The advent of high-performance virtual screening techniques nowadays allows drug designers to explore ultra-large sets of candidate compounds in search of molecules predicted to have desired properties. However, the success of such an endeavor heavily relies on the pertinence (drug-likeness and, foremost, chemical feasibility) of these candidates, or otherwise, virtual screening will return valueless "hits", by the garbage in/garbage out principle. The huge popularity of the judiciously enumerated Enamine REAL Space is clear proof of the strength of this Big Data trend in drug discovery. Here we describe a new dataset of make-on-demand compounds called the Freedom space. It follows the principles of Enamine REAL Space and contains highly feasible molecules (synthesis success rate over 75 percent). However, the scaffold and chemography analysis revealed significant differences to both the REAL and biologically annotated compounds from the ChEMBL database. Deuteration of amine compounds has been widely of concern because of its practical role in organic reaction mechanisms and drug research; however, only limited deuteration label methods are accessible with D 2 O as a deuterium source. Herein, we propose a convenient deuteration protocol, including preparing D 2 by the AlGa activation method, using PtRu nanowires as catalysts, and utilizing the elementary step in the couple reaction involving an imine unit, to realize the rapid preparation of a secondary amine with a diversified deuteration label. The self-coupling between nitriles not only provides a symmetric secondary amine with four α-D atoms but also produces high-valued ND 3 in an atomic-economic way.

This work explores strategies for electrokinetic preconcentration of extracellular vesicles (EVs) that are potential source of biomarkers for different diseases. The first approach that led to successful preconcentration of EVs is based on large volume sample stacking (LVSS), allowing an enrichment factor of 7 for CE of EVs with long-end injection (using a capillary with an effective length of 50 cm). Attempts were also made to perform multiple cycles of LVSS, field amplified sample stacking (FASS) and field amplified sample injection (FASI), to improve EVs preconcentration performance. The focus was then put on development of capillary isotachophoresis under high ionic strengths (IS) for electrokinetic enrichment of slow migrating EVs having heterogeneous mobilities. This approach relies on the use of extremely high concentrations of the terminating electrolyte (TE) to slow down the mobility of TE co-ions, rendering them slower than those of EVs. The limit of detection for intact EVs using the developed ITP-UV method reached 8.3 × 10 8 EVs/mL, allowing an enrichment of 25 folds and a linear calibration up to 4 × 10 10 EVs/mL. The ITP-UV and ITP-LIF approaches were applied to provide the electrokinetic signature of EVs of bovine milk and human plasma as well as to visualize more specifically intravesicular fluorescently labelled EVs. Organofluorines have a broad range of industrial applications, such as pharmaceuticals, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), solar cells, textiles, and construction coatings, and are used in peptidomimetics, surfactants, refrigerants, anesthetics, and agrochemicals. Among them are versatile monofluoroalkenes that play a crucial role in medicinal and synthetic chemistry. The synthetic strategies for this class of molecules are limited, and prior efforts frequently suffered from poor atom- and step-economies. As a surrogate pathway for traditional cross-coupling transformations, transition metal (TM)-catalyzed C-H direct α-fluoroalkenylation overcomes these obstacles and provides straightforward techniques to access monofluoroalkenes. Nevertheless, substrate scope is still a challenge for catalysis, where gem -bromofluoroalkene synthons are applicable with electronically biased substrates such as azoles, while gem -difluoroalkene-based strategies are limited to substrates containing N-based directing groups. Herein, we review the cutting-edge fluoroalkenylation research for direct synthesis of monofluoroalkenes achieved during the last decade (2013-2023). This review is divided into two main parts: the first part discusses TM-catalyzed direct α-fluoroalkenylation via the merging of C-H activation and C(sp 2 )-Br cleavage strategies using gem -bromofluoroalkenes, and the second part describes the same reaction, albeit with C(sp 2 )-F cleavage of highly explored gem -difluoroolefins. Our review surveys all previously reported monofluoroalkenes in this research area, including their preparation techniques, stereoselectivity, and yield percentages. Furthermore, optimal conditions, reactant scope, mechanistic investigations, synthetic applications, benefits, and drawbacks of each presented methodology are critically discussed.

Chemically fueled chemical reaction networks (CRNs) are essential in controlling dissipative self-assembly. A key challenge in the field is to store chemical fuel-precursors or "pre-fuels" in the system that are converted into activating or deactivating fuels in a catalytically controlled CRN. In addition, real-time control over catalysis in a CRN by light is highly desirable, but so far not yet achieved. Here we show a catalytically driven CRN that is photoinitiated with 450 nm light, producing activated monomers that go on to perform transient self-assembly. Monomer activation proceeds via photoredox catalysis, converting the monomer alcohol groups into the corresponding aldehydes that self-assemble into large supramolecular fibers. Monomer deactivation is achieved by organometallic catalysis that relies on pre-fuel hydrolysis to release formate (i.e. the deactivating fuel). Additionally, irradiation with 305 nm light accelerates the release of formate by photo-uncaging the pre-fuel, leading to a factor of ca. 2 faster deactivation of the monomer. We explore Riemannian optimization methods for Restricted-Open-shell Hartree-Fock (ROHF) and Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) methods. After showing that ROHF and CASSCF can be reformulated as optimization problems on so-called "flag manifolds", we review Riemannian optimization basics and their application to these specific problems. We compare these methods to traditional ones and find robust convergence properties without fine-tuning of numerical parameters. Our study suggests that Riemannian optimization is a valuable addition to orbital optimization for ROHF and CASSCF, warranting further investigation.

