Dentin hypersensitivity (DH), marked by exposed dentinal tubules, presents as a sharp toothache triggered by stimuli and subsides when the stimuli are removed. To address the limitations of current commercial desensitizers in terms of acid resistance, friction resistance, and stability, a black phosphorus nanosheet-composited methacrylate gelatin hydrogel (GelMA/BP) is developed for DH treatment, leveraging the synergistic effects of photothermal therapy and biomineralization. Incorporating the BP nanosheet provided GelMA/BP with a stable photothermal response and the continuous release of phosphate anions, which blocked dentinal tubules by converting light energy into heat and initiating biomineralization. In vitro desensitizing therapy showed that the dentinal tubule diameter in the GelMA/BP50 group (0-1.13 µm) is significantly reduced compared to that in the DH-model group (0-3.14 µm). The GelMA/BP50 group achieved an 86% tubule occlusion rate, with acid resistance of 80%, friction resistance of 76%, and long-term stability of 74%. In vivo studies further validated the efficacy of GelMA/BP50, showing a reduction in tubule diameter (0-0.37 µm) and an occlusion rate of 79%, which alleviated toothache and increased intake and weight. These results demonstrate that this desensitizing hydrogel acts as an effective dentinal tubule sealant, offering promising clinical benefits for the topical treatment of DH., (© 2025 The Author(s). Objectives: To assess the potential impact of dentin hypersensitivity on the quality of life in people with chronic systemic diseases., Methods: We included 252 volunteers, 18 years or older, with ≥ 6 teeth, and under outpatient medical follow-up for systemic chronic diseases. Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36) was used to assess quality of life (QoL); Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and Dentine Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire (DHEQ-15) were used for oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Dentin hypersensitivity pain was assessed using an evaporative and tactile test, and pain assessment was performed using a numerical rating scale and a verbal rating scale. Medical information was obtained from anamnesis forms and the hospital digital medical records., Results: Of 252 participants, 60% had dentin hypersensitivity. There was a negative impact on the QoL/OHRQoL of individuals with dentin hypersensitivity regarding the vitality, mental health, physical functioning, and bodily pain dimensions of SF-36, and the functional limitation, physical pain, physical disability, and psychological disability dimensions of OHIP-14. Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) affects many patients. Various therapeutic options have been devised to alleviate this condition by achieving dentinal tubules (DT) occlusion. This research aimed to investigate the effects of dipotassium oxalate-containing mouthwash, diode laser and their combination on DT occlusion., Methods: Forty dentin samples were obtained from 20 human single-rooted third molars, 40 dentin specimens were obtained, and exposed DT were created in vitro. They were assigned into four groups: Group 1 (n = 10), the control group where no treatment was applied; Group 2 (n = 10), a mouthwash with a 1.4% dipotassium oxalate was applied twice for 60 s during a 5-day period in a shaker at 100 rpm; Group 3 (n = 10), a combination of the same mouthwash and an 810 nm diode laser at an output power of 0.25 W in continuous mode was applied for 60 s without contact at a distance of 3-4 mm; and Group 4 (n = 10), only a diode laser with the same protocol was applied. Occlusion of the DT was observed by scanning electron microscopy., Results: The analysis revealed occlusion of the DT in all treatment groups; however, the effects were more pronounced in the combined treatment group (Group 3). Compared with the test groups, the control group had significantly more open DT in 100 µm 2 (p < 0.01). The difference between the Group 2 and Group 4 was not significant (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: DT occlusion was achieved via the use of a mouthwash containing 1.4% dipotassium oxalate and an 810 nm diode laser. When dentin is directly exposed to the oral cavity for various reasons, such as a lack of enamel on the tooth surface, external stimuli to the dentin often cause transient discomfort known as dentin hypersensitivity. In order to block the incoming stimulus signal, an ideal treatment is to induce the production of minerals to block the dentinal tubules. In this work, a dentin-desensitizing plugging material was prepared by modifying mesoporous bioactive glass with gelatin, the mineralization and desensitization effects of which were compared with Gluma in in vitro experiments. These experiments confirmed that gelatin-modified bioactive glass (MBG@PDA@Gel) is more effective than traditional desensitizing agents at blocking dentin tubules. Following the successful synthesis of MBG@PDA@Gel, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and other tests, the treatment of demineralized dentin with MBG@PDA@Gel demonstrated that the dentinal tubules were tightly blocked under scanning electron microscopy. MBG@PDA@Gel induces minerals in deeper layers of dentinal tubules, promoting remineralization and forming a unified structure with the tubule blockage. Animal studies showed that MBG@PDA@Gel can remineralize demineralized dentin, and it is stable in the oral cavity and does not fall out. MBG@PDA@Gel not only enhances the biocompatibility of the nanoparticle but also results in an overall uniform and rapid remineralization of the demineralized dentin.

Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common oral condition that is associated with severe dental pain. Pain relief is a key focus of the treatment of DH. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the blocking and antacid effects of gallic acid (GA) combined with sodium fluoride (NaF) on dentinal tubules in vitro., Methods: Ninety dentin discs from human third molars were treated with 6% citric acid for 2 min. Then, the surface morphologies of ten dentin discs were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The remaining samples were randomly divided into four groups: the NaF group, which was treated with 1000 ppm NaF; the GA group, which was treated with 4000 ppm GA; the GA + NaF group, which was treated with 1000 ppm NaF + 4000 ppm GA; and the blank group, which was treated with deionized water. The dentin permeability of each sample was measured with a water-filled system before processing and after 7 days of treatment. Dentin morphology and surface deposits were observed by SEM. Then, samples from the NaF, GA + NaF and blank groups were subjected to an acid challenge by incubation with 0.02% citric acid for 2 min. SEM and a water-filled system were used to evaluate the blocking and antacid effects of NaF and GA + NaF., Results: 1. NaF and GA + NaF significantly decreased dentin permeability. The effect of the GA + NaF treatment was more significant. After acid challenge, both groups still exhibited decreased dentin permeability compared with the initial assessment. 2. Compared with the NaF group, the GA + NaF group had more mineral deposits on the dentin surface and dentin tubules. After acid challenge, the deposits in the GA + NaF group were still clearly visible., Conclusion: The combined effect of GA and NaF on reducing dentin permeability by blocking open dentin tubules is better than that of NaF alone. Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) manifests as sharp and uncomfortable pain due to the exposure of dentinal tubules (DTs) following the erosion of tooth enamel. Desensitizing agents commonly used in clinical practice have limitations such as limited depth of penetration, slow remineralization and no antimicrobial properties. To alleviate these challenges, our study designed a lactoferrin-derived amyloid nanofilm (PTLF nanofilm) inspired by the saliva-acquired membrane (SAP). The nanofilm utilises Tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP) to disrupt the disulfide bonds of lactoferrin (LF) under physiological conditions. The PTLF nanofilm modifies surfaces across various substrates and effectively prevents the early and stable adhesion of cariogenic bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Simultaneously, it adheres rapidly and securely to demineralized dentin surfaces, facilitating in-situ remineralization of HAP through a simple immersion process. This leads to the formation of a remineralized layer resembling natural dentin, with an occlusion depth of dentinal tubules exceeding 80 µm after three days. The in vivo and vitro results confirm that the PTLF nanofilm possesses good biocompatibility and its ability to exert simultaneous antimicrobial effects and dentin remineralization. Accordingly, this innovative bifunctional PTLF amyloid coating offers promising prospects for the management of DH-related conditions. Objective: To evaluate the influence of air-abrasion of enamel with three different desensitizing powders on the whitening effect of a bleaching gel containing 40% H 2 O 2 , which was used for in-office tooth bleaching., Materials and Methods: Forty human incisors, extracted and prepared, were acquired for this study and subsequently randomized into four groups (n = 10). The control group specimens underwent no pretreatment prior to the bleaching procedure, whereas the remaining three groups underwent air abrasion using distinct desensitizing powders; (a) Sylc, which contains bioglass 45S5; (b) BioMinF, which contains calcium phospho-fluoro-silicate glass; and (c) MI Pearls, which contains nano-hydroxyapatite, 1 h preceding the Opalescence Boost PF 40% bleaching procedure. Color measurements were conducted using a double-beam UV-Vis spectrophotometer at four distinct time points (prior to bleaching, 24 h, 15 days, and 30 days post-bleaching)., Results: Tooth color change outcomes revealed that there were no statistically significant results with respect to the interaction of the two criteria (treatments and time) (p = 0.990). Objectives: In this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of Gluma and high-power 980-nm diode laser, alone or in combination, in the treatment of cervical dentin hypersensitivity., Methods: A total of 20 patients (5 men and 15 women), aged 25 to 60 years, who met the inclusion criteria, were enrolled in this study. A total of 60 teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups: G1, 980 nm diode laser (in 2 sessions within a 1-week interval); G2, Gluma (in 2 sessions within a 1-week interval); G3, 980 nm diode laser plus Gluma; and G4: control. Thermal (cold spray) and air blast (air syringe of dental unit) stimuli were used to evaluate cervical dentin hypersensitivity in the patients. Their pain response was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) before treatment (baseline), in the first treatment session (15 minutes after treatment), in the second treatment session (after 1 week), and in 2-week, 1-month, and 3-month follow-up sessions. The obtained data were analysed using non-parametric tests, including Kruskal-Wallis test, Friedman test, Mann-Whitney test, and Wilcoxon test, in SPSS Version 22 at a significance level of P < .05., Results: Based on the results, there was a significant difference in the average VAS scores for cold and air blast stimuli between the 4 groups 1 month after the intervention (P < .05). Meanwhile, the laser group had the lowest VAS score for cold and air stimuli. Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate how effectively the bioelectric toothbrush can alleviate dentin hypersensitivity (DHS) by using electrostatic forces to remove biofilm from the tooth surface., Methods: This study divided inpatients of a preventative dental clinic between March and October 2023 into the following two groups: a bioelectric toothbrush group (BET, n = 25) and a non-bioelectric toothbrush group (NBET, n = 18) as a control group. This was a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial study. A survey, the number of hypersensitive teeth, the O'Leary index, the visual analogue scale (VAS), and the Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale (SCASS) were also investigated., Results: When fluoride toothpaste was applied with a bioelectric toothbrush, the subjects' VAS and SCASS scores reflecting symptoms of hyperesthesia significantly decreased over time, as did the number of hypersensitive teeth and the O'Leary index. Moreover, the bioelectric toothbrush was confirmed to be effective in removing dental plaque., Conclusions: Dental clinics must actively promote bioelectric toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste for patients suffering from hyperesthesia and pain. Furthermore, these items can be suggested as preventative oral care products to patients with potential hyperesthesia.

