Purpose of Review: Physical activity impacts energy balance because of its contribution to total energy expenditure. Measuring physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) is often performed by subtracting the estimated 24 h expenditure on basal metabolism (called basal energy expenditure or BEE) from the total energy expenditure (TEE) measured by doubly labelled water minus an estimate of the thermic effect of food (TEF). Alternatively it can be measured as the ratio of TEE/BEE, which is commonly called the physical activity level (PAL)., Recent Findings: PAEE and PAL are widely used in the literature but their shortcomings are seldom addressed. In this review, we outline some of the issues with their use., Summary: TEE and BEE are both measured with error. The estimate of PAEE by difference magnifies these errors and consequently the precision of estimated PAEE is about 3× worse than TEE and 25-35× worse than BEE. A second problem is that the component called PAEE is actually any component of TEE that is not BEE. We highlight how the diurnal variation of BEE, thermoregulatory expenditure and elevations of RMR because of stress will all be part of what is called PAEE and will contribute to a disconnect between what is measured and what energy expenditure is a consequence of physical activity. A growing body of research suggests that visual word recognition is error-prone, and that errors may contribute to inhibitory neighbour frequency effects in word identification and reading. The present study used the neighbourhood frequency effect to examine the relationship between lexical competition and error making during visual word recognition. A novel adaptation of the visual world paradigm (VWP) was used, in which participants selected a briefly presented printed target word from an array containing the target, its higher- or lower-frequency neighbour, an orthographic onset competitor, and an orthographically unrelated distractor word. Analyses of the visual inspection of the arrays suggested that lexical competition occurred when words were correctly identified, as competitors were preferentially viewed as a function of their orthographic similarity with the target, and higher-frequency neighbours were preferentially viewed over lower-frequency neighbours. Orthographic similarity and neighbour frequency also influenced error making. Targets were often mistaken for their neighbours, and these errors were more common for targets with higher-frequency neighbours. The time course of target and neighbour viewing for error trials also provided preliminary evidence for two kinds of errors: early-occurring, perceptual errors and later-occurring selection errors that resulted from unsuccessfully resolved lexical competition. Together, these findings suggest that neighbour frequency effects reflect the contribution of both general lexical competition and occasional errors.

Objectives: We aimed to estimate the effects of indoor and outdoor temperature on wintertime blood pressure (BP) among peri-urban Beijing adults., Methods: We enrolled 1279 adults (ages: 40-89 years) and conducted measurements in two winter campaigns in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. Study staff traveled to participant homes to administer a questionnaire and measure brachial and central BP. Indoor temperature was measured in the 5 min prior to BP measurement. Outdoor temperature was estimated from regional meteorological stations. We used multivariable mixed-effects regression models to estimate the within-individual and between-individual effects of indoor and outdoor temperatures on BP., Results: Indoor and outdoor temperatures ranged from 0.0 to 28 °C and -14.3 to 6.4 °C, respectively. In adjusted models, a 1 °C increase in indoor temperature was associated with decreased SBP [-0.4 mmHg, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.7 to -0.1 (between-individual; brachial and central BP); -0.5 mmHg, 95% CI: -0.8 to -0.2 (within-individual, brachial BP); -0.4 mmHg, 95% CI: -0.7 to -0.2 (within-individual, central BP)], DBP [-0.2 mmHg, 95% CI:-0.4 to -0.03 (between-individual); -0.3 mmHg, 95% CI: -0.5 to -0.04 (within-individual)], and within-individual pulse pressure [-0.2 mmHg, 95% CI: -0.4 to -0.04 (central); -0.3 mmHg, 95% CI: -0.4 to -0.1 (brachial)]. Between-individual SBP estimates were larger among participants with hypertension. There was no evidence of an effect of outdoor temperature on BP., Conclusion: Our results support previous findings of inverse associations between indoor temperature and BP but contrast with prior evidence of an inverse relationship with outdoor temperature. Objective: Motor network plays an important role in people's daily lives. However, until now, the energy consumption mechanism of motor network remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the energy consumption of motor network., Materials and Methods: Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose PET ([F]FDG PET) data of 81 healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were included in this study. Metabolic motor network was constructed on the basis of group independent component analysis. Properties of motor network such as degree and nodal efficiency were investigated using graph theory-based analysis. Furthermore, the relationships between [F]FDG standardized uptake value ratio and these properties of each node were investigated., Results: A motor network comprising of the following 11 regions were found: left primary motor cortex, right primary motor cortex, left secondary motor cortex, right secondary motor cortex, left primary somatosensory cortex, right primary somatosensory cortex, left secondary somatosensory cortex, right secondary somatosensory cortex, left insular cortex, right insular cortex, and left orbital cortex. Graph theory-based analysis indicated that right primary somatosensory cortex and left secondary somatosensory cortex were the hubs of motor network, and the nodal efficiency and nodal degree share the same order. Further investigation found a significantly negative correlation between nodal efficiency and [F]FDG standardized uptake value ratios., Conclusion: This study investigated the energy consumption of motor network and found a relationship between energy consumption and communication efficiency. Drug metabolism in the intestine is considered to substantially contribute to the overall first-pass metabolism, which has been neglected for a long time. It is highly desirable to develop a reliable model to evaluate drug metabolism in the intestine in vitro. In this work, we made the first attempt to develop a biomimetic human gut-on-a-chip for modeling drug metabolism in intestine. In this chip, constant flow, together with porous nitrocellulose membrane and collagen I, mimics an in vivo-like intestinal microenvironment. The Caco-2 cells grown in the chip formed a compact intestinal epithelial layer with continuous expression of the tight junction protein, ZO-1. Furthermore, higher gene expression of villin, sucrase-isomaltase, and alkaline phosphatase demonstrated that cells in the biomimetic human gut-on-a-chip device were more mature with near-physiological functions compared to the control on planar substrate. In particular, cellular metabolic activity was assessed on different substrates, indicating higher metabolic efficiency of ifosfamide and verapamil in the biomimetic human gut-on-a-chip model. Taken together, our results suggested that this biomimetic human gut-on-a-chip promoted the differentiation of intestinal cells with enhanced functionality by creating a biomimetic 3D microenvironment in vitro.
