This paper presents a survey and critical analysis of the mathematical literature on modeling of dynamic populations living in a fluid medium. The present review paper is divided into two main parts: The first part deals with the multiscale derivation of deterministic and stochastic cross-diffusion systems governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The derivation is obtained from the underlying description at the microscopic scale in kinetic theory models according to the micro-macro decomposition method. In the second part of this review, we are delighted to present a new variety of mathematical models describing different applications, namely, the pursuit-evasion dynamics, cancer invasion, and virus dynamics. Objective: COVID-19, first identified in December 2019, quickly became a global pandemic and remains a significant public health concern. Robust data is rare, especially in pregnant women. The symptoms of this disease range from mild to severe respiratory distress syndrome and mortality. The present study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing COVID-19 severity in women to be better prepared in case of a new epidemic., Patients and Methods: This retrospective matched case-control study based on body mass index, smoke, and drug use was conducted on all women hospitalized with COVID-19 at Afzalipour Hospital in Kerman, Iran from the beginning of 2020 to 2021. In this study, 130 female patients with COVID-19 were included, with 65 patients in the case group (moderate and severe cases of COVID-19) and 65 patients in the control group (mild cases of COVID-19). The data were entered into the Stata software, and to determine the effective risk factors for the severity of COVID-19 disease, both univariate and multivariable conditional logistic regression analyses were utilized, assuming individual matching. Finally, the odds ratios (OR), along with 95% confidence intervals (CI), were estimated., Results: The average age of women in the case group was 36.92 ± 7.07 years, compared to 30.12 ± 6.27 years in the control group. Among all patients, 50% were pregnant, with a mean gestational age of 30.03 weeks. Significant factors affecting disease severity included age, education, employment status, place of residence, insurance coverage, comorbidities, and pregnancy status. The highest adjusted odds ratio for severe COVID-19 was associated with comorbidities (OR = 7.8, 95% CI: 2.3-11.1), while the lowest was associated with urban residence (OR = 2.8, 95% CI: 1.02-4.5). Overall, significant predictors of severe COVID-19 included age over 30, urban residence, lack of insurance, a short duration between diagnosis and hospitalization, comorbidities, and non-pregnancy., Conclusions: The study identified several significant predictors of severe COVID-19 among women, including age over 30, urban residency, lack of insurance coverage, presence of comorbidities, and non-pregnancy, all of which were associated with a heightened risk of severe illness. Notably, comorbidities emerged as the strongest predictor. These findings underscore the critical need for targeted interventions to protect vulnerable populations.

Background: Solid tumors often develop hypoxic regions, leading to aggressive behavior and increased drug resistance., Methods: The chemical composition of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil (EO) was analyzed using GC-MS. Alginate nanoparticles containing the EO and its primary component, citral, were synthesized via the ionic gelation method. Encapsulation was confirmed using ATR-FTIR analysis. The anticancer efficacy of C. citratus EO, citral, and their respective alginate nanoparticles was evaluated under normoxic (21% oxygen) and hypoxic (1% oxygen) conditions on breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) and melanoma (A-375) cell lines. Additionally, qPCR and flow cytometry were used to assess apoptosis gene expression ratios (Bax/Bcl-2) and levels of apoptosis., Results: Citral (80.98%) was identified as the major component of the EO. Alginate nanoparticles containing C. citratus EO and citral (C. citratus-AlgNPs and citral-AlgNPs) were synthesized with particle sizes of 195 ± 4 nm and 222 ± 9 nm, and zeta potentials of -22 ± 3 mV and - 17 ± 1 mV, respectively. Both samples demonstrated significantly greater efficacy under hypoxic conditions. Citral and C. citratus-AlgNPs had IC 50 values of 27 (19-39) µg/mL and 25 (4-147) µg/mL, respectively, against MDA-MB-231 and A-375 cells. Flow cytometry showed increased apoptosis under hypoxic conditions, with the highest rates observed for citral-AlgNPs and C. citratus-AlgNPs (84 ± 5 and 92 ± 5% in MDA-MB-231 and A-375 cells, respectively)., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that alginate nanoparticles enhance the anticancer activity of C. citratus-AlgNPs and citral, particularly under hypoxic conditions, highlighting their potential for hypoxia-targeted cancer therapies., (© 2024. This study aimed to investigate the effects of CpG Oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG ODNs)-Coated Chitosan Nanoparticles (CNP) on the phenotype of murine macrophages and their pro-inflammatory cytokine profile in vitro. CNP-CpG ODNs loaded with FITC-scrambled siRNA were prepared using the ionotropic gelation method. Peritoneal macrophages were isolated and exposed to CNP-CpG ODNs. Treated macrophages were assessed for uptake capacity. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate the expression levels of MHC-II, CD40, and CD86 costimulatory molecules in treated macrophages. Furthermore, the secretion levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) and the release of nitric oxide (NO) were measured in the culture supernatant of treated macrophages using sandwich ELISA and the Griess reaction, respectively. These in vitro studies showed that CNP-CpG ODNs had no cytotoxic effect on macrophages and were efficiently taken up by them. Additionally, CNP-CpG ODNs significantly increased the production of TNF-α, IL-6, and NO in the culture supernatant compared to CNP alone. Moreover, CNP-CpG ODNs enhanced the expression of MHC-II, CD40, and CD86 costimulatory molecules on macrophages. These findings indicate that incorporating CpG ODNs into CNPs promotes macrophage maturation and a proinflammatory phenotype. Background: The care process involves essential tasks of assisting, supporting, and facilitating nursing activities to meet the comprehensive needs of patients. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global infectious disease that has caused a pandemic. Nurses play a crucial role in caring for and treating patients with COVID-19. This study aims to explain the care process in patients with COVID-19., Materials and Methods: A qualitative study using the grounded theory method was conducted from 2021 to 2022. Eleven nurses providing care to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were purposively selected from the COVID wards of Shariati Hospital in Tehran, Iran. Data were collected through in-depth semistructured interviews and observation. Data analysis was conducted using the approach developed by Corbin and Strauss (2008)., Results: The data analysis phase identified a main theme of "protection and support in the shadow of uncertainty" along with five main categories and ten subcategories. The main categories included "encountering life-threatening crisis", "maintaining safety", "improving the patient's physical health", "encouraging", and "feeling satisfied despite the burden of care"., Conclusions: Nurses aimed to improve the physical and psychological conditions of patients with COVID-19 by implementing a comprehensive care plan. The five main categories identified can be considered the primary approach to nursing care in the COVID-19 crisis. A new biosorbent was fabricated by modification of bacterial cellulose biopolymer grafted with lanthanum sulfide decorated carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotube (La 2 S 3 @MWCNT@BC). The sorbent was employed in a green alternative dispersive-solid phase extraction of a variety of 14 pesticides in environmental water samples. The analyses were performed using GC-µECD. The properties and structure of La 2 S 3 @MWCNT@BC nanocomposite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and adsorption-desorption isotherms. The composition of the sorbent was also investigated to evaluate the adsorptive properties of its constituents. The impact of various parameters influencing extraction efficacies such as sorbent dose, adsorption time, sample pH, ionic strength, and desorption conditions was investigated. The method was validated by specificity, matrix effect % (-0.4 to -7.4), enrichment factor (4-10), limits of quantification (0.007-0.31 μg L -1 ), matrix-matched calibration linearity (0.01-200 µg L -1 ), determination coefficients (r 2 =0.9921-0.9998), and precision. The optimized method was applied for the analysis of multiclass pesticides in seven environmental and drinking waters and the recoveries were obtained in the 81-108 % range with RSDs of 2.5-4.7 %. This paper is the first report on the synthesis and use of La 2 S 3 @MWCNT@BC nanocomposite to extract pesticides from different water samples. Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether mammographic and sonographic features of malignant breast lesions are correlated with tumor histologic grade, hormonal receptor, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and Ki-67 status., Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, imaging and histopathological findings of 187 biopsy-proven breast cancer cases from November 2019 to February 2021 were reviewed. The Chi-square test was used to examine the potential correlation between mammographic and sonographic characteristics with histopathological features such as hormonal receptor, HER2 status, Ki-67 labeling index, and histological grade., Results: We observed that microlobulated margin as well as oval/round morphology in mammograms correlate with triple-negative intrinsic subtype ( P = 0.006 and P = 0.004). The presence of calcification in sonography was significantly higher in the luminal-B subtype ( P = 0.002). Furthermore, ill-defined margins in mammography were significantly higher in amplified HER2 expression ( P = 0.004) in the same manner as an oval/round shape in higher levels of Ki-67 ( P = 0.030)., Conclusion: Mammography and sonography features may reflect the biological behavior of various subtypes of breast cancer and can detect more aggressive breast cancers that can mimic benign or less malignant appearing lesions. These findings may be an excellent predictor for some subtypes like triple-negative breast cancer. The methylation pattern of non-imprinting genes was little studied, although it is widely known that the abnormal methylation levels of imprinting genes are associated with different forms of male infertility. The purpose of this research was to assess the CREM gene's methylation status and seminal characteristics in infertile individuals who were potential intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) candidates. A total of 45 semen samples (15 normospermia, 15 asthenospermia, and 15 oligoasthenoteratospermia) were examined. Using aniline blue (AB) staining, we carried out conventional semen analysis, chromatin quality, and sperm maturity testing. DNA was taken from semen samples, and all isolated DNA was assessed using Nanodrop and gel electrophoresis. A quantitative methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (Q-MSP) approach was used to quantify the methylation at the DMRs of the CREM gene. According to our findings, sperm count (P=0.012), concentration (P= 0.019), motility (P=0.006), progression (P=0.006), and normal morphology (P=0.004) were all inversely correlated with abnormal sperm chromatin condensation. Additionally, we noted that the methylation level of the CREM gene was considerably more significant in the oligoasthenoteratospermia group compared to the asthenospermia and normospermia groups (P<0.05). Additionally, sperm count (P=0.043), progression (P=0.026), and normal morphology (P=0.024) were all inversely linked with CREM methylation. Overall, the abnormal CREM methylation patterns have a negative impact on sperm parameters. Background: The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a global health emergency necessitates continued investigation of the disease progression. This study investigated the relationship between eosinophilia and the severity of COVID-19 in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 73 COPD patients infected by COVID-19 in Afzalipour Hospital, Iran. Peripheral blood samples were collected for hematological parameter testing, including eosinophil percentage, using Giemsa staining. Eosinophilia was defined as≥ 2% and non-eosinophilia as< 2%. The severity of pulmonary involvement was determined based on chest CT severity score (CT-SS) (based on the degree of involvement of the lung lobes, 0%: 0 points, 1-25%: 1 point, 26-50%: 2 points, 51-75%: 3 points, and 76-100%: 4 points). The CT-SS was the sum of the scores of the five lobes (range 0-20)., Results: The average age of patients was 67.90±13.71 years, and most were male (54.8%). Non-eosinophilic COPD patients were associated with more severe COVID-19 (P= 0.01) and lower oxygen saturation (P= 0.001). In addition, the study revealed a significant difference in the chest CT severity score (CT-SS) between non-eosinophilic (9.76±0.7) and eosinophilic COPD patients (6.26±0.63) (P< 0.001). Although non-eosinophilic COPD patients had a higher mortality rate, this difference was not statistically significant (P= 0.16)., Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that reduced peripheral blood eosinophil levels in COPD patients with COVID-19 correlate with unfavorable outcomes. Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a remarkable increase in public volunteering for the care of hospitalized patients. They faced challenges during their voluntary care provision. This study aimed at exploring public volunteers' experiences of the challenges of the voluntary care provision to hospitalized patients with COVID-19., Methods: A descriptive qualitative study with an inductive content analysis method was conducted, 2022-2023. Eighteen public volunteers providing care to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were purposefully selected among 10 hospitals, specialized in COVID-19 care in Tehran and Shiraz, Iran. Data were collected over 7 months through in-depth semistructured interviews and concurrently analyzed using conventional content analysis methods., Findings: The challenges of voluntary care provision to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were illustrated in five main categories, each with two subcategories. The categories included structural challenges, interpersonal conflicts, financial constraints, covert participation and the deteriorating condition of care provision. The subcategories comprised lack of volunteer recruitment bases, ineffective organization of voluntary activities, pervasive distrust, heightened risk of clinical errors, conflicts between volunteer commitments and primary occupation, lack of financial support, lack of family support, isolation by friends, mental trauma and physical exhaustion., Conclusion: Public volunteers encounter diverse challenges while providing care to hospitalized patients with COVID-19, which negatively impacts their motivation to serve. By addressing these challenges, we can create a more supportive environment for volunteers and enhance the quality of care provided to patients during public health emergencies. Identifying such challenges can assist healthcare managers and policymakers develop effective strategies to mitigate mounting difficulties and enhance volunteer services, thereby improving the overall quality of care provided to patients during public health crises., Patient Contributions: Participants were identified and recruited after the study objectives were explained in person to the managers. Litter is a common pollution in the urban environment and public places such as beaches, which has serious health and economic consequences. Several indexes are used to interpret the pollution status caused by litter, which have different limitations and strengths. In this review, the efficiency and characteristics of different indexes were compared. For this purpose, related articles were searched in Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Knowledge, and after screening, 21 articles were selected. The main questions of this study included factors affecting the interpretation of pollution in different indexes and the criteria considered in each index. The results showed that the existing indexes based on the type of litter include two categories of comprehensive indexes such as Clean Environment Index and specific indexes such as Cigarette Butt Pollution Index. Also, the index can be divided into two categories in terms of spatial application, including general indexes such as Environmental Status and specific indexes such as Clean Coast Index. An important difference in the indexes is the importance of the impact of the pollution potential of different litter in the assessment of the status in indexes such as Clean Environment Index and Environmental Status, while indexes such as Clean Coast Index evaluate the status based only on the density of litter. Background: The benefit of surfactant replacement therapy for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) has been demonstrated. However, some surfactants are expensive and usually inaccessible. Consequently, the Iranian Survanta was produced, but its effect on complications and mortality of RDS is unknown. This study aimed to compare the therapeutic outcomes of Iranian surfactant (beraksurf) and BLES (bovine lipid extract surfactant) on RDS treatment among preterm neonates., Methods: This triple blinded randomized controlled trial study was performed on 128 eligible neonates diagnosed with RDS in Afzalipour hospital in Kerman, Iran. Diagnosis of RDS, gestational age of 28-34 weeks and weight ≥ 1 kg were considered as inclusion criteria. Congenital anomalies such as congenital cyanotic heart diseases, digestive system anomalies and chromosome abnormalities were the exclusion criteria Neonates were randomly assigned into two equal groups: (1) those treated with BLES (n = 64) and (2) those treated with beraksurf (n = 64). Complications including patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), sepsis, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), pneumothorax, pulmonary hemorrhage, mortality, and also, the number of days required for invasive mechanical ventilation (using ventilator) and non-invasive continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) were evaluated for all neonates. The risk ratio (RR) was calculated at 95% of confidence intervals (CI)., Results: Compared with BLES group, the RR estimate among neonates in beraksurf group was 0.89 (0.66-1.20) for PDA, 0.71 (0.23-2.13) for IVH, 0.44 (0.14-1.36) for sepsis, 0.35 (0.13-0.93) for pneumothorax, 0.33 (0.12-0.86) for pulmonary hemorrhage, and 0.55 (0.28-1.05) for mortality., Conclusions: Despite advances in the use of exogenous surfactants for the treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome; There are still some controversial topics in this field. The results obtained in the present study showed that the two types of surfactant (BERAKSURF and BLES) have similar efficacy for the treatment and short-term outcomes in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome. Therefore, due to the cost-effectiveness of BRAKSURF compared to BLES, We recommend choosing BERAKSURF in terms of treatment., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Fetal development is a critical phase in prenatal care, demanding the timely identification of anomalies in ultrasound images to safeguard the well-being of both the unborn child and the mother. Medical imaging has played a pivotal role in detecting fetal abnormalities and malformations. However, despite significant advances in ultrasound technology, the accurate identification of irregularities in prenatal images continues to pose considerable challenges, often necessitating substantial time and expertise from medical professionals. In this review, we go through recent developments in machine learning (ML) methods applied to fetal ultrasound images. Specifically, we focus on a range of ML algorithms employed in the context of fetal ultrasound, encompassing tasks such as image classification, object recognition, and segmentation. We highlight how these innovative approaches can enhance ultrasound-based fetal anomaly detection and provide insights for future research and clinical implementations. Furthermore, we emphasize the need for further research in this domain where future investigations can contribute to more effective ultrasound-based fetal anomaly detection.