Cholesterol is a major component of plasma membranes and plays a significant role in actively regulating the functioning of several membrane proteins in humans. In this study, we focus on the role of cholesterol depletion on the voltage-gated sodium channel Na v 1.7, which is primarily expressed in the peripheral sensory neurons and linked to various chronic inherited pain syndromes. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations revealed key dynamic changes of Na v 1.7 upon membrane cholesterol depletion: A loss of rigidity in the structural motifs linked to activation and fast-inactivation is observed, suggesting an easier transition of the channel between different gating states. In-vitro whole-cell patch clamp experiments on HEK293t cells expressing Na v 1.7 validated these predictions at the functional level: Hyperpolarizing shifts in the voltage-dependence of activation and fast-inactivation were observed along with an acceleration of the time to peak and onset kinetics of fast inactivation. These results underline the critical role of membrane composition, and of cholesterol in particular, in influencing Na v 1.7 gating characteristics. Protonated and methylated bis-acridinium tweezers built around a 2,6-diphenylpyridyl and an electron enriched 2,6-di(p-anisyl)pyridyl spacer have been synthesized. These tweezers can self-assemble in their corresponding homodimers and the associated thermodynamic parameters have been probed in organic solvents. The switching properties of the tweezers have been exploited in biphasic transfer experiments showing the shift of the equilibria towards the homodimers. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters of the formation of the reduced methylated homodimers investigated by electrochemical experiments revealed the dissociation of the dimers. Thus, in addition to solvent and temperature, the pH and redox responsiveness of the acridinium units of the tweezers make it possible to modulate to a larger extent the monomer-dimer equilibria., (© 2024 The Authors. A method for the construction of trifluorinated-5-methylenepyrrolidinone is reported. This strategy combines an acid-catalyzed two-carbon homologation process between ynamides and aldehydes, providing CF 3 -substituted dienes followed by a metal-free domino hydroamination/isomerization/transamidation sequence, delivering trifluorinated-5-methylenepyrrolidinone stereoselectively.

Objectives: To explore the risk factors for dental caries (DC) and tooth wear (TW) and assess their importance according to age in random French adult patients with >1 partial coronal restoration., Methods: The data stem from a prospective observational multicentre cross-sectional study and were collected through interviews and clinical examinations. The study involved 96 dentists from 76 hospital and private clinics and included 822 patients. The data analysed in three age groups (18-29, 30-59, and ≥ 60). Univariate logistic regressions were performed and predictions of DC or TW described using decision trees., Results: The study confirmed the major influences of oral hygiene, acceptable sugary/acidic beverage consumption and regular dental visits in reducing DC and TW. Further, it exposed age-related risk factors for DC such being a "new patient" and having an "excessive sugary/acidic beverage consumption" in the youngest adults, or "irregular dental visits" in middle-aged adults and in the oldest., Conclusions: For appropriate preventive counselling, risk factor assessment should be extensive and age- and dental history-oriented because of unexpected age-related risk factors or risk factor combinations., Clinical Significance: These results are likely to make better-grounded new recommendations given to young adults since their first visits and throughout their dental clinical pathway., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest This study was promoted by Hospices Civils de Lyon (Lyon, France). The ability of triaryltelluronium salts to interact with N-halosuccinimides (NXS) through chalcogen bonding (ChB) in the solid state and in solution is demonstrated herein. Cocrystals of the triaryltelluronium bearing two CF 3 electron-withdrawing groups per aryl ring with N-chloro-, N-bromo- and N-iodosuccinimide (respectively NCS, NBS and NIS) were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, evidencing a ChB between tellurium and the carbonyl group of NXS. This ChB was confirmed in solution by NMR spectroscopy, especially by 125 Te NMR titration experiment, which allowed the determination of the association constant (K a ) between the telluronium and NBS. The so-obtained K a value of 17.3±0.6 M -1 indicated a moderate interaction in solution because of the competitive role of the solvent. The strength of the Te⋅⋅⋅O ChB was however sufficient enough to promote the catalytic halofunctionalization of aromatics and of alkenes such as the intra- and intermolecular haloalkoxylation and haloesterification of alkenes., (© 2024 The Authors. Chiral 1D tin iodides EBASnI 3 were synthesized while incorporating enantiomerically pure and racemic ethylbenzylammonium (EBA) cations between the 1D shared inorganic corners. The dimensionality was reduced to 0D when replacing iodine with bromine. In all the cases, the presence of hydrogen bonds was observed between the organic part and the inorganic part, while transfer of chirality was evidenced for the EBASnI 3 enantiomerically pure compounds.

Herein, initially, we present a general overview of the global financial support for chemistry devoted to materials science, specifically intercalation layered compounds (ILCs). Subsequently, the strategies to synthesise these host structures and the corresponding guest-host hybrid assemblies are exemplified on the basis of some families of materials, including pillared clays (PILCs), porous clay heterostructures (PCHs), zirconium phosphate (ZrP), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), graphene-based materials, and MXenes. Additionally, a non-exhaustive survey on their possible application in the field of energy through electrochemical storage, mostly as electrode materials but also as electrolyte additives, is presented, including lithium technologies based on lithium ion batteries (LIBs), and beyond LiBs with a focus on possible alternatives such XIBs (X = Na (NIB), K (KIB), Al (AIB), Zn (ZIB), and Cl (CIB)), reversible Mg batteries (RMBs), dual-ion batteries (DIBs), Zn-air and Zn-sulphur batteries and supercapacitors as well as their relevance in other fields related to (opto)electronics. This selective panorama should help readers better understand the reason why ILCs are expected to meet the challenge of tomorrow as electrode materials.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that significantly contributes to dementia. The lack of effective therapeutic interventions presents a significant challenge to global health. We have developed a set of short peptides (PN Gln ) conjugated with a dual-functional fluorophoric amino acid (N Gln ). The lead peptide, P2N Gln , displays a high affinity for Cu 2+ , maintaining the metal ion in a redox-inactive state. This mitigates the cytotoxicity generated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are produced by Cu 2+ under the reductive conditions of Asc and Aβ 16 or Aβ 42 . Furthermore, P2N Gln inhibits both Cu-dependent and -independent fibrillation of Aβ 42 , along with the subsequent toxicity induced by Aβ 42 . In addition, P2N Gln exhibits inhibitory effects on the production of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in microglial cells. A diradical with engineered g-asymmetry was synthesized by grafting a nitroxide radical onto the [Y(Pc) 2 ]⋅ radical platform. Various spectroscopic techniques and computational studies revealed that the electronic structures of the two spin systems remained minimally affected within the diradical system. Fluid-solution Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) experiments revealed a weak exchange coupling with |J| ~ 0.014 cm -1 , subsequently rationalized by CAS-SCF calculations. Frozen solution continuous-wave (CW) EPR experiments showed a complicated and power-dependent spectrum that eluded analysis using the point-dipole model. Pulse EPR manipulations with varying microwave powers, or under varying magnetic fields, demonstrated that different resonances could be selectively enhanced or suppressed, based on their different tipping angles. In particular, Field-Swept Echo-Detected (FSED) spectra revealed absorptions of MW power-dependent intensities, while Field-Swept Spin Nutation (FSSN) experiments revealed two distinct Rabi frequencies. Intercalation compounds represent a unique class of materials that can be anisotropic (1D and 2D-based topology) or isotropic (3D) through their guest/host superlattice repetitive organisation. Intercalation refers to the reversible introduction of guest species with variable natures into a crystalline host lattice. Different host lattice structures have been used for the preparation of intercalation compounds, and many examples are produced by exploiting the flexibility and the ability of 2D-based hosts to accommodate different guest species, ranging from ions to complex molecules. This reaction is then carried out to allow systematic control and fine tuning of the final properties of the derived compounds, thus allowing them to be used for various applications. This review mainly focuses on the recent applications of intercalation layered compounds (ILCs) based on layered clays, zirconium phosphates, layered double hydroxides and graphene as heterogeneous catalysts, for environmental and health purposes, aiming at collecting and discussing how intercalation processes can be exploited for the selected applications.

