Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes are the most effective and resistant electrodic materials to perform advanced oxidation processes. Having a reactor that can provide adequate hydrodynamic conditions is mandatory to use these electrodes effectively. In this work, the diamond anode electrochemical reactor (E3L-DAER) is designed to fulfill this necessity. Several features are included to improve its efficiency, like conic inlet/outlet, flow enhancers, and a reduced interelectrode gap. The fluid dynamic validation has been performed using computer fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations, residence time distribution (RDT) curves, and mass transfer analysis. The reactor has been made using a three-dimensional (3D) printing stereolithography (SLA) technique, which allows us to build chemical-resistant reactors with nonstandard and tailored features in a cheap and fast way. The obtained results demonstrate that the designed reactor has the required fluid dynamics properties to perform reliable BDD electrode studies and applications. Pathogenic microorganisms are a major concern in indoor environments, particularly in sensitive facilities such as hospitals, due to their potential to cause nosocomial infections. This study evaluates the concentration of airborne bacteria and fungi in the University Hospital Complex of Albacete (Spain), comparing the results with recent literature. Staphylococcus is identified as the most prevalent bacterial genus with a percentage distribution of 35%, while Aspergillus represents the dominant fungal genus at 34%. The lack of high Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 6, TRL 7) for effective indoor air purification requires research efforts to bridge this knowledge gap. A screening of disinfection technologies for pathogenic airborne microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi is conducted. The integration of filtration, irradiation or and (electro)chemical gas treatment systems in duct flows is discussed to enhance the design of the air-conditioning systems for indoor air purification. Concerns over microbial growth have led to recent studies on coating commercial fibrous air filters with antimicrobial particles (silver nanoparticles, iron oxide nanowires) and polymeric materials (polyaniline, polyvinylidene fluoride). Promising alternatives to traditional short-wave UV-C energy for disinfection include LED and Far-UVC irradiation systems. Additionally, research explores the use of TiO 2 and TiO 2 doped with metals (Ag, Cu, Pt) in filters with photocatalytic properties, enabling the utilization of visible or solar light. Hybrid photocatalysis, combining TiO 2 with polymers, carbon nanomaterials, or MXene nanomaterials, enhances the photocatalytic process. Chemical treatment systems such as aerosolization of biocidal agents (benzalkonium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide or ozone) with their possible combination with other technologies such as adsorption, filtration or photocatalysis, are also tested for gas disinfection. In this work, it is studied the photolysis, electrolysis, and photo-electrolysis of a mixture of pharmaceutics (sulfadiazine, naproxen, diclofenac, ketoprofen and ibuprofen) contained in two very different types of real water matrices (obtained from surface and porewater reservoirs), trying to clarify the role of the matrix on the degradation of the pollutants. To do this, a new metrological approach was also developed for screening of pharmaceuticals in waters by capillary liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (CLC-MS). This allows the detection at concentrations lower than 10 ng mL -1 . Results obtained in the degradation tests demonstrate that inorganic composition of the water matrix directly influences on the efficiency of the drugs removal by the different EAOPs and better degradation results were obtained for experiments carried out with surface water. The most recalcitrant drug studied was ibuprofen for all processes evaluated, while diclofenac and ketoprofen were found to be the easiest drugs for being degraded. Photo-electrolysis was found to be more efficient than photolysis and electrolysis, and the increase in the current density was found to attain a slight improvement in the removal although with an associated huge increase in the energy consumption. The composition and concentration of airborne microorganisms in hospital indoor air has been reported to contain airborne bacteria and fungi concentrations ranged 10 1 -10 3  CFU/m 3 in inpatients facilities which mostly exceed recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO). In this work, a deeper knowledge of the performance of airborne microorganisms would allow improving the designs of the air-conditioning installations to restrict hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). A solution containing Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a model of airborne bacteria was nebulized using the Collison nebulizer to simulate bioaerosols in various hospital areas such as patients' rooms or bathrooms. Results showed that the bioaerosol source had a significant influence on the airborne bacteria concentrations since 4.00 10 2 , 6.84 10 3 and 1.39 10 4  CFU mL -1 were monitored during the aerosolization for 10 min of urine, saliva and urban wastewater, respectively. These results may be explained considering the quite narrow distribution profile of drop sizes around 1.10-1.29 μm obtained for urban wastewater, with much vaster distribution profiles during the aerosolization of urine or saliva. The airborne bacteria concentration may increase up to 10 7  CFU mL -1 for longer sampling times and higher aerosolization pressures, causing several cell damages. The cell membrane damage index (I D ) can vary from 0 to 1, depending on the genomic DNA releases from bacteria. In fact, the I D of E. coli was more than two times higher (0.33 vs. 0.72) when increasing the pressure of air flow was applied from 1 to 2 bar. Finally, the ventilation air flow also affected the distribution of bioaerosols due to its direct relationship with the relative humidity of indoor air. In this work, data obtained from the University Hospital Complex of Albacete (Spain) were selected as a case study to carry out the disinfection experiments. To do this, different configurations of electrochemical reactors were tested for the disinfection of complex urines. Results showed that 4-6 logs bacterial removal were achieved for every bacterium tested when working with a microfluidic flow-through reactor after 180 min (0.423 Ah dm -3 ). The MIKROZON® cell reached a total disinfection after 60 min (1.212 Ah dm -3 ), causing severe damages induced in the cell walls observed in SEM images. The concentration profiles of the electrogenerated disinfectants in solution could explain the differences observed. Additionally, a mean decrease in the ARGs concentration ranked as follows: bla KPC (4.18-logs) > bla TEM (3.96-logs) > ermB (3.23-logs) using the MIKROZON® cell. This electro-ozonizer could be considered as a suitable alternative to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance spread. Hence, this study provides an insight into different electrochemical reactors for the disinfection of complex hospital urine matrices and contributes to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance through the elimination of ARGs. In this work, it is evaluated the fixation of carbon dioxide using the alkali generated in the chloralkaline process, as a new way to face the treatment of highly saline wastewater, in which it is aimed not to separate the wastewater into concentrated and diluted streams but to recover value-added products (VAPs) while contributing to minimize the carbon fingerprint of other processes. The electrolytic process is combined with a reactive absorption and with a crystallization, demonstrating the formation of pure nahcolite, hypochlorite (or chlorine) and hydrogen from the waste. Carbon dioxide is captured with a current efficiency over 90% and the energy required is around 0.65 kWh kg -1 , which is very promising from the view point of sustainability, considering that the system can be easily powered with green energies., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. The occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in water bodies poses a sanitary and environmental risk. These ARB and other mobile genetic elements can be easily spread from hospital facilities, the point in which, for sure, they are more concentrated. For this reason, novel clean and efficient technologies are being developed for allowing to remove these ARB and other mobile genetic elements before their uncontrolled spread. In this paper, a review on the recent knowledge about the state of the art of the main disinfection technologies to control the antibiotic resistance spread from natural water, wastewater, and hospital wastewater (including urine matrices) is reported. These technologies involve not only conventional processes, but also the recent advances on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). The inefficiency of conventional biological processes to remove pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) in wastewater is leading to their accumulation in aquatic environments. These compounds are characterized by high toxicity, high antibiotic activity and low biodegradability, and their presence is causing serious environmental risks. Because much of the PhCs consumed by humans are excreted in the urine, hospital effluents have been considered one of the main routes of entry of PhCs into the environment. In this work, a critical review of the technologies employed for the removal of PhCs in hospital wastewater was carried out. This review provides an overview of the current state of the developed technologies for decreasing the chemical risks associated with the presence of PhCs in hospital wastewater or urine in the last years, including conventional treatments (filtration, adsorption, or biological processes), advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs).

