This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the additive manufacturing (AM) of cobalt chromium Co-Cr and titanium Ti alloy clasps for clinical use. After scanning the Ni-Cr die of the first molar, Akers' clasps were designed using computer-aided design/ computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). The clasps were manufactured from Co-Cr-W dental alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy powder using AM machines. Then, they were divided into two groups. The initial retentive force of the clasps was measured using a universal testing machine. Cyclic loading of the clasps was carried out by a specially designed insertion-removal testing apparatus in wet condition up to 5000 cycles. Retentive force was measured at 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 cycles. Moreover, the intaglio surface of each clasp was scanned using the scanner; and superimposition between the pre- and post-cycling clasp files was performed to evaluate deformation after cyclic loading. The fitting surfaces of retentive clasp tips were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Finally, it has been found that the initial retentive force for the Co-Cr group was 10.81 ± 0.37 N, and for the Ti group was 5.41 ± 0.18 N. Additionally, during the testing periods, both Co-Cr and Ti clasps continued to lose retentive force within the cycles of placement and removal. This effect was more prominent in the Co-Cr than in the Ti clasps. The distances between pre- and post-cycling in the retentive arm were -0.290 ± 0.11 mm and -0.004 ± 0.01 mm in Co-Cr and Ti alloys, respectively, and in the reciprocal arm were -0.072 ± 0.04 mm and -0.032 ± 0.04 mm in Co-Cr and Ti alloys, respectively. The retentive force required to remove the Ti clasps was found to be significantly lower than those required to dislodge the Co-Cr clasps. Globally, obesity has become one of the major health problems. This study was conducted to evaluate the anti-obesity potential of Cymbopogon schoenanthus methanolic extract (CS) in rats. Fifty male Wistar rats of six to eight weeks old, 100-120 g body weight (BW) were randomly assigned into 5 groups (n = 10): The control group was fed a basal diet. CS-group was supplied with basal diet and orally given CS (200 mg/kg BW) for 12 weeks. HFD-group was fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 18 weeks. HFD + CS-group was fed on HFD and CS HFD then CS-group was fed HFD for 12 weeks then shifted to basal diet and CS for another 6 weeks. Phytochemical analysis of CS indicated the presence of various terpenes and flavonoid compounds. Among the compounds characterized are quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, orientin, eudesmene, cymbopogonol, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, and linolenic acid. Supplementation of HFD significantly increased the body weight, levels of serum triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipo-protein (HDL), glucose, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities. In addition, HFD up-regulated the protein expression of uncoupling protein (UCP)-1 in both brown and white adipose tissue; and the expression of hepatic mRNA of sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)-1c and SREBP-2. However, it decreased the serum level of HDL, and protein expression level of UCP-1 in both brown and white adipose tissue. Treatment of HFD-fed animals with CS extract either concurrently (HFD + CS-group), or after obesity induction (HFD then CS-group) significantly reversed all HFD-induced alterations in body weight; food intake; serum biochemical profile (including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia); and tissue gene expressions. These results indicate that CS methanolic extract ameliorated HFD-induced obesity, serum biochemical, hepatic, and adipose tissue gene expression alterations. Purpose: This study was conducted to release the debate and examine the short-term impact of KT on the quadriceps muscle following arthroscopic surgery for partial meniscectomy., Patients and Methods: As part of a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 40 people who had an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) were randomly put into two groups, A and B. Group A received Kinesio tape (KT) for the superficial heads of the quadriceps muscle, while group B received placebo KTk. After 10 minutes of KT application, the peak torque of both groups was measured using a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer., Results: Peak torque showed a significant increase in group A in comparison with group B during angular velocity 60◦/Sec. Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most complex neurodevelopmental disorders. It affects almost all human physiological systems. Individuals with ASD often display dysregulation in their autonomic nervous system (ANS), which may elicit differing effects across age groups. Also, studying the ANS missed several important parameters related to ANS. Studying the ANS is crucial in developing adaptive behavioural strategies and maintaining communication abilities and social behaviours. Thus, this study compared the immediate effect of physical activity on the ANS in individuals with ASD in different age groups., Methods: 200 participants (106 males and 94 females) took part in a double-blinded randomised design. All participants were divided into four groups according to their age (4-7, 7-10, 10-13 and 14-18 years old). Participants performed a 60 min treadmill walk. The main outcome measurements were heart rate (HR), saturation of peripheral oxygen (SpO 2 ), respiratory rate (RR) and end-tidal carbon dioxide (etCO 2 )., Results: Before the study, there were non-significant differences between groups in their physical characteristics (body mass index, Childhood Autism Rating Scale, physical activity level, both parents' existence, aerobic capacity and gender) (p>0.05). At baseline measurements, there were non-significant differences between all groups for all outcome measurements (p>0.05). Immediately after physical activity, there was significant difference between group 1 and other groups (p<0.05), while all other differences were non-significant (p>0.05). At the follow-up (after 15 min of rest), group 1 maintained significant differences with the other groups for all outcome measurements (p<0.05), while there were non-significant differences between the other three groups (p>0.05)., Conclusion: This study revealed that the SpO 2 significantly decreased immediately after the physical activity, while HR, RR and etCO 2 significantly increased immediately after physical activity in comparison to the baseline measurements. Contrary to other ANS parameters (SpO 2 , RR and etCO 2 ), HR in early ages (4-7 years old) was higher after physical activity and remained elevated longer than other ages. The flow behaviour of AA2060 Al alloy under warm/hot deformation conditions is complicated because of its dependency on strain rates (ε˙), strain (ε), and deformation modes. Thus, it is crucial to reveal and predict the flow behaviours of this alloy at a wide range of temperatures (T) and ε˙ using different constitutive models. Firstly, the isothermal tensile tests were carried out via a Gleeble-3800 thermomechanical simulator at a T range of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 °C and ε˙ range of 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 s -1 to reveal the warm/hot flow behaviours of AA2060 alloy sheet. Consequently, three phenomenological-based constitutive models (L-MJC, S1-MJC, S2-MJC) and a modified Zerilli-Armstrong (MZA) model representing physically based constitutive models were developed to precisely predict the flow behaviour of AA2060 alloy sheet under a wide range of T and ε˙. The predictability of the developed constitutive models was assessed and compared using various statistical parameters, including the correlation coefficient ( R ), average absolute relative error ( AARE ), and root mean square error ( RMSE ). By comparing the results determined from these models and those obtained from experimentations, and confirmed by R , AARE , and RMSE values, it is concluded that the predicted stresses determined from the S2-MJC model align closely with the experimental stresses, demonstrating a remarkable fit compared to the S1-MJC, L-MJC, and MZA models. This is because of the linking impact between softening, the strain rate, and strain hardening in the S2-MJC model. It is widely known that the dislocation process is affected by softening and strain rates. This is attributed to the interactions that occurred between ε and ε˙ from one side and between ε, ε˙, and T from the other side using an extensive set of constants correlating the constitutive components of dynamic recovery and softening mechanisms.

(1) Background: Neck pain intensity, psychosocial factors, and physical function have been identified as potential predictors of neck disability. Machine learning algorithms have shown promise in classifying patients based on their neck disability status. So, the current study was conducted to identify predictors of neck disability in patients with neck pain based on clinical findings using machine learning algorithms. (2) Methods: Ninety participants with chronic neck pain took part in the study. Demographic characteristics in addition to neck pain intensity, the neck disability index, cervical spine contour, and surface electromyographic characteristics of the axioscapular muscles were measured. Participants were categorised into high disability and low disability groups based on the median value (22.2) of their neck disability index scores. Several regression and classification machine learning models were trained and assessed using a 10-fold cross-validation method; also, MANCOVA was used to compare between the two groups. (3) Results: The multilayer perceptron (MLP) revealed the highest adjusted R2 of 0.768, while linear discriminate analysis showed the highest receiver characteristic operator (ROC) area under the curve of 0.91. Pain intensity was the most important feature in both models with the highest effect size of 0.568 with p < 0.001. (4) Conclusions: The study findings provide valuable insights into pain as the most important predictor of neck disability in patients with cervical pain. Tailoring interventions based on pain can improve patient outcomes and potentially prevent or reduce neck disability.

Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and solid-state thermomechanical treatment (TMT) via friction stir processing (FSP) have been shown to enhance the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. The current work investigates the effects of PWHT and TMT on the microstructure and mechanical performance of AA6082-T6 welded butt joints welded using the MIG process. The 5 mm thick AA 6082-T6 plates were joined in butt configuration using MIG welding with ER 5356 filler wire, 120 A current, 0.3 mm/s weld speed, and argon shielding gas at 15 L/min flow rate. PWHT was performed on the MIG welds per the T6 temper procedure. TMT was implemented via FSP using a pinless tool rotating at 800 rpm and traversing speed at 200 mm/min with a 3° tilt angle. Microstructural analysis, hardness mapping, tensile testing, and fracture surface evaluation were utilized to characterize the as-welded, PWHT, and TMT samples. The results demonstrate that both PWHT and TMT significantly refine and homogenize the microstructures of the welded joints. However, the TMT samples displayed superior hardness and tensile strength compared to the as-welded and PWHT conditions. The TMT-processed welds achieved approximately 99% joint efficiency versus only 69% and 85% for the as-welded and PWHT samples. Purpose: The primary objective was to investigate the effects of Pilates exercises on CS, and the secondary objective was to assess static trunk balance after recovery from COVID-19., Patients and Methods: 145 recovered COVID-19 university students between the ages of 19 and 25 participated in this single-blinded, randomized controlled trial study. The participants were divided into a Pilates group and a control group, each of which received a home exercise program. Core muscle endurance was measured using the five basic endurance tests and static balance using the Prokin system with open eyes (OE) and closed eyes (CE) at baseline and after three months of treatment., Results: All measured parameters showed improvement within the groups after treatment. Group comparison revealed a significant increase in the Pilates group in all core endurance tests (P<0.001). The Prokin system results showed improvement in the Pilates group after treatment, while perimeter with OE, CE, and ellipse area with EC decreased (P<0.001), but there was no significant difference in ellipse with OE between the groups., Conclusion: Pilates exercises positively improved core muscle endurance and trunk balance in people infected with COVID-19, which will be reflected in their quality of movement patterns and quality of life., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work., (© 2024 Amin et al.)

The hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure of Mg alloys lead to poor formability as well as other undesirable mechanical behaviors in an otherwise highly sought-after alloy for commercial use. This study investigates the evolution of microstructure, texture, corrosion and mechanical behaviors in Mg-Zn-Mn (ZM31) alloy after processing using Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP). Dynamic recrystallization was evident in the ECAP-processed samples, correlated with a substantial fiber structure, and resulted in the attainment of notable grain refinement and high lattice strain. Average grain sizes of 2.2 and 2 μm were achieved via 2 and 4-Pass Bc processing, respectively. This significant refinement yielded lower corrosion rates through enhancement of the thickness, coherency, and stability of formed protective oxide layers. The corrosion rate in the NaCl medium was substantially enhanced by 99.5% after four passes via route Bc. The recrystallized fine structure was found to have contributed to yield strength, ultimate strength, and microhardness improvements. Deformation enhanced yield and ultimate strengths by 132% and 64%, respectively. The present work is aimed to assess the protective influence of zinc oxide resveratrol nanoparticles against oxidative stress-associated testicular dysfunction. The number of 50 male albino rats were randomly separated into five groups (n = 10): Group I, control: rats gavage distilled water orally; Group II, Levofloxacin: rats that administered Levofloxacin (LFX) softened in distilled water at a dosage of 40 mg/kg -1 BW orally every other day; Group III, Zn-RSV: rats administered with Zn-RSV (zinc oxide resveratrol in distilled water at a dose 20 mg/kg -1 BW orally every other day; Group IV, (LFX + Zn-RSV): rats that were administered with Levofloxacin along with Zn-RSV nPs; Group V, Levofloxacin + Zn: rats were administered with Levofloxacin and Zno at a dose of 20 mg/kg -1 BW orally every other day as mentioned before. This study lasted for 2 months. Sera were collected to assess luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone values. Testicular tissues were utilized to evaluate levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and catalase (CAT). Semen samples were utilized to measure their quality (motility, concentration, and vitality). Histopathological and immune histochemical techniques investigated the morphological changes in the testis. Rats treated with Levofloxacin showed significantly lower levels of serum LH, testosterone, FSH, testicular enzymatic NO, catalase, SOD, BAX, and BCL-2 immune reactivity and sperm quality but significantly greater testicular malondialdehyde and caspase-3 immuno-reactivity Compared to both control and zinc oxide resveratrol treatment. Zinc oxide resveratrol nanoparticles ameliorated the harmful side effects of Levofloxacin. Improvements were more pronounced in the co-treatment (LFX + Zn-RSV) Zinc oxide resveratrol group than in the co-treatment (LFX + Zno) Zinc oxide group. This study investigated the effect of a hemispherical friction stir welding (FSW) tool on the heat generation and mechanical properties of dissimilar butt welded AA5083 and AA7075 alloys. FSW was performed on the dissimilar aluminum alloys AA5083-H111 and AA7075-T6 using welding speeds of 25, 50, and 75 mm/min. The tool rotation rate was kept constant at 500 rpm. An analytical model was developed to calculate heat generation and temperature distribution during the FSW process utilizing a hemispherical tool. The experimental results were compared to the calculated data. The latter confirms the accuracy of the analytical model, demonstrating a high degree of agreement. Sound FSW dissimilar joints were achieved at welding speeds of 50 and 25 mm/min. Meanwhile, joints created at a welding speed of 75 mm/min exhibited a tunnel-like defect, which can be attributed to the minimal heat generated at this particular welding speed. At a lower welding speed of 25 mm/min, a higher tensile strength of the dissimilar FSWed joints AA5083 and AA7075 was achieved with a joint efficiency of over 97%.

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of hydroforming (HF) technology coupled with response surface optimization for producing high-quality five-branched AISI 304 stainless steel tubes with different diameters, addressing the shortcomings of traditional manufacturing processes. Conventional techniques often result in issues with multiple consumables, low precision, and subpar performance. The research focuses on finding optimal forming parameters for a more effective process. Initial attempts at a five-branched tube proved unfeasible. Instead, a multi-step forming approach was adopted, starting with the formation of the upper branch tube followed by the two reducing lower branch tubes, a strategy termed "first three, then five". This method, enhanced by a subsequent solid solution treatment, yielded promising results: the combined height of the upper and lower branches was 141.1 mm, with a maximum thinning rate of 26.67%, reduced to 25.33% after trimming. These outcomes met the product usage requirements. Additionally, the study involved designing and developing dies for manufacturing five-branched tubes with different diameters using servo HF equipment. The effectiveness of the multi-step forming process and parameter combinations was confirmed through experimental validation, aligning closely with the FE simulation results. The maximum thinning rate observed in the experiments was 27.60%, indicating that FE simulation and response surface methodology can effectively guide the production of high-quality parts with superior performance.

Forming tubes with various bending radii without changing the bending dies is much easier for the 3D free bending forming (FBF) process. In the 3D-FBF process, different bending radii were realized by adapting the eccentricities of the bending dies. The accuracy of the U-R curve is crucial for the precision forming of complex bending components. In this study, the U-R relation curve of the Al alloy tube with a specific friction coefficient, fixed geometry size, clearance between tubes, and bending die was fitted first based on the forming results of AA6061-T6 tubes under different eccentricities. Second, the U-R relationship curve based on the experiment is used to propose the U-R relationship's mathematical formula based on many hypotheses. Finally, the modified U-R mathematical formula was applied in the finite element (FE) simulation and the actual FBF experiments for the AA6061-T6 Al alloy complex shape space bending members. The U-R relationship curve's reliability was verified by comparing the simulation and experimental results. The results obtained from the modified U-R relationship align well with the FE modeling results and can be directly applied to the bending process for the intended components.

