Objective: Electrode array design may impact hearing outcomes in patients who receive cochlear implants. The goal of this work was to assess differences in post operative speech perception among patients who received cochlear implants of differing designs and lengths., Study Design: Retrospective chart review., Setting: Tertiary Care Hospital., Methods: Patients (n = 129) received 1 of 9 electrode arrays, which were categorized by design: Lateral wall electrodes (n = 36) included CI522, CI622 (Cochlear Americas), Flex24, and Flex28 (Med El). Midscala electrodes (n = 16) included HiRes Ultra 3D (Advanced Bionics). Perimodiolar electrodes (n = 77) included CI512, CI532, CI612, and CI632 (Cochlear Americas). Speech perception was evaluated using consonant-nucleus-consonant (CNC) tests and at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postimplantation., Results: Perimodiolar electrodes showed significantly higher CNC scores compared to lateral wall electrodes at 6 and 24 months. Perimodiolar electrodes also outperformed midscala electrodes at 12 months. An inverse relationship was observed between electrode length and CNC scores noted at 6, 12, and 24 months., Conclusion: Perimodiolar electrode arrays, which tend to be shorter, demonstrated better speech perception outcomes compared to the longer lateral wall and midscala arrays at some timepoints. The efficiency of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cells that use transparent conductive oxide (TCO) as the top electrode decreases significantly as the device area increases owing to the poor electrical properties of TCO. Therefore, high-efficiency, large-area CIGS solar cells require the development of a novel top electrode with high transmittance and conductivity. In this study, a microgrid/TCO hybrid electrode is designed to minimize the optical and resistive losses that may occur in the top electrode of a CIGS solar cell. In addition, the buffer layer of the CIGS solar cells is changed from the conventional CdS buffer to a dry-processed wide-band gap ZnMgO (ZMO) buffer, resulting in increased device efficiency by minimizing parasitic absorption in the short-wavelength region. By optimizing the combination of ZMO buffer and the microgrid/TCO hybrid electrode, a device efficiency of up to 20.5% (with antireflection layers) is achieved over a small device area of 5 mm × 5 mm (total area). Moreover, CIGS solar cells with an increased device area of up to 20 mm × 70 mm (total area) exhibit an efficiency of up to 19.7% (with antireflection layers) when a microgrid/TCO hybrid electrode is applied. Thus, this study demonstrates the potential for high-efficiency, large-area CIGS solar cells with novel microgrid electrodes.

Li-ion battery degradation and safety events are often attributed to undesirable metallic lithium plating. Since their release, Li-ion battery electrodes have been made progressively thicker to provide a higher energy density. However, the propensity for plating in these thicker pairings is not well understood. Herein, we combine an experimental plating-prone condition with robust mesoscale modeling to examine electrode pairings with capacities ranging from 2.5 to 6 mAh/cm 2 and negative to positive (N/P) electrode areal capacity ratio from 0.9 to 1.8 without the need for extensive aging tests. Using both experimentation and a mesoscale model, we identify a shift from conventional high state-of-charge (SOC) type plating to high overpotential (OP) type plating as electrode thickness increases. These two plating modes have distinct morphologies, identified by optical microscopy and electrochemical signatures. We demonstrate that under operating conditions where these plating modes converge, a high propensity of plating exists, revealing the importance of predicting and avoiding this overlap for a given electrode pairing. Further, we identify that thicker electrodes, beyond a capacity of 3 mAh/cm 2 or thickness >75 μm, are prone to high OP, limiting negative electrode (NE) utilization and preventing cross-sectional oversizing the NE from mitigating plating. Here, it simply contributes to added mass and volume. The experimental thermal gradient and mesoscale model either combined or independently provide techniques capable of probing performance and safety implications of mild changes to electrode design features.

Cochlear implants are crucial for addressing severe-to-profound hearing loss, with the success of the procedure requiring careful electrode placement. This scoping review synthesizes the findings from 125 studies examining the factors influencing insertion forces (IFs) and intracochlear pressure (IP), which are crucial for optimizing implantation techniques and enhancing patient outcomes. The review highlights the impact of variables, including insertion depth, speed, and the use of robotic assistance on IFs and IP. Results indicate that higher insertion speeds generally increase IFs and IP in artificial models, a pattern not consistently observed in cadaveric studies due to variations in methodology and sample size. The study also explores the observed minimal impact of robotic assistance on reducing IFs compared to manual methods. Importantly, this review underscores the need for a standardized approach in cochlear implant research to address inconsistencies and improve clinical practices aimed at preserving hearing during implantation.

Introduction: For decades, radiofrequency (RF)-induced tissue fusion has garnered great attention due to its potential to replace sutures and staples for anastomosis of tissue reconstruction. However, the complexities of achieving high bonding strength and reducing excessive thermal damage present substantial limitations of existing fusion devices., Materials and Methods: This study proposed a discrete linkage-type electrode to carry out ex vivo RF-induced intestinal anastomosis experiments. The anastomotic strength was examined by burst pressure and shear strength test. The degree of thermal damage was monitored through an infrared thermal imager. And the anastomotic stoma fused by the electrode was further investigated through histopathological and ultrastructural observation., Results: The burst pressure and shear strength of anastomotic tissue can reach 62.2 ± 3.08 mmHg and 8.73 ± 1.11N, respectively, when the pressure, power and duration are 995 kPa, 160 W and 13 s, and the thermal damage can be controlled within limits. Histopathological and ultrastructural observation indicate that an intact and fully fused stomas with collagenic crosslink can be formed., Conclusion: The discrete linkage-type electrode presents favorable efficiency and security in RF-induced tissue fusion, and these results are informative to the design of electrosurgical medical devices with controllable pressure and energy delivery.

