Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of materials that offer great promise in various applications. However, the synthesis remains challenging: for example, a range of crystal structures can often be accessed from the same building blocks, which complicates the phase selectivity. Likewise, the high sensitivity to slight changes in synthesis conditions may cause reproducibility issues. This is crucial, as it hampers the research and commercialization of affected MOFs. Here, it presents the first-ever interlaboratory study of the synthetic reproducibility of two Zr-porphyrin MOFs, PCN-222 and PCN-224, to investigate the scope of this problem. For PCN-222, only one sample out of ten was phase pure and of the correct symmetry, while for PCN-224, three are phase pure, although none of these show the spatial linker order characteristic of PCN-224. Instead, these samples resemble dPCN-224 (disordered PCN-224), which has recently been reported. The variability in thermal behavior, defect content, and surface area of the synthesised samples are also studied. The results have important ramifications for field of metal-organic frameworks and their crystallization, by highlighting the synthetic challenges associated with a multi-variable synthesis space and flat energy landscapes characteristic of MOFs., (© 2024 The Authors. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) constructed from naphthalene-diimide bearing tectons undergo photochromic changes whilst forming radical bearing species within the framework structure.

Mn(diimine)(CO) 3 X (X = halide) complexes are critical components of chromophores, photo- and electrocatalysts, and photoactive CO-releasing molecules (photoCORMs). While these entities have been incorporated into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a detailed understanding of the photochemical and chemical processes that occur in a permanently porous support is lacking. Here we site-isolate and study the photochemistry of a Mn(diimine)(CO) 3 Br moiety anchored within a permanently porous MOF support, allowing for not only the photo-liberation of CO from the metal but also its escape from the MOF crystals. In addition, the high crystallinity and structural flexibility of the MOF allows crystallographic snapshots of the photolysis products to be obtained. We report these photo-crystallographic studies in the presence of coordinating solvents, THF and acetonitrile, showing the changing coordination environment of the Mn species as CO loss proceeds. Using time resolved experiments, we report complementary spectroscopic studies of the photolysis chemistry and characterize the final photolysis product as a possible Mn(ii) entity. Donor-acceptor dyads and triads comprising core-substituted naphthalene diimide (NDI) chromophores and either phenothiazine or phenoxazine donors are described. Synthesis combined with electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical investigations facilitates characterisation of the various redox states of these molecules, confirming the ability to combine arrays of electron donating and accepting moieties into single species that retain the redox properties of these individual moieties.

We are currently witnessing the dawn of hydrogen (H 2 ) economy, where H 2 will soon become a primary fuel for heating, transportation, and long-distance and long-term energy storage. Among diverse possibilities, H 2 can be stored as a pressurized gas, a cryogenic liquid, or a solid fuel via adsorption onto porous materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as adsorbent materials with the highest theoretical H 2 storage densities on both a volumetric and gravimetric basis. However, a critical bottleneck for the use of H 2 as a transportation fuel has been the lack of densification methods capable of shaping MOFs into practical formulations while maintaining their adsorptive performance. Here, we report a high-throughput screening and deep analysis of a database of MOFs to find optimal materials, followed by the synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation of an optimal monolithic MOF ( mono MOF) for H 2 storage. After densification, this mono MOF stores 46 g L -1 H 2 at 50 bar and 77 K and delivers 41 and 42 g L -1 H 2 at operating pressures of 25 and 50 bar, respectively, when deployed in a combined temperature-pressure (25-50 bar/77 K → 5 bar/160 K) swing gas delivery system. This performance represents up to an 80% reduction in the operating pressure requirements for delivering H 2 gas when compared with benchmark materials and an 83% reduction compared to compressed H 2 gas. Our findings represent a substantial step forward in the application of high-density materials for volumetric H 2 storage applications.

