The mouth cavity is the second most complex microbial community in the human body. It is composed of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. An imbalance in the oral microbiota may lead to various conditions, including caries, soft tissue infections, periodontitis, root canal infections, peri-implantitis (PI), pulpitis, candidiasis, and denture stomatitis. Additionally, several locally administered antimicrobials have been suggested for dentistry in surgical and non-surgical applications. The main drawbacks are increased antimicrobial resistance, the risk of upsetting the natural microbiota, and hypersensitivity responses. Because of their unique physiochemical characteristics, nanoparticles (NPs) can circumvent antibiotic-resistance mechanisms and exert antimicrobial action via a variety of new bactericidal routes. Because of their anti-microbial properties, carbon-based NPs are becoming more and more effective antibacterial agents. Periodontitis, mouth infections, PI, dentin and root infections, and other dental diseases are among the conditions that may be treated using carbon NPs (CNPs) like graphene oxide and carbon dots. An outline of the scientific development of multifunctional CNPs concerning oral disorders will be given before talking about the significant influence of CNPs on dental health. Some of these illnesses include Periodontitis, oral infections, dental caries, dental pulp disorders, dentin and dental root infections, and PI. We also review the remaining research and application barriers for carbon-based NPs and possible future problems.

Aim: To investigate the effectiveness of unconventional post space disinfection techniques, specifically Er:YAG laser, Temoporfin, and Carbon Nanoparticles (CNPs), in improving Martens hardness (MH), eliminating the smear layer (SL), and enhancing the push-out bond strength (PBS) of glass fiber posts in canal dentin., Methods: An in vitro study was conducted utilizing 80 single-rooted extracted human teeth, which were decoronated and subjected to standardized root canal preparation. The teeth were equally distributed into four experimental groups: Group 1 (NaOCl + EDTA), Group 2 (Er: YAG laser + EDTA), Group 3 (Temoporfin + EDTA), and Group 4 (CNPs + EDTA). Each group underwent disinfection protocols followed by assessment of Martens hardness (MH) using nanoindentation testing, SL evaluation via scanning electron microscopy, and bond strength testing using a universal testing machine (UTM). Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test to determine the level of significance among the groups. A significant level of p<0.05 was established., Results: Group 4 (CNPs+17 % EDTA) showed a high MH value of (0.25 ± 0.02 GPa), significantly outperforming Groups 1 (0.13 ± 0.02 GPa) and 3 (0.10 ± 0.03 GPa). Group 2 (Er: YAG laser + 17 % EDTA) demonstrated superior smear layer removal across all sections, particularly in the apical third (1.94 ± 0.38). Push-out bond strength was highest in Group 2 (9.98 ± 0.14 MPa at the cervical level) and Group 4 (10.08 ± 0.21 MPa), while Group 1 showed a decrease in apical bond strength of (5.11 ± 0.19 MPa) CONCLUSION: CNPs and Er:YAG laser treatments, in comparison to Temoporfin and NaOCl, significantly increase dentin hardness and bond strength while reducing SL. This finding suggests that the incorporation of these innovative disinfection methods into endodontic procedures may enhance the durability and success of glass fiber post restorations., (Copyright © 2025. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), a prevalent enzyme involved in anaerobic glycolysis, is released into body fluids following cell damage and has long been a general marker of tissue injury. However, due to its lack of selectivity and the advent of more accurate biomarkers, the clinical utility of LDH has been largely limited to confirming hemolysis. LDH has been recognized as a valuable prognostic biomarker for various cancers, making its monitoring crucial during cancer management. Traditional LDH methods include spectrophotometric analysis of NADH at 340 nm, native electrophoresis, or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. This study presents the first lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for the smartphone-based quantification of serum LDH levels at the point of care. Highly-affinity and specific antibodies have been produced, with 5 nM equilibrium dissociation constant and no cross-reactivity with human serum albumin and human immunoglobulin G. Utilizing carbon nanoparticles as signal transducers significantly enhanced the quantification limit 55-fold, compared to the conventional gold nanoparticles-based LFIA, achieving a quantification limit of 1.5 ng mL -1 . The developed assay demonstrated a mean recovery rate of 115 ± 21 % when evaluating LDH-spiked serum samples. Multi-targets detection has obtained much attention because this sensing mode can realize the detection of multi-targets simultaneously, which is helpful for biomedical analysis. Carbon nanoparticles have attracted extensive attention due to their superior optical and chemical properties, but there are few reports about red emission carbon nanoparticles for simultaneous detection of multi-targets. In this paper, a red emission fluorescent carbon nanoparticles were prepared by 1, 2, 4-triaminobenzene dihydrochloride at room temperature. The as-prepared red emission fluorescent carbon nanoparticles exhibited strong emission peak located at 635 nm with an absolute quantum yield up to 24%. They showed excellent solubility, high photostability and good biocompatibility. Furthermore, it could sensitively and selectively response to hypochlorite and pH, thus simultaneous detection of hypochlorite and pH was achieved by combining the red emission fluorescent carbon nanoparticles with computational chemistry. Crop plants are severely affected by heavy metals (HMs), leading to food scarcity and economical loss. Lead (Pb) is outsourced by use of lead-based fertilizers, batteries, mining, smelting and metal processing. It significantly reduces growth, development and yield of crops cultivated on contaminated sites. In this study, the ameliorative role of carbon based fullerenol nanoparticles (FNPs) in combination with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) inoculation was examined in Brassica napus L. grown in Pb contaminated soil. A pot experiment in three-ways completely randomize fashion with three replicates was conducted. For Pb stress, a 200 µM PbCl 2 solution was applied at a rate of 1 L per pot. FNPs were applied via foliar spray at a concentration of 3 mM. For AMF inoculation rhizospheric soil was collected from Sorghum bicolor fields and used in this experiment. Results of the study showed that Pb toxicity greatly reduced growth (shoot length; 15%, root length; 25%) of B. napus plants. It lowered photosynthesis (38%) and gas exchange related attributes. Pb contamination caused oxidative stress, evident from elevated level of malondialdehyde (62%), and reactive oxygen species (H 2 O 2 ; 60%, OH - ; 103% and O 2 •- ; 23%). It also triggered the antioxidant defense system of B. napus. These plants also had high Pb metal ions in their root and shoot compared with control. Foliar application of FNPs along with AMF inoculation effectively mitigated oxidative stress caused by Pb via increasing antioxidant enzymes activities. Catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and polyphenol peroxidase activities were increased by 37, 19, 96, 200, 47, 117 and 47%, respectively. In conclusion, these treatments modulated photosynthetic machinery, antioxidant defense mechanism and nutrients uptake in B. napus plants to alleviate Pb stress. The focus of current research work was to develop and validate size-exclusion chromatography method and develop and evaluate gel formulation of deferoxamine conjugated with PEGylated carbon nanoparticles (DEF-PEG-CNP) for topical delivery. Size-exclusion chromatography-based method was validated as per ICH guidelines. Effect of Carbopol® 