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) is a promising method for sustainable ammonia production. Although the majority of studies on the eNRR are devoted to developing efficient electrocatalysts, it is critical to study the influence of mass transfer because of the poor N 2 transfer efficiency. Herein, a novel bubble-based microreactor (BBMR) is proposed that efficiently promotes the mass transfer behavior during the eNRR using microfluidic strategies. The BBMR possesses abundant triphasic interfaces and provides spatial confinement and accurate potential control, ensuring rapid mass transfer dynamics and improved eNRR performance, as confirmed by experimental and simulation studies. The ammonia yield of the reaction over Ag nanoparticles can be enhanced to 31.35 µg h -1  mg cat. , which is twice that of the H-cell. Excellent improvements are also achieved using Ru/C and Fe/g-CN catalysts, with 5.0 and 8.5 times increase in ammonia yield, respectively. This work further demonstrates the significant effect of mass transfer on the eNRR performance and provides an effective strategy for process enhancement through electrode design.-1 , which is twice that of the H-cell. Excellent improvements are also achieved using Ru/C and Fe/g-CN catalysts, with 5.0 and 8.5 times increase in ammonia yield, respectively. Adopting a nano- and micro-structuring approach to fully unleashing the genuine potential of electrode active material benefits in-depth understandings and research progress toward higher energy density electrochemical energy storage devices at all technology readiness levels. Due to various challenging issues, especially limited stability, nano- and micro-structured (NMS) electrodes undergo fast electrochemical performance degradation. The emerging NMS scaffold design is a pivotal aspect of many electrodes as it endows them with both robustness and electrochemical performance enhancement, even though it only occupies complementary and facilitating components for the main mechanism. However, extensive efforts are urgently needed toward optimizing the stereoscopic geometrical design of NMS scaffolds to minimize the volume ratio and maximize their functionality to fulfill the ever-increasing dependency and desire for energy power source supplies. This review will aim at highlighting these NMS scaffold design strategies, summarizing their corresponding strengths and challenges, and thereby outlining the potential solutions to resolve these challenges, design principles, and key perspectives for future research in this field. This study presents a novel approach to developing high-performance lithium-ion battery electrodes by loading titania-carbon hybrid spherogels with sulfur. The resulting hybrid materials combine high charge storage capacity, electrical conductivity, and core-shell morphology, enabling the development of next-generation battery electrodes. We obtained homogeneous carbon spheres caging crystalline titania particles and sulfur using a template-assisted sol-gel route and carefully treated the titania-loaded carbon spherogels with hydrogen sulfide. The carbon shells maintain their microporous hollow sphere morphology, allowing for efficient sulfur deposition while protecting the titania crystals. By adjusting the sulfur impregnation of the carbon sphere and varying the titania loading, we achieved excellent lithium storage properties by successfully cycling encapsulated sulfur in the sphere while benefiting from the lithiation of titania particles. Without adding a conductive component, the optimized material provided after 150 cycles at a specific current of 250 mA g -1 a specific capacity of 825 mAh g -1 with a Coulombic efficiency of 98%.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) offer a dual solution of generating electrical energy from organic pollutants-laden wastewater while treating it. This study focuses on enhancing MFC performance through innovative electrode design. Three-dimensional (3D) anodes, created from corncobs and mango seeds via controlled graphitization, achieved remarkable power densities. The newly developed electrode configurations were evaluated within sewage wastewater-driven MFCs without the introduction of external microorganisms or prior treatment of the wastewater. At 1,000°C and 1,100°C graphitization temperatures, corncob and mango seed anodes produced 1,963 and 2,171 mW/m 2 , respectively, nearly 20 times higher than conventional carbon cloth and paper anodes. An advanced cathode composed of an activated carbon-carbon nanotube composite was introduced, rivaling expensive platinum-based cathodes. By optimizing the thermal treatment temperature and carbon nanotube content of the proposed cathode, comparable or superior performance to standard Pt/C commercial cathodes was achieved. Specifically, MFCs assembled with corncob anode with the proposed and standard Pt/C cathodes reached power densities of 1,963.1 and 2,178.6 mW/m 2 , respectively. Similarly, when utilizing graphitized mango seeds at 1,100°C, power densities of 2,171 and 2,151 mW/m 2 were achieved for the new and standard cathodes, respectively. Furthermore, in continuous operation with a flow rate of 2 L/h, impressive chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates of 77% and 85% were achieved with corncob and mango seed anodes, respectively. Context: This work theoretically demonstrates a catalyst of copper monatomic wire supported on graphene nanoribbons (Cu-GNR) with a high efficiency for nitric oxide electroreduction reaction (NORR). This not only decreases the usage rate of noble metals but also possesses superior limiting potential comparable to pure Cu (- 0.69 and - 0.61 V, vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). The key is that Cu-GNR will have more efficient catalytic activity for NORR when fully covered by NO, since these weaken the adsorption ability of the reduction steps at the beginning. Background: Non-ablative radiofrequency (RF) has been widely used in clinical and at-home cosmetics devices. RF electrode geometry can influence the heat distribution in the tissue. This study analyzes the influence of geometric parameters of the electrode on the heat distribution in the layered tissue., Materials & Methods: The finite element simulation of the electrothermal coupling field was performed to obtain the three-dimensional (3D) temperature distribution of the four-layer tissue. The electrode geometric parameters including the inter-electrode spacing (5-12 mm), width (1-3 mm), length (3-10 mm), shapes (bar, dot and circle), and the coupling gel's electrical conductivity (0.2-1.5 S/m) were simulated. The maximum temperature at 2 mm depth (T -2 mm ) and the temperature difference (T diff ) between the maximum skin surface temperature and T -2 mm were obtained to evaluate the effectiveness and safety., Results: The effect of geometric parameters on the effectiveness and safety was mixed. The maximum T -2 mm occurred with the 5 mm inter-electrode spacing, 3 mm width, 10 mm length, the circle-shaped electrode, and the 1.5 S/m coupling gel's electrical conductivity. The ratio of inter-electrode spacing to width at around four can achieve rapid temperature rise and skin surface temperature protection. The electrode shape influenced the area of temperature rise in the tissue's cross-section. The coupling gel's electrical conductivity should be close to that of the skin to avoid energy accumulation on the skin surface., Conclusion: The electrode's geometric parameters affect the effectiveness and safety of the RF product. CO 2 reduction, two-electron O 2 reduction, and N 2 reduction are sustainable technologies to valorise common molecules. Their further development requires working electrode design to promote the multistep electrochemical processes from gas reactants to value-added products at the device level. This review proposes critical features of a desirable electrode based on the fundamental electrochemical processes and the development of scalable devices. A detailed discussion is made to approach such a desirable electrode, addressing the recent progress on critical electrode components, assembly strategies, and reaction interface engineering. Further, we highlight the electrode design tailored to reaction properties (e.g., its thermodynamics and kinetics) for performance optimisation. Finally, the opportunities and remaining challenges are presented, providing a framework for rational electrode design to push these gas reduction reactions towards an improved technology readiness level (TRL)., (© 2023 The Authors. In this paper, we report the simulation and fabrication of thickness-shear mode langasite resonators with stepped elliptical electrode designs to investigate their effects on energy trapping and suppression of spurious modes at elevated temperatures. Finite element analysis was conducted to analyze the design of a stepped elliptical electrode on a contoured langasite crystal. Based on the simulation findings, langasite resonators with stepped electrodes were fabricated, and their displacement profiles and frequency-temperature properties were characterized using network analysis and laser Doppler vibrometry. Detection sensitivity is a crucial factor in the application of ECIS sensors. For these biosensors, the electrode configuration has a direct impact on sensitivity, yet few studies on monopolar electrodes have been reported. In this study, ECIS sensor arrays, which have a series of working electrode configuration with a wide diameter range and different electrode number, were fabricated to monitor living osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells. The experimental results revealed that when the electrode diameter was larger than 25 μm, electrodes with smaller diameter and number yielded higher impedance values and generated more impedance shift to cell status change. The membrane capacitance obtained by equivalent circuit fitting was at the same level. When the electrode diameter was even smaller, the results in detection of cell monolayer were opposite, and there was no distinct relationship between impedance and membrane capacitance shift to cell status change and electrode geometry. The proposed sensor chip, allowing for a sustained and stable detection of cellular impedance, provides the basis for the selection of the electrode configuration of monopolar electrodes. The test results of electrodes with a diameter of 25 μm and lower indicated the possibility of single cell impedance measurement, which can provide unique insight into the heterogeneous electrical behavior of cells, and, in this case, the electrode size should be close to the cell size.