Porosity and surface area analysis play a prominent role in modern materials science. At the heart of this sits the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory, which has been a remarkably successful contribution to the field of materials science. The BET method was developed in the 1930s for open surfaces but is now the most widely used metric for the estimation of surface areas of micro- and mesoporous materials. Despite its widespread use, the calculation of BET surface areas causes a spread in reported areas, resulting in reproducibility problems in both academia and industry. To prove this, for this analysis, 18 already-measured raw adsorption isotherms were provided to sixty-one labs, who were asked to calculate the corresponding BET areas. This round-robin exercise resulted in a wide range of values. Here, the reproducibility of BET area determination from identical isotherms is demonstrated to be a largely ignored issue, raising critical concerns over the reliability of reported BET areas. To solve this major issue, a new computational approach to accurately and systematically determine the BET area of nanoporous materials is developed. A thermally induced order-disorder transition of tetraphenylporphyrin (2 H -TPP) on Au(111) is characterised by scanning probe microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy-based techniques. We observed that a transition from an ordered close-packed phase to a disordered diffuse phase is correlated with an on-surface cyclodehydrogenation reaction, and that additional heating of this diffuse phase gives rise to a single distinct nitrogen environment indicative of the formation of a Au-TPP species.

The field of mechanically interlocked molecules that employ a handcuff component are reviewed. The variety of rotaxane and catenane structures that use the handcuff motif to interlock different components are discussed and a new nomenclature, distilling diverse terminologies to a single approach, is proposed. The ability to control photoinduced charge transfer within molecules represents a major challenge requiring precise control of the relative positioning and orientation of donor and acceptor groups. Here we show that such photoinduced charge transfer processes within homo- and hetero-rotaxanes can be controlled through organisation of the components of the mechanically interlocked molecules, introducing alternative pathways for electron donation. Specifically, studies of two rotaxanes are described: a homo[3]rotaxane, built from a perylenediimide diimidazolium rod that threads two pillar[5]arene macrocycles, and a hetero[4]rotaxane in which an additional bis(1,5-naphtho)-38-crown-10 (BN38C10) macrocycle encircles the central perylenediimide. The two rotaxanes are characterised by a combination of techniques including electron diffraction crystallography in the case of the hetero[4]rotaxane. Cyclic voltammetry, spectroelectrochemistry, and EPR spectroscopy are employed to establish the behaviour of the redox states of both rotaxanes and these data are used to inform photophysical studies using time-resolved infra-red (TRIR) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopies. The latter studies illustrate the formation of a symmetry-breaking charge-separated state in the case of the homo[3]rotaxane in which charge transfer between the pillar[5]arene and perylenediimide is observed involving only one of the two macrocyclic components. Developments in the confinement of phosphines within micro- or nano-environments are explored. Phosphines are ubiquitous across metal coordination chemistry and underpin some of the most famous homogeneous transition metal catalysts. Constraining phosphines within confined environments influences not only their behaviour but also that of their metal complexes. Notable examples include the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or metal-organic cages (MOCs) to support phosphines which demonstrate how the microenvironment within such constructs leads to reactivity modification. The development of phosphine confinement is explored and parallels are drawn with related constrained macrocyclic systems and mechanically interlocked molecules. The review concludes by identifying areas that remain a challenge and those that will provide new avenues for research.

A small percentage of an impurity was shown, via scanning tunneling microscopy, to drastically change the on-surface self-assembly behavior of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid, by initiating the nucleation and growth of a different polymorph. Molecular modelling simulations were used to shed further light onto the dopant-controlled assembly behaviour.

