The ability to grow long scalp hair is a distinct human characteristic. It probably originally evolved to aid in cooling the sun-exposed head, although the genetic determinants of long hair are largely unknown. Despite ancestral variations in hair growth, long scalp hair is common to all extant human populations, which suggests its emergence before or concurrently with the emergence of anatomically modern humans (AMHs), approximately 300 000 years ago. Long scalp hair in AMHs was also a trait that was selected because it conveyed essential signals related to an individual's age, sexual maturity, health and social status. Biologically, hair length is primarily determined by the amount of time that a hair follicle spends in the active growth phase (anagen). While anagen duration is typically tightly regulated in most mammals, the inherent ability of a hair follicle to continuously recruit new dividing progenitors to its base, where hair fibre is generated, theoretically removes limits on maximal anagen duration. We propose a model wherein hair cycle progression into and out of anagen is regulated by evolutionary malleable molecular checkpoints. Several animal species and domesticated animal breeds display long body hair, which suggests that extremely long scalp hair in humans emerged via attenuation of an existing out-of-anagen checkpoint mechanism rather than via a newly evolved molecular programme. Background: Cryotherapy is a non-pharmacological option that complements drug therapy to achieve the most comprehensive multimodal analgesia. Various techniques are currently available, including the conventional gel cold pack, the cryo-cuff, and a novel mobile cold compression device (MCCD). This study aimed to evaluate and compare three cryotherapy techniques in terms of efficacy and patient satisfaction in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA)., Methods: This prospective randomized study included 108 patients who were scheduled for primary unilateral TKA. The patients were allocated to 3 groups for postoperative cryotherapy techniques: gel cold pack, cryo-cuff, and MCCD. Scores on the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity, morphine consumption, knee range of motion (ROM), knee swelling, length of hospital stay, and patient satisfaction were collected., Results: Postoperative VAS scores showed a significant difference among the groups at 8 and 72 h after surgery (P = 0.002 and 0.026, respectively). At the earliest postoperative time point, post hoc analysis demonstrated that patients in the MCCD group had lower pain scores than those in the gel cold pack (P < 0.001) and the cryo-cuff group (P = 0.030). However, cryo-cuff reduced knee swelling significantly compared to gel cold pack (P = 0.028) and MCCD (P = 0.011) at postoperative 72 h. The total satisfaction score was 86.8, 82.8, and 89.1 with gel cold pack, cryo-cuff, and MCCD, respectively., Conclusions: Cryotherapy is an adjunct to post-TKA pain control at the surgical site. TiO 2 nanotubes (NTs) with amorphous and crystalline structures have attracted interest due to their wide range of applications, particularly black TiO 2 , which addresses the limitations of conventional TiO 2 (a wide band gap of 3.0-3.2 eV). Understanding the amorphous-to-anatase phase transition is crucial for phase control of crystalline TiO 2 . This study investigates the size-dependent phase transition behavior of TiO 2 and black TiO 2 NTs using temperature-dependent synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction. Thermal treatments reveal that phase transitions occur in the ranges of 210-240 °C for normal NTs and 270-300 °C for black NTs. The onset temperature and crystallization growth are dependent on size, especially NT length, at least in the system under investigation. We observe anisotropic crystallization in quantum confinement, with the unit cell undergoing compression in the a -axis and expansion in the c -axis during crystallization. The longest black NTs (BV50T4) show a significant difference in the c / a ratio. Defects, such as oxygen vacancies, localize on specific NT planes.

Developing efficient metal-free catalysts to directly synthesize hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) through a 2-electron (2e) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for substituting the traditional energy-intensive anthraquinone process. Here, in-plane topological defects enriched graphene with pentagon-S and pyrrolic-N coordination (SNC) is synthesized via the process of hydrothermal and nitridation. In SNC, pentagon-S and pyrrolic-N originating from thiourea precursor are covalently grafted onto the basal plane of the graphene framework, building unsymmetrical dumbbell-like S─C─N motifs, which effectively modulates atomic and electronic structures of graphene. The SNC catalyst delivers ultrahigh H 2 O 2 productivity of 8.1, 7.3, and 3.9 mol g catalyst -1  h -1 in alkaline, neutral, and acidic electrolytes, respectively, together with long-term operational stability in pH-universal electrolytes, outperforming most reported carbon catalysts. Theoretical calculations further unveil that defective S─C─N motifs efficiently optimize the binding strength to OOH * intermediate and substantially diminish the kinetic barrier for reducing O 2 to H 2 O 2 , thereby promoting the intrinsic activity of 2e-ORR., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Chromium(III)-doped zinc gallate (CZGO) is one of the representative persistent luminescent phosphors emitting in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The emission wavelength it covers falls in the tissue-transparent window, making CZGO a promising optical probe for various biomedical applications. The PersL mechanism dictates that such a phenomenon is only profound in large crystals, so the preparation of CZGO with sizes small enough for biological applications while maintaining its luminescence remains a challenging task. Recent attempts to use mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) as a template for growing nanosized CZGO have been successful. MSN is also a well-studied drug carrier, and incorporating CZGO in MSN further expands its potential in imaging-guided therapeutics. Despite the interest, it is unclear of how the addition of MSN would affect the luminescence properties of CZGO. In this work, we observed that forming a CZGO@MSN nanocomposite could enhance the luminescence intensity and extend the PersL lifetime of CZGO. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis was conducted to investigate the local structure of Zn 2+ , and an interaction between Zn 2+ in CZGO and the MSN matrix was identified.

Cobalt-nitrogen-carbon (Co-N-C) catalysts with a CoN 4 structure exhibit great potential for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but the imperfect adsorption energy toward oxygen species greatly limits their reduction efficiency and practical application potential. Here, F-coordinated Co-N-C catalysts with square-pyramidal CoN 4 -F 1 configuration are successfully synthesized using F atoms to regulate the axial coordination of Co centers via hydrothermal and chemical vapor deposition methods. During the synthesis process, the geometry structure of the Co atom converts from six-coordinated Co-F 6 to square-pyramidal CoN 4 -F 1 in the coordinatively unsaturated state, which provides an open binding site for the O 2 . The introduction of axial F atoms into the CoN 4 plane alters the local atomic environment around Co, significantly improving the ORR activity and Zn-air batteries performance. In situ spectroscopy proves that CoN 4 -F 1 sites strongly combine with the OOH* intermediate and facilitate the splitting of O-O bond, making OOH* readily decompose into O* and OH* via a dissociative pathway. Theoretical calculations confirm that the axial F atom effectively reduces the electronic density of the Co centers and facilitates the desorption of the OH* intermediate, efficiently accelerating the overall ORR kinetics. This work advances a feasible synthesis mechanism of axial ligands and provides a route to construct efficient high-coordination catalysts.

