This study explored the potential application of plasma coupling ionic liquid on disintegration of waste activated sludge and enhanced production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in anaerobic fermentation. Under optimal conditions (dosage of ionic liquid [Emim]OTf = 0.1 g/g VSS (volatile suspended solids) and discharge power of dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBD) = 75.2 W), the [Emim]OTf/DBD pretreatment increased SCFA production by 302 % and acetic acid ratio by 53 % compared to the control. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the [Emim]OTf/DBD combination motivated the generation of various reactive species (such as H 2 O 2 , O 3 , •OH, 1 O 2 , ONOO - , and •O 2 - ) and enhanced the utilization of physical energies (such as heat). The coupling effects of [Emim]OTf/DBD synergistically improved the disintegration of sludge and biodegradability of dissolved organic matter, promoting the sludge anaerobic fermentation process. Moreover, the [Emim]OTf/DBD pretreatment enriched hydrolysis and SCFAs-forming bacteria while inhibiting SCFAs-consuming bacteria. The net effect was pronounced expression of genes encoding key enzymes (such as alpha-glucosidase, endoglucanase, beta-glucosidase, l-lactate/D-lactate dehydrogenase, and butyrate kinase) involved in the SCFA-producing pathway, enhancing the production of SCFAs from sludge anaerobic fermentation. In addition, [Emim]OTf/DBD pretreatment facilitated sludge dewatering and heavy metal removal. Mine tailings are extremely oligotrophic environments frequently contaminated with elevated As and Sb, making As(III) and Sb(III) oxidation potentially important energy sources for the tailing microbiome. Although they have been proposed to share similar metabolic pathways, a systemic comparison of the As(III) and Sb(III) oxidation mechanisms and energy utilization efficiencies requires further elucidation. In this study, we employed a combination of physicochemical, molecular, and bioinformatic analyses to compare the kinetic and genetic mechanisms of As(III) and Sb(III) oxidation as well as their respective energy efficiencies for fueling the key nutrient acquisition metabolisms. Thiobacillus and Rhizobium spp. were identified as functional populations for both As(III) and Sb(III) oxidation in mine tailings by DNA-stable isotope probing. However, these microorganisms mediated As(III) and Sb(III) oxidation via different metabolic pathways, resulting in preferential oxidation of Sb(III) over As(III). Notably, both As(III) and Sb(III) oxidation can facilitate nitrogen fixation and phosphate solubilization in mine tailings, with Sb(III) oxidation being more efficient in powering these processes. Thus, this study provided novel insights into the microbial As(III) and Sb(III) oxidation mechanisms and their respective nutrient acquisition efficiencies, which may be critical for the reclamation of mine tailings.

Background: No consensus has been concluded with regarding to the scope of lymph node (LN) dissection for Siewert type II and III adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG). This study aimed to explore risk factors for lower perigastric LN (LPLN) metastases (including no. 4d, 5, 6, and 12a LN stations) and analyze the indications for LPLN dissection., Methods: In total, 302 consecutive patients with Siewert type II and III AEG who underwent total gastrectomy (TG) were enrolled. The logistic regression model was used to perform uni- and multivariate analyses of risk factors for LPLN metastases. Kaplan-Meier curves were used for survival analysis, and log-rank tests were used for group comparisons. Basing on the guidelines of Japanese Gastric Cancer Association, the LN metastases (LNM) as well as the efficiency index (EI) of each LN station was further evaluated., Results: The independent risk factors for LPLN metastases in patients with Siewert type II and III AEG were distance from the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) to the distal end of the tumor (> 4.0 cm), preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) ( +), pT4 stage, and HER-2 ( +). LPLN metastases was an independent risk factor for overall survival following TG. The LNM and EI of LPLN were 8.6% and 2.31%, respectively. The LNM of LPLN > 10% under the stratification of the distance from the EGJ to the distal end of the tumor (> 4.0 cm), pT4, preoperative CEA ( +), and HER-2 ( +) exhibited EI values of 3.55%, 2.09%, 2.51%, and 3.64%, respectively., Conclusions: LPLN metastases was a malignant factor for the prognosis of patients with Siewert type II and III AEG. A photoredox-catalyzed alkylarylation of activated alkenes via a radical C-C bond cleavage/Truce-Smiles rearrangement cascade is developed. The protocol features mild and redox-neutral conditions, broad substrate scope and excellent functional group compatibility, providing a facile and efficient approach to the long-chain distal keto-amides with all-carbon quaternary centers at the alpha position.