The on-surface synthesis of covalently bonded materials differs from solution-phase synthesis in several respects. The transition from a three-dimensional reaction volume to quasi-two-dimensional confinement, as is the case for on-surface synthesis, has the potential to facilitate alternative reaction pathways to those available in solution. Ullmann-type reactions, where the surface plays a role in the coupling of aryl-halide functionalised species, has been shown to facilitate extended one- and two-dimensional structures. Here we employ a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray standing wave (XSW) analysis to perform a chemical and structural characterisation of the Ullmann-type coupling of two iodine functionalised species on a Ag(111) surface held under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. Our results allow characterisation of molecular conformations and adsorption geometries within an on-surface reaction and provide insight into the incorporation of metal adatoms within the intermediate structures of the reaction., (© 2020. Designing porous materials which can selectively adsorb CO 2 or CH 4 is an important environmental and industrial goal which requires an understanding of the host-guest interactions involved at the atomic scale. Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) showing permanent porosity upon desolvation are rarely observed. We report a family of MOPs (Cu-1a , Cu-1b , Cu-2 ), which derive their permanent porosity from cavities between packed cages rather than from within the polyhedra. Thus, for Cu-1a , the void fraction outside the cages totals 56% with only 2% within. The relative stabilities of these MOP structures are rationalized by considering their weak nondirectional packing interactions using Hirshfeld surface analyses. The exceptional stability of Cu-1a enables a detailed structural investigation into the adsorption of CO 2 and CH 4 using in situ X-ray and neutron diffraction, coupled with DFT calculations. The primary binding sites for adsorbed CO 2 and CH 4 in Cu-1a are found to be the open metal sites and pockets defined by the faces of phenyl rings. More importantly, the structural analysis of a hydrated sample of Cu-1a reveals a strong hydrogen bond between the adsorbed CO 2 molecule and the Cu(II)-bound water molecule, shedding light on previous empirical and theoretical observations that partial hydration of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials containing open metal sites increases their uptake of CO 2 . The results of the crystallographic study on MOP-gas binding have been rationalized using DFT calculations, yielding individual binding energies for the various pore environments of Cu-1a .

The fields of metal-organic cages (MOCs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are both highly topical and continue to develop at a rapid pace. Despite clear synergies between the two fields, overlap is rarely observed. This article discusses the peculiarities and similarities of MOCs and MOFs in terms of synthetic strategies and approaches to system characterisation. The stability of both classes of material is compared, particularly in relation to their applications in guest storage and catalysis. In the last decade it has become possible to resolve the geometric structure of organic molecules with intramolecular resolution using high resolution scanning probe microscopy (SPM), and specifically using the subset of SPM known as noncontact atomic force microscopy (ncAFM). In world leading groups it has become routine not only to perform sub-molecular imaging of the chemical, electronic, and electrostatic properties of single molecules, but also to use this technique to track complex on-surface chemical reactions, investigate novel reaction products, and even synthesise new molecular structures one bond at a time. These developments represent the cutting edge of characterisation at the single chemical bond level, and have revolutionised our understanding of surface-based chemical processes.

1,4-dimethoxypillar[5]arene undergoes reversible multielectron oxidations forming stable radical cations, a property retained when incorporated in [2]rotaxanes, suggesting that pillar[5]arenes can be employed as viable, yet unreported, electron donors.

Structural insight into reactive species can be achieved via strategies such as matrix isolation in frozen glasses, whereby species are kinetically trapped, or by confinement within the cavities of host molecules. More recently, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been used as molecular scaffolds to isolate reactive metal-based species within their ordered pore networks. These studies have uncovered new reactivity, allowed observation of novel metal-based complexes and clusters, and elucidated the nature of metal-centred reactions responsible for catalysis. This perspective considers strategies by which metal species can be introduced into MOFs and highlights some of the advantages and limitations of each approach. Furthermore, the growing body of work whereby reactive species can be isolated and structurally characterised within a MOF matrix will be reviewed, including discussion of salient examples and the provision of useful guidelines for the design of new systems. A strategy to create organic molecules with high degrees of radical spin multiplicity is reported in which molecular design is correlated with the behaviour of radical anions in a series of BODIPY dyads. Upon reduction of each BODIPY moiety radical anions are formed which are shown to have different spin multiplicities by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and distinct profiles in their cyclic voltammograms and UV-visible spectra. The relationship between structure and multiplicity is demonstrated showing that the balance between singlet, biradical or triplet states in the dyads depends on relative orientation and connectivity of the BODIPY groups. The strategy is applied to the synthesis of a BODIPY triad which adopts an unusual quartet state upon reduction to its radical trianion.

