Visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidation by photogenerated holes has immense potential for environmental remediation applications. While the electron-mediated photoreduction reactions are often at the spotlight, active holes possess a remarkable oxidation capacity that can degrade recalcitrant organic pollutants, resulting in nontoxic byproducts. However, the random charge transfer and rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs hinder the accumulation of long-lived holes at the reaction center. Herein, a novel method employing defect-engineered indium (In) single-atom photocatalysts with nitrogen vacancy (Nv) defects, dispersed in carbon nitride foam (In-Nv-CNF), is reported to overcome these challenges and make further advances in photocatalysis. This Nv defect-engineered strategy produces a remarkable extension in the lifetime and an increase in the concentration of photogenerated holes in In-Nv-CNF. Consequently, the optimized In-Nv-CNF demonstrates a remarkable 50-fold increase in photo-oxidative degradation rate compared to pristine CN, effectively breaking down two widely used antibiotics (tetracycline and ciprofloxacin) under visible light. The contaminated water treated by In-Nv-CNF is completely nontoxic based on the growth of Escherichia coli. Structural-performance correlations between defect engineering and long-lived hole accumulation in In-Nv-CNF are established and validated through experimental and theoretical agreement. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used as power storage systems in electronic devices and electric vehicles (EVs). Recycling of spent LIBs is of utmost importance from various perspectives including recovery of valuable metals (mostly Co and Li) and mitigation of environmental pollution. Recycling methods such as direct recycling, pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, bio-hydrometallurgy (bioleaching) and electrometallurgy are generally used to resynthesise LIBs. These methods have their own benefits and drawbacks. This manuscript provides a critical review of recent advances in the recycling of spent LIBs, including the development of recycling processes, identification of the products obtained from recycling, and the effects of recycling methods on environmental burdens. Insights into chemical reactions, thermodynamics, kinetics, and the influence of operating parameters of each recycling technology are provided. The sustainability of recycling technologies ( e.g. , life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis) is critically evaluated. Finally, the existing challenges and future prospects are presented for further development of sustainable, highly efficient, and environmentally benign recycling of spent LIBs to contribute to the circular economy.

This investigation aims to assess the levels of human exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) in various locations of a natural stone quarry for the first time based on simultaneous measurements of both PM mass and number concentrations (PMC and PNC). A quarry located in Danang city, Vietnam, considered to be a "hotspot" of air pollution in the city, was selected for detailed investigations. Both PMC and PNC were found to be significantly higher (1.2-6.0 times) within the quarry compared to surrounding areas. Mechanical activities during mining, notably crushing, screening, hauling, and loading stones, contributed to increased emissions of PM in the coarser mode (1-10 μm) compared to the accumulation mode (0.1-1 μm) and thus increased deposition of PM 1-10 in the human upper respiratory tract. In contrast, combustion activities, especially the diesel engine exhaust from various machines and vehicles used in the quarry, resulted in increased emissions of small particles in the accumulation mode that dominated the PNC and in their deposition in the lower respiratory tract. Simultaneous measurements of PNC and PMC revealed that the PM counts were strongly associated with PM deposition in the alveolar region (accounting for ≈ 76% of total PNC of particles less than 10 μm, N 10 ), while the PM mass concentration was a better indicator of the deposition of PM in the head airway region (≈92% of total PMC of PM 10 ). Overall, this study demonstrates the significance of measuring both PNC and PMC to assess PM exposure levels, regional respiratory doses, and potential health effects associated with human exposure to PM generated from stone quarrying activities. Global ground-level measurements of elements in ambient particulate matter (PM) can provide valuable information to understand the distribution of dust and trace elements, assess health impacts, and investigate emission sources. We use X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the elemental composition of PM samples collected from 27 globally distributed sites in the Surface PARTiculate mAtter Network (SPARTAN) over 2019-2023. Consistent protocols are applied to collect all samples and analyze them at one central laboratory, which facilitates comparison across different sites. Multiple quality assurance measures are performed, including applying reference materials that resemble typical PM samples, acceptance testing, and routine quality control. Method detection limits and uncertainties are estimated. Concentrations of dust and trace element oxides (TEO) are determined from the elemental dataset. In addition to sites in arid regions, a moderately high mean dust concentration (6 μg/m 3 ) in PM 2.5 is also found in Dhaka (Bangladesh) along with a high average TEO level (6 μg/m 3 ). High carcinogenic risk (>1 cancer case per 100000 adults) from airborne arsenic is observed in Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kanpur (India), and Hanoi (Vietnam). The direct impacts of climate change involve a multitude of phenomena, including rising sea levels, intensified severe weather events such as droughts and flooding, increased temperatures leading to wildfires, and unpredictable fluctuations in rainfall. This comprehensive review intends to examine firstly the probable consequences of climate change on extreme weather events such as drought, flood and wildfire. This review subsequently examines the release and transformation of contaminants in terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments in response to extreme weather events driven by climate change. While drought and flood influence the dynamics of inorganic and organic contaminants in terrestrial and aquatic environments, thereby influencing their mobility and transport, wildfire results in the release and spread of organic contaminants in the atmosphere. There is a nascent awareness of climate change's influence of climate change-induced extreme weather events on the dynamics of environmental contaminants in the scientific community and decision-making processes. The remediation industry, in particular, lags behind in adopting adaptive measures for managing contaminated environments affected by climate change-induced extreme weather events. However, recognizing the need for assessment measures represents a pivotal first step towards fostering more adaptive practices in the management of contaminated environments. Biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) are considered to be environmentally friendly compared to non-biodegradable plastics (NMPs). However, BMPs are likely to become toxic during their transport because of the adsorption of pollutants (e.g., heavy metals) onto them. This study investigated the uptake of six heavy metals (Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cr 3+ , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Zn 2+ ) by a common BMPs (polylactic acid (PLA)) and compared their adsorption characteristics to those of three types of NMPs (polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) for the first time. The order of heavy metal adsorption capacity among the four MPs was PE > PLA > PVC > PP. The findings suggest that BMPs contained more toxic heavy metals than some NMPs. Among the six heavy metals, Cr 3+ showed considerably stronger adsorption than other heavy metals in both BMPS and NMPs. The adsorption of heavy metals on MPs can be well explained using the Langmuir isotherm model, while the adsorption kinetic curves showed the best fit to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Desorption experiments revealed that BMPs released a higher percentage of heavy metals (54.6-62.6%) in the acidic environment in a shorter time (~ 6 h) compared to NMPs. In this study, activated hydrochar was prepared from orange peel (OP) waste using KOH for the first time for potential environmental applications. The influence of hydrothermal carbonization temperature (180 °C, 200 °C, and 220 °C) on the CO 2 adsorption capacity of OP-derived activated hydrochar (OP-180, OP-200, and OP-220) was investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed that the activated OP hydrochar has high microporosity, a desired attribute for effective adsorption. The yield and the oxygen content of the hydrochar decreased with the increasing process temperature whereas the carbon content showed an increase. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence of various functional groups including ketone, aldehydes, esters, and carboxyl in the hydrochar. CO 2 adsorption isotherm was determined for all hydrochar samples. At 25 °C and 1 bar, OP-220 showed the highest CO 2 uptake at 3.045 mmol/g. Hydrothermal process is an emerging technology that contributes to sustainable production of biomass-derived chemicals, fuels, and materials. This technology uses hot compressed water to convert various biomass feedstocks including recalcitrant organic compounds in biowastes into desired solid, liquid, and gaseous products. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the hydrothermal conversion of lignocellulosic as well as nonlignocellulosic biomass to value-added products and bioenergy to fulfill the principles of circular economy. However, it is important to assess hydrothermal processes in terms of their capabilities and limitations from different sustainability aspects so that further advances can be made toward improvement of their technical maturity and commercialization potential. The key aims of this comprehensive review are to (a) explain the inherent properties of biomass feedstocks and physio-chemical characteristics of their bioproducts, (b) elucidate related transformation pathways, (c) clarify the role of hydrothermal process for biomass conversion, (d) evaluate the capability of hydrothermal treatment coupled with other technologies for producing novel chemicals, fuels and materials, (e) explore different sustainability assessments of hydrothermal processes for potential large-scale applications, and (f) offer our perspectives to facilitate the transition from a primarily petro-based to an alternative biobased society in the context of changing climate.

Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are increasingly generated due to their widespread use for various energy-related applications. Spent LIBs contain several valuable metals including cobalt (Co) and lithium (Li) whose supply cannot be sustained in the long-term in view of their increased demand. To avoid environmental pollution and recover valuable metals, recycling of spent LIBs is widely explored using different methods. Bioleaching (biohydrometallurgy), an environmentally benign process, is receiving increased attention in recent years since it utilizes suitable microorganisms for selective leaching of Co and Li from spent LIBs and is cost-effective. A comprehensive and critical analysis of recent studies on the performance of various microbial agents for the extraction of Co and Li from the solid matrix of spent LIBs would help for development of novel and practical strategies for effective extraction of precious metals from spent LIBs. Specifically, this review focuses on the current advancements in the application of microbial agents namely bacteria (e.g., Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans ) and fungi (e.g., Aspergillus niger ) for the recovery of Co and Li from spent LIBs. Both bacterial and fungal leaching are effective for metal dissolution from spent LIBs. Among the two valuable metals, the dissolution rate of Li is higher than Co. The key metabolites which drive the bacterial leaching include sulfuric acid, while citric acid, gluconic acid and oxalic acid are the dominant metabolites in fungal leaching. The bioleaching performance depends on both biotic (microbial agents) and abiotic factors (pH, pulp density, dissolved oxygen level and temperature). The major biochemical mechanisms which contribute to metal dissolution include acidolysis, redoxolysis and complexolysis. In most cases, the shrinking core model is suitable to describe the bioleaching kinetics. Biological-based methods (e.g., bioprecipitation) can be applied for metal recovery from the bioleaching solution. There are several potential operational challenges and knowledge gaps which should be addressed in future studies to scale-up the bioleaching process. Silver (Ag), a naturally occurring, rare and precious metal, is found in major minerals such as cerargyrite (AgCl), pyrargyrite (Ag 3 SbS 3 ), proustite (Ag 3 AsS 3 ), and stephanite (Ag 5 SbS 4 ). From these minerals, Ag is released into soil and water through the weathering of rocks and mining activities. Silver also enters the environment by manufacturing and using Ag compounds in electroplating and photography, catalysts, medical devices, and batteries. With >400 t of Ag NPs produced yearly, Ag NPs have become a rapidly growing source of anthropogenic Ag input in the environment. In soils and natural waters, most Ag is sorbed to soil particles and sediments and precipitated as oxides, carbonates, sulphides, chlorides and hydroxides. Silver and its compounds are toxic, and humans and other animals are exposed to Ag through inhalation of air and the consumption of Ag-contaminated food and drinking water. Remediation of Ag-contaminated soil and water sources can be achieved through immobilization and mobilization processes. Immobilization of Ag in soil and groundwater reduces the bioavailability and mobility of Ag, while mobilization of Ag in the soil can facilitate its removal. This review provides an overview of the current understanding of the sources, geochemistry, health hazards, remediation practices and regulatory mandates of Ag contamination in complex environmental settings, including soil and aquatic ecosystems. Excess nitrogen in stormwater degrades surface water quality via eutrophication and related processes. Bioretention has been recognized as a highly effective low-impact development (LID) technology for the management of high runoff volumes and reduction of nitrogen (N) pollutants through various mechanisms. This paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of recent developments on the biological N removal processes occurring in bioretention systems. The key plant- and microbe-mediated N transformation processes include assimilation (N uptake by plants and microbes), nitrification, denitrification, and anammox (anaerobic ammonia oxidation), but denitrification is the major pathway of permanent N removal. Overall, both laboratory- and field-scale bioretention systems have demonstrated promising N removal performance (TN: >70%). The phyla Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria are the most abundant microbial communities found to be enriched in biofilter media. Furthermore, the denitrifying communities contain several functional genes (e.g., nirK / nirS , and nosZ ), and their concentrations increase near the surface of media depth. The N removal effectiveness of bioretention systems is largely impacted by the hydraulics and environmental factors. When a bioretention system operates at: low hydraulic/N loading rate, containing a saturation zone, vegetated with native plants, having deeper and multilayer biofilter media with warm climate temperature and wet storm events periods, the N removal efficiency can be high. This review highlights shortcomings and current knowledge gaps in the area of total nitrogen removal using bioretention systems, as well as identifies future research directions on this topic.