The aim of the study was to measure the degree of dentine surface roughness caused by five distinct lasers used to treat dentine hypersensitivity, as well as to evaluate the subsequent bacterial colonization on these irradiated surfaces. Sixty human maxillary premolar teeth without caries or restoration which were extracted for periodontal reasons were used in this study. Five different types of lasers were applied to the root dentin surface. Tested samples were divided into six groups of 10 samples each; control, diode (810 nm), diode (980 nm), Nd: YAG, Er: YAG, and Er, Cr: YSGG laser groups. The arithmetic mean of the surface roughness values (Ra) and the average roughness over a measurement area (Sa) were measured pre- and post-application using any of the laser types. Swab samples were then collected from the dentin surface. Following a 24-hour incubation period at 37 °C, the colony forming units were counted using a stereoscope. The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the surface roughness values pre- and post-application (Ra and Sa, respectively) in the Er, Cr: YSGG laser group (p = 0.037,p = 0.007). No significant difference was observed in the other groups (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the number of bacterial colonies observed between the test and control groups. Diode and Nd: YAG lasers showed either a decrease or no change in surface roughness; however, the hard tissue lasers (Er: YAG, Er, Cr: YSGG) showed an increase. Purpose: The aim of current study was to evaluate percentage root coverage (RC%) in isolated Miller class III/RT2 labial gingival recession (GR) associated with malaligned mandibular anteriors, using interdisciplinary periodontal-orthodontic treatment as compared to mucogingival surgery alone., Methods: Thirty-six systemically healthy patients having isolated Miller class III/RT2 GR with respect to malaligned mandibular anteriors, were randomly divided into test group: mucogingival surgery using subepithelial connective tissue graft followed by orthodontic treatment and control group: mucogingival surgery alone. Primary clinical parameters included (RC%), recession depth, keratinized tissue width, mid-labial clinical attachment level, interdental clinical attachment level (iCAL), periodontal phenotype (PP), gingival thickness (GT), root coverage esthetics score (RES) and hypersensitivity. Total duration of follow up was 12 months., Results: Mean RC% was significantly more achieved in test group (66.67%±40.82%) in comparison to control group (39.93%±31.41%) at the end of study ( P =0.049). Further, complete root coverage was attained in 5/8 cases of test group versus 1/2 cases of control group after 3/12 months respectively. RES and hypersensitivity, showed statistically significant improvement after complete follow up period in both the groups. An ideal RES score of 10 was achieved in 4/7 cases of test group while in 1/2 cases of control group after 3/12 months respectively. Correlation analysis revealed significant negative correlation between RC% and iCAL. Background This study aimed to explore the potential efficacy and safety of laser therapy compared with traditional desensitizing treatments in the management of dentin hypersensitivity. Methodology A comprehensive observational study was conducted on 138 adult individuals aged 18-65 diagnosed with dentin hypersensitivity. Participants were allocated to either the laser therapy or traditional treatment group. The laser therapy group received treatment using the Fotona LightWalker® Erbium laser at 2,940 nm. The energy density was set at 20 J/cm² using continuous and contact modes, with the laser tip held perpendicularly to the irradiated site. Each session lasted five minutes, conducted bi-weekly for three months. Traditional treatment included the in-office application of 5% sodium fluoride varnish application once every 15 days for three months and the use of desensitizing toothpaste as part of regular oral hygiene routines. Follow-up assessments were conducted 6 and 12 months post-treatment to evaluate the longevity and stability of the treatment effects. Primary outcomes were assessed by dentin hypersensitivity reduction measured using Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores and tactile hypersensitivity assessments. Results Laser therapy consistently surpassed traditional treatment in reducing dentin hypersensitivity, as reflected by the significantly lower VAS scores. Notably, at 3, 6, and 12 months, laser therapy demonstrated mean VAS scores of 2.5 (±1.5), 1.2 (±0.9), and 0.6 (±0.5), respectively, while the traditional treatment group exhibited higher scores (3.8 ± 1.2, 4.5 ± 1.0, and 4.0 ± 0.7, respectively). Statistical analysis revealed that these differences were highly significant (p < 0.001). Tactile hypersensitivity assessments echoed these findings, with laser therapy consistently maintaining lower scores (0.8 ± 0.7 at 6 months, 0.4 ± 0.3 at 12 months) compared to traditional treatment (3.5 ± 1.0 at 6 months, 4.0 ± 0.7 at 12 months) with statistical significance at all time points (p < 0.001). Conclusions Although this study lacks a randomized controlled design, the observed substantial reduction in VAS scores and tactile hypersensitivity assessments, along with the favorable safety profile of laser therapy, suggest its potential as an effective alternative for managing dentin hypersensitivity., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Introduction Tooth sensitivity, or dentin hypersensitivity (DH), is characterized by sharp, sudden pain in response to stimuli such as cold, heat, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. In Malaysia, there is limited understanding of the epidemiological aspects of tooth sensitivity, necessitating focused research. The condition results from the exposure of dentinal tubules transmitting stimuli to nerves within the pulp, with contributing factors including gingival recession, enamel erosion, and periodontal disease. This study aims to investigate the factors associated with tooth sensitivity among patients at the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) using advanced statistical methods. Methods This study employed a computational research design to develop an ordinal regression and bootstrap methodology using the RStudio software (Posit PBC, Boston, MA) to analyze secondary data from the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Six variables were analyzed: tooth wear severity, patient's age, gender, smoking status, alcohol status, and type of toothbrush. The study was conducted in three phases: 1) the development of an ordinal regression model, 2) the development of algorithms for ordinal regression and bootstrap method, and 3) validation using tooth sensitivity data. Results The analysis revealed that the replication with 1000 samples provided the most precise estimates with small standard errors (SE) and consistently significant effects across variables. Tooth sensitivity was influenced by age, toothpaste type, toothbrush type, and brushing frequency. Conclusion The study highlights the importance of considering multiple variables such as age, toothpaste type, toothbrush type, and brushing frequency in understanding tooth sensitivity. The combined ordinal regression and bootstrap technique significantly improved the model's accuracy, providing valuable insights for dental health professionals. This split-mouth blinded randomized controlled study compared the efficacy of a desensitizing agent with oxalate/resin polymer and a universal adhesive containing mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) for dentin hypersensitivity (DH) relief, using Schiff sensitivity score (SSS) and visual analog scale (VAS). Split quadrants containing teeth with DH were treated with either MS Coat ONE or Hi-Bond Universal with MBG as the functional additive. Assessments at baseline, immediately post-application, and at 1- and 2-week follow-ups used standardized stimulus protocols (air, cold, and acid). The SSS difference was the primary outcome, while the VAS difference was the secondary outcome. A mixed linear effect model performed statistical analysis. Immediate DH reduction occurred in response to air stimuli, with a significant decrease in Group HB than in Group MS (p = 0.0178). Cold stimulus reduction exhibited a gradual cumulative effect, with consistently greater reductions in Group HB than in Group MS (p ≤ 0.0377). Both groups effectively managed acidic stimuli, with no significant differences (p > 0.05). The VAS scores decreased gradually over the follow-up period (p < 0.0001). This study highlights the differential efficacy of treatments for various DH triggers and recommends specific approaches based on different stimulus types. The universal adhesive containing MBG demonstrated DH relief potential, promising efficacy identical to or superior to that of a dedicated desensitizing agent. Further research exploring the long-term efficacy and underlying mechanisms is warranted. The universal adhesive containing MBG can be adopted as an in-office desensitizing agent for DH relief. Objectives: This study assessed alterations in sensitivity among symptomatic noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) following the application of 3 low-level diode laser wavelengths before composite restoration. It analyzed the changes in dentin topography using a scanning electron microscope (SEM)., Materials and Methods: Nine patients with 36 NCCLs were randomly assigned intra-individually to 4 groups based on the laser wavelength: laser simulation, 445 nm, 660 nm, and 970 nm. Cavity preparation, irradiation, and composite restoration were performed for each lesion. Sensitivity to cold stimuli was recorded using a visual analog scale (VAS) before the intervention (baseline) and at 1 day, 14 days, 1-, 3-, and 6-month. Pulp sensibility was recorded using an electrical pulp tester (EPT) at baseline, before treatment, and at 3- and 6-month. Additionally, an in vitro examination was performed on 12 extracted human molars to yield 12 dentin discs. Each disc was randomly divided into 4 quadrants to receive the same laser wavelengths to determine the diameters of the tubules using SEM. Results were analyzed statistically for clinical studies by the Friedman test, while ANOVA (RM-ANOVA) was conducted in-vitro, followed by the Bonferroni test in the case of significance (P < .05)., Results: VAS readings decreased across all groups, with a significant decrease observed for 660 nm and 970 nm from 14 days to 6-month, while at 445 nm there was a significant decrease at 6-month compared to the control (P < .05). EPT showed a significant decrease in pain threshold levels at 660 nm and 970 nm at 3- and 6-month, while 445 nm showed a significant decrease at 6-month compared to the control (P < .05). The mean tubular diameter at 445 nm decreased, with no significant difference from the control, whereas a significant decrease was found at 660 nm and 970 nm compared to the control (P < .05)., Conclusions: Prior to composite restoration in symptomatic NCCLs, diode lasers with a wavelength of 660 nm showed the highest reduction in sensitivity, followed by 970 nm, whereas 445 nm diode lasers showed the least reduction. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying odontoblast damage repair in dentin hypersensitivity (DH) and the role of Yes-associated protein (YAP) in this process., Methods: The DH model was constructed in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, and the in vivo expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, YAP, and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) was detected by immunohistochemistry. COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to simulate the dentinal tubule fluid flow velocity and corresponding fluid shear stress (FSS) on the odontoblast processes. MDPC-23 cells were cultured in vitro and loaded with a peristaltic pump for 1 hour at FSS values of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 dyne/cm 2 . The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, and YAP was detected by immunofluorescence. Verteporfin (a YAP-specific inhibitor) was utilised to confirm the effect of YAP on the expression of dentineogenesis-related protein under FSS., Results: The level and duration of external mechanical stimuli have an effect on the functional expression of odontoblasts. In DH, the harder the food that is chewed, the faster the flow of the dentinal tubule fluid and the greater the FSS on the odontoblast processes. The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, and YAP can be promoted when the FSS is less than 0.3 dyne/cm 2 . Introduction: The objective of this in vitro study was to compare the effectiveness of a propolis-based herbal toothpaste with 5% sodium fluoride varnishin obstructing human dentinal tubules; Scanning electron microscopy was utilised to obtain quantitative and qulitative data on tubular obstruction., Methods: Thirty-nine extracted human premolar teeth were collected. The cementum layer was removed using a water-cooled diamond bur and the smear layer using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) 17%. Then, the samples were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 13 each), as follows: group 1: dentin discs exposed to the propolis-based herbal toothpaste (Herbex); group 2: dentin discs exposed to 5% sodium fluoride varnish; and group 3: control. Then, all discs were observed and imaged in 4 non-overlapping fields by an electron microscope at 2000× magnification. The topography and number of open, closed, and semi-closed tubules were counted in all images. The data were analysed using Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Friedman test. The statistical analysis was performed with SPSS statistic 22.0 software, with a significance level of α = 0.05., Results: In pairwise comparisons of the groups considering the percentage of open, closed, and semi-closed tubules, the difference was not statistically significant between the 5% sodium fluoride varnish and propolis groups in the closed and semi-closed tubules, but it was statistically significant with the control group. Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the most challenging and persistent dental complaints characterized by transient, intense pain triggered by various stimuli. It affects a significant portion of the global population, predominantly those aged 20-40. This study aims to evaluate the desensitizing efficacy of seventh-generation dentin bonding agents (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) against a control group using Bifluorid 12 by Voco in mitigating DH within a month of the follow-up period., Methods: This was a single-center, parallel-group, double-blind, controlled randomized clinical trial conducted at Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 105 patients with DH were allocated into three groups for this study. The patients were divided into three groups (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) and the control group containing fluoride varnish (Bifluorid 12 by Voco). Discomfort Interval Scale scores and Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale scores were recorded at baseline, immediately after the intervention, after 01 weeks, and after 01 month., Results: All the materials demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in discomfort and sensitivity (DIS scores p-value 0.01) immediately after 01 week and over a period of 01 month after treatment compared with the baseline scores before application, with no single material proving superior over the one-month observation period. The study also provided insights into dental hygiene practices, with a significant majority using a toothbrush and sensitivity patterns, with cold stimuli being the most common cause of sensitivity., Conclusion: The study demonstrates that Single Bond Universal, Xeno V+, and Bifluorid 12 are equally effective in reducing dentin hypersensitivity, with no distinct superiority observed over a one-month period. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of diode laser and ozone gas in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DHS)., Methods: One hundred thirty-two teeth from 44 patients with moderate DHS were randomized into 3 groups according to a split-mouth design. In the diode laser group, the operator irradiated the superficial dentin exposed with an 808-nm wavelength and incremental power from 0.2 to 0.6 W with a 20-second interval. In the ozone gas group, the operator applied a high dose of ozone (32 g/m 3 ) for 30 seconds using a silicon cup. In the placebo group, no therapy was applied. The dentin sensitivity level was evaluated upon enrollment (T0), immediately after treatment (T1), 3 months post-treatment (T2), and 6 months post-treatment (T3) with a cold air blast challenge and tactile stimuli. The pain severity was quantified according to the visual analogue scale. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to scrutinize potential statistical disparities among the treatments. Statistical significance was predetermined at P < .05., Results: A significant decrease of DHS was observed in the ozone gas group and the `diode laser group immediately after treatment and after 3 and 6 months of the therapy. After 6 months from the therapy, the sensitivity values in the teeth treated with ozone gas remained statistically lower than those treated with diode lasers (P < .05)., Conclusions: A laser diode and ozone gas are both efficient as dentin sensitivity treatment. Objectives: Even though tooth sensitivity is a prevalent dental issue today, more information is available to patients via social media concerning the subject. This study aimed to examine what patients may learn about tooth sensitivity from online videos on YouTube™ and evaluate the accuracy of the information given., Methods: In this cross-sectional investigation, two experienced periodontologists used the keyword 'tooth sensitivity' to conduct an organized search into YouTube videos containing knowledge regarding dentin hypersensitivity. Videos' type, origin, number of days since upload, duration, number of views, likes and dislikes, and comments were all noted; the viewing rate and interaction index were calculated. Videos were graded based on their content. The DISCERN and Global Quality Scales were used to rate each video's level of quality and reliability., Results: After the initial 260 videos were examined, 199 were kept for additional study. Healthcare professionals, hospitals, and colleges posted the great majority of the videos. There was a significant positive relationship between the number of views and Total Content scores of the videos, the viewing rate, comments, and likes (p < 0.05). Objectives: The dentin exposure always leads to dentin hypersensitivity and the acid-resistant/abrasion-resistant stability of current therapeutic approaches remain unsatisfatory. Inspired by the excellent self-polymerization/adherence activity of mussels and the superior mineralization ability of bioactive glass, a novel radial mesoporous bioactive nanoglass coated with polydopamine (RMBG@PDA) was developed for prevention and management of dentin hypersensitivity., Methods: Radial mesoporous bioactive nanoglass (RMBG) was synthesized by the sol-gel process combined with the cetylpyridine bromide template self-assembly technique. RMBG@PDA was synthesized by a self-polymerization process involving dopamine and RMBG in an alkaline environment. Then, the nanoscale morphology, chemical structure, crystalline phase and Zeta potential of RMBG and RMBG@PDA were characterized. Subsequently, the ion release ability, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity of RMBG and RMBG@PDA in vitro were investigated. Moreover, an in vitro experimental model of dentin hypersensitivity was constructed to evaluate the effectiveness of RMBG@PDA on dentinal tubule occlusion, including resistances