A scheme for the generation of bimetallic nanoparticles is presented which combines electrodeposition of one type of metal, coordinated to a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), with another metal deposited from the bulk electrolyte. In this way PdCu nanoparticles are generated by initial complexation of Pd 2+ to a SAM of 3-(4-(pyridine-4-yl)phenyl)propane-1-thiol (PyP3) on Au/mica and subsequent reduction in an acidic aqueous CuSO 4 electrolyte. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the onset of Cu deposition is triggered by Pd reduction. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) shows that layers of connected particles are formed with an average thickness of less than 3 nm and lateral dimensions of particles in the range of 2 to 5 nm. In X-ray photoelectron spectra a range of binding energies for the Pd 3d signal is observed whereas the Cu 2p signal appears at a single binding energy, even though chemically different Cu species are present: normal and more noble Cu. Up to three components are seen in the N 1s signal, one originating from protonated pyridine moieties, the others reflecting the SAM-metal interaction. It is suggested that the coordination controlled electrodeposition yields layers of particles composed of a Pd core and a Cu shell with a transition region of a PdCu alloy. Deposited on top of the PyP3 SAM, the PdCu particles exhibit weak adhesion which is exploited for patterning by selective removal of particles employing scanning probe techniques. The potential for patterning down to the sub-10 nm scale is demonstrated. Harnessing the deposition contrast between native and PdCu loaded PyP3 SAMs, structures thus created can be developed into patterned continuous layers.

A strategy for positioning, and loosely connecting, molecules in close proximity using mechanically interlocked handcuffs is described. The strategy is demonstrated using rylene diimides, creating dimeric structures in which two components are linked through pillar[5]arene/imidazolium rotaxanes. Investigation of the resulting molecules demonstrates intriguing and new properties that arise from placing these redox active dye molecules together, allowing interactions, whilst allowing the molecules to separate as required. In particular we observe excimer emission from a perylene diimide dimer handcuff and the formation of an unusual radical anion π-dimer upon double reduction of the same molecule. The latter exhibits a unique visible absorption profile for a PDI-based molecule. We demonstrate the flexibility of our approach by making an unprecedented mixed perylene diimide/naphthalene diimide dimer which also reveals interactions between the two components. Our synthetic strategy facilitates the creation of unusual dimeric structures and allows the investigation of intermolecular interactions and the effects they have on electronic and magnetic properties.

Metal coordination to a series of bis (imidazolium)…pillar[5]arene [2]rotaxanes through the formation of metal-carbene bonds facilitates a new strategy to restrict the shuttling motion in [2]rotaxanes. Whereas the pillar[5]arene macrocycle rapidly shuttles along the full length of the bis (imidazolium) rod for the parent [2]rotaxane, Ag(i) coordination to the imidazolium groups through the formation of N-heterocyclic carbenes leads to restricted motion, effectively confining the shuttling motion of the [2]rotaxane. The Ag(i) coordinated [2]rotaxanes can be reacted further, either removing the Ag-carbene species to recreate the parent [2]rotaxane, or reaction with more bulky Pd(ii) species to further restrict the shuttling motion through steric inhibition.

Perylene diimides (PDIs) are promising candidates for n-type semiconductor materials and, thus, for use in organic electronics. Thionation of the imide moiety provides an efficient strategy to control the donor-acceptor gap of these types of compounds, although the degree and selectivity of thionation can be hard to achieve. Through the design of a sterically encumbered PDI-phenothiazine dyad, a previously unattained geminal thionation pattern has been realized, providing the first example of a perylene-monoimide-monothioimide. The electrochemical and solid-state structural properties of this uniquely thionated dyad are reported and compared to those of the nonthionated parent molecule. It is found that thionation enhances the electron affinity of the PDI core, affecting electrochemical and spectroelectochemcial behavior of the dyad without significantly affecting the solid-state packing of the molecules., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