Adsorption is the most widely adopted, effective, and reliable treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. One of the major issues with the adsorption-treatment process for the removal of contaminants from wastewater streams is the recovery and sustainable management of spent adsorbents. This review focuses on the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and how the spent adsorbents could be recovered, regenerated, and further managed through reuse or safe disposal. The critical analysis of both conventional and emerging adsorbents on organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater systems are evaluated. The various recovery and regeneration techniques of spent adsorbents including magnetic separation, filtration, thermal desorption and decomposition, chemical desorption, supercritical fluid desorption, advanced oxidation process and microbial assisted adsorbent regeneration are discussed in detail. The current challenges for the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents and the methodologies used for solving those problems are covered. The spent adsorbents are managed through regeneration for reuse (such as soil amendment, capacitor, catalyst/catalyst support) or safe disposal involving incineration and landfilling. Sustainable management of spent adsorbents, including processes involved in the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents for reuse, is examined in the context of resource recovery and circular economy. Biochar has been increasingly used as a filter medium in engineered low impact development systems (e.g., bioretention systems) for decontamination of urban stormwater and management of hydrology. This review paper critically analyzes the performance of biochar-based biofiltration systems for removal of chemical and microbial pollutants present in urban runoff. Biochar-amended biofiltration systems efficiently remove diverse pollutants such as total nitrogen (32 - 61%), total phosphorus: (45 - 94%), heavy metals (27 - 100%), organics (54 - 100%) and microbial pollutants (log 10 removal: 0.78 - 4.23) from urban runoff. The variation of biofiltration performance is due to changes in biochar characteristics, the abundance of dissolved organic matter and/or stormwater chemistry. The dominant mechanisms responsible for removal of chemical pollutants are sorption, ion exchange and/or biotransformation, whereas filtration/straining is the major mechanism for bacteria removal. The pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm are the best models that describe the kinetics and chemical equilibrium of pollutants, respectively. This critical review provides the fundamental scientific knowledge for designing highly efficient biochar-based bioretention systems for removal of diverse pollutants from urban stormwater. In response to the rapid spread of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) within and across countries and the need to protect public health, governments worldwide introduced unprecedented measures such as restricted road and air travel and reduced human mobility in 2020. The curtailment of personal travel and economic activity provided a unique opportunity for researchers to assess the interplay between anthropogenic emissions of primary air pollutants, their physical transport, chemical transformation, ultimate fate and potential health impacts. In general, reductions in the atmospheric levels of outdoor air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were observed in many countries during the lockdowns. However, the levels of ozone (O 3 ), a secondary air pollutant linked to asthma and respiratory ailments, and secondary PM were frequently reported to remain unchanged or even increase. An increase in O 3 can enhance the formation of secondary PM 2.5 , especially secondary organic aerosols, through the atmospheric oxidation of VOCs. Given that the gaseous precursors of O 3 (VOCs and NO x ) are also involved in the formation of secondary PM 2.5, an integrated control strategy should focus on reducing the emission of the common precursors for the co-mitigation of PM 2.5 and O 3 with an emphasis on their complex photochemical interactions. Compared to outdoor air quality, comprehensive investigations of indoor air quality (IAQ) are relatively sparse. People spend more than 80% of their time indoors with exposure to air pollutants of both outdoor and indoor origins. Consequently, an integrated assessment of exposure to air pollutants in both outdoor and indoor microenvironments is needed for effective urban air quality management and for mitigation of health risk. To provide further insights into air quality, we do a critical review of scientific articles, published from January 2020 to December 2020 across the globe. Cenospheres (CS) are spherical shaped inorganic frameworks present in with fly ash which is generated from coal-fired thermal power plants. These spherical structures were functionalized with imidazole and amine moieties to capture CO 2 selectively from flue gases at elevated temperature. The functionalized CS have shown a high selectivity for CO 2 adsorption (4.68 mmol g -1 ) over N 2 (0.46 mmol g -1 ) at 333 K/1 bar from a simulated flue gas (0.15 CO 2 and 0.85 N 2 , v%) composition of thermal power plants. When the moisture content reached to 30 vol% the adsorption capacity of CS materials was reduced to 20 vol% as compared to dry flue gas. The functionalized CS can be used repeatedly for 50 cycles without losing its adsorption capacity. The cost estimate for CO 2 capture by using the proposed adsorption system would be $12.01/ton of CO 2 which is lower as compared to amine absorption system and zeolite-based adsorption system reported in the literature. Black carbon (BC), an important indicator of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) in urban environments, is receiving increased attention because of its adverse health effects. Personal exposure (PE) of adults to BC has been widely studied, but little is known about the exposure of young children (toddlers) to BC in cities. We carried out a pilot study to investigate the integrated daily PE of toddlers to BC in a city-state with a high population density (Singapore). We studied the impact of urban traffic on the PE of toddlers to BC by comparing and contrasting on-road traffic flow (i.e., volume and composition) in Singapore in 2019 (before the COVID-19 pandemic) and in 2020 (during the COVID-19 pandemic). Our observations indicate that the daily BC exposure levels and inhaled doses increased by about 25% in 2020 (2.9 ± 0.3 μg m -3 and 35.5 μg day -1 ) compared to that in 2019 (2.3 ± 0.4 μg m -3 and 28.5 μg day -1 for exposure concentration and inhaled dose, respectively). The increased BC levels were associated with the increased traffic volume on both weekdays and weekends in 2020 compared to the same time period in 2019. Specifically, we observed an increase in the number of trucks as well as cars/taxis and motorcycles (private transport) and a decline in the number of buses (public transport) in 2020. The implementation of lockdown measures in 2020 resulted in significant changes in the time, place and duration of PE of toddlers to BC. The recorded daily time-activity patterns indicated that toddlers spent almost all the time in indoor environments during the measurement period in 2020. When we compared different ventilation options (natural ventilation (NV), air conditioning (AC), and portable air cleaner (PAC)) for mitigation of PE to BC in the home environment, we found a significant decrease (>30%) in daily BC exposure levels while using the PAC compared to the NV scenario. Our case study shows that the PE of toddlers to BC is of health concern in indoor environments in 2020 because of the migration of the increased TRAP into naturally ventilated residential homes and more time spent indoors than outdoors. We developed biochar by pyrolysis of pinewood wastes at different temperatures and investigated its potential to nitrate and phosphate from single and binary solutions. An in-depth characterization of biochar was carried out to study its physical, surface morphological and chemical characteristics using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The impact of pyrolysis temperatures (300-600 °C) on the biochar yield, the biochar's elemental composition, and its adsorption characteristics was examined. Biochar produced at 600 °C showed a maximum uptake for both nitrate and phosphate due to its high C content (63.8%), pore volume (0.201 cm 3 /g), surface area (204.2 m 2 /g) and reduced acidic binding groups. The influence of pH, initial solute concentrations, contact time on the removal of a single solute at a time by biochar was examined. Results revealed that pinewood-derived biochar had its maximum performance at pH 2, with predicted equilibrium uptakes of 20.5 and 4.20 mg/g for phosphate and nitrate, respectively at initial solute concentrations of 60 mg/L within 360 min. The single solute isotherm was studied using the Freundlich, Langmuir and Toth models, and kinetics was described using the pseudo-first and -second order models. While using dual-solutes, biochar showed preference towards phosphate as confirmed by high affinity factor. The dual-solute kinetic experiments showed that around 95% of phosphate was removed within 45 min, whereas it took 240 min to achieve 95% total nitrate removal from the mixture. Bioretention is a popular stormwater management strategy that is often utilized in urban environments to combat water quality and hydrological impacts of stormwater. This goal is achieved by selective designing of a system, which consists of suitable vegetation at the top planted on an engineered media with drainage system and possible underdrain at the bottom. Bibliometric analysis on bioretention studies indicates that most of the original research contributions are derived from a few countries and selected research groups. Hence, most of the bioretention systems installed in diverse geographical locations are based on guidelines from climatically different countries, which often lead to operational failures. The current review critically analyzes recent research findings from the bioretention literature, provides the authors' perspectives on the current state of knowledge, highlights the key knowledge gaps in bioretention research, and points out future research directions to make further advances in the field. Specifically, the role and desired features of bioretention components, the importance of fundamental investigations in laboratory, field-based studies and modeling efforts, the real-time process control of bioretention cells, bioretention system design considerations, and life cycle assessment of full-scale bioretention systems are discussed. The importance of local conditions in guiding bioretention designs in difference climates is emphasized. At the end of the review, current technical challenges are identified and recommendations to overcome them are provided. Urban passenger land transport is an important source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally, but it is challenging to mitigate these emissions as this sector interacts with many other economic sectors. We develop the Climate change constrained Urban passenger Transport Integrated Life cycle assessment (CURTAIL) model to outline mitigation pathways of urban passenger land transport that are consistent with ambitious climate targets. CURTAIL uses the transport activity of exogenously defined modal shares to simulate the associated annual vehicle stocks, sales, and life cycle GHG emissions. It estimates GHG emission budgets that are consistent with global warming below 2 and 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels and seeks mitigation strategies to remain within the budgets. We apply it to a case study of Singapore, a city-state. Meeting a 1.5 °C target requires strong commitments in the transport and electricity sectors, such as reducing the motorized passenger activity, accelerating the deployment of public transit and of electrification, and decarbonizing the power generation system. Focusing on one mitigation technology or one mode of transport alone will not be sufficient to meet the target. Our novel model could be applied to any city to provide insights relevant to the design of urban climate change mitigation targets and policies.