The engineering of non ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS) for new substrate specificity is a potent strategy to incorporate non-canonical amino acids into peptide sequences, thereby creating peptide diversity and broadening applications. The non-ribosomal peptide pyoverdine is the primary siderophore produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and holds biomedical promise in diagnosis, bio-imaging and antibiotic vectorization. We engineered the adenylation domain of PvdD, the terminal NRPS in pyoverdine biosynthesis, to accept a functionalized amino acid. Guided by molecular modeling, we rationally designed mutants of P. aeruginosa with mutations at two positions in the active site. A single amino acid change results in the successful incorporation of an azido-L-homoalanine leading to the synthesis of a new pyoverdine analog, functionalized with an azide function. We further demonstrated that copper free click chemistry is efficient on the functionalized pyoverdine and that the conjugated siderophore retains the iron chelation properties and its capacity to be recognized and transported by P. aeruginosa. The widely used Laurdan probe has two conformers, resulting in different optical properties when embedded in a lipid bilayer membrane, as demonstrated by our previous simulations. Up to now, the two conformers' optical responses have, however, not been investigated when the temperature and the phase of the membrane change. Since Laurdan is known to be both a molecular rotor and a solvatochromic probe, it is subject to a profound interaction with both neighboring lipids and water molecules. In the current study, molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics calculations are performed for a DPPC membrane at eight temperatures between 270K and 320K, while the position, orientation, fluorescence lifetime and fluorescence anisotropy of the embedded probes are monitored. The importance of both conformers is proven through a stringent comparison with experiments, which corroborates the theoretical findings. It is seen that for Conf-I, the excited state lifetime is longer than the relaxation of the environment, while for Conf-II, the surroundings are not yet adapted when the probe returns to the ground state. Throughout the temperature range, the lifetime and anisotropy decay curves can be used to identify the different membrane phases. The current work might, therefore, be of importance for biomedical studies on diseases, which are associated with cell membrane transformations.

Carbon materials have great potential for applications in energy, biology, and environment due to their excellent chemical and physical properties. Their preparation by carbonization methods encounters limitations and the carbon loss during pyrolysis in the form of gaseous molecules results in low yield of carbon materials. Herein a low-energy (600 °C) and high-yield (82 wt.%) carbonization strategy is developed using liquid gallium-assisted pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) affording the N-doped carbon nanotube (CNT) non-hollow frameworks encapsulating Co nanoparticles. The liquid gallium layer offers protection against air, promotes heat transfer, and limits the escape of small carbonaceous gaseous molecules, which greatly improve the yields of the pyrolysis reaction. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the synergistic interaction between CNTs and N/O-containing groups gives a non-hollow framework composed of N/O-enriched and open CNTs (NOCNTF-15, 15 denotes the 15 mm thickness of the liquid gallium layer during the pyrolysis) with high specific capacity (185 mAh g -1 at 10 A g -1 ) and ultra-stable cyclability (stable operation at 10 A g -1 and 50 °C for 20 000 cycles). Zwitterionic thiolate ligands have the potential to introduce novel assembly modes and functions for noble metal clusters. However, their utilization in the synthesis of silver clusters remains understudied, particularly for the clusters containing reductive Ag(0) species. In this article, we report the first synthesis of a mixed-valence silver(0/I) cluster protected by zwitterionic Tab as thiolate ligands (Tab = 4-(trimethylammonio)benzenethiolate), denoted as [Ag 22 (Tab) 24 ](PF 6 ) 20 ·16CH 3 OH·6Et 2 O ( Ag 22 ·16CH 3 OH·6Et 2 O), alongside an Ag(I) cluster [Ag 20 (Tab) 12 (PhCOO) 10 (MeCN) 2 (H 2 O)](PF 6 ) 10 ·11MeCN ( Ag 20 ·11MeCN). Ag 22 has a distinct hierarchical supratetrahedral structure with a central {Ag 6 } kernel surrounded by four [Ag 4 (Tab) 6 ] 4+ units. High-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectra demonstrate that Ag 22 has two free electrons, indicating a superatomic core. Ag 20 has a drum-like [Ag 12 (Tab) 6 (PhCOO) 6 (H 2 O)] 6+ inner core capped by two tetrahedral-like [Ag 4 (Tab) 3 (PhCOO) 2 (MeCN)] 2+ units. Ag 20 can be transformed into Ag 22 after its reaction with NaBH 4 in solution. Antibacterial measurements reveal that Ag 22 has a significantly lower minimum inhibitory concentration than that of the Ag 20 cluster. This work not only extends the stabilization of silver(0/I) clusters to neutral thiol ligands but also offers new materials for the development of novel antibacterial materials.