Halide solid electrolytes (SEs) have attracted significant attention due to their competitive ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability. Among typical halide SEs (chlorides, bromides, and iodides), substantial efforts have been dedicated to chlorides or bromides, with iodide SEs receiving less attention. Nevertheless, compared with chlorides or bromides, iodides have both a softer Li sublattice and lower reduction limit, which enable iodides to possess potentially high ionic conductivity and intrinsic anti-reduction stability, respectively. Herein, we report a new series of iodide SEs: Li x YI 3+x (x=2, 3, 4, or 9). Through synchrotron X-ray/neutron diffraction characterizations and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the Li x YI 3+x SEs belong to the high-symmetry cubic structure, and can accommodate abundant vacancies. By manipulating the defects in the iodide structure, balanced Li-ion concentration and generated vacancies enables an optimized ionic conductivity of 1.04 × 10 -3  S cm -1 at 25 °C for Li 4 YI 7 . Additionally, the promising Li-metal compatibility of Li 4 YI 7 is demonstrated via electrochemical characterizations (particularly all-solid-state Li-S batteries) combined with interface molecular dynamics simulations. Tuning interfacial electric fields provides a powerful means to control electrocatalyst activity. Importantly, electric fields can modify adsorbate binding energies based on their polarizability and dipole moment, and hence operate independently of scaling relations that fundamentally limit performance. However, implementation of such a strategy remains challenging because typical methods modify the electric field non-uniformly and affects only a minority of active sites. Here we discover that uniformly tunable electric field modulation can be achieved using a model system of single-atom catalysts (SACs). These consist of M-N 4 active sites hosted on a series of spherical carbon supports with varying degrees of nanocurvature. Using in-situ Raman spectroscopy with a Stark shift reporter, we demonstrate that a larger nanocurvature induces a stronger electric field. We show that this strategy is effective over a broad range of SAC systems and electrocatalytic reactions. For instance, Ni SACs with optimized nanocurvature achieved a high CO partial current density of ~400 mA cm -2 at >99% Faradaic efficiency for CO 2 reduction in acidic media., (© 2024. The recently surged halide-based solid electrolytes (SEs) are great candidates for high-performance all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), due to their decent ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window, and good compatibility with high-voltage oxide cathodes. In contrast to the crystalline phases in halide SEs, amorphous components are rarely understood but play an important role in Li-ion conduction. Here, we reveal that the presence of amorphous component is common in halide-based SEs that are prepared via mechanochemical method. The fast Li-ion migration is found to be associated with the local chemistry of the amorphous proportion. Taking Zr-based halide SEs as an example, the amorphization process can be regulated by incorporating O, resulting in the formation of corner-sharing Zr-O/Cl polyhedrons. This structural configuration has been confirmed through X-ray absorption spectroscopy, pair distribution function analyses, and Reverse Monte Carlo modeling. The unique structure significantly reduces the energy barriers for Li-ion transport. As a result, an enhanced ionic conductivity of (1.35 ± 0.07) × 10 -3 S cm -1 at 25 °C can be achieved for amorphous Li 3 ZrCl 4 O 1.5 . In addition to the improved ionic conductivity, amorphization of Zr-based halide SEs via incorporation of O leads to good mechanical deformability and promising electrochemical performance. These findings provide deep insights into the rational design of desirable halide SEs for high-performance ASSBs.

The field of designing artificial metalloproteins has yet to effectively tackle the incorporation of multimetal clusters, which is a key component of natural metalloproteins, such as metallothioneins (MTs) and calmodulin. MT is a physiological, essential, cysteine-rich metalloprotein that binds to a variety of metals but is only known to form metal-thiolate clusters with Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Cu + . Bismuth is a xenobiotic metal and a component of metallodrugs used to treat gastric ulcers and cancer, as well as an emerging metal used in industrial practices. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, UV-visible spectroscopy, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy were used to probe the Bi 3+ binding site structures in apo-MT3 (brain-located MT) at pH 7.4 and 2 and provide the complete set of binding affinities. We discovered the highly cooperative formation of a novel Bi 3+ species, Bi 2 MT3, under physiological conditions, where each Bi 3+ ion is coordinated by three cysteinyl thiolates, with one of the thiolates bridging between the two Bi 3+ ions. This cluster structure was associated with a strong visible region absorption band, which was disrupted by the addition of Zn 2+ and reversibly disrupted by acidification and increased temperature. This is the first reported presence of bridging cysteines for a xenobiotic metal in MT3 and the Bi 2 MT structure is the first Bi cluster found in a metalloprotein.

In this work, we studied the optical properties of Dy-doped Gd 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) before and after their APTES functionalisation. We obtained luminescent Dy@Gd 2 O 3 NPs (0.5, 1, and 5% mol) using a modified polyol method. Our work describes their detailed structural analysis using FT-IR, XRD, HRTEM, TGA and XAS techniques. The results show that these systems present a crystalline structure with a body-centred cubic cell and particle sizes of 10 nm. The dopant position was inferred as substitutional, through XAS analysis at the M 4,5 -edges of Gd and Dy and K-edge of O, and in C 2 sites, based on photoluminescence studies. There was sensitization of the luminescence by the matrix as shown by the emission increase of the hypersensitive transition ( 6 F 9/2 → 6 H 13/2 , 572 nm) and also a broadband appears around 510 nm attributed to defects in Gd 2 O 3 . An enhanced emissive lifetime of 398 μs was found for the sample doped at 1%. We functionalised the Dy@Gd 2 O 3 (at 1%) NPs with 3-aminopropiltrietoxisilane (APTES) for further application as a biomarker sensor. We found that these NPs conserved their luminescence after adding the surface agent (avoiding quenching effects) making them potential materials for biosensing.