This work focuses on the removal of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) contained in hospital urines by UV disinfection enhanced by electrochemical oxidation to overcome the limitations of both single processes in the disinfection of this type of effluents. UV disinfection, electrolysis, and photoelectrolysis of synthetic hospital urine intensified with K. pneumoniae were studied. The influence of the current density and the anode material was assessed on the disinfection performance of combined processes and the resulting synergies and/or antagonisms of coupling both technologies were also evaluated. Results show that the population of bacteria contained in hospital urine is only reduced by 3 orders of magnitude during UV disinfection. Electrolysis leads to complete disinfection of hospital urine when working at 50 A m -2 using Boron Doped Diamond (BDD) and Mixed Metal Oxides (MMO) as anodes. The coupling of electrolysis to the UV disinfection process leads to the highest disinfection rates, attaining a complete removal of ARB for all the current densities and anode materials tested. The use of MMO anodes leads to higher synergies than BDD electrodes. Cloud computing has emerged as a cutting-edge technology which is widely used by both private and public institutions, since it eliminates the capital expense of buying, maintaining, and setting up both hardware and software. Clients pay for the services they use, under the so-called Service Level Agreements (SLAs), which are the contracts that establish the terms and costs of the services. In this paper, we propose the CloudCost UML profile, which allows the modeling of cloud architectures and the users' behavior when they interact with the cloud to request resources. We then investigate how to increase the profits of cloud infrastructures by using price schemes. For this purpose, we distinguish between two types of users in the SLAs: regular and high-priority users . Regular users do not require a continuous service, so they can wait to be attended to. In contrast, high-priority users require a constant and immediate service, so they pay a greater price for their services. In addition, a computer-aided design tool, called MSCC (Modeling SLAs Cost Cloud), has been implemented to support the CloudCost profile, which enables the creation of specific cloud scenarios, as well as their edition and validation. The treatment of hospital wastewater is very complex, so treating polluted human urine is a significant challenge. Here, we tested a novel MMO-Ti/RuO 2 IrO 2 electrode to reduce the ecotoxicity risk of hospital urines contaminated with antibiotics. This electrode was used as the anode in electro-Fenton (EF) and photoelectro-Fenton (PhEF) processes. The results were compared with those obtained using the boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode, as well as those obtained by a conventional Fenton oxidation. In order to analyze the performance of the processes, the treatments were evaluated on the subject of Penicilin G (PenG) removal, toxicity (using a standardized method with Vibrio Fisheri), and antibiotic activity (Enterococcus faecalis as the target bacterium). The results reveal that PenG degrades in the following order: Fenton < EF < PhEF. The best results are found for the MMO-PhEF, which completely removed PenG, decreased 96% of toxicity, and completely removed antibiotic activity. Besides, for comparison, tests were performed with BDD, and results point out the higher convenience of the new electrode in terms of acceptable use of energy because the effluents generated can be further degraded in an urban wastewater treatment plant. This work focuses on the development of electro-absorption and photoelectro-absorption technologies to treat gases produced by a synthetic waste containing the highly volatile perchloroethylene (PCE). To do this, a packed absorption column coupled with a UV lamp and an undivided electrooxidation cell was used. Firstly, it was confirmed that the absorption in a packed column is a viable method to achieve retention of PCE into an absorbent-electrolyte liquid. It was observed that PCE does not only absorb but it was also transformed into phosgene and other by-products. Later, it was confirmed that the electro-absorption process influenced the PCE degradation, favoring the transformation of phosgene into final products. Opposite to what is expected, carbon dioxide is not the main product obtained, but carbon tetrachloride and trichloroacetic acid. Both species are also hazardous but their higher solubility in water opens possibilities for a successful and more environmental-friendly removal. The coupling with UV-irradiation has a negative impact on the degradation of phosgene. Finally, a reaction mechanism was proposed for the degradation of PCE based on the experimental observations. Results were not as expected during the planning of the experimental work but it is important to take in mind that PCE decomposition occurs in wet conditions, regardless of the applied technology, and this work is a first approach to try to solve the treatment problems associated to PCE gaseous waste flows in a realistic way.

