Phase transitions occurring in nonequilibrium conditions can evolve through high-energy intermediate states inaccessible via equilibrium adiabatic conditions. Because of the subtle nature of such hidden phases, their direct observation is extremely challenging and requires simultaneous visualization of matter at subpicoseconds and subpicometer scales. Here, we show that a magnetite crystal in the vicinity of its metal-to-insulator transition evolves through different hidden states when controlled via energy-tuned ultrashort laser pulses. By directly monitoring magnetite's crystal structure with ultrafast electron diffraction, we found that upon near-infrared (800 nm) excitation, the trimeron charge/orbital ordering pattern is destroyed in favor of a phase-separated state made of cubic-metallic and monoclinic-insulating regions. On the contrary, visible light (400 nm) activates a photodoping charge transfer process that further promotes the long-range order of the trimerons by stabilizing the charge density wave fluctuations, leading to the reinforcement of the monoclinic insulating phase. Our results demonstrate that magnetite's structure can evolve through completely different metastable hidden phases that can be reached long after the initial excitation has relaxed, breaking ground for a protocol to control emergent properties of matter., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

Introduction: Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML) and Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are increasingly represented in the general population. We propose a screening strategy based on algorithms calculated from quantitative and analytical data from the XN analyser., Materials and Methods: We tested the performance of previously published MDS and CMML scores on an evaluation cohort of 749 individual eligible patients over 50 years of age. These patients were classified into 3 groups as follows: 713 patients without MDS or CMML, 18 patients with MDS, and finally 18 patients with CMML. In a second step, a routine cohort of 37 828 samples was studied to evaluate the impact of this approach., Results: The concordance rate between cytology and the two scores is 92.1%. The sensitivity and specificity of the CMML score are 100% and 96.2%, respectively. For the MDS score, they are 83.3% and 89.6% respectively. The ratio of platelets measured by fluorescence on board (PLT-F) as reflex tests generated is 1.5% after 6 months. The additional smear ratio for suspected MDS is calculated at 0.6%., Conclusion: We propose a flowchart using embedded artificial intelligence to help the cytologist in an optimized smear review and thus improve guidance to the clinician and the patients in the diagnosis process. The time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) allows for direct mapping of the electronic band structure and its dynamic response on femtosecond timescales. Here, we present a new ARPES system, powered by a new fiber-based femtosecond light source in the vacuum ultraviolet range, accessing the complete first Brillouin zone for most materials. We present trARPES data on Au(111), polycrystalline Au, Bi2Se3, and TaTe2, demonstrating an energy resolution of 21 meV with a time resolution of <360 fs, at a high repetition rate of 1 MHz. The system is integrated with an extreme ultraviolet high harmonic generation beamline, enabling an excellent tunability of the time-bandwidth resolution., (© 2024 Author(s). Using sound velocity and attenuation measurements in high magnetic fields, we identify a new transition in the vortex lattice state of La&#95;{2-x}Sr&#95;{x}CuO&#95;{4}. The transition, observed in magnetic fields exceeding 35 T and temperatures far below zero field T&#95;{c}, is detected in the compression modulus of the vortex lattice, at a doping level of x=p=0.17. Our theoretical analysis based on Eilenberger's theory of the vortex lattice shows that the transition corresponds to the long-sought 45° rotation of the square vortex lattice, predicted to occur in d-wave superconductors near a van Hove singularity.

