This work describes the antimycotic activity of propolis from the stingless bees Scaptotrigona mexicana and Tetragonisca angustula , collected from two Mexican regions (Veracruz and Chiapas, respectively), against three clinical isolates and the reference strain ATCC 14522 of Malassezia pachydermatis , the causative agent of canine otitis. The chemical components of the ethanolic extracts of propolis were determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and sesquiterpenes were the predominant compounds. The antimycotic activity was evaluated by plate microdilution. The induced changes in the yeasts were evaluated by fluorescence microscopy and staining with calcofluor white and propidium iodide. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 7.11 mg/mL, and the minimum fungicidal concentration was 21.33 mg/mL for both extracts. The EPPs of Scaptotrigona mexicana and Tetragonisca angustula caused substantial damage to yeast morphology, where the propidium iodide staining of the yeasts treated with both EEPs revealed the penetration of this marker, which indicates the destruction of the cell wall and plasma membrane of the fungi. This result suggests that these types of propolis could be used as alternative treatments for canine external otitis. To the best of our knowledge, this seems to be the first scientific report that has demonstrated structural damage in Malassezia pachydermatis by Mexican stingless bee propolis.

Background: Sodium (Na) balance is unexplored in dialyzed children. We assessed a simplified sodium balance (sNaB) and its correlates in pediatric patients receiving maintenance dialysis., Methods: Patients < 18 years old on hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) in six European Pediatric Dialysis Working Group centers were recruited. sNaB was calculated from enteral Na, obtained by a 3-day diet diary, Na intake from medications, and 24-h urinary Na (uNa). Primary outcomes were systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure standard deviation scores (SBP and DBP SDS), obtained by 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring or office BP according to age, and interdialytic weight gain (IDWG)., Results: Forty-one patients (31 HD), with a median age of 13.3 (IQR 5.2) years, were enrolled. Twelve patients (29.3%) received Na-containing drugs, accounting for 0.6 (0.7) mEq/kg/day. Median total Na intake was 1.5 (1.1) mEq/kg/day, corresponding to 60.6% of the maximum recommended daily intake for healthy children. Median uNa and sNaB were 0.6 (1.8) mEq/kg/day and 0.9 (1.7) mEq/kg/day, respectively. The strongest independent predictor of sNaB in the cohort was urine output. In patients receiving HD, sNaB correlated with IDWG, pre-HD DBP, and first-hour refill index, a volume index based on blood volume monitoring. sNaB was the strongest predictor of IDWG in multiple regression analysis (β = 0.63; p = 0.005). Neither SBP SDS nor DBP SDS correlated with sNaB., Conclusions: Na intake is higher than uNa in children on dialysis, and medications may be an important source of Na. sNaB is best predicted by urine output in the population, and it is a significant independent predictor of IDWG in children on HD. Introduction: The surgical education has evolved by adopting the visual platforms as a resource of searching. The videos complement the visual learning of surgical techniques of trainees, residents, and surgeons. YouTube® is the most frequently consulted platform in the surgical field. WebSurg® and GIBLIB® are two recognized medical platforms. The Critical View of Safety (CVS) is the most important and effective method to reduce the risk of bile duct injury (BDI) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Reaching a satisfactory CVS is a crucial point. We evaluated the CVS of videos on WebSurg® and GIBLIB®, comparing the results with those of the worldwide most popular video platform., Methods: We performed a search under the term "Laparoscopic cholecystectomy" on the virtual platforms YouTube®, GIBLIB®, and WebSurg®. Three evaluators reviewed the 77 selected videos using the "Sanford-Strasberg' CVS score." The inferential analysis was performed between two groups: YouTube® and Non-YouTube (GIBLIB® and WebSurg®). The characteristics of each video were analyzed including country of origin, type of profile, number of views, and number of Likes., Results: Satisfactory CVS obtained from each of the platforms was GIBLIB® 40%; WebSurg® 44.4%; YouTube® 27.7%. The comparative analysis of CVS quality and CVS score for the Non-YouTube and YouTube® groups did not show a significant difference (p = 0.142, p = 0.377, respectively)., Conclusion: The videos on GIBLIB® and WebSurg® offer a higher probability of satisfactory CVS compared to YouTube®. Nevertheless, there is no significant superiority of GIBLIB® and WebSurg® over YouTube®., (© 2021. Background: Pediatric patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) are at risk of both malnutrition and fluid overload. This pilot study aimed to assess correlates of normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR) in adolescents on chronic HD, in particular fluid status markers., Methods: All patients aged 10-18 years on chronic HD in our center between 2017 and 2019 were enrolled. For each patient, mean nPCR was calculated and correlations with the following parameters investigated: dry body weight change in subsequent 3 months in kg (∆BW) and percentage of BW (∆BW%), change in body mass index (∆BMI), preHD systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), residual urine output, biochemistry, and blood volume monitoring-derived first hour refill index (RI), calculated as ratio between ultrafiltration rate and reduction in relative blood volume in first hour of dialysis., Results: Seventy-nine nPCR determinations were collected in 23 patients, median age 14.8 years. nPCR significantly correlated with ∆BW, ∆BW%, ∆BMI, spKT/V, and preHD serum creatinine, and negatively correlated with age, DBP SDS (r=-0.466, p=0.025) and RI (r=-0.435, p=0.043). RI was significantly higher in patients with nPCR <1 than those with nPCR above this threshold: 3.2 (1.9-4.7) vs. 1.4 (0.7-1.8) ml/kg/h/% (p=0.021). At multivariable analysis, nPCR remained positively correlated with creatinine and spKt/V, and inversely correlated with RI., Conclusions: nPCR is a significant predictor of weight change in adolescents on maintenance HD, and seems associated with creatinine and dialysis adequacy. Inverse correlation with RI suggests possible associations between malnutrition and fluid overload, but larger prospective studies are needed to confirm this. This article illustrates a data acquisition methodological process based on Structure from Motion (SfM) processing confronted with terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) and integrated into a Historic Building Information Model (HBIM) for architectural Heritage's management. This process was developed for the documentation of Cáceres' Almohad wall bordering areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The case study's aim was the analysis, management and control of a large urban area where the urban growth had absorbed the wall, making it physically inaccessible. The methodology applied was the combination of: clouds and meshes obtained by SfM; with images acquired from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Single Lens Reflex (SLR) and terrestrial photogrammetry; and finally, with clouds obtained by TLS. The outcome was a smart-high-quality three-dimensional study model of the inaccessible urban area. The final result was two-fold. On one side, there was a methodological result, a low cost and accurate smart work procedure to obtain a three-dimensional parametric HBIM model that integrates models obtained by remote sensing. On the other side, a patrimonial result involved the discovery of a XII century wall's section, that had supposedly been lost, that was hidden among the residential buildings. The article covers the survey campaign carried out by the research team and the techniques applied.