The aim of this work is to compare three biological strategies for the in situ remediation of a 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) polluted clayey soil by coupling electrokinetics (EK) and bioremediation (technology named as electrobioremediation, EBR). The first option (i) is EK-biostimulation, in which the activity of microorganisms already present in soil is enhanced by EK phenomena. The second and third options are EK-bioaugmentation, which consist of addition of microorganisms to soil through the inclusion of permeable biological barriers: (ii) using a microbial fixed biofilm reactor as biobarrier (BB1), and (iii) using a mixture of clean soil and a microbial suspension as biobarrier (BB2). Thus, three batch experiments at bench scale were conducted under a constant electric field of 1 V cm -1 , and electrode polarity was periodically reversed every 12 h (2 d -1 ). The duration of each test was 10 days. Two additional tests using only biodegradation or only EK were performed as auxiliary reference tests. A microbial consortium acclimated to 2,4-D biodegradation was employed. Results showed that EK-biostimulation strategy offered the best pollutant removal efficiency (reaching up almost 100%) while biobarriers offered pollutant removal rates between 75 and 85%. Permeable biobarriers allowed the introduction of microorganism but caused a decrease in the electro-osmotic flow which, in turn, reduced the mobilization and contact between microorganisms and pollutants. These results can contribute to the knowledge and understanding of electrobioremediation of polluted soil and to the feasibility of delivering microorganism to the soil by using biobarriers. The objective of this study is to understand the influence of the characteristics of boron-doped diamond anodes on the degradation of Penicillin G contained in urine. Therefore, five commercial BDD anodes with different boron doping levels (100 ppm - 8000 ppm) were studied. These electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and electrolysis. The boron doping was found to correlate well with the electrochemical properties of the electrodes, and results indicate a different behavior in drug degradation. The improvement in the toxicity and the reduction of the antibiotic effect of urine were the most innovative inputs monitored. For this, the concentration of Penicillin G, the toxicity toward Vibrio fisheri, and the antibiotic effect in Enterococcus faecalis were monitored. The best results were found for the BDD with a boron content of 200 ppm, capable of removing 100% of the antibiotic, reducing toxicity by 90%, and eradicating the antibiotic effect. This work focuses on improving the biodegradability of hospital urines polluted with antibiotics by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). To do this, chloramphenicol (CAP) has been used as a model compound and the influence of anodic material (Boron Doped Diamond (BDD) and Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO)) and current density (1.25-5 mA cm -2 ) on the toxicity and the biodegradability was evaluated. Results show that a complete CAP removal was attained using BDD anodes, being the process more efficient at the lowest current density tested (1.25 mA cm -2 ). Conversely, after passing 4 Ah dm -3 , only 35% of CAP removal is reached using MMO anodes, regardless of the current density applied. Furthermore, a kinetic study demonstrated that there is a clear competitive oxidation between the target antibiotic and the organic compounds naturally contained in urine, regardless the current density and the anode material used. During the first stages of the electrolysis, acute toxicity is around 1% EC 50 but it increases once CAP and its organic intermediates have been degraded. The formation and accumulation of inorganic oxidants may justify the remaining acute toxicity. This also helps to explain the trend observed in the rapid biodegradability assays. This work focuses on the evaluation of the electrochemical dewatering of sludge obtained in the coagulation of wastes polluted with oxyfluorfen. To do this, sludge samples were treated, aiming not only to reduce the sludge volume, but also to facilitate the degradation of oxyfluorfen contained in the cake via electrolysis with a boron-doped diamond anode. Results show that water can be effectively recovered through three sequential stages. First, a gravity-driven stage, that can recover around 60% of initial volume and where no oxyfluorfen is dragged. Then, a second stage that involves the application of pressure and which accounts for the recuperation of an additional 25% of the total volume of the water removed and in which oxyfluorfen also remained in the cake. Finally, an electrochemical stage, which involves the application of electricity with increasing electric fields (1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 16.0 V cm -1 ), accounting for the recovery of the rest of water released and where an electrolytic degradation of oxyfluorfen is obtained, whose extension depends on the electrode configuration used in the electro-dewatering cell. This paper focuses on the removal of lindane from soil washing effluents (SWEs) using combined electrochemical -biological processes. In particular, it has been evaluated the influence of the anodic material used in the electrolysis of the SWE on the biodegradability and toxicity of the effluents. Four anode materials were tested: Boron Doped Diamond (BDD), Carbon Felt (CF), and Mixed Metal Oxides Anodes with iridium and ruthenium (MMO-Ir and MMO-Ru). These materials were tested at different current densities and electric current charges applied. Lindane, TOC, sulphate, and chlorine species concentrations were monitored during electrochemical experiments, showing important differences in their evolution during the treatment. In spite of reaching a good removal of lindane with all the materials tested, results showed that Boron Doped Diamond working at 15 mA cm -2 achieved the best biodegradability results in the electrolyzed effluents, because the ratio BOD 5 /COD increased from 0.2 to 0.5, followed by Carbon Felt anode. Regarding toxicity, Carbon Felt decreased toxicity by 80%. Electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) has been recently proposed for the removal of pesticides from polluted soils. In this work, we report the results from an EKPR experiment that was carried out in a mesocosm mock-up of 0.386 m 3 using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and a low permeability soil spiked with atrazine. Plants were initially grown for 35 days; then, the soil was spiked with atrazine at a dose of 2 mg kg -1 soil. A DC electrical field of 0.6 V cm -1 was applied 24 h every day, switching polarity daily. Another identical mock-up with the same experimental conditions but without plants was used for comparison purposes. The duration of the EKPR test was 19 days during which some operational parameters were registered (electric current intensity, soil pH and temperature) and soil porewater samples were taken and analysed. Plant tissues and soil samples from the different sections in which the mock-ups were divided, were also collected and analysed at the end of the experiment. 3-D profiles of soil pH, water content and atrazine residues concentration in plants and soil were obtained and discussed. The results of this experiment were compared with others previously reported by us from a similar EKPR pot test. In spite of the difficulties to get an adequate geometric and operational similarity between setups of different scale, the main output parameters of the EKPR process (electric current, specific current charge, overall atrazine removal, specific atrazine removal efficiency, root biomass:soil weight ratio) were discussed. This work focuses on the partial anodic electro-oxidation of atrazine-polluted soil washing effluents (SWE) in order to reduce its toxicity and to improve its biodegradability. Concretely it has been evaluated the influence of the anodic material used. It is hypothesized that such partial oxidation step could be considered as a pre-treatment for a subsequent biological treatment. At first, atrazine was extracted from a polluted soil by means of a surfactant-aided soil-washing process. Then, four different anodic materials were studied in partial electro-oxidation pre-treatment batch experiments at different electric charges applied: Boron Doped Diamond (BDD), Carbon Felt (CF), and Mixed Metal Oxides Anodes with Iridium and Ruthenium. Atrazine, TOC, surfactant and sulphate species concentrations, as well as changes in toxicity and