Background: Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) produces lung ventilation images via a thoracic electrode belt. Robust electrode design and material, providing low electrode skin contact impedance (SCI), is needed in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to compare three EIT electrode designs and materials., Methods: Simulations of cylindrical, rectangular and spiked electrode designs were used to evaluate electrode SCI as a function of electrode size, where skin contact was uneven. Gold-plated washers (E GW ), zinc-plated rivets (E ZR ) and zinc-galvanised spikes (E ZS ) were assigned randomly on two interconnected EIT belts. Gel was applied to the cranial or caudal belt and placed on 17 standing cattle. SCI was recorded at baseline and 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 minutes later., Results: Simulations that involved electrodes with a greater skin contact area had lower and more uniform SCI. In cattle, SCI decreased with all electrodes over time (p < 0.01). Without gel, no difference was found between E GW and E ZS , while SCI was higher for E ZR (p < 0.03). With gel, SCI was lower in E GW and E ZR (p < 0.026), with the SCI in E GW being the lowest (p < 0.01)., Limitations: Low numbers of animals and static electrode position may affect SCI., Conclusions: Electrode design is important for EIT measurement, with larger electrode designs able to compensate for the use of less conductive materials. This study aimed to identify the association between different cochlear metrics, including the basal turn diameter (A-value), the basal turn width (B-value), and the height of the cochlea (H-value). We also reported an association between H-value and hearing outcomes with cochlear implants (CI). This is a retrospective study that included all patients who underwent CI procedures between 2012 and 2018 at a tertiary center and have; preoperative high-resolution computed tomography (CT) , normal cochlea, postoperative follow-up duration of at least 2 years, scores of the category auditory performance II (CAP-II), and speech intelligibility rating (SIR) scales. A total of 65 ears implanted with CI in 46 patients (24 boys and 20 girls; mean age of 7 (±10) years) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. We found significant positive correlations between A vs B, A vs H, and B vs H ( P -value = 0.008, 0.018, and 0.0039, respectively). We also found a significant positive relationship between A, B, and H values and cochlear duct length (CDL) ( P -value < 0.0001, 0.008, and 0.018, respectively). Finally, the H-value was significantly correlated with the SIR ( P -value = 0.027). However, its correlation with the CAP score was not statistically significant ( P -value = 0.62). Cochlear height significantly correlated with CDL and the other cochlear parameters. The variation in cochlear height can also affect speech outcomes in patients undergoing CI. Switching bipolar radiofrequency ablation (bRFA) is a thermal treatment modality used for liver cancer treatment that is capable of producing larger, more confluent and more regular thermal coagulation. When implemented in the no-touch mode, switching bRFA can prevent tumour track seeding; a medical phenomenon defined by the deposition of cancer cells along the insertion track. Nevertheless, the no-touch mode was found to yield significant unwanted thermal damage as a result of the electrodes' position outside the tumour. It is postulated that the unwanted thermal damage can be minimized if ablation can be directed such that it focuses only within the tumour domain. As it turns out, this can be achieved by partially insulating the active tip of the RF electrodes such that electric current flows in and out of the tissue only through the non-insulated section of the electrode. This concept is known as unidirectional ablation and has been shown to produce the desired effect in monopolar RFA. In this paper, computational models based on a well-established mathematical framework for modelling RFA was developed to investigate if unidirectional ablation can minimize unwanted thermal damage during time-based switching bRFA. From the numerical results, unidirectional ablation was shown to produce treatment efficacy of nearly 100%, while at the same time, minimizing the amount of unwanted thermal damage. Nevertheless, this effect was observed only when the switch interval of the time-based protocol was set to 50 s. Intracortical microelectrodes are neuroprosthetic devices used in brain-machine interfaces to both record and stimulate neural activity in the brain. These technologies have been improved by advances in microfabrication, which have led to the creation of subcellular and high-density microelectrodes. The greater number of independent stimulation channels in these devices allows for improved neuromodulation selectivity, compared to single-site microelectrodes. Elements of electrode design such as electrode-site placement can influence the long-term performance of neuroprostheses. Previous studies have shown that electrode-sites placed on the edge of a planar microelectrode have greater chronic recording functionality than sites placed in the center. However, the effect of electrode-site placement on long-term intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) is still unknown. Here, we show that, in rats chronically implanted with custom-made planar silicon microelectrodes, electrode-sites on the tip of the device outperformed those on both the edge and center in terms of the effect per charge delivered, though there is still a slight advantage to using edge sites over center sites for ICMS. Longitudinal analysis of ICMS detection thresholds over a 16-week period revealed that while all sites followed a similar trend over time, the tip and edge sites consistently elicited the behavioral response with less charge compared to center sites. Furthermore, we quantified channel activity over time and found that edge sites remained more active than center sites over time, though the rate of decay of active sites for center and edge sites was comparable. Introduction: Despite using the soft-surgery technique, cochlear implantation may increase the damage of the intracochlear structures due to a scalar translocation of the electrode. The aim of this work was to investigate the incidence as well as the audiological and electrophysiological outcome for electrode translocations and complete scala tympani insertions of perimodiolar electrodes within a large group of patients., Material and Methods: The investigations were performed retrospectively on 255 adult subjects with a Nucleus Contour Advance or Slim Modiolar electrode (Cochlear Ltd.). The scalar position was assessed by postoperative rotational tomography. Intraoperative