Solid electrolyte is vital to ensure all-solid-state batteries with improved safety, long cyclability, and feasibility at different temperatures. Herein, we report a new family of amorphous solid electrolytes, xLi 2 O-MCl y (M = Ta or Hf, 0.8 ≤ x ≤ 2, y = 5 or 4). xLi 2 O-MCl y amorphous solid electrolytes can achieve desirable ionic conductivities up to 6.6 × 10 -3  S cm -1 at 25 °C, which is one of the highest values among all the reported amorphous solid electrolytes and comparable to those of the popular crystalline ones. The mixed-anion structural models of xLi 2 O-MCl y amorphous SEs are well established and correlated to the ionic conductivities. It is found that the oxygen-jointed anion networks with abundant terminal chlorines in xLi 2 O-MCl y amorphous solid electrolytes play an important role for the fast Li-ion conduction. More importantly, all-solid-state batteries using the amorphous solid electrolytes show excellent electrochemical performance at both 25 °C and -10 °C. Long cycle life (more than 2400 times of charging and discharging) can be achieved for all-solid-state batteries using the xLi 2 O-TaCl 5 amorphous solid electrolyte at 400 mA g -1 , demonstrating vast application prospects of the oxychloride amorphous solid electrolytes., (© 2023. There is an urgent need to identify biomarkers of early response that can accurately predict the benefit of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). Patients receiving durvalumab/tremelimumab had tumor samples sequenced before treatment (baseline) to identify variants for the design of a personalized circulating tumor (ctDNA) assay. ctDNA was assessed at baseline and at 4 and/or 8 weeks into treatment. Correlations between ctDNA changes to radiographic response and overall survival (OS) were made to assess potential clinical benefit. 35/40 patients (87.5%) had personalized ctDNA assays designed, and 29/35 (82.9%) had plasma available for baseline analysis, representing 16 unique solid tumor histologies. As early as 4 weeks after treatment, decline in ctDNA from baseline predicted improved OS (P = 0.0144; HR = 9.98) and ctDNA changes on treatment-supported and refined radiographic response calls. ctDNA clearance at any time through week 8 identified complete responders by a median lead time of 11.5 months ahead of radiographic imaging. ctDNA response monitoring is emerging as a dynamic, personalized biomarker method that may predict survival outcomes in patients with diverse solid tumor histologies, complementing and sometimes preceding standard-of-care imaging assessments., (© 2022 Foundation Medicine, Omico and Natera Inc. The revival of ternary halides Li-M-X (M = Y, In, Zr, etc.; X = F, Cl, Br) as solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) shows promise in realizing practical solid-state batteries due to their direct compatibility toward high-voltage cathodes and favorable room-temperature ionic conductivities. Most of the reported superionic halide SSEs have a structural pattern of [MCl 6 ] x - octahedra and generate a tetrahedron-assisted Li + ion diffusion pathway. Here, we report a new class of zeolite-like halide frameworks, SmCl 3 , for example, in which 1-dimensional channels are enclosed by [SmCl 9 ] 6- tricapped trigonal prisms to provide a short jumping distance of 2.08 Å between two octahedra for Li + ion hopping. The fast Li + diffusion along the channels is verified through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Similar to zeolites, the SmCl 3 framework can be grafted with halide species to obtain mobile ions without altering the base structure, achieving an ionic conductivity over 10 -4 S cm -1 at 30 °C with LiCl as the adsorbent. Moreover, the universality of the interface-bonding behavior and ionic diffusion in a class of framework materials is demonstrated. It is suggested that the ionic conductivity of the MCl 3 /halide composite (M = La-Gd) is likely in correlation with the ionic conductivity of the grafted halide species, interfacial bonding, and framework composition/dimensions. This work reveals a potential class of halide structures for superionic conductors and opens up a new frontier for constructing zeolite-like frameworks in halide-based materials, which will promote the innovation of superionic conductor design and contribute to a broader selection of halide SSEs.

While tuning the electronic structure of Pt can thermodynamically alleviate CO poisoning in direct methanol fuel cells, the impact of interactions between intermediates on the reaction pathway is seldom studied. Herein, we contrive a PtBi model catalyst and realize a complete inhibition of the CO pathway and concurrent enhancement of the formate pathway in the alkaline methanol electrooxidation. The key role of Bi is enriching OH adsorbates (OH ad ) on the catalyst surface. The competitive adsorption of CO adsorbates (CO ad ) and OH ad at Pt sites, complementing the thermodynamic contribution from alloying Bi with Pt, switches the intermediate from CO ad to formate that circumvents CO poisoning. Hence, 8% Bi brings an approximately 6-fold increase in activity compared to pure Pt nanoparticles. This notion can be generalized to modify commercially available Pt/C catalysts by a microwave-assisted method, offering opportunities for the design and practical production of CO-tolerance electrocatalysts in an industrial setting.

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are a unique class of materials that exhibit visible luminescence. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) is a widely used biomaterial for a variety of purposes, such as drug delivery, bone cementing, and implant coatings. In this study, a nanocomposite of AuNCs and ACP is prepared by biomimetic mineralization in a Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM). The strong interaction between AuNCs and Ca 2+ ions effectively induces aggregation of AuNCs. The as-formed nanocomposite, AuNCs@ACP, emits significantly enhanced luminescence compared to AuNCs alone. The luminescence enhancement mechanism is investigated using synchrotron X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. In addition, the presence of AuNCs stabilizes ACP and also enhances the biocompatibility of ACP in promoting cell proliferation, and the nanocomposites are promising as nanoprobes for cancer therapy and/or bone tissue engineering.

