Purpose: Given the potential role of light and its wavelength on ocular growth, this study investigated the effect of short-term exposure to red, cyan and blue light on ocular biometry in humans., Methods: Forty-four young adults and 20 children, comprising emmetropes and myopes, underwent 2-h sessions of cyan (507 nm), red (638 nm) and broadband white light on three separate days via light-emitting glasses. Additionally, young adults were exposed to blue light (454 nm) on an additional day. Axial length (AL) and choroidal thickness (CT) were measured in the right eye before the light exposure (0 min), after 60 and 120 min of exposure and 30 min after light offset using an optical biometer and optical coherence tomographer, respectively., Results: Compared to broadband light, exposure to red light resulted in a significant increase in AL (mean difference between white and red light at 120 min, +0.007 mm [0.002]), but no significant change in CT, while cyan light caused a significant AL reduction (-0.010 mm [0.003]) and choroidal thickening (+0.008 mm [0.002]) in young adults (p < 0.05). Blue light caused a significant decrease of -0.007 mm (0.002) in young adult eyes at 60 min (p < 0.05). In children, cyan light led to a significant reduction in AL (-0.016 mm [0.004]) and strong sustained choroidal thickening (+0.014 mm [0.004]) compared to broadband light at 120 min (p < 0.05). The effects of cyan light on AL and CT were found to be stronger in myopic young adults and emmetropic children. The opposing effects of red and cyan light on ocular biometry were similar between the two age groups (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Exposure to cyan light resulted in AL reduction and choroidal thickening in both young adults and children. Purpose: This study proposes a practical method for evaluating 2D spatial resolution with scatter on a CZT planar detector gamma camera, which is simpler and faster than the NEMA method. It is used to characterize the influence of distance on spatial resolution FWHM on a CZT camera equipped with a WEHR collimator., Methods: The practical method uses linear sources tilted with respect to the detector axes. The spatial resolution full width at half maximum (FWHM) with four tilt angles was compared to the FWHM evaluated using the NEMA NU1-2018 method. Spatial resolution FWHM was also assessed with tilted sources acquired at distances of 0 to 20 cm using a single angle, with and without the post-processing image enhancement proposed by the manufacturer., Results: Estimated spatial resolution FWHM with tilted sources was close to the spatial resolution FWHM estimated at 7.63 mm by the NEMA method, with deviations ranging from - 5.62 to 4.59% at 10 cm depending on the angle considered. The study of spatial resolution FWHM dependence on distance indicates that, for distances less than 3 cm, the FWHM no longer decreases with distance. The manufacturer's post-processing reduces the FWHM by an average of 15%., Conclusion: The practical method is quicker to implement and gives comparable results to the NEMA reference method for spatial resolution FWHM. Evaluation of spatial resolution with linear sources at short distances from the collimator is limited by the collimator effect and signal digitization. A history of Childhood Maltreatment (CM) has been repeatedly associated with an increased risk of developing bipolar disorders (BD) or schizophrenia (SZ). The impact of severe stress induced by CM has been proposed to be mediated by elevated inflammation reflected by dysregulated inflammatory processes. Little is known about the potential impact of CM on lymphocyte subpopulations or the role of pre-existing infections on CM physiological consequences. This study therefore explored the role of CM and past infection exposure impact on lymphocyte subpopulations to give an indication of their relevance as stressors in the pathoetiology of major mood and psychotic disorders. 