There is an interaction between dendrocytes and mast cells in the skin. However, in elastosis-related diseases such as actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC), this interaction remains unknown. We investigated the presence of intact and degranulated mast cells in AC and LLSCC. Associations of mast cells with factor XIIIa+ dendrocytes and inflammatory infiltrate were assessed. Forty cases of AC (20 with low-grade and 20 with high-grade epithelial dysplasia), 50 cases of LLSCC, and 10 cases of normal oral mucosa were evaluated. Toluidine blue staining was performed to identify mast cells, and mast cell densities were calculated in the inflammatory infiltrate. Factor XIIIa+ dendrocytes were immunohistochemically quantified. The highest ratio of intact/degranulated mast cells density was detected in LLSCC (5.9 cells/mm2), followed by AC with high-grade epithelial dysplasia (4.8 cells/mm2). Statistically significant differences were found in the density of intact mast cells compared to degranulated mast cells in AC with low-grade epithelial dysplasia (p<0.001), AC with high-grade epithelial dysplasia (p=0.005), and LLSCC (p<0.001). A positive correlation between degranulated mast cells and total inflammatory infiltrate (p=0.03) was observed in the LLSCC group. The expression of factor XIIIa+ dendrocytes was highest in AC with low-grade epithelial dysplasia (16.5 cells/mm2). The link between mast cell density, factor XIIIa+ dendrocytes, and inflammatory infiltrate indicates a potential crosstalk in lip carcinogenesis.

Objective: To describe the clinicopathological features of 3 new cases of soft-tissue keratocyst (STK) of the buccal mucosa from Brazil., Materials and Methods: Clinical data from 3 patients diagnosed with STK were obtained from the archives of the Laboratory of Oral Pathology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro- Brazil from 2020 to 2023. Two oral pathologists reviewed conventional hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of each case. Immunohistochemical stainings for CK19, Bcl-2, CD138, D2-40, EMA, and Ki-67 were performed in all cases., Results: Case 1 was a 58-year-old man with a 2-year history of painless swelling of the right buccal mucosa, measuring approximately 5 cm. Case 2 was of a 44-year-old man with a painful swelling in the left buccal mucosa lasting 3 years with drainage to the oral cavity. Case 3 was of a 74-year-old woman with a painful swelling in the left buccal mucosa of unknown duration. Microscopic evaluation of all 3 cases revealed a cyst lined with a few cell layers composed of columnar palisading basal cells and a corrugated parakeratin surface. The capsule comprised fibrous connective tissue with variable amounts of blood vessels with hemorrhage, nerve bundles, fat tissue, striated muscle fibers, and the absence of pilosebaceous units. No recurrence was observed after complete surgical removal. All epithelial layers of the 3 cases expressed positivity for CK19 and CD138, the basal cells were positive for Bcl-2 and D2-40, and the superficial epithelial layer was positive for EMA. All cases demonstrated a low proliferation index by Ki-67., Conclusion: This study represents a series of 3 cases of STK that affected the posterior buccal mucosa of middle-aged patients from Brazil, sharing histopathological and immunohistochemical features with odontogenic keratocyst., (© 2024. This study evaluated feasibility statistically and analyzed, during the freezing period, the relationship between brightness temperature (Tb) data of the 37V polarisation and the GR3719 (Gradient Ratio 37V and 19V) obtained by Special Sensor Microwave/Imager from F11 and F13 satellites with sea ice thickness (SIT) data obtained in the Weddell Sea through Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate program. The multiple linear regression (MLR) was applied at 1,520 points, with 70% of these points being randomly separated to generate the MLR and 30% to carry out the validation. To perform the temporal mapping, the MLR was applied only to pixels with sea ice concentration (SIC) ≥ 90%, obtained through the fraction image calculated from the spectral linear mixing model (SLMM) using the Tb in the channels and polarizations 19H, 19V and 37V. The results of the SLMM validation process for estimating the SIC were σ = 10.5%, RMSE = 11.0%, and bias = -2.8%, and the SIT based on the MLR, the results were R² = 0.57, RMSE = 0.268 m, and bias = 0.103 m. In the SIT mapping, we highlight the trend of thickness reduction on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula during the period 1992-2009.

Objective: To report the clinicopathologic features of acquired oral syphilis cases in South American countries., Materials and Methods: Clinical data were retrospectively collected from the records of 18 oral diagnostic services in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Peru. Serologies of nontreponemal and treponemal tests were used for diagnosis., Results: The series comprised 339 cases of acquired oral syphilis. Secondary syphilis ranked as the most common stage (86.7%). Lesions were more frequent among males (58.0%) and young adults with a mean age of 33.3 years. Individuals aged 20-29 years were most affected (35.3%). The most commonly involved sites were the tongue (31.6%), lip/labial commissure (25.1%), and hard/soft palate (20.4%). Clinically, acquired oral syphilis usually presented as mucous patches (28.4%), papules (25.7%), and ulcers (18.1%). Skin manifestations occurred in 67.7% of individuals, while lymphadenopathy and fever were observed in 61.3% and 11.6% of all subjects, respectively. Most patients were treated with the benzathine penicillin G antibiotic., Conclusion: This report validates the spread of acquired oral syphilis infection among young adults in South America. Our directives include accessible diagnostic tools for proper disease screening, surveillance, and counselling of affected individuals, especially in low- and middle-income countries., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the immunoexpression profiles of breast cancer 1 (BRCA1) and acetyl-histone H3 (AcH3) in squamous cell carcinoma of the mobile tongue (SCC-MT) and their correlation with epidemiologic data and the histopathological grade of tumors., Study Design: Incisional biopsies of 43 SCC-MT were submitted to immunohistochemistry for AcH3 and BRCA1. Samples were microscopically graded as well differentiated (n = 21) or poorly differentiated (n = 22). Both groups were submitted to statistical analysis (P < .05) regarding the percentage of positive cells., Results: Thirty-nine cases were positive for AcH3 (91%), but no difference was observed for the histologic grading (P = .27). Positivity for BRCA1 was observed in all samples regardless of their cellular locations. Most cases in the poorly differentiated group presented with less than 10% nuclear staining (P < .01) and a predominance of cytoplasmic staining (P = .034). The well-differentiated group showed nuclear staining in most of the cases, with more than 50% of cells staining positive (P < .01)., Conclusion: AcH3 and BRCA1 were expressed in all samples. Background: The diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial mature T/NK-cell neoplasms is challenging because of their rarity, morphological heterogeneity and complex immunophenotype with scarce available data describing their clinical and microscopic aspects. Therefore, in this study, we investigated a series of mature T/NK-cell neoplasms affecting this anatomical region and provided an updated literature review., Methods: Cases diagnosed as mature T/NK-cell lymphomas affecting the oral and maxillofacial region were retrospectively retrieved from six pathology files and their diagnoses were confirmed using haematoxylin and eosin-stained slides, immunohistochemical reactions and in situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) detection. Patients' clinical data were collected from their pathology forms., Results: A total of 22 cases were included in this study. Eleven (50%) consisted of extranodal NK/T-cell lymphomas, nasal type; eight (36.4%) were peripheral T-cell lymphomas, NOS; two (9.1%) were adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphomas, and one (4.5%) was an ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Overall, males predominated, with a mean age of 55.7 years. The palate was the most affected site (50%), and tumours usually presented as destructive and painful ulcers. EBV was present in all cases of extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma nasal type but was absent in the other subtypes., Conclusion: Among mature T/NK-cell lymphomas of the oral and maxillofacial region, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, NOS predominated.