In dual-band RF front-end systems, to transmit different frequency signals in different paths, each path requires the power to be divided along two transmission channels. In such systems, a circuit is created in which the input ports of power dividers with different frequency bands are connected to the output ports of a diplexing circuit in a cascade form. These circuits often contain different band filters in their schemes and have a complicated design. In this paper, an innovative technique for designing a diplexing power divider for Ku-band applications is presented. The proposed structure is designed on multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs) and the utilization of a transition based on an extended SMA connector. The extended SMA connector provides two separate paths for the transmission of the RF signals. Hence, the proposed structure eliminates the need for intricate and bulky bandpass filters, allowing seamless integration with other planar devices and components within Ku-band satellite subsystems. In fact, the proposed architecture channelizes the divided output electromagnetic signals into two separate frequency spectrums. With the presented technique, two frequency ranges are envisaged, covering Ku-band applications at 13-15.8 GHz and 16.6-18.2 GHz. With the proposed structure, an insertion loss as low as 1.5 dB was achieved. A prototype of the proposed power-divider diplexing device was fabricated and measured. It exhibits a good performance in terms of return loss, isolation, and insertion losses.

Controlling the wound exudates accompanied by microbial wound infections has still remained as one the most challenging clinical issues. Herein, a chitosan/gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol xerogel film containing Thymus pubescens essential oil is fabricated for antimicrobial wound dressing application. The chemical and physical characteristics of the devised formulation is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscope, and tensile tests. Moreover, swelling capability, water vapour transmission rate, water contact angle, solubility, moisture content, and release properties are also studied. The antimicrobial and antibiofilm tests are performed using the broth microdilution and XTT assay, respectively. The produced formulation shows excellent antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida species. It is also demonstrated that the obtained film can reduce (∼80 %) Candida albicans biofilm formation, and its biocompatibility is confirmed with MTT (∼100 %) and hemolysis tests. The antimicrobial activity can be correlated to the microbial membrane attraction for Candida albicans cells, illustrated by flow cytometry. This proposed film with appropriate mechanical strength, high swelling capacity in different pH values (∼200-700 %), controlled release property, and antimicrobial and antioxidant activities as well as biocompatibility can be used as a promising candidate for antimicrobial wound dressing applications., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest There is no financial/personal conflict of interest in this paper., (Copyright © 2023. Background: Approximately two-thirds of infant mortality within the first year of life are caused by preterm labor (PL)., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of progesterone-based compounds to prevent PL., Materials and Methods: This randomized clinical trial study was conducted on 146 pregnant women admitted to Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Afzalipour hospital in Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Kerman, Iran in June 2019. The participants with PL received Tocolytic and 12 mg Betamethasone in 2 doses over 2 days to mature the fetus's lungs. Stopping PL was considered a 12-hr period without any contractions after finishing the Tocolytic. Following the successful cessation of PL, the participants were monitored for 48 hr. Subsequently, the participants were divided into 2 groups. Participants received 200 mg Lutogel capsules orally per day in group A while group B received a weekly dose of 250 mg Proluton in the form of intramuscular injection, respectively. Treatment in groups continued until the 36 th wk of delivery. The participants were followed-up weekly, and if any signs of PL were detected, an obstetrician carried out a vaginal examination., Results: The incidence of PL was the same in both groups. There was no significant difference in the latent phase, average birth weight, and the neonatal intensive care unit admission frequency (p = 0.07, 0.17, 0.58, respectively) between groups., Conclusion: No difference in the results obtained from theneonataloutcomes evaluated in groups. Both medications similarly led to recovering pregnancy and neonatal outcomes caused by PL. Zataria multiflora essential oil is a natural volatile plant product whose therapeutic applications require a delivery platform. Biomaterial-based hydrogels have been extensively used in biomedical applications, and they are promising platforms to encapsulate essential oils. Among different hydrogels, intelligent hydrogels have recently attracted many interests because of their response to environmental stimuli such as temperature. Herein, Zataria multiflora essential oil is encapsulated in a polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/gelatin hydrogel as a positive thermo-responsive and antifungal platform. According to the optical microscopic image, the encapsulated spherical essential oil droplets reveal a mean size of 1.10 ± 0.64 μm, which are in consistent with the SEM imaging results. Encapsulation efficacy and loading capacity are 98.66 % and 12.98 %, respectively. These results confirm the successful efficient encapsulation of the Zataria multiflora essential oil within the hydrogel. The chemical compositions of the Zataria multiflora essential oil and the fabricated hydrogel are analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. It is found that thymol (44.30 %) and γ-terpinene (22.62 %) are the main constituents of the Zataria multiflora essential oil. The produced hydrogel inhibits the metabolic activity of Candida albicans biofilms (∼60-80 %), which can be related to the antifungal activity of the essential oil constituents and chitosan. Based on the rheological results, the produced thermo-responsive hydrogel shows a gel-sol viscoelastic transition at a temperature of 24.5 °C. This transition leads to a facile release of the loaded essential oil. The release test depicts that about 30 % of Zataria multiflora essential oil is released during the first 16 min. In addition, 2, 5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay demonstrates that the designed thermo-sensitive formulation is biocompatible with high cell viability (over 96 %). Background: Considering the importance of scorpions and recognizing the mechanisms of toxicity caused by their medically important species in Iran and adopting the best therapeutic approach based on these mechanisms, this study was performed by reviewing the clinical manifestations of scorpion stings., Methods: The research was conducted by searching for articles and researches in related websites (PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science and CINAHL) and using domestic and international authoritative journals using the keywords of scorpion, clinical manifestations, in a review method. Finally, 104 qualified sources were selected and after reviewing and criticizing these studies, the author's point of view was presented., Results: Clinical manifestations of Scorpion sting toxicity vary due to the existence of two toxic classes of neurotoxins and cytotoxins or hemotoxins in these arthropods in Iran. The number and distribution of species with neurotoxic venom are higher than the scorpions with cytotoxic venom and are reported throughout Iran. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease that activates several molecular pathways involved in neurodegenerative disorders. Metformin, an anti-hyperglycemic drug used for treating DM, has the potential to exert a significant neuroprotective role against the detrimental effects of DM. This review discusses recent clinical and laboratory studies investigating the neuroprotective properties of metformin against DM-induced neurodegeneration and the roles of various molecular pathways, including mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and its related cascades. A literature search was conducted from January 2000 to December 2022 using multiple databases including Web of Science, Wiley, Springer, PubMed, Elsevier Science Direct, Google Scholar, the Core Collection, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library to collect and evaluate peer-reviewed literature regarding the neuroprotective role of metformin against DM-induced neurodegenerative events. The literature search supports the conclusion that metformin is neuroprotective against DM-induced neuronal cell degeneration in both peripheral and central nervous systems, and this effect is likely mediated via modulation of oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell death pathways., (© 2023. Introduction: Due to the chronic nature of the diabetes, patients who suffer from this disease need education to take care of themselves and increase self-care. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effect of e-learning and teach-back methods on the performance of diabetic patients., Methods: In this study, 144 patients with type 2 diabetes were selected based on purposive sampling. Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the subjects were divided into two groups of intervention (n = 48) and control (n = 48) by simple randomization. The two intervention groups included the e-learning group whose subjects were trained by entering the training site for three months and the teach-back group whose subjects were trained during four 60-minute sessions for three months. The control group was followed up according to routine care. Before and one month after the intervention, data were collected using self-care questionnaires in the areas of knowledge and performance based on interviews and blood glucose tests and self-reporting. The data were analyzed using SPSS 21 and statistical tests of ANOVA, independent t and Pearson's correlation coefficient., Results: The results showed that both e-learning (P = 0.001) and teach-back training (P = 0.008) methods were associated with a significant increase in self-care compared to before the intervention, but only in the teach-back group, this increase was significant compared to control group(P = 0.002) and the training methods showed no significant effect on blood sugar level and BMI of the patients (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that both electronic and teach-back training methods have been effective on the level of self-care of diabetic patients. Background: Opiate abuse has been critically increased in the world, especially in Iran. Owing to the association of opiate use with multiple human cancers and neurological disorders, seeking for genetic and epigenetic effects of opium can pave the way for early diagnosis of major health defects in addicted users. Accordingly, the present study aimed to determine the methylation status of the promoter of two genes, which are actively involved in neurodevelopment and cancer evolution., Methods: DNA was isolated from peripheral blood of 28 opium abusers and 19 healthy controls and then subjected to sonication. Sonicated DNAs undergone methylated DNA immunoprecipitation-real time polymerase chain reaction (MeDIP-Real Time PCR) using specific primer pairs designed for HOXA9 and NISCH genes. Obtained data were analyzed using SPSS software., Findings: HOXA9 and NISCH genes were found to be significantly methylated in addicted users compared to controls ( P <0.001) which was significantly associated with the mean of the age regarding HOXA9 gene ( P =0.002). Neither opium amount nor duration or route of using was associated with the methylation status of HOXA9 or NISCH genes., Conclusion: Hypermethylation of HOXA9 and NISCH genes as tumor suppressor in opium-addicted individuals can be considered as confirmatory evidence for carcinogenesis of opium. This current work expresses numerical simulation of forced turbulent flow convection in a grooved cylinder. Rectangular grooves with a spacing of A = 1, A = 1.1, and A = 1.3, and groove depth to cylinder diameter of e/D = 0.1 and 0.2 were considered. This research concentrates on the effect of groove depth, location of the grooves and CuO nanoparticles on the heat transfer for Reynolds numbers 10000, 12,500, 15,000 and 17,500 in volume fractions of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4% of nanoparticles. Results show that grooves improve heat transfer. This behavior at a lower A ratio results in a significant Nu number increase so that the highest Nu number occurs for A ratio of 1, 1.1 and 1.3. Increasing e/D ratio, due to increasing the channel section in this area, results in loss of velocity and dissipation of flow momentum, resulting in lower convective heat transfer and lower Nu number. Changing the pitch for e/D = 0.1 results in a 1.1 to 1.6 times increase of Nu number compared with the smooth channel, and for e/D = 0.2 this value is 1.1-1.5 times the smooth channel for similar Re, φ and geometry. Changing groove pitch at e/D = 0.1 results in a 2.1-2.9 times increase in friction factor compared with the smooth channel in similar conditions. For e/D = 0.2, this increase is 1.8-2.8 times the smooth channel. In low Re, the thermal performance is higher than in higher velocities. Background & Objective: Occurrence of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) infection may be common in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) patients and may lead to chronic infection as well as cirrhosis. We intended to determine the incidence of HEV infection among HIV-1 patients compared to individuals without HIV-1 infection., Methods: In our cross-sectional study, 87 HIV-1-positive patients were compared to 93 healthy individuals in Kerman, Iran. Plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from all the participants. Plasma samples were evaluated for HEV IgM and IgG using the ELISA kit. Then, reverse transcriptase-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nested PCR) was used in RNA extractions from PBMCs to check for the presence of HEV RNA., Results: Among the subjects examined in our study, 61 (70.1%) and 71 (77.4%) out of patients with HIV-1 infection and healthy individuals were male, respectively. The average ages of patients with HIV-1 and the control group were 40.2 years and 39.9 years, respectively. No discernible differences were found between the two groups based on IgM and IgG seropositivity against the HEV. However, HEV-RNA was found in 8% of patients with HIV-1 and 1.1% of HIV-1-negative individuals (P=0.03). There was also an association between the HEV genome and anti-HEV and anti-HCV antibodies in HIV-1-positive patients (P=0.02 and P=0.014, respectively)., Conclusion: HEV infection may be more common in HIV-1 patients and may develop a chronic infection in immunocompromised individuals. Background: Methylmalonic aciduria is a rare inherited metabolic disorder with autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. There are still MMA patients without known mutations in the responsible genes. This study aimed to identify mutations in Iranian MMA families using autozygosity mapping and NGS., Methods: Multiplex PCR was performed on DNAs isolated from 12 unrelated MMA patients and their family members using 19 STR markers flanking MUT, MMAA, and MMAB genes, followed by Sanger sequencing. WES was carried out in the patients with no mutation., Results: Haplotype analysis and Sanger sequencing revealed two novel, mutations, A252Vf*5 and G87R, within the MMAA and MUT genes, respectively. Three patients showed no mutations in either autozygosity mapping or NGS analysis., Conclusion: High-frequency mutations within exons 2 and 3 of MUT gene and exon 7 of MMAB gene are consistent with the global expected frequency of genetic variations among MMA patients.