The controlled growth of self-assembled networks on surfaces based on viologen salts is a major scientific challenge due to their unique electronic properties. The combination of solid-state NMR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy at ambient conditions can unravel the fine organization of the supramolecular network on a graphitic surface by positioning the counter-ions relative to the viologen cation.

Coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have grown in applicability over the years. The recently released version of the Martini CG force field (Martini 3) has been successfully applied to simulate many processes, including protein-ligand binding. However, the current ligand parametrization scheme is manual and requires an a priori reference all-atom (AA) simulation for benchmarking. For systems with suboptimal AA parameters, which are often unknown, this translates into a CG model that does not reproduce the true dynamical behavior of the underlying molecule. Here, we present Bartender, a quantum mechanics (QM)/MD-based parametrization tool written in Go. Bartender harnesses the power of QM simulations and produces reasonable bonded terms for Martini 3 CG models of small molecules in an efficient and user-friendly manner. For small, ring-like molecules, Bartender generates models whose properties are indistinguishable from the human-made models. For more complex, drug-like ligands, it is able to fit functional forms beyond simple harmonic dihedrals and thus better captures their dynamical behavior. Bartender has the power to both increase the efficiency and the accuracy of Martini 3-based high-throughput applications by producing numerically stable and physically realistic CG models.

Spin-state switching in iron(II) complexes composed of ligands featuring moderate ligand-field strength-for example, 2,6-bi(1 H -pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (BPP)-is dependent on many factors. Herein, we show that spin-state switching in isomeric iron(II) complexes composed of BPP-based ligands-ethyl 2,6-bis(1 H -pyrazol-1-yl)isonicotinate (BPP-COOEt, L1) and (2,6-di(1 H -pyrazol-1-yl)pyridin-4-yl)methylacetate (BPP-CH 2 OCOMe, L2)-is dependent on the nature of the substituent at the BPP skeleton. Bi-stable spin-state switching-with a thermal hysteresis width (Δ T 1/2 ) of 44 K and switching temperature ( T 1/2 ) = 298 K in the first cycle-is observed for complex 1·CH 3 CN composed of L1 and BF 4 - counter anions. Conversely, the solvent-free isomeric counterpart of 1·CH 3 CN-complex 2a, composed of L2 and BF 4 - counter anions-was trapped in the high-spin (HS) state. For one of the polymorphs of complex 2b·CH 3 CN-2b·CH 3 CN-Y, Y denotes yellow colour of the crystals-composed of L2 and ClO 4 - counter anions, a gradual and non-hysteretic SCO is observed with T 1/2 = 234 K. Complexes 1·CH 3 CN and 2b·CH 3 CN-Y also underwent light-induced spin-state switching at 5 K due to the light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect. Structures of the low-spin (LS) and HS forms of complex 1·CH 3 CN revealed that spin-state switching goes hand-in-hand with pronounced distortion of the trans-N {pyridyl}-Fe-N{pyridyl} angle ( ϕ ), whereas such distortion is not observed for 2b·CH 3 CN-Y. This observation points that distortion is one of the factors making the spin-state switching of 1·CH 3 CN hysteretic in the solid state. The observation of bi-stable spin-state switching with T 1/2 centred at room temperature for 1·CH 3 CN indicates that technologically relevant spin-state switching profiles based on mononuclear iron(II) complexes can be obtained.

Aminoglycosides are crucial antibiotics facing challenges from bacterial resistance. This study addresses the importance of aminoglycoside modifying enzymes in the context of escalating resistance. Drawing upon over two decades of structural data in the Protein Data Bank, we focused on two key antibiotics, neomycin B and kanamycin A, to explore how the aminoglycoside structure is exploited by this family of enzymes. Creating specific noble metal/metal-organic framework (MOF) heterojunction nanostructures represents an effective strategy to promote water electrolysis but remains rather challenging. Herein, a heterojunction electrocatalyst is developed by growing Ir nanoparticles on ultrathin NiFe-MOF nanosheets supported by nickel foam (NF) via a readily accessible solvothermal approach and subsequent redox strategy. Because of the electronic interactions between Ir nanoparticles and NiFe-MOF nanosheets, the optimized Ir@NiFe-MOF/NF catalyst exhibits exceptional bifunctional performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (η 10 = 15 mV, η denotes the overpotential) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (η 10 = 213 mV) in 1.0 m KOH solution, superior to commercial and recently reported electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations are used to further investigate the electronic interactions between Ir nanoparticles and NiFe-MOF nanosheets, shedding light on the mechanisms behind the enhanced HER and OER performance. 89 Zr-immunoPET is a hot topic as 89 Zr cumulates the advantages of 64 Cu and 124 I without their drawbacks. We report the synthesis of a model ligand of a chiral bioconjugable tetrahydroxamic chelator combining the desferriferrioxamine B siderophore and 1-hydroxy-2-piperidone ((PIPO)H), a chiral cyclic hydroxamic acid derivative, and the study by NMR spectroscopy of its zirconium complex. Nuclear Overhauser effect measurements (ROESY) indicated that the complex exists in the form of two diastereomers, in 77 : 23 ratio, resulting from the combination of the central chiralities at the 3-C of the (PIPO)H component and at the Zr 4+ cation. The 44 lowest energy structures out of more than 1000 configurations/conformations returned by calculations based on density functional theory were examined. Comparison of the ROESY data and the calculated interatomic H⋅⋅⋅H distances allowed us to select the most probable configuration and conformations of the major complex., (© 2024 The Authors. Coarse-grained (CG) protein models have become indispensable tools for studying many biological protein details, from conformational dynamics to the organization of protein macro-complexes, and even the interaction of proteins with other molecules. The Martini force field is one of the most widely used CG models for bio-molecular simulations, partly because of the enormous success of its protein model. With the recent release of a new and improved version of the Martini force field - Martini 3 - a new iteration of its protein model was also made available. The Martini 3 protein force field is an evolution of its Martini 2 counterpart, aimed at improving many of the shortcomings that had been previously identified. In this mini-review, we first provide a general overview of the model and then focus on the successful advances made in the short time since its release, many of which would not have been possible before. Two diphosphanes with variable-length ligands tested as nucleophiles to prepare isoporphyrin copolymers in the presence of ditolylporphyrin of zinc (ZnT 2 P) prevented the oxidation of the diphosphine ligand. This paper demonstrates the power of this approach and describes the photoelectrocatalytic properties. The obtained copolymers were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force micrograph (AFM), EQCM (Electrochemical Quartz Cristal Microbalance) and electrochemistry. Their impedance properties (EIS) were studied and their photovoltaic performances were also investigated by photocurrent transient measurements under visible light irradiation.