and one year after CI activation measured ECAP thresholds were examined as well as the postoperative speech recognition in quiet using the Freiburg monosyllable word test., Results: The incidence of a translocation was significantly lower with the Slim Modiolar than with the Contour Advance electrode (5.1% versus 32.3%; p<0.05). With a scala tympani placement the median speech recognition score was 75% (range: 20- 100%) with the Contour Advance and 72.5% (range: 27.5-95%) with the Slim Modiolar electrode. In cases with an electrode translocation, speech recognition scores show a median of 75% (range: 45-100%) and 73.8% (range: 40-80%), respectively. No significant differences in speech recognition were found between translocations and scala tympani insertions with both electrodes. Compared to scala tympani insertions, electrode translocations yielded higher ECAP thresholds at apical and medial electrode contacts (p<0.05)., Conclusion: The incidence of an electrode translocation is determined for both perimodiolar electrode types analyzed in this work. ECAP measurements provide additional information for detecting translocations compared to radiological imaging. Objective: Vertigo is a common side effect of cochlear implant (CI) treatment. This prospective study examines the incidence of postoperative vertigo over time and aims to analyze influencing factors such as electrode design and insertion angle (IA). Study Design and Setting: This is a prospective study which has been conducted at a tertiary referral center (academic hospital). Patients: A total of 29 adults were enrolled and received a unilateral CI using one of six different electrode carriers, which were categorized into "structure-preserving" (I), "potentially structure-preserving" (II), and "not structure-preserving" (III). Intervention: Subjective vertigo was assessed by questionnaires at five different time-points before up to 6 months after surgery. The participants were divided into four groups depending on the time of the presence of vertigo before and after surgery. Preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively, a comprehensive vertigo diagnosis consisting of Romberg test, Unterberger test, subjective visual vertical, optokinetic test, video head impulse test, and caloric irrigation test was performed. In addition, the IA was determined, and the patients were divided in two groups (<430°; ≥430°). Main Outcome Measures: The incidence of vertigo after CI surgery (group 1) was reported, as well as the correlation of subjective vertigo with electrode array categories (I-III) and IA. Results: Among the participants, 45.8% experienced new vertigo after implantation. Based on the questionnaire data, a vestibular origin was suspected in 72.7%. The results did not show a significant correlation with subjective vertigo for any of the performed tests. In group 1 with postoperative vertigo, 18% of patients showed conspicuous results in a quantitative analysis of caloric irrigation test despite the fact that the category I or II electrodes were implanted, which are suitable for structure preservation. Average IA was 404° for the overall group and 409° for group 1. There was no statistically significant correlation between IA and perceived vertigo. Conclusions: Though vertigo after CI surgery seems to be a common complication, the test battery used here could not objectify the symptoms. Further studies should clarify whether this is due to the multifactorial cause of vertigo or to the lack of sensitivity of the tests currently in use. Background. Understanding neural selectivity is essential for optimizing medical applications of deep brain stimulation (DBS). We previously showed that modulation of the DBS waveform can induce changes in orientation-based selectivity, and that lengthening of DBS pulses or directional segmentation can reduce preferential selectivity for large axons. In this work, we sought to investigate a simple, but important question from a generalized perspective: how do the size and shape of the contact influence neural selectivity? Methods. We created multicompartment neuron models for several axon diameters and used finite element modeling with standard-sized cylindrical leads to determine the effects on changing contact size and shape on axon activation profiles and volumes of tissue activated. Contacts ranged in size from 0.04 to 16 mm 2 , compared with a standard size of 6 mm 2 . Results. We found that changes in contact size are predicted to induce substantial changes in orientation-based selectivity in the context of a cylindrical lead, and changes in contact width or height can alter this selectivity. Smaller contact sizes were more effective in constraining neural activation to small, nearby axons. However, micro-scale contacts enable only limited spread of neural activation before exceeding standard charge density limitations; further, energetic efficiency is optimized by somewhat larger contacts. Interpretations. Small-scale contacts may be optimal for constraining stimulation in nearby grey matter and avoiding orientation-selective activation. The accurate equivalent circuit model contributes to the better fitting of required cell characteristics, such as cell impedance, cell adhesion area, and cell-electrode distance. However, so many theoretical models on specific modules make it difficult for new researchers to understand the whole model of electrode system physically. Besides, the accurate theoretical model and the simplified calculations obviously contradict each other; therefore, it is confusing for many researchers to choose the proper theoretical model to calculate the specific parameters required. In this review, we first discuss the problems and suggestions of electrode system design for cell adhesion-based measurement in terms of parasitic capacitance, detection range of cell number, electric field distribution, and interelectrode distance. The design of electrode system for cell nonadhesion measurement was analyzed in terms of microchannel size and electrode position. Then, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various equivalent circuit models according to different requirements of researchers, and simultaneously provide a corresponding theoretical model for researchers. Various factors influencing electric impedance spectroscopy (EIS) such as the parasitic capacitance between microelectrodes, the changes of cell adhesion area and cell-electrode distance, the electrode geometry, and the surface conductivity of electrode were quantitatively analyzed to contribute to better understanding of the equivalent models. Finally, we gave advice to optimize the theoretical models further and perspectives on building uniform principles of theoretical model optimization in the future.