Developing efficient electrocatalysts to accelerate the sluggish conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) is of paramount importance for improving the performances of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, a consensus has not yet been reached on the in situ evolution of the electrocatalysts as well as the real catalytic active sites. Herein, defective MnV 2 O 6 (D-MVO) is designed as a precatalyst toward LiPSs' adsorption and conversion. We reveal that the introduction of surface V defects can effectively accelerate the in situ sulfurization of D-MVO during the electrochemical cycling process, which acts as the real electrocatalyst for LiPSs' retention and catalysis. The in situ-sulfurized D-MVO demonstrates much higher electrocatalytic activity than the defect-free MVO toward LiPSs' redox conversion. With these merits, the Li-S batteries with D-MVO separators achieve superior long-term cycling performance with a low decay rate of 0.056% per cycle after 1000 cycles at 1C. Even under an elevated sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm -2 , a high areal capacity of 4.21 mAh cm -2 is still retained after 50 cycles at 0.1C. This work deepens the cognition of the dynamic evolution of the electrocatalysts and provides a favorable strategy for designing efficient precatalysts for advanced Li-S batteries using defect engineering.

Near-infrared (NIR)-emitting persistent luminescence (PersL) nanoparticles have attracted great attention as a novel optical probe for bioimaging and biosensing applications. These nanoparticles emit long-lasting luminescence after the removal of the excitation source, which effectively eliminates the interference from tissue autofluorescence. Cr-doped zinc gallate (ZnGa 2 O 4 :Cr 3+ , CZGO) is a representative NIR-emitting PersL material. On the other hand, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) is a widely used drug carrier due to its high biocompatibility. In this work, we present a design of an ACP-based drug carrier with PersL properties, by forming a CZGO-ACP composite. The PersL properties of CZGO were preserved by composite formation, while it is found that the Zn 2+ could migrate from CZGO to ACP during composite formation, leading to different luminescence mechanisms between pure CZGO and the CZGO-ACP composite. The electronic structure of the composite was analyzed by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and a structure-luminescence correlation was proposed.

Abundant fossil specimens of Scaphechinus mirabilis, now occurring mostly in temperate waters, have been found in the Toukoshan Formation (Pleistocene) in Miaoli County, Taiwan. Environmental changes leading to its extirpation (local extinction) have thus far been elusive. Here, we reconstruct past environmental and oceanic conditions off northwest Taiwan by analyzing clumped isotopes, as well as stable oxygen isotopes, of well-preserved fossil echinoid tests collected from the Toukoshan Formation. Radiocarbon dates suggest that these samples are from Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3). Paleotemperature estimates based on clumped isotopes indicate that fossil echinoids were living in oceanic conditions that range from 9 to 14 °C on average, comparable with the estimate derived for a modern sample from Mutsu Bay, Japan. Notably, this temperature range is ~ 10 °C colder than today's conditions off northwest Taiwan. The substantially lower temperatures during ~ 30 ka (MIS 3) compared to the modern conditions might be due to the rerouting of surface currents off northwest Taiwan when the sea level was ~ 60 m lower than today, in addition to the cooling caused by a lower atmospheric CO 2 level during the Last Glacial Period. Colder waters brought here by the China Coastal Current (CCC) and the existence of shallow subtidal zones termed "Miaoli Bay" (mainly located in the present-day Miaoli county) during MIS 3 plausibly sustained generations of S. mirabilis, yielding tens of thousands of fossil specimens in the well-preserved fossil beds. Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are close complements to lithium-ion batteries for next-generation grid-scale applications owing to their high specific capacity, low cost, and intrinsic safety. Nevertheless, the viable cathode materials (especially manganese oxides) of AZIBs suffer from poor conductivity and inferior structural stability upon cycling, thereby impeding their practical applications. Herein, a facile synthetic strategy of bead-like manganese oxide coated with carbon nanofibers (MnO x -CNFs) based on electrospinning is reported, which can effectively improve the electron/ion diffusion kinetics and provide robust structural stability. These benefits of MnO x -CNFs are evident in the electrochemical performance metrics, with a long cycling durability (i.e., a capacity retention of 90.6% after 2000 cycles and 71% after 5000 cycles) and an excellent rate capability. Furthermore, the simultaneous insertion of H + /Zn 2+ and the Mn redox process at the surface and in the bulk of MnO x -CNFs are clarified in detail. Our present study not only provides a simple avenue for synthesizing high-performance Mn-based cathode materials but also offers unique knowledge on understanding the corresponding electrochemical reaction mechanism for AZIBs.

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction to valuable multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products is attractive but with poor selectivity and activity due to the low-efficient CC coupling. Herein, a lithium vacancy-tuned Li 2 CuO 2 with square-planar [CuO 4 ] layers is developed via an electrochemical delithiation strategy. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the lithium vacancies (V Li ) lead to a shorter distance between adjacent [CuO 4 ] layers and reduce the coordination number of Li + around each Cu, featuring with a lower energy barrier for COCO coupling than pristine Li 2 CuO 2 without V Li . With the V Li percentage of ≈1.6%, the Li 2- x CuO 2 catalyst exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency of 90.6 ± 7.6% for C 2+ at -0.85 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode without iR correction, and an outstanding partial current density of -706 ± 32 mA cm -2 . Developing efficient Pt-based electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is of pivotal importance for large-scale application of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), but Pt suffers from severe deactivation brought by the carbonaceous intermediates such as CO. Here, we demonstrate the formation of a bismuth oxyhydroxide (BiO x (OH) y )-Pt inverse interface via electrochemical reconstruction for enhanced methanol oxidation. By combining density functional theory calculations, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical characterizations, we reveal that the BiO x (OH) y -Pt inverse interface can induce the electron deficiency of neighboring Pt; this would result in weakened CO adsorption and strengthened OH adsorption, thereby facilitating the removal of the poisonous intermediates and ensuring the high activity and good stability of Pt 2 Bi sample. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the inverse interface structure and deep insight into the active sites for MOR, offering great opportunities for rational fabrication of efficient electrocatalysts for DMFCs.