against acid and abrasion. Finally, the Young's modulus and nanohardness of acid-etched dentin were also detected after RMBG@PDA treatment., Results: RMBG@PDA showed a typical nanoscale morphology and noncrystalline structure. The use of RMBG@PDA on the dentin surface could effectively occlude dentinal tubules, reduce dentin permeability and achieve excellent acid- and abrasion-resistant stability. Objectives: This study aimed to establish a single-session associative protocol for non-restorative management of dentin hypersensitivity (DH)., Materials and Methods: Twenty-four individuals with DH and a minimum sensitivity level of 4 on the visual analog scale (VAS) were selected. The study was conducted in a split-mouth design, with each participant ( n = 20) having at least 1 affected tooth in all quadrants. The management protocols consisted of control group: universal adhesive, Neural Desensitizing Protocol group: 5% potassium nitrate, Mixed Desensitizing Protocol (PAM) group: 5% sodium fluoride and 5% potassium nitrate, Remineralizing Desensitizing Protocol (PDR) group: surface-partially reacted glass technology photopolymerizable varnish. Evaluations were performed immediately after application, at 1 week, 1 month, 2 months, and 12 months using the VAS sensitivity test., Results: The scores were subjected to statistical analysis using the Friedman test ( p < 0.05), Durbin-Conover test ( p < 0.05), and Wilcoxon test ( p < 0.05). At the 12-month evaluation, all groups showed statistically significant differences compared to the initial assessment. For the evaluation after 12 months, there was a statistically significant difference between the PAM group, the control group, and the PDR group., Conclusions: It can be concluded that all groups were effective in controlling DH, but there were significant results in the control group and PDR group. Introduction Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is the most common problem encountered by clinicians. It can be managed either by blocking neural activities or by occluding tubules. Ozonated oil facilitates the simple passage of desensitizing agents into dentinal tubules. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ozonated oil on dentinal tubule occlusion before and after the application of desensitizing toothpaste. Materials and methods The study was carried out in Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, KIIT (Deemed to be University), Bhubaneswar, India. The sample size of the study was 80. The first group contained specimens for control. The second group comprised specimens treated with ozonated oil. The third group comprised specimens being treated with a desensitizing agent. The fourth group contained specimens treated with both the desensitizing agent and ozonated oil. The specimens then received an acid challenge. The specimens were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) before any therapy, after the application of the therapeutic agents and after the 37.5% ortho-phosphoric acid challenge. Results Inferential statistics to compare between the groups was calculated using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistics. Post-hoc Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) was performed to compare the groups. The mean scores of the partial tubular occlusion of Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 before the acid challenge were 0.035, 0.691, 0.564 and 0.368, respectively. The maximum score was obtained in the case of Group 2, which was statistically significant. The mean scores for partial tubule occlusion after the acid challenge for Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 were 0.055, 0.531, 0.733 and 0.142, respectively. There was evidence of maximum partial tubule occlusion after the acid treatment in the case of Group 3. The mean scores of Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 before the acid challenge were 0.019, 0.309, 0.442 and 0.609, respectively. The maximum score was obtained in the case of Group 4, implying a greater number of total tubular occlusions before the acid challenge. The mean scores of the total tubular occlusions after the acid challenge for Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 were 0.047, 0.465, 0.272 and 0.890, respectively. There was evidence of maximum tubule occlusion in the case of Group 4, which was statistically significant. Conclusion Overall, the application of a desensitizing toothpaste with ozonated oil holds promise as a potentially more effective treatment approach for DH. Objectives: To synthesize and characterize a novel dentin adhesive containing Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate (β-TCP) nanoparticles and test its ability to reduce dentin permeability (dP)., Methods: Experimental adhesives were prepared by mixing Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, HEMA (50/25/25 wt.%), photo-initiators, and inhibitors. The following groups were tested: Experimental adhesives without β-TCP (Exp.); with 10 wt.% β-TCP (Exp.10 wt.% β-TCP); with 15 wt.% β-TCP (Exp.15 wt.% β-TCP), Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SBMP) and Clearfil SE Protect Bond (CFPB). Degree of conversion (DC%, 10 and 20 s); Flexural Strength (FS), Knoop Hardness (KHN), and Cell Viability (OD%) tests were performed. dP was evaluated by hydraulic conductance, using human dentin disks (n=12), at three-time intervals: post-EDTA (T 0 ); post-treatment (T 1 ); and post-erosion/abrasion cycling (T 2 ). Data were statistically analyzed (α=0.05)., Results: For all groups, exposure time for 20 s presented a higher DC% than for 10 s. For FS, filled adhesives did not differ from unfilled and from CFPB. Experimental adhesives did not differ among them and showed lower KHN than the commercial products. Cell viability did not differ among adhesives, except Exp. 15 wt.%, which showed lower OD% than Exp., Exp. 10% and, CFPB. For dP, only Exp.10 and 15 wt.% β-TCP did not present difference between the times T 1 and T 2 . After cycling, Exp.10 wt.% β-TCP presented lower permeability than Exp. and CFPB., Conclusions: The incorporation of 10 wt.% β-TCP nanoparticles into the resin-based dental material did not affect its mechanical properties and biocompatibility, and promoted the greatest reduction in dentin permeability, sustaining this effect under erosive/abrasive challenges., Clinical Significance: A novel resin-based dental material containing β-TCP nanoparticles was able to reduce dentin permeability, maintaining its efficacy after erosive/abrasive challenges. This study aims to evaluate the effect of Teethmate, Bifluoride 12, and Copal Varnish on the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity and the pulpal blood flow using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) after full crown preparations. Eighteen patients with 42 teeth with dentine hypersensitivity after full crown preparations were randomly treated with Teethmate, Bifluoride 12, and Copal Varnish. Dentine hypersensitivity was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS) and Schiff air index (SAI). LDF was used to assess the pulpal blood flow and results were recorded in perfusion units (PU). All measurements were performed at baseline, 5 min, 7 days, and 1 month after the application of desensitizers. Data were statistically analyzed by Wilcoxon and two-way ANOVA tests (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the tested desensitizers regarding VAS and PU values. VAS values decreased significantly at 7 days and 1 month after the application of desensitizers compared to baseline in all groups. The decrease in PU values significantly differed only in the Copal Varnish group at 5 min and 7 days after the application of the desensitizer (p < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between different times regarding SAI scores in all groups (p < 0.05). Teethmate, Bifluoride 12, and Copal Varnish showed similar effectiveness on dentine hypersensitivity and pulpal blood flow. Long-term clinical trials with larger sample sizes and histological studies are needed to evaluate their impacts on pulpal status., (© 2023. Purpose: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a prevalent condition, but long-term effective treatments are scarce. Differentiation of odontoblast-like cells is promising for inducing tertiary dentinogenesis and ensuring sustained therapeutic efficacy against DH. This study examined the effects and mechanism of action of mild heat stress (MHS) on the differentiation of odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells., Methods: We used a heating device to accurately control the temperature and duration, mimicking the thermal microenvironment of odontoblast-like cells. Using this device, the effects of MHS on cell viability and differentiation were examined. Cell viability was assessed using the MTT assay. The expression and nucleoplasmic ratio of the yes-associated protein (YAP) were examined by western blotting and immunofluorescence. The gene expression levels of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and dentin matrix protein-1 (DMP1) were measured using qPCR. Dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) expression was evaluated using immunofluorescence and immunoblotting. Verteporfin was used to inhibit YAP activity., Results: Mild heat stress (MHS) enhanced the odontoblast differentiation of MDPC-23 cells while maintaining cell viability. MHS also increased YAP activity, as well as the levels of HSP25 mRNA, HSP70 mRNA, HSP90α mRNA, DMP1 mRNA, and DSPP protein. However, after YAP inhibition, both cell viability and the levels of HSP90α mRNA, DMP1 mRNA, and DSPP protein were reduced., Conclusion: YAP plays a crucial role in maintaining cell viability and promoting odontoblast differentiation of MDPC-23 cells under MHS. Consequently, MHS is a potential therapeutic strategy for DH, and boosting YAP activity could be beneficial for maintaining cell viability and promoting odontoblast differentiation.