974P and Transcutol® on the nanoparticles' permeation was studied by 3-level full factorial design of experiment. Gel formulations were characterized for viscosity, cohesive and adhesive force by texture analyzer, and drug permeation through pig ear and human skin. The analytical method was specific as no interference from solvent or excipients were observed and met preset criteria of validation with limit of quantification of 0.24 ± 0.00 μg/mL. The nanoparticles permeation, steady state flux, and retained drug were statistically (p < 0.05) affected by Carbopol® 974P and Transcutol® percentage in the gel formulations. The permeation, steady state flux, and retained nanoparticles from the gel formulations varied from 23.2 ± 2.5 % to 70.9 ± 113.3 %, 0.8 ± 0.3 to 6.6 ± 2.1 μg/cm 2 .h, and 5.6 ± 0.3 to 38.8 ± 8.8 µg/g, respectively. Permeation of the nanoparticles was 1.9 folds higher in pig skin compared to human skin. Immunofluorescence detected successful permeation of DEF-PEG-CNP particles into skin. Paracetamol (PCM) is a commonly used analgesic and antipyretic agent for humans worldwide. However, PCM overdoses or overuse can cause health issues, such as hepatoxicity. As PCM is also used for the treatment of farm animals, it is essential to monitor these residues in animal-derived matrices at risk-based sites in order to minimize the intake of PCM through the food chain. In the present study, we have developed a novel carbon nanoparticle (CNP)-based indirect competitive lateral flow immunoassay (icLFIA) for the rapid detection of PCM in bovine urine. The developed icLFIA can detect PCM residues within 10 min, and its performance was validated according to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/808, i.e., determination of the detection capability (CCβ), specificity, robustness, and stability. The CCβ of the icLFIA for PCM in bovine urine is 5 mg/L and the icLFIA is proven to be selective and specific towards PCM in bovine urine, as no matrix interference and cross-reactivity were observed, except for high concentrations of orthocetamol. The icLFIA for PCM in bovine urine is robust to (small) variations in reading time, but it remains necessary to strictly use a dilution ratio of running buffer/bovine urine of 80/20. Moreover, the produced icLFIAs are stable for at least 56 days under the stored conditions. In conclusion, the developed and validated icLFIA provides a rapid and cost-effective method for on-site monitoring of PCM abuse in cattle., Competing Interests: Declarations. Introduction: Benign multinodular goiter (BMNG) can grow very large and cause compression symptoms, making the operation procedure difficult. However, the recurrence rate of BMNG ranges from 3% to 43%. Reoperative thyroid surgery for BMNG is uncommon and can result in a high rate of complications, including hypoparathyroidism and recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. Carbon nanoparticles (CNs) have been widely used as a protective agent for the parathyroid gland and as a tracer agent in central lymph node dissection. However, the protection effect of CNs in redoing BMNG has not been well illustrated. This study investigates whether CNs could protect parathyroid glands (PGs) during reoperation for patients with BMNG., Methods: BMNG patients who previously underwent thyroidectomy and received reoperation between January 2019 and January 2022 were retrospectively recruited. The Dunhill approach was employed for all patients. The patients were divided into two groups: the CNs group, who received injection CNs injection 1 hour before the operation (n = 24), and the control group, who underwent thyroid surgery without CNs injection (control group, n = 25). The numbers of PGs preserved in situ , autotransplantation, the accidental removal of the PGs, and the parathyroid hormone level were recorded and analyzed., Results: The results revealed that more PGs were preserved in situ in the CNs group compared to the control group (3.25±0.15 vs 2.60±0.16, P=.007). Moreover, fewer PGs were subjected to autotransplantation and were accidentally discovered in the specimen in the CNs group compared to the control group. Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy among females worldwide, and its high metastasis rates are the leading cause of death just after lung cancer. Currently, tamoxifen (TAM) is a hydrophobic anticancer agent and a selective estrogen modulator (SERM), approved by the FDA that has shown potential anticancer activity against BC, but the non-targeted delivery has serious side effects that limit its ubiquitous utility. Therefore, releasing anti-cancer drugs precisely to the tumor site can improve efficacy and reduce the side effects on the body. Nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most important strategies to solve the issue of overdose TAM toxicity, owing to the ability of nano-enabled formulations to deliver desirable quantity of TAM to cancer cells over a longer period of time. In view of this, use of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles in targeted drug delivery holds novel promise for improving the efficacy, safety, and specificity of TAM therapy. Here, we synthesized biocompatible carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) using chitosan molecules without any toxic surface passivating agent. Synthesized CNPs exhibit good water dispersibility and emit intense blue fluorescence upon excitation (360 nm source). The surface of the CNPs has been functionalized with folate using click chemistry to improve the targeted drug uptake by the malignant cell. The pH difference between cancer and normal cells was successfully exploited to trigger TAM release at the target site. After six hours of incubation, CNPs released ∼ 74 % of the TAM drug in acidic pH. An electroanalytical method based on disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with non-toxic carbonaceous nanodots is proposed as a reliable and effective device for codeine determination in biological fluids and soft drinks. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and carbon nanodots (CNDs) were evaluated as electrode modifiers for the determination of the drug. The electroactive areas of the modified electrodes were assessed by cyclic voltammetry using potassium ferricyanide. Results demonstrated that GQDs provided the best analytical response for codeine, displaying an intense and well-defined anodic wave approximately 0.9 V vs reference electrode. The method exhibits an acceptable linear dynamic range, low limits of detection and quantification (0.21 and 0.73 µM, respectively), and satisfactory precision (below 3.9% expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD)) in saliva. Only the analysis of biofluids requires a simple extraction protocol. The feasibility and applicability of this novel approach were assessed by determining codeine in different matrices, with recoveries ranging from 69 to 112%. This cost-effective, simple, easily miniaturised and portable method was applied not only to biofluids but also for the direct detection of codeine in soft drinks combined with a codeine-enriched syrup, a medication that is being used to adulterate beverages, particularly at specific events (drinking and nightclub parties). Recent advances in tumor immunotherapy have highlighted the pivotal role of carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon dots, graphene quantum dots, and carbon nanotubes. This review examines the unique benefits of these materials in cancer treatment, focusing on their mechanisms of action within immunotherapy. These include applications in immunoregulation, recognition, and enhancement. We explore how these nanomaterials when combined with specific biomolecules, can form immunosensors. These sensors are engineered for highly sensitive and specific detection of tumor markers, offering crucial support for early diagnosis and timely therapeutic interventions. This review also addresses significant challenges facing carbon nanomaterials in clinical settings, such as issues related