118 adult patients with SZ, and 152 with BD were included in the analysis. CM history was assessed by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), with current and past psychiatric symptomatology also evaluated. Circulating immune cell subsets were analyzed using flow cytometry-based analysis. Past exposure to common infectious stigma including toxoplasma, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) were measured by solid phase-enzyme microplate and ELISA immunoassays. The relationship between CM, biological phenotypes (including immune cell subsets distribution and past infectious status) and clinical phenotypes were analyzed using univariate and multivariate analyses. BD patients with, versus without, CM had higher levels of CD3 + CD8 + cytotoxic T cells and CMV antibodies along with decreased levels of CD45RA + CCR7 + CD8 + naïve CD8 + T cells, and a more severe clinical profile. CMV antibody levels were inversely associated with the CD3 + CD8 + lymphocyte subset level. SZ patients with, versus without, CM, showed lower levels of CD14 + monocytes and no specific clinical characteristics. The accumulation of different types of maltreatment associated with increased body mass index and CMV autoantibodies as well as decreased levels of CD14 + monocytes. In both BD and SZ, further analysis according to the type and the number of CM subtypes showed association with specific changes in lymphocyte cell subsets, clinical profile, and infectious stigma. Adults with BD or SZ exposed to CM exhibit specific immune cell subset profiles, clinical features, and stigma of past infections. In BD, our data indicate an interplay between CM and CMV infections, which may possibly contribute to premature aging and cellular senescence, both of which have previously been shown to associate with mood disorders. Purpose: Previous studies have shown that time spent outdoors is protective against myopia development in children. In this study, we examined the effects of 500 and 1000 lux of illumination to the eye on axial length (AL) and choroidal thickness (CT) changes in young adults., Methods: Fifteen participants (mean age, 21.60 years [2.16]) with a mean refraction of -0.34 D (0.37) were exposed to 500 and 1000 lux of illumination for 120 min in a dark room on two different days, using a pair of light-emitting glasses. Ocular measurements were repeated on an additional day in darkness (~5 lux). Ocular biometrics and CT were measured and analysed in the right eye before the light exposure (0 min), after 30, 60 and 120 min of exposure and 30 min after light offset to measure recovery using the Lenstar biometer and the Cirrus optical coherence tomographer, respectively., Results: Exposure to 500 and 1000 lux of illumination resulted in a significant reduction in AL at 30, 60 and 120 min compared to darkness (AL change at 120 min: darkness, +0.020 mm [0.004]; 500 lux, -0.006 mm [0.004]; 1000 lux, -0.013 mm [0.004]; p < 0.001). Exposure to 500 and 1000 lux caused a significant overall thickening of the subfoveal choroid compared to darkness (CT change across 120 min: darkness, -0.010 mm [0.007]; 500 lux, +0.006 mm [0.005]; 1000 lux, +0.009 mm [0.003], p = 0.02). Ocular changes were not significantly different between the two illumination levels (p > 0.05) and returned to baseline within 30 min of light offset., Conclusions: Exposure to mild- or moderate-intensity illumination on the eye can induce a significant short-term reduction in AL and an increase in CT in young adults. Bipolar affective disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric illness, for which lithium (Li) is the gold standard for acute and maintenance therapies. The therapeutic response to Li in BD is heterogeneous and reliable biomarkers allowing patients stratification are still needed. A GWAS performed by the International Consortium on Lithium Genetics (ConLiGen) has recently identified genetic markers associated with treatment responses to Li in the human leukocyte antigens (HLA) region. To better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying this association, we have genetically imputed the classical alleles of the HLA region in the European patients of the ConLiGen cohort. We found our best signal for amino-acid variants belonging to the HLA-DRB1*11:01 classical allele, associated with a better response to Li (p < 1 × 10 -3 ; FDR < 0.09 in the recessive model). Alanine or Leucine at position 74 of the HLA-DRB1 heavy chain was associated with a good response while Arginine or Glutamic acid with a poor response. As these variants have been implicated in common inflammatory/autoimmune processes, our findings strongly suggest that HLA-mediated low inflammatory background may contribute to the efficient response to Li in BD patients, while an inflammatory status overriding Li anti-inflammatory properties would favor a weak response., (© 2021. Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are remnants of infections that took place several million years ago and represent around 8% of the human genome. Despite evidence implicating increased expression of HERV type W envelope (HERV-W ENV) in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, it remains unknown whether such expression is associated with distinct clinical or biological characteristics and symptoms. Accordingly, we performed unsupervised two-step clustering of a multivariate data set that included HERV-W ENV protein antigenemia, serum cytokine levels, childhood trauma scores, and clinical data of cohorts of patients with schizophrenia (n = 29), bipolar disorder (n = 43) and healthy controls (n = 32). We found that subsets of patients with schizophrenia (~41%) and bipolar disorder (~28%) show positive antigenemia for HERV-W ENV protein, whereas the large majority (96%) of controls was found to be negative for ENV protein. Unsupervised cluster analysis identified the presence of two main clusters of patients, which were best predicted by the presence or absence of HERV-W ENV protein. HERV-W expression was associated with increased serum levels of inflammatory cytokines and higher childhood maltreatment scores. Furthermore, patients with schizophrenia who were positive for HERV-W ENV protein showed more manic symptoms and higher daily chlorpromazine (CPZ) equivalents, whereas HERV-W ENV positive patients with bipolar disorder were found to have an earlier disease onset than those who were negative for HERV-W ENV protein. Taken together, our study suggest that HERV-W ENV protein antigenemia and cytokines can be used to stratify patients with major mood and psychotic disorders into subgroups with differing inflammatory and clinical profiles.

The stability of fermentative hydrogen production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was evaluated in this work using a strategy of effluent recycling. Three pretreatment conditions were applied on the recycled effluent: a) no heat shock treatment, b) one initial heat shock treatment (90 °C, 30 min) and c) systematic heat shock treatment at the beginning of each fermentation. When a systematic heat shock was applied, a maximal hydrogen yield of 17.2 ± 3.8 mLH 2 /gVS was attained. The hydrogen productivity was improved by 331% reaching a stable value of 1.51 ± 0.29 mLH 2 /gVS/h, after 8 cycles of effluent recycling. This strategy caused a sharp decrease of diversity with stable co-dominance of hydrogen- and lactate-producing bacteria, ie. Clostridiales and Lactobacillales, respectively. For the other conditions, a sharp decrease of the hydrogen yields was observed showing the importance of applying a heat shock treatment for optimal hydrogen production with effluent recycling., (Copyright © 2020. Lighting is rapidly changing with the introduction of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in our homes, workplaces, and cities. This evolution of our optical landscape raises major concerns regarding phototoxicity to the retina since light exposure is an identified risk factor for the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In this disease, cone photoreceptors degenerate while the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is accumulating lipofuscin containing phototoxic compounds such as A2E. Therefore, it remains unclear if the light-elicited degenerative process is initiated in cones or in the RPE. Using purified cone photoreceptors from pig retina, we here investigated the effect of light on cone survival from 390 to 510 nm in 10 nm steps, plus the 630 nm band. If at a given intensity (0.2 mW/cm²), the most toxic wavelengths are comprised in the visible-to-near-UV range, they shift to blue-violet light (425-445 nm) when exposing cells to a solar source filtered by the eye optics. In contrast to previous rodent studies, this cone photoreceptor phototoxicity is not related to light absorption by the visual pigment. Despite bright flavin autofluorescence of cone inner segment, excitation-emission matrix of this inner segment suggested that cone phototoxicity was instead caused by porphyrin. Toxic light intensities were lower than those previously defined for A2E-loaded RPE cells indicating cones are the first cells at risk for a direct light insult. These results are essential to normative regulations of new lighting but also for the prevention of human retinal pathologies since toxic solar light intensities are encountered even at high latitudes.