biodegradability, were monitored during electrochemical experiments, showing important differences in their evolution during the treatment. It was observed that BDD was the most powerful anodic material to completely degrade atrazine. The other materials achieve an atrazine degradation rate about 75%. Regarding mineralization of the organics in SWE, BDD overtakes clearly the rest of anodes tested. CF obtains good atrazine removal but low mineralization results. All the anodes tested slightly reduced the ecotoxicity of the water effluents. About the biodegradability, only the effluent obtained after the pre-treatment with BDD presented a high biodegradability. In this sense, it must be highlighted the mineralization obtained during the BDD pre-treatment was very strong. These results globally indicate that it is necessary to find a compromise between reaching efficient atrazine removal and biodegradability improvement, while also simultaneously avoiding strong mineralization. Significance of surface and ground water contamination by synthetic organic compounds has been pointed out in a very high number of papers worldwide, as well as the need of application of treatment technologies capable to assure their complete removal. Among these processes, the electrochemical advanced oxidation is an interesting option, especially when irradiated with UVC light (photo-electrochemical, P-EC) to promote homolysis of electrogenerated oxidants. In this work, the herbicide glyphosate (GLP) was used as model compound and it was electrochemically treated under UVC irradiation in the presence of NaCl and using a DSA® and BDD anodes. Total organic carbon concentration was measured throughout the electrolysis, as well as the concentration of short chain carboxylic acids and inorganic ions (NO 3 - , PO 4 3- ,ClO - , ClO 3 - and ClO 4 - ). The synergism of the P-EC was more pronounced when using a DSA® electrode, which led to complete GLP mineralization in 1 h (0.52 A h L -1 ), as also confirmed by the stoichiometric formation of NO 3 - and PO 4 3- ions, with an energy consumption as low as 1.25 kW h g -1 . Unexpectedly, the concentration evolution of oxyhalides for the P-EC process using both anodes, especially for DSA® at 10 mA cm -2 , showed the production of ClO 3 - , whereas detection of ClO 4 - species was only found when using BDD at 100 mA cm -2 for the electrochemical process. A comparison between the performance of electrolysis of three different soil-washing wastes with platinum and boron doped diamond (BDD) anodes is carried out in this work. Results demonstrate that the treatment is more efficient with BDD for perchloroethylene and clopyralid but not for the case of lindane, because in this case there is a competitive oxidation between lindane and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate used to extract this pollutant from soil. First order kinetics are observed in each compound with higher removal at the early stages and generally better results are obtained when using BDD as anode. The evolution of pH and a voltammetry study indicate a higher direct oxidation rate in the case of platinum and more importance of hydroxyl radical mediated processes with diamond anodes. In this work, the valorization of brines, with concentrations similar to those produced by reverse osmosis or electrodialysis processes, by electrolysis with diamond anodes is evaluated. To do this, synthetic brines made from solutions of NaCl (with target concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 M and an additional test at 5.0 M) were used as the raw material for the electrochemical production of perchlorate using commercial electrochemical cells equipped with boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes. The effect of key parameters on the rate and efficiency of perchlorate production was evaluated. The results show that it is possible to transform more than 80% of the initial chloride concentration into perchlorate, with current efficiencies higher than 70% regardless of the initial concentration of sodium chloride contained in the brine. Moreover, it was observed that both hypochlorite and chlorate were produced almost simultaneously at the beginning of electrolysis, while perchlorate was only produced when a certain value of applied electric charge was passed through the system. The results obtained were essentially independent of the concentration of NaCl, as the high concentrations used in this study avoided mass transfer limitations. Moreover, the specific energy cost of perchlorate production was estimated to range from 26.14 kWh kg -1 (for 2.0 M and 1000 A m -2 ) to 56.10 kWh kg -1 (for 1.0 M and 2000 A m -2 ). According to the results obtained, the electrochemical production of perchlorate by BDD electrochemical oxidation stands out as a promising novel technology for the valorization of the brine produced in reverse osmosis or electrodialysis processes., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Oxyfluorfen is a non-polar herbicide that may cause severe soil pollution. The present work studies the possible improvement due to surfactant addition in the efficiency of electro-bioremediation of a clay soil polluted which such a non-polar, low-mobility pollutant. Two-week-long batch electro-bioremediation experiments were performed in a bench-scale device. Oxyfluorfen-polluted soil (20 mg kg -1 ) was inoculated with an acclimated microbial culture, and several experiments were performed using different surfactant concentrations in the electrode wells (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 g L -1 of SDS, sodium dodecyl sulphate). Experiments were performed under 1.0 V cm -1 and electrode polarity reversal. It was observed that the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) increased with SDS concentration and that SDS was successfully distributed across the soil, probably improving the oxyfluorfen mobility. Additionally, microbiological activity was fully maintained during the experiments. Electro-bioremediation without SDS removed 14% of the oxyfluorfen, while under 2.5 g L -1 SDS, the efficiency increased to 22% because of an expected improvement in the contact between the different species in the soil. However, higher SDS concentrations (between 10.0 and 20.0 g L -1 ) caused a decrease in the oxyfluorfen removal efficiency, as SDS is an easily biodegradable compound and was preferably used as substrate by the microbial culture instead of oxyfluorfen. Additionally, the use of high concentrations of SDS was clearly inefficient, as high amounts of the surfactant were lost through the EOF, and even low amounts of oxyfluorfen were removed to the electrode wells, which means that ex situ treatment of the polluted water would be needed., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have garnered interest from the scientific community since the beginning of this century and this has caused a considerable increase in the scientific production of MFCs. However, the ability of MFCs to generate power has not increased considerably within this timeframe. In recent years, the power generated by MFCs has remained at an almost contact level owing to difficulties in the scale-up of the technology and thus the application of MFCs for powering systems with high energy demands will not be fully developed, at least within a short temporal horizon. Scale-up by increasing the size of the electrodes has failed, because of the wrong assumption that a linear function describes the relationship between the amount of power generated by a MFC and its size. However, more efficient energy generation upon working with small MFCs has been described. This has led to a new approach for scaling up on the basis of miniaturization and replication. Then, MFCs can be connected electrically in series to increase the overall potential and in parallel to increase the overall current. However, cell-voltage reversal and ionic short-circuit issues must be solved for this approach to be successful. Nowadays, the applicability of MFC technology in wastewater treatment does not make any sense in light of the power levels reached, despite the fact that MFCs were seen as a paramount opportunity less than a decade ago. Fluoxil-24 is a commercial herbicide based on oxyfluorfen (a hazardous non-soluble organochlorinated compound) and additional compounds used as solvents. The aim of this work is to study the biotreatability of this commercial herbicide in water through batch experiments performed at different temperatures (15, 20, 25 and 30 °C) and initial concentrations (85, 150, 300 and 500 mg L -1 of oxyfluorfen). Activated sludge from an oil refinery