to long-term biocompatibility and the hurdles of clinical translation. These challenges require extensive ongoing research and discussion. This study aimed to determine the potential toxicological effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), their modifications with ethylenediamine (ED) and boric acid (BA) on aquatic organisms. Specifically, the research focused on the morphological, physiological, and histopathological-immuno-histochemical responses in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos and larvae, via applying different concentrations of CNTs, CNT-ED, and CNT-ED-BA (Control, 5, 10, and 20 mg/L). The results indicated that 20 mg/L CNT nanoparticles were toxic to zebrafish larvae, with mortality rates increasing with CNT and CNT-ED concentrations, reaching 36.7 % at the highest CNT concentration. The highest dose caused considerable degeneration, necrosis, DNA damage, and apoptosis, as evidenced by histopathological and immunohistochemical tests. In contrast, despite their high concentration, CNT-ED-BA nanoparticles exhibited low toxicity. Behavioral studies revealed that CNT and CNT-ED nanoparticles had a more significant impact on sensory-motor functions compared to CNT-ED-BA nanoparticles. Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have been considered promising energy storage systems due to their excellent electrochemical performance, environmental toxicity, high safety and low cost. However, uncontrolled dendrite growth and side reactions at the zinc anode have seriously hindered the development of ZIBs. Herein, we prepared the carbon nanoparticles layer coated zinc anode with (103) crystal plane preferential oriented crystal structure (denoted as C@RZn) by a facile one-step vapor deposition method. The preferential crystallographic orientation of (103) crystal plane promotes zinc deposition at a slight angle, effectively preventing the formation of Zn dendrites on the surface. In addition, the hydrophobic layer of carbon layer used as an inert physical barrier to prevent corrosion reaction and a buffer during volume changes, thus improving the reversibility of the zinc anode. As a result. the C@RZn anode achieves a stable cycle performance of more than 3000 h at 1 mA cm -2 with CE of 99.77 % at 5 mA cm -2 . The full battery with C@RZn anode and Mn-doped V 6 O 13 (MVO) cathode show stability for 5000 cycles at the current density of 5 A g -1 . Phototherapy has demonstrated substantial development because in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window it has a larger tissue penetration and fewer adverse consequences. In this work, a particular kind of NIR-II responsive Fe-doped carbon nanoparticles (FDCNs) is synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method for combined photothermal and chemodynamic therapy. The mesoporous nanostructure of FDCN, which has a size distribution that exceeds 225 nm, allows for effective acidification. The iron ions released from these nanoparticles can catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into hydroxyl radical (•OH) for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). In addition to their CDT utility, FDCN can effectively adsorb and transform 1064 nm light into local heat, achieving a photothermal conversion efficacy (PCE) of 36.3%. This dual functionality not only allows for the direct eradication of cancer cells through photothermal therapy (PTT) but also enhances the chemodynamic reaction, creating a synergistic effect that amplifies the therapeutic outcome. The FDCN has demonstrated remarkable anticancer activity in both cellular and animal tests without incurring major systemic toxicity. This suggests that the compound has great promise for use in clinical cancer therapy.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were successfully synthesized from carbohydrate-rich residue of birch obtained following the lignin-first strategy. The optical and physicochemical properties of the CQDs were studied, along with their potential for photocatalytic pollutant degradation. By combining solvothermal and chemical oxidation methods, the product yield of CQDs from carbohydrate-rich residue reached 8.1 wt%. Doping nitrogen enhances the graphitization of CQDs and introduces abundant amino groups to the surface, thereby boosted the quantum yield significantly from 8.9 % to 18.7 %-19.3 %. Nitrogen-doped CQDs exhibited efficient photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, reaching 37 % within 60 min, with a kinetic degradation rate of 0.00725 min -1 . The development of an ideal membrane for membrane distillation (MD) is of the utmost importance. Enhancing the efficiency of MD by adding nanoparticles to or onto a membrane's surface has drawn considerable attention from the scientific community. It is crucial to thoroughly examine state-of-the-art nanomaterials-enabled MD membranes with desirable properties, as they greatly enhance the efficiency and reliability of the MD process. This, in turn, opens up opportunities for achieving a sustainable water-energy-environment nexus. By introducing carbon-based nanomaterials into the membrane's structure, the membrane gains excellent separation abilities, resistance to various feed waters, and a longer lifespan. Additionally, the use of carbon-based nanomaterials in MD has led to improved membrane performance characteristics such as increased permeability and a reduced fouling propensity. These nanomaterials have also enabled novel membrane capabilities like in situ foulant degradation and localized heat generation. Therefore, this review offers an overview of how the utilization of different carbon-based nanomaterials in membrane synthesis impacts the membrane characteristics, particularly the liquid entry pressure (LEP), hydrophobicity, porosity, and membrane permeability, as well as reduced fouling, thereby advancing the MD technology for water treatment processes. Furthermore, this review also discusses the development, challenges, and research opportunities that arise from these findings.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and PEDOT-functionalized carbon nanoparticles (f-CNPs) were synthesized by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization and pyrolysis methods. f-CNP-PEDOT nanocomposites were prepared by varying the concentration of PEDOT from 1 to 20% by weight (i.e., 1, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 wt%). Several characterization techniques, such as field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analyses, as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were applied to investigate the morphology, the crystalline structure, the N 2 adsorption/desorption capability, as well as the electrochemical properties of these new synthesized nanocomposite materials. FESEM analysis showed that these nanocomposites have defined porous structures, and BET surface area analysis showed that the standalone f-CNP exhibited the largest surface area of 801.6 m 2 /g, whereas the f-CNP-PEDOT with 20 wt% exhibited the smallest surface area of 116 m 2 /g. The BJH method showed that the nanocomposites were predominantly mesoporous. CV, GCD, and EIS measurements showed that f-CNP functionalized with 5 wt% PEDOT had a higher capacitive performance compared to the individual f-CNPs and PEDOT constituents, exhibiting an extraordinary specific capacitance of 258.7 F/g, at a current density of 0.25 A/g, due to the combined advantage of enhanced electrochemical activity induced by PEDOT doping, and highly developed porosity of f-CNPs. Symmetric aqueous supercapacitor devices were fabricated using the optimized f-CNP-PEDOT doped with 5 wt% of PEDOT as active material, exhibiting a high capacitance of 96.7 F/g at 1.4 V, holding practically their full charge, after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles at 2 A/g, thus providing the highest electrical electrodes performance. Hereafter, this work paves the way for the potential use of f-CNP-PEDOT nanocomposites in the development of high-energy-density supercapacitors.