To determine the cerebral functionality associated with the perception and processing of erotic stimuli in men with different sexual orientation, this work evaluated the electroencephalographic activity (EEG) from several cortical areas, as well as subjective arousal in homosexual and heterosexual men during observation of an erotic film with heterosexual content. The heterosexual men rated the erotic video with higher general and sexual arousal than the homosexual participants. During observation of the neutral and erotic videos, both groups showed a decreased amplitude of the alpha band in prefrontal and parietal cortices, indicating increased attention. When watching the erotic video, the homosexual men showed an increased amplitude of the theta and fast bands only in the prefrontal cortex, which could be related to the cognitive processing of the erotic stimulus. These EEG results should broaden our knowledge of the cortical mechanisms related to the different perception and processing of erotic stimuli in men with different sexual orientations.

Members of the genus Naegleria are free-living amoebae that are widely distributed in water and soil environments. Moreover, Naegleria fowleri is a pathogenic amoeba species that causes a fatal disease in the central nervous system known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in humans. Since most reported infections due to N. fowleri are reported in recreational waters worldwide, this study was aimed to describe the presence of these amoebic genus in Mexicali Valley irrigation channels of recreational use. A total of nine water samples were collected and processed by triplicate, in nine different sites of the Valley. After filtering and culturing the samples, plates were examined, and the observed amoebae were morphologically identified at the genus level. In addition, the pathogenicity of these amoebic isolates was checked, and molecular characterization was performed by PCR/sequencing. The results revealed the presence of Naegleria spp. in all the channels sampled. Finally, molecular identification confirmed the presence of five different species of Naegleria: N. fowleri, N. australiensis, N. gruberi, N. clarki and N. pagei . The presence of these protists, particularly N. fowleri , should be considered as a potential human health risk in the region.

Background: Breast cancer is a complex multifactorial genetic disease. Among other factors, race and, to an even greater extent, viruses are known to influence the development of this heterogeneous disease. It has been reported that MMTV-like (HMTV) gene sequences with a 90 to 98% homology to mouse mammary tumor virus are found in several populations with a prevalence range of 0 to 74%. In the Mexican population, 4.2% of patients with breast cancer exhibit the presence of HMTV (MMTV-like) sequences. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence and current prevalence of retroviral HMTV (MMTV-like) sequences in breast cancer in Mexican women., Methods: We used nested PCR and real-time PCR with a TaqMan probe. As a positive control, we used the C3H MMTV strain inserted into pBR322 plasmid. To confirm that we had identified the HMTV sequences, we sequenced the amplicons and compared these sequences with those of MMTV and HMTV (GenBank AF033807 and AF346816)., Results: A total of 12.4% of breast tumors were HMTV-positive, and 15.7% of the unaffected tissue samples from 458 patients were HMTV-positive. A total of 8.3% of the patients had both HMTV-positive tumor and adjacent tissues. The HMTV-positive samples presented 98% similarity to the reported HMTV sequence., Conclusions: These results confirm that the HMTV sequence is present in breast tumors and non-affected tissues in the Mexican population. HMTV should be considered a prominent causative agent of breast cancer.