Objective: Despite the critical role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of brain tumours, there are still many pitfalls in the exact grading of them, in particular, gliomas. In this regard, it was aimed to examine the potential of Transfer Learning (TL) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms in the accurate grading of gliomas on MRI images., Materials and Methods: Dataset has included four types of axial MRI images of glioma brain tumours with grades I-IV: T1-weighted, T2-weighted, FLAIR, and T1-weighted Contrast-Enhanced (T1-CE). Images were resized, normalized, and randomly split into training, validation, and test sets. ImageNet pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were utilized for feature extraction and classification, using Adam and SGD optimizers. Logistic Regression (LR) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) methods were also implemented for classification instead of Fully Connected (FC) layers taking advantage of features extracted by each CNN., Results: Evaluation metrics were computed to find the model with the best performance, and the highest overall accuracy of 99.38% was achieved for the model containing an SVM classifier and features extracted by pre-trained VGG-16., Discussion: It was demonstrated that developing Computer-aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems using pre-trained CNNs and classification algorithms is a functional approach to automatically specify the grade of glioma brain tumours in MRI images. Introduction: Human trichomoniasis is a widespread sexually transmitted disease and the concern of drug resistance in the parasite is growing. Hence, this study was performed to evaluate in vitro antitrichomonal activity of Satureja khuzestanica, carvacrol, thymol, eugenol, and phytochemical evaluation of the S. khuzestanica oil., Methodology: Extracts and essential oil of S. khuzestanica, and the components were prepared. Then, susceptibility testing was performed using the microtiter plate method and Trichomonas vaginalis isolates. The minimum lethal concentration (MLC) of the agents was determined in comparison with metronidazole. Also, the essential oil was investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detector., Results: After 48 hours of incubation, carvacrol and thymol were the most effective antitrichomonal agents with MLC of 100 µg/mL, followed by the essential oil and hexanic extract (MLC = 200 µg/mL), then eugenol and methanolic extract (MLC = 400 µg/mL), in comparison with the metronidazole MLC of 6.8 µg/mL. Overall, 33 identified compounds accounted for 98.72% of the total essential oil composition with carvacrol, thymol, and p-cymene being the major constituents., Conclusions: The results suggested the potency of S. khuzestanica and its bioactive ingredients against T. vaginalis. Since wound dressing has been considered a promising strategy to improve wound healing, recent attention has been focused on the development of modern wound dressings based on synthetic and bioactive polymers. In this study, we prepared a multifunctional wound dressing based on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)/sodium alginate (Alg) hydrogel containing a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) in which simvastatin (SIM) has been encapsulated. This dressing aimed to act as a barrier against pathogens, eliminate excess exudates, and accelerate wound healing. Among various fabricated composites of dressing, the hydrogel composite with a CMC/sodium Alg ratio of 1:2 had an average pore size of about 98.44 ± 26.9 μm and showed 707 ± 31.9% swelling and a 2116 ± 79.2 g m -2 per day water vapor transfer rate (WVTR), demonstrating appropriate properties for absorbing exudates and maintaining wound moisture. The NLC with optimum composition and properties had a spherical shape and uniform particle size distribution (74.46 ± 7.9 nm). The prepared nanocomposite hydrogel displayed excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as well as high biocompatibility on L929 mouse fibroblast cells. It can release the loaded SIM drug slowly and over a prolonged period of time. The highest drug release occurred (80%) within 14 d. Research Background: Food by-products such as onion peels and olive leaves are rich in bioactive compounds applicable as natural and low-cost sources of antioxidants. Still, these compounds mainly exist in glycosylated form. Often, hydrolysis of glycoside compounds increases their antioxidant activity and health benefits. However, not many studies have been done concerning the β-glucosidase effect, specifically from Aspergillus niger , on glycosylated compounds within these by-products. Also, changes in the antioxidant activity of the mentioned by-products under the effect of β-glucosidase have not been reported yet. Therefore, this study considers the effect of A. niger β-glucosidase on glucoside compounds and the antioxidant activity of onion peel and olive leaf extracts., Experimental Approach: The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Also, glucose, total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured. Moreover, TLC and HPLC analyses were performed before and after the enzymatic hydrolysis., Results and Conclusions: The obtained results showed an increase in the extract antioxidant activity after treatment. Also, β-glucosidase increased the glucose content of the extracts. The thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results showed the β-glucosidase efficacy to hydrolyze quercetin glucosides in onion peel extract, and the quercetin concentration increased from (0.48±0.04) mg/mL in the untreated extract to (1.26±0.03) mg/mL in the treated extract (0.5% m / V ) after 3 h of enzymatic hydrolysis at 45 °C. Also, the content of quercetin-3-O-glucoside increased considerably from (1.8±0.1) to (54±9) µg/mL following the enzyme treatment. Moreover, oleuropein in olive leaf extract (1% m / V ) was hydrolyzed completely from (0.382±0.016) to 0 mg/mL by β-glucosidase for 24 h at 50 °C., Novelty and Scientific Contribution: This study showed that A. niger β-glucosidase, as a stable enzyme, hydrolyzed quercetin and oleuropein glycosides in onion peel and olive leaf extracts. Thus, A. niger β-glucosidase is a good candidate for processing the food waste and extracting valuable bioactive compounds. Background : Gastrointestinal (GI), liver, and pancreaticobiliary diseases, in addition to the high health care utilization, account for a significant proportion of disability and death in Iran. We aimed to assess the incidence of in-hospital mortality for the total GI, liver, and pancreaticobiliary diseases in all hospitals in Kerman, Iran. Methods : In a cross-sectional study from May 2017 to April 2018, we collected the data of in-hospital death records due to GI, liver, and pancreaticobiliary diseases in all hospitals in Kerman city. GI and liver diseases were classified into three main categories: 1. Non-malignant GI diseases, 2. Non-malignant liver and pancreaticobiliary diseases, and 3. GI, liver, and pancreaticobiliary malignancies. All data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 22 (IBM). Results : Of 3427 in-hospital mortality, 269 (7.84%) deaths were due to GI, liver, and pancreaticobiliary diseases, of which 82 (30.48%) were related to non-malignant GI disorders, 92 (34.20%) to the non-malignant liver and pancreaticobiliary diseases, and 95 (35.31%) were associated with GI, liver and pancreaticobiliary malignancies. Most patients were male (62.08%), and the most common age was between 60-80 years (40.5%). GI bleeding occurred in 158 (58.73%) patients, and variceal bleeding was the most common cause (28.48%). Additionally, cirrhosis was reported in 41 out of 92 (44.56%), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) was the most common cause of cirrhosis among 17 out of 41 (41.46%). Foeniculum vulgare Mill. and Mentha piperita L. are two common medicinally important plants with a wide range of biological activities such as insecticide and antibacterial effects. In this study, the chemical composition of their essential oils was investigated using GC-MS analysis. After that, their nanoemulsions were prepared; optimum samples with droplet sizes of 74 ± 7 and 136 ± 5 nm were gelified. The viscosity of the prepared nanogels and the successful loading of the essential oil in them were investigated. The efficacy of the nanogel containing M. piperita essential oil as a repellent and antibacterial agent was more potent than the nanogel containing F. vulgare essential oil. Its completely protected time against Anopheles stephensi , the main malaria mosquito vector, was 120 ± 8 min. Moreover, the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus after treatment with 5000 µg/mL of nanogel containing M. piperita essential oil was reduced by 100 and 65%, respectively. Background: The present study aims to study antibacterial effects and cellular mechanisms of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles loaded with piroctone olamine (Fe3O4@PO NPs) against some cariogenic bacteria ( Streptococcus mutans and Actinomyces viscosus)., Methods: Nanoparticles was synthesized by the coprecipitation method. Antibacterial effects of Fe3O4@PO NPs were performed by calculating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). We also evaluated the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protein leakage to assess whether antibacterial effects may be dependent on these mechanisms., Results: The results demonstrated that PO showed the lowest antibacterial effect compared to other drugs tested with MICs values of 53.33 and 64 μg/ml for S. mutans and A. viscosus , respectively. In contrast, the highest antibacterial effect was related to Fe3O4@PONPs with MICs values of 2.66 and 3.33 μg/ml for S. mutans and A. viscosus , respectively. Fe3O4@PONPs, Fe3O4MNP, and PO markedly increased (p < 0.001) ROS production and protein leakage of tested bacteria at ≥¼ MIC, ≥1/3 MIC, and ½ MIC, respectively., Conclusion: The findings of the present survey revealed the promising antibacterial effects of Fe3O4@PONP against some cariogenic bacteria; whereas it triggered the ROS production and protein leakage as the possible antibacterial mode of action of anti-infective agents. Background: The treatment of anal fistula has been a conundrum for surgeons over the years. Various methods such as fistulotomy, fistulectomy, seton, ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT), advancement flaps, fibrin glue, and plugs are well-known techniques. Yet, they may be followed by several considerable complications, including incontinency and recurrence., Methods: In this study, the outcomes of the "Jump" and "Seton" techniques are compared. A randomized controlled trial consisting of 130 cases with cryptoglandular anal fistula randomly sorted into two groups was conducted. Group A underwent the "Jump technique" while group B underwent the "Seton technique." Outcomes, incontinency and recurrences in particular, were evaluated after a year of treatment. Data were analyzed by Fisher Exact, Chi-Square and Mann Whitney Tests., Results: Group A with 65 cases underwent the "Jump technique" while group B with 65 cases underwent the "Seton Method." Recurrence was reported in 12 (20%) cases in group A and 10 (15.6%) cases in group B ( p = 0.687 ). Overall incontinence was reported in 3 (4.6%) cases in group A and 18 (27.7%) cases in group B ( P = 0.001 ). The total St. Mark's scores for incontinency of group A ( 0.092 ± 0.52 ) and group B ( 1.8 ± 02.47 ) significantly differed ( p < 0.001 )., Conclusions: The "Jump technique", named after a runner who jumped over hurdles, has obviated these complications. The "Jump technique" had satisfactory results and can be utilized as a first-line approach for all types of fistulas. Moreover, it can be redone for cases with recurrences without affecting the continence, paving the way to change the technique during operations.

Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) could abrogate cancer recurrences, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. To clarify the effects of IORT-induced wound fluid on tumor progression, we treated breast cancer cell lines and human-derived tumor spheroids in 2D and microfluidic cell culture systems, respectively. The viability, migration, and invasion of the cells under treatment of IORT-induced wound fluid (WF-RT) and the cells under surgery-induced wound fluid (WF) were compared. Our findings showed that cell viability was increased in spheroids under both WF treatments, whereas viability of the cell lines depended on the type of cells and incubation times. Both WFs significantly increased sub-G1 and arrested the cells in G0/G1 phases associated with increased P16 and P21 expression levels. The expression level of Caspase 3 in both cell culture systems and for both WF-treated groups was significantly increased. Furthermore, our results revealed that although the migration was increased in both systems of WF-treated cells compared to cell culture media-treated cells, E-cadherin expression was significantly increased only in the WF-RT group. In conclusion, WF-RT could not effectively inhibit tumor progression in an ex vivo tumor-on-chip model. A stacked multi-layer substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) microstrip patch antenna with broadband operating bandwidth and low cross-polarization radiation is provided. A complete study on the propagating element bandwidth and cross polarization level is presented to demonstrate the importance of the design. The proposed antenna includes three stacked printed circuit board (PCB) layers, including one layer for the radiating 2 × 2 rectangular patch elements and two SIW PCB layers for the feeding network. There are two common methods for excitation in cavity-backed patch antennas: probe feeding (PF) and aperture coupling (AC). PF can be used to increase the bandwidth of the antenna. Although this method increases the antenna’s bandwidth, it produces a strong cross-polarized field. The AC method can be used to suppress cross-polarized fields in microstrip patch antennas. As microstrip patch antennas are inherently narrowband, the AC method has little effect on their bandwidth. This paper proposes an antenna that is simultaneously fed by AC and PF. As a result of this innovation, the operating bandwidth of the antenna has increased, and cross-polarization has been reduced. Actually, the combination of probe feeding and aperture coupling schemes leads to achieving a broadband operating bandwidth. The arrangement of radiator elements and cavities implements a mirrored excitation technique while maintaining a low cross-polarization level. In both numerical and experimental solutions, a less than −30 dB cross-polarization level has been achieved for all of the main directions. A fractional impedance bandwidth of 29.8% (10.55−14.25 GHz) for S11 < −10-dB is measured for the proposed array. Simulated and measured results illustrate good agreement. Having features like low cost, light weight, compactness, broadband, integration capabilities, and low cross-polarization level makes the designed antenna suitable for remote-sensing and satellite applications.

Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes that represent critical elements of the inflammatory response. The dysregulation of the best-characterized complex, the NLRP3 inflammasome, has been linked to the pathogenesis of diseases such as multiple sclerosis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. While there exist molecular inhibitors specific for the various components of inflammasome complexes, no currently reported inhibitors specifically target NLRP3 PYD homo-oligomerization. In the present study, we describe the identification of QM380 and QM381 as NLRP3 PYD homo-oligomerization inhibitors after screening small molecules from the MyriaScreen library using a split-luciferase complementation assay. Our results demonstrate that these NLRP3 PYD inhibitors interfere with ASC speck formation, inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine IL1-β release, and decrease pyroptotic cell death. We employed spectroscopic techniques and computational docking analyses with QM380 and QM381 and the PYD domain to confirm the experimental results and predict possible mechanisms underlying the inhibition of NLRP3 PYD homo-interactions.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are crucial cells that play an essential role in the maintenance, self-renewal, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) in the bone marrow niche. It has been proven that MSCs can be used as a feeder layer for the proliferation of HSCs to enhance the number of HPCs and HSCs. Recently, it has been demonstrated that MSC-derived exosome (MSC-DE) has critical roles in different biological processes in bone marrow (BM). In the current research, we examined the importance of hypoxia-preconditioned MSC-derived exosomes (HP-MSC-DE) and normoxia-preconditioned MSC-derived exosomes (NP-MSC-DE) in the self-renewal and long-term clonogenic potential of umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cells (UCB-HSCs). We showed that the secretion rate and component of the exosome (EXO) were changed in HP-MSC-DE compared to NP-MSC-DE. Notably, the Jagged-1 (Notch ligand) content of EXO was much more plentiful in HP-MSC-DE compared to NP-MSC-DE. The addition of HP-MSC-DE enriched by Jagged-1 to the co-culture system stimulates the Notch pathway on the membrane of UCB-HSCs CD133+ and enhances proliferation. HP-MSC-DE induction using an anti-Jagged-1 antibody suppresses all biological functions of the Jagged-1 protein. Importantly, HP-MSC-DE containing Jagged-1 could change the biology of HSCs CD133+ and increase the self-renewal capacity, quiescence, and clonogenic potential of CD133+ cells. Moreover, they support generating a large number of primitive cells. Introduction: Measurement of pancreatic beta cell mass in animal models is a common assay in diabetes researches. Novel whole-organ clearance methods in conjunction with transgenic mouse models hold tremendous promise to improve beta cell mass measurement methods. Here, we proposed a refined method to estimate the beta cell mass using a new transgenic Tg( Pdx1-GFP ) mouse model and a recently developed free-of-acrylamide clearing tissue (FACT) protocol. Methods: First, we generated and evaluated a Tg( Pdx1-GFP ) transgenic mouse model. Using the FACT protocol in our model, we could quantify the beta cell mass and alloxan-induced beta cell destruction in whole pancreas specimens. Results: Compiled fluorescent images of pancreas resulted in enhanced beta cell mass characterization in FACT-cleared sections (2928869±120215 AU) compared to No-FACT cleared sections (1292372±325632 AU). Additionally, the total number of detected islets with this method was significantly higher than the other clearance methods (155.7 and 109, respectively). Using this method, we showed green fluorescent protein (GFP) expression confined to beta cells in Tg( Pdx1-GFP ) transgenic. This enhanced GFP expression enabled us to accurately measure beta cell loss in a beta cell destruction model. The results suggest that our proposed method can be used as a simple, and rapid assay for beta cell mass measurement in islet biology and diabetes studies. This paper investigates the optical properties of the two plasma photonic crystal structures. The first structure contains periodic thin layers of plasma with heterogeneous densities, and in the second one, the heterogeneous plasma layer has been applied as the defect layer of a one-dimensional photonic crystal. Herein, the plasma density distribution function is considered a continuous function of plasma critical density as follows: n = n cr f ( r →), where n cr = m e ε 0 ω 2 / e 2 represents the critical density of the plasma and f ( r →) indicates the plasma density distribution function. The heterogeneous plasma layer is assumed to be composed of several homogeneous sublayers with constant density. The transfer-matrix method is applied in calculations, and the total transfer matrix is obtained by multiplying the transfer matrices of each sublayer. Properties and behavior of the photonic bandgap and the defect mode for five different plasma density distribution functions and applied external constant magnetic field are comparatively investigated. Results show that, in the first structure, increasing the incident angle from 0° to 30° causes a bandgap shift to higher frequencies. So, the incident angle is a parameter that can control the bandgap. In the defective structure, the intensity of the defect modes is almost the same in all five distributions, but their locations in the spectrum are different. The effect of the lateral position of the maximum density and external constant magnetic field on the defect mode position is also investigated. The capability of controlling the photonic bandgaps and defect modes of the plasma photonic crystals creates wide applications in promising tunable optical devices, such as optical filters.