Background: Cocaine craving is a central symptom of cocaine use disorders (CUD). Virtual reality cue-exposure therapy for craving (VRCET) allows more immersive, realistic, and controllable exposure than traditional non-VR cue-exposure therapy (CET), whose efficacy is limited in treating substance use disorders. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of VRCET, as a stand-alone and add-on intervention (i.e., combined with cognitive therapy), compared to a picture-based CET (PCET), in reducing self-reported cocaine craving in inpatients hospitalized for CUD., Methods: Fifty-four inpatients hospitalized for CUD will be randomized in one of two intensive 3-week treatment arms: 10 meetings/2-week treatment of VRCET plus 5 meetings/1-week treatment of memory-focused cognitive therapy (MFCT; experimental arm), or 15 meetings/3-week treatment of PCET (active control arm). The Craving Experience Questionnaire (CEQ - F & S) will be used to assess the primary outcome, i.e., the post-treatment decrease of self-reported cocaine craving frequency (within the past 2 weeks) and intensity scores (in VR exposure to cocaine cues). Secondary endpoints include urinary, physiological, and self-reported cocaine use-related measures. Assessments are scheduled at pretreatment, after 2 weeks of treatment (i.e., VRCET vs. PCET), post-treatment (3 weeks, i.e., VRCET + MFCT vs. PCET), and at 1-month follow-up. Acceptability will be evaluated via (i) the Spatial Presence for Immersive Environments - Cybersickness along VRCET and (ii) the Client Satisfaction Questionnaires after 2 weeks of treatment and post-treatment., Discussion: This study will be the first to evaluate the acceptability and efficacy of VRCET for CUD, as a psychotherapeutic add-on, to reduce both cocaine craving frequency and intensity. The chlorine radical is a strong HAT (Hydrogen Atom Transfer) agent that is very useful for the functionalization of C(sp 3 )-H bonds. Albeit highly attractive, its generation from the poorly oxidizable chloride ion mediated by an excited photoredox catalyst is a difficult task. We now report that 8R f8 -4CzIPN, an electron-deficient fluorous derivative of the benchmark 4CzIPN photoredox catalyst belonging to the donor-acceptor carbazole-cyanoarene family, is not only a better photooxidant than 4CzIPN, but also becomes an excellent host for the chloride ion. Combining these two properties ultimately makes the self-assembled 8R f8 -4CzIPN•Cl - dual catalyst highly reactive in redox-neutral Giese-type C(sp 3 )-H bond alkylation reactions promoted by the chlorine radical. In the last decade, biological processes involving halogen bond (HaB) as a leading interaction attracted great interest. However, although bound iodine atoms are considered powerful HaB donors, few iodinated new drugs were reported so far. Recently, iodinated 4,4'-bipyridines showed interesting properties as HaB donors in solution and in the solid state. In this paper, a study on the inhibition activity of seven halogenated 4,4'-bipyridines against malignant melanoma (MM) cell proliferation is described. Explorative dose/response proliferation assays were first performed with three 4,4'-bipyridines by using four MM cell lines and the normal BJ fibroblast cell line as control. Among them, the A375 MM cell line was the most sensitive, as determined by MTT assays, which was selected to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of all 4,4'-bipyridines. Significantly, the presence of an electrophilic iodine impacted the biological activity of the corresponding compounds. The 3,3',5,5'-tetrachloro-2-iodo-4,4'-bipyridine showed significant antiproliferation activity against the A375 cell line, and lower toxicity on BJ fibroblasts. Through in silico studies, the stereoelectronic features of possible sites determining the bioactivity were explored. Flavins and their alloxazine isomers are key chemical scaffolds for bioinspired electron transfer strategies. Their properties can be fine-tuned by functional groups, which must be introduced at an early stage of the synthesis as their aromatic ring is inert towards post-functionalization. We show that the introduction of a remote metal-binding redox site on alloxazine and flavin activates their aromatic ring towards direct C-H functionalization. Mechanistic studies are consistent with a synthetic sequence involving ground-state single electron transfer (SET) with an electrophilic source followed by radical-radical coupling. This unprecedented reactivity opens new opportunities in molecular editing of flavins by direct aromatic post-functionalization and the utility of the method is demonstrated with the site-selective C6 functionalization of alloxazine and flavin with a CF 3 group, Br or Cl, that can be further elaborated into OH and aryl for chemical diversification., (© 2024 The Authors. The pincer complexes [Ni II Br(CNC)]Br (4), [Cr III Br 3 (CNC)] (5 a) and [Cr III Br 2.3 Cl 0.7 (CNC)] (5 b), where CNC=3,3'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(1-mesityl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-ylidene), were obtained from the novel ligand CNC, generated in situ from the precursor (CHNCH)Br 2 and [Ni II Br 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] or from [Cr II {N(SiMe 3 ) 2 } 2 (THF) 2 ] and (CHNCH)Br 2 by aminolysis, respectively. The tetrahedrally distorted square planar (τ 4 ≅0.30) geometry and the singlet ground state of Ni in 4 were attributed to steric constraints of the CNC backbone. Computational methods highlighted the dependence of the coordination geometry and the singlet-triplet energy difference on the size of the N-substituent of the tetrahydropyrimidine wingtips and contrasted it to the situation in 5-membered imidazolin-2-ylidene pincer analogues. The octahedral Cr III metal center in 5 a and 5 b is presumably formed after one electron oxidation from CH 2 Cl 2 . 4/MAO and 5 a/MAO were catalysts of moderate activity for the oligomerization and polymerization of ethylene, respectively. The analogous (CH^N^CH)Br 2 precursor, where (CH^N^CH)=3,3'-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis(methylene))bis(1-mesityl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-1-ium), was also prepared, however its coordination chemistry was not studied due to the inherent instability of the resulting free C^N^C ligand., (© 2024 The Authors. In order to prepare self-standing and flexible slow neutron reflectors made of graphite fluoride (GF) with high contents of (C 2 F) n structural phase, graphite foils of different thicknesses were used as starting materials for gas (F 2 )/solid fluorination. The maximal interlayer distance of GF was obtained with this phase thanks to the stacking sequence FCCF/FCCF; this is mandatory for the efficient reflection of slow neutrons. 71 and 77% of the (C 2 F) n phase were achieved for graphite foils with thicknesses of 1.0 and 0.1 mm, respectively. The interlayer distances were 8.6 Å as expected. The fluorination conditions (static mode, a long duration of 24 h, annealing in pure F 2 gas for 24 h, and temperatures in the 390-460 °C range) were adapted to large pieces of graphite foils (7 × 7 cm 2 ) in order to both avoid exfoliation and achieve a homogeneous dispersion of fluorine atoms. This process was also efficient for thinner (0.01 mm thick) graphitized graphene oxide foil. 56% of the (C 2 F) n phase and an interlayer of 8.6 Å were achieved for this foil when fluorination was performed at 430 °C. Whatever the nature and the thickness of the foil, their flexibilities are maintained.