Multilayered cuprates possess not only the highest superconducting temperature transition but also offer a unique platform to study disorder-free CuO 2 planes and the interplay between competing orders with superconductivity. Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 8+δ and we report quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up to 88 T. A careful analysis of the complex spectra of quantum oscillations strongly supports the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order in the inner plane and a charge order in the outer planes. The presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic metallic state that extends deep in the superconducting phase is a key ingredient that supports magnetically mediated pairing interaction in cuprates., (© 2022. Establishing the presence and the nature of a quantum critical point in their phase diagram is a central enigma of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. It could explain their pseudogap and strange metal phases, and ultimately their high superconducting temperatures. Yet, while solid evidences exist in several unconventional superconductors of ubiquitous critical fluctuations associated to a quantum critical point, in the cuprates they remain undetected until now. Here using symmetry-resolved electronic Raman scattering in the cuprate [Formula: see text], we report the observation of enhanced electronic nematic fluctuations near the endpoint of the pseudogap phase. While our data hint at the possible presence of an incipient nematic quantum critical point, the doping dependence of the nematic fluctuations deviates significantly from a canonical quantum critical scenario. The observed nematic instability rather appears to be tied to the presence of a van Hove singularity in the band structure.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) places great demands on spatial accuracy. Steel BBs used as markers in quality assurance (QA) phantoms are clearly visible in MV and planar kV images, but artifacts compromise cone-beam CT (CBCT) isocenter localization. The purpose of this work was to develop a QA phantom for measuring with sub-mm accuracy isocenter congruence of planar kV, MV, and CBCT imaging systems and to design a practical QA procedure that includes daily Winston-Lutz (WL) tests and does not require computer aid. The salient feature of the phantom (Universal Alignment Ball (UAB)) is a novel marker for precisely localizing isocenters of CBCT, planar kV, and MV beams. It consists of a 25.4mm diameter sphere of polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) containing a concentric 6.35mm diameter tungsten carbide ball. The large density difference between PMMA and the polystyrene foam in which the PMMA sphere is embedded yields a sharp image of the sphere for accurate CBCT registration. The tungsten carbide ball serves in finding isocenter in planar kV and MV images and in doing WL tests. With the aid of the UAB, CBCT isocenter was located within 0.10 ± 0.05 mm of its true positon, and MV isocenter was pinpointed in planar images to within 0.06 ± 0.04mm. In clinical morning QA tests extending over an 18 months period the UAB consistently yielded measurements with sub-mm accuracy. The average distance between isocenter defined by orthogonal kV images and CBCT measured 0.16 ± 0.12 mm. In WL tests the central ray of anterior beams defined by a 1.5 × 1.5 cm2 MLC field agreed with CBCT isocenter within 0.03 ± 0.14 mm in the lateral direction and within 0.10 ± 0.19 mm in the longitudinal direction. Lateral MV beams approached CBCT isocenter within 0.00 ± 0.11 mm in the vertical direction and within -0.14 ± 0.15 mm longitudinally. It took therapists about 10 min to do the tests. The novel QA phantom allows pinpointing CBCT and MV isocenter positions to better than 0.2 mm, using visual image registration. We report a fine tuned doping study of strongly overdoped Bi&#95;{2}Sr&#95;{2}CaCu&#95;{2}O&#95;{8+δ} single crystals using electronic Raman scattering. Combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the doping, at which the normal-state pseudogap closes, coincides with a Lifshitz quantum phase transition where the active holelike Fermi surface becomes electronlike. This conclusion suggests that the microscopic cause of the pseudogap is sensitive to the Fermi surface topology. Furthermore, we find that the superconducting transition temperature is unaffected by this transition, demonstrating that their origins are different on the overdoped side.