Objectives: To assess the impact on image quality and dose reduction of a new deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithm compared with a hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithm., Methods: Data acquisitions were performed at seven dose levels (CTDI vol : 15/10/7.5/5/2.5/1/0.5 mGy) using a standard phantom designed for image quality assessment. Raw data were reconstructed using the filtered back projection (FBP), two levels of IR (ASiR-V50% (AV50); ASiR-V100% (AV100)), and three levels of DLIR (TrueFidelity™ low, medium, high). Noise power spectrum (NPS) and task-based transfer function (TTF) were computed. Detectability index (d') was computed to model a large mass in the liver, a small calcification, and a small subtle lesion with low contrast., Results: NPS peaks were higher with AV50 than with all DLIR levels and only higher with DLIR-H than with AV100. The average NPS spatial frequencies were higher with DLIR than with IR. For all DLIR levels, TTF 50% obtained with DLIR was higher than that with IR. d' was higher with DLIR than with AV50 but lower with DLIR-L and DLIR-M than with AV100. d' values were higher with DLIR-H than with AV100 for the small low-contrast lesion (10 ± 4%) and in the same range for the other simulated lesions., Conclusions: New DLIR algorithm reduced noise and improved spatial resolution and detectability without changing the noise texture. Blue light is an identified risk factor for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), leading to neovascularization, is a major complication of the wet form of this disease. We investigated how blue light affects VEGF expression and secretion using A2E-loaded retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, a cell model of AMD. Incubation of RPE cells with A2E resulted in a significant increase in VEGF mRNA and, intracellular and secreted VEGF protein levels, but not mRNA levels of VEGFR1 or VEGFR2. Blue light exposure of A2E-loaded RPE cells resulted in a decrease in VEGF mRNA and protein levels, but an increase in VEGFR1 levels. The toxicity of 440 nm light on A2E-loaded RPE cells was enhanced by VEGF supplementation. Our results suggest that age-related A2E accumulation may result in VEGF synthesis and release. This synthesis of VEGF, which enhances blue light toxicity for the RPE cells, is itself suppressed by blue light. Purpose: To assess the efficiency of combined use of ArcCheck ® detector (AC) and portal dosimetry (PDIP) for delivery quality assurance of head and neck and prostate volumetric-modulated arc therapy., Materials and Methods: Measurement processes were studied with the Gamma index method according to three analysis protocols. The detection sensitivity to technical errors of each individual or combined measurement processes was studied by inserting collimator, dose and MLC opening error into five head and neck and five prostate initial treatment plans. A total of 220 plans were created and 660 analyses were conducted by comparing measurements to error free planned dose matrix., Results: For head and neck localization, collimator errors could be detected from 2° for AC and 3° for PDIP. Dose and MLC errors could be detected from 2% and 0.5 mm for AC and PDIP. Depending on the analysis protocol, the detection sensitivity of total simulated errors ranged from 54% to 88% for AC vs 40% to 74% for PDIP and 58% to 92% for the combined process. For the prostate localization, collimator errors could be detected from 4° for AC while they could not be detected by PDIP. Dose and MLC errors could be detected from 3% and 0.5 mm for AC and PDIP. The detection sensitivity of total simulated errors ranged from 30% to 56% for AC vs 16% to 38% for PDIP and 30% to 58% for combined process., Conclusion: The combined use of the two measurement processes did not statistically improve the detectability of technical errors compared to use of single process., (© 2018 The Authors. The study of the adaptation mechanisms that allow microorganisms to live and proliferate in an extreme habitat is a growing research field. Directly exposed to the external environment, lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria are of great appeal as they can present particular structural features that may aid the understanding of the adaptation processes. Moreover, through being involved in modulating the mammalian immune system response in a