Lithium metal batteries have achieved large-scale application, but still have limitations such as poor safety performance and high cost, and limited lithium resources limit the production of lithium batteries. The construction of these devices is also hampered by limited lithium supplies. Therefore, it is particularly important to find alternative metals for lithium replacement. Sodium has the properties of rich in content, low cost and ability to provide high voltage, which makes it an ideal substitute for lithium. Sulfur-based materials have attributes of high energy density, high theoretical specific capacity and are easily oxidized. They may be used as cathodes matched with sodium anodes to form a sodium-sulfur battery. Traditional sodium-sulfur batteries are used at a temperature of about 300 °C. In order to solve problems associated with flammability, explosiveness and energy loss caused by high-temperature use conditions, most research is now focused on the development of room temperature sodium-sulfur batteries. Regardless of safety performance or energy storage performance, room temperature sodium-sulfur batteries have great potential as next-generation secondary batteries. This article summarizes the working principle and existing problems for room temperature sodium-sulfur battery, and summarizes the methods necessary to solve key scientific problems to improve the comprehensive energy storage performance of sodium-sulfur battery from four aspects: cathode, anode, electrolyte and separator.

Objective. Electrical preferential activation of small nociceptive fibers may be achieved with the use of specialized small area electrodes, however, the existing electrodes are limited to low stimulation intensities. As existing electrodes have been developed empirically, the present study aimed to use computational modeling and optimization techniques to investigate if changes in electrode design parameters could improve the preferential activation of small fibers. Approach. Two finite element models; one of a planar concentric and one of an intra-epidermal electrode were combined with two multi-compartmental nerve fiber models of an Aδ-fiber and an Aβ-fiber. These two-step hybrid models were used for the optimization of four electrode parameters; anode area, anode-cathode distance, cathode area, and cathode protrusion. Optimization was performed using a gradient-free bounded Nelder-Mead algorithm, to maximize the current activation threshold ratio between the Aβ-fiber model and the Aδ-fiber model. Main results. All electrode parameters were optimal at their lower bound, except the cathode protrusion, which was optimal a few micrometers above the location of the Aδ-fiber model. A small cathode area is essential for producing a high current density in the epidermal skin layer enabling activation of small fibers, while a small anode area and anode-cathode distance are important for the minimization of current spread to deeper tissues, making it less likely to activate large fibers. Combining each of the optimized electrode parameters improved the preferential activation of small fibers in comparison to existing electrodes, by increasing the activation threshold ratio between the two nerve fiber types. The maximum increase in the activation threshold ratio was 289% and 595% for the intra-epidermal and planar concentric design, respectively. Significance. The present study showed that electrical preferential small fiber activation can be improved by electrode design. The globus pallidus internus and the subthalamic nucleus are common targets for deep brain stimulation to alleviate symptoms of Parkinson's disease and dystonia. In the rodent models, however, their direct targeting is hindered by the relatively large dimensions of applied electrodes. To reduce the neurological damage, the electrodes are usually implanted cranial to the nuclei, thus exposing the non-targeted brain regions to large electric fields and, in turn, possible undesired stimulation effects. In this numerical study, we analyze the spread of the fields for the conventional electrodes and several modifications. Neural stem and progenitor cells (i.e., neural precursors) are found within specific regions in the central nervous system and have great regenerative capacity. These cells are electrosensitive and their behavior can be regulated by the presence of electric fields (EFs). Electrical stimulation is currently used to treat neurological disorders in a clinical setting. Herein we propose that electrical stimulation can be used to enhance neural repair by regulating neural precursor cell (NPC) kinetics and promoting their migration to sites of injury or disease. We discuss how intrinsic and extrinsic factors can affect NPC migration in the presence of an EF and how this impacts electrode design with the goal of enhancing tissue regeneration. Accurate substrate characterisation may improve the evolving understanding and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. During substrate-based ablation techniques, wide practice variations exist with mapping via dedicated multi-electrode catheter or conventional ablation catheters. Recently, newer ablation catheter technology with embedded mapping electrodes have been introduced. This article focuses on the general misconceptions of voltage mapping and more specific differences in unipolar and bipolar signal morphology, field of view, signal-to-noise ratio, mapping capabilities (density and resolution), catheter-specific voltage thresholds and impact of micro-, mini- and multi-electrodes for substrate mapping. Efficiency and cost-effectiveness of different catheter types are discussed. Increasing sampling density with smaller electrodes allows for higher resolution with a greater likelihood to record near-field electrical information. Objectives: To determine the impact of age, electrode array, and time on impedance patterns in cochlear implant (CI) patients. Methods: A retrospective case review was performed on 98 patients implanted with the CI24RE perimodiolar (PM) and CI422 lateral wall (LW) arrays between 2010 and 2014 to assess impedances at the 1 week and 3-6 month visit after initial stimulation (IS). Results: With respect to age, impedances were higher in young patients compared to older patients in the middle and apical turns. With time, there were significant reductions in impedances across most electrodes. Electrode array type also had a significant impact on impedance measurements with PM and LW arrays having higher impedances in the basal turn and apical turns, respectively. Furthermore, PM arrays demonstrated significantly lower impedances in the middle and apical turn with time, when compared to LW arrays. Conclusions: Age, electrode array, and time can independently affect CI impedances. Moreover, we show that PM arrays may be advantageous to LW arrays, due to demonstrated lower impedances in the middle and apical turns long term. Understanding the impact of impedance on speech discrimination and determining the intracochlear processes that contribute to differences in impedance are future research directions.

In this study, the performance of electroactive bacteria (EAB), cultivated inside tubular electrode ducts, is systematically investigated to derive predictions on the behavior of EAB under conditions limited by electrochemical losses. A modeling approach is applied to assess the influence of the electrochemical losses on the electrochemical performance and scaling characteristics of complex 3D structures, such as sponges and foams. A modular flow reactor is designed that provides laminar and reproducible flow conditions as a platform for the systematic electrochemical and bioelectrochemical characterization of 3D electrodes in bioelectrochemical systems (BES). The bioelectrochemical experiments are carried out in a set of reactors incorporating cylindrical electrodes exhibiting ducts of 1 cm length and different diameters ranging from 0.1 cm up to 1 cm. Single duct calculations are extrapolated to three dimensions through geometrical considerations; trends in 3D bioanode performance are demonstrated using the resulting simplified 3D structure. In order to help answering the question 'Which electrode design is the best?', the precipitation performance of a tubular electrostatic precipitator was determined for different electrode designs with special attention to specific energy consumption. Experiments were conducted in a wire-tube arrangement with a high loading of liquid submicron particles causing strong space charge effects, also known as corona quenching. The experiments are supplemented by numerical simulation results showing the effect of residence time and power consumption on separation efficiency.

Gastric motility is governed in part by bioelectrical 'slow waves', and high-resolution electrical mapping has emerged as a clinical research tool with diagnostic potential. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of electrode diameter and contact material on in vivo extracellular slow wave recordings to inform gastric mapping device design. Custom flexible-printed-circuit electrode arrays were designed with four electrode diameters (0.3, 1.8, 3.3, 4.8 mm; 4 × 8 array) and fabricated in four contact materials (gold, silver, copper, silver-chloride). The electrode arrays were placed on the gastric serosa in vivo in pigs and unipolar slow wave signals were simultaneously recorded from each electrode. Propagation, signal morphology, and noise were quantified to determine which electrodes produced signals with the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and gradient, which is a preferred metric for detection and analytical algorithms. Electrodes of diameters 0.3 and 1.8 mm recorded significantly higher signal gradients than 3.3 and 4.8 mm (p < 0.05). Silver-chloride electrodes recorded a significantly higher gradient than all other materials (p < 0.05), with no significant differences between gold, silver, and copper electrodes. Electrodes of diameters 1.8 and 3.3 mm recorded significantly higher SNR than 0.3 mm (p < 0.05). Electrodes with a diameter of 1.8 mm provided an optimal combination to maximize the signal gradient and SNR, and silver-chloride electrodes yielded the highest signal gradient. These results can now inform gastric mapping device design, particularly minimally-invasive devices where electrode size is critical.