The reduction in oxygen partial pressure at high altitudes leads to diminished oxygen saturation in the arteries, stimulating erythropoietin production and erythropoiesis to restore appropriate oxygenation. While many studies have explored acclimatization to high altitude and its effects on complete blood count (CBC) parameters, our research uniquely examined both male and female healthy individuals, emphasizing the novelty of gender-specific observations. We analyzed 1,160 individuals in Taif (Al Hada), east Saudi Arabia, a high-altitude region, and compared them to 1,044 counterparts in Jeddah, at sea level. Our results revealed significant variations in CBC parameters, including white blood count, red blood count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, reflecting the body's hypoxic response. These variations were observed in both genders, with specific differences noted between males and females. For example, NEU (neutrophils), representing the absolute count of a type of white blood cell essential in the immune system's defense, showed significant variations for males. The male results show that the variation in males between the sea level and high altitudes indicated significant p-values for all CBC parameters except NEU between at sea level (Jeddah city), whose p-value was 0.8696, and at high altitude (Taif city, Al Hada). In contrast, MONO (monocytes), another type of white blood cell involved in immune response, and RBC (red blood cells), responsible for oxygen transport, were mentioned but did not show significant variations for females. The full results for females showed significant results (P<0.0001) for BASO, HCT, HGB, MCH, MCHC, MPV, PLT, RDW, and WBC between the sea-level altitude and high altitude for females. Also, EOS and LYM showed significant P-values of 0.0002 and 0.0001, respectively, while MONO, NEU, and RBC indicated no significance between the sea-level altitude and high altitude for females. The p-values of MONO, NEU, and RBC, respectively, were 0.1907, 0.1259, and 0.0677. The results for both genders combined showed significant variations of all CBC parameters (P<0.0001) between the sea-level altitude and high altitude except for MONO, NEU, and RBC, which were not significant for both males and females, with p-values of 0.1589, 0.2911, and 0.0595, respectively. All unhealthy individuals were excluded from the study with any condition that would cause significant changes in CBC parameters and would skew the results, ensuring a focus on physiological adaptations in healthy subjects. The Ti6Al4V alloy has many advantages, such as being lightweight, formal, and resistant to corrosion. This makes it highly desirable for various applications, especially in the aerospace industry. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is a technique that allows for the production of detailed and unique parts with great flexibility in design. However, there are challenges when it comes to achieving high-quality surfaces and porosity formation in the material, which limits the wider use of LPBF. To tackle these challenges, this study uses statistical techniques called Design of Experiments (DoE) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to investigate and optimise the process parameters of LPBF for making Ti6Al4V components with improved density and surface finish. The parameters examined in this study are laser power, laser scan speed, and hatch space. The optimisation study results show that using specific laser settings, like a laser power of 175 W, a laser scan speed of 1914 mm/s, and a hatch space of 53 µm, produces Ti6Al4V parts with a high relative density of 99.54% and low top and side surface roughness of 2.6 µm and 4.3 µm, respectively. This promising outcome demonstrates the practicality of optimising Ti6Al4V and other metal materials for a wide range of applications, thereby overcoming existing limitations and further expanding the potential of LPBF while minimising inherent process issues.

Selecting an economically suitable welding technique and optimizing welding parameters to obtain high joint quality is considered a challenge for expanding the 5xxx aluminum alloy series in various industrial applications. This work aims to investigate the effect of applying different welding techniques, tungsten inert gas (TIG) and metal inert gas (MIG), as fusion welding processes compared to friction stir welding (FSW), a solid-state joining process, on the joint performance of the produced 5 mm thick similar AA5083-H111 butt weldments at different welding conditions. Different methods were used to evaluate the quality of the produced joints, including visual inspection, radiographic testing (RT), and macrostructure evaluation, in addition to hardness and tensile tests. The fracture surface of the tensile-failed specimens was also investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Furthermore, the current study ended with an economic analysis of the welding techniques used. The results showed that, for the friction stir-welded joints, the radiographic films revealed defect-free joints at the two applied travel speeds of 100 mm/min and 400 mm/min and a constant tool rotating speed of 400 rpm. In addition, only one joint was welded by MIG at a welding current of 130 Amp, with a 19 L/min flow rate of pure argon. In contrast, the radiographic films showed internal defects such as lack of fusion (LOF), lack of penetration (LOP), and porosity (P) for the two joints welded by TIG and one joint welded by MIG. The hardness of the welded joints was enhanced over the AA5083-H111 base material (BM) by 24-29, 31-35, and 46-50% for the MIG, TIG, and FSW joints, respectively. The maximum ultimate tensile strength was obtained for the FSW joint welded at a 400 mm/min travel speed. Adopting FSW in shipbuilding applications can further produce the AA5083-H11 joints with higher quality and efficiency than fusion welding techniques such as MIG and TIG processes. In addition, time and cost comparisons between TIG, MIG, and FSW were performed for five-millimeter-thick and one-meter-long AA5083-H111.

The current work investigates the possibility of fabricating additive manufacturing products in solid-state form, from AA2011-T6 of 40 mm diameter rods as a feedstock, using an additive friction stir deposition (A-FSD) technique. The use of large diameter feedstocks, especially high-strength aluminum alloys (2XXX series), is a challenge, as it necessitates high power and the critical selection of the optimal A-FSD parameters, such as feed rate and spindle rotation speed. The study included applying a wide range of spindle rotation speeds, ranging from 400 to 1200 rpm, at three levels of feeding rates of 1, 3, and 5 mm/min. The AA2011-T6 friction stir deposited parts (FSDPs) were visually evaluated. This was followed by an examination of macrostructures through the thickness of the fabricated specimens. The characterization of microstructures was also carried out using optical microscopy and a scanning electron microscope equipped with advanced EDS analysis. Furthermore, the mechanical properties in terms of hardness and compressive strength of the AA2011-T6 base material (BM) and deposited materials were evaluated. Sound, additively manufactured products were successfully fabricated from 40 mm diameter AA2011-T6 feedstocks using the suggested deposition variables of 600 and 800 rpm spindle speeds and feeding rates of 1, 3, and 5 mm/min. The results indicated that the spindle speed and feeding rate govern the quality of the FSDPs. Furthermore, the axial load during the A-FSD process increased with increasing these parameters. In comparison to the AA2011-T6 BM, the additively deposited materials showed a refined grain structure and uniform dispersion of the fragment precipitates in their continuous multi-layers. The reduction ratio in grain size attains 71.56%, 76%, and 81.31% for the FSDPs processed at 800 rpm spindle speed and feeding rates of 1, 3 and 5 mm/min, respectively, compared to the grain size of BM. The Al 2 Cu and Al 7 Cu 2 Fe intermetallics are detected in the AA2011-T6 BM, and their deposited parts are in different shapes of spherical, almost spherical, irregular, and rod-like shapes. The compressive strength and hardness of the deposited parts increased with increasing spindle speed and feeding speeds. At a spindle speed of 800 rpm and a 5 mm/min feeding rate, the higher hardness and compressive strength gained were 85% and 93%, respectively, from that of the AA2011-T6 feedstock.

Magnesium alloys are still attractive materials for applications that necessitate light weight due to their low density, moderate strength, and good corrosion resistance. AZ91 is one of the widely applied magnesium alloys due to its very good castability and strength. However, one of the drawbacks of magnesium alloys is the low elastic modulus. So, reinforcing AZ91 with carbon short fibers with the aim of further increasing the strength and improving the elastic modulus is investigated in this study. Squeeze cast AZ91-23 vol.% carbon short carbon (AZ91-C) and the unreinforced AZ91 are deeply examined by tensile testing at different temperatures (20, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 °C). Tensile stress-strain curves are measured and the tensile parameters (yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and strain) are defined and presented against the test temperature. Yield stress of AZ91 at 20 °C (109 MPa) is doubled (226 MPa) in the reinforced AZ91-C. Yield stress is found to slightly decrease with increasing the test temperature. Ultimate tensile strength of AZ91 at 20 °C (198 MPa) is increased (262 MPa) in the reinforced AZ91-C. The improvement of the ultimate tensile strength due to reinforcing increases with increasing the test temperature. Flow curves are determined and described by a modified Mecking-Kocks relationship and the flow parameters are determined and described as a function of the test temperature. Microstructure investigation was undertaken of the fractured tensile specimens at the grain boundaries rich in eutectic structure formed at the grain boundaries. Mixed brittle/ductile fracture mode is detected on the fracture surface of unreinforced AZ91, while the SEM investigations show matrix/carbon fiber detachment and fiber fracture as main fracture modes.

Thermal expansion measurements were used to characterize phase transformations in metastable β-Ti alloys (Ti15MoxSi) without and with various Si additions (where x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2 in wt.%) during linear heating at two heating rates of 5 and 10 °C/min up to 850 °C. For this study, five alloys were developed and examined in terms of their presence phases, microstructures, and starting and final transformation temperatures. According to the results, all of the as-cast samples primarily include an equiaxed β-Ti phase. The influence of phase transformation on the material dimensions was discussed and compared with the variations in Si contents. The transformation was investigated using a dilatometric technique for the developed alloys during continuous heating and cooling. The dilatometric curve of heating revealed two distinct reflection points as the heating temperature increased. The starting transformation temperature (T s ) to obtain the ω-phase was reported at 359 °C without Si addition; whereas the final transformation temperature (T f ) of the dissolution of α-phase was obtained at 572 °C at a heating rate of 10 °C/min. At 2 wt.% Si, the first derivative curves reported T s and T f transforming temperatures of 314-565 °C (at a 5 °C/min heating rate) and 270-540 °C (at a 10 °C/min heating rate), respectively. The T s and T f transforming temperatures were significantly decreased with Si additions, which decreased the β-transus temperature. Moreover, the thermal expansion coefficient curves of the investigated alloys without and with 2 wt.% Si were studied. The transformation heating curves have an S-shaped pattern, according to the results.

Carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is increasingly being used in various applications including aerospace, automotive, wind energy, sports, and robotics, which makes the precision modelling of its machining operations a critical research area. However, the classic finite element modelling (FEM) approach has limitations in capturing the complexity of machining, particularly with regard to the interaction between the fibre-matrix interface and the cutting edge. To overcome this limitation, a hybrid approach that integrates smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPHs) with FEM was developed and tested in this study. The hybrid FEM-SPH approach was compared with the classic FEM approach and validated with experimental measurements that took into account the cutting tool's round edge. The results showed that the hybrid FEM-SPH approach outperformed the classic FEM approach in predicting the thrust force and bounce back of CFRP machining due to the integrated cohesive model and the element conversion after failure in the developed approach. The accurate representation of the fibre-matrix interface in the FEM-SPH approach resulted in predicting precise chip formation in terms of direction and morphology. Nonetheless, the computing time of the FEM-SPH approach is higher than the classic FEM. The developed hybrid FEM-SPH model is promising for improving the accuracy of simulation in machining processes, combining the benefits of both techniques.

This study aimed to propose a new approach for predicting the warm deformation behaviour of AA2060-T8 sheets by coupling computational homogenization (CH) with crystal plasticity (CP) modeling. Firstly, to reveal the warm deformation behaviour of the AA2060-T8 sheet, isothermal warm tensile testing was accomplished using a Gleeble-3800 thermomechanical simulator at the temperatures and strain rates that varied from 373 to 573 K and 0.001 to 0.1 s -1 . Then, a novel crystal plasticity model was proposed for describing the grains' behaviour and reflecting the crystals' actual deformation mechanism under warm forming conditions. Afterward, to clarify the in-grain deformation and link the mechanical behaviour of AA2060-T8 with its microstructural state, RVE elements were created to represent the microstructure of AA2060-T8, where several finite elements discretized every grain. A remarkable accordance was observed between the predicted results and their experimental counterparts for all testing conditions. This signifies that coupling CH with CP modelling can successfully determine the warm deformation behaviour of AA2060-T8 (polycrystalline metals) under different working conditions.

The current study uses three different pin eccentricities (e) and six different welding speeds to investigate the impact of pin eccentricity on friction stir welding (FSW) of AA5754-H24. To simulate and forecast the impact of (e) and welding speed on the mechanical properties of friction stir welded joints for (FSWed) AA5754-H24, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed. The input parameters for the model in this work are welding speed (WS) and tool pin eccentricity (e). The outputs of the developed ANN model include the mechanical properties of FSW AA5754-H24 (ultimate tensile strength, elongation, hardness of the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ), and hardness of the weld nugget zone (NG)). The ANN model yielded a satisfactory performance. The model has been used to predict the mechanical properties of the FSW AA5754 aluminum alloy as a function of TPE and WS with excellent reliability. Experimentally, the tensile strength is increased by increasing both the (e) and the speed, which was already captured from the ANN predictions. The R 2 values are higher than 0.97 for all the predictions, reflecting the output quality.

Lightweight magnesium alloys and magnesium matrix composites have recently become more widespread for high-efficiency applications, including automobile, aerospace, defense, and electronic industries. Cast magnesium and magnesium matrix composites are applied in many highly moving and rotating parts, these parts can suffer from fatigue loading and are consequently subjected to fatigue failure. Reversed tensile-compression low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and high-cycle fatigue (HCF) of short fibers reinforced and unreinforced AE42 have been studied at temperatures of 20 °C, 150 °C, and 250 °C. To select suitable fatigue testing conditions, tensile tests have been carried out on AE42 and the composite material AE42-C at temperatures of up to 300 °C. The Wohler curves σ a (N F ) have shown that the fatigue strength of the reinforced AE42-C in the HCF range was double that of unreinforced AE42. In the LCF range at certain strain amplitudes, the fatigue life of the composite materials is much less than that of the matrix alloys, this is due to the low ductility of this composite material. Furthermore, a slight temperature influence up to 150 °C has been established on the fatigue behavior of the AE42-C. The fatigue life curves Δ ε total (N F ) were described using the Basquin and Manson-Coffin approaches. Fracture surface investigations showed a mixed mode of serration fatigue pattern on the matrix and carbon fibers fracturing and debonding from the matrix alloy.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a common adverse effect associated with a number of chemotherapeutic agents including paclitaxel (PTX) which is used in a wide range of solid tumors. Development of PTX-induced peripheral neuropathy (PIPN) during cancer treatment requires dose reduction which limits its clinical benefits. This study is conducted to investigate the role of toll like receptor-4 (TLR4) /p38 signaling and Klotho protein expression in PIPN and the role of trimetazidine (TMZ) in this pathway. Sixty-four male Swiss albino mice were divided into 4 groups (n = 16); Group (1) injected intraperitoneally (IP) with ethanol/tween 80/saline for 8 successive days. Group (2) received TMZ (5 mg/kg, IP, day) for 8 successive days. Group (3) treated with 4 doses of PTX (4.5 mg/kg, IP) every other day over a period of 7 days. Group (4) received a combination of TMZ as group 2 and PTX as group 3. The Effect of TMZ on the antitumor activity of PTX was studied in another set of solid Ehrlich carcinoma (SEC)-bearing mice that was similarly divided as the above-mentioned set. TMZ mitigated tactile allodynia, thermal hypoalgesia, numbness and fine motor discoordination associated with PTX in Swiss mice. The results of the current study show that the neuroprotective effect of TMZ can be attributed to inhibition of TLR4/p38 signaling which also includes a reduction in matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) protein levels as well as the proinflammatory interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and preserving the levels of the anti-inflammatory IL-10. Moreover, the current study is the first to demonstrate that PTX reduces the neuronal levels of klotho protein and showed its modulation via cotreatment with TMZ. In addition, this study showed that TMZ neither alter the growth of SEC nor the antitumor activity of PTX. In conclusion, we suggest that (1) Inhibition of Klotho protein and upregulation of TLR4/p38 signals in nerve tissues may contribute to PIPN. Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) of similar AA5052-H32 joints has numerous benefits in shipbuilding, aerospace, and automotive structural applications. In addition, studying the role of tool rotation speed on the microstructure features, achieved textures, and joint performance of the friction stir spot-welded (FSSWed) joint still needs more systematic research. Different FSSWed AA5052-H32 lap joints of 4 mm thickness were produced at different heat inputs using three tool rotation speeds of 1500, 1000, and 500 rpm at a constant dwell time of 2 s. The applied thermal heat inputs for achieving the FSSW processes were calculated. The produced joints were characterized by their appearance, macrostructures, microstructures, and mechanical properties (hardness contour maps and maximum tensile-shear load) at room temperature. The grain structure and texture developed for all the FSSWed joints were deeply investigated using an advanced electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) technique and compared with the base material (BM). The main results showed that the average hardness value of the stir zone (SZ) in the welded joints is higher than that in the AA5052-H32 BM for all applied rotation speeds, and it decreases as the rotation speed increases from 500 to 1000 rpm. This SZ enhancement in hardness compared to the BM cold-rolled grain structure is caused by the high grain refining due to the dynamic recrystallization associated with the FSSW. The average grain size values of the stir zones are 11, 9, and 4 µm for the FSSWed joints processed at 1500, 1000, and 500 rpm, respectively, while the BM average grain size is 40 µm. The simple shear texture with B/-B components mainly dominates the texture. Compared to the welded joints, the joint processed at 500 rpm and a 2 s duration time attains the highest tensile-shear load value of 4330 N. This value decreases with increasing rotation speed to reach 2569 N at a rotation speed of 1500. After tensile testing of the FSSWed joints, the fracture surface was also examined and discussed.