The combustion of fossil fuels is a significant source of particulate-bound black carbon (BC) in urban environments. The personal exposure (PE) of urban dwellers to BC and subsequent health impacts remain poorly understood due to a lack of observational data. In this study, we assessed and quantified the levels of PE to BC under two exposure scenarios (home-based and mobility-based exposure) in the city of Trivandrum in India. In the home-based scenario, the PE to BC was assessed in a naturally ventilated building over 24 h each day during the study period while in the mobility-based scenario, the PE to BC was monitored across diverse microenvironments (MEs) during the day using the same study protocol for consistency. Elevated BC concentrations were observed during the transport by motorcycle (26.23 ± 2.33 µg/m 3 ) and car (17.49 ± 2.37 µg/m 3 ). The BC concentrations observed in the MEs decreased in the following order: 16.58 ± 1.38 µg/m 3 (temple), 13.78 ± 2.07 µg/m 3 (restaurant), 11.44 ± 1.37 µg/m 3 (bus stop), and 8.27 ± 1.88 µg/m 3 (home); the standard deviations represent the temporal and spatial variations of BC concentrations. Overall, a relatively larger inhaled dose of BC in the range of 148.98-163.87 µg/day was observed for the mobility-based scenario compared to the home-based one (118.10-137.03 µg/day). This work highlights the importance of reducing PE to fossil fuel-related particulate emissions in cities for which BC is a good indicator. The study outcome could be used to formulate effective strategies to improve the urban air quality as well as public health.

Smoke haze episodes, resulting from uncontrolled biomass burning (BB) including forest and peat fires, continue to occur in Southeast Asia (SEA), affecting air quality, atmospheric visibility, climate, ecosystems, hydrologic cycle and human health. The pollutant of major concern in smoke haze is airborne particulate matter (PM). A number of fundamental laboratory, field and modeling studies have been conducted in SEA from 2010 to 2020 to investigate potential environmental and health impacts of BB-induced PM. The goal of this review is to bring together the most recent developments in our understanding of various aspects of BB-derived PM based on 127 research articles published from 2010 to 2020, which have not been conveyed in previous reviews. Specifically, this paper discusses the physical, chemical, toxicological and radiative properties of BB-derived PM. It also provides insights into the environmental and health impacts of BB-derived PM, summarizes the approaches taken to do the source apportionment of PM during BB events and discusses the mitigation of exposure to BB-derived PM. During the 2019 smoke haze episode in Singapore, elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) were observed, deteriorating both ambient and indoor air quality (IAQ). We investigated the mitigation of indoor human exposure to PM 2.5 of outdoor origin under diverse exposure scenarios with and without filtration of PM 2.5 during both hazy and non-hazy days. The key objective of our study was to make a comparative evaluation of the effectiveness of portable air cleaners (PACs) and air conditioning (AC) systems equipped with particle filters in improving IAQ and to assess related long-term carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks. We conducted real-time measurements of PM 2.5 , black carbon mass concentrations and particle number concentrations in both indoor and outdoor areas, quantified the relative concentrations of the water-soluble fraction of toxic trace elements in PM 2.5 for health risk assessment, and estimated the levels of thermal comfort. In addition, we calculated the total estimated cost of indoor air pollution control. Our findings suggest that indoor air cleaners are more effective at mitigating human exposure to airborne particles and reducing health risk with less consumption of electricity and better cost-effectiveness compared to AC. Globally consistent measurements of airborne metal concentrations in fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) are important for understanding potential health impacts, prioritizing air pollution mitigation strategies, and enabling global chemical transport model development. PM 2.5 filter samples (N ~ 800 from 19 locations) collected from a globally distributed surface particulate matter sampling network (SPARTAN) between January 2013 and April 2019 were analyzed for particulate mass and trace metals content. Metal concentrations exhibited pronounced spatial variation, primarily driven by anthropogenic activities. PM 2.5 levels of lead, arsenic, chromium, and zinc were significantly enriched at some locations by factors of 100-3000 compared to crustal concentrations. Levels of metals in PM 2.5 and PM 10 exceeded health guidelines at multiple sites. For example, Dhaka and Kanpur sites exceeded the US National Ambient Air 3-month Quality Standard for lead (150 ng m -3 ). Kanpur, Hanoi, Beijing and Dhaka sites had annual mean arsenic concentrations that approached or exceeded the World Health Organization's risk level for arsenic (6.6 ng m -3 ). The high concentrations of several potentially harmful metals in densely populated cites worldwide motivates expanded measurements and analyses.