The application of nanomaterials in different plants exerts varying effects, both positive and negative. This study aimed to investigate the influence of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) on the growth and development of Ficus tikoua Bur. plant. The morphological characteristics, photosynthetic parameters, and chlorophyll content of F. tikoua Bur. plants were evaluated under four different concentrations of CNPs. Results indicated a decreasing trend in several agronomic traits, such as leaf area, branching number, and green leaf number and most photosynthetic parameters with increasing CNPs concentration. Total chlorophyll and chlorophyll b contents were also significantly reduced in CNPs-exposed plants compared to the control. Notably, variations in plant tolerance to CNPs were observed based on morphological and physiological parameters. Altering the route of uptake by the cells is an attractive strategy to overcome drug-receptor adaptation problems. Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) with emission beyond tissue autofluorescence for imaging biological tissues were used to study the phenomenon of uptake by the cells. In this regard, red-emitting carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) were synthesized and incorporated onto lipid microbubbles (MBs). The CNPs showed red emissions in the range of 640 nm upon excitation with 480 nm wavelength of light. Atomic force microscopic and confocal microscopic images showed the successful loading of CNPs onto the MB. Carbon nanoparticle loaded microbubbles (CNP-MBs) were treated with NIH 3 T3 cells at different concentrations. Confocal microscopic imaging studies confirm the presence of CNPs inside the treated cells. Cytotoxicity studies revealed that the CNPs showed minimal toxicity towards cells after loading onto MBs. The CNPs are usually taken up by the cells through the clathrin-mediated (CME) pathway, but when loaded onto MBs, the mechanism of uptake of CNPs is altered, and the uptake by the cells was observed even in the presence of inhibitors for the CME pathway. Loading CNPs onto MBs resulted in the uptake of CNPs by the cell through micropinocytosis and sonophoresis in the presence of ultrasound. The in vivo uptake CNP-MBs were performed in Danio rerio (Zebrafish larvae). Background: The long-term effect of intraoperative usage of carbon nanoparticles (CN) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) test strip using immune colloidal gold technique (ICGT) is unclear. This study aims to compare the effect of intraoperative usage of CN and ICGT test strips on PG function., Methods: This randomized clinical study involved adult patients who underwent total thyroidectomy. They were randomly allocated into three groups (control, CN, and ICGT group). Clinical data were analyzed., Results: Each group involved 98 patients. Serum calcium and PTH concentrations at 24 h postoperatively (PTH 24h ) were higher in CN group. The parathyroid function recovered quicker in CN group. Use of CN increased in situ PG preservation and PTH 24h . Mediation analysis indicated that 23.05% of the total effect of CN on PTH 24h was attributed to PGRIS., Conclusion: CN holds promise to improve in situ PG preservation and protect PG vasculature, thereby reducing the incidence of early hypoparathyroidism. Nanoscale materials are being developed from individual particles to multi-component assemblies, with carbon nanomaterials being particularly useful in bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronics due to their unique optical properties, enhanced by surface passivation and chemical doping. Noble metals are commonly used in conjunction with carbon-based nanomaterials for the synthesis of nanohybrids. Carbon-based materials can function as photosensitizers and effective carriers in photodynamic therapy, enabling the use of combined treatment approaches. The hydrophobicity and agglomeration tendency of carbon nanoparticles pose a drawback. This study is an attempt to overcome these limitations, which involved the synthesis of iron oxide-doped carbon nanoparticles through the carbonisation of citric acid and hexamethylene tetramine, followed by doping them with iron oxide. The as synthesized iron oxide-doped carbon nanoparticles were stabilised with fluorescently modified hyperbranched polyglycerol. The efficacy of these nanoparticles in photodynamic antibacterial therapy and Cd (II) ion sensing was investigated. The selectivity of stabilised nanoparticles against Cd 2+ ion is presented in the current study. The current study also compares the antibacterial efficacy of undoped, iron oxide-doped and stabilised nanoparticle systems. The enhancement of carbon-supported components is a crucial factor in augmenting the interplay between carbon-supported and metal-active components in the utilization of catalysts for direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Here, we propose a strategy for designing a catalyst by modifying candle soot (CS) and loading nickel onto ordered carbon soot. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the Ni nanoparticles content on the electrocatalytic performance of Ni-CS, ultimately leading to the identification of a maximum composition. The presence of an excessive quantity of nickel particles leads to a decrease in the number of active sites within the material, resulting in sluggishness of the electron transfer pathway. The electrocatalyst composed of nickel and carbon support, with a nickel content of 20 wt%, has demonstrated a noteworthy current activity of 18.43 mA/cm 2 , which is three times that of the electrocatalyst with a higher nickel content of 25 wt%. For example, the 20 wt% Ni-CS electrocatalytic activity was found to be good, and it was approximately four times higher than that of 20 wt% Ni-CB (nickel-carbon black). Moreover, the chronoamperometry (CA) test demonstrated a reduction in current activity of merely 65.80% for a 20 wt% Ni-CS electrocatalyst, indicating electrochemical stability. In addition, this demonstrates the great potential of candle soot with Ni nanoparticles to be used as a catalyst in practical applications.

The fundamentals, performance, and applications of piezoresistive strain sensors based on polymer nanocomposites are summarized herein. The addition of conductive nanoparticles to a flexible polymer matrix has emerged as a possible alternative to conventional strain gauges, which have limitations in detecting small strain levels and adapting to different surfaces. The evaluation of the properties or performance parameters of strain sensors such as the elongation at break, sensitivity, linearity, hysteresis, transient response, stability, and durability are explained in this review. Moreover, these nanocomposites can be exposed to different environmental conditions throughout their lifetime, including different temperature, humidity or acidity/alkalinity levels, that can affect performance parameters. The development of flexible piezoresistive sensors based on nanocomposites has emerged in recent years for applications related to the biomedical field, smart robotics, and structural health monitoring. However, there are still challenges to overcome in designing high-performance flexible sensors for practical implementation. At present, due to its wide application and relatively low cost, chemotherapy remains a clinically important cancer treatment option; however, a number of chemotherapeutic drugs have important limitations, such as lack of specificity, high toxicity and side effects, and multi-drug resistance. The emergence of nanocarriers has removed numerous clinical application limitations of certain antitumor chemotherapy drugs and has been widely used in the treatment of tumors with nanodrugs. The present study used carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) as a nanocarrier for doxorubicin (DOX) to form the novel nanomedicine delivery system (CNPs@DOX)was demonstrated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectrophotometry, ζ potential and TEM characterization experiments. The results confirmed the successful preparation of CNPs@DOX nanoparticles with a particle size of 96±17 nm, a wide range of absorption and a negatively charged surface. Furthermore, CNPs@DOX produced more reactive oxygen species and induced apoptosis, and thus exhibited higher cytotoxicity than DOX, which is a small molecule anticancer drug without a nanocarrier delivery system.. Recently, increasing attention of researchers in the field of membrane technology has been paid to the development of membranes based on biopolymers. One of the well-proven polymers for the development of porous membranes is cellulose acetate (CA). This paper is devoted to the study of the influence of different parameters on ultrafiltration CA membrane formation and their transport properties, such as the variation in coagulation bath temperature, membrane shrinkage (post-treatment at 80 °C), introduction to casting CA solution of polymers (polyethylene glycol (PEG), polysulfone (PS), and Pluronic F127 (PL)) and carbon nanoparticles (SWCNTs, MWCNTs, GO, and C 60 ). The structural and physicochemical properties of developed membranes were studied by scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The transport properties of developed CA-based membranes were evaluated in ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin (BSA), dextran 110 and PVP K-90. All developed membranes rejected 90% compounds with a molecular weight from ~270,000 g/mol. It was shown that the combination of modifications (addition of PEG, PS, PL, PS-PL, and 0.5 wt% C 60 ) led to an increase in the fluxes and BSA rejection coefficients with slight decrease in the flux recovery ratio. These changes were due to an increased macrovoid number, formation of a more open porous structure and/or thinner top selective, and decreased surface roughness and hydrophobization during C 60 modification of blend membranes. Optimal transport properties were found for CA-PEG+C 60 (the highest water-394 L/(m 2 h) and BSA-212 L/(m 2 h) fluxes) and CA-PS+C 60 (maximal rejection coefficient of BSA-59%) membranes.