This study presents a thorough experimental investigation utilising the design of experiments and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine the impact of machining process parameters on chip formation mechanisms, machining forces, workpiece surface integrity, and damage resulting from the orthogonal cutting of unidirectional CFRP. The study identified the mechanisms behind chip formation and found it to significantly impact the workpiece orientation of fibre and the tool's cutting angle, resulting in increased fibre bounceback at larger fibre orientation angles and when using smaller rake angle tools. Increasing the depth of cut and fibre orientation angle results in an increased damage depth, while using higher rake angles reduces it. An analytical model based on response surface analysis for predicting machining forces, damage, surface roughness, and bounceback was also developed. The ANOVA results indicate that fibre orientation is the most significant factor in machining CFRP, while cutting speed is insignificant. Increasing fibre orientation angle and depth leads to deeper damage, while larger tool rake angles reduce damage. Machining workpieces with 0° fibre orientation angle results in the least subsurface damage, and surface roughness is unaffected by the tool rake angle for fibre orientations between 0° to 90° but worsens for angles greater than 90°. Optimisation of cutting parameters was subsequently carried out to improve machined workpiece surface quality and reduce forces. The experimental results showed that negative rake angle and cutting at moderately low speeds (366 mm/min) are the optimal conditions for machining laminates with a fibre angle of θ = 45°. On the other hand, for composite materials with fibre angles of θ = 90° and θ = 135°, it is recommended to use a high positive rake angle and cutting speeds.

Aims: Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent with vast arrays of therapeutic activity. Currently, its medical use is limited due to its numerous adverse events, including nephrotoxicity. This study aimed to follow the molecular mechanisms behind the potential renoprotective action of lactoferrin (LF) against cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced renal injury., Materials and Methods: For fulfillment of our aim, Spragw-Dwaly rats were orally administrated LF (300 mg/kg) for seven consecutive days, followed by a single intraperitoneal injection of CP (150 mg/kg)., Key Findings: Treatment of CP-injured rats with LF significantly reduced the elevated creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), markedly upregulated Nrf2/HO-1 signaling with consequent increase in renal total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and decrease in renal malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Furthermore, LF treatment significantly reduced the elevated renal p-ERK1/2 expression, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) levels in CP-treated animals. Interestingly, LF treatment downregulated Wnt4/β-catenin signaling and increased both renal klotho gene expression and serum klotho level. Furthermore, LF treatment reduced apoptosis in kidney tissue via suppressing GSK-3β expression and modulating caspase-3 and Bcl2 levels. Histopathological examination of kidney tissue confirmed the protective effect of LF against CP-induced renal injury., Significance: The present findings document the renoprotective effect of LF against CP-induced nephropathy, which may be mediated via suppressing ERK1/2/ NF-κB and Wnt4/β-catenin trajectories and enhancing klotho expression and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling., (Copyright © 2023. The use of the friction stir welding (FSW) process as a relatively new solid-state welding technology in the aerospace industry has pushed forward several developments in different related aspects of this strategic industry. In terms of the FSW process itself, due to the geometric limitations involved in the conventional FSW process, many variants have been required over time to suit the different types of geometries and structures, which has resulted in the development of numerous variants such as refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW), stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW), and bobbin tool friction stir welding (BTFSW). In terms of FSW machines, significant development has occurred in the new design and adaptation of the existing machining equipment through the use of their structures or the new and specially designed FSW heads. In terms of the most used materials in the aerospace industry, there has been development of new high strength-to-weight ratios such as the 3rd generation aluminum-lithium alloys that have become successfully weldable by FSW with fewer welding defects and a significant improvement in the weld quality and geometric accuracy. The purpose of this article is to summarize the state of knowledge regarding the application of the FSW process to join materials used in the aerospace industry and to identify gaps in the state of the art. This work describes the fundamental techniques and tools necessary to make soundly welded joints. Typical applications of FSW processes are surveyed, including friction stir spot welding, RFSSW, SSFSW, BTFSW, and underwater FSW. Conclusions and suggestions for future development are proposed.

Friction stir-spot welding (FSSW) as a solid-state joining process for local welding offers a number of benefits for applications in the automotive, aerospace, and marine industries. In these industries, and from an economic point of view, producing spot welds at a low rotating speed and in a short time is critical for saving energy and enhancing productivity. This investigation helped fill a knowledge gap in the literature about FSSW of 4 mm similar lap joints of AA5052-H32 sheet materials, in which welding takes place over a short time period with a slow tool rotation speed. Consequently, the purpose of this work was to investigate the feasibility of FSSW 2 mm thick AA5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheets to produce 4 mm thick similar spot lap joints at various low dwell times of 1, 2, and 3 s and a constant relatively low tool rotation speed of 500 rpm. The introduced heat input for the friction stir-spot welded (FSSWed) lap joints was calculated based on the applied processing parameters. Joint appearance, cross-section macrostructures, and microstructure features of all the spot welds were evaluated. The mechanical properties (hardness contour maps and maximum tensile shear loads) were also examined. The results show that joining 2 mm sheet thickness AA5052-H32 at a low heat input in defect-free similar lap joints could be successfully achieved. The stir zone (SZ) region became wider as the dwell time increased from 1 to 3 s. The hardness value of the SZ was higher than that attained by the AA5052-H32 base material (BM) for all applied dwell times. Especially at 2 s, the hardness of the SZ was approximately 48% higher than that of the BM. This increase in hardness may be attributed to the high grain refinement of the new dynamically recrystallized grain (4 µm) in the SZ compared to the cold-rolled BM grain size (40 µm). Among the tried FSSW process variables, the dwell time of 2 s at a rotation rate of 500 rpm also produced the maximum tensile shear load of 4330 N. Finally, the locations and features of the fracture surfaces of the FSSWed joints were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the obtained results were discussed.

Coronaviruses cause respiratory and intestinal infections in animals and humans. By the end of 2019, there was an epidemic of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronaviruses have a highly mutable genome that makes them genetically and phenotypically modifiable with a potential transmission to new host species. Based on current sequence databases, all human coronaviruses have animal origins, so animals have important roles in virus spillover to humans. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of different animal species in the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Egypt. A pan-coronaviruses RT-PCR has been used for detection of possible coronaviruses infection in different species including bats, humans, birds, and dogs in Egypt during the period of November 2020 till June 2021. Ninety-two samples (46 from Rousettus aegyptiacus bats, 10 from human, 26 from wild birds, and 10 from dogs) were screened for SARS-CoV-2. Our results revealed that only human samples were SARS-CoV-2 positive for SARS-CoV-2 while all other animal and bird samples were negative. To recapitulate, our results suggest that animals may not actively transmit SARS-CoV-2 among people in Egypt during the current COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigates the effect of tool pin eccentricity and welding speed on the grain structure, crystallographic texture, and mechanical properties of friction stir welded (FSWed) AA5754-H24. Three tool pin eccentricities of 0, 0.2, and 0.8 mm at different welding speeds ranging from 100 mm/min to 500 mm/min and a constant tool rotation rate of 600 rpm were investigated. High-resolution electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) data were acquired from each weld's center of the nugget zone (NG) and processed to analyze the grain structure and texture. In terms of mechanical properties, both hardness and tensile properties were investigated. The grain structure in the NG of the joints produced at 100 mm/min, 600 rpm, and different tool pin eccentricities showed significant grain refining due to dynamic recrystallization with average grain sizes of 18, 15, and 18 µm at 0, 0.2, and 0.8 mm pin eccentricities, respectively. Increasing the welding speed from 100 to 500 mm/min further reduced the average grain size of the NG zone to 12.4, 10, and 11 µm at 0, 0.2, and 0.8 mm eccentricity, respectively. The simple shear texture dominates the crystallographic texture with both B¯/B texture component with the C component at their ideal positions after rotating the data to align the shear reference frame with the FSW reference frame in both the PFs and ODF sections. The tensile properties of the welded joints were slightly lower than the base material due to the hardness reduction in the weld zone. However, the ultimate tensile strength and the yield stress for all welded joints increased by increasing the friction stir welding (FSW) speed from 100 to 500 mm/min. Welding using the pin eccentricity of 0.2 mm resulted in the highest tensile strength; at a welding speed of 500 mm/min, it reached 97% of the base material strength. The hardness profile showed the typical W shape with a reduction in the hardness of the weld zone and a slight recovery of the hardness in the NG zone.