Gas cooking is an important source of airborne particulate matter (PM) indoors. Exposure to cooking-derived PM can lead to adverse human health impacts on non-smokers, especially in poorly-ventilated residential homes. Most of the previous studies on gas cooking emissions mainly focused on fine particles (PM 2.5 ) with little information on their size-fractionation. Moreover, studies dealing with mitigation of indoor human exposure to cooking-derived PM are currently sparse. Therefore, a systematic study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of PM 2.5 and size-fractionated PM derived from five commonly used cooking methods, namely, steaming, boiling, stir-frying, pan-frying and deep-frying in a poorly-ventilated domestic kitchen under controlled experimental conditions. Additionally, an indoor portable air cleaner was employed as a mitigation device to capture cooking-derived PM and improve indoor air quality (IAQ). Results revealed that the oil-based deep-frying cooking released the highest airborne particles which were about 170 folds higher compared to the baseline levels for PM 2.5 mass concentrations. The use of the air cleaner showed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the indoor PM 2.5 levels. Moreover, PM <0.25 (particles with diameter ≤ 250 nm) showed a very high mass concentration (378.2 μg/m 3 ) during deep-frying, raising human health concern. A substantial reduction (~60-85%) in PM <0.25 mass concentrations and their total respiratory deposition doses (RDD) in the human respiratory tract was observed while using the air cleaner during the five cooking methods. Furthermore, morphological characteristics and the relative abundance of trace elements in cooking-derived PM were also investigated. Light absorbing carbonaceous aerosols (LACA) consisting of black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) have received considerable attention because of their climate and health implications, but their sources, characteristics and fates remain unclear in Southeast Asia (SEA). In this study, we investigated spatio-temporal characteristics of LACA, their radiative properties and potential sources in Singapore under different weather conditions. Hourly BC concentrations, measured from May 2017 to March 2018, ranged from 0.31 μg/m 3 to 14.37 μg/m 3 with the mean value being 2.44 ± 1.51 μg/m 3 . High mass concentrations of BC were observed during the south-west monsoon (SWM, 2.60 ± 1.56 μg/m 3 ) while relatively low mass concentrations were recorded during the north-east monsoon (NEM, 1.68 ± 0.96 μg/m 3 ). There was a shift in the Absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) from 1.1 to 1.4 when the origin of LACA changed from fossil fuel (FF) to biomass burning (BB) combustion. This shift is attributed to the presence of secondary BrC in LACA, derived from transboundary BB emissions during the SWM. Lower AAE values were observed when local traffic emissions were dominant during the NEM. This explanation is supported by measurements of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in LACA and the corresponding AAE values determined at 365 nm using a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The AAE values, indicative of the presence of brown carbon (BrC), showed that photochemically aged LACA contribute to an enhancement in the light absorption of aerosols. In addition, spatio-temporal characteristics of BC in the intra-urban environment of Singapore were investigated across diverse outdoor and indoor microenvironments. High variability of BC was evident across these microenvironments. Several air pollution hotspots with elevated BC concentrations were identified. Graphene aerogels (GAs) are increasingly being recognized as high performance multifunctional materials to tackle our current and emerging environmental concerns. In order to extend the application potential of GAs, herein we have successfully synthesized nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) codoped GAs (NSGAs) via a simple, scalable, and inexpensive approach. Owing to their large specific surface area (up to 132 m 2  g -1 ), profound porosity, superior mechanical properties, and coexistence of N and S atoms with tunable atomic content and bonding configurations, the as-prepared NSGAs demonstrated exceptional absorption capacity toward a broad spectrum of oils and organic solvents, with an average absorption rate many folds higher than conventional absorbents. Further, the NSGAs exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of recalcitrant organic compounds under visible light illumination due to pronounced synergistic coupling effect between the heteroatoms. Specifically, after 5 h of exposure to visible light, a degradation efficiency of over 99% was observed and more than 84% of the total organic carbon was eliminated. Radical trapping experiments revealed that superoxide anion radicals are the predominant oxygen reactive species driving the photocatalytic reactions. More importantly, the mineralization byproducts did not pose any significant antibacterial activity, illustrating the environmentally benign nature of these macroscale photocatalysts., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Nitrogen (N)-doped graphene aerogels (GAs) have recently emerged as a promising class of photocatalytic materials for a multitude of environmental applications. Their photocatalytic activity depends strongly on the type of N bonding configurations created in the host lattice, which in turn relies on the choice of nitrogen sources employed as molecular precursors. However, there is still no systematic assessment of the photocatalytic activity of N-doped GAs (NGAs) synthesized using different nitrogen containing precursors. Herein, we developed a series of NGAs using different kinds of amine, such as primary and secondary amines, as nitrogen precursors and rigorously evaluated their photocatalytic activity toward degradation of acridine orange under visible light irradiation. The bonding state of N atoms in the NGAs could indeed be effectively modulated by a judicious selection of an appropriate nitrogen precursor. Primary amines resulted mainly in pyridinic N structures whereas pyrrolic N was predominantly obtained from secondary amines. Irrespective of the source of nitrogen, the photocatalytic efficiency of the NGAs was directly correlated to the concentration of pyrrolic N defects in their constituent graphene building blocks. Further, the photodegradation byproducts did not present any significant antibacterial activity, reflecting the ecofriendly nature of the as-prepared novel photocatalysts., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. This study systematically examined the potential impacts of doping CeO 2 and Fe(C 5 H 5 ) 2 nanoparticles as fuel-borne catalysts (FBCs) to ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel on the physical, chemical and toxicological characteristics of diesel particulate matter (DPM). The FBCs-doped fuels are effective in promoting soot oxidation and reducing the DPM mass emissions, but lead to a significant increase in the total particle counts due to the formation of self-nucleated metallic nanoparticles. Compared to undoped ULSD, the FBCs-doped fuels result in higher concentrations of particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes, higher fractions of organic carbon (OC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in particles, show slight alterations in soot nanostructure, reduce soot ignition temperature and activation energy. Exposure of the human-type II cell alveolar epithelial cells (A549) to DPM derived from FBCs-doped fuels shows a decrease in cell viability and alterations in the global gene expression with a broad range of biochemical pathways. The overall variations in DPM characteristics are mainly caused by the catalytic combustion process, and are related to the type, properties and contents of FBCs used in diesel fuel as well as the engine operating conditions. Environmental and health implications of the study are highlighted.

This study aims to assess the current and future air pollution and associated health impacts in Pakistan. In this study, the Pakistan Integrated Energy Model (Pak-IEM) is used to assess current and future energy consumption in Pakistan. To assess air pollution levels and associated health impacts, we used the Greenhouse gas and Air pollution INteractions and Synergies (GAINS) model. A linkage has been established between both the models to feed the energy outputs from Pak-IEM into GAINS for exploring different scenarios. Mainly, the emissions of three air pollutants (SO 2 , NO x , and PM 2.5 ) as well as the associated health impacts of increased emissions are assessed. Baseline emission scenario (BES) shows a growth in emissions of SO 2 , NO x , and PM 2.5 by a factor of 2.4, 2.2, and 2.5 between 2007 and 2030. In terms of health impacts, by 2030, annual mean concentrations of fine particles (PM 2.5 ) would increase to more than 150 μg/m 3 in some parts of Punjab region of Pakistan, for which loss in statistical life expectancy is calculated to increase from 30 to 60 months in 2007 up to 60-100 months in 2030 on average.

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations continue to rise rapidly in response to increased combustion of fossil fuels, contributing to global climate change. In order to mitigate the effects of global warming, development of new materials for cost-effective and energy-efficient CO2 capture is critically important. Graphene-based porous materials are an emerging class of solid adsorbents for selectively removing CO2 from flue gases. Herein, we report a simple and scalable approach to produce three-dimensional holey graphene frameworks with tunable porosity and pore geometry, and demonstrate their application as high-performance CO2 adsorbents. These holey graphene macrostructures exhibit a significantly improved specific surface area and pore volume compared to their pristine counterparts, and can be effectively used in post-combustion CO2 adsorption systems because of their intrinsic hydrophobicity together with good gravimetric storage capacities, rapid removal capabilities, superior cycling stabilities, and moderate initial isosteric heats. In addition, an exceptionally high CO2 over N2 selectivity can be achieved under conditions relevant to capture from the dry exhaust gas stream of a coal burning power plant, suggesting the possibility of recovering highly pure CO2 for long-term sequestration and/or utilization for downstream applications.