Advancement in additive manufacturing (AM) allows the production of nanocomposites with complex and custom geometries not typically allowable with conventional manufacturing techniques. The benefits of AM have led to recent interest in producing multifunctional materials capable of being printed with current AM technologies. In this article, piezoresistive composites realized by AM and the matrices and fillers utilized to make such devices are introduced and discussed. Excessive carbon emissions, especially CO 2 release, have been a global concern. Few studies applied nanotechnology to relieve the ecotoxicity of CO 2 . Here, we applied carbon dots (CDs) to neutralize the CO 2 . We found CO 2 induced the aggregation of CDs, which is of significance for CDs in enhanced fluorescence intensity but decreased CDs function in nanozyme activity, and reduced CDs toxicity to bacteria and cancer cells. Our data suggest the concern of CO 2 release in global health in CDs mediated anticancer drug delivery and antibiotics resistance. However, enhanced fluorescence in cells which can be applied for bioimaging or CO 2 sensing as simulated investigation by static charged attraction of positively charged CDs with negatively charged soluble HCO 3 - . Thus, CO 2 abrogates the nanomedicine efficacy in cancer cells and antibacterial and may induce drug resistance for patients undergoing chemotherapy or antibiotics therapy. Accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) poses significant dangers to the environment and human health. The advancement of technology for cleaning up PAH-contaminated environments is receiving more attention. Adsorption is the preferred and most favorable approach for cleaning up sediments polluted with PAH. Due to their affordability and environmental friendliness, carbonaceous adsorbents (CAs) have been regarded as promising for adsorbing PAH. However, adsorbent qualities, environmental features, and factors may all significantly impact how well CAs remove PAH. According to growing data, CAs, most of which come from laboratory tests, may be utilized to decontaminate PAH in aquatic setups. However, their full potential has not yet been established, especially concerning field applications. This review aims to concisely summarize recent developments in CA, PAH stabilization processes, and essential field application-controlling variables. Background: Many agents have been used for the detection of sentinel lymph nodes in endometrial cancer. Carbon dye, which has a strong staining ability and high contrast due to its dark black color, identifies the lymph nodes efficiently. Our aim was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of carbon dye for the detection of sentinel lymph nodes in endometrial cancer., Methods: We conducted a single-center, prospective, cohort study in 89 patients with early-stage endometrial cancer between September 2021 and August 2022. The procedure was performed under laparoscopy., Results: The sensitivity and negative predictive value of the sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) with carbon dye injection were 83.3% and 98.8%, respectively. Mapping identified at least one sentinel lymph node in 84 patients (94.4%) on one pelvic side and at least one sentinel lymph node in 73 patients (82.0%) on each pelvic side out of 89 patients. In addition, no carbon dye-associated allergic reaction was detected., Conclusion: Carbon dye is a non-allergenic, inexpensive, and effective agent for SLNB with a satisfying sensitivity and a negative predictive value. In addition, both unilateral and bilateral detection rates were sufficient. Wettability, typically estimated through the contact angle, is a fundamental property of surfaces with wide-ranging implications in both daily life and industrial processes. Recent scientific interest has been paid to the surfaces exhibiting extreme wettability: superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces, characterized by high water repellency and exceptional water wetting, respectively. Both chemical composition and morphology play a role in the determination of the wettability "performance" of a surface. To tune surface-wetting properties, we considered coatings of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) in this study. They are a new class of nanomaterials synthesized in flames whose chemistry, dimension, and shape depend on combustion conditions. For the first time, we systematically studied the wettability of CNP coatings produced in a controlled rich ethylene/air flame stabilized over a McKenna burner. A selected substrate was intermittently inserted in the flame at 15 mm above the burner to form a thin coating thanks to a thermophoretic-driven deposition mechanism. The chemical-physical quality and the deposed quantity of the CNPs were varied by opportunely combing the substrate flame insertion number (from 1 to 256) and the carbon-to-oxygen ratio, C/O (from 0.67 to 0.87). The wettability of the coatings was evaluated by measuring the contact angle, CA, with the sessile drop method. When the C/O = 0.67, the CNPs were nearly spherical, smaller than 8 nm, and always generated hydrophilic coatings (CA < 35°). At higher C/O ratios, the CNPs reached dimensions of 100 nm, and fractal shape aggregates were formed. In this case, either hydrophilic (CA < 76°) or superhydrophobic (CA ~166°) behavior was observed, depending on the number of carbon nanoparticles deposed, i.e., film thickness. It is known that wettability is susceptible to liquid surface tension, and therefore, tests were conducted with different fluids to establish a correlation between the flame conditions and the nanostructure of the film. This method offers a fast and simple approach to determining mesoscale information for coating roughness and topographical homogeneity/inhomogeneity of their surfaces.

Background: There has been a substantial increase in incidence of thyroid cancer globally over the past three decades, emphasizing the necessity for efficient surgical management. Surgical intervention requires meticulous lymphatic dissection; however, it is challenging to both accurately identify lymph nodes and preserve the surrounding structures. We investigated the role of carbon nanoparticles in endoscopic thyroid cancer surgery to improve surgical effects and reduce postoperative complications., Methods: Chinese and English literature databases from inception to May 2023 were searched based on inclusion criteria, and data were extracted independently by two investigators. STATA software was used for data analysis., Results: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted with 13 publications (9 randomized and 4 non-randomized controlled trials). The results demonstrated that the application of carbon nanoparticles in thyroid surgery led to an increase in the number of retrieved lymph nodes and identification of metastatic lymph nodes. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of carbon nanoparticles - guided lymph node dissection during thyroidectomy in patients with papillary thyroid cancer(PTC)., Methods: Clinical trials consisted of two subgroups: unilateral lobectomy (UL; n=283) and total thyroidectomy (TT; n=286). From each subgroup, the patients were randomly assigned to two groups: the carbon nanoparticle group and control group. Primary endpoints included parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, number of lymph nodes (LNs) detected, number of tiny lymph nodes detected, and recognition and retention of the parathyroid glands. Secondary endpoint was recognition and protection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve., Results: A total of 569 patients with PTC were recruited. There were no statistically significant differences in demographics between the carbon nanoparticles and control groups (P > 0.05). In the UL subgroup, there were no significant differences in PTH levels between the two groups at preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative day one, and postoperative month one (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the serum Ca 2+ levels between the two groups preoperatively and at postoperative month one (P>0.05). The number of lymph nodes dissected in the carbon nanoparticles group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.0001). The detection rate of tiny lymph nodes in the carbon nanoparticles group was higher than that in the control group (P=0.0268). In the TT subgroup, there was no significant difference in PTH levels between the two groups at preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative day one (P>0.05). However, the mean PTH level in the carbon nanoparticles group was significantly higher than that of the control group at postoperative month one (P=0.0368). There was no significant difference in the serum Ca 2+ levels between the two groups preoperatively and at postoperative month one (P>0.05). There were no significant differences between the two groups in the number of dissected LNs (P>0.05) or the detection rate of tiny lymph nodes (P>0.05). No drug-related AE and complications due to the injection of carbon nanoparticles were recorded in this study. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of parathyroid preserved in situ and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury in the UL and TT subgroups., Conclusions: Carbon nanoparticles demonstrated efficacy and safety in thyroidectomy. Docking methods can be used to predict the orientations of two or more molecules with respect of each other using a plethora of various algorithms, which can be based on the physics of interactions or can use information from databases and templates. The usability of these approaches depends on the type and size of the molecules, whose relative orientation will be estimated. The two most important limitations are (i) the computational cost of the prediction and (ii) the availability of the structural information for similar complexes. In general, if there is enough information about similar systems, knowledge-based and template-based methods can significantly reduce the computational cost while providing high accuracy of the prediction. However, if the information about the system topology and interactions between its partners is scarce, physics-based methods are more reliable or even the only choice. In this chapter, knowledge-, template-, and physics-based methods will be compared and briefly discussed providing examples of their usability with a special emphasis on physics-based protein-protein, protein-peptide, and protein-fullerene docking in the UNRES coarse-grained model., (© 2024. Objective: This study explored prophylactic central compartment lymph node dissection (pCCLND) for patients with cN0 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and the effect of carbon nanoparticles (CNP) on surgical outcomes., Methods: This retrospective study reviewed PTC cases treated at our tertiary medical institution between January 2019 and December 2022. Only patients with indications for total thyroidectomy and cN0 disease were included. CNP has been associated with a higher number of harvested lymph nodes and a lower rate of accidental parathyroid gland (PTG) removal. Patients who used CNP in this study were classified as group 1, while those who denied its use were classified as group 2., Results: In total, 116 cases were included, with 80 patients in group 1 and 36 in group 2. Most patients were in stage T1, with 68 (85.0 %) patients in group 1 and 31 (86.1 %) in group 2. Postoperative hoarseness occurred in 3 (3.8 %) patients in group 1 and 1 (2.8 %) in group 2, which recovered within two months. In group 2, 250 nodes were harvested, 72 (28.8 %) of which were metastatic; in group 1, 889 nodes were harvested, 316 (35.5 %) of which were metastatic; the difference regarding the rates of metastatic lymph nodes between the 2 groups was statistically significant (P = 0.047). Differences in postoperative blood calcium and parathyroid hormone levels between the two groups were statistically significant (P = 0.035 and P = 0.034, respectively). There were symptoms of hypocalcemia in 6 (16.7 %) patients in group 2 but in only 2 (2.5 %) in group 1, all of which recovered within three months; the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.017)., Conclusion: pCCLND is worth undertaking for cN0 PTC. Carboxyl nanodiamond (cND) nanoparticles are actively internalized by B16F10 melanoma cells in culture. Treatment of B16F10 tumor cells with cNDs in vitro inhibited their ability to (i) migrate and invade through porous membranes in a transwell culture system, (ii) secrete matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) MMP-2 and MMP-9, and (iii) express selected epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers critical for cell migration and invasion. Administration of luciferase-transfected B16F10-Luc2 melanoma cells resulted in a rapid growth of the tumor and its metastasis to different organs that could be monitored by in vivo bioluminescence imaging as well as by ex vivo BLI of the mouse organs. After tumor cells were administered intravenously in C57Bl/6 mice, administration of cNDs (50 μg i.v. every alternate day) resulted in marked suppression of the tumor growth and metastasis in different organs of mice. Subcutaneous administration of B16F10 cells resulted in robust growth of the primary tumor subcutaneously as well as its metastasis to the lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys. Intravenous treatment with cNDs did not affect the growth of the primary tumor mass but essentially blocked the metastasis of the tumor to different organs. Histological examination of mouse organs indicated that the administration of cNDs by itself was safe and did not cause toxic changes in mouse organs. These results indicate that the cND treatment may have an antimetastatic effect on the spread of B16F10 melanoma tumor cells in mice. Though nanomaterials based on carbon have been widely used for the preparation of high-performance polymeric nanocomposites, there are few works focused on the effect of carbon nanoparticle morphology on the performance of corresponding polymer nanocomposites. Therefore, four representative carbon nanoparticles, including fullerene, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and carbon black incorporated poly(styrene- b -isoprene- b -styrene) (SIS) elastomer nanocomposites were fabricated using the solvent casting method. In addition, the effect of carbon nanoparticle morphology on the rheological, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of the obtained polymeric nanocomposites was systematically investigated. The results showed that the shape of carbon nanoparticles has a different effect on the properties of the obtained elastomer nanocomposites, which lays the foundation of carbon nanoparticle screening for high-performance polymer nanocomposite construction.

Carbon dots (CDs) are a recent addition to the nanocarbon family, encompassing both crystalline and amorphous phases. They have sparked significant research interest due to their unique electrical and optical properties, remarkable biocompatibility, outstanding mechanical characteristics, customizable surface chemistry, and negligible cytotoxicity. Their current applications are mainly limited to flexible photonic and biomedical devices, but they have also garnered attention for their potential use in intelligent packaging. The conversion of food waste into CDs further contributes to the concept of the circular economy. It provides a comprehensive overview of emerging green technologies, energy-saving reactions, and cost-effective starting materials involved in the synthesis of CDs. It also highlights the unique properties of biomass-derived CDs, focusing on their structural performance, cellular toxicity, and functional characteristics. The application of CDs in the food industry, including food packaging, is summarized in a concise manner. This paper sheds light on the current challenges and prospects of utilizing CDs in the packaging industry. Background: Lymph node ratio has garnered increasing attention as a prognostic marker for rectal cancer; however, few studies have investigated the relationship between lymph node ratio and rectal cancer recurrence. Additionally, Carbon Nanoparticle tracking is a safe and effective strategy for locating tumors and tracking lymph nodes. However, no studies have reported the relationship between Carbon Nanoparticles and rectal cancer recurrence., Methods: Patients with stage III rectal cancer who underwent radical resection between January 2016 and 2020 were analyzed. The primary outcome was tumor recurrence. 269 patients with stage III rectal cancer were included in this study. The effects of lymph node ratio, Carbon Nanoparticles, and other clinicopathological factors on rectal cancer recurrence were assessed using univariate, multivariate analyses and the t-test., Results: Univariate analysis determined tumor recurrence using cytokeratin 19 fragment, CA-199, CEA, N-stage, positive lymph nodes, total lymph nodes, and lymph node ratio(positive/total); with the lymph node ratio being the most relevant. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis determined lymph node ratio =0.38 as the optimal cutoff value. The analysis of lymph node ratio ≥0.38 and <0.38 showed statistical differences in three indicators: tumor recurrence, CEA, and use of Carbon Nanoparticles., Conclusion: Lymph node ratio is a strong predictor of stage III rectal cancer recurrence and may be considered for inclusion in future tumor-node-metastasis staging and stage III rectal cancer stratification. Herein, small-sized fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNs) with tunable shapes ranging from spheres to various rods with aspect ratios (ARs) of 1.00, 1.51, 1.89, and 2.85 are prepared using a simple anion-directed strategy for the first time. Based on comprehensive morphological and structural characteristics of CNs, along with theoretical calculations of density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations, their shape-control mechanism is attributed to interionic interactions-induced self-assembly, followed by carbonization. The endoplasmic reticulum-targeting accuracy of CNs is gradually enhanced as their shape changes from spherical to higher-AR rods, accompanied by a Pearson's correlation coefficient up to 0.90. This work presents a facile approach to control the shape of CNs and reveals the relationship between the shape and organelle-targeting abilities of CNs, thereby providing a novel idea to synthesize CNs that serve as precise organelle-targeted fluorescent probes., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Colorectal malignancies are the third-most common malignancies worldwide, with a rising incidence. Surgery remains the treatment of choice and adequate lymph node dissection is required for accurate staging. The objective of this study is to assess the use of carbon nanoparticles in lymph node tracing and resection in cases of colorectal cancer. For that purpose, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies included in Medline, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. In the end, ten studies with a total number of 1418 patients were included in the final statistical analysis. The meta-analysis carried out showed that the use of carbon nanoparticles results in an increased number of lymph nodes harvested (WMD 6.15, 95% CI 4.14 to 8.16, p < 0.001) and a higher rate of cases with more than 12 lymph nodes harvested (OR 9.57, 95% CI 2.87 to 31.96, p = 0.0002). As a consequence, we suggest that carbon nanoparticles are used on a wider scale and that future research focuses on assessing the association between their use and overall patient survival. This study is limited by the fact that all included studies originate from China and by the fact that certain oncologic parameters and long-term outcomes have not been taken into account in the analysis.