structure-dependent fashion, the elucidation of the LPS structure can also be seen as a fundamental step from a biomedical point of view. In this paper, the lipid A structure of the LPS from Spiribacter salinus M19-40 T , a halophilic gamma-proteobacteria, was characterized through chemical analyses and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry. This revealed a mixture of mono- and bisphosphorylated penta- to tri-acylated species with the uncommon 2 + 3 symmetry and bearing an unusual 3-oxotetradecaonic acid., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Aims: Blue light is an identified risk factor for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We investigated oxidative stress markers and mitochondrial changes in A2E-loaded retinal pigment epithelium cells under the blue-green part of the solar spectrum that reaches the retina to better understand the mechanisms underlying light-elicited toxicity., Results: Primary retinal pigment epithelium cells were loaded with a retinal photosensitizer, AE2, to mimic aging. Using a custom-made illumination device that delivers 10 nm-wide light bands, we demonstrated that A2E-loaded RPE cells generated high levels of both hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and superoxide anion (O 2 •- ) when exposed to blue-violet light. In addition, they exhibited perinuclear clustering of mitochondria with a decrease of both their mitochondrial membrane potential and their respiratory activities. The increase of oxidative stress resulted in increased levels of the oxidized form of glutathione and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities. Furthermore, mRNA expression levels of the main antioxidant enzymes (SOD2, catalase, and GPX1) also decreased., Conclusions: Using an innovative illumination device, we measured the precise action spectrum of the oxidative stress mechanisms on A2E-loaded retinal pigment epithelium cells. We defined 415-455 nm blue-violet light, within the solar spectrum reaching the retina, to be the spectral band that generates the highest amount of reactive oxygen species and produces the highest level of mitochondrial dysfunction, explaining its toxic effect. This study further highlights the need to filter these wavelengths from the eyes of AMD patients.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this study was to compare a routine bone SPECT/CT protocol using CT reconstructed with filtered backprojection (FBP) with an optimized protocol using low-dose CT images reconstructed with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR)., Methods: In this prospective study, enrolled patients underwent bone SPECT/CT, with 1 SPECT acquisition followed by 2 randomized CT acquisitions: FBP CT (FBP; noise index, 25) and ASiR CT (70% ASiR; noise index, 40). The image quality of both attenuation-corrected SPECT and CT images was visually (5-point Likert scale, 2 interpreters) and quantitatively (contrast ratio [CR] and signal-to-noise ratio [SNR]) estimated. The CT dose index volume, dose-length product, and effective dose were compared., Results: Seventy-five patients were enrolled in the study. Quantitative attenuation-corrected SPECT evaluation showed no inferiority for contrast ratio and SNR issued from FBP CT or ASiR CT (respectively, 13.41 ± 7.83 vs. 13.45 ± 7.99 and 2.33 ± 0.83 vs. 2.32 ± 0.84). Qualitative image analysis showed no difference between attenuation-corrected SPECT images issued from FBP CT or ASiR CT for both interpreters (respectively, 3.5 ± 0.6 vs. 3.5 ± 0.6 and 3.6 ± 0.5 vs. 3.6 ± 0.5). Quantitative CT evaluation showed no inferiority for SNR between FBP and ASiR CT images (respectively, 0.93 ± 0.16 and 1.07 ± 0.17). Qualitative image analysis showed no quality difference between FBP and ASiR CT images for both interpreters (respectively, 3.8 ± 0.5 vs. 3.6 ± 0.5 and 4.0 ± 0.1 vs. 4.0 ± 0.2). Mean CT dose index volume, dose-length product, and effective dose for ASiR CT (3.0 ± 2.0 mGy, 148 ± 85 mGy⋅cm, and 2.2 ± 1.3 mSv) were significantly lower than for FBP CT (8.5 ± 3.7 mGy, 365 ± 160 mGy⋅cm, and 5.5 ± 2.4 mSv)., Conclusion: The use of 70% ASiR blending in bone SPECT/CT can reduce the CT radiation dose by 60%, with no sacrifice in attenuation-corrected SPECT and CT image quality, compared with the conventional protocol using FBP CT reconstruction technique., (© 2016 by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Inc.)