In this work, the dynamics of a quantum walker on glued trees is revisited to understand the influence of the architecture of the graph on the efficiency of the transfer between the two roots. Instead of considering regular binary trees, we focus our attention on leafier structures where each parent node could give rise to a larger number of children. Through extensive numerical simulations, we uncover a significant dependence of the transfer on the underlying graph architecture, particularly influenced by the branching rate ( M ) relative to the root degree ( N ). Our study reveals that the behavior of the walker is isomorphic to that of a particle moving on a finite-size chain. This chain exhibits defects that originate in the specific nature of both the roots and the leaves. Therefore, the energy spectrum of the chain showcases rich features, which lead to diverse regimes for the quantum-state transfer. Notably, the formation of quasi-degenerate localized states due to significant disparities between M and N triggers a localization process on the roots. Through analytical development, we demonstrate that these states play a crucial role in facilitating almost perfect quantum beats between the roots, thereby enhancing the transfer efficiency. Our findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms governing quantum-state transfer on trees, with potential applications for the transfer of quantum information.

Monolayer boron nanosheet, commonly known as borophene, has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its unique structural, electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in the synthetic strategies, tunable properties, and prospective applications of borophene, specifically focusing on its potential in energy storage devices. The review begins by discussing the various synthesis techniques for borophene, including molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and chemical methods, such as ultrasonic exfoliation and thermal decomposition of boron-containing precursors. The tunable properties of borophene, including its electronic, mechanical, and thermal characteristics, are extensively reviewed, with discussions on its bandgap engineering, plasmonic behavior, and thermal conductivity. Moreover, the potential applications of borophene in energy storage devices, particularly as anode materials in metal-ion batteries and supercapacitors, along with its prospects in other energy storage systems, such as sodium-oxygen batteries, are succinctly, discussed. Olefin [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions based on coordination-bond templates provide numerous advantages for the selective synthesis of cyclobutane compounds. This review outlines the recent advances in the design and construction of single crystal platforms of olefinic coordination polymers for precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms, and possible developments as comprehensively as possible. Numerous examples are presented to illustrate how the arrangements of the olefin pairs influence the solid-state photoreactivity and examine the types of cyclobutane products. Furthermore, the photocycloaddition reaction mechanisms are investigated by combining advanced techniques such as single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy and theoretical calculations. Finally, potential applications resulting from promising physicochemical properties before and after photoreactions are discussed, and existing challenges and possible solutions are also proposed.

The impact of isomerism of pyrimidine-based ligands and their rhodium(III) complexes with regard to their structures and properties was investigated. Two isomeric ligands, 4-(3,5-dimethyl-1 H -pyrazol-1-yl)-2,5-diphenylpyrimidine (HL2,5) and 4-(3,5-dimethyl-1 H -pyrazol-1-yl)-2,6-diphenylpyrimidine (HL2,6), were synthesized. The ligands differ by the degree of steric bulk: the molecular structure of HL2,5 is more distorted due to presence of pyrazolyl and phenyl groups in the neighbouring positions 4 and 5 of the pyrimidine ring. The complexation of HL2,5 and HL2,6 with RhCl 3 leads to the sp 2 C-H bond activation, resulting in the isolation of two complexes, [RhL2,5(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH and [RhL2,6(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH (Solv = H 2 O, EtOH), with the deprotonated forms of the pyrazolylpyrimidine molecules which coordinate the Rh 3+ ion as N^N^C-tridentate ligands. According to DFT modelling, the mechanism of the deprotonation involves (i) the C-H bond breaking in the 2-phenyl group followed by the coordination of the C atom to the Rh atom, (ii) the protonation of coordinated chlorido ligand, (iii) the ejection of the HCl molecule and (iv) the coordination of the H 2 O molecule. The ligand isomerism has an impact on emission properties and cytotoxicity of the complexes. Although the excited states of the complexes effectively deactivate through S 0 /T 1 and S 0 /S 1 crossings associated with the cleavage of the weak H 2 O ligands upon excitation, the [RhL2,5(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH complex appeared to be emissive in the solid state, while [RhL2,6(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH is non-emissive at all. The complexes show significant cytotoxic activity against cancerous HepG2 and Hep2 cell lines, with the [RhL2,6(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH complex being more active than its isomer [RhL2,5(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH. On the other hand, noticeable cytotoxicity of the latter against HepG2 is supplemented by its non-toxicity against non-cancerous MRC-5 cells.