Background: In northern Iran and other cold regions, winter freezing injury and resultant yield instability are major limitations to strawberry production. However, there is scarcity of information on the physiological and biochemical responses of strawberry cultivars to freezing stress. This study aimed to investigate the physiological and biochemical responses of strawberry cultivars (Tennessee Beauty, Blakemore, Kurdistan, Queen Elisa, Chandler, Krasnyy Bereg, and Yalova) to different freezing temperature treatments (- 5, - 10, - 15, - 20, and - 25 °C) under controlled conditions., Results: All measured physiological and biochemical features were significantly affected by the interaction effect between low temperatures and cultivars. Tennessee Beauty showed the highest RWC at - 25 °C. The highest Fv/Fm was observed in Queen Elisa. Krasnyy Bereg had the least freezing injury (FI) in crown and leaf, while Yalova and Chandler showed the highest crown and leaf FI, respectively. At - 20 to - 25 °C, the highest carbohydrates contents of crown and leaf were noted in Blakemore and Krasnyy Bereg cultivars, respectively. The Yalova showed the highest protein content in both crown and leaf tissues at - 25 °C. The Tennessee Beauty and Blackmore cultivars showed the highest proline in crowns and leaves at - 15 °C, respectively. The highest ThioBarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) contents in the crown and leaf were observed in Kurdistan and Queen Elisa, respectively. Queen Elisa and Krasnyy Bereg cultivars showed SOD and POD peaks in the crown at - 15 °C, respectively., Conclusion: Freezing stress was characterized by decreased Fv/Fm and RWC, and increased FI, TBARS, total carbohydrates, total proteins, proline content, and antioxidant enzyme activity. The extent of changes in above mentioned traits was cultivar dependent. FI and TBARS were the best traits among destructive parameters for evaluating freezing tolerance. Moreover, maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm index), as non-destructive parameters, showed a significant efficiency in rapid assessment for screening of freezing tolerant strawberry cultivars. The cultivars Krasnyy Bereg, Queen Elisa, and Kurdistan were the most tolerant cultivars to freezing stress. Background: The lifestyle of the mother during pregnancy can affectthe health of their baby. Since lifestyle change is a sociocultural act and the motivations associated with lifestyle patterns during pregnancy cannot be explained in quantitative studies, a comprehensive study of the lifestyle during pregnancy and factors influencing its patterns was needed to investigate it from different aspects. Thus, the present study aimed to explore 'mothers' perceptions and experiences about lifestyle patterns during and after pregnancy and the reasons for adopting these lifestyles., Methods: The present study, conducted on 20 pregnant or postpartum women living in Bushehr, Iran, has used a conventional content analysis approach. The purposeful sampling method was used with maximum diversity and continued until data saturation. data were collected through face-to-face, in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Informed consent was obtained from all participants, and assuringthe confidentiality of their information. MAXQDA 10 software was used to analyze the data., Results: Four main themes were defined after data analysis; "Being a mother as motivation for adopting a new healthy lifestyle"; "Access to information from media and supports from physicians as facilitators of adopting healthy lifestyle"; "Aspects of lifestyle modifications" and "Durability of healthy lifestyles". When women become pregnant, they feel a responsibility tohave a healthy pregnancy. They care about their fetuses more than themselves, which motivated them to look for the best lifestyle. In this way, access information from mass media and recommendations from professionals (physicians, midwives, and other health care providers) were helpful factors to have a healthy lifestyle, leading to modifying physical, mental, and religious aspects of lifestyle. However, despite reminding the advantages of a healthy lifestyle, these changesshift to a pre-pregnancy lifestyle due to the cessation of support and care provided during pregnancy., Conclusion: The study results showed that pregnant women should be motivated to modify their lifestyle andadopt healthy lifestyles. Pregnant women seek to modify their lifestyle because of motherhood responsibility and and having a healthy baby. Access to information and supports from various sources promote a mother's inner decision to change, leading to modifying different aspects of life. However, these modifications often shift to the pre-pregnancy lifestyle due to cessation of supports and care, despite reminding the benefits of the lifestyle change. Objectives: The wound healing potential of beta-blocker drugs such as propranolol (PNL) has recently attracted attention. To date, incorporation of PNL into electrospun nanofibrous wound dressing mats has not been tested as a novel topical drug delivery system. Presently, electrospun nanofibrous mats loaded with PNL were fabricated, and their physicochemical properties and wound healing activities were evaluated., Materials and Methods: Polyvinyl alcohol solutions containing 0, 2% or 4% (wt/vol) PNL were electrospun into mats, and the physicochemical properties and PNL release were evaluated. In vitro biocompatibility of selected PNL-loaded mats was tested in human foreskin fibroblasts and wound healing capability was evaluated in mouse skin wounds., Results: The 4% PNL mat had thin fibers (160 nm), convincing porosity (79.5%), and good hydrophilicity (swelling: 89.1%, water contact angle: 42.1°) with little degradability (14.2%). The release of PNL was not in bursts and was best explained by the Korsmeyer-Peppas equation (R2 = 0.96, n = 0.40), suggesting Fickian release. The viability of fibroblasts was 173% on day 5 of incubation with 4% PNL mats, indicating good mat biocompatibility. In vivo treatment for 14 days with 4% PNL mats resulted in wounds with a surface area of only 9% of the original wound area. These wounds had better histopathologic characteristics and were associated with less oxidative stress., Conclusion: The wound dressing fabricated with 4% PNL showed good potential for wound healing because of a favorable drug release profile from the nanofiber scaffold, and can be considered eligible for further clinical research., Competing Interests: The authors declare that no conflict of interest exists.