The role of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions upon the nuclearity of palladium tiara-like complexes is reported herein. The synthesis of three palladium tiaras is described with three related thiolate ligands that vary in their hydrogen-bonding capability, amide vs ester for N -acetylcysteamine (tiara 1 ) vs 2-mercaptoethyl acetate (tiara 2 ) or ethyl thioglycolate (tiara 3 ), and in the relative position of the ester group, 2-mercaptoethyl acetate ( 2 ) or ethyl thioglycolate ( 3 ). Mass spectrometry indicates that, in the absence of protic solvents, N -acetylcysteamine reacts to form exclusively a six-membered tiara, [Pd(SCH 2 CH 2 NHCOCH 3 ) 2 ] 6 , 1 , whereas the ester containing analogues form both six- and eight-membered tiaras. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies indicate the significance of intramolecular N-H···O hydrogen bonds in determining the nuclearity of the amide-containing tiara 1 . NMR studies indicate that 1 is not in equilibrium with larger tiaras in solution, and that the smaller size of the aggregate inhibits the fluxional behavior of the pendant thiolate ligands, typically observed for larger tiaras. Electrochemical investigations of 1 reveal reductive processes that exhibit an increase in current upon addition of acid, along with the formation of palladium nanoparticles., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Site-selective organic transformations are commonly required in the synthesis of complex molecules. By employing a bespoke metal-organic framework (MOF, 1·[Mn(CO) 3 N 3 ]), in which coordinated azide anions are precisely positioned within 1D channels, we present a strategy for the site-selective transformation of dialkynes into alkyne-functionalized triazoles. As an illustration of this approach, 1,7-octadiyne-3,6-dione stoichiometrically furnishes the mono-"click" product N-methyl-4-hex-5'-ynl-1',4'-dione-1,2,3-triazole with only trace bis-triazole side-product. Stepwise insights into conversions of the MOF reaction vessel were obtained by X-ray crystallography, demonstrating that the reactive sites are "isolated" from one another. Single-crystal to single-crystal transformations of the Mn(I)-metalated material 1·[Mn(CO) 3 (H 2 O)]Br to the corresponding azide species 1·[Mn(CO) 3 N 3 ] with sodium azide, followed by a series of [3+2] azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions, are reported. The final liberation of the "click" products from the porous material is achieved by N-alkylation with MeBr, which regenerates starting MOF 1·[Mn(CO) 3 (H 2 O)]Br and releases the organic products, as characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Once the dialkyne length exceeds the azide separation, site selectivity is lost, confirming the critical importance of isolated azide moieties for this strategy. We postulate that carefully designed MOFs can act as physical protecting groups to facilitate other site-selective and chemoselective transformations.

Varying the degree of thionation of a series of naphthalene diimide (NDI) and naphthalic imide (NI) phenothiazine dyad systems affords a systematic approach for tuning the system's donor-acceptor energy gap. Each dyad was compared to model NDI/NI systems and fully characterised through single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, cyclic voltammetry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), transient absorption spectroscopy (TA), time-resolved infra-red spectroscopy (TRIR) and DFT. The measurements reveal that thionation increases both electron affinity of the NDI/NI acceptor dyad component and accessibility of the singly or doubly reduced states. Furthermore, FTIR and TA measurements show that excited state behaviour is greatly affected by thionation of the NDI and induces a decrease in the lifetime of the excited states formed upon the creation of charge-separated states.

On-surface reactions based on metal-catalysed Ullmann coupling have been successfully employed to synthesise a wide variety of covalently coupled structures. Substrate chemistry and topology are both known to effect the progression of an on-surface reaction; offering routes to control efficiency and selectivity. The limited stability of the surface of black phosphorus (BP) under atmospheric conditions is a significant constraint on the exploitation of this layered material and its few layer analogue, phosphorene, as an optoelectronic material. Here we show that supramolecular networks stabilised by hydrogen bonding can be formed on BP, and that these monolayer-thick films can passivate the BP surface and inhibit oxidation under ambient conditions. The supramolecular layers are formed by solution deposition and we use atomic force microscopy to obtain images of the BP surface and hexagonal supramolecular networks of trimesic acid and melamine cyanurate (CA.M) under ambient conditions. The CA.M network is aligned with rows of phosphorus atoms and forms large domains which passivate the BP surface for more than a month, and also provides a stable supramolecular platform for the sequential deposition of 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene to form supramolecular heterostructures.