wastewater treatment plant was acclimated and used for biodegradation experiments. Two main mechanisms, volatilization and biodegradation, were observed to be responsible of the herbicide removal. Fluoxil-24 removal efficiencies between approximately 40% and 80% were reached after 70 h, depending on the conditions used, and oxyfluorfen was not completely removed. Regarding the influence of the temperature, thermal inhibition problems appeared at 30 °C, and the volatilization rate of solvents increased, causing oxyfluorfen to become unavailable for microorganisms. An increase of herbicide initial concentration did not clearly affect the herbicide removal efficiency, whereas it negatively affected the biological mechanism. The experimental results were fitted to a mathematical model that included both simultaneous mechanisms of volatilization and Monod biodegradation kinetics. An electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation test using maize (Zea mays L.) was conducted in order to assess the role of the electric field on the enhancement of plant uptake and degradation of the moderate polar pesticide atrazine in spiked soils. Twelve different treatments, including two different initial atrazine soil doses (5 and 10 mg kg -1 ) and two different values of the electric field applied (2 and 4 V cm -1 ), together with the corresponding control treatments without plants and/or without electric current, were tested. The application of an electric field during a period of 4 h a day and with periodical polarity inversion (each 2 h) did not caused significant changes in soil pH; moreover, maize plants increased the buffering capacity of the soil. The application of an electric field of 2 V cm -1 led to a slight decrease on maize biomass while the accumulation of atrazine and its main metabolites in plant tissues was significantly enhanced. On the overall, the yield of atrazine removal by electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation with maize was increased up to 36.5% with respect to the phytoremediation process without electricity. In this work, the disinfection of highly faecal-polluted surface water was studied using a new electrochemical cell (CabECO ® cell, manufactured by CONDIAS) specifically designed to produce ozone in water with very low conductivity. The disinfection tests were carried out in a discontinuous mode to evaluate the influence of the electrode current charge passed. The effect of the current density was also studied in order to optimize the disinfection conditions and to simultaneously prevent the formation of undesirable by-products (chlorates and perchlorates) during the electrolysis. The results demonstrate that this technology is robust and efficient, and it can suitably disinfect water. During electrolysis, the chloride contained in the water was oxidized to hypochlorite, and this compound was combined with ammonia to form chloramines. Both hypochlorite and chloramines (formed by the well-known break point reaction) promoted persistent disinfection and seemed to be mainly responsible for the disinfection attained during the electrochemical process. Chlorate and perchlorate could also be produced, although the low concentrations of chloride in the tested water made them irrelevant. The removal of the total organic carbon under the applied operating conditions was not very efficient (although it reached 50% in 2 h) and the production of trihalomethanes was very low, below 100 ppb for all tests., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Boron doped diamond (BDD) anode has been used to oxidatively remove Rhodamine B (RhB), as persistent organic pollutant, from synthetic wastewater by electrolysis, photoelectrolysis and chemical oxidation containing sulfate and phosphate as supporting electrolytes. RhB is effectively oxidized by electrolysis and by chemical oxidation with the oxidants separately produced by electrolyzing sulfate or phosphate solutions (peroxodisulfate and peroxodiphosphate, respectively). The results showed that light irradiation improved the electrolysis of RhB due to the activation of oxidants under irradiation at high current densities. The performance of miniaturized microbial fuel cells operating with five different substrates (acetate, lactate, glucose and octanoate) were studied with the aim to identify the reason for its different performance. In all cases, the COD removal rate was about 650 mg COD L -1 d -1 . However, the bio-electrochemical performance of the MFC was very different, showing the MFC fed with acetate the best performance: 20 A m -2 as maximum current density, 2 W m -2 of maximum power density, 0.376 V of OCV and 12.6% of CE. In addition, the acetate showed the best bio-electrochemical performance in the polarization curves and cyclic voltammetries. These polarization curves were modelled and the key to explain the better electrical performance of acetate was its lower ohmic losses. When working with acetate, its ohmic losses were one log-unit below those attained by the other substrates. These lower ohmic losses were not associated to the electrolyte conductivity of the fuel but to the lower ohmic loses of the biofilm generated., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

This work focuses on the treatment of synthetic wastewater polluted with dye Procion Red MX-5B by different Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOP) based on diamond anodes. The influence of the current density and the supporting electrolyte has been studied on dye removal and total mineralization of the organic matter. Results show that electrolysis with diamond electrodes is a suitable technology for an efficient degradation of dye. Nonetheless, the process efficiency increases when using chloride as supporting electrolyte because of the electrochemical generation of hypochlorite in wastewater which significantly contribute to dye removal. On the contrary, the total mineralization of the organic matter is more efficient in sulfate media. In this case, large amounts of peroxodisulfate are electrogenerated, favoring the complete removal of total organic carbon (TOC). On the other hand, lower current densities (10 mA cm -2 ) lead to a more efficient removal of both dye and TOC due to the mass transfer limitations of the technology. Finally, the coupling of UV light irradiation or ultrasound to electrolysis significantly improves the process performance, being photoelectrolysis the most efficient technology for the treatment of wastewater polluted with Procion Red MX-5B. This fact is due to the potential production of free chlorine or sulfate radicals that takes place by the activation of the electrogenerated oxidants. In this work, a combination of electrochemical and biological technologies is proposed to remove clopyralid from Soil Washing Effluents (SWE). Firstly, soil washing was carried out to extract clopyralid from soil. After that, four different anodes-Ir-MMO, Ru-MMO, pSi-BDD and Carbon Felt (CF)-were evaluated in order to increase the biodegradability of the SWE. CF was selected because was the only one able to transform the pesticide to a more biodegradable compounds without completely mineralizing it. Finally, biological oxidation tests were performed to determine the aerobic biodegradability of the SWE generated. From the obtained results, it was observed that at the beginning of the electrolysis the toxicity slightly increased and the biodegradability decreases. However, for electric current charges over 2.5 A·h dm -3 the toxicity drastically decreased, showing an EC 50 of 143 mg L -1 , and the BOD 5 /COD ratio increased from 0.02 to 0.23., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Hospital effluents are a major source for the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment. In this work, the treatment of synthetic urine polluted with chloramphenicol is studied by using three different conductive-diamond electrochemical oxidation technologies: electrolysis (single electrolysis), photoelectrolysis and high-frequency ultrasound sonoelectrolysis. These technologies were evaluated at 10 and 100 mA cm -2 . Results shows that not only chloramphenicol but also other organics contained in urine are completely mineralized by electrolysis. Ammonium is the main inorganic nitrogen species formed and it can react with the electrogenerated hypochlorite, favouring the formation of chloramines. These species prevent the potential formation of perchlorate from chlorides contained in urine at low current densities (10 mA cm -2 ) and delay its occurrence at high current densities (100 mA cm -2 ). On the other hand, irradiation of ultraviolet (UV) light or high-frequency ultrasound (US) produce changes in the performance of the electrolytic treatment, but these changes are not as important as in other cases of study shown in the literature. Nonetheless, the effect of electroirradiated technologies seems to be higher and depends on the type of pollutant when working at low current densities (10 mA cm -2 ). It is positive in the case of the degradation of the antibiotic and the uric acid and negative in the case of urea where there is a clear antagonistic effect. Production of oxidants increases with the current density although in lower ratio than expected. These results are of great importance because clearly point out that electrolytic technologies can be applied to minimize the diffuse pollution associated to pharmaceuticals before discharge into municipal sewers., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Pollution of soil and groundwater by atrazine has become an increasing environmental concern in the last decade. A phytoremediation test using plastic pots was conducted in order to assess the ability of several crops and grasses to remove atrazine from a soil of low permeability spiked with this herbicide. Four plant species were assessed for their ability to degrade or accumulate atrazine from soils: two grasses, i.e., ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), and two crops, i.e., barley (Hordeum vulgare) and maize (Zea mays). Three different doses of atrazine were used for the contamination of the pots: 2, 5 and 10 mg kg -1 . 16 days after spiking, the initial amount of atrazine was reduced by 88.6-99.6% in planted pots, while a decrease of only 63.1-78.2% was found for the unplanted pots, thus showing the contribution of plants to soil decontamination. All the plant species were capable of accumulating atrazine and its N-dealkylated metabolites, i.e., deethylatrazine and deisopropylatrazine, in their tissues. Some toxic responses, such as biomass decreases and/or chlorosis, were observed in plants to a greater or lesser extent for initial soil doses of atrazine above 2 mg kg -1 . Maize was the plant species with the highest ability to accumulate atrazine derivatives, reaching up to 38.4% of the initial atrazine added to the soil. Rhizosphere degradation/mineralization by microorganisms or plant enzymes, together with degradation inside the plants, have been proposed as the mechanisms that contributed to a higher extent than plant accumulation to explain the removal of atrazine from soils., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. This work studies the feasibility of the periodic polarity reversal strategy (PRS) in a combined electrokinetic-biological process for the remediation of clayey soil polluted with a herbicide. Five two-weeks duration electrobioremediation batch experiments were performed in a bench scale set-up using spiked clay soil polluted with oxyfluorfen (20 mg kg -1 ) under potentiostatic conditions applying an electric field between the electrodes of 1.0 V cm -1 (20.0 V) and using PRS with five frequencies (f) ranging from 0 to 6 d -1 . Additionally, two complementary reference tests were done: single bioremediation and single electrokinetic. The microbial consortium used was obtained from an oil refinery wastewater treatment plant and acclimated to oxyfluorfen degradation. Main soil conditions (temperature, pH, moisture and conductivity) were correctly controlled using PRS. On the contrary, the electroosmotic flow clearly decreased as f increased. The uniform soil microbial distribution at the end of the experiments indicated that the microbial activity remained in every parts of the soil after two weeks when applying PRS. Despite the adapted microbial culture was capable of degrade 100% of oxyfluorfen in water, the remediation efficiency in soil in a reference test, without the application of electric current, was negligible. However, under the low voltage gradients and polarity reversal, removal efficiencies between 5% and 15% were obtained, and it suggested that oxyfluorfen had difficulties to interact with the microbial culture or nutrients and that PRS promoted transport of species, which caused a positive influence on remediation. This paper analyzes the advantages and drawbacks of the combination of UV irradiation with electrolysis with the aim to give insight about the feasibility of the application of this technology for the reclaiming of conventionally-treated wastewater. The oxidation of synthetic solutions containing five selected model complex pollutants has been compared, showing that UV irradiation improves the results of electrolysis for progesterone, metoprolol and caffeine and deteriorates the performance for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole and dimethyl-phthalate. Differences observed becomes lower when mineralization is compared showing that the effects of UV irradiation are diluted when a mixture of species is oxidized. Results suggest that high ThOD/TOC (Theoretical Oxygen Demand/Total Organic Carbon) ratios improve the synergistic coupling of technologies while low values lead to a clear antagonistic effect. Because during oxidation progress this ratio is decreased, the observed effect on mineralization is much lower than in the oxidation of the raw molecule. Opposite to this low effect on the oxidation of organics, the improvement in the performance of the disinfection by coupling UV to electrolysis is much clearer. In addition, UV irradiation modifies significantly the chlorine speciation and helps to prevent the formation of hazardous species such as chlorate and perchlorate during the electrochemical processes., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. This work focuses on the disinfection actual urban wastewater by the combination of ultrasound (US) irradiation and electrodisinfection with Dimensionally Stable Anodes (DSA). First, the inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) during the sonochemical disinfection was studied at increasing ultrasound power. Results showed that it was not possible to achieve a complete disinfection, even at the highest US power (200 W) dosed by the experimental device used. Next, the electrodisinfection with DSA anodes at different current densities was studied, finding that it was necessary a minimum current density of 11.46 A m(-2) to reach the complete disinfection. Finally, an integrated sonoelectrodisinfection process was studied. Results showed a synergistic effect when coupling US irradiation with DSA electrodisinfection, with a synergy coefficient higher than 200% of the disinfection rate attained for the highest US power applied. In this process, hypochlorite and chloramines were identified as the main reagents for the disinfection process (neither chlorate nor perchlorate were detected), and the presence of trihalomethanes was far below acceptable values. Confirming this synergistic effect with DSA anodes opens the door to novel efficient disinfection processes, limiting the occurrence of hazardous disinfection by-products., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. This work focuses on the scale-up of electrochemical and photoelectrochemical oxidation processes with diamond anodes for the removal of organic pollutants and disinfection of treated urban wastewater, two of the most important parameters for the reclaiming of wastewater. The removal of organics was studied with actual biologically treated urban wastewater intensified with 100 mg dm(-3) of caffeine, added as a trace organic pollutant. The disinfection was also studied with biologically treated urban wastewater, and Escherichia coli was used to monitor the efficiency of the process. Results obtained with a single DiaCell® 101 were compared with those obtained with a single-stack DiaCell® 1001 and with a pilot plant made up of five of these stacks. Results obtained demonstrate that scale-up is not a simple but a very complex process, in which not only the electrode and the irradiation dose are important but also mass transfer conditions. Enhanced mass transport conditions have a determining and very positive effect on the removal of organics and a negative effect on the disinfection. Likewise, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation affects in a different way in the different setups used, having a great influence on the removal of complex organics and on the speciation of oxidants produced during disinfection. This works helps to understand the key differences observed in the scale-up, and it is a first approach for future works focused on the real application of conductive diamond electrochemical oxidation.