Choosing the material with the best regeneration potential and properties closest to that of the extracellular matrix is one of the main challenges in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Natural polymers, such as collagen, elastin, and cellulose, are widely used for this purpose in tissue engineering. Cellulose derived from bacteria has excellent mechanical properties, high hydrophilicity, crystallinity, and a high degree of polymerization and, therefore, can be used as scaffold/membrane for tissue engineering. In the current study, we reviewed the latest trends in the application of bacterial cellulose (BC) polymers as a scaffold in different types of tissue, including bone, vascular, skin, and cartilage. Also, we mentioned the biological and mechanical advantages and disadvantages of BC polymers. Given the data presented in this study, BC polymer could be suggested as a favorable natural polymer in the design of tissue scaffolds. The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and 3C-like protease (3CLpro) from SARS-CoV-2 play crucial roles in the viral life cycle and are considered the most promising targets for drug discovery against SARS-CoV-2. In this study, FDA-approved drugs were screened to identify the probable anti-RdRp and 3CLpro inhibitors by molecular docking approach. The number of ligands selected from the PubChem database of NCBI for screening was 1760. Ligands were energy minimized using Open Babel. The RdRp and 3CLpro protein sequences were retrieved from the NCBI database. For Homology Modeling predictions, we used the Swiss model server. Their structure was then energetically minimized using SPDB viewer software and visualized in the CHIMERA UCSF software. Molecular dockings were performed using AutoDock Vina, and candidate drugs were selected based on binding affinity (∆G). Hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions between ligands and proteins were visualized using Ligplot and the Discovery Studio Visualizer v3.0 software. Our results showed 58 drugs against RdRp, which had binding energy of - 8.5 or less, and 69 drugs to inhibit the 3CLpro enzyme with a binding energy of - 8.1 or less. Six drugs based on binding energy and number of hydrogen bonds were chosen for the next step of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate drug-protein interactions (including Nilotinib, Imatinib and dihydroergotamine for 3clpro and Lapatinib, Dexasone and Relategravir for RdRp). Except for Lapatinib, other drugs-complexes were stable during MD simulation. Raltegravir, an anti-HIV drug, was observed to be the best compound against RdRp based on docking binding energy (-9.5 kcal/mole) and MD results. According to the MD results and binding energy, dihydroergotamine is a suitable candidate for 3clpro inhibition (-9.6 kcal/mol). These drugs were classified into several categories, including antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, cardiovascular, anticoagulant, BPH and impotence, antipsychotic, antimigraine, anticancer, and so on. The common prescription-indications for some of these medication categories appeared somewhat in line with manifestations of COVID-19. We hope that they can be beneficial for patients with certain specific symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, but they can also probably inhibit viral enzymes. We recommend further experimental evaluations in vitro and in vivo on these FDA-approved drugs to assess their potential antiviral effect on SARS-CoV-2., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Introduction: Mothers with preterm infants experience numerous stressful problems which can have negative effects on maternal role adaptation. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of consultation using a problem-solving approach on adaptation to the maternal role in women with late preterm infants. Methods: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) was carried out on 80 women with spontaneous late preterm infants recruited at Ayatollah Mousavi Hospital of Zanjan. Using convenience sampling method, the participants were assigned into two groups of intervention and control according to block design. Taking a problem-solving approach, counselling was carried out individually in four sessions. The control group received only routine care. The data were collected using adaptation to maternal role questionnaire including 33 items based on a five-point Likert scale ranging in seven areas, in two steps (before counselling and one month after the last counselling session). Data analysis was performed using the SPSS ver. 16.0 software (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL). Results: The total score of adaptations to maternal role and its areas was significantly higher in the intervention group after the follow-up period. Conclusion: A comprehensive counselling including various dimensions of maternity adaptation had a positive effect on improving the adaptation to maternal role in mothers with late preterm infants., (© 2021 The Author(s).)

Background: Tetracycline antibiotics are employed for human and animal health and for speeding up growth rates. However, their presence in food products and environmental waters has been a concern for some years. Therefore, a variety of sample preparation methods have been developed for the analysis of tetracycline residues in these matrices., Results: An electrochemically controlled solid phase microextraction based on a modified copper electrode with polyaniline/graphene oxide (PANI/GO) conductive nanocomposite was developed for the extraction of oxytetracycline, tetracycline and doxycycline before high-performance liquid chromatography-UV analysis. PANI/GO was synthesized by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization, characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and bound on the electrode using high purity conductive double-sided adhesive carbon glue. The significant factors affecting the performance of microextraction were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized conditions [sample, 15 mL; sorbent, 10 mg; pH, 3.0; electroextraction voltage, -0.9 V; electroextraction time, 20 min; eluent (MeOH/NH 3 ), 500 μL; and desorption time, 5 min], the limits of detection for target analytes were in the ranges 0.32-1.01 and 2.42-7.59 μg L -1 in water and milk samples, respectively. The linear ranges were 1.06-750 μg L -1 for water and 8.05-750 μg L -1 for milk samples. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were 2.32-3.80 and 3.29-4.25, respectively. The method was applied to the determination of analytes in milk and water samples with different fat contents, and the recoveries were obtained in the range 71-104%., Conclusion: The developed electro-microextraction method provides a facile, rapid, cost-effective, sensitive and efficient promising procedure for the extraction of antibiotics in complex matrices. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Recently, the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network approved a plan to allocate kidneys within 250-nm circles around donor hospitals. These homogeneous circles might not substantially reduce geographic differences in transplant rates because deceased donor kidney supply and demand differ across the country. Using Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients data from 2016-2019, we used an integer program to design unique, heterogeneous circles with sizes between 100 and 500 nm that reduced supply/demand ratio variation across transplant centers. We weighted demand according to wait time because candidates who have waited longer have higher priority. We compared supply/demand ratios and average travel distance of kidneys, using heterogeneous circles and 250 and 500-nm fixed-distance homogeneous circles. We found that 40% of circles could be 250 nm or smaller, while reducing supply/demand ratio variation more than homogeneous circles. Supply/demand ratios across centers for heterogeneous circles ranged from 0.06 to 0.13 kidneys per wait-year, compared to 0.04 to 0.47 and 0.05 to 0.15 kidneys per wait-year for 250-nm and 500-nm homogeneous circles, respectively. The average travel distance for kidneys using heterogeneous, and 250-nm and 500-nm fixed-distance circles was 173 nm, 134 nm, and 269 nm, respectively. Background: Intracanal disinfection is a critical, yet challenging goal for long-term success in regenerative-based treatments. This in-vitro study aimed to assess the release profile of triple antibiotic- eluting Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin (I-PRF) constructs in 28 days., Methods: I-PRF scaffolds containing triple antibiotic mixture [Metronidazole (MET), Ciprofloxacin (CIP), and Minocycline (MINO)] by immersion (group one), I-PRF scaffolds containing triple antibiotic mixture by integration (group two), and antibiotic-free I-PRF scaffolds (group three) were fabricated. The antibiotic release from the scaffolds was measured using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) (the mobile phase of 0.1% formic acid and methanol (35:65 v/v), a C18 analytical column (150 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) at a flow rate of 0.7 mL/min, at 25ºC) at days 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28., Results: Retention times for MINO, CIP, and MET were achieved as 2.3, 2.6, and 3.1 min, respectively. The maximum UV absorbance values for CIP, MET, and MINO were 268 nm, 278 nm, and 350 nm, respectively. The results of the first group showed burst release within the first 24 hours followed by sustained maintenance of all three antibiotics up to 14 days. MINO and MET were still detectable in the third week. The second group could not sustainably release the antibiotics., Conclusion: The developed method for the simultaneous identification and quantification of each antibiotic in I-PRF was sensitive and quick. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous disease with various genetic and epigenetic factors leading to difficulties in response to both the therapy and drug resistance. Moreover, even in tumors with similar histopathological characteristics, different responses and molecular features could be observed because of the genetic basis and its interactions with the living environment. Through personalized medicine, we can classify patients into separate groups according to their genetic and epigenetic features and their susceptibility for a specific disease which could help with choosing the best therapeutic approach.