This report describes a case of gingival recession in multiple teeth with severe dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in which treatment included periodontal plastic surgery. The patient was a 34-year-old woman presenting with the chief complaint of DH at gingivalrecession sites. The patient had undergone orthodontic treatment when she was 30 years old. An initial examination revealed that none of the sites showed a probing depth of ≥4 mm and 21% of sites bleeding on probing. The clinical diagnosis was plaque-induced gingivitis. Teeth #14, 16, 23, 25, 26, 34, 35, 45, and 46 showed gingival recession ranging from 1 to 4 mm. Gingival recession at #45 extended to the muco-gingival junction. No association with alveolar bone loss was observed in any of the interdental areas. Therefore, the sites presenting with gingival recession were classified as Miller Class I, except #45, which was classified as Class II. The periodontal phenotype was 'thin'. Based on the results of clinical examination and diagnosis, initial periodontal therapy (IP) consisting of oral hygiene instruction, supra-gingival scaling, application of a desensitizing agent, and composite resin restoration was performed. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score, which was used to assess degree of DH, showed only a minimal decrease, however, at post-IP. Subsequently, a modified coronally advanced tunnel (a modified technique for achieving a coronally advanced flap) using a connective tissue graft was performed in #14, 16, 23, 25, 26, 45, and 46. After re-evaluation, the patient was placed on maintenance care. The series of interventions resulted in a considerable improvement in the VAS and oral health-related quality of life scores. Furthermore, a change in the periodontal phenotype, from 'thin' to 'thick', was observed, which may contribute to the prevention of further gingival recession and DH. The present case suggests that periodontal plastic surgery is an effective treatment modality for the resolution of DH.

Background and objectives Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) treatment is one of the main challenges dentists face in their daily clinical practice. Current therapies provide only temporary relief and require multiple applications to exhibit results, and there is a lack of evidence related to the long-term effects of these agents. Nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) and pro-argin (8.0% arginine-calcium carbonate) have recently been used for dentin desensitization with a one-time in-office application, but the effects are interim. However, a standard treatment protocol demands definitive or enduring results. Since iontophoresis amplifies the transport of neutral and ionized drugs across a membrane, the use of these desensitizing agents with iontophoresis may be beneficial to accomplish satisfactory results. This study was conducted to evaluate whether iontophoresis could enable better penetration of nano-hydroxyapatite and pro-argin into the dentin, enhancing and prolonging their therapeutic effect. Materials and methods Forty-five participants with dentin hypersensitivity in the age group of 20 to 60 years were included. In each individual, four teeth with cervical lesions (one from each quadrant) were selected and divided randomly into four groups: group I: desensitizing paste containing nano-hydroxyapatite, group II: desensitizing paste containing nano-hydroxyapatite with iontophoresis, group III: desensitizing paste containing pro-argin, and group IV: desensitizing paste containing pro-argin with iontophoresis; followed by one-time application of the agents. Sensitivity was assessed by tactile, air blast, and cold-graded thermal tests (CGTTs) before and immediately after application, after one week, and at the end of the first, third, and sixth months. Statistical analysis Statistical analysis was done by repeated measures ANOVA for within-group comparison. Intergroup comparison was done using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test. Results All the groups showed a statistically significant reduction in dentin hypersensitivity (p<0.001). The reduction in hypersensitivity in various groups can be graded as group II (3.578/1.800/1.556) > group IV (3.367/1.755/1.555) > group I (2.3781/1.022/0.822) > group III (2.222/0.911/0.778) as evaluated by tactile, air blast, and cold-graded thermal tests, respectively. Group II and group IV presented a significant reduction in sensitivity levels consistent for up to six months. Conclusion Nano-hydroxyapatite and pro-argin can be used effectively for reducing dentin hypersensitivity. Objectives: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) affects patients' oral health-related quality of life, but is not always optimally treated in dental offices. The objectives were to assess dentists' DH-related education, knowledge, and professional behavior and explore relationships between education, knowledge, and behavior., Methods: Survey data were collected from 220 ADA members in the United States. Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed., Results: About half of the respondents agreed/strongly agreed that their dental school had educated them well about diagnosing DH in classroom-based (53.6%) and clinical settings (48.9%). Lower percentages agreed being well educated about treating DH (40.9%/37.3%). The majority self-educated themselves about DH after dental school by attending continuing education courses in person or online (60.6%/36.8%), reading articles (64.1%), or consulting with colleagues (59.6%). The majority knew that patients with DH describe their pain as stimulated (91.4%) and that recessed gingiva (89.6%), abrasion lesions (72.3%), tooth whitening (63.1%), erosion lesions (58.6%), and abfraction lesions (51.4%) are risk factors for DH. The majority diagnosed DH with patient self-reporting, confirmed by exams (81.8%), applying air blasts (53.7%), or cold-water (52.3%). They treated patients with DH often/very often with over-the-counter desensitizing agents (90%), and prescribing fluoride formulations toothpaste (82.8%) and/or potassium nitrate toothpastes (60.9%). In their offices, the majority (73.2%) educated their patients often/very often about DH and used fluoride dental varnish for treating DH (71.8%). The more recently respondents had graduated from dental school, the more positively they described their dental school education (r = 0.14; p < 0.05), the more ways to diagnose DH they used (r = 0.16; p < 0.05) and the more often they used fluoride dental varnish in their offices (r = 0.23; p < 0.001). The more dentists had educated themselves, the more methods for diagnosing DH they used (r = 0.23; p < 0.001) and the more often they used potassium oxalate products (r = 0.19; p < 0.01), Arginine/calcium products (r = 0.19; p < 0.01) and dentin bonding (r = 0.22; p < 0.001)., Conclusions: More recently graduating from dental school correlates with more positive evaluations of DH-related dental school education. The finding that most dentists engage in self-education about DH after dental school should motivate dental educators to increase education about this topic not only in dental school, but also in continuing education courses., (© 2023 The Authors. Objectives: The effectiveness of three different groups of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based gels containing powders on dentin hypersensitivity (DH) treatment were assessed and compared with Actimins® as commercial reference group., Methods: Hydroxyapatite nanorods (nHA) and sol-gel-derived 45S5 bioglass (SGD 45S5) powders were synthesized through hydrothermal and sol-gel methods, respectively. First, 25 demineralized dentin disks were divided into five groups. Then, the prepared gels based on 45S5 bioglass with and without hydrolyzed casein (HC) as experimental, nHA gel and Actimins® as positive and commercial reference groups were applied twice a day on disks by a micro applicator. To mimic the oral environment, treated disks were immersed in artificial saliva in a water bath at 37 °C for 7 days. However, in the negative control group, no agent was applied on the samples. FE-SEM, EDS, AFM, and XRD were performed to assess tubule occlusion. One-way ANOVA test was used for statistical analysis and p*<0.05 was set as the significance level., Results: The nHA with an average aspect ratio of 2.77 and the SGD 45S5 powders with a polygonal morphology and the average size of 48.64±11.38 µm were synthesized. After treatment, tubule occlusion in HC-SGD 45S5 and nHA gels were shown to be higher than other groups. The root mean square roughness (R rms ) of the above-mentioned gels showed to be 121.54±9.25 nm, and 312.6 ± 9 nm, respectively., Conclusion: The nHA containing group exhibited the highest tubule occlusion efficiency (i.e., tubule diameter of 0.92±0.32 µm) with a superior mineral precipitation. HC as a novel material demonstrates to be potentially beneficial in DH treatment., Clinical Significance: DH as a common issue may be reduced or eliminated by occlusion of patent dentinal tubules. There are various types of desensitizing agents capable of controlling the DH by the occlusion of patent dentinal tubules. Biomimetic strategies like peptide-guided collagen mineralization promise to enhance the effectiveness of dentin remineralization. We recently reported that rationally designed amelogenin-derived peptides P26 and P32 promoted apatite nucleation, mineralized collagen, and showed potential in enamel regrowth and dentin remineralization. To facilitate the clinical application of amelogenin-derived peptides and to uncover their effectiveness in repairing dentin, we have now implemented a chitosan (CS) hydrogel for peptide delivery and have investigated the effects of P26-CS and P32-CS hydrogels on dentin remineralization using 2 in situ experimental models that exhibited different levels of demineralization. The efficacy of the peptide-CS hydrogels in dentin repair was evaluated by characterizing the microstructure, mineral density, mineral phase, and nanomechanical properties of the remineralized samples. The new strategy of atomic force microscopy PeakForce quantitative nanomechanical mapping was used for direct visualization and nanomechanical analysis of repaired dentin lesions across the lesion depth. Results from the 2 models indicated the potential triple functions of peptide-CS hydrogels for dentin repair: building a highly organized protective mineralized layer on dentin, occluding dentinal tubules by peptide-guided in situ mineralization, and promoting biomimetic dentinal collagen remineralization. Importantly, peptides released from the CS hydrogel could diffuse into the dentinal matrix and penetrate the dentinal tubules, leading to both surface and subsurface remineralization and tubule occlusion. Background and Objectives: This prospective, comparative, double-cohort study aimed to compare the efficacy of silver diamine fluoride and potassium iodide (38% SDF+KI; Riva Star ® ) with sodium fluoride varnish (5% NaF; Duraphat ® ) in hypersensitive carious lesions in primary teeth to evaluate caries arrest and hypersensitivity relief. Materials and Methods : This study included thirty 2-5-year-olds (mean age = 3.67 ± 1.06 years; 16 males and 14 females) who required a desensitizing treatment for hypersensitive carious defects with visible dentin. A total of 15 of the participants were consecutively allocated to treatment with 5% NaF, and they were further compared to an equal number of participants treated with 38% SDF+KI solutions ( n = 15). The treatments were performed following clinical evaluation of caries activity using the International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS TM ) and the Bjørndal criteria (score of 0-9). Parental-reported hypersensitivity was evaluated using a visual analogue scale (0-10 = no to severe pain). Results : Clinical variables were evaluated at baseline and three months after treatment. Thereafter, a significant decline in hypersensitivity/pain led to lower final scores in the Riva Star ® group (0.40 ± 1.12, p = 0.002) than in the Duraphat ® group (1.40 ± 2.20, p = 0.004). The caries arrest effect was significantly higher in the Riva Star ® group (86.7%) compared to the Duraphat ® group three months after treatment (13.3%, p < 0.001). In both groups, there were no statistically significant differences in the children's behavior before, during, and after treatment. Conclusions : Ultimately, with both fluoride therapies reducing hypersensitivity/pain significantly, treatment with 38% SDF+KI was clearly more effective in caries arrest than 5% NaF varnish after a 3-month period.

