Jaguars and pumas are top-predator species in the Neotropics that are threatened by habitat destruction, illegal poaching of their body parts and their favored prey, and by the human-wildlife conflicts that arise when predators attack livestock. Much of the remaining felid habitat in the Americas is in protected nature reserves that are too small and isolated to support local populations. Surrounding forests therefore play a vital role in felid conservation. Successful long-term conservation of these two felids requires evidence-based knowledge of their biological and ecological requirements. We studied population distributions of jaguars and pumas and their prey in and between two small, private reserves of the Northern Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, with areas of 25 and 43 km 2 . During 2 years of camera trapping (2015 and 2016), we detected 21 jaguars, from which we estimated an average space requirement of 28-45 km 2 /individual. Dietary niche overlap exceeded random expectation. The most frequently occurring prey items in jaguar and puma diets were collared peccary and deer. Jaguar also favored nine-banded armadillos and white-nosed coati, while puma favored canids. Both felids avoided ocellated turkey. Overall, diet of jaguars was less species-rich, but similar in niche breadth, to that of pumas. A fluid use of space by both species, in 2015 tending toward mutual attraction and in 2016 toward partial exclusion of pumas by jaguars, combined with the high dietary overlap, is consistent with a dominance hierarchy facilitating coexistence. Jaguars and pumas favor the same prey as the people in local communities who hunt, which likely will intensify human-wildlife impacts when prey become scarce. We conclude that even small reserves play an important role in increasing the continuity of habitat for prey and large felids, whose generalist habits suppress interspecific competition for increasingly limiting prey that are largely shared between them and humans., (© The Author(s) 2022. Condylar hyperactivity (CH) is a rare condition that entails a progressive deviation and deformation of the mandible. There is no consensus regarding characteristic histopathological features or a standardized diagnostic process; thus, histopathological analysis of the condyle cannot confirm or exclude an active CH after condylectomy is performed. An electronic search was performed in Medline, Embase, Web of Science, LILACS and grey literature up to December 2019. Additionally, a manual search was performed. Risk of bias of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Institute of Health Economics Quality Appraisal. All analyses were performed independently and in duplicate. Seventeen articles from 660 were included. Six articles were cross-sectional studies and 11 were case series. Almost all the articles (14) described an augmented thickness of the cartilage layer associated with cartilage islands within the subchondral bone in patients affected by CH. Histological findings seem to be mostly related to the age of the sample rather than a characteristic description of CH. No clear association was found between SPECT/scintigram uptake and a specific histological finding. Hence, there is a necessity for the development of specific tools for evaluating and reporting studies where histology is needed for diagnosis confirmation., (Copyright © 2020 International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. A cross-sectional study was done in students with univentricular heart after undergoing total cavopulmonary connection (Fontan procedure) to establish their baseline functional capacity based on the six-minute walk test and identify potential determining factors. Thirty patients were included; their median age was 12 years old. Eighteen patients were males. The median distance walked was 551.3 meters, 84 % of the theoretical distance for a healthy pediatric population. Height, pre-test systolic blood pressure, and resting arterial oxygen saturation showed a significant association with the distance walked in the multiple linear regression model. No significant association was observed in the meters walked in terms of the following outcome measures: sex, nutritional status, baseline cardiological diagnosis, number of prior surgeries, and age at the time of Fontan procedure., Competing Interests: None, (Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría.)