Sodium layered transition-metal oxides have attracted great attention for advanced Na-ion batteries (NIBs) because of their rich structural diversity and superior specific capacity provided by not only cation redox reactions but also possible oxygen-related anionic redox reactions. However, they usually undergo severe electrochemical performance fading, especially the voltage retention during the cationic and anionic redox processes. Herein, we design and synthesize a couple of novel sodium lithium magnesium aluminum manganese oxides (Na 0.75 Li 0.2 Mg 0.05 Al 0.05 Mn 0.7 O 2 ) with the same Na + coordination environment but different oxide layer stacking sequences, namely, P2-NLMAMO and P3-NLMAMO. We systematically investigate and compare the voltage decay phenomenon and the cationic/anionic redox processes under different electrochemical cycling windows combined with ex situ hard and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. The results clearly indicate that the P2-NLMAMO electrode with a lower extent of Mn redox is prone to deliver a superior capacity retention and rate performance, more importantly, a higher average voltage in contrast to the P3-type counterpart. In addition, negligible change is detected for the average discharge voltage upon extended cycling when increasing the discharge cutoff voltage to 2.5 V for both P2-NLMAMO and P3-NLMAMO. This unique feature work provides an effective strategy for developing high-capacity P-type layered cathodes based on both cationic and anionic redox chemistry under controlled crystal structure arrangement, which could lead to a deeper understanding of the correlation between crystal structure and electrochemical performance for NIBs.

Electrocatalytic water splitting, as one of the most promising methods to store renewable energy generated by intermittent sources, such as solar and wind energy, has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Developing efficient, robust, and green catalysts for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) is of great interest. This study concerns a facile and green approach for producing RuNi/RuNi oxide nanoheterostructures by controllable partial oxidation of RuNi nanoalloy, which is characterized and confirmed by various techniques, including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. This nanoheterostructure demonstrates outstanding bifunctional activities for catalyzing the HER and OER with overpotentials that are both among the lowest reported values. In a practical alkali-water-splitting electrolyzer, it also achieves a record-low cell voltage of 1.42 V at 10 mA cm -2 , which is significantly superior to the commercial RuO 2 //Pt/C couple and other reported bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts. Background: With the development of next generation sequencing (NGS) technology and genotype imputation methods, statistical methods have been proposed to test a set of genomic variants together to detect if any of them is associated with the phenotype or disease. In practice, within the set, there is an unknown proportion of variants truly causal or associated with the disease. There is a demand for statistical methods with high power in both dense and sparse scenarios, where the proportion of causal or associated variants is large or small respectively., Results: We propose a new association test - weighted Adaptive Fisher (wAF) that can adapt to both dense and sparse scenarios by adding weights to the Adaptive Fisher (AF) method we developed before. Using simulation, we show that wAF enjoys comparable or better power to popular methods such as sequence kernel association tests (SKAT and SKAT-O) and adaptive SPU (aSPU) test. We apply wAF to a publicly available schizophrenia dataset, and successfully detect thirteen genes. Among them, three genes are supported by existing literature; six are plausible as they either relate to other neurological diseases or have relevant biological functions., Conclusions: The proposed wAF method is a powerful disease-variants association test in both dense and sparse scenarios. Both simulation studies and real data analysis indicate the potential of wAF for new biological findings.

Background and Objectives: This study was aimed at determining the effects of blue light photobiomodulation on primary adult mouse dermal fibroblasts (AMDFs) and the associated signaling pathways., Study Design/materials and Methods: Cultured AMDFs from adult C57BL/6 mice were irradiated by blue light from a light-emitting diode (wavelength = 463 ± 50 nm; irradiance = 5 mW/cm 2 ; energy density = 4-8 J/cm 2 ). The cells were analyzed using mass spectrometry for proteomics/phosphoproteomics, AlamarBlue assay for mitochondrial activity, time-lapse video for cell migration, quantitative polymerase chain reaction for gene expression, and immunofluorescence for protein expression., Results: Proteomic/phosphoproteomic analysis showed inhibition of extracellular signal-regulated kinases/mammalian target of rapamycin and casein kinase 2 pathways, cell motility-related networks, and multiple metabolic processes, including carbon metabolism, biosynthesis of amino acid, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, and the pentose phosphate pathway. Functional analysis demonstrated inhibition of mitochondrial activities, cell migration, and mitosis. Expression of growth promoting insulin-like growth factor 1 and fibrosis-related genes, including transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) and collagen type 1 ɑ2 chain diminished. Protein expression of α-smooth muscle actin, an important regulator of myofibroblast functions, was also suppressed., Conclusions: Low-level blue light exerted suppressive effects on AMDFs, including suppression of mitochondrial activity, metabolism, cell motility, proliferation, TGFβ1 levels, and collagen I production. Low-level blue light can be a potential treatment for the prevention and reduction of tissue fibrosis, such as hypertrophic scar and keloids. Lasers Surg. Morphologic and molecular data often lead to different hypotheses of phylogenetic relationships. Such incongruence has been found in the echinoderm class Echinoidea. In particular, the phylogenetic status of the order Clypeasteroida is not well resolved. Complete mitochondrial genomes are currently available for 29 echinoid species, but no clypeasteroid had been sequenced to date. DNA extracted from a single live individual of Sinaechinocyamus mai was sequenced with 10× Genomics technology. This first complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) for the order Clypeasteroida is 15,756 base pairs in length. Phylogenomic analysis based on 34 ingroup taxa belonging to nine orders of the class Echinoidea show congruence between our new genetic inference and published trees based on morphologic characters, but also includes some intriguing differences that imply the need for additional investigation., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. The ever-increasing demand for large-scale energy storage has driven the prosperous investigation of sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). As a promising cathode candidate for NIBs, P2-type Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 (NaNMO), a prototype sodium-layered oxide, has attracted extensive attention because of its high operating voltage and high capacity density. Although its electrochemical properties have been extensively investigated, the fundamental charge compensation mechanism, that is, the cationic and anionic redox reactions, is still elusive. In this report, we have systematically investigated the transition metal and oxygen redox reactions of NaNMO nanoflakes using bulk-sensitive soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and full-range mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering from an atomic-level view. We show that the bulk Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ redox couple emerges from the first discharge process with the increment of inactive Mn 3+ upon cycling, which may have a negative effect on the cyclability. In contrast, the bulk Ni redox mainly stems from the Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ redox couple, in contrast to the conventional wisdom of the Ni 2+ /Ni 4+ redox couple. The quantitative analysis provides unambiguous evidence for the continuous reduction of the average valence state of Mn and Ni over extended cycles, leading to the voltage fading. In addition, we reveal that the oxygen anions also participate in the charge compensation process mainly through irreversible oxygen release rather than reversible lattice oxygen redox. Such understanding is vital for the precise design and optimization of NaNMO electrodes for rechargeable NIBs with outstanding performance.