The present study is the first to evaluate the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and the linear and angular measurements of the cochlea in temporal bones of cochlear implant (CI) recipients. There are no studies evaluating the morphometric measures in subjects after long-term CI use, and this study fills in this gap in current knowledge, greatly important for the design of CI electrodes. Amira based 3-D reconstructions of the cochlea were generated from stained histopathological slides of 15 celloidin-embedded human temporal bones. The SGN angular distance from the round window exhibited a narrow range from 684°-704°, corresponding to linear distances of 17.87 and 34.48 mm along the inner and outer wall of the scala tympani. The first turn measured an average of 14.21 mm along the inner wall and 23.92 mm along the outer wall. The outer wall average for the second turn was 11.11 mm and for the partial third apical turn was only 4.49 mm. The range for cochlear duct angular distance was 876° to 1051°, with a mean of 2.63 turns, corresponding to an average linear distance of 39.53 mm, ranging from 35.44 mm to 43.57 mm 6 out of 15 temporal bones demonstrated better preservation of SGN in the middle and apical segments of Rosenthal's canal. The present study demonstrates that the anatomy of the cochlea of CI patients does not differ significantly from that of normative subjects and establishes measurements using the round window as the 0° reference point, an important surgical landmark. Owing to the safety issue of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) under the harsh operating conditions of electric vehicles and mobile devices, all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) that utilize inorganic solid electrolytes are regarded as a secure next-generation battery system. Significant efforts are devoted to developing each component of ASSLBs, such as the solid electrolyte and the active materials, which have led to considerable improvements in their electrochemical properties. Among the various solid electrolytes such as sulfide, polymer, and oxide, the sulfide solid electrolyte is considered as the most promising candidate for commercialization because of its high lithium ion conductivity and mechanical properties. However, the disparity in energy and power density between the current sulfide ASSLBs and conventional LIBs is still wide, owing to a lack of understanding of the battery electrode system. Representative developments of ASSLBs in terms of the sulfide solid electrolyte, active materials, and electrode engineering are presented with emphasis on the current status of their electrochemical performances, compared to those of LIBs. As a rational method to realizing high energy sulfide ASSLBs, the requirements for the sulfide solid electrolytes and active materials are provided along through simple experimental demonstrations. All-solid-state sodium ion batteries (ASIBs) based on sulfide electrolytes are considered a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage. However, the limited cycle life of ASIBs largely restricts their practical application. Cycling-stable ASIBs can be achieved only if the designed cathode can simultaneously address challenges including insufficient interfacial contact, electrochemical and chemical instability between the electrode and electrolyte, and strain/stress during operation , rather than just addressing one or part of these challenges. Chevrel phase Mo 6 S 8 has inherent high electronic conductivity and small volume change during sodiation/desodiation, and is chemically and electrochemically stable with the sulfide electrolyte, and therefore the only challenge of using Mo 6 S 8 as the cathode for ASIBs is the insufficient contact between Mo 6 S 8 and the solid electrolyte (SE). Herein, a thin layer of SE is coated on Mo 6 S 8 using a solution method to achieve an intimate contact between Mo 6 S 8 and the SE. Such a SE-coated Mo 6 S 8 cathode enabled an ASIB with a high cycling performance (500 cycles), even much better than that of the liquid-electrolyte batteries with the Mo 6 S 8 cathode. This work provides valuable insights for developing long-cycle life ASIBs.

Objectives/hypothesis: The aims of this study were to investigate short- and long-term rates of hearing preservation after cochlear implantation and identify factors that impact hearing preservation., Study Design: Retrospective review., Methods: Patients undergoing cochlear implantation with conventional-length electrodes and air-conduction thresholds ≤80 dB HL at 250 Hz preoperatively were included. Hearing preservation was defined as air-conduction thresholds ≤80 dB HL at 250 Hz., Results: The sample included 196 patients (225 implants). Overall, the rate of short-term hearing preservation was 38% (84/225), with 18% (33/188) of patients preserving hearing long term. Multivariate analysis showed better preoperative hearing was predictive of hearing preservation at short (odds ratio [OR]: 0.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.91-0.95, P < .001) and long-term follow-up (OR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.91-0.97, P < .001). Lateral wall electrodes and mid-scala electrodes had 3.4 (95% CI: 1.4-8.6, P = .009) and 5.6-times (95% CI: 1.8-17.3, P = .003) higher odds of hearing preservation than perimodiolar arrays at short-term follow-up, respectively. Long-term data revealed better hearing preservation for lateral wall (OR: 7.6, 95% CI: 1.6-36.1, P = .01), but not mid-scala (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 0.4-23.1, P = .28), when compared to perimodiolar electrodes. Round window/extended round window (RW/ERW) approaches were associated with higher rates of long-term hearing preservation (21%) than cochleostomy approaches (0%) (P = 0.002) on univariate analysis., Conclusions: Better preoperative residual hearing, lateral wall electrodes, and RW/ERW approaches are predictive of higher rates of long-term functional hearing preservation., Level of Evidence: 4. Irreversible electroporation and electrochemotherapy are 2 innovative electroporation-based minimally invasive therapies for the treatment of cancer. Combining nonthermal effects of irreversible electroporation with local application of chemotherapy, electrochemotherapy is an established treatment modality for skin malignancies. Since the application of electrochemotherapy in solid organs is a promising approach, this article describes a novel electrode configuration and field generating method. For the treatment of hepatic malignancies, the shape of the electric field should resemble a spherical 3-dimensional geometry around the target tissue inside the liver. To adapt the actual shape of the field, the probe is designed in computer-aided design with a live link to a computer simulation software: Changes in design can be revalued quickly, regarding different quality criteria for field strength inside and outside the tumor. To rate these criteria, a set of formulas with weighting coefficients has been included. As a result of this design process, a needle-shaped prototype applicator has been built, designed for an intracorporal electroporation-based treatment. It can be used as percutaneous, image-guided, minimally invasive treatment option for malignant liver tumors. The shaft of the probe is used as central electrode and fitted with additional 4 expandable electrodes. These satellite electrodes are hollow, thus serving as injectors for chemotherapeutic agents within the area of the electric field. This configuration can be used for electrochemotherapy as well as irreversible electroporation. By placing 5 electrodes with just one needle, the procedure duration as well as the radiation dose can be reduced tremendously. Additionally, the probe offers an option to adapt the field geometry to the tumor geometry by connecting the 5 electrodes to 5 individually chosen electric potentials: By fine-tuning the ablation zone via the potentials instead of adjusting the location of the electrode(s), the procedure duration as well as the radiation dose will decrease further.