Conservation researchers require low-cost access to acoustic monitoring technology. However, affordable tools are often constrained to short-term studies due to high energy consumption and limited storage. To enable long-term monitoring, energy and space efficiency must be improved on such tools. This paper describes the development and deployment of three acoustic detection algorithms that reduce the power and storage requirements of acoustic monitoring on affordable, open-source hardware. The algorithms aim to detect bat echolocation, to search for evidence of an endangered cicada species, and also to collect evidence of poaching in a protected nature reserve. The algorithms are designed to run on AudioMoth: a low-cost, open-source acoustic monitoring device, developed by the authors and widely adopted by the conservation community. Each algorithm addresses a detection task of increasing complexity, implementing extra analytical steps to account for environmental conditions such as wind, analysing samples multiple times to prevent missed events, and incorporating a hidden Markov model for sample classification in both the time and frequency domain. For each algorithm, we report on real-world deployments carried out with partner organisations and also benchmark the hidden Markov model against a convolutional neural network, a deep-learning technique commonly used for acoustics. The deployments demonstrate how acoustic detection algorithms extend the use of low-cost, open-source hardware and facilitate a new avenue for conservation researchers to perform large-scale monitoring.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections occur worldwide, with the endemicity of infection varying among geographical areas. Infections acquired by perinatal via commonly become persistent and can progress to chronic liver diseases, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The possibility of vertical transmission of the VHB infection depend of the serological condition of the mother, women with AgsHB positive can infect 10 to 20% of her fetus while women with AgsHB more AgeHB positive can infect 80-90% of her products. Newborns of women with acute or chronic HBV infection must be immunized with vaccine and hepatitis B immune globulin at birth with the objective to reduce the risk of infection.

It has been described that viral hepatitis is the most frequent cause of jaundice in the pregnant women. In this article we present clinical cases of hepatitis in pregnancy and review the new knowledge about the perinatal repercussion of this association. Hepatitis A is rare in pregnant women and has not a significant perinatal risk. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be transmitted from mother to child by transplacental way or at born. Between 40 to 80 per cent of the children infected by this route will develop chronic hepatitis, so the infants of HBsAg carrier mothers must be immunized at birth. The perinatal transmission of hepatitis C virus has been proved but the repercussion in the fetus or newborn is unknown. Hepatitis D virus can only be transmitted from mother to child together with HBV. Hepatitis E has been associated with a mortality from 10 to 40 per cent in pregnant women and with an increase in the preterm pregnancy.

The association between viral hepatitis and pregnancy is not common, nevertheless it has been described that hepatitis is the most frequent cause of jaundice in pregnant women. In this article the current knowledge on the perinatal repercussions of the different types of viral hepatitis are reviewed. Hepatitis A is rare during pregnancy and is not associated with perinatal risk. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be transmitted transplacentally, 20 per cent of the children infected by this route will develop liver cirrhosis or carcinoma in the adult age, so the infants of HBsAg carrier mothers must be immunized at born. The perinatal transmission of hepatitis C virus has been proved but the repercussion in the fetus or newborn is unknown. Hepatitis D virus can only be transmitted from mother to child together with HBV. Hepatitis E has been associated with a mortality of 10 to 40 per cent in pregnant women.

The incidence of premature rupture of membranes in pregnancies of 36 weeks or less, in relation to the total births (3,796) is 1.3%; in relation to pregnancies less than 36 weeks (49 cases) 21.5%, and in pregnancies of less than 34 weeks (17 cases) of 0.47%. Infectious mortality was 2.2%. There was no maternal mortality. Cesarean section incidence was 43%. Neonatal infectious morbidity was present in 16.3%. Neonatal mortality on 4/30 cases was 13.0%; global mortality at two years was 5/30 cases, 17.0%.

Analysis of 99 M-mode echocardiograms recorded during and up to 144 months after healing of active bacterial endocarditis limited to the mitral valve in 27 patients disclosed the following: (1) Little to no change occurred in the echocardiographic size of the vegetations during the first 6 weeks after diagnosis and institution of appropriate antibiotic therapy unless a major systemic embolus occurred. (2) The echocardiographic size of the vegetations did not determine the amount of cardiac damage or dysfunction produced by the valvular infection. (3) The larger the vegetations by echocardiogram, the greater was the likelihood of a clinical event compatible with a systemic embolus. (4) The gravest prognostic sign yielded by the echocardiogram was evidence of rupture of chordae tendineae. (5) Although a useful adjunct to diagnosis before appropriate antibiotic therapy was instituted, once bacteriologic cure was achieved, the echocardiogram was of limited value in delineating an active from a heated vegetation. (6) The echocardiographic appearance of the vegetations was not determined by the type of infecting bacterium.