Background: Explicit criteria for potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) developed for other countries are difficult to apply to a specific territory. This study aimed to update the PIM-Taiwan criteria from a qualitative review of several published PIM criteria, followed by consensus among regional experts in Taiwan., Methods: After a review of the literature, we selected four sets of published PIM criteria to construct preliminary core PIMs. The Beers criteria, Fit fOR The Aged (FORTA), and Japan criteria were used for PIMs, without consideration of chronic diseases. The Beers criteria, Screening Tool of Older Persons' Prescriptions (STOPP) criteria, and Japan criteria were used for PIMs with respect to chronic diseases. We asked experts ( n  = 24) to rate their agreement with each statement, including in the final PIM criteria, after two rounds of modified Delphi methods. The intraclass coefficient (ICC) was used to examine the reliability of the modified Delphi method., Results: Overall, two categories of PIMs were established: 131 individual drugs and 9 drugs with combinations that should generally be avoided; and 9 chronic diseases with their corresponding PIMs that have drug-disease interactions. The ICC estimates for PIMs to be avoided generally were 0.634 and 0.557 (round 1 and 2) and those for PIMs with respect to chronic diseases were 0.866 and 0.775 (round 1 and 2) of the Delphi method, respectively., Conclusions: The 2018 version of PIM-Taiwan criteria was established and several modifications were made to keep the criteria updated and relevant. Osteoporosis medication in fragility fracture patients is associated with better outcomes. However, limited studies have investigated whether fracture types affect outcomes among patients undergoing treatment. We performed a secondary data analysis on participants from a fracture liaison service and an osteoporosis medication management service. Participants (n = 974) were regrouped into hip fracture (HF), vertebral fracture (VF), HF + VF, and NO HF/VF groups at baseline. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to identify baseline correlates on one-year mortality, incident refractures, and falls. Baseline characteristics were different among fracture groups. The HF group was oldest, with the lowest body mass index (BMI), lowest FRAX® T-score and had the highest 10-year fracture risk. After intervention, the HF group still had the highest mortality, but the HF + VF group had the highest refracture and incident fall rates. In the multivariate regression analysis, prevalent HF and VF, lower BMI and albumin level, and having chronic kidney disease or cancer were associated with higher mortality rates. HF + VF patients had the highest refracture risk. Prevalent HF and VF, older age and higher BMI, and having cancer or osteoarthritis were associated with a greater fall risk. HF and VF are associated with adverse outcomes, even under an optimal fracture care.

A novel bis-benzimidazole organic siloxane precursor (BBM-Si) was prepared, and was combined with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a mixed Si source. Then, bridged periodic mesoporous organosilica (BBM-PMO) spherical nanoparticles were synthesized by co-condensation using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as structure directing agent. The optical properties showed that BBM qualifies as an "aggregation induced emission enhanced" (AIEE) molecule, exhibiting characteristics of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), such as a large Stokes shift and dual fluorescence emission. For the BBM-PMO materials, the silica skeleton provides a rigid environment that limits molecular rotation, resulting in improved fluorescence emission. In particular, the BBM-PMOs exhibited dual emission of the enol and keto forms, achieving a ratiometric response to Cu 2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity in a broad pH range. Additionally, the limit of detection was as low as 7.15 × 10 -9 M in aqueous solution. The X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) showed the coordination structure through the interaction between copper ions and N atoms of benzimidazole in the BBM-PMO coordinated to Cu 2+ . Inorganic lead halide perovskite CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, or I) nanocrystals are promising candidate materials for light-emitting devices and optoelectronics. Mn-Doped CsPbX3 is of particular interest, as the Mn-doping introduces an additional emission band, making this material a promising white-light emitter. In this study, Mn-doped CsPb(Br/Cl)3 nanocrystals are prepared at room-temperature and ambient pressure. The chemical environment of Mn, and the luminescence of these nanocrystals are analyzed in detail using X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL). Although the introduction of Mn does not alter the long-range order of the CsPbX3 crystal, it leads to a local lattice contraction with the bond length of Mn-X much shorter than Pb-X. We also find excitation energy-dependence in both the intensity and wavelength of the perovskite excitonic emission band, while only in intensity of the Mn emission band. Detailed fitting of the XEOL reveals that the perovskite emission band is dual-channel, and it is the excitation energy-dependent intensity variation of these two channels that drives the observed red-shift of the combined emission band. Our findings also confirm that the Mn emission band is driven by exciton-Mn energy transfer and clarify the Mn chemical environment and the luminescence mechanism in Mn-doped CsPb(Br/Cl)3 nanocrystals.

We present reference-quality genome assembly and annotation for the stout camphor tree (Cinnamomum kanehirae (Laurales, Lauraceae)), the first sequenced member of the Magnoliidae comprising four orders (Laurales, Magnoliales, Canellales and Piperales) and over 9,000 species. Phylogenomic analysis of 13 representative seed plant genomes indicates that magnoliid and eudicot lineages share more recent common ancestry than monocots. Two whole-genome duplication events were inferred within the magnoliid lineage: one before divergence of Laurales and Magnoliales and the other within the Lauraceae. Small-scale segmental duplications and tandem duplications also contributed to innovation in the evolutionary history of Cinnamomum. For example, expansion of the terpenoid synthase gene subfamilies within the Laurales spawned the diversity of Cinnamomum monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes.

Osteoporosis and its associated fragility fractures are becoming a severe burden in the healthcare system globally. In the Asian-Pacific (AP) region, the rapidly increasing in aging population is the main reason accounting for the burden. Moreover, the paucity of quality care for osteoporosis continues to be an ongoing challenge. The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) is a program promoted by International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) with a goal to improve quality of postfracture care and prevention of secondary fractures. In this review article, we would like to introduce the Taiwan FLS network. The first 2 programs were initiated in 2014 at the National Taiwan University Hospital and its affiliated Bei-Hu branch. Since then, the Taiwan FLS program has continued to grow exponentially. Through FLS workshops promoted by the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA), program mentors have been able to share their valuable knowledge and clinical experience in order to promote establishments of additional programs. With 22 FLS sites including 11 successfully accredited on the best practice map, Taiwan remains as one of the highest FLS coverage countries in the AP region, and was also granted the IOF Best Secondary Fracture Prevention Promotion award in 2017. Despite challenges faced by the TOA, we strive to promote more FLS sites in Taiwan with a main goal of ameliorating further health burden in managing osteoporotic patients.