Background: Allergen exposure leads to allergen sensitization in susceptible individuals and this might influence allergic rhinitis (AR) phenotype expression. We investigated whether sensitization patterns vary in a country with subtropical and tropical regions and if sensitization patterns relate to AR phenotypes or age., Methods: In a national, cross-sectional study AR patients (2-70 y) seen by allergists underwent blinded skin prick testing with a panel of 18 allergens and completed a validated questionnaire on AR phenotypes., Results: 628 patients were recruited. The major sensitizing allergen was house dust mite (HDM) (56%), followed by Bermuda grass (26%), ash (24%), oak (23%) and mesquite (21%) pollen, cat (22%) and cockroach (21%). Patients living in the tropical region were almost exclusively sensitized to HDM (87%). In the central agricultural zones sensitization is primarily to grass and tree pollen. Nationwide, most study subjects had perennial (82.2%), intermittent (56.5%) and moderate-severe (84.7%) AR. Sensitization was not related to the intermittent-persistent AR classification or to AR severity; seasonal AR was associated with tree (p < 0.05) and grass pollen sensitization (p < 0.01). HDM sensitization was more frequent in children (0-11 y) and adolescents (12-17 y) (subtropical region: p < 0.0005; tropical region p < 0.05), but pollen sensitization becomes more important in the adult patients visiting allergists (Adults vs children + adolescents for tree pollen: p < 0.0001, weeds: p < 0.0005)., Conclusions: In a country with (sub)tropical climate zones SPT sensitization patterns varied according to climatological zones; they were different from those found in Europe, HDM sensitization far outweighing pollen allergies and Bermuda grass and Ash pollen being the main grass and tree allergens, respectively. Pollen sensitization was related to SAR, but no relation between sensitization and intermittent-persistent AR or AR severity could be detected. Sensitization patterns vary with age (child HDM, adult pollen). Clinical implications of our findings are dual: only a few allergens -some region specific- cover the majority of sensitizations in (sub)tropical climate zones. This is of major importance for allergen manufacturers and immunotherapy planning. Secondly, patient selection in clinical trials should be based on the intermittent-persistent and severity classifications, rather than on the seasonal-perennial AR subtypes, especially when conducted in (sub)tropical countries.

Purpose: In order to explore the possible inhibitory role of the phasic phenomena of REM sleep ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves over epilepsy, seizure activity produced by topic administration of Na-penicillin (PCN) has been analyzed during sustained PGO waves irrespective of current state. PGO waves were induced by the injection of carbachol in the peribrachial area., Methods: The development of acute experimental epilepsy was compared among nine chronically implanted, adult, male cats, by means of polygraphic 23 h recordings. Our protocol consisted of sets of 4 trials: carbachol; PCN; carbachol followed by PCN and finally PCN followed by carbachol. Each cat received one single set and all trials were carried out with a seven days interval, in order to compare the epileptic activity both in the presence of PGOs and without them., Results: PGO waves 1) exert an inhibitory influence over number and duration of the Generalized Convulsive Seizures (GCSs) and 2) spike frequency; 3) increase the latency of GCSs; and 4) restores sleep alterations produced by experimental epilepsy., Conclusions: PGO waves exhibit an inhibitory influence over seizures induced by PCN. These data support the hypothesis that this phasic phenomenon of REM sleep have a depressant effect on epilepsy, inhibit seizures and normalize sleep architecture changes induced by seizures. We suggest that one possible function of PGO activity is to protect the brain from intense changes in neuronal excitability; namely convulsive activity.

Dynamic neural networks with different time-scales include the aspects of fast and slow phenomenons. Some applications require that the equilibrium points of these networks to be stable. The main contribution of the paper is that Lyapunov function and singularly perturbed technique are combined to access several new stable properties of different time-scales neural networks. Exponential stability and asymptotic stability are obtained by sector and bound conditions. Compared to other papers, these conditions are simpler. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Knotting Swan-Ganz catheter is a rare complication of hemodynamic monitoring. This is the second case reported in Mexico in over 20 years. Identified risk factors that increase likelihood of loop formation knotting of the catheter are blind introduction and small diameter of catheter, incomplete balloon inflation before advancing it, several tries to wedge it, bending of the catheter by heat, and enlarged right heart chambers. More frequent sites of knotting are right atrium and ventricle, subclavian vein, and pulmonary artery and its branches. Diagnostic confirmation is made by chest radiography, fluoroscopy, and echocardiography. Therapeutic approach depends on knot characteristics, either non-surgical or surgical.