Heavy oil fly ash "HOFA" is the fly ash generated in power stations using heavy oil as fuel. HOFA is considered a hazardous waste because it contains considerable amounts of heavy metals. However, it contains significant amounts of vanadium "V" and nickel "Ni", which are precious metals for manufacturing processes. This paper presents a critical review of various approaches described in the literature for the recovery of V and Ni from HOFA, including processes of leaching, chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. The optimum operational parameters and their effects on recovery efficiency are discussed. The digestion mixtures of strong mineral acids used for dissolving all metals present in HOFA are also highlighted. The leaching processes of V and Ni use mainly acidic and alkaline solutions. Bioleaching is a promising environmentally friendly approach for the recovery of V and Ni through using appropriate bacteria and fungi. After leaching, V and Ni compounds are recovered and purified using various techniques, including chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. In most cases, V and Ni are recovered as thermally decomposable compounds that undergo calcination to produce V 2 O 5 and NiO. Aim: The role of surgical castration and rosuvastatin treatment on lipid profile and lipid metabolism related markers was evaluated for their prognostic significance in metastatic prostate cancer (mPC) patients., Methods: A total of 84 newly diagnosed castrated mPC patients treated with castration were recruited and divided into two groups: Group I served as control (statin non-users) while group II treated with Rosuvastatin (20 mg/day) for 6 months and served as statin users. Prostate specific antigen (PSA), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Caveolin-1 (CAV1), lipid profile (LDL, HDL, triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (TC)) and lipid metabolism related markers (aldoketoreductase (AKR1C4), HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), and soluble low density lipoprotein receptor related protein 1 (SLDLRP1)) were measured at baseline, after 3 and 6 months. Overall survival (OS) was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier and COX regression for prognostic significance., Results: Before castration, HMG-CoA reductase was elevated in patients <65 years (P = 0.009). Bone metastasis was associated with high PSA level (P = 0.013), but low HMGCR (P = 0.004). Patients with positive family history for prostate cancer showed high levels of EGFR, TG, TC, LDL, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), but low AKR1C4, SLDLRP1, CAV1 and ABCA-1 levels. Smokers had high CAV1 level (P = 0.017). After 6 months of castration and rosuvastatin administration, PSA, TG, LDL and TC were significantly reduced, while AKR1C4, HMGCR, SLDLRP1, CAV1 and ABCA-1 were significantly increased. Introduction: This study introduces a new analysis protocol for detecting real-time snowy weather conditions on freeways by utilizing trajectory-level data extracted from the Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) dataset. The data include parameters reduced from a real-time image feature extraction technique, time series data collected from external sensors, and CANbus data collected by the NDS ego-vehicles. To provide flexibility in winter maintenance, two segmentation types of one-minute and one-mile segments were used to sample snowy trips and their matched clear weather trips., Method: In this study, four non-parametric models were developed using six data assemblies to detect snowy weather on freeways. The data assemblies are arranged based on three data sources, including image database extracted from an in-vehicle video camera, sensors, and CANbus data, to examine the effectiveness of snow detection models for different data types considering real-time availability of data., Results: Overall, the developed models successfully detected snowy weather on freeways with an accuracy ranging between 76% to 89%. Results indicated that high accuracy of estimating snowy weather can be accomplished using the data fusion between external sensors data and texture parameters of images, without accessing to CANbus data., Practical Applications: Practical applications can be driven with respect to the time or distance coordinates, using different data fusion assemblies, and data availability. The current research designed a statistical model for the bobbin tool friction stir processing (BT-FSP) of AA1050 aluminum alloy using the Response Surface Method (RSM). The analysis studied the influence of tool travel speeds of 100, 200, and 300 mm/min and different pin geometries (triangle, square, and cylindrical) at a constant tool rotation speed (RS) of 600 rpm on processing 8 mm thickness AA1050. The developed mathematical model optimizes the effect of the applied BT-FSP parameters on machine torque, processing zone (PZ) temperature, surface roughness, hardness values, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). The experimental design is based on the Face Central Composite Design (FCCD), using linear and quadratic polynomial equations to develop the mathematical models. The results show that the proposed model adequately predicts the responses within the processing parameters, and the pin geometry is the most influential parameter during the BT-FSP of AA1050. The analysis of variance exhibit that the developed mathematical models can effectively predict the values of the machine torque, PZ temperature, surface roughness, hardness, and UTS with a confidence level of over 95% for the AA1050 BT-FSP. The optimization process shows that the optimum parameters to attain the highest mechanical properties in terms of hardness and tensile strength at the lowest surface roughness and machine torque are travel speed (TS) of 200 mm/min using cylindrical (Cy) pin geometry at the constant RS of 600 rpm. The PZ temperature of the processed specimens decreased with increasing TS at different pin geometries. Meanwhile, the surface roughness of the processed passes and machine torque increased with increasing the TS at different pin geometries. Increasing TS from 100 to 300 mm/min increases the hardness values of the processed materials using different pin geometries. The highest UTS of 79 MPa for the processed specimens was attained at the TS of 200 mm/min and RS of 600 rpm using the Cy pin geometry.

Joining dissimilar sheet thicknesses of AA6082-T6 alloys by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) provides many advantages in automotive and aerospace applications. The formed keyhole at the end of the FSSW process is one of the typical features after the welding process, which owns the same size as the rotating pin that remains at the joint center. This keyhole destroys the joint continuity and can stimulate serious stress concentration when the FSSW joint bears an external force. To solve this issue, a novel refilling technique was developed for the FSSW keyholes using a friction stir deposition (FSD) technique. The FSSW joints of AA6082-T6 sheets were welded at various rotation speeds from 400 to 1000 rpm and a constant dwell time of 3 s, where a 2 mm sheet thickness was an upper sheet, and a 1 mm sheet thickness was a lower sheet. All the keyhole refilling processes were achieved using a specially designed AA2011-T6 consumable rod to be used for friction stir deposition of continuous layers at a constant deposition parameter of 400 rpm consumable rod rotation speed and a 1 mm/min feed rate. The heat input energy for both the FSSW and refilled FSSW lap joints was calculated. In addition, the FSSW and the FSD temperatures were measured. Macrostructure, microstructure, and mechanical properties in terms of hardness and tensile shear maximum load were evaluated for both the friction stir spot welded (FSSWed) and the refilled FSSW lap joints. The obtained results showed that the keyhole could be successfully refilled with defect-free continuous multilayers after the refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW) process. All the RFSSW lap joints showed higher tensile shear loads than that given by the FSSW (before refill) lap joints. The RFSSW joint (welded at 600 rpm/3 s and refilled at 400 rpm/1 mm/min) showed a higher tensile shear load of 5400 N ± 100 compared with that recorded by the unrefilled joint (4300 N ± 80). The fracture location and fracture surface of the FSSW and RFSSW were examined and discussed.

Light-weight metal matrix composites, especially magnesium-based composites, have recently become more widespread for high-efficiency applications, including aerospace, automobile, defense, and telecommunication industries. The squeeze cast AZ91 base material (AZ91-BM) and its composites having 23 vol.% short carbon fibers were fabricated and investigated. The composite specimens were machined normal to the reinforced plane (Composite-N) and parallel to the reinforced plane (Composite-P). All the as-casted materials were subjected to different tests, such as hardness, compression, and wear testing, evaluating the mechanical properties. Dry wear tests were performed using a pin-on-disk machine at room temperature under different applied wear loads (1−5 N) and different sliding distances (0.4461×104−3.12×104 m). The microstructures and worn surfaces of the fabricated AZ91-BM and the two composite specimens were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) advanced analysis system. The wear debris was collected and investigated also under the SEM. The results showed significant improvement in hardness, compressive strength, and wear resistance of the composite specimens (Composite-N and Composite-P) over the AZ91-BM. The compressive strength and wear resistance are more fibers orientation sensitive than the hardness results. When the fiber orientation is parallel to the sliding direction (Composite-N), the weight loss is somewhat lower than that of the fiber orientation perpendicular to the sliding direction (Composite-P) at a constant wear load of 2 N and the sliding distances of 0.4461×104, 1.34×104 , and 2.23×104 m. In contrast, the weight loss of Composite-P is lower than Composite-N, especially at the highest sliding distance of 3.12×104 m due to the continuous feeding of graphite lubricant film and the higher compressive strength. Plastic deformation, oxidation, and abrasive wear are the dominant wear mechanisms of AZ91-BM; in contrast, abrasive and delamination wear are mainly the wear mechanisms of the two composites under the applied testing conditions.