Aim: To compare and evaluate the effectiveness of three commercially available desensitizing mouthwashes on dentinal tubule occlusion in vitro using a scanning electron microscope (SEM)., Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven premolar maxillary teeth were collected and cleaned to remove debris and tissue using an ultrasonic scaler. Enamel was removed with the help of a high-speed plain cut tungsten carbide fissure bur under continuous water spray. Dentinal discs measuring 5 mm × 5 mm × 3 mm were prepared from the coronal region of the extracted teeth using a double-sided carborundum disc and straight micromotor handpiece. Using carborundum paper, the discs were polished and washed with distilled water. The discs were etched using 37% phosphoric acid to remove any smear layer that was caused by the grinding process and to simulate dentinal hypersensitivity by opening the dentinal tubules. The specimens were again washed and stored in distilled water until use. Samples were then randomly allocated into Group A: calcium sodium phosphosilicate mouthwash, Group B: potassium nitrate mouthwash, and Group C: dipotassium oxalate monohydrate mouthwash. The specimens were immersed in a test tube filled with the respective mouthwash and vigorously shaken for 60 s for simulating the natural mouth rinsing action. This procedure was repeated for 7 days, twice daily. To compare and assess the proportion of dentinal tubule occlusion, all the samples were processed and examined under an SEM., Results: The efficacy of the mouthwash on the obliteration of dentinal tubules was compared using the Kruskal-Walis analysis of variance test followed by the post hoc Mann-Whitney U test for pairwise comparison. Group A showed completely occluded tubules in 5 (55.6) and mostly occluded tubules in 4 (44.4). Group B showed mostly occluded in 4 samples (44.4) and partially occluded in 5 samples (55.6) and Group C showed completely occluded tubules in 3 samples (33.3) and mostly occluded tubules in 6 samples (66.7). A P value of 0.05 or less is regarded as statistically significant. * P ≤ 0.05 is statistically significant. Between Group A and Group B as well as between Group B and Group C, there was a statistically significant difference. Introduction Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are structural deformities or tissue loss in the cervical region of teeth, which are closer to the gum line that do not result from caries (tooth decay). On the tooth enamel at the gingival margin, these lesions are frequently seen as V- or U-shaped notches. The causes of NCCLs are multifaceted and involve intricate relationships between chemical, mechanical, and biological elements. The slow loss of enamel and dentin in the cervical area occurs due to mechanical causes like abrasive toothbrushing and occlusal tension, as well as chemical variables such as erosive acidic food components. As NCCLs advance, dental discomfort, aesthetic issues, and impaired tooth function may result. The aim of this study was to assess the nanoscale configuration of dentin in non-carious cervical lesions using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Methodology Sterilized teeth samples were selected from the extracted tooth repository of Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai. Tooth samples were thinly sliced using a diamond bur. The sliced teeth were examined using a scanning electron microscope. Ionic configuration was assessed using EDS and elemental analysis. Results The findings showed the nanoscale morphology and elemental configurations present. Elemental mapping showed specific elemental localization in the affected area. Conclusion NCCLs can be attributed as a predominant factor leading to gingival recession causing dentin exposure and hypersensitivity. Objective To assess the effects of different application sequences of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet(Nd∶YAG)laser and the desensitizing toothpaste containing stannous fluoride on dentinal tubule occlusion.Methods Twelve intact third molars freshly extracted from human were selected and prepared into dentin slices with a thickness of 0.8 mm.Each dentin slice was subdivided into four small slices,three of which were etched with 6% citric acid and randomly assigned to the following three groups( n =12):(1)control group:no treatment;(2)Nd∶YAG+toothbrushing(TB)group:first irradiated with Nd∶YAG laser and then brushed with desensitizing toothpaste;(3)TB+Nd∶YAG group:first brushed with desensitizing toothpaste and then irradiated with Nd∶YAG laser.The Nd∶YAG laser irradiation were carried out at 1 W,15 pulses/s,and the pulse width of 150 μs for 10 s(for a total of 6 cycles).After the above treatment,the 12 dentin slices from the Nd∶YAG+TB and TB+Nd∶YAG groups were randomly assigned to four subgroups( n =3)and subjected to acid etching in the Coca-Cola solution for 0,5,10,and 15 min.A scanning electron microscope was used to observe and photograph the dentin slices in each group,and eight single-blinded examiners scored the slices according to uniform criteria.The analysis of variance was carried out to compared the scores between groups.Results Before acid etching,the dentin tubule occlusion scores of the Nd∶YAG+TB and TB+Nd∶YAG groups were(4.83±0.09) scores and(3.85±0.66) scores,respectively,which had no significant difference between each other( P =0.0590)and were higher than that[(0.10±0.07)scores]of the control group(both P <0.0001).The dentin tubule occlusion scores of the Nd∶YAG+TB group after acid etching for 5,10,and 15 min were(4.33±0.60)scores,(4.27±0.24)scores,and(3.63±0.07)scores,respectively,which were not significantly different from those[(4.04±0.10)scores,(3.76±0.59)scores,and(3.17±0.29)scores,respectively]of the TB+Nd∶YAG group(all P >0.05).In the Nd∶YAG+TB subgroup,the dentin tubule occlusion score after acid etching for 15 min was significantly lower than that before acid etching( P =0.0011).In the TB+Nd∶YAG group,there was no statistically significant difference in the score between before and after acid etching( P >0.05).Conclusions Nd∶YAG laser irradiation with appropriate parameters combined with the use of desensitizing toothpaste could produce an excellent occluding effect on dentinal tubules regardless of the sequence.However,brushing with desensitizing toothpaste followed by Nd∶YAG laser irradiation produced more consistent dentin sealing after acid etching.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common symptom of various dental diseases that usually produces abnormal pain with external stimuli. Various desensitizers are developed to treat DH by occluding dentine tubules (DTs) or blocking intersynaptic connections of dental sensory nerve cells. However, the main limitations of currently available techniques are the chronic toxic effects of chemically active ingredients and their insufficiently durable efficacy. Herein, a novel DH therapy with remarkable biosafety and durable therapeutic value based on β-chitooligosaccharide graft derivative (CAD) is presented. Particularly, CAD indicates the most energetic results, restoring the amino polysaccharide protective membrane in DTs, significantly promoting calcium and phosphorus ion deposition and bone anabolism, and regulating the levels of immunoglobulin in saliva and cellular inflammatory factors in plasma. Exposed DTs are occluded by remineralized hydroxyapatite with a depth of over 70 µm, as shown in in vitro tests. The bone mineral density of Sprague-Dawley rats' molar dentin increases by 10.96%, and the trabecular thickness of bone improves to about 0.03 µm in 2 weeks in the CAD group compared to the blank group. Purpose: This study evaluates the effects of a novel nanohydroxyapatite gel and Er: YAG laser on the surface roughness, surface morphology, and elemental content after dentin hypersensitivity treatments., Methods: Dentin discs (2 × 3 × 3 mm 3 ) were prepared from 75 human molars. Out of 75 human molars, 50 were used to evaluate surface roughness and randomly divided into five groups: Group ID (intact dentin), Group DD (demineralized dentin), Group BF (fluoride varnish/Bifluorid 10), Group Lsr (Er: YAG laser-50 mJ, 0.50 W, 10 Hz), and Group NHA (nanohydroxyapatite-containing gel). Dentin hypersensitivity was stimulated by 35% phosphoric acid for 1 min (except Group ID). The surface roughness (Ra, μm) was measured via contact profilometry (n = 10). Out of the 75 sound human molars, 25 were used to evaluate the surface morphology and elemental content using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (n = 5). The data were statistically analyzed using Welsch ANOVA, Games-Howell, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn tests ( p < 0.05)., Results: Group Lsr showed significantly lower surface roughness than Group NHA and Group BF ( p < 0.05). The SEM analysis indicated that most of the dentinal tubules were obliterated for Group NHA. Precipitant plugs with partially occluded dentinal tubules were observed for Group BF, while partially or completely occluded tubules with a melting appearance were detected for Group Lsr. The EDS analysis revealed that Group NHA and Group Lsr presented similar calcium and phosphorus amounts to Group ID. All dentin hypersensitivity treatment methods could provide promising results in terms of tubular occlusion efficiency. There are two main methods used for dentin hypersensitivity (DH) treatment: dentinal tubule occlusion and blockage of nerve activity. Dentifrices are the most common vehicles for active ingredients used for DH treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of three toothpastes on dentinal tubule occlusion, mineral acquisition, and dentin hardness. Forty human dentin disks were submerged in 40% citric acid for 30 s and then exposed to tooth brushing for 2 min twice a day for 14 days using three toothpastes: Dontodent Sensitive (group 1), Dr. Wolff's Biorepair (group 2), and Sensodyne Repair and Protect (group 3). In the control group (group 4), the samples were brushed with water. All of the samples were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Vickers dentin hardness determination. On SEM images, the degree of dentinal tubule occlusion was assessed using a five-grade scale. The mean score values in groups 1-4 were 3.60 ± 0.69, 2.20 ± 0.91, 2.30 ± 1.16, and 5.00 ± 0.00, significantly higher in study groups when compared to the control group (Kruskal Wallis test p < 0.05). EDX evaluation showed significantly higher calcium and phosphorus concentrations in groups 1 and 3 when compared to control group d. The mean values of Vickers dentin hardness numbers in groups 1-4 were 243.03 ± 10.014, 327.38 ± 56.65, 260.29 ± 37.69, and 225.83 ± 29.93, respectively. No statistically significant results were obtained when comparing the hardness mean values in groups (Kruskal-Wallis statistical test, p = 0.372 > 0.05). All three toothpastes tested demonstrated significant occlusion of dentinal tubules. Dontodent Sensitive and Sensodyne Repair and Protect toothpastes enhanced the calcium and phosphorus content of the dentin surface. None of the toothpastes increased dentin hardness as a result of mineral acquisition.