Among the identified risk factors of age-related macular degeneration, sunlight is known to induce cumulative damage to the retina. A photosensitive derivative of the visual pigment, N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E), may be involved in this phototoxicity. The high energy visible light between 380 nm and 500 nm (blue light) is incriminated. Our aim was to define the most toxic wavelengths in the blue-green range on an in vitro model of the disease. Primary cultures of porcine retinal pigment epithelium cells were incubated for 6 hours with different A2E concentrations and exposed for 18 hours to 10 nm illumination bands centered from 380 to 520 nm in 10 nm increments. Light irradiances were normalized with respect to the natural sunlight reaching the retina. Six hours after light exposure, cell viability, necrosis and apoptosis were assessed using the Apotox-Glo Triplex™ assay. Retinal pigment epithelium cells incubated with A2E displayed fluorescent bodies within the cytoplasm. Their absorption and emission spectra were similar to those of A2E. Exposure to 10 nm illumination bands induced a loss in cell viability with a dose dependence upon A2E concentrations. Irrespective of A2E concentration, the loss of cell viability was maximal for wavelengths from 415 to 455 nm. Cell viability decrease was correlated to an increase in cell apoptosis indicated by caspase-3/7 activities in the same spectral range. No light-elicited necrosis was measured as compared to control cells maintained in darkness. Our results defined the precise spectrum of light retinal toxicity in physiological irradiance conditions on an in vitro model of age-related macular degeneration. Surprisingly, a narrow bandwidth in blue light generated the greatest phototoxic risk to retinal pigment epithelium cells. This phototoxic spectrum may be advantageously valued in designing selective photoprotection ophthalmic filters, without disrupting essential visual and non-visual functions of the eye.

Field experiments were conducted in southwest Spain for three consecutive years from 2000 to 2003 to evaluate the effectiveness of solarization and Trichoderma spp., alone and combined, in reducing Phytophthora cactorum soil populations and consequently leather rot on fruit of strawberry plants. Plots (12.5 by 3.3 m), never treated with methyl bromide, were naturally infested by P. cactorum. Solarization was conducted during the summer, using clear 50-µm low-density polyethylene mulch. Trichoderma spp. were applied via drip and dip, adding to the soil 7 days before planting (10 8 conidia/m 2 ), and strawberry roots were dipped in a suspension of Trichoderma spp. (10 6 conidia/ml) prior to planting. Solarization reduced the soil P. cactorum population 100% in year 1, 47% in year 2, and 55% in year 3 relative to the untreated control. Trichoderma spp. applications reduced soil populations of P. cactorum and reduced leather rot incidence 76.6% in year 1 and 33.8% in year 2 compared with the untreated control. The combination of solarization and Trichoderma spp. reduced P. cactorum soil population the most each year, 88.9% in January 2001, 97.6% in 2002, and 99.0% in 2003. The very promising effect of Trichoderma spp. and solarization against P. cactorum indicates that there may be future alternatives to traditional chemicals for disease control.

Atmospheric concentrations of Sphaerotheca macularis conidia were monitored for 2 years on a strawberry crop in Huelva (southwestern Spain). The presence of airborne conidia was determined to assess the role of weather conditions on conidial release. The relationship between airborne conidia and incidence of powdery mildew on fruit was also studied. Concentrations of conidia were estimated with a Burkard volumetric spore sampler. The presence of conidia was related to temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall, with a positive correlation for the first factor and a negative correlation with the other two. The presence of conidia in the air was positively correlated with disease incidence. A diurnal pattern of conidia release was observed.

Very little is known about the molecular mechanisms supporting living cell membrane electropermeabilization. This concept is based on the local membrane permeability induced by cell exposure to brief and intense external electric field pulses. During the electric field application, an electro-induced membrane electric potential difference is created that is locally associated with the dielectric properties of the plasma membrane. When the new membrane electric potential difference locally reaches a critical value, a local alteration of the membrane structure is induced and leads to reversible permeabilization. In our study, we attempted to determine whether mechanical tension could modulate the triggering of membrane electropermeabilization. Change in lateral tension of Chinese Hamster Ovary cell membrane has been osmotically induced. Cell electropermeabilization was performed in the minute time range after the osmotic stress, i.e., before the regulatory volume decrease being activated by the cell. Living cell electropermeabilization was analyzed on cell population using flow cytometry. We observed that electropermeabilization triggering was significantly facilitated when the lateral membrane tension was increased. The main conclusion is that the critical value of transmembrane potential needed to trigger membrane electropermeabilization, is smaller when the membrane is under lateral mechanical constraint. This supports the hypothesis that both mechanical and electrical constraints play a key role in transient membrane destabilization.