Clinical and morphologic features are described in a 56-year-old man in whom severe, isolated pulmonic valve stenosis was treated by valve replacement with a porcine prosthesis. The calcific deposits were located on the ventricular aspect of the pulmonic valve, opposite the location (arterial aspect) of calcific deposits on stenotic aortic valves, and calcific deposits also were present in the tricuspid valve anulus.

Analysis of 37 M-mode echocardiograms recorded during the period of active bacterial endocarditis (ABE) involving the aortic valve (AV) in 17 patients disclosed one or more echocardiographic abnormalities involving the aortic valve cusps or their immediate vicinity in 15 (88%), including "shaggy" echoes indicative of vegetations in 12 (71%). Of the 12 patients with echocardiographic evidence of AV vegetation, 11 developed overt congestive heart failure (CHF) and either died or had AV replacement, and seven had clinical events compatible with systemic emboli; of the five patients without echo-demonstrated vegetations, only one had CHF, none had AV replacement, two died, and one had a systemic embolus. In comparison to our previously reported echocardiographic observations in patients with ABE involving either the mitral (29 patients) or tricuspid valve (23 patients), infection involving the AV was far more liable to produce overt CHF and systemic emboli, to necessitate valve replacement, and to cause death during the period of active infection.

Echocardiographic observations are described in 10 patients with right-sided bacterial endocarditis. Six of the nine patients with tricuspid regurgitation had shaggy echoes on the tricuspid valve, which were confirmed to be vegetations on autopsy in two patients. In six patients, right ventricular dilatation was present, and paradoxic septal motion was seen in four. In one of the patients with pulmonic valve endocarditis, the pulmonic valve and right ventricular outflow tract revealed the shaggy echoes in diastole, along with systolic fluttering of the pulmonic valve, right ventricular dilatation and paradoxic septal motion. When the findings are supplemented to the clinical picture, echocardiography is found to be a useful noninvasive adjunct in the diagnosis of acute vegetative bacterial endocarditis involving the right side of the heart, especially if other clinical features, e.g., fever, leukocytosis and positive blood cultures are absent.

We report a case of variant ventricular tachycardia induced by desipramine toxicity. Unusual features of the arrhythmia are repetitive group beating, progressive shortening of the R-R interval, progressive widening of the QRS complex with eventual failure of intraventricular conduction, and changes in direction of the QRS axis. Recognition of variant ventricular tachycardia is important because therapy differs from that of classic ventricular tachycardia.

Studies about chondrocalcinosis in the Chiloe Islands (Chile) showed the high frequency of the disease there and how most of it is aggregated in a few highly involved families. Pedigrees and the high degree of consanguinity among parents of index cases pointed to a recessive inheritance. The presence of common Caucasian anthropological features of genetic value in the patients and the lack of Indian mixture in three of the involved families, documented back to 1600, suggest a Caucasian origin of the mutation. Biochemical studies of the patients' synovial fluid showed a significant rise in pyrophosphate concentration. Calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase concentrations were not different from a control group.

There is controversy in the medical literature regarding the significance of "sickle cell cardiomyopathy." In an attempt to clarify this, we studied 14 patients with sickle cell anemia (age range 16 to 36 years) using simultaneous echocardiography and phonocardiography. The values of systolic time intervals and echocardiographic indices of left ventricular performance were similar to those reported for normal subjects and those with comparable degrees of anemia. We confirm a previous report of normal left ventricular function at rest in patients with sickle cell anemia and concur with the suggestion that a concomitant heart disease be considered in these patients when cardiac failure supervenes.