Background: Lymph node (LN) metastasis is the most common metastasis route in gastric cancer. Extensive dissection of LNs can significantly improve the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer. Recently, multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that either indocyanine green (ICG) or carbon nanoparticles (CNs) can assist to promote the dissection of LNs during laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. Considering the pros and cons of the two tracers, this study proposed a novel method of dual tracer (ICG combined with CNs) for lymphatic tracing in laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery., Methods: This trial is a prospective, randomized controlled trial (RCT) with an estimation of 516 participants that randomize into 4 groups (1:1:1:1), namely control group, ICG group, CNs group, and dual tracer group. The primary outcome is the number of dissected LNs. The secondary outcomes include positive rate, false positive rate, negative rate, false negative rate, number of metastatic LNs, relationship between LN metastasis and tracer stained, operation duration, blood loss, incision length, morbidity and mortality rate, 3-year DFS (disease free survival), PFS (progression-free survival), and OS (overall survival)., Discussion: This study will investigate the efficacy and safety of a novel strategy using dual tracers for laparoscopic gastrectomy. There is a growing demand for the synthesis of high surface area carbons, also known as carbon nanoparticles (CNPs). Existing synthesis methods for high surface area carbons have limited environmental benignity and economic viability due to the requirement of multistep and batch processes and harsh activating and/or templating chemicals. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of high surface area CNPs from lignin, a waste byproduct, through a single-step, continuous gas phase aerosol technique without the use of activating or templating chemicals. This continuous approach requires significantly less time for synthesis: on the order of seconds in comparison to hours for conventional methods. Properties of carbon materials synthesized from lignin are controlled by temperature and residence time, and the role of these parameters inside the aerosol reactor on carbon nanoparticle size, morphology, molecular structure, and surface area is systematically investigated. Furthermore, the as-obtained carbon nanoparticles are tested for specific capacitance, and the best-performing material (surface area 925 m 2 /g) exhibited a specific capacitance of 247 F/g at 0.5 A/g with excellent capacity retainment of over 98% after 10,000 cycles. This is a clear demonstration of their superior performance compared with supercapacitors synthesized earlier from lignin. Overall, the simple (single-step, continuous, and rapid) operation and the avoidance of the use of activating/templating chemicals make the aerosol technique a promising candidate for the scalable and sustainable synthesis of CNPs from lignin.

Background and Objectives: To compare the feasibility and diagnostic value of sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping with carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and indocyanine green (ICG) in endometrial cancer (EC)., Methods: This was a single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial. Between August 1, 2020 and April 30, 2022, patients with early-stage EC were assessed for enrollment. All patients underwent SLN mapping with ICG or CNPs ± pelvic and/or para-aortic lymphadenectomy. The detection rate (DR), its impact factors, the sensitivity and the negative predictive value (NPV) of SLN mapping were analyzed., Results: In total, 206 patients, with 103 per group, were included. The overall and bilateral DRs of the two groups were comparable without significant differences. There was no difference regarding the distribution of mapped SLNs. The sensitivity was 66.7% for both groups, and the NPVs were not significantly different. Furthermore, the sensitivity and NPV reached 100% when calculated either per hemipelvis or only in patients with bilateral SLN detection., Conclusions: SLN mapping by CNPs in EC is feasible with high DRs and diagnostic accuracy compared with ICG. A significant bottleneck of current agricultural systems remains the very low agronomic efficiency of conventional agrochemicals, particularly in sandy soils. Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have been proposed to address this inefficiency in sandy soils, which could potentially improve soil fertility and enhance crop growth and physiological processes. However, the effects of different rates of CNMs on crop physiological and soil biochemical quality in sandy soils must be compared to other carbon sources (e.g., biochar) before CNMs can be broadly used. To address this, a 70-day pot experiment was set up, growing lettuce under ten treatments: a negative control with no CNMs, biochar or fertilizer; a fertilizer-only control; three CNMs-only unfertilized treatments (CNMs at 200, 400 and 800 mg kg -1 soil); two biochar treatments with fertilizer (biochar at 0.5% and 1% by soil mass + fertilizer); and three CNMs treatments with fertilizer (CNMs at 200, 400 and 800 mg kg -1 soil + fertilizer). A novel amorphous, water-dispersible, and carboxyl-functionalized CNMs with pH of 5.5, zeta potential of -40.6 mV and primary particle diameter of 30-60 nm was used for this experiment. Compared to the fertilizer-only control, CNMs applied at low to medium levels (200-400 mg kg -1 ) significantly increased lettuce shoot biomass (20-21%), total chlorophyll (23-27%), and fluorescence and photosynthetic activities (4-10%), which was associated with greater soil nutrient availability (N: 24-58%, K: 68-111%) and higher leaf tissue accumulation (N: 25-27%; K: 66%). Low to medium levels of CNMs also significantly increased soil biochemical properties, such as higher soil microbial biomass carbon (27-29%) and urease enzyme activity (34-44%) relative to fertilizer-only applications. In contrast, biochar (0.5%) increased lettuce biomass relative to fertilizer-only but had no significant effect on soil fertility and biological properties. Objective: To evaluate the value of refined extracapsular anatomy combined with carbon nanoparticle suspension tracing technology for protecting parathyroid function and the thoroughness of lymph node dissection in the central region during endoscopic thyroid cancer surgery., Patients and Methods: Retrospective clinical data analysis was performed on 108 patients who underwent endoscopic thyroid cancer surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College (Yijishan Hospital) from November 2019 to November 2022. Before surgery, thyroid function tests, color Doppler ultrasounds and neck-enhanced CT scans were performed on all patients. Cytopathological diagnosis obtained via ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration served as confirmation for the primary diagnosis. It was determined whether to perform a total thyroidectomy or a hemithyroidectomy (HT) together with preventive unilateral (ipsilateral) central neck dissection. Follow-up times were 1 to 34 months., Results: Transient neuromuscular symptoms were present in 3.70% (4/108) cases, with no permanent neuromuscular symptoms or permanent hypoparathyroidism. Regarding transient hypoparathyroidism, the patients recovered after three months and did not need long-term calcium supplementation. The number of harvested LNs (mean± SD) was 5.54 ± 3.84, with ≤5 in 57.41% (62/108) and >5 in 42.59% (46/108) cases. The number of patients with metastatic LNs was 37.96% (41/108), with ≤2 in 65.85% (27/41) and >2 in 34.15% (14/41) cases., Conclusions: Fine extracapsular anatomy combined with carbon nanoparticle suspension tracing is effective in endoscopic thyroid cancer surgery. Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the bond integrity and disinfection efficacy of Methylene blue(MB) alone, MB-PDT (Photodynamic therapy), MB@ carbon nanoparticles (CP)-PDT, and Cr, Cr: YSGG (ECL) against lactobacilli in Caries-affected dentin (CAD) MATERIAL AND METHODS: Methods consisted of Shear bond strength (SBS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), methods of disinfection, and failure analysis. CAD samples were prepared and biofilm formed on the specimens randomly allocated into five groups based on disinfection. Group 1: CHX; Group 2: MB; Group 3: MB-PDT: group 4: MB@CP-PDT and group 5: ECL. After disinfection Colony forming units were measured and specimens were restored and positioned under a universal testing machine (UTM). Failure analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope. The difference in survival rate was assessed using the Kruskal-Walis test. Mean and standard deviation for bond values after different methods of disinfection was evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc Tukey. The significance level was p<0.05 RESULTS: Morphological analysis revealed that CPs under SEM are flat discs with edged irregular shapes. EDX analyses show a spike indicating carbon particles by more than 95%. MB@CP-PDT displayed the highest reduction in lactobacillus levels in comparison to the other disinfection methods. The highest SBS was exhibited by the CAD sample disinfected with ECL. The lowest SBS values in CAD specimens after cavity cleansing with MB alone. The predominant failure type in CAD disinfected with MB alone, ECL CHX, MB-PDT, and MB@CP-PDT was adhesive., Conclusion: The use of MB@CP-PDT showed high antibacterial potency against lactobacillus but demonstrated bond values similar to CHX. Background: To investigate the efficacy and safety of lymph nodes (LNs) dissection guided by carbon nanoparticles (CNs) in gastric cancer (GC) surgery., Materials and Methods: We searched electronic databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus for relevant articles up to September 2022 and collected all studies comparing the CNs group with blank controls group on the efficacy and safety of LN dissection in gastrectomy. A pooled analysis of the collected data was performed, including the number of retrieved LNs, the staining rate of LNs, the number of metastatic LNs dissection, various intraoperative outcomes, and postoperative complications., Results: A total of 9 studies including 1770 participants (502 in the CNs group and 1268 in the control group) were included. As compared to the blank control group, the CNs group detected 10.46 more LNs in each patient (WMD = 10.46, 95% CI: 6.63 ~ 14.28, p < 0.00001, I 2  = 91%), and also significantly more metastatic LNs (WMD = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.43 ~ 3.83, p < 0.0001, I 2  = 41%). However, there was no significant difference in the rate of metastatic LNs between the CNs and control groups (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 0.94 ~ 2.00, P = 0.1, I 2  = 89%). In addition, there was no increase in operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative complications associated with CNs-guided gastrectomy., Conclusion: CNs-guided gastrectomy is safe and effective, and can increase the efficiency of LN dissection without increasing the risk of surgery., (© 2023. Purpose: To evaluate whether the application of carbon nanoparticles (CNs) in total or near-total thyroidectomy combined with central lymph node dissection (CLND) for thyroid cancer (TC) is beneficial to lymph node dissection, parathyroid, and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) protection., Methods: Relevant literatures were systematically searched on PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library Databases until March 31, 2021. All analyses were performed using Revman Manager 5.3 software. The main results were the number of central lymph nodes, the number of central metastatic lymph nodes, accidental parathyroidectomy, postoperative hypoparathyroidism, postoperative hypocalcemia, and postoperative transient RLN paralysis., Results: This meta-analysis identified 4 randomized controlled trials and 8 non-randomized controlled trials comprising 1870 patients. Compared with the control, the use of CNs was helpful to dissect more central lymph nodes (weighted mean difference [WMD]: 3.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.12-4.98, P < .00001) and central metastatic lymph nodes (WMD: 1.69, 95% CI:1.31-2.08, P < .00001), lower rate of accidental parathyroidectomy (odds ratio [OR]: .33, 95% CI: .23-.47, P < .00001), lower rate of both postoperative transient hypoparathyroidism (OR: .40, 95% CI: .31-.51, P < .00001), and transient hypocalcemia (OR: .37, 95% CI: .27-.51, P < .00001). However, there were no statistical difference between the groups for postoperative permanent hypoparathyroidism (OR: .29, 95% CI: .06-1.28, P = .10), postoperative permanent hypocalcemia (OR: .94, 95% CI: .10-9.16, P = .96), and postoperative transient RLN paralysis (OR: .66, 95% CI: .40-1.12, P = .12)., Conclusions: The application of CNs in total or near-total thyroidectomy combined with CLND for TC can better dissect the central lymph nodes and protect parathyroid glands (PGs) and their function.

The demand for healthy foods with high functional value has progressively increased. Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) have a promising application in agriculture including the enhancement of plant growth. However, there are few studies on the interactive effects of CNPs and mild salinity on radish seed sprouting. To this end, the effect of radish seed priming with 80mM CNPs on biomass, anthocyanin, proline and polyamine metabolism, and antioxidant defense system under mild salinity growth condition (25 mM NaCl). The results indicated that seed nanopriming with CNPs along with mild salinity stress enhanced radish seed sprouting and its antioxidant capacity. Priming boosted the antioxidant capacity by increasing antioxidant metabolites such as (polyphenols, flavonoids, polyamines, anthocyanin, and proline). To understand the bases of these increases, precursors and key biosynthetic enzymes of anthocyanin [phenylalanine, cinnamic acid, coumaric acid, naringenin, phenylalanine ammonia lyase, chalcone synthase (CHS), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H) and 4-coumarate: CoA ligase (4CL)], proline [pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthase (P5CS), proline dehydrogenase (PRODH), Sucrose, Sucrose P synthase, invertase) and polyamines [putrescine, spermine, spermidine, total polyamines, arginine decarboxylase, orinthnine decarboxylase, S-adenosyl-L-methionine decarboxylase, spermidine synthase, spermine synthase] were analyzed. Herein we describe the facile synthesis of new N-doped carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) obtained from 1,10-phenanthroline by the solvothermal method. Characterization of CNPs were carried out with transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), UV-vis absorption spectra, and luminescence spectra. CNPs were pH sensitive and exploited as fluorescent chemosensors and imaging agents for Al(III) and Zn(II) ions in real-life samples. Remarkably, we show that CNPs can be used for the detection of Al(III) and Zn(II) ions in water samples. Accordingly, the results indicate that CNPs are highly effective in detecting Zn(II) content of cosmetic creams. We also demonstrated that the CNPs could be used for in vitro imaging of Al(III) and Zn(II) in Human Larynx Squamous Cell Carcinoma (Hep-2). Finally, Al(III) imaging in Angelica Officinalis root tissue was also achieved successfully.