The aim of this laboratory study was to investigate and compare the impact of five desensitizing techniques as a treatment fortooth sensitivity on the exposed dentin after an in-office tooth bleaching procedure. Thirty intact human molars were collected for this investigation. The specimens were obtained by transversely cutting 2.5 mm of the crowns, leading to exposure of the dentin. The specimens were cleaned in an ultrasonic bath and treated initially with EDTA gel 15% for 4 min and then with Opalescence Boost bleaching gel (40% H 2 O 2 ) for two sets of 20 min. Then, the samples were randomly divided into six groups ( n = 5) and received one of the following treatments: Group 1 (no treatment-control group), Group 2 (Emofluor gel-0.4% SnF 2 ), Group 3 (MI Paste-CPP-ACPF), Group 4 (BioMinF paste-calcium phospho-fluoro-silicate), Group 5 (air-abrasion with ProSylc-Bioglass 45S5), and Group 6 (Er,Cr:YSGG laser). Subsequently, each sample was observed utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to detect the rate of occlusion of dentin tubules. SEM-EDS analysis revealed no occlusion of the dentin tubules in the control group, while Groups 2, 4, and 5 presented high effectiveness (>95% percentage of occluded tubules), and Groups 3 and 6 presented lower values (21.6 and 26.8%, respectively). It was concluded that althoughall the tested groups presented higher percentages of occlusion of the dentinal tubules compared to the control group, there were differences in effectiveness among them. The most effective treatments were the daily use of BioMinF paste and SnF 2 -containing gel, as well as air-abrasion with ProSylc powder.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the 980-nm diode laser for dentinal tubule occlusion, measure the intrapulpal temperature, and investigate the dental pulp response., Materials and Methods: The dentinal samples were randomly divided into G1-G7 groups: control; 980-nm laser irradiation (0.5 W, 10 s; 0.5 W, 10 s × 2; 0.8 W, 10 s; 0.8 W, 10 s × 2; 1.0 W, 10 s; 1.0 W, 10 s × 2). The dentin discs were applied for laser irradiation and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The intrapulpal temperature was measured on the 1.0-mm and 2.0-mm thickness samples, and then divided into G2-G7 groups according to laser irradiation. Moreover, forty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into the laser-irradiated group (euthanized at 1, 7, and 14 days after irradiation) and the control group (non-irradiated). qRT-PCR, histomorphology, and immunohistochemistry analysis were employed to evaluate the response of dental pulp., Results: SEM indicated the occluding ratio of dentinal tubules in the G5 (0.8 W, 10 s × 2) and G7 (1.0 W, 10 s × 2) were significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.05). The maximum intrapulpal temperature rises in the G5 were lower than the standard line (5.5 ℃). qRT-PCR showed that the mRNA expression level of TNF-α and HSP-70 upregulated significantly at 1 day (p < 0.05). Histomorphology and immunohistochemistry analysis showed that, compared with the control group, the inflammatory reaction was slightly higher at the 1 and 7 days (p < 0.05) and decreased to the normal levels at 14 days (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: A 980-nm laser at a power of 0.8 W with 10 s × 2 defines the best treatment for dentin hypersensitivity in terms of compromise between the efficacy of the treatment and the safety of the pulp., Clinical Relevance: The 980-nm laser is an effective option for treating dentin sensitivity. The aim of this systematic review is to compare home and office desensitizers containing bioactive glass with control groups in randomized controlled trials (RCT) conducted between 2018 and 2022. According to PRISMA guidelines, three electronic databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Library) were searched for published scientific articles in October 2022. RCT with adult participants with dentin hypersensitivity (DH) diagnosed by evaporative, mechanical, or thermal stimulation, with a follow-up period and quantified pain assessment were included in the study. Studies that reported DH due to tooth restoration, crown preparation, bleaching, or periodontal surgery or used bioactive glass-ceramics were excluded. The quality of the studies was assessed using version 2 of the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool for randomized studies (RoB 2 tool). Articles that were duplicative or unrelated to this study were excluded. Nine articles were selected for full-text evaluation, whereas two articles were rejected. The remaining seven reports were included in this review. The calcium sodium phosphosilicate group (CSPS) was not significantly different from the positive control groups. Compared with the control groups, fluoro calcium phosphosilicate (FCPS) may be the most effective long-term treatment option. In terms of DH symptom reduction, the FCPS group performed better than the CSPS group. CSPS at a concentration of 5-15% and FCPS at a concentration of 5% are effective in treating DH in adult participants.