In this study, AZ91/23 vol.% short carbon fiber composite was produced by a squeeze casting technique using a cylindrical pre-form of treated carbon fibers, in which the fibers are randomly oriented in the horizontal plane. Cylindrical specimens (height = 9 mm and diameter = 6 mm) were machined from the as-cast AZ91 matrix and its composite. The full behavior of the produced composite was studied through the test specimens machined in two directions, namely parallel to the reinforced plane (in the radial direction of the cast cylinder) and normal to the reinforced plane (in the axial direction of the cast composite). The microstructures of the produced composite specimens were investigated using SEM equipped with EDS analysis. Density, hardness, compressive, and wear behavior were also investigated. For comparison, the AZ91 matrix was evaluated as a reference. The microstructure of the produced AZ91 matrix alloy and its composite revealed dense materials without casting defects. Both composite specimens show improvement in hardness, compressive strength, and wear properties over the AZ91 matrix. The compressive and wear properties are more fiber orientation-dependent than the hardness results. The parallel composite specimen depicts the highest compressive properties in terms of yield compressive strength (311 MPa) and ultimate compressive strength (419 MPa), compared to that shown by the AZ91 matrix and the normal composite specimen. This improvement in compressive strength was at the expense of ductility. The parallel composite specimen shows the lowest ductility (R = 3.8%), compared to that given by the normal composite specimen (R = 7.1) and the AZ91 matrix alloy (R = 13.6). The wear testing results showed that at the highest wear load of 5 N, the material weight loss of the parallel composite specimen decreases by 44% and 64% compared to the AZ91 matrix and the normal composite specimen, respectively.

This study examined the protective effect of earthworm extract (EE) on acrylamide (ACR)-induced reproductive dysfunction. Forty male rats were allocated into four groups (n = 10). The G I (control) group received distilled water (D.W.). The G II group received ACR (5 mg kg -1 B.W. in D.W.) 5 days per week, orally, for 3 weeks. The G III group was administered EE (300 mg kg -1 B.W in D.W.) 5 days per week, orally, for 3 weeks. The G IV group was pretreated with EE for 3 weeks and then co-treated with EE and ACR for an additional 3 weeks. ACR decreased the number of sperm, sperm viability, and total motility. However, it increased testosterone levels with no effect on the FSH or LH levels. Moreover, ACR increased the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO). Meanwhile, it decreased the glutathione (GSH) concentration in testicular tissues. Notably, the expression levels of p53 and Ki-67 were increased in the degenerated spermatogenic cells and in the hyperplastic Leydig cells of the testis of the ACR-treated group, respectively. Acrylamide induced alterations in the testicular tissue architecture. Interestingly, EE restored the sperm parameters and recovered the testicular histological structures and the biochemical alterations induced by ACR. In conclusion, earthworm extract ameliorated ACR-induced reproductive toxicity via restoring the testicular antioxidant balance and suppressing p53 and Ki-67 expressions in testicular tissues.

AA1050 plates of 8 mm thickness were processed via bobbin-tool friction stir processing technique at a constant rotation speed of 600 rpm and different travel speeds ranging from 50 to 300 mm/min using three-pin geometries of triangle, square, and cylindrical. The temperatures of the processed zone, the advancing side, and the retreating side were measured; the machine torque during processing was also recorded. The processed materials were evaluated in terms of surface roughness, macrostructure, tensile properties, and hardness measurements. The fracture surfaces of the tensile fractured specimens were investigated using SEM. The results indicated that the pin geometry and processing speed significantly affect the generated heat input and the morphology of the processed zone. The peak temperature in the center of the processed zone decreases with increasing the travel speed from 50 to 300 mm/min at all applied pin geometries. The maximum temperature of ~400 °C was reached using the cylindrical pin geometry. The machine torque increases with increasing the travel speed at all applied pin geometries, and the highest torque value of 73 N.m is recorded using the square pin geometry at 300 mm/min travel speed. The top surface roughness of the processed area using the cylindrical pin is lower than that given by the other pin geometries. Under all applied conditions, the hardness of the processed area increases with increasing travel speed, and the cylindrical pin shows a higher hardness than the other pin geometries with 19% enhancement over the BM. The AA1050 processed using a cylindrical pin at 200 mm/min travel speed and a rotation speed of 600 rpm produces a sound processing zone with the highest ultimate tensile strength of 79 MPa.

Introduction: Adverse weather has a considerable negative impact on safety and mobility of transportation networks. Microsimulation models are one of the potential tools that could be used to evaluate the safety and operational impacts of adverse weather. The development of a realistic microsimulation model requires the adjustment of driving behavior parameters with disaggregate trajectory-level data. This study presented a novel approach to update and adjust lane change model parameters for the development of realistic microsimulation models in different weather conditions by leveraging the trajectory-level data from SHRP2 Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS)., Method: Representative key lane change parameters in various weather conditions were extracted from an automatic identification algorithm. These lane change parameters were used to develop microsimulation models in VISSIM in an attempt to assess the safety and operational impacts of adverse weather on a freeway weaving segment., Results: The evaluation of safety impacts of adverse weather with regard to three Surrogate Measures of Safety (SMoS) namely Time-to-Collision (TTC), Post Encroachment Time (PET), and Deceleration Rate to Avoid Collision (DRAC) suggested that extreme adverse weather (including heavy rain, heavy snow, and heavy fog) produced a higher total number of simulated conflicts compared to clear weather. The operational analysis results revealed that adjusted parameters in most of the adverse weather produced lower average speeds with higher total travel times and total delays than clear weather., Conclusions: The outcomes of safety and operational assessments for the adjusted parameters showed that the development of microsimulation models should be based on weather-specific, rather than default parameters., Practical Applications: The methodology presented in this study could be adopted by transportation agencies to develop weather-specific microsimulation models. The primary goal of this study was to conduct a preliminary assessment of maggot meal protein supplements in broiler production. Maggot meal comprises 55 percent crude protein (CP), 27.65% ether extract, 8.33% Ash, 3.37 crude fiber (CF), 2.14 NFE, 94.7 percent Dry Matter, 5702 kcal/kg gross energy, and 3955 kcal/kg metabolizing energy, according to proximate analysis. Maggot meal supplementation affected broiler meat feed intake, body weight gain, FCR, dressing %, mortality, antibody titer against ND, and organoleptic features. The cost-effectiveness of maggot supplementation was also evaluated. Birds were put into four experimental groups after a week of adaptation:Control group (M0), the first experimental group (M1), the second experimental group (M2), and the third experimental group (M3), which received supplements of 0, 2, 3, and 4 g/kg, respectively. A plane ratio was given to the control group as well. The overall feed intake findings were inversely proportional to the supplementation rate. Thus, the highly supplemented group (M3) showed the lowest feed intake than the control group (M0). Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is one of the important variants of the friction stir welding (FSW) process. FSSW has been developed mainly for automotive applications where the different thickness sheets spot welding is essential. In the present work, different thin thickness sheets (1 mm and 2 mm) of AA6082-T6 were welded using FSSW at a constant dwell time of 3 s and different rotation speeds of 400, 600, 800, and 1000 rpm. The FSSW heat input was calculated, and the temperature cycle experience during the FSSW process was recorded. Both starting materials and produced FSSW joints were investigated by macro- and microstructural investigation, a hardness test, and a tensile shear test, and the fractured surfaces were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The macro examination showed that defect-free spot joints were produced at a wide range of rotation speeds (400-1000 rpm). The microstructural results in terms of grain refining of the stir zone (SZ) of the joints show good support for the mechanical properties of FSSW joints. It was found that the best welding condition was 600 rpm for achieving different thin sheet thicknesses spot joints with the SZ hardness of 95 ± 2 HV0.5 and a tensile shear load of 4300 ± 30 N.

The current work investigates the viability of utilizing a friction stir deposition (FSD) technique to fabricate continuous multilayer high-performance, metal-based nanoceramic composites. For this purpose, AA2011/nano Al 2 O 3 composites were successfully produced using AA2011 as a matrix in two temper conditions (i.e., AA2011-T6 and AA2011-O). The deposition of matrices without nano Al 2 O 3 addition was also friction stir deposited for comparison purposes. The deposition process parameters were an 800 rpm rod rotation speed and a 5 mm/min feed rate. Relative density and mechanical properties (i.e., hardness, compressive strength, and wear resistance) were evaluated on the base materials, deposited matrices, and produced composites. The microstructural features of the base materials and the friction stir deposited materials were investigated using an optical microscope (OM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an EDS analysis system. The worn surface was also examined using SEM. The suggested technique with the applied parameters succeeded in producing defect-free deposited continuous multilayer AA2011-T6/nano Al 2 O 3 and AA2011-O/nano Al 2 O 3 composites, revealing well-bonded layers, grain refined microstructures, and homogeneously distributed Al 2 O 3 particles. The deposited composites showed higher hardness, compressive strengths, and wear resistance than the deposited AA2011 matrices at the two temper conditions. Using the AA2011-T6 temper condition as a matrix, the produced composite showed the highest wear resistance among all the deposited and base materials.