On-surface reactions based on Ullmann coupling are known to proceed on coinage-metal substrates (e.g. Au, Ag, Cu), with the chemistry of the surface strongly influencing the reaction progression. In addition, the topography of the surface may be expected to affect the local adsorption geometry of the reactants as well as the intermediate and final structures. Here, we investigate the effect of two different surface facets of silver, Ag(111) and Ag(110) on the formation of organometallic and covalent structures for Ullmann-type coupling reactions. Deposition of 4,4"-diiodo-m-terphenyl molecules onto either Ag(111) or Ag(110) surfaces leads to the scission of C-I bonds followed by the formation of organometallic zigzag structures, consisting of molecules connected by coordination bonds to Ag adatoms. The covalently coupled product is formed by annealing each surface, leading to the removal of Ag atoms and the formation of covalently bonded zigzag poly(m-phenylene) structures. Comparisons of the adsorption model of molecules on each surface before and after annealing reveal that on Ag(111), structures rearrange by rotation and elongation of bonds in order to become commensurate with the surface, whereas for the Ag(110) surface, the similarity in adsorption geometry of the intermediate and final states means that no rotation is required.

The self-assembly of supramolecular arrays at solid surfaces is discussed with an emphasis on the degree of complexity that can be generated in such structures. The preparation of multi-component arrays is reviewed illustrating the approaches to generating many-component networks and the challenges that are encountered. The complexity of quasicrystalline and fractal molecular structures is also demonstrated along with recent developments in the synthesis of complexity perpendicular to the solid substrate through the formation of bilayer structures. Overall the importance of characterisation by scanning probe microscopy is evident in determining the complexity of structures at the molecular level.

The application of supramolecular chemistry on solid surfaces represents an exciting field of research that continues to develop in new and unexpected directions. This review highlights recent advances in the field which range from the fundamental aspects of the thermodynamics of self-assembly through to the development of new materials with potential application as new materials. The unique aspects of working on solid surfaces are highlighted and advances in the assembly of many component systems and highly complex fractal-like and quasicrystalline systems discussed. The unique features of working in the surface-based environment and the utilisation of scanning probe microscopies as a primary characterisation tool are highlighted.

The structures and photochemical behaviour of two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are reported. Reaction of Re(2,2'-bipy-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid)(CO) 3 Cl or Mn(2,2'-bipy-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid)(CO) 3 Br with LiCl or LiBr, respectively, produces single crystals of {Li 2 (DMF) 2 [(2,2'-bipy-5,5'-dicarboxylate)Re(CO) 3 Cl]} n ( RELI: ) or {Li 2 (DMF) 2 [(2,2'-bipy-5,5'-dicarboxylate)Mn(CO) 3 Br]} n ( MNLI: ). The structures formed by the two MOFs comprise one-dimensional chains of carboxylate-bridged Li(I) cations that are cross-linked by units of Re(2,2'-bipy-5,5'-dicarboxylate)(CO) 3 Cl ( RELI: ) or Mn(2,2'-bipy-5,5'- dicarboxylate)(CO) 3 Br ( MNLI: ). The photophysical and photochemical behaviour of both RELI: and MNLI: are probed. The rhenium-containing MOF, RELI: , exhibits luminescence and the excited state behaviour, as established by time-resolved infrared measurements, is closer in behaviour to that of unsubstituted [Re(bipy)(CO) 3 Cl] rather than a related MOF where the Li(I) cations are replaced by Mn(II) cations. These observations are further supported by density functional theory calculations. Upon excitation MNLI: forms a dicarbonyl species which rapidly recombines with the dissociated CO, in a fashion consistent with the majority of the photoejected CO not escaping the MOF channels.This article is part of the themed issue 'Coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks: materials by design'., (© 2016 The Author(s).)