High harvesting cost and reusing of post-harvest water are the major challenges in commercial production of microalgae. In this work, a flocculants-free electrolytic flotation harvest process was investigated. The electrode design and materials were evaluated in terms of harvesting efficiency. Stainless steel as the cathode and carbon as the anode were selected based on the harvesting efficiency data and non-sacrificial feature for construction of a pilot scale harvesting system. In the pilot scale experiments, 23.72g/h biomass yield was achieved at the power consumption of 2.73kWh/kg. All-inorganic solid-state sodium-sulfur batteries (ASSBs) are promising technology for stationary energy storage due to their high safety, high energy, and abundant resources of both sodium and sulfur. However, current ASSB shows poor cycling and rate performances mainly due to the huge electrode/electrolyte interfacial resistance arising from the insufficient triple-phase contact among sulfur active material, ionic conductive solid electrolyte, and electronic conductive carbon. Herein, we report an innovative approach to address the interfacial problem using a Na 3 PS 4 -Na 2 S-C (carbon) nanocomposite as the cathode for ASSBs. Highly ionic conductive Na 3 PS 4 contained in the nanocomposite can function as both solid electrolyte and active material (catholyte) after mixing with electronic conductive carbon, leading to an intrinsic superior electrode/electrolyte interfacial contact because only a two-phase contact is required for the charge transfer reaction. Introducing nanosized Na 2 S into the nanocomposite cathode can effectively improve the capacity. The homogeneous distribution of nanosized Na 2 S, Na 3 PS 4 , and carbon in the nanocomposite cathode could ensure a high mixed (ionic and electronic) conductivity and a sufficient interfacial contact. The Na 3 PS 4 -nanosized Na 2 S-carbon nanocomposite cathode delivered a high initial discharge capacity of 869.2 mAh g -1 at 50 mA g -1 with great cycling and rate capabilities at 60 °C, representing the best performance of ASSBs reported to date and therefore constituting a significant step toward high-performance ASSBs for practical applications.

Objective: The vestibular implant seems feasible as a clinically useful device in the near future. However, hearing preservation during intralabyrinthine implantation remains a challenge. It should be preserved to be able to treat patients with bilateral vestibulopathy and (partially) intact hearing. This case study investigated the feasibility of hearing preservation during the acute phase after electrode insertion in the semicircular canals., Methods: A 40-year-old woman with normal hearing underwent a translabyrinthine approach for a vestibular schwannoma Koos Grade IV. Hearing was monitored using auditory brainstem response audiometry (ABR). ABR signals were recorded synchronously to video recordings of the surgery. Following the principles of soft surgery, a conventional dummy electrode was inserted in the lateral semicircular canal for several minutes and subsequently removed. The same procedure was then applied for the posterior canal. Finally, the labyrinthectomy was completed, and the schwannoma was removed., Results: Surgery was performed without complications. No leakage of endolymph and no significant reduction of ABR response were observed during insertion and after removal of the electrodes from the semicircular canals, indicting no damage to the peripheral auditory function. The ABR response significantly changed when the semicircular canals were completely opened during the labyrinthectomy. This was indicated by a change in the morphology and latency of peak V of the ABR signal., Conclusion: Electrode insertion in the semicircular canals is possible without acutely damaging the peripheral auditory function measured with ABR, as shown in this proof-of-principle clinical investigation.

Objectives: An intraoperative neural response telemetry-ratio (NRT-ratio) was established, which can provide information about the intraoperative intracochlear electrode array position for perimodiolar electrodes., Methods: In a retrospective controlled study in 2 tertiary referral centers, the electrophysiological data sets of 50 patients with measured intraoperative auto-NRTs and postoperative radiological examinations were evaluated. All patients were implanted with Nucleus slim straight electrodes. The NRT-ratio was calculated by dividing the average auto-NRT data from electrodes 16 to 18 with the average from electrodes 5 to 7. Using a flat panel tomography system or a computed tomography, the position of the electrode array was certified radiological., Results: Radiologically, 2 out of 50 patients were identified with an electrode translocated from the scala tympani into the scala vestibuli. Objectives: As indications for cochlear implantation have expanded to include patients with more residual hearing, increasing emphasis has been placed on minimally traumatic electrode insertion. Histopathologic evaluation remains the gold standard for evaluation of cochlear trauma, but advances in imaging techniques have allowed clinicians to determine scalar electrode location in vivo . This review will examine the relationship between scalar location of electrode arrays and audiologic outcomes. In addition, the impact that surgical approach, electrode design, and insertion depth have on scalar location will be evaluated. Further, data were reviewed to determine the impact that surgical variables have on scalar electrode location., Results: Electrode insertions into the scala tympani are associated with superior speech perception and higher rates of hearing preservation. Lateral wall electrodes, and round window/extended round window approaches appear to maximize the likelihood of a scala tympani insertion. It does not appear that deeper insertions are associated with higher rates of scalar translocation., Conclusion: Superior audiologic outcomes are observed for electrode arrays inserted entirely within the scala tympani. The majority of clinical data demonstrate that lateral wall design and a round window approach increase the likelihood of a scala tympani insertion., Level of Evidence: N/A.