In the current work, mild steel used in shipbuilding applications was friction-stir-welded (FSWed) with the aim of investigating the microstructure and mechanical properties of the FSWed joints. Mild steel of 5 mm thickness was friction-stir-welded at a constant tool rotation rate of 500 rpm and two different welding speeds of 20 mm/min and 50 mm/min and 3° tool tilt angle. The microstructure of the joints was investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Additionally, the grain structure and crystallographic texture of the nugget (NG) zone of the FSWed joints was investigated using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). Furthermore, the mechanical properties were investigated using both tensile testing and hardness testing. The microstructure of the low-welding-speed joint was found to consist of fine-grain ferrite and bainite (acicular ferrite) with an average grain size of 3 µm, which indicates that the temperature experienced above A1, where a ferrite and austenite mixture is formed, and upon cooling, the austenite transformed into bainite. The joint produced using high welding speed resulted in a microstructure consisting mainly of polygonal ferrite and pearlite. This could be due to the temperature far below A1 experienced during FSW. In terms of joint efficiency expressed in terms of relative ultimate tensile, the stress of the joint to the base material was found to be around 92% for the low-speed joint and 83% for the high-welding-speed joint. A reduction in welding was attributed to the microstructure, as well as the microtunnel defect formed near the advancing side of the joint. The tensile strain was preserved at 18% for low welding speed and increased to 24% for the high welding speed. This can be attributed to the NG zone microstructural constituents. In terms of crystallographic texture, it is dominated by a simple shear texture, with increased intensity achieved by increasing the welding speed. In both joints, the hardness was found to be significantly increased in the NG zone of the joints, with a greater increase in the case of the low-welding-speed joint. This hardness increase is mainly attributed to the fine-grained structure formed after FSW.

This work aims to optimize the performance evaluation characteristics such as the temperature at the weld center of the lap joint (Tw), the tensile shear load (TSL), and the hardness using an experimental design experiment for bobbin tool friction stir welding (BT-FSW) of AA1050 lap joints. BT-FSW is characterized by a fully penetrated pin and double-sided shoulder that promote symmetrical solid-state welds. This study contributes to improving the quality of 10 mm thick lap joints and addressing challenges to obtaining a sound weld deprived of any defects. Taguchi L9 orthogonal array (OA) experimental design was performed. Three different pin shapes (cylindrical, triangular, and square) and three levels of welding travel speeds of 200, 400, and 600 mm/min were selected as input controllable process parameters at a constant tool rotation speed of 600 rpm. A travel speed of 200 mm/min with square pin geometry significantly improves the TSL of the joint up to 6491 N. However, the hardness characteristic is optimized by using 600 mm/min travel speed and a cylindrical tool pin. The minimum temperature in the weld joint can be obtained using 600 mm/min or more with triangular pin geometry. From ANOVA results, it was seen that the BT-FSW of AA 1050 thick lap joints performance in terms of TLS and Tw were greatly influenced by travel speed; however, the tool shape influences the hardness more. For the validation of the models, BT-FSW experiments have been carried out for AA1050 using the applied processing parameters. Furthermore, regression models were developed to predict the Tw, TSL, and hardness. The calculated performance properties from the mathematical models were in an acceptable range compared to the measured experimental values.

The present work analyzed the microstructure, mechanical, and corrosion properties of a dissimilar activated tungsten inert gas (ATIG) welded 2205 duplex stainless-steel (2205 DSS) plate and AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel (316L ASS) and compared them to conventional dissimilar welded tungsten inert gas (TIG). The mixing design method is a tool used to establish the optimal combined flux to achieve a full-penetrated weld bead in one single pass. A microstructure study was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ATIG and TIG fusion zones revealed a matrix ferrite structure with intragranular austenite, Widmanstätten needles, allotriomorphic austenite at the grain boundaries, and plate-like precipitates free of deleterious phases such as sigma and chi phases or second austinite owing to the moderate heat input provided of 0.8 kJ/mm. Ferrite volume proportion measurements were carried out utilizing the areas image processing software. The average ferrite volume proportion attained 54% in the ATIG weld zone; however, it decreased to 47% for the TIG weld zone. The results showed that the optimal flux composed by 91% Mn 2 O 3 and 9% Cr 2 O 3 allowed a full penetrated weld to be obtained in one single pass. However, a double side weld is required for conventional TIG processes. The values of the tensile (599 Mpa), hardness (235 HV), and impact test (267 J/cm 2 ) measurements of ATIG welds were close to those of conventional TIG welds. The elaborated flux did not degrade the mechanical properties of the joint; on the contrary, it reinforced the strength property. The width of the ATIG heat-affected zone was narrower than that of TIG welding by 2.6 times, ensuring fewer joint distortions. The potentiodynamic polarization test results showed a better electrochemical behavior for ASS 316L than with the weldment and the parent metal of DSS 2205.

The state of practice of investigating traffic safety and operation is primarily based on traditional data sources, such as spot sensors, loop detectors, and historical crash data. Recently, researchers have utilized transportation data from instrumented vehicles, driving simulators, and microsimulation modeling. However, these data sources might not represent the actual driving environment at a trajectory level and might introduce bias due to their experimental control. The shortcomings of these data sources can be overcome via Naturalistic Driving Studies (NDSs) considering the fact that NDS provides detailed real-time driving data that would help investigate the safety and operational impacts of human behavior along with other factors related to weather, traffic, and roadway geometry in a naturalistic setting. With the enormous potential of the NDS data, this study leveraged the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) approach to shortlist the most relevant naturalistic studies out of 2304 initial studies around the world with a focus on traffic safety and operation over the past fifteen years (2005-2020). A total of 117 studies were systematically reviewed, which were grouped into seven relevant topics, including driver behavior and performance, crash/near-crash causation, driver distraction, pedestrian/bicycle safety, intersection/traffic signal related studies, detection and prediction using NDSs data, based on their frequency of appearance in the keywords of these studies. The proper deployment of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) require an appropriate level of human behavior integration, especially at the intimal stages where both CAV and human-driven vehicles will interact and share the same roadways in a mixed traffic environment. In order to integrate the heterogeneous nature of human behavior through behavior cloning approach, real-time trajectory-level NDS data is essential. In the current study, a 2 mm thick low-carbon steel sheet (A283M-Grade C) was joined with a brass sheet (CuZn40) of 1 mm thickness using friction stir spot welding (FSSW). Different welding parameters including rotational speeds of 1000, 1250, and 1500 rpm, and dwell times of 5, 10, 20, and 30 s were applied to explore the effective range of parameters to have FSSW joints with high load-carrying capacity. The joint quality of the friction stir spot-welded (FSSWed) dissimilar materials was evaluated via visual examination, tensile lap shear test, hardness test, and macro- and microstructural investigation using SEM. Moreover, EDS analysis was applied to examine the mixing at the interfaces of the dissimilar materials. Heat input calculation for the FSSW of steel-brass was found to be linearly proportional with the number of revolutions per spot joint, with maximum heat input obtained of 11 kJ at the number of revolutions of 500. The temperature measurement during FSSW showed agreement with the heat input dependence on the number of revolution. However, at the same revolutions of 500, it was found that the higher rotation speed of 1500 rpm resulted in higher temperature of 583 °C compared to 535 °C at rotation speed of 1000 rpm. This implies the significant effect for the rotation speed in the increase of temperature. The macro investigations of the friction stir spot-welded joints transverse sections showed sound joints at the different investigated parameters with significant joint ligament between the steel and brass. FSSW of steel/brass joints with a number of revolutions ranging between 250 to 500 revolutions per spot at appropriate tool speed range (1000-1500 rpm) produces joints with high load-carrying capacity from 4 kN to 7.5 kN. The hardness showed an increase in the carbon steel (lower sheet) with maximum of 248 HV and an increase of brass hardness at mixed interface between brass and steel with significant reduction in the stir zone hardness. Microstructural investigation of the joint zone showed mechanical mixing between steel and brass with the steel extruded from the lower sheet into the upper brass sheet.