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a widely used and precise technique for non-invasive assessment of bone mineral density. The DXA systems have evolved from pencil X-ray beam (single detector) to fan beam (linear array detector) and recently cone beam densitometers (bi-dimensional detector), allowing for an examination to occur without any scanning and with a short acquisition time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient and staff dose from a new cone beam densitometer, the DMS Lexxos. Measurements were performed on a DMS Lexxos bone densitometer prototype. An anthropomorphic phantom and thermoluminescent dosimeters were used to evaluate the effective dose. Ionization chambers and electronic personal dosimeters were used to evaluate the staff dose. The effective dose is 8.4 micro Sv for an anteroposterior spine examination and 4.8 micro Sv for a femoral neck in standard mode. The averaged scattered dose rate (ambient dose equivalent) at 1 m from the beam is evaluated at 226 micro Sv/h. Assuming six patients per hour with two views per patient, the time averaged dose rate is evaluated at 2.9 micro Sv/h. By the personal dosimeter, the staff dose (Hp 10) at 1 m from the beam is evaluated at 0.23 micro Sv per examination. For one examination, patient and staff dose from this new technology remains low: in the same range as the fan-beam densitometer.

Leaf rust was first observed in 1997 on southern high-bush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cvs. Sharpblue, Gulfcoast, and Misty, in two production fields in Huelva Province of Andalucía, in southwestern Spain. Depending on environmental conditions, these cultivars may remain evergreen in this region. In early spring, when the temperature reaches 20°C, typical yellowish-orange pustules first appear on the abaxial side of older leaves and later on new leaves. Leaf lesions began as chlorotic dots and developed into necrotic spots. As much as 85% of the fruits on symptomatic bushes showed pustules on the scar area. Multiple infection cycles were possible during the growing season as urediniospores reinfect leaves at the end of summer. Disease was considered of minor importance, but defoliation occurred when spotting was severe. Urediniospores were yellowish-orange, abovoid to elliptical (15 to 26 × 10 to 20 μm), with a thick, slightly roughened wall and a central pore. Telia formed in the lower epidermis and were smooth and brown. Teliospores (7 to 10 × 12 to 15 μm) were sessile, oblong to columnar, with two or more cross walls. Urediniospore and teliospore dimensions and morphology agree with the description of P. vaccinii, (G. Wint.) (1). A pathogenicity test was carried out with 2-year-old 'Sharpblue' and 'Star' plants. Expanded leaves were sprayed with freshly collected urediniospores suspended in a 0.05% solution of Tween 20 in water; plants were covered with plastic bags for 48 h and held in a chamber at 20 to 25°C in the shade. After 10 days, yellowish-orange pustules, similar to the original symptoms, developed on 80% of inoculated leaves of 'Sharpblue', while 'Star' plants remained symptomless. Leaf rust has not been reported on Ericaceae in Spain. The evergreen state of some southern high-bush cultivars in this area could allow the pathogen to overwinter as urediniospores. Crown rot of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. Camarosa) was observed in three and two production fields in 2000 and 2001, respectively, in Huelva, southwestern Andalucia, Spain. Affected plants did not exhibit typical symptoms of red stele. Instead, there was an internal red-brown discoloration of the upper crown, a bluish discoloration of leaves, and the plants were wilted. Eventually, plants collapsed and died. Fungi were isolated from surface-disinfested necrotic crown tissue on P 5 ARPH medium (1). Plates were placed at 21°C for 5 to 10 days. One species was isolated consistently from symptomatic tissue. Microscopic observations revealed spherical oogonia with thin walls. Antheridia were paragynous and were attached to the oogonium near the oogonial stalk. Single oospores were spherical and had double-layered, yellow-brown walls (20 to 25 μm in diameter). Sporangia were usually borne terminally and were colorless and papillate (22 to 30 μm in diameter). Based on these characteristics, the causal agent was identified as Phytophthora cactorum (Lebert & Cohn) J. Schröt. (2). The fungus was transferred to V8 juice agar and maintained at 21°C in the dark. Disks (9-mm diameter) were removed from 7-day-old cultures of P. cactoru and used to inoculate five 2-month-old 'Camarosa' strawberry plants grown in sterilized peat in the greenhouse. Three disks were placed in the crown of each plant at soil level. Five noninoculated plants were similarly treated with sterile V8 juice agar disks only. After 2 weeks, the pathogen was reisolated from red-brown lesions visible on crowns of all inoculated plants. Noninoculated plants did not show any symptoms. In February 2001, in seven small tunnel production fields in southwestern Spain, symptoms and signs of powdery mildew were detected on strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) cvs. Camarosa, Andana, and Carisma. On 'Camarosa' plants, white patches of mycelium developed on the lower leaf surface. Later, the leaf edges rolled upward, and reddish or necrotic irregular spots appeared on the lower leaf surface. Some immature fruits were abnormally hard and covered with a dense white mycelium. Symptoms were much less severe on 'Andana' and 'Carisma'. Microscopic observations revealed conidia in chains, ellipsoidal to barrel-shaped, with fibrosin granules. Mean dimensions of conidia (N= 70) were 31.2 μm ± 2.8 × 20.39 μm ± 4.1. Cleistothecia were not detected. Based on these characteristics, the causal agent was identified as Sphaerotheca macularis (Wallr.:Fr.) Lind. (1). Pathogenicity was confirmed by inoculating leaves of 2-month-old potted 'Camarosa' plants. S. macularis obtained from field-grown plants was maintained on 'Camarosa' strawberry leaves in a growth chamber (20°C and 100% relative humidity). Inoculum was obtained from freshly sporulating infected leaves 11 days after inoculation. Conidia of S. macularis were gently brushed into 100-ml distilled water containing two drops of Tween 20. Ten strawberry 'Camarosa' plants were inoculated by misting with a conidial suspension (10 4 conidia per ml) (2). The plants were incubated at 100% relative humidity for 48 h in the greenhouse (15 to 25°C). Colonies of powdery mildew were observed on leaves after 18 days. An anthracnose disease was observed affecting leaves of high-bush blueberry plants (Vaccinium corymbosum L. 'Sharpblue') in small areas within two production fields in Huelva Province of Andalucía, in southwestern Spain. The first symptoms observed in late spring were circular, necrotic lesions, red to salmon in color, and ranging from 3 to 20 mm in diameter. Later, lesions became salmon colored in the center with a brilliant red halo. Fungal isolations were made from the lesions. Infected tissues were surface-disinfected in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, blotted dry on sterile filter paper, and plated on 2% water agar. The plates were incubated at 25°C for 5 to 10 days. Fungal colonies isolated from the tissues were transferred to potato dextrose yeast agar (PDYA). Only one fungal species was consistently isolated from affected leaf tissues and was identified as Colletotrichum acutatum J.H. Simmonds based on morphological characteristics (2) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (1). Colonies of the fungus on PDYA showed a white-to-gray dense mycelium covered with salmon-colored spore masses. The reverse of the plates was a pink-salmon color. Colony diameter on PDYA averaged 50 mm after 7 days at 25°C. Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, fusiform to cylindrical, and 12.5 × 3.2 μm. Inoculation of leaves and fruits of blueberry cv. Misty with a conidial suspension (10 6 conidia per ml) of C. acutatum produced lesions on the leaves and fruits similar to those observed on diseased plants in the field. The pathogen was isolated from lesions on inoculated plants. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. acutatum in high-bush blueberry plants in Spain. References: (1) T. A. Cooke et al.