Medical electrical stimulators adapted to peripheral nerves use multicontact cuff electrodes (MCC) to provide selective neural interfaces. However, neuroprostheses are currently limited by their inability to locate the regions of interest to focus. Intended until now either for stimulation or recording, MCC can also be used as a means of transduction to characterize the nerve by impedancemetry. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of using electrical impedance (EI) measurements as an in vivo functional nerve monitoring technique. The monitoring paradigm includes the synchronized recording of both the evoked endogenous activity as compound action potentials (CAP) and the superimposed sine signal from the EI probe. Measurements were conducted on the sciatic nerve of rodents, chosen for its branchings towards the peroneal and tibial nerves, with both mono- and multi-contact per section electrodes. During stimulation phases, recordings showed CAP with consistent fiber conduction velocities. During coupled phases of both stimulation and sine perturbation, impedance variations were extracted using the mono-contact electrode type for certain frequencies, e.g. 2.941kHz, and were temporally coherent with the previous recorded CAP. Using a MCC, localized evoked CAP were also recorded but the signal to noise ratio (SNR) was too low to distinguish the expected associated impedance variation and deduce an image of impedance spatial changes within the nerve. The conducted in vivo measurements allowed to distinguish both evoked CAP and associated impedance variations with a strong temporal correlation. This indicates the feasibility of functional EI monitoring, aiming at detecting the impedance variations in relation to neural activity. Further work is needed to improve the in vivo system, namely in terms of SNR, and to integrate new multicontact devices in order to move towards EI tomography with the detection of spatially-localized impedance variations. New deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode designs offer operation in voltage and current mode and capability to steer the electric field (EF). The aim of the study was to compare the EF distributions of four DBS leads at equivalent amplitudes (3 V and 3.4 mA). Finite element method (FEM) simulations (n = 38) around cylindrical contacts (leads 3389, 6148) or equivalent contact configurations (leads 6180, SureStim1) were performed using homogeneous and patient-specific (heterogeneous) brain tissue models. Steering effects of 6180 and SureStim1 were compared with symmetric stimulation fields. To make relative comparisons between simulations, an EF isolevel of 0.2 V/mm was chosen based on neuron model simulations (n = 832) applied before EF visualization and comparisons. The simulations show that the EF distribution is largely influenced by the heterogeneity of the tissue, and the operating mode. Equivalent contact configurations result in similar EF distributions. In steering configurations, larger EF volumes were achieved in current mode using equivalent amplitudes. The methodology was demonstrated in a patient-specific simulation around the zona incerta and a "virtual" ventral intermediate nucleus target. Polyaniline (PANI) is a promising pseudocapacitance electrode material. However, its structural instability leads to low cyclic stability and limited rate capability which hinders its practical applications. In view of the limitations, flexible PANI-based composite films are developed to improve the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. We report in the research a facile and cost-effective approach for fabrication of a high-performance supercapacitor (SC) with excellent cyclic stability and tunable energy and power densities. SC electrode containing a very high mass loading of active materials is a flexible film of PANI, tissue wiper-based cellulose, graphite-based exfoliated graphite (ExG), and silver nanoparticles with potential applications in wearable electronics. The optimum preparation weight ratios of silver nitrate/aniline and ExG/aniline used in the research are estimated to be 0.18 and 0.65 (or higher), respectively. Our results show that an ultrahigh capacitance of 3.84 F/cm(2) (240.10 F/g) at a discharge rate of 5 mA can be achieved. In addition, our study shows that the power density can be increased from 1531.3 to 3000 W/kg by selecting the weight ratio of ExG/aniline to be more than 0.65, with a sacrifice in the energy density. The obtained promising electrochemical properties are found to be mainly attributed to an effective combination of PANI, ExG, cushiony cellulose scaffold, and silver as well as the porosity of the composite.

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been shown to be effective for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and primary dystonia. However, mixed results have been reported in Huntington's disease (HD)., Case Report: A single case of HD DBS was identified from the University of Florida DBS Brain Tissue Network. The clinical presentation, evolution, surgical planning, DBS parameters, clinical outcomes, and brain pathological changes are summarized., Discussion: This case of HD DBS revealed that chorea may improve and be sustained. Minimal histopathological changes were noted around the DBS leads. Severe atrophy due to HD likely changed the DBS lead position relative to the internal capsule.

Since the 1970s, computational modeling has been used to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of cochlear implant stimulation. Lumped parameter models and analytical models have been used to simulate cochlear potentials, as well as three-dimensional volume conduction models based on the Finite Difference, Finite Element, and Boundary Element methods. Additionally, in order to simulate neural responses, several of these cochlear models have been combined with nerve models, which were either simple activation functions or active nerve fiber models of the cochlear auditory neurons. This review paper will present an overview of the ways in which these computational models have been employed to study different stimulation strategies and electrode designs. Research into stimulation strategies has concentrated mainly on multipolar stimulation as a means of achieving current focussing and current steering, while modeling work on electrode design has been chiefly concerned with finding the optimal position and insertion depth of the electrode array. Finally, the present and future of computational modeling of the electrically stimulated cochlea is discussed.

Many electroactive polymer (EAP) actuators use diverse configurations of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as pliable electrodes to realize discontinuous, agile movements, for CNTs are conductive and flexible. However, the reported CNT-based EAP actuators could only accomplish simple, monotonous actions. Few actuators were extended to complex devices because efficiently preparing a large-area CNT electrode was difficult, and complex electrode design has not been carried out. In this work, we successfully prepared large-area CNT paper (buckypaper, BP) through an efficient approach. The BP is highly anisotropic, strong, and suitable as flexible electrodes. By means of artful graphic design and processing on BP, we fabricated various functional BP electrodes and developed a series of BP-polymer electrothermal actuators (ETAs). The prepared ETAs can realize various controllable movements, such as large-stain bending (>180°), helical curling (∼ 630°), or even bionic actuations (imitating human-hand actions). These functional and interesting movements benefit from flexible electrode design and the anisotropy of BP material. Owing to the advantages of low driving voltage (20-200 V), electrolyte-free and long service life (over 10000 times), we think the ETAs will have great potential applications in the actuator field.

Synchronization of populations of neurons is a hallmark of several brain diseases. Coordinated reset (CR) stimulation is a model-based stimulation technique which specifically counteracts abnormal synchrony by desynchronization. Electrical CR stimulation, e.g., for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), is administered via depth electrodes. In order to get a deeper understanding of this technique, we extended the top-down approach of previous studies and constructed a large-scale computational model of the respective brain areas. Furthermore, we took into account the spatial anatomical properties of the simulated brain structures and incorporated a detailed numerical representation of 2 · 10(4) simulated neurons. We simulated the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the globus pallidus externus (GPe). Connections within the STN were governed by spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP). In this way, we modeled the physiological and pathological activity of the considered brain structures. In particular, we investigated how plasticity could be exploited and how the model could be shifted from strongly synchronized (pathological) activity to strongly desynchronized (healthy) activity of the neuronal populations via CR stimulation of the STN neurons. Furthermore, we investigated the impact of specific stimulation parameters especially the electrode position on the stimulation outcome. Our model provides a step forward toward a biophysically realistic model of the brain areas relevant to the emergence of pathological neuronal activity in PD. Furthermore, our model constitutes a test bench for the optimization of both stimulation parameters and novel electrode geometries for efficient CR stimulation.

Objectives: To review Cochlear's electrode portfolio and discuss the merits of current and future straight and perimodiolar electrode arrays. To present an update on implant reliability., Methods: Performance and hearing preservation data from studies involving the Slim Straight (CI422), Hybrid L24 and Contour Advance electrode array were reviewed., Results: While several studies in past found little difference in performance outcomes between subjects implanted with perimodiolar and straight arrays, recent studies demonstrated that proximity to the modiolus is correlated with better performance. Hearing threshold increase was lowest with the Hybrid L24, closely followed by the slim straight array and was largest with the Contour Advance array. The CI24RE receiver-stimulator used for the three arrays had a cumulative survival of 99% at eight years post implantation., Conclusions: Combining the hearing preservation benefits of slim straight arrays with perimodiolar proximity is the design objective of Cochlear's next generation electrodes.