A family of Cu(II)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been synthesized using three pyridyl-isophthalate ligands, H 2 L 1 (4'-(pyridin-4-yl)biphenyl-3,5-dicarboxylic acid), H 2 L 2 (4''-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,1':4',1''-terphenyl-3,5-dicarboxylic acid) and H 2 L 3 (5-[4-(pyridin-4-yl)naphthalen-1-yl]benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid). Although in each case the pyridyl-isophthalate ligands adopt the same pseudo-octahedral [Cu 2 (O 2 CR) 4 N 2 ] paddlewheel coordination modes, the resulting frameworks are structurally diverse, particularly in the case of the complex of Cu(II) with H 2 L 3 , which leads to three distinct supramolecular isomers, each derived from Kagomé and square nets. In contrast to [Cu(L 2 )] and the isomers of [Cu(L 3 )], [Cu(L 1 )] exhibits permanent porosity. Thus, the gas adsorption properties of [Cu(L 1 )] were investigated with N 2 , CO 2 and H 2 , and the material exhibits an isosteric heat of adsorption competitive with leading MOF sorbents for CO 2 [Cu(L 1 )] displays high H 2 adsorption, with the density in the pores approaching that of liquid H 2 This article is part of the themed issue 'Coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks: materials by design'., (© 2016 The Author(s).)

Preparation of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) via microwave heating is becoming increasingly popular due to reduced reaction times and enhanced control of MOF particle size. However, there is little understanding about the detailed interaction of the electric field portion of the wave with reactants during the synthesis of MOFs. In order to overcome this lack of fundamental understanding, information about the dielectric properties of the reactants is required. In this work the dielectric constants (ε') and loss factors (ε'') of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H2BDC; also known as terephthalic acid) and a number of M(III) (M = metal) salts dissolved in deionized water were measured as a function of frequency, temperature and concentration and with varying anions and cations. Dielectric data confirm the aqueous M(III) salts to be strong microwave absorbers, particularly at 915 MHz. M(III) salts with mono-anionic ligands (for example chlorides and nitrates) exhibit higher losses than di-anionic salts (sulfates) demonstrating that the former are heated more effectively in an applied microwave field. Of the M(III) salts containing either singly- or doubly-charged anions, those containing Fe(III) have the highest loss indicating that they will heat more efficiently than other M(III) salts such as Cr(III) and Al(III). Interestingly, H2BDC exhibits little interaction with the electric field at microwave frequencies.

A synthetic strategy involving a combination of tetra-thionation and amine substitution in the bay region of a perylene diimide (PDI) leads to remarkable examples of neutral PDIs with intense absorption maxima in the near infrared. Generation of the corresponding monoanions red shifts the absorption profile to give short-wavelength infrared bands.

The fluorescence of a two-dimensional supramolecular network of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxylphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) adsorbed on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is red-shifted due to, primarily, adsorbate-substrate van der Waals interactions. TCPP is deposited from solution on hBN and forms faceted islands with typical dimensions of 100 nm and either square or hexagonal symmetry. The molecular arrangement is stabilized by in-plane hydrogen bonding as determined by a combination of molecular-resolution atomic force microscopy performed under ambient conditions and density functional theory; a similar structure is observed on MoS2 and graphite. The fluorescence spectra of submonolayers of TCPP on hBN are red-shifted by ∼30 nm due to the distortion of the molecule arising from van der Waals interactions, in agreement with time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Fluorescence intensity variations are observed due to coherent partial reflections at the hBN interface, implying that such hybrid structures have potential in photonic applications.

