality from GC (Chiapas: 9.2, 95% CI 8.2-10.3 [2000] and 8.2, 95% CI 7.3-9 [2012], region 1: 5.5, 95% CI 5.2-5.9 [2000] and 5.3, 95% CI 4.9-5.7 [2012]; region 2: 5.3, 95% CI 5-5.6 [2000] and 5.4, 95% CI 5.1-5.8 [2012]; region 5: 6.1, 95% CI 5.6-6.6 [2000] and 4.6, 95% CI 4.2-5 [2012]). Background and Objective: Smoking is an important public health problem, and is one of the main avoidable causes of morbidity and early mortality. The aim was to estimate the mortality attributable to smoking and its impact on premature mortality in Spain in the year 2012., Patients and Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study, carried out on the Spanish population aged ≥ 18 years in 2012. The prevalence of smoking by age and sex was obtained from the National Health Survey 2011-2012, and the number of deaths by age, sex and cause was obtained from the vital statistics of the National Institute of Statistics. The proportion of deaths attributable to smoking was calculated according to sex and age group, from the etiological fraction of the population. Likewise, loss of potential years of life lost (PYLL) and the mean potential years of life lost (MPYLL) were also calculated., Results: In 2012, smoking caused 60,456 deaths which accounted for 15.23% of all deaths. Trachea-bronchial-lung cancer in men and other cardiopathies in women mostly contributed to this mortality. The PYLL were 184,426, and the MPYLL were 3.25 years in men and 2.42 years in women., Conclusions: In 2012, every day, 125 men and 40 women die from smoking-related conditions. The smoking prevalence has diminished in comparison with previous years and the number and percentage of deaths attributable to the smoking have increased in the last 20 years., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier España, S.L.U.