The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) Consensus Meeting endorsed by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies (AFOS), and Asia Pacific Osteoporosis Foundation (APOF) was hosted by the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association on October 14, 2017. International and domestic experts reviewed the 13 Best Practice Framework (BPF) standards and concluded that all standards were generally applicable in the Asia-Pacific region and needed only minor modifications to fit the healthcare settings in the region., Purpose: To review and generate consensus on best practices of fracture liaison service (FLS) in the Asia-Pacific (AP) region., Methods: In October 2017, the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA) invited experts from the AP region (n = 23), the Capture the Fracture Steering Committee (n = 2), and the USA (n = 1) to join the AP region FLS Consensus Meeting in Taipei. After two rounds of consensus generation, the recommendations on the 13 Best Practice Framework (BPF) standards were reported and reviewed by the attendees. Experts unable to attend the on-site meeting reviewed the draft, made suggestions, and approved the final version., Results: Because the number of FLSs in the region is rapidly increasing, experts agreed that it was timely to establish consensus on benchmark quality standards for FLSs in the region. They also agreed that the 13 BPF standards and the 3 levels of standards were generally applicable, but that some clarifications were necessary. They suggested, for example, that patient and family education be incorporated into the current standards and that communication with the public to promote FLSs be increased., Conclusions: The consensus on the 13 BPF standards reviewed in this meeting was that they were generally applicable and required only a few advanced clarifications to increase the quality of FLSs in the region.

We observed the growth phase transition of n-alkanethiols (AT), CH 3 (CH 2 ) n-1 SH, n = 4-16, directly implanted on a bare Si(111) surface, forming an AT monolayer. These monolayers were characterized with static water-contact angle, high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray fine-structure spectroscopy, and grazing-angle reflection absorption Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The integrated spectral results indicated that the implanted n-AT molecules formed a self-oriented and densely packed monolayer through formation of an S-Si bond. With the number of carbons in the alkyl chain at six or more, namely beginning at hexanethiol, the molecular monolayer began to develop an orientation-ordered structure, which is clearly shorter than that for AT monolayers on Au and Ag. This result implies that, with a stronger molecule-substrate interaction, an ordered molecular monolayer can form with a short chain.

Atomically thin materials, such as graphene, are the ultimate building blocks for nanoscale devices. But although their synthesis and handling today are routine, all efforts thus far have been restricted to flat natural geometries, since the means to control their three-dimensional (3D) morphology has remained elusive. Here we show that, just as a blacksmith uses a hammer to forge a metal sheet into 3D shapes, a pulsed laser beam can forge a graphene sheet into controlled 3D shapes in the nanoscale. The forging mechanism is based on laser-induced local expansion of graphene, as confirmed by computer simulations using thin sheet elasticity theory.

Micrometer sized oxidation patterns were created in chemical vapor deposition grown graphene through scanning probe lithography (SPL) and then subsequently reduced by irradiation using a focused x-ray beam. Throughout the process, the films were characterized by lateral force microscopy, micro-Raman and micro-x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Firstly, the density of grain boundaries was found to be crucial in determining the maximum possible oxygen coverage with SPL. Secondly, the dominant factor in SPL oxidation was found to be the bias voltage. At low voltages, only structural defects are formed on grain boundaries. Above a distinct threshold voltage, oxygen coverage increased rapidly, with the duration of applied voltage affecting the final oxygen coverage. Finally, we found that, independent of initial conditions, types of defects or the amount of SPL oxidation, the same set of coupled rate equations describes the reduction dynamics with the limiting reduction step being C-C → C=C.