The characterization of aerosol acidity has received increased attention in recent years due to its influence on atmospheric visibility, climate change and human health. Distribution of water soluble inorganic (WSI) ions in 12 different size fractions of aerosols was investigated under two different atmospheric conditions (smoke-haze and non-haze periods) in 2012 using the Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) and nano-MOUDI for the first time in Singapore. To estimate the in situ acidity ([H(+)]Ins) and in situ aerosol pH (pHIS), the Aerosol Inorganic Model version-IV under deliquescent mode of airborne particles was used at prevailing ambient temperature and relative humidity. The study revealed an increase in the levels of airborne particulate matter (PM) mass and concentrations of WSI ions for all size fractions during the smoke-haze period, which was caused by the trans-boundary transport of biomass burning-impacted air masses from Indonesia. A bimodal distribution was observed for concentrations of SO4(2-), NO3(-), Cl(-), K(+) and Na(+), whereas concentrations of NH4(+), Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) showed a single mode distribution. The concentration of WSI ions in PM1.8 during the smoke-haze period increased by 3.8 (for SO4(2-)) to 10.5 (for K(+)) times more than those observed during the non-haze period. The pHIS were observed to be lower during the smoke-haze period than that during the non-haze period for all size fractions of PM, indicating that atmospheric aerosols were more acidic due to the influence of biomass burning emissions. The particles in the accumulation mode were more acidic than those in the coarse mode.

Recurrent smoke-haze episodes that occur in Southeast Asia (SEA) are of much concern because of their environmental and health impacts. These haze episodes are mainly caused by uncontrolled biomass and peat burning in Indonesia. Airborne particulate matter (PM) samples were collected in the southwest coast of Singapore from 16 August to 9 November in 2009 to assess the impact of smoke-haze episodes on the air quality due to the long-range transport of biomass and peat burning emissions. The physical and chemical characteristics of PM were investigated during pre-haze, smoke-haze, and post-haze periods. Days with PM2.5 mass concentrations of ≥35 μg m(-3) were considered as smoke-haze events. Using this criterion, out of the total 82 sampling days, nine smoke-haze events were identified. The origin of air masses during smoke-haze episodes was studied on the basis of HYSPLIT backward air trajectory analysis for 4 days. In terms of the physical properties of PM, higher particle surface area concentrations and particle gravimetric mass concentrations were observed during the smoke-haze period, but there was no consistent pattern for particle number concentrations during the haze period as compared to the non-haze period except that there was a significant increase at about 08:00, which could be attributed to the entrainment of PM from aloft after the breakdown of the nocturnal inversion layer. As for the chemical characteristics of PM, among the six key inorganic water-soluble ions (Cl(-), NO3(-), nss-SO4(2-), Na(+), NH4(+), and nss-K(+)) measured in this study, NO3(-), nss-SO4(2-), and NH4(+) showed a significant increase in their concentrations during the smoke-haze period together with nss-K(+). These observations suggest that the increased atmospheric loading of PM with higher surface area and increased concentrations of optically active secondary inorganic aerosols [(NH4)2SO4 or NH4HSO4 and NH4NO3] resulted in the atmospheric visibility reduction in SEA due to the advection of biomass and peat burning emissions.

Food waste represents a significantly fraction of municipal solid waste. Proper management and recycling of huge volumes of food waste are required to reduce its environmental burdens and to minimize risks to human health. Food waste is indeed an untapped resource with great potential for energy production. Utilization of food waste for energy conversion currently represents a challenge due to various reasons. These include its inherent heterogeneously variable compositions, high moisture contents and low calorific value, which constitute an impediment for the development of robust, large scale, and efficient industrial processes. Although a considerable amount of research has been carried out on the conversion of food waste to renewable energy, there is a lack of comprehensive and systematic reviews of the published literature. The present review synthesizes the current knowledge available in the use of technologies for food-waste-to-energy conversion involving biological (e.g. anaerobic digestion and fermentation), thermal and thermochemical technologies (e.g. incineration, pyrolysis, gasification and hydrothermal oxidation). The competitive advantages of these technologies as well as the challenges associated with them are discussed. In addition, the future directions for more effective utilization of food waste for renewable energy generation are suggested from an interdisciplinary perspective., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Toxic elements present in airborne particulate matter (PM) are associated with human health effects; however, their toxic characteristics depend on the source of their origins and their concentrations in ambient air. Twenty four elements (Al, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, Te, Tl, and Zn) in 12 different size fractions of PM ranging from 10 nm to 10 μm were characterized in Singapore during two different atmospheric conditions (smoke haze and non-haze periods) in 2012 for the first time. In addition, their possible sources were identified based on backward air trajectory analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). The health implications of inhalable particles were assessed using a human airway deposition model, the Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry model (MPPD). The results concerning particle-bound trace elements are interpreted in terms of coarse (PM2.5-10), fine (PM2.5), ultrafine (PM0.01-0.1, 0.01 μm < Dp < 0.10 μm), and nano (PM0.01-0.056, 0.01 μm < Dp < 0.056 μm) particles. The ratios of elemental concentrations measured between the smoke haze episode and the non-haze period in coarse, fine, ultrafine, and nano particles varied from 1.2 (Bi) to 6.6 (Co). Both the PCA and backward trajectory analysis revealed that trans-boundary biomass-burning emissions from Indonesia were primarily responsible for enhanced concentrations of particulate-bound elements during the smoke haze episode. The particle depositions in the respiratory system were higher during the smoke haze episode compared to the non-haze period. The study finds that ultrafine and nano particles present in the atmosphere have higher tendencies to be deposited into the deeper parts of the respiratory system, compared to coarse and fine particles.

A novel thermochemical conversion route has been developed that yields 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from food waste biomass (FWB) in the presence of a heterogeneous catalysts (zirconium phosphate (ZrP)). The ZrP catalyst was prepared by precipitation followed by calcination at 400 (ZrP-400) and 600 °C (ZrP-600) and was characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS, N2 sorption and NH3-TPD. The optimized reaction conditions were identified to maximize HMF yield by varying the type of catalyst, the catalyst loading and the reaction time. The highest HMF yield achieved was 4.3%. On average 33% higher yield for ZrP-600 was obtained compared to that for ZrP-400, which might be due to higher number of acid sites on ZrP-600. The ZrP catalyst was easily regenerated by thermal treatment and showed stable activity upon its reuse. Preliminary calculations of the "minimum selling price" of HMF suggest that it is economically attractive to make this industrially-relevant chemical from FWB., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A systematic study was conducted to make a comparative evaluation of the effects of blending five different oxygenates (diglyme (DGM), palm oil methyl ester (PME), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl adipate (DEA), and butanol (Bu)) with ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) at 2% and 4% oxygen levels on physicochemical and toxicological characteristics of particulate emissions from a nonroad diesel engine. All blended fuels led to an overall decrease in the particulate mass concentration and elemental carbon (EC) emissions, which was strongly associated with the oxygen content in fuels and the specific type of fuels used. In general, the proportion of particulate-bound organic carbon (OC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) increased while using oxygenated fuel blends. Compared to ULSD, all fuel blends showed different emission factors of particle-phase PAHs and n-alkanes, slight alterations in soot nanostructure, lower soot ignition temperature, and lower activation energy. The total counts of particles (≤ 560 nm diameter) emitted decreased gradually for ULSD blended with DMC, DEA, and Bu, while they increased significantly for other fuel blends. The in vitro toxicity of particulates significantly increased with ULSD blended with DMC and DEA, while it decreased when ULSD was blended with PME, DGM, and Bu.

