This study investigated the possibility of teaching dental students to detect radiographic changes suggestive of osteoporosis. Twenty-five panoramic radiographs from dental school patients with a history of osteoporosis and radiographic changes suggestive of the disease and twenty-five normal panoramic radiographs were selected by a clinician from the database of the College of Dentistry, University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Twenty students were taught to use the mandibular cortical index (MCI) and detect changes suggestive of osteoporosis. Students also used a five-point scale to determine the diagnostic accuracy of panoramic images for osteoporosis. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICCC) and Cronbach's alpha internal coefficiency statistical tests were used to evaluate interrater reliability among the twenty students and between the students and the radiologist. To test for differences in diagnosis between the gold standard (dental clinician) and the oral radiologist, we performed a McNemar's chi-square test for matched data. The interrater consistency was excellent for both the students (α=0.902) and between the students and the radiologist (α=0.909). The diagnostic accuracy of panoramic images was moderate (Az=0.81). No statistically significant difference between radiographic and clinical evaluations (McNemar's chi-square=3.063; p=0.0801) was observed. Teaching dental students to recognize radiographic changes suggestive of osteoporosis in routine panoramic radiographs should be emphasized to improve their awareness and identification of this disease.

There are numerous demands for the limited water supplies in the Rocky Mountain (USA) region, and controversies surrounding instream flows abound. A specific problem involves water diversions (i.e., small dams that shunt water out of stream channels) during the summer irrigation season. We developed an approach to assess the effects of restoration of natural or less-than-natural summer flows on trout that accounts for variation in habitat over long segments of low-gradient, alluvial-valley streams. The approach has utility for managers because it can be conducted with hydologic data, aerial photographs, topographic maps, and a spreadsheet without extensive fieldwork. We applied the approach by assessing the effects of different summer flows on abundance of brown trout ( Salmo trutta) in several streams annually dewatered in the Salt River Valley of western Wyoming. The assessment approach can be calibrated for other trout species and areas of the Rocky Mountain region.

The effect of 3 percent, 11 percent, and 16 percent carbamide peroxide bleaching solutions and 35 percent hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel on microleakage of Class V composite resins, resin modified glass ionomer cements, and compomer restorative materials together with corresponding (if indicated) fourth/fifth generation bonding agents was evaluated using previously extracted human teeth. Five groups of Class V cavity preparations were placed in enamel of the facial surfaces of 200 teeth. Groups A through D included 40 restorations each (4 different restorative materials and their accompanying bonding agent multiplied by 10 teeth) treated with 3 percent, 11 percent, and 16 percent carbamide peroxide bleach and 35 percent hydrogen peroxide bleach. Group E included 40 restorations without treatment of bleach and stood as the control. The restorative materials included were: Fuji II LC resin modified glass ionomer cement, Helioprogress composite resin/-Heliobond adhesive system, Aelitefil composite resin/Allbond 2 adhesive and Dyract compomer material/Prime & Bond adhesive system. Bleaching agents included were Rembrandt 3 percent peroxide gel, Perfecta 16 percent carbamide peroxide gel, White & Brite 11 percent carbamide peroxide solution and Superoxyl 35 percent hydrogen peroxide gel. All teeth were thermally stressed for 100 cycles and microleakage were assessed by dye penetration. The results were tabulated using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) testing procedures. The Aelitefil composite resin material behaved the least favorably (relative to microleakage) compared to the other materials when exposed to various concentrations of dental bleaching agents.

A comprehensive clinic for treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal disorders is examined from several points of view. This clinic, affiliated with a comprehensive health sciences university and located in a tertiary medical center, affords efficient access to a variety of health care specialties and subspecialties. Patient sources, severity of dysfunction, and typical patient flow are analyzed in order to describe the clinic's functions.

Many companies are investigating methods of producing composite resins with better physical and mechanical properties through curing methods other than application of the light gun. Such techniques are known as secondary curing techniques. Evidence is presented here of a method for producing a composite resin inlay with improved properties through the use of the typical office autoclave. While the authors do not strongly advocate the use of composite restorations in general as permanent posterior restorations, this method produces enhanced physical and mechanical properties over conventional light cured products. This method is suitable for use as an interim restoration with a high degree of both strength and esthetic value.

Investigation of dissolution of base metal dental casting alloy constituents in aqueous solutions revealed an unexpectedly high level of beryllium as compared with the other constituents. Analysis of atomic emission spectroscopy is presented here showing the outer surface (0-100 A) is decidedly enriched in beryllium as compared with the bulk composition of the alloy. This localization is consistent in all samples and forms of the alloy tested.

A four-week, double-blind study compared the effectiveness of thioridazine and diazepam in 40 geriatric patients with various symptoms of senility. Patients' progress was evaluated with the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, a Modified Nurses' Observation Scale for Inpatient Evaluation (NOSIE), a global rating of degree of illness, and a global rating of degree of overall change. The data indicate that thioridazine was superior to diazepam inrelieving troublesome symptoms of senility.

Understanding of the healing rates of deep pressure ulcers may be enhanced in future studies by relating changes in wound volume to changes in WSA. In this report, a type of dental impression material, vinyl polysiloxane, was used to produce a model of the internal topography of a pressure ulcer. This model was used to obtain volumetric measurements of the wound cavity. A permanent replica (cast) of the wound was also fabricated. Further clinical trials investigating the reliability of this method for measuring the volume of deep pressure ulcers are indicated.