Purpose: Spatial accuracy is most crucial when small targets like the trigeminal nerve are treated. Although current quality assurance procedures typically verify that individual apparatus, like the MRI scanner, CT scanner, Gamma Knife, etc., are meeting specifications, the cumulative error of all equipment and procedures combined may exceed safe margins. This study uses an end-to-end approach to assess the overall targeting errors that may have occurred in individual patients previously treated for trigeminal neuralgia., Methods: The trigeminal nerve is simulated by a 3 mm long, 3.175 mm (1/8 in.) diameter MRI-contrast filled cavity embedded within a PMMA plastic capsule. The capsule is positioned within the head frame such that the location of the cavity matches the Gamma Knife coordinates of an arbitrarily chosen, previously treated patient. Gafchromic EBT2 film is placed at the center of the cavity in coronal and sagittal orientations. The films are marked with a pinprick to identify the cavity center. Treatments are planned for radiation delivery with 4 mm collimators according to MRI and CT scans using the clinical localizer boxes and acquisition protocols. Shots are planned so that the 50% isodose surface encompasses the cavity. Following irradiation, the films are scanned and analyzed. Targeting errors are defined as the distance between the pinprick, which represents the intended target, and the centroid of the 50% isodose line, which is the center of the radiation field that was actually delivered., Results: Averaged over ten patient simulations, targeting errors along the x, y, and z coordinates (patient's left-to-right, posterior-to-anterior, and head-to-foot) were, respectively, -0.060 ± 0.363, -0.350 ± 0.253, and 0.348 ± 0.204 mm when MRI was used for treatment planning. Planning according to CT exhibited generally smaller errors, namely, 0.109 ± 0.167, -0.191 ± 0.144, and 0.211 ± 0.094 mm. The largest errors along individual axes in MRI- and CT-planned treatments were, respectively, -0.761 mm in the y-direction and 0.428 mm in the x-direction, well within safe limits., Conclusions: The highly accurate dose delivery was possible because the Gamma Knife, MRI scanner, and other equipment performed within tight limits and scans were acquired using the thinnest slices and smallest pixel sizes available. Had the individual devices performed only near the limits of their specifications, the cumulative error could have left parts of the trigeminal nerve undertreated. The presented end-to-end test gives assurance that patients had received the expected high quality treatment. End-to-end tests should become part of clinical practice.

Four 16 cm diameter spherical phantoms were modeled in this study: a homogenous water phantom, and three water phantoms with 1 cm thick shell each made of different materials (PMMA, Plastic WaterTM and polystyrene). The PENELOPE Monte Carlo code was utilized to simulate photon beams from the Leksell Gamma Knife (LGK) unit and to determine absorbed dose to water (Dw) from a single 18 mm beam delivered to each phantom. A score spherical volume of 0.007 cm3 was used to simulate the dimensions of the sensitive volume of the Exradin A-16 ionization chamber, in the center of the phantom. In conclusion, the PMMA shell filled with water required a small correction for the determination of the absorbed dose, while remaining within the statistical uncertainty of the calculations (+/- 0.71). Plastic WaterTM and polystyrene shells can be used without correction. There is a potential advantage to measuring the 4 mm helmet output using these spherical water phantoms.

A ring-shaped Fricke device was developed to measure the absolute dose on the transverse bisector of a 192Ir high dose rate (HDR) source at 1 cm from its center in water, D(r0, theta0). It consists of a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) rod (axial axis) with a cylindrical cavity at its center to insert the 192Ir radioactive source. A ring cavity around the source with 1.5 mm thickness and 5 mm height is centered at 1 cm from the central axis of the source. This ring cavity is etched in a disk shaped base with 2.65 cm diameter and 0.90 cm thickness. The cavity has a wall around it 0.25 cm thick. This ring is filled with Fricke solution, sealed, and the whole assembly is immersed in water during irradiations. The device takes advantage of the cylindrical geometry to measure D(r0, theta0). Irradiations were performed with a Nucletron microselectron HDR unit loaded with an 192Ir Alpha Omega radioactive source. A Spectronic 1001 spectrophotometer was used to measure the optical absorbance using a 1 mL quartz cuvette with 1.00 cm light pathlength. The PENELOPE Monte Carlo code (MC) was utilized to simulate the Fricke device and the 192Ir Alpha Omega source in detail to calculate the perturbation introduced by the PMMA material. A NIST traceable calibrated well type ionization chamber was used to determine the air-kerma strength, and a published dose-rate constant was used to determine the dose rate at the reference point. The time to deliver 30.00 Gy to the reference point was calculated. This absorbed dose was then compared to the absorbed dose measured by the Fricke solution. Based on MC simulation, the PMMA of the Fricke device increases the D(r0, theta0) by 2.0%. Applying the corresponding correction factor, the D(r0, theta0) value assessed with the Fricke device agrees within 2.0% with the expected value with a total combined uncertainty of 3.43% (k=1). The Fricke device provides a promising method towards calibration of brachytherapy radiation sources in terms of D(r0, theta0) and audit HDR source calibrations.