Food waste was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis prior to hydrothermal treatment to produce hydrochars and bio-oil. Pre-treatment of food waste with an enzyme ratio of 1:2:1 (carbohydrase:protease:lipase) proved to be effective in converting food waste to the two products with improved yields. The carbon contents and calorific values ranged from 43.7% to 65.4% and 17.4 to 26.9 MJ/kg for the hydrochars obtained with the enzyme-assisted pre-treatment, respectively while they varied from 38.2% to 53.5% and 15.0 to 21.7 MJ/kg, respectively for the hydrochars obtained with no pre-treatment. Moreover, the formation of carbonaceous microspheres with low concentrations of inorganic elements and diverse surface functional groups was observed in the case of enzyme-assisted food waste hydrochars. The impact of rainwater on the microbial quality of a tropical freshwater reservoir through atmospheric wet deposition of microorganisms was studied for the first time. Reservoir water samples were collected at four different sampling points and rainwater samples were collected in the immediate vicinity of the reservoir sites for a period of four months (January to April, 2012) during the Northeast monsoon period. Microbial quality of all fresh rainwater and reservoir water samples was assessed based on the counts for the microbial indicators: Escherichia coli (E. coli), total coliforms, and Enterococci along with total heterotrophic plate counts (HPC). The taxonomic richness and phylogenetic relationship of the freshwater reservoir with those of the fresh rainwater were also assessed using 16 S rRNA gene clone library construction. The levels of E. coli were found to be in the range of 0 CFU/100 mL-75 CFU/100 mL for the rainwater, and were 10-94 CFU/100 mL for the reservoir water. The sampling sites that were influenced by highway traffic emissions showed the maximum counts for all the bacterial indicators assessed. There was no significant increase in the bacterial abundances observed in the reservoir water immediately following rainfall. However, the composite fresh rainwater and reservoir water samples exhibited broad phylogenetic diversity, including sequences representing Betaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Lentisphaerae and Bacteriodetes. Members of the Betaproteobacteria group were the most dominant in both fresh rainwater and reservoir water, followed by Alphaproteobacteria, Sphingobacteria, Actinobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria.

Hydrothermal carbonization of urban food waste was carried out to prepare hydrochars for removal of Acridine Orange and Rhodamine 6G dyes from contaminated water. The chemical composition and microstructure properties of the synthesized hydrochars were investigated in details. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that hydrochars with lower degree of carbonization were more efficient in adsorption of dyes. Operational parameters such as pH and temperature had a strong influence on the dye uptake process. The adsorption equilibrium data showed excellent fit to the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided a better correlation for the experimental kinetic data in comparison to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic investigations suggested that dye adsorption onto hydrochars was spontaneous and endothermic. The mechanism of dye removal appears to be associated with physisorption. The present study aimed at evaluating the uptake of two widely used nanoparticles (NPs), namely, silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs by zebrafish embryos under different simulated environmental conditions. AgNPs and TiO2NPs are widely used in a number of consumer products, and are thus likely to be introduced into the aquatic environments from both domestic and industrial sources. These NPs could interact with other contaminants in aquatic systems, which could affect their uptake by fish and biodistribution kinetics. To provide insights into these interactions, uptake studies were conducted in the presence of 12 elements and 3 major inorganic nutrients using (1) single (AgNPs and TiO2NPs separately), (2) binary (containing either both AgNPs and TiO2NPs or one of the NPs and elements/nutrients) and (3) multi-components (conducted in real water samples collected from a tropical reservoir). In addition to the uptake of NPs, mortality, hatchability and heart rates of zebrafish embryos were also measured as part of these experiments. Results showed that AgNPs were taken up by the embryos to a larger extent as compared to TiO2NPs. Moreover, AgNPs were more toxic to zebrafish embryos as compared to TiO2NPs. In the presence of elements (5 μg mL(-1)) and nutrients (5 and 10 μg mL(-1)) together with one of the two NPs (10 μg mL(-1)), both an increase and a decrease in the uptake of NPs were observed in embryos. Results from this exploratory study show that in the presence of environmental contaminants, the uptake of these NPs can be affected significantly. Recurring biomass burning-induced smoke haze is a serious regional air pollution problem in Southeast Asia (SEA). The June 2013 haze episode was one of the worst air pollution events in SEA. Size segregated particulate samples (2.5-1.0 μm; 1.0-0.5 μm; 0.5- 0.2 μm; and <0.2 μm) were collected during the June 2013 haze episode. PM2.5 concentrations were elevated (up to 329 μg/m(3)) during the haze episode, compared to those during the nonhaze period (11-21 μg/m(3)). Chemical fractionation of particulate-bound trace elements (B, Ca, K, Fe, Al, Ni, Zn, Mg, Se, Cu, Cr, As, Mn, Pb, Co, and Cd) was done using sequential extraction procedures. There was a 10-fold increase in the concentration of K, an inorganic tracer of biomass burning. A major fraction (>60%) of the elements was present in oxidizable and residual fractions while the bioavailable (exchangeable) fraction accounted for up to 20% for most of the elements except K and Mn. Deposition of inhaled potentially toxic trace elements in various regions of the human respiratory system was estimated using a Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry model. The particle depositions in the respiratory system tend to be more severe during hazy days than those during nonhazy days. A prolonged exposure to finer particles can thus cause adverse health outcomes during hazy days. Health risk estimates revealed that the excessive lifetime carcinogenic risk to individuals exposed to biomass burning-impacted aerosols (18 ± 1 × 10(-6)) increased significantly (P < 0.05) compared to those who exposed to urban air (12 ± 2 × 10(-6)).