This study analyses the effect of the scale-up of electrokinetic remediation (EKR) processes in natural soils. A procedure is proposed to prepare soils based on a compacting process to obtaining soils with similar moisture content and density to those found in real soils in the field. The soil used here was from a region with a high agrarian activity (Mora, Spain). The scale-up study was performed in two installations at different scales: a mock-up pilot scale (0.175m(3)) and a prototype with a scale that was very similar to a real application (16m(3)). The electrode configuration selected consisted of rows of graphite electrodes facing each other located in electrolyte wells. The discharge of 20mg of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid [2,4-D] per kg of dry soil was treated by applying an electric potential gradient of 1Vcm(-1). An increase in scale was observed to directly influence the amount of energy supplied to the soil being treated. As a result, electroosmotic and electromigration flows and electric heating are more intense than in smaller-scale tests (24%, 1% and 25%, respectively respect to the values in prototype). This work evaluates the use of carbon nanospheres (CNS) in microporous layers (MPL) of high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) electrodes and compares the characteristics and performance with those obtained using conventional MPL based on carbon black. XRD, hydrophobicity, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller theory, and gas permeability of MPL prepared with CNS were the parameters evaluated. In addition, a short life test in a fuel cell was carried out to evaluate performance under accelerated stress conditions. The results demonstrate that CNS is a promising alternative to traditional carbonaceous materials because of its high electrochemical stability and good electrical conductivity, suitable to be used in this technology., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The objective of this paper was to determine the influence of sludge age on microbial fuel cell (MFC) performance for generating electricity and removing organic matter from winery wastewater. Six Solid Retention Times (SRT) were used: 1.2, 1.4, 1.8, 2.3, 3.5 and 7.0 d. Results demonstrate that the electricity generation increases by decreasing the SRT, selecting electrogenic microorganisms, once the specific organic loading rate (SOLR) increased and the competition for substrate was reduced. Decreasing the SRT, coulombic efficiency can be increased from 3.4% to almost 42.2% and maximum power density from 58 to 890 mW m(-2). However the SRT did not influence on organic matter removal in biological treatment, because only a small part of COD was removed oscillating around 600 mg L(-1) d(-1)and it was very similar at all SRT studied., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. In this research, firstly, the treatment of soil spiked with oxyfluorfen was studied using a surfactant-aided soil-washing (SASW) process. After that, the electrochemical treatment of the washing liquid using boron doped diamond (BDD) anodes was performed. Results clearly demonstrate that SASW is a very efficient approach in the treatment of soil, removing the pesticide completely by using dosages below 5 g of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) per Kg of soil. After that, complete mineralization of organic matter (oxyflourfen, SDS and by-products) was attained (100% of total organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand removals) when the washing liquids were electrolyzed using BDD anodes, but the removal rate depends on the size of the particles in solution. Electrolysis of soil washing fluids occurs via the reduction in size of micelles until their complete depletion. Lower concentrations of intermediates are produced (sulfate, chlorine, 4-(trifluoromethyl)-phenol and ortho-nitrophenol) during BDD-electrolyzes. Electrokinetic processes provide the basis of a range of very interesting techniques for the remediation of polluted soils. These techniques consist of the application of a current field in the soil that develops different transport mechanisms capable of mobilizing several types of pollutants. However, the use of these techniques could generate nondesirable effects related to the geomechanical behavior of the soil, reducing the effectiveness of the processes. In the case of the remediation of polluted soils with plasticity index higher than 35, an excessive shrinkage can be observed in remediation test. For this reason, the continued evaporation that takes place in the sample top can lead to the development of cracks, distorting the electrokinetic transport regime, and consequently, the development of the operation. On the other hand, when analyzing silty soils, in the surroundings of injection surfactant wells, high seepages can be generated that give rise to the development of piping processes. In this article methods are described to allow a reduction, or to even eliminate, both problems.