Digital therapeutic programs are emerging almost daily, offering the potential to reduce healthcare access inequalities by providing more flexible and accessible care options. However, as with traditional healthcare, the issue of patient engagement is fundamental, and the latest research have reported that fewer than 30% of users complete these programs in their entirety. Hence, many authors emphasize the importance of studying the role of therapeutic alliances specifically adapted to digital care. The therapeutic alliance encompasses the collaborative aspects of the relationship between the therapist and the patient. In this context there is a need to reconceptualize the alliance within the context of digital healthcare as it can enhance engagement, adherence, and the effectiveness of such treatments. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify the components of the digital therapeutic alliance. A thematic analysis has identified three major themes that appear to constitute the digital therapeutic alliance among 44 users of an online program: trust in the program, perception of interactions, and feeling of consideration. These results prompted a discussion of the challenges of digital healthcare, including the terminology to use. Metal ion-catalyzed overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is believed to contribute significantly to oxidative stress and be involved in several biological processes, from immune defense to development of diseases. Among the essential metal ions, copper is one of the most efficient catalysts in ROS production in the presence of O2 and a physiological reducing agent such as ascorbate. To control this chemistry, Cu ions are tightly coordinated to biomolecules. Free or loosely bound Cu ions are generally avoided to prevent their toxicity. In the present report, we aim to find stable Cu-ligand complexes (Cu-L) that can efficiently catalyze the production of ROS in the presence of ascorbate under aerobic conditions. Thermodynamic stability would be needed to avoid dissociation in the biological environment, and high ROS catalysis is of interest for applications as antimicrobial or anticancer agents. A series of Cu complexes with the well-known tripodal and tetradentate ligands containing a central amine linked to three pyridyl-alkyl arms of different lengths were investigated. Two of them with mixed arm length showed a higher catalytic activity in the oxidation of ascorbate and subsequent ROS production than Cu salts in buffer, which is an unprecedented result. Despite these high catalytic activities, no increased antimicrobial activity toward Escherichia coli or cytotoxicity against eukaryotic AGS cells in culture related to Cu-L-based ROS production could be observed. Background: Craving is a core symptom of cocaine use disorders (CUD). Inducing craving in exposure to substance cues is of relevant interest for numerous clinical applications. Virtual reality exposure (VRE) might be a promising candidate for improving cue-exposure paradigms but remains almost not studied for cocaine. This feasibility study's main aim is to assess whether VRE to cocaine cues is capable to induce cocaine craving compared with VRE to neutral cues., Methods: We conducted a within-subjects controlled trial in which cocaine users performed 3 consecutive 10 mins-tasks: VRE to neutral and cocaine cues, and a relaxation-based resting procedure. The primary outcome was the change in Cocaine Craving Questionnaire-Brief (CCQ-Brief) scores between VRE to neutral and cocaine cues. Secondary outcomes included between-tasks changes in scores of cocaine craving, pleasant/unpleasant emotions as well as self-efficacy to cope with craving., Results: We recruited 11 chronic cocaine users including mostly crack smokers (45 %), cocaine snorters (36 %) and injectors (18 %), with 73 % of participants meeting DSM-IV criteria for cocaine dependence and/or abuse. Non-parametrical sign tests indicated significant large increases of CCQ-Brief scores from neutral to cocaine cue-VRE (S(11) = 11, p < 0.01, Cliff's Δ = 0.65, 95 % CI: 0.17-0.88). Exploratory comparative analyses indicated significant changes after our post-cues VRE relaxation procedure, with cocaine craving and emotions restored to baseline., Conclusions: VRE to cocaine cues was feasible and capable to induce cocaine craving in cocaine users. Increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a global healthcare threat. To decrease the spread of AMR and associated mortality, methods for rapid selection of optimal antibiotic treatment are urgently needed. Machine learning (ML) models based on genomic data to predict resistant phenotypes can serve as a fast screening tool prior to phenotypic testing. Nonetheless, many existing ML methods lack interpretability. Therefore, we present a methodology for visualization of sequence space and AMR prediction based on the non-linear dimensionality reduction method - generative topographic mapping (GTM). This approach, applied to AMR data of >5000 S. aureus isolates retrieved from the PATRIC database, yielded GTM models with reasonable accuracy for all drugs (balanced accuracy values ≥0.75). The Generative Topographic Maps (GTMs) represent data in the form of illustrative maps of the genomic space and allow for antibiotic-wise comparison of resistant phenotypes. The maps were also found to be useful for the analysis of genetic determinants responsible for drug resistance. In this study, the insertion of fluorine into LiFePO 4 was carried out under molecular fluorine F 2 at different temperatures. The reactivity strongly depends on the applied fluorination temperature, leading to very different products: core delithiation of the material is observed at low temperatures with the formation of a LiF shell around particles, while the material decomposes to gradually form a mixture of α-FeF 3 and α-Li 3 FeF 6 iron fluorides at higher temperatures. A second thermal treatment under N 2 leads to the formation of LiFePO 4 F in a new way that has not been reported before. Supported by X-ray diffraction, Raman, infrared, Mössbauer spectroscopies, 7 Li nuclear magnetic resonance and electrochemical characterization of the different materials, this report demonstrates various fluorination mechanisms for LiFePO 4 , from chemical delithiation to the stable pure fluorinated form LiFePO 4 F and illustrates an innovative method that can be extended to obtain the triphylite form of NaFePO 4 .