Toxic particulate elements present in cigarette smoke pose health threats to the life of smokers due to direct inhalation and at the same time increase health risks to non-smokers present in the vicinity of smokers because of their exposure. This study conducted a series of experiments using a controlled experimental chamber, equipped with simulated smoking conditions for characterization of particulate trace elements in mainstream and sidestream cigarette smoke. Four popular commercial cigarette brands available in Singapore market were used in this study. The target elements for extraction and analysis were Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sn, Sr, Te, Tl and Zn of both water-soluble and total constituents. The human health risk assessment results showed that the sidestream smoke had higher concentrations of toxic elements than those in the mainstream smoke. However, risk assessment analysis revealed that the sidestream smoke resulted in less human health risks compared to the mainstream smoke due to the influence of dilution of particulate emissions in sidestream smoke prior to inhalation exposure experienced by non-smokers. The cumulative non-cancer and cancer risks of toxic elements varied from 2.0 to 3.1 and from 398.4×10(-6) to 626.1×10(-6) due to inhalation of cigarette smoke by an active smoker. In the case of non-smokers, the risks were estimated under three possible cases of exposure. The cumulative cancer risks under three different cases were greater than the permissible limits. Adsorption technology is widely considered as the most promising and robust method of purifying water at low cost and with high-efficiency. Carbon-based materials have been extensively explored for adsorption applications because of their good chemical stability, structural diversity, low density, and suitability for large scale production. Graphene--a single atomic layer of graphite--is the newest member in the family of carbon allotropes and has emerged as the "celeb" material of the 21st century. Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov, Geim and co-workers, graphene has attracted increased attention in a wide range of applications due to its unprecedented electrical, mechanical, thermal, optical and transport properties. Graphene's infinitely high surface-to-volume ratio has resulted in a large number of investigations to study its application as a potential adsorbent for water purification. More recently, other graphene related materials such as graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and few-layered graphene oxide sheets, as well as nanocomposites of graphene materials have also emerged as a promising group of adsorbent for the removal of various environmental pollutants from waste effluents. In this review article, we present a synthesis of the current knowledge available on this broad and versatile family of graphene nanomaterials for removal of dyes, potentially toxic elements, phenolic compounds and other organic chemicals from aquatic systems. The challenges involved in the development of these novel nanoadsorbents for decontamination of wastewaters have also been examined to help identify future directions for this emerging field to continue to grow., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Combustion experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of using blends of ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) with biodiesel or n-butanol on physicochemical and toxicological characteristics of particulate emissions from a non-road diesel engine. The results indicated that compared to ULSD, both the blended fuels could effectively reduce the particulate mass and elemental carbon emissions, with butanol being more effective than biodiesel. The proportion of organic carbon and volatile organic compounds in particles increased for both blended fuels. However, biodiesel blended fuels showed lower total particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emissions. The total number emissions of particles ≤560nm in diameter decreased gradually for the butanol blended fuels, but increased significantly for the biodiesel blended fuels. Both the blended fuels indicated lower soot ignition temperature and activation energy. All the particle extracts showed a decline in cell viability with the increased dose. However, the change in cell viability among test fuels is not statistically significant different with the exception of DB-4 (biodiesel-diesel blend containing 4% oxygen) used at 75% engine load., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. In this study, a comparative assessment of the effectiveness of ssDNA and chlorine as disinfectants for treating water contaminated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) was investigated on the basis of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. The gene targets addressed for the ssDNA based inhibition method were marA (multiple antibiotic resistance) and groL (essential gene Hsp60) in E. coli. Based on the maximum log reduction in E. coli cell numbers when compared to no ssDNA control, groL-1 was chosen as the optimized ssDNA for gene silencing-based inactivation. For toxicity assessment, HepG2 cells were exposed to extracts corresponding to concentrations of 0.2, 1, 5, 25 and 50 mL water/mL medium of chlorine doped water and 1, 10, 100, 300 nM of ssDNA. Compared with ssDNA, HepG2 cells exposed to extracts of chlorine doped water for 24 h showed higher cytotoxicity, caspase 3/7 levels, DNA damage, micronuclei frequency, and decreased cell viability. Water doped with chlorine was found to be more toxic than that by ssDNA when exposed to HepG2 cells. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for comparative evaluation of new and conventional disinfection methods by taking into consideration the outcome of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assessments., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In the present study, the conversion of fuel-N to HCN and NH3 was investigated during rapid pyrolysis of raw biomass (coconut fiber), its corresponding biochar and their blends with lignite within a temperature range of 600-900°C. The results showed that the raw biomass and the biochar showed totally different nitrogen partitioning between NH3 and HCN. HCN was the dominant nitrogen pollutant from pyrolysis of raw biomass, while for the biochar pyrolysis the yield of NH3 was slightly higher than that of HCN. Synergistic interactions occurred within both raw biomass/lignite and biochar/lignite blends, especially for the biochar/lignite blend, and resulted in reduced yields of HCN and NH3, decreased the total nitrogen percentage retained in the char and promoted harmless N2 formation. These findings suggest that biochar/lignite co-firing for energy production may have the enhanced benefit of reduced emissions of nitrogen pollutants than raw biomass/lignite., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. This work represents the first study of its kind that was conducted to evaluate changes in lipid metabolic networks following a balneation exposure of adult zebrafish to MCLR (microcystin-leucine-arginine) and MCRR (microcystin-arginine-arginine) at a sublethal dose (10 μg L(-1)) for a period of 30 days. Following the exposure to MCLR and MCRR, gills, liver, intestine, and brain tissues were harvested for metabolite extraction. Extracted metabolites were detected using qTOF-LC-MS (time-of-flight-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry). Metabolites were identified using Kegg pathways. The identified metabolites are shown on lipid biochemical maps to demonstrate major perturbations in the metabolic machinery. Results showed that most of the metabolic pathways under the lipid class were affected in different tissues of zebrafish following the exposure to MCLR and MCRR (10 μg L(-1) for 30 days). The kind and flux of metabolic perturbations varied among different tissues of the organs after the exposure to MCLR and MCRR with the tissues of gills being the most affected. Among the various lipid pathways, cholesterol synthesis was affected significantly as observed from the highest number of perturbed metabolites in that pathway. Cholesterol is responsible for synthesis of steroid hormones and bile acids, which have been recognized as endocrine signaling molecules. Disruption in the synthesis of these compounds following MCLR/MCRR exposure suggests that MCs are capable of causing endocrine disruption among aquatic organisms even under sublethal conditions. Apart from cholesterol synthesis, various other metabolic pathways belonging to the class of essential fatty acids and lipid oxidation were also observed to be perturbed following a balneation exposure of zebrafish to MCLR/MCRR.

Gaseous ammonia (NH3) is the most abundant alkaline gas in the atmosphere. In addition, it is a major component of total reactive nitrogen. The largest source of NH3 emissions is agriculture, including animal husbandry and NH3-based fertilizer applications. Other sources of NH3 include industrial processes, vehicular emissions and volatilization from soils and oceans. Recent studies have indicated that NH3 emissions have been increasing over the last few decades on a global scale. This is a concern because NH3 plays a significant role in the formation of atmospheric particulate matter, visibility degradation and atmospheric deposition of nitrogen to sensitive ecosystems. Thus, the increase in NH3 emissions negatively influences environmental and public health as well as climate change. For these reasons, it is important to have a clear understanding of the sources, deposition and atmospheric behaviour of NH3. Over the last two decades, a number of research papers have addressed pertinent issues related to NH3 emissions into the atmosphere at global, regional and local scales. This review article integrates the knowledge available on atmospheric NH3 from the literature in a systematic manner, describes the environmental implications of unabated NH3 emissions and provides a scientific basis for developing effective control strategies for NH3.