In this work, it is studied the removal of atrazine from spiked soils by soil washing using surfactant fluids, followed by the treatment of the resulting washing waste by electrolysis with boron doped diamond (BDD) anode. Results confirm that combination of both technologies is efficient for the removal and total mineralization of atrazine. Ratio surfactant/soil is a key parameter for the removal of atrazine from soil and influences significantly in the characteristic of the wastewater produced, affecting not only to the total organic load but also to the mean size of micelles. The higher the ratio surfactant soil, the lower is the size of the particles. Electrolyses of this type of waste attain the complete mineralization. TOC and COD are removed from the start of the treatment but the key of the treatment is the reduction in size of the micelles, which lead to a higher negative charge in the surface and to the faster depletion of the surfactant as compared with the pesticide., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this work is to compare different strategies based on electrokinetic soil flushing and bioremediation for the remediation of diesel-polluted soil. Four options were tested at the laboratory scale: single bioremediation (Bio), performed as a control test; a direct combination of electrokinetic soil flushing and biological technologies (EKSF-Bio); EKSF-Bio with daily polarity reversal of the electric field (PR-EKSF-Bio); and a combination of electrokinetic soil flushing and a permeable reactive biological barrier (EKSF-BioPRB). Four batch experiments of 14 days duration were carried out for comparing technologies at room temperature with an electric field of 1.0 V cm(-1) (in EKSF). A diesel degrading microbial consortium was used. The experimental procedure and some specific details, such as the flushing fluids used, varied depending on the strategy. When using the EKSF-Bio option, a high buffer concentration was required to control the pH, causing soil heating, which negatively affected the biological growth and thus the diesel removal. The PR-EKSF-Bio and the EKSF-BioPRB options attained suitable operating conditions and improved the transport processes for biological growth. Polarity reversal was an efficient option for pH, moisture and temperature control. Homogeneous microbial growth was observed, and approximately 20% of the diesel was removed. The BioPRB option was not as efficient as PR-EKSF-Bio in controlling the operating conditions, but the central biobarrier protected the biological activity. In this work, the usefulness of Conductive Diamond Electrochemical Oxidation (CDEO) to degrade caffeine in real urban wastewater matrixes was assessed. The oxidation of actual wastewater intensified with caffeine (from 1 to 100 mg L(-1)) was studied, paying particular attention to the influence of the initial load of caffeine and the differences observed during the treatment of caffeine in synthetic wastewater. The results showed that CDEO is a technology that is capable of efficiently degrading this compound even at very low concentrations and that it can even be completely depleted. Profiles of the ionic species of S (SO4(2-)), N (NH4(+), NO3(-)) and Cl (ClO(-), ClO3(-) and ClO4(-)) were monitored and explained for plausible oxidation mechanisms. It was observed that the efficiency achieved is higher in the treatment of real wastewater than in the oxidation of synthetic wastewater because of the contribution of electrogenerated oxidant species such as hypochlorite. The formation of chlorate and perchlorate during electrochemical processes was observed, and a combined strategy to prevent this important drawback was successfully tested based on the application of low current densities with the simultaneous dosing of hydrogen peroxide., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of the oxygen availability over the performance of an air-breathing microbial fuel cell (MFC) was studied by limiting the oxygen supply to the cathode. It was found that anodic reaction was the limiting stage in the performance of the MFC while oxygen was fully available at cathode. As the cathode was depleted of oxygen, the current density becomes limited by oxygen transport to the electrode surface. The exerted current density was maintained when oxygen mole fraction was higher than 10% due to the very good performance of the cathodic catalysts. However, the current density drastically falls when working at lower concentrations because of mass transfer limitations. In this sense it must be highlighted that the maximum exerted power, when oxygen mole fraction was higher than 10%, was almost three times higher than that obtained when oxygen mole fraction was 5%. Regarding to the wastewater treatment, a significant decrease in the COD removal was obtained when the MFC performance was reduced due to the limited availability of oxygen, which indicates the significant role of the electrogenic microorganisms in the COD removal in MFC. In addition, the low availability of oxygen at the cathode leads to a lower presence of oxygen at the anode, resulting in an increase in the coulombic efficiency., (© 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.)

In this work, the electrochemical oxidation of synthetic urine by anodic oxidation using boron-doped diamond as anode and stainless steel as cathode was investigated. Results show that complete depletion of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) can be attained regardless of the current density applied in the range 20-100 mA cm(-2). Oxalic and oxamic acids, and, in lower concentrations, creatol and guanidine were identified as the main intermediates. Chloride ions play a very important role as mediators and contribute not only to obtain a high efficiency in the removal of the organics but also to obtain an efficient removal of nitrogen by the transformation of the various raw nitrogen species into gaseous nitrogen through chloramine formation. The main drawback of the technology is the formation of chlorates and perchlorates as final chlorine products. The increase of current density from 20 to 60 mA cm(-2) led to an increase in the rate of COD and TOC removals although the process becomes less efficient in terms of energy consumption (removals of COD and TOC after applying 18 Ah dm(-3) were 93.94 and 94.94 %, respectively, at 20 mA cm(-2) and 89.17 and 86.72 %, respectively, at 60 mA cm(-2)). The most efficient conditions are low current densities and high temperature reaching total mineralization at an applied charge as low as 20 kAh m(-3). This result confirmed that the electrolysis using diamond anodes is a very interesting technology for the treatment of urine.

Removal of diesel from spiked kaolin has been studied in the laboratory using coupled electrokinetic soil flushing (EKSF) and bioremediation through an innovative biological permeable reactive barriers (Bio-PRBs) positioned between electrode wells. The results show that this technology is efficient in the removal of pollutants and allows the soil to maintain the appropriate conditions for microorganism growth in terms of pH, temperature, and nutrients. At the same time, EKSF was demonstrated to be a very interesting technology for transporting pollutants, microorganisms and nutrients, although results indicate that careful management is necessary to avoid the depletion of nutrients, which are effectively transported by electro-migration. After two weeks of operation, 30% of pollutants are removed and energy consumption is under 70 kWh m(-3). Main fluxes (electroosmosis and evaporation) and changes in the most relevant parameters (nutrients, diesel, microorganisms, surfactants, moisture conductivity and pH) during treatment and in a complete post-study analysis are studied to give a comprehensive description of the most relevant processes occurring in the soil (pollutant transport and biodegradation)., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In the present work, the disinfection of actual effluents from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) by a conductive diamond sono-electrochemical process was assessed. First, efficiency of single electrodisinfection process with diamond anodes (without the contribution of ultrasounds) was studied, finding that the total disinfection can be attained at current charges applied below 0.02kAhm(-3). It was also found that the main disinfection mechanism is the attack of Escherichia coli (E. coli) by the disinfectants produced in the electrochemical cell and that the production of chlorates is avoided when working at current densities not higher than 1.27Am(-2). Next, a marked synergistic effect was found when coupling ultrasound (US) irradiation to the electrochemical system (sono-electrochemical disinfection). This work presents an integrated electrodisinfection/electrocoagulation (ED-EC) process for urban wastewater reuse that employs iron bipolar electrodes. Boron doped diamond (BDD) was used as the anode and stainless steel (SS) as the cathode. A perforated iron plate was introduced between the anode and cathode to function as a bipolar electrode. This ED-EC combined cell makes it possible to conduct the simultaneous removal of microbiological content and elimination of turbidity from urban wastewater. The results show that current densities greater than or equal to 6.70 A m(-2) enable complete disinfection of the effluent and the removal of more than 90% of its initial turbidity. Hypochlorite and chloramines formed during the ED-EC process were found to be the main compounds responsible for the disinfection process. Furthermore, a cell configuration of cathode (inlet)-anode (outlet) improves the process performance by enhancing turbidity removal. Finally, the influence of the bipolar electrode material (iron or aluminium) was assessed. The results indicate that the efficiency of the electrodisinfection process depends mainly on the anodic material and is not influenced by the material of the bipolar electrode. In contrast, the removal of turbidity is more efficient when using iron as a bipolar electrode, especially at low current densities, due to the formation of a passive layer on the aluminium that hinders the dissolution of the bipolar electrode., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