Background/purpose: Acute tonsillitis is the leading diagnosis in pediatric ambulatory care, and group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus is the main reason for antibiotic prescriptions in patients with acute tonsillitis. The aim of this study was to analyze trends in prescribing antibiotics and to investigate the prescription patterns for acute tonsillitis in pediatric ambulatory care in Taiwan from 2000 to 2009., Methods: Data on children younger than 18 years with a primary diagnosis of acute tonsillitis were retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan from 2000 to 2009. Concomitant bacterial infections were excluded. Sex, age, seasonality, location, level of medical institution, and physician specialty were analyzed. Annual and monthly changes in antibiotic prescriptions and classification were also evaluated., Results: A total of 40,775 cases were enrolled, with an overall antibiotic prescription rate of 16.8%. There was a remarkable decline in the antibiotic prescription rates for tonsillitis from 28.4% in 2000 to 10.9% in 2009. Factors associated with a higher prescription rate included older age, visits from eastern Taiwan, medical centers, and nonpediatrician physicians. Otolaryngologists had higher antibiotic prescription rate, whereas pediatricians had the lowest (21.9% vs. 11.6%). The rates of obtaining throat cultures were low although the culture performing rate in the medical centers was significantly higher (12.3%, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: From 2000 to 2009, there was a remarkable decline in the antibiotic prescription rates for tonsillitis. Further studies to evaluate diagnostic tools such as rapid antigen detection tests or throat cultures to decrease antibiotic prescriptions are warranted., (Copyright © 2015. Background: Fever of unknown origin (FUO) was first described in 1961 as fever >38.3°C for at least 3 weeks with no apparent source after 1 week of investigations in the hospital. Infectious disease comprises the majority of cases (40-60%). There is no related research on FUO in children in Taiwan. The aim of this study is to determine the etiologies of FUO in children in Taiwan and to evaluate the relationship between the diagnosis and patient's demography and laboratory data., Methods: Children under 18 years old with fever >38.3°C for >2 weeks without apparent source after preliminary investigations at Taipei Veterans General Hospital during 2002-2012 were included. Fever duration, symptoms and signs, laboratory examinations, and final diagnosis were recorded. The distribution of etiologies and age, fever duration, laboratory examinations, and associated symptoms and signs were analyzed., Results: A total of 126 children were enrolled; 60 were girls and 66 were boys. The mean age was 6.7 years old. Infection accounted for 27.0% of cases, followed by undiagnosed cases (23.8%), miscellaneous etiologies (19.8%), malignancies (16.6%), and autoimmune disorders (12.7%). Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) were the most commonly found pathogens for infectious disease, and Kawasaki disease (KD) was the top cause of miscellaneous diagnosis., Conclusions: Infectious disease remains the most common etiology. Careful history taking and physical examination are most crucial for making the diagnosis. Carrier-type modulation is demonstrated in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides as n-type monolayer MoSe 2 is converted to nondegenerate p-type monolayer Mo 1- x W x Se 2 through isoelectronic doping. Background: Antibiotic resistance is a global problem, and the inappropriate overuse of antibiotics is the major cause. Among children seeking medical help, acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are the most common tentative diagnosis made by physicians and the leading condition for which antibiotics are prescribed. This study aimed to examine the trends of prescribing antibiotics in pediatric ambulatory care in Taiwan over a 10-year period., Methods: Children younger than 18 years old and being diagnosed as having ARTIs [International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes 460, 465, and 466] during ambulatory visits from 2000 to 2009 were retrieved from the systematic random sampling datasets of the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. The annual and monthly case numbers were recorded and the children's demographic characteristics, including sex, age, seasonality, location, level of medical institution, physician specialty, and their ambulatory prescriptions of antibiotics were collected and analyzed., Results: Among 565,065 enrolled ambulatory children, 39,324 were prescribed antibiotics. The average antibiotics prescription rate was 7.0% during the 10-year period. There were marked descending trends in case numbers and antibiotic dispensing rates from 2000 to 2009. Female patients, elder ages (≥6 years old), summer and autumn, middle and southern areas of Taiwan, medical centers and regional hospitals, and physicians of pediatric specialty were associated with significantly lower antibiotic dispensing rates than other conditions (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The 10-year antibiotics prescription rate in ambulatory children with ARTIs was 7.0% and it decreased gradually from 2000 to 2009 in Taiwan. Through understanding the annual trends in antibiotic prescriptions, it may be possible to design interventions to improve the judicious use of antibiotics in children., (Copyright © 2014. In the past few decades, gate insulators with a high dielectric constant (high-k dielectric) enabling a physically thick but dielectrically thin insulating layer, have been used to replace traditional SiOx insulator and to ensure continuous downscaling of Si-based transistor technology. However, due to the non-silicon derivative natures of the high-k metal oxides, transport properties in these dielectrics are still limited by various structural defects on the hetero-interfaces and inside the dielectrics. Here, we show that another insulating silicon compound, amorphous silicon nitride (a-Si3N4), is a promising candidate of effective electrical insulator for use as a high-k dielectric. We have examined a-Si3N4 deposited using the plasma-assisted atomic beam deposition (PA-ABD) technique in an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment and demonstrated the absence of defect-related luminescence; it was also found that the electronic structure across the a-Si3N4/Si heterojunction approaches the intrinsic limit, which exhibits large band gap energy and valence band offset. We demonstrate that charge transport properties in the metal/a-Si3N4/Si (MNS) structures approach defect-free limits with a large breakdown field and a low leakage current. Using PA-ABD, our results suggest a general strategy to markedly improve the performance of gate dielectric using a nearly defect-free insulator.

We report a new mechanism for liquid crystal (LC)-based sensor system for trypsin detection. In this system, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was immobilized on gold grids as the enzymatic substrate. When the BSA-modified grid was filled with LC and immersed in the solution containing trypsin, the peptide bonds of BSA were hydrolyzed and peptide fragments were desorbed from the surface of gold grid, which disrupted the orientation of LC at the vicinity and resulted in a dark-to-bright transition of optical image of LCs. By using this mechanism, the limit of detection (LOD) of trypsin is 10 ng/mL, and it does not respond to thrombin and pepsin. Besides, the cleavage behavior on gold surfaces was directly visualized by the scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM), in particular for the chemical composition identification and element-resolved image. The loss of BSA fragments and the enhancement of Au photoelectron signal after trypsin cleavage were corresponding to the proposed mechanism of the LC-based sensor system. Because the signals reported by LC can be simply interpreted through the human naked-eye, it provides a simple method for fast-screening trypsin activity in aqueous solution., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Starting from a robust, nonparametric definition of large returns ("excursions"), we study the statistics of their occurrences, focusing on the recurrence process. The empirical waiting-time distribution between excursions is remarkably invariant to year, stock, and scale (return interval). This invariance is related to self-similarity of the marginal distributions of returns, but the excursion waiting-time distribution is a function of the entire return process and not just its univariate probabilities. Generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models, market-time transformations based on volume or trades, and generalized (Lévy) random-walk models all fail to fit the statistical structure of excursions.

We have grown 1-dodecandthiol (DDT) monolayer on a bare Si(111) surface through ultraviolet-assisted photochemical reaction. The resulting monolayer was investigated by means of water contact angle measurement, synchrotron radiation-based high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and polarization-dependent near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. These combined probes for characterization reveal a hydrophobic ambient surface; the DDT was directly attached to Si through a Si-S bond, and the molecules formed an ordered monolayer with an average tilt angle of 57° of the alkyl chains relative to the substrate surface.

Variations in the cellular microenvironment affect the host's susceptibility to pathogens. Using glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)-deficient fibroblasts as a model, this study demonstrated that the cellular redox status affects infectivity as well as the outcome of enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection. Compared with their normal counterparts, G6PD-deficient cells supported EV71 replication more efficiently and showed greater cytopathic effect and loss of viability. Mechanistically, viral infection led to increased oxidative stress, as indicated by increased dichlorofluorescein fluorescence and a diminished ratio of glutathione (GSH) to its disulfide form (GSSG), with the effect being greater in G6PD-deficient cells. Exogenous expression of active G6PD in the deficient cells, which increased the intracellular GSH:GSSG ratio, suppressed the generation of viral progeny. Consistent with this, treatment with N-acetylcysteine offered resistance to EV71 propagation and a cytoprotective effect on the infected cells. These findings support the notion that G6PD status, and thus redox balance, is an important determinant of enteroviral infection.

A case report of Gaucher's disease associated with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia is described in a patient with gout and carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. This the first reported case of Gaucher's disease associated with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.
