Superscattering, corresponding to the scattering cross section of a scatterer being significantly larger than its single-channel limit, has attracted increasing attention due to its huge potential for practical applications. The realization of superscattering relies on the overlapping of multiple resonance modes in a scatterer. Accordingly, superscattering phenomena have been observed primarily in alternating plasmonic/dielectric layered structures which support surface plasmons. However, such systems suffer from high Ohmic loss due to the excitation of surface plasmons, hindering broader application of the plasmonic/dielectric hybrid systems. On the other hand, subwavelength structures based on high permittivity dielectric materials (such as ferroelectric ceramics) offer expansive opportunities to realize electric and magnetic resonances at microwave and THz frequencies. Here, based on optimization methods involving mode analysis, we numerically demonstrate superscattering from individual multilayered dielectric cylinders. The maximum scattering cross section achieved is determined by the collective contributions from several resonance modes excited in a complex cylinder. Our results reveal that a combination of mode analysis and a custom optimization method can enable efficient designs of complex dielectric structures exhibiting exotic scattering responses.

Chiral meta-mirrors provide a unique opportunity for achieving handedness-selective strong light-matter interaction at the nanometer scale. Importantly, the chiral resonances observed in chiral meta-mirrors arise from the spin-dependent resonant cavity which, however, is generally narrowband. In this paper, by exploiting a genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization method, we numerically validate a chiral meta-mirror with octave bandwidth. In particular, in the wavelength range from 1000 to 2000 nm, the proposed chiral meta-mirror strongly absorbs circularly polarized light of one handedness while highly reflecting the other. A field analysis indicates that the observed broadband chiroptical response can be attributed to the multiple chiral resonances supported by the optimized meta-mirror across the band of interest. The observed broadband chiral response confirms the potential of advanced inverse-design approaches for the creation of chiral metadevices with sophisticated functionalities. Based on the Lorentz reciprocity theorem, we show that the proposed meta-mirror can enable chiral-selective broadband second harmonic generation (SHG). Our study indicates that the application of advanced inverse-design approaches can greatly facilitate the development of metadevices with strong chiral response in both the linear and nonlinear regimes.

Reconfigurable electromagnetic devices, specifically reconfigurable antennas, have shown to be integral to the future of communication systems. However, mechanically robust designs that can survive real-world, harsh environment applications and high-power conditions remain rare to this day. In this paper, the general framework for a field of both discrete and continuously mechanically reconfigurable devices is established by combining compliant mechanisms with electromagnetics. To exemplify this new concept, a reconfigurable compliant mechanism antenna is demonstrated which exhibits continuously tunable performance across a broad band of frequencies. Moreover, three additional examples are also introduced that further showcase the versatility and advanced capabilities of compliant mechanism enabled electromagnetic devices. Unlike previous approaches, this is achieved with minimal part counts, additive manufacturing techniques, and high reliability, which mechanical compliant mechanism devices are known for. Various dispersion models can be expressed as special cases of the Generalized Dispersion Model (GDM), which is composed of a series of Padé polynomials. While important for its broad applicability, we found that some materials with Drude dispersive terms can be accurately modeled by mixing a 1 st order Padé polynomial with an extra conductivity term. This conductivity term can be separated from the auxiliary differential equation (ADE). Therefore, the proposed mixed-order model can achieve the same accuracy with fewer unknowns, thus realizing higher computational efficiency and lower memory consumption. For examples, we derive the model parameters and corresponding numerical errors for noble metals including Au, Ag, and Al in the optical regime. Finally, the proposed model's efficiency improvements are validated through implementation within a Discontinuous Galerkin Time Domain (DGTD) framework. The proposed model can achieve up to 12.5% efficiency improvement in theory compared to the conventional GDM with the same accuracy. A numerical example validates that, in practice, 9% memory reduction and 11% acceleration can be realized.

Optimizing the shape of metasurface unit cells can lead to tremendous performance gains in several critically important areas. This paper presents a method of generating and optimizing freeform shapes to improve efficiency and achieve multiple metasurface functionalities (e.g., different polarization responses). The designs are generated using a three-dimensional surface contour method, which can produce an extensive range of nearly arbitrary shapes using only a few variables. Unlike gradient-based topology optimization, the proposed method is compatible with existing global optimization techniques that have been shown to significantly outperform local optimization algorithms, especially in complex and multimodal design spaces.

An efficient discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method with a generalized dispersive material (GDM) model and periodic boundary conditions (PBCs), hereto referred to as DGTD-GDM-PBCs, is proposed to analyze the electromagnetic scattering from dispersive periodic nanostructures. The GDM model is utilized to achieve a robust and accurate universal model for arbitrary dispersive materials. Using a transformed field variable technique, PBCs are introduced to efficiently truncate the computational domain in the periodic directions for both normally and obliquely incident illumination cases. Based on the transformed Maxwell's equations with PBCs, the formulation of the DGTD method with a GDM model is derived. Furthermore, a Runge-Kutta time-stepping scheme is proposed to update the semi-discrete transformed Maxwell's equations and auxiliary differential equations (ADEs) with high order accuracy. Numerical examples for periodic nanostructures with dispersive elements, such as reflection and transmission of a thin film, surface plasmon at the interfaces of a metallic hole array structure, and absorption properties of a dual-band infrared absorber are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and capability of the proposed method.

The discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method and its recent flavor, the continuous-discontinuous Galerkin time domain (CDGTD) method, have been extensively applied to simulations in the radio frequency (RF) and microwave (MW) regimes due to their inherent ability to efficiently model multiscale problems. We propose to extend the CDGTD method to nanophotonics while exploiting its advantages which have already been established in the RF and MW regimes, such as domain decomposition, non-conformal meshing, high-order elements, and hp-refinement. However, at optical frequencies many materials are highly dispersive, so the modeling of nanophotonic devices requires accurate handling of different dielectric functions, including those of plasmonic elements, dielectrics, and tunable materials. In this paper, we propose a CDGTD method that incorporates a generalized dispersive material (GDM) model which is an efficient way to implement a wide range of optical dispersion models with a universal analytic function. Physics-based dispersion models, such as the Drude, Debye, Lorentz, and critical points as well as more complicated behavior founded on ab-initio principles can all be obtained as special cases of the universal GDM approach. The accuracy and convergence of this GDM-incorporated CDGTD are verified by numerical examples. The CDGTD method, equipped with the GDM model, paves the way to the efficient design and optimization of large scale photonic devices with a diverse range of optical dispersive materials.

Complex electromagnetic structures can be designed by exploiting the concept of spatial coordinate transformations. In this paper, we define a coordinate transformation scheme that enables one to taper the electric field between two waveguides of different cross-sections. The electromagnetic field launched from the wide input waveguide is compressed in the proposed field tapering device and guided into the narrow output waveguide. In closed rectangular waveguide configurations, the taper can further play the role of a mode selector due to the output waveguide's cut-off frequency. Realizable permittivity and permeability values that can be achieved with common existing metamaterials are determined from the transformation equations and simplified by a proposed parameter reduction method. Both a 2D continuous design model and a potential 3D discretized realization model are presented at microwave frequencies and the performances of the tapering devices are verified by full-wave finite element numerical simulations. Finally, near-field distributions are shown to demonstrate the field tapering functionality.

Transformation optics (TO) has brought forth a renewed interest in gradient-index (GRIN) optics due to its ability to allow arbitrary geometries to electromagnetically mimic the behaviors of more conventional structures via a spatially-inhomogeneous refractive index profile. While quasi-conformal transformation optics (qTO) has seen great success at microwave and RF frequencies, it is inherently limited to single frequency transformations: an immediate shortcoming for designs in the optical regime. Also, achieving desirable solutions from multi-element transformations is difficult for qTO. To overcome these challenges, a multi-component multi-frequency lens transformation procedure based on the wavefront-matching (WFM) design methodology is presented. Finally, the procedure is applied to a number of optical systems to advocate its efficacy as a more general transformation method.

Current analytical expressions between Gradient-Index (GRIN) lens parameters and optical aberrations are limited to paraxial approximations, which are not suitable for realizing GRIN lenses with wide fields of view or small f-numbers. Here, an analytical surrogate model of an arbitrary GRIN lens ray-trace evaluation is formulated using multivariate polynomial regressions to correlate input GRIN lens parameters with output Zernike coefficients, without the need for approximations. The time needed to compute the resulting surrogate model is over one order-of-magnitude faster than traditional ray trace simulations with very little losses in accuracy, which can enable previously infeasible design studies to be completed.

This paper proposes a new design paradigm which allows for a modular approach to replacing a homogeneous optical lens system with a higher-performance GRadient-INdex (GRIN) lens system using a WaveFront Matching (WFM) method. In multi-lens GRIN systems, a full-system-optimization approach can be challenging due to the large number of design variables. The proposed WFM design paradigm enables optimization of each component independently by explicitly matching the WaveFront Error (WFE) of the original homogeneous component at the exit pupil, resulting in an efficient design procedure for complex multi-lens systems.

By analyzing the limitations that achromatic gradient-index (GRIN) lens solutions in the radial and axial extremes place on lens thickness and surface curvature, a radial-axial hybrid GRIN theory is developed in order to overcome these restrictions and expose a larger solution space. With the achromatic hybrid GRIN theory, the trade-offs between thickness, curvature, and GRIN type can be directly studied in the context of size, weight, and power (SWaP) reduction. Finally, the achromatic solution space of a silicon-germanium-based material system is explored, and several designs are verified with ray tracing.

Recent developments in transformation optics have led to burgeoning research on gradient index lenses for novel optical systems. Such lenses hold great potential for the advancement of complex optics for a wide range of applications. Despite the plethora of literature on gradient index lenses, previous works have not yet considered the application of anti-reflective coatings to these systems. Reducing system reflections is crucial to the development of this technology for highly sensitive optical applications. Here, we present effective anti-reflective-coating designs for gradient index lens systems. Conventional anti-reflective-design methodologies are leveraged in conjunction with transformation optics to develop coatings that significantly reduce reflections of a flat gradient index lens. Finally, the resulting gradient-index anti-reflective coatings are compared and contrasted with conventional homogeneous anti-reflective coatings.