Open-framework materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers have been widely investigated for their gas adsorption and separation properties. However, recent studies have demonstrated that their highly crystalline structures can be used to periodically organize guest molecules and non-structural metal compounds either within their pore voids or by anchoring to their framework architecture. Accordingly, the open framework can act as a matrix for isolating and elucidating the structures of these moieties by X-ray diffraction. This concept has broad scope for development as an analytical tool where obtaining single crystals of a target molecule presents a significant challenge and it additionally offers potential for obtaining insights into chemically reactive species that can be stabilized within the pore network. However, the technique does have limitations and as yet a general experimental method has not been realized. Scanning probe-actuated single molecule manipulation has proven to be an exceptionally powerful tool for the systematic atomic-scale interrogation of molecular adsorbates. To date, however, the extent to which molecular conformation affects the force required to push or pull a single molecule has not been explored. Here we probe the mechanochemical response of two tetra(4-bromophenyl)porphyrin conformers using non-contact atomic force microscopy where we find a large difference between the lateral forces required for manipulation. Remarkably, despite sharing very similar adsorption characteristics, variations in the potential energy surface are capable of prohibiting probe-induced positioning of one conformer, while simultaneously permitting manipulation of the alternative conformational form. Our results are interpreted in the context of dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations which reveal significant differences in the diffusion barriers for each conformer. These results demonstrate that conformational variation significantly modifies the mechanical response of even simple porpyhrins, potentially affecting many other flexible molecules.

The adsorption of naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimide (NTCDI) on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 is investigated through a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that NTCDI adopts multiple planar adsorption geometries on the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 surface which can be imaged with intramolecular bond resolution using NC-AFM. DFT calculations reveal adsorption is dominated by covalent bond formation between the molecular oxygen atoms and the surface silicon adatoms. The chemisorption of the molecule is found to induce subtle distortions to the molecular structure, which are observed in NC-AFM images.

The synthesis and surface-based self-assembly of thymine-functionalised porphyrins is described. Reaction of 1-formylphenyl-3-benzoyl-thymine with suitable pyrollic species leads to the formation of tetra-(phenylthymine)porphyrin (tetra-TP) or mono-thymine-tri-(3,5-di- tert -butylphenyl)porphyrin (mono-TP). Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate the self-association of mono-TP in the solid state through thymine···thymine hydrogen-bonding interactions but in solution this interaction ( K d = 6.1 ± 3.0 M -1 ) is relatively weak in comparison to the heteromolecular interaction between mono-TP and 9-propyladenine ( K = 91.8 ± 20.5 M -1 ). STM studies of the tetratopic hydrogen-bonding tecton, tetra-TP, deposited on an HOPG substrate reveal the formation of an almost perfectly square self-assembled lattice through thymine···thymine hydrogen-bonding. Co-deposition of tetra-TP with 9-propyladenine leads to the adoption of preferable thymine···adenine interactions leading to the formation of a heteromolecular tetra-TP···9-propyladenine hydrogen bonded array including both Watson-Crick thymine···adenine interactions and adenine···adenine hydrogen-bonding. The studies demonstrate a pathway for the self-assembly of tetratopic hydrogen-bonding tectons and the use of preferential heteromolecular thymine···adenine interactions for the disruption of the homomolecular tetra-TP array. Studies of the self-assembly of tetra-TP and 9-propyladenine demonstrate a strong dependence on overall concentration and molar ratio of components indicating the importance of kinetic effects in surface self-assembly processes.

CONSPECTUS: The arrangement of molecular species into extended structures remains the focus of much current chemical science. The organization of molecules on surfaces using intermolecular interactions has been studied to a lesser degree than solution or solid-state systems, and unanticipated observations still lie in store. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds are an attractive tool that can be used to facilitate the self-assembly of an extended structure through the careful design of target building blocks. Our studies have focused on the use of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid diimides (PTCDIs), and related functionalized analogues, to prepare extended arrays on surfaces. These molecules are ideal for such studies because they are specifically designed to interact with appropriate diaminopyridine-functionalized molecules, and related species, through complementary hydrogen bonds. Additionally, PTCDI species can be functionalized in the bay region of the molecule, facilitating modification of the self-assembled structures that can be prepared. Through a combination of PTCDI derivatives, sometimes in combination with melamine, porous two-dimensional arrays can be formed that can entrap guest molecules. The factors that govern the self-assembly processes of PTCDI derivatives are discussed, and the ability to construct suitable target arrays and host-specific molecular species, including fullerenes and transition metal clusters, is demonstrated.