The advancement of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high performance is crucial across various sectors, notably in space exploration. This advancement hinges on the development of innovative cathode materials. Our research is dedicated to pioneering a new category of cathodes using fluorinated multimetallic materials, with a specific focus on diverging from the traditional Ni, Co, and Mn-based NMC chemistries by substituting nickel and manganese with copper and iron which are more sustainable elements. Our goal is also to enhance the robustness of cathodes upon cycling by substituting oxygen with fluorine as the metal-ligand. To achieve this, an intimate composite blend of CuF 2 and FeF 3 , through the multi-metallic template fluorination (MMTF) methodology using a layered double hydroxide (LDH) as a precursor has been designed. Each of these components was carefully selected for its distinct attributes, including high redox potential, elevated energy density, substantial theoretical capacity, and improved cyclability. The composition denoted as (Cu 1.5 Co 0.5 ) 2+ (Fe 0.75 Al 0.25 ) 3+ has been selected for fluorination because it maximizes Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ amount in the screened LDHs. Subsequently, this particular LDH was fluorinated through solid-gas fluorination at different temperatures (200, 350, and 500 °C) using gaseous molecular fluorine (F 2 ). A comprehensive characterization of these materials using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), 57 Fe Mössbauer spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), and inductively coupled plasma analyses (ICP-AES) was conducted, and the evolution of LDH upon fluorination has revealed an intermediate porous texture particularly sensitive to hydration. Two original crystallographic phases are else obtained by fluorination: one formed by the hydration of the amorphous intermediate compound: Cu 3 Fe 1.5 Al 0.5 F 12 (H 2 O) 12 an anti-perovskite structure and another stabilized through the combination of solid gas fluorination and LDH precursor yielding an original CoFeF 5 -type phase. Raman operando during cyclic voltammetry measurement applied on a sample fluorinated at 500 °C and used as a cathode in front of lithium metal was finally conducted to validate redox activity and mechanism.

The ultrafast nonadiabatic excited state dynamics of (PTZ-N-benzyl-acetylide) ( trans -bis-trimethylphosphine) Pt(II) (acetylide-NDI-bis-methyl) 1 , representative of a series of Pt(II) donor-bridge-acceptor assemblies experimentally studied by the Weinstein group, University of Sheffield, is investigated by means of wavepacket propagations based on the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. On the basis of electronic structure data obtained at the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) level, the subpicosecond decay is simulated by solving an 11 electronic states multimode problem, up to 18 vibrational normal modes, including both spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and vibronic coupling. A careful analysis of the results, within the diabatic representation, provides the key features of the spin-vibronic mechanism at work in this complex, distinguishing between the spin-orbit and vibronically activated ultrafast processes within the excited states manifold. The knowledge of the key active normal modes that promote selectively the population of specific electronic excited states opens a route toward optical control by selectively exciting these modes in order to drive the associated nonadiabatic processes. Relevant simulations, over 2 ps, are proposed to assess the impact of these selective vibrational excitations on the branching ratio between the primary photoproducts, namely, bridge-acceptor charge-transfer (CT) and donor-acceptor charge-separated (CS) electronic states. Whereas the excitation of the localized acetylide bridge C≡C bond stretching does not modify drastically the population of the low-lying electronic states within the first two ps, vibrational excitation of the out-of-plane twisting motion of the N-benzyl group linked to the donor entity favors the population of the 1,3 CS states at the expense of the lowest 1,3 CT states. This quantum study opens the route to IR optical control experiments based on the specific alteration of vibrational normal modes that activate vibronic couplings between key electronic excited states. However, the presence of critical crossings along the PES channels associated with these normal modes and the role of concurrent SOC driven ultrafast transfers of population should not be underestimated.

A [2+3] chiral covalent organic cage is produced through a dynamic covalent chemistry approach by mixing two readily available building units, viz. an enantiopure 3,3'-diformyl 2,2'-BINOL compound (A) with a triamino spacer (B). The two enantiomeric (R,R,R) and (S,S,S) forms of the cage C are formed nearly quantitatively thanks to the reversibility of the imine linkage. The X-ray diffraction analysis of cage (S,S,S)-C highlights that the six OH functions of the BINOL fragments are positioned inside the cage cavity. Upon reduction of the imine bonds of cage C, the amine cage D is obtained. The ability of the cage D to host the 1-phenylethylammonium cation (EH + ) as a guest is evaluated through UV, CD and DOSY NMR studies. A higher binding constant for (R)-EH + cation (Ka=1.7 10 6 ±10 % M -1 ) related to (S)-EH + (Ka=0.9 10 6 ±10 % M -1 ) is determined in the presence of the (R,R,R)-D cage. Plasma membrane damage occurs in healthy cells and more frequently in cancer cells where high growth rates and metastasis result in frequent membrane damage. The annexin family of proteins plays a key role in membrane repair. Annexins are recruited at the membrane injury site by Ca +2 and repair the damaged membrane in concert with several other proteins. Annexin A4 (ANXA4) and ANXA5 form trimers at the bilayer surface, and previous simulations show that the trimers induce high local negative membrane curvature on a flat bilayer. The membrane-curvature-inducing property of ANXA5 is presumed to be vital to the membrane repair mechanism. A previously proposed descriptive model hypothesizes that ANXA5-mediated curvature force is utilized at the free edge of the membrane at a wound site to pull the wound edges together, resulting in the formation of a "neck"-shaped structure, which, when combined with a constriction force exerted by ANXA6, leads to membrane repair. The molecular details and mechanisms of repair remain unknown, in part because the membrane edge is a transient structure that is difficult to investigate both experimentally and computationally. For the first time, we investigate the impact of ANXA5 near a membrane edge, which is modeled by a bicelle under periodic boundary conditions. ANXA5 trimers induce local curvature on the membrane leading to global bending of the bicelle. The global curvature depends on the density of annexins on the bicelle, and the curvature increases with the ANXA5 concentration until it reaches a plateau. The simulations suggest that not only do annexins induce local membrane curvature, but they can change the overall shape of a free-standing membrane. We also demonstrate that ANXA5 trimers reduce the rate of phosphatidylserine lipid diffusion from the cytoplasmic to the exoplasmic leaflet along the edge of the bicelle. In this way, membrane-bound annexins can potentially delay the apoptotic signal triggered by the presence of phosphatidylserine lipids in the outer leaflet, thus biding time for repair of the membrane hole.