Objective: The current study was carried out to evaluate the effects of laser and Systemp.desensitizer therapy. Further, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the effects of individual or combined desensitizers on human dentinal tubules. Background: The most common clinical condition that makes people uncomfortable is dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Both lasers and drugs that reduce sensitivity have been used to treat DH. Materials and methods: A total of 100 dentinal samples were taken from newly extracted third molars (affected) and divided into 10 groups (A to J), that is, control (A); Systemp.desensitizer (B); diode laser (980 nm) (C); Nd:YAG laser (D); Er:YAG laser (E); Er,Cr:YSGG laser (F); Systemp.desensitizer + diode laser (G); Systemp.desensitizer + Nd:YAG laser (H); Systemp.desensitizer + Er:YAG laser (I); and Systemp.desensitizer + Er,Cr:YSGG laser (J). SEM was used to evaluate the dentinal specimens in each group (longitudinal and transverse portions), and then images of each sample were captured (20 images/sample). In addition, the number of open dentinal tubules was counted and then the occlusion depth in dentinal tubules was measured. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were employed to analyze the obtained data. Results: All treatment procedures and protocols were effective in blocking dentinal tubules ( p  < 0.05). Compared with the other groups, dentinal tubules in the laser and laser combination therapy groups were significantly obstructed ( p  < 0.05). Diode and Nd:YAG lasers with or without Systemp.desensitizer showed significantly more tubule occlusion and greater sealing depth than Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers with or without Systemp.desensitizer ( p  < 0.05). Conclusions: In summary, lasers alone or in combination can play a significant role in occluding the dentinal tubules. However, combining the diode or Nd:YAG laser with Systemp.desensitizers is a more effective treatment strategy and may have immediate and long-lasting effects.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is triggered by external stimuli irking fluid flow through exposed dentinal tubules (DTs). Three commercially available desensitizing agents as control in this study only achieve limited occlusion depths of ≈10 µm in the DTs as well as scarce remineralization of demineralized dentin matrix. Herein, polyelectrolyte-calcium complexes pre-precursor (PCCP) process is proposed for managing DH that demineralized dentin with exposed DTs is rubbed with ultrahighly concentrated polyelectrolyte-calcium suspension (4 g L -1 -5.44 m) followed by phosphate solution (3.25 m), each 10 min, leading to heavy remineralization of demineralized dentin and compact occlusion of the DTs over 200 µm after 1 day of in vitro and in vivo incubation. For the first time, it is demonstrated that the PCCP process relies on the pH-dependent electrostatic attraction between electropositive polyelectrolyte-calcium complexes and electronegative inwalls of DTs comprised of collagen fibrils and hydroxyapatite crystals under alkaline condition. Context: Over the years, numerous treatment modalities have been researched for the management of dentinal hypersensitivity. A recent remineralizing agent containing a phase of amorphous calcium phosphate combined with fluoride has shown the ability to rapidly convert into biomimetic hydroxyapatite. This potential can be utilized in occluding the dentinal tubules for the treatment of hypersensitivity., Aims: The present study aims to compare the effectiveness of biomimetic hydroxyapatite-based tooth mousse and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) tooth mousse as desensitizing agents on dentinal tubule occlusion., Materials and Methods: The in vitro study design involved 30 prepared dentin specimens that were divided into three groups: Group A: negative control, Group B: CPP-ACP tooth mousse (GC tooth mousse ™ ), and Group C: fluoride-doped amorphous calcium phosphate (F-ACP) tooth mousse (Curasept Biosmalto Denti Sensibili Tooth Mousse). The specimens were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an attached energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy apparatus after 1 week., Statistical Analysis: The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and post hoc Mann-Whitney test for intragroup and intergroup analysis, respectively., Results: The SEM analysis of the F-ACP group showed statistically greater percentage of tubule occlusion (40.21%) compared to the CPP-ACP group (38.15%). EDX analysis of both F-ACP and CPP-ACP groups revealed calcium, phosphorus, carbon, oxygen, and silica with an additional fluoride element in the F-ACP group., Conclusions: In the present study, both remineralizing agents were able to occlude the dentinal tubules. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of root coverage surgery in reducing dentin hypersensitivity (DH) through a systematic review and meta-analysis., Data Sources: Unrestricted search of four indexed databases up to September 2022 was performed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of root coverage surgery on DH frequency and/or intensity presurgically (baseline) and at least 3 months postsurgically. Two authors independently conducted study screening and data extraction. Subgroup meta-analyses were performed separately for stimulated and unstimulated DH frequency and intensity at different timepoints. The risk of bias and quality of the available evidence were assessed., Results: Nineteen RCTs presenting data from 7 days to 30 months after root coverage surgery with various treatment modalities were included from the 662 identified studies. A total of 486 patients contributed 784 recession defects. Results from the subgroup meta-analyses showed that, overall, root coverage surgery reduced the risk for DH by 67% (RR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.21 to 0.53) and 53% (RR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.38 to 0.58) upon unstimulated and stimulated DH assessment, respectively. The DH intensity was also significantly reduced (mean visual analog score difference, 2.37; 95% CI, 2.02 to 2.71) upon stimulated DH assessment. No significant changes in DH intensity were observed upon unstimulated DH assessment. The included studies did not have high risk of bias and the quality of evidence was low to high., Conclusion: Existing evidence suggests that root coverage surgery may effectively reduce the DH frequency and intensity.

Background: Propolis is a natural resinous substance collected by honeybees, chiefly from buds and the leaves, branches, and bark of trees. Its role as a wound-healing gel has been studied, but the use of a propolis hydrogel in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity has not been evaluated. Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is commonly treated via iontophoresis using fluoridated desensitizers. The aim of the present study was to compare and evaluate the effects of a 10% propolis hydrogel, 2% sodium fluoride (NaF), and 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) when used in conjunction with iontophoresis for the treatment of cervical dentin hypersensitivity (DH)., Methods: Systemically healthy patients complaining of DH were selected for this single-centre, parallel, double-blind randomized clinical trial. Three substances were selected as desensitizers for study in the present trial: a 10% propolis hydrogel, 2% sodium fluoride, and 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride, all in conjunction with iontophoresis. Any decrease in DH following the application of specific stimuli was assessed at baseline, before and after application, on the 14th day following use, and on the 28th day following the intervention., Results: Intra-group comparisons show diminished values of DH at maximum post-op follow-up intervals which were significantly trimmed down from the baseline ( p < 0.05). The 2% NaF demonstrated a significant reduction in DH over 1.23% APF and the 10% propolis hydrogel ( p < 0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean difference between the APF and propolis hydrogel groups assessed via tactile, cold, and air tests ( p > 0.05)., Conclusion: All three desensitizers have proved to be useful when used in conjugation with iontophoresis. Within the limitations of this study, a 10% propolis hydrogel can be used as a naturally occurring alternative to commercially available fluoridated desensitizers.

Aim: This study aimed to: (i) calculate personal financial costs associated with urgent dental attendance; and (ii) investigate the pain-related disability and quality of life impact of dental conditions which result in urgent dental attendance., Methodology: Data were collected from those presenting with urgent dental conditions to an out-of-hours dental service, a dental emergency clinic (DEC) and five primary care general dental practices across North-East England. A pre-operative questionnaire explored the impact of urgent dental conditions on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) using Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and a modified Graded Chronic Pain Scale (GCPS). OHIP-14 yields a maximum score of 56, with a higher score indicating a lower OHRQoL. Personal financial costs were summed to provide a total. These included travel, appointment fees, childcare costs, medication use and time away from work. Data were analysed using one-way anova and multivariable modelling., Results: In total, 714 participants were recruited. The mean OHIP-14 score was 25.73; 95% CI [24.67, 26.79], GCPS CPI was 71.69; 95% CI [70.09, 73.28] and GCPS interference was 49.56; 95% CI [47.24, 51.87]. Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis was the most frequently managed dental emergency and was associated with the highest mean OHIP-14 score (31.67; 95% CI [30.20, 33.15]). The mean personal financial cost of urgent dental care (UDC) was £85.81; 95% CI [73.29, 98.33]. Differences in travel time (F[2, 691] = 10.24, p < .001), transport costs (F[2, 698] = 4.92, p = .004), and appointment time (F[2, 74] = 9.40, p < .001) were significant between patients attending an out-of-hours dental service, DEC and dental practices for emergency care, with a DEC being associated with the highest costs and dental practices the lowest., Conclusions: Diseases of the pulp and associated periapical disease were the most common reason for patients to present for UDC and were the most impactful in terms of OHRQoL and pain in the present sample. Personal financial costs are significant from urgent dental conditions, with centralized services increasing the burden to patients of attending appointments., (© 2023 The Authors. Statement of the Problem: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common irritating condition. A precise sensitive test for its assessment can greatly aid in appropriate treatment planning., Purpose: This meta-analysis aims to compare the air blast and tactile tests for assessment of the efficacy Nd:YAG laser therapy versus non-laser treatments for DH in short-term and long-term follow-ups., Materials and Method: For this review, an electronic search of the literature was carried out in three databases by two researchers for English articles published until March 10, 2021. Pooling of the data extracted from the selected articles was performed according to the PRISMA statement by the random-effect model. The mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of pain score before the treatment onset and during the follow-up period according to the visual analog scale (VAS) were calculated. The level of heterogeneity was assessed by the I 2 test, and a funnel plot was drawn to assess the publication bias of the reviewed studies., Results: Of 152 articles primarily retrieved, 9 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) using the air blast test and 4 RCTs using the tactile test were subjected to quantitative synthesis. In the short-term follow-up and immediately after treatment, the air blast test showed superiority of laser therapy compared with non-laser treatments (SMD: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.05-1.04, p = 0.03). However, this difference was not significant according to the tactile test (SMD: 0.48. 95% CI: 0.01-0.96, p = 0.06). In the long-term follow-up, the difference between laser therapy and non-laser modalities was not significant according to both air blast (SMD= -0.38, 95% CI: -1.43-0.67, p = 0.48) and tactile (SMD=0.0, 95% CI: -0.38-0.38, p = 0.99) tests., Conclusion: Comparison of laser therapy and non-laser modalities in the short-term reveal-ed higher sensitivity of the air blast test due to its mechanism of action compared with the tactile test. Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) pain is a persistent clinical problem, which is a common condition known to affect patients' quality of life (QoL), but no treatment has ever been agreed upon. Calcium phosphates, available in different forms, have properties that allow sealing the dentinal tubules, which may relieve dentin hypersensitivity. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the ability of different formulations of calcium phosphate to reduce dentin hypersensitivity pain level in clinical studies. The inclusion criterion was as follows: clinical randomized controlled studies using calcium phosphates in treating dentin hypersensitivity. In December 2022, three electronic databases (Pubmed, Cochrane and Embase) were searched. The search strategy was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The bias assessment risks results were carried out using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. A total of 20 articles were included and analyzed in this systematic review. The results show that calcium phosphates have properties that reduce DH-associated pain. Data compilation showed a statistically significant difference in DH pain level between T0 and 4 weeks. This VAS level reduction is estimated at about -2.5 compared to the initial level. The biomimetic and non-toxic characteristics of these materials make them a major asset in treating dentin hypersensitivity.