Purpose: To investigate whether the mixed approach is a safe and advantageous way to operate laparoscopic right hemicolectomy., Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 316 patients who underwent laparoscopic right hemicolectomy in our center. They were assigned to the middle approach group (n = 158) and the mixed approach group (n = 158) according to the surgical approaches. The baseline data like gender、age and body mass index as well as the intraoperative and postoperative conditions including operation time, blood loss, postoperative hospital stay and complications were analyzed., Results: There were no significant differences in age, sex, BMI, ASA grade and tumor characteristics between the two groups. Compared with the middle approach group, the mixed approach group was significantly lower in terms of operation time (217.61 min vs 154.31 min, p < 0.001), intraoperative blood loss (73.8 ml vs 37.97 ml, p < 0.001) and postoperative drainage volume. There was no significant difference in the postoperative complications like postoperative anastomotic leakage, postoperative infection and postoperative intestinal obstruction., Conclusions: Compared with the middle approach, the mixed approach is a safe and advantageous way that can significantly shorten the operation time, reduce intraoperative bleeding and postoperative drainage volume, and does not prolong the length of hospital stay or increase the morbidity postoperative complications., (© 2024. Aromatization-driven deconstruction and functionalization of spiro dihydroquinazolinones via dual photoredox/nickel catalysis is developed. The aromatization effect was introduced to synergistically drive unstrained cyclic C-C bond cleavage, with the aim of overcoming the ring-size limitation of nitrogen-centered radical induced deconstruction of carbocycles. Herein, we demonstrate the synergistic photoredox/nickel catalyzed deconstructive cross-coupling of spiro dihydroquinazolinones with organic halides. Remarkably, structurally diverse organic halides including aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl, and alkyl bromides were compatible for the coupling. In addition, this protocol is also characterized by its mild and redox-neutral conditions, excellent functional group compatibility, high atom economy, and easy scalability. A telescoped procedure involving condensation and ring-opening/coupling was found to be accessible. Wastewater resource recovery not only allows the extraction of value-added products and offsets the operational costs of wastewater treatment, but it is also conducive to alleviating adverse environmental issues due to energy and chemical inputs and associated emissions. A number of attractive compounds such as alginate-like polymers, struvite, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and sulfated polysaccharides, were found and successfully obtained from wastewater and have a wide range of application prospects. The aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive review of recent advances in recovery of these popular products from wastewater, and their physicochemical properties, main sources, and current recovery status are summarized. Various factors influencing the recovery performance of these materials are thoroughly discussed. Moreover, the research needs and future directions towards wastewater resource recovery are highlighted. A sustainable, cyanide-free synthesis of alkyl nitriles via the aerobic oxidative deconstruction of unstrained cycloalkanones with ammonium salts has been developed. Using inexpensive and stable ammonium salts as the nitrogen source, a variety of alkyl nitriles containing a distal carbonyl group were obtained in good yields under visible-light-promoted iron catalysis. This protocol is characterized by mild conditions, abundant and environmentally benign materials, and high atom and step economy with minimal waste generation. The primary mechanism study revealed that 1 O 2 is likely to be involved in this reaction.

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid that causes severe environmental contamination worldwide. Upon exposure to aqueous phases, the As-bearing minerals, such as orpiment (As 2 S 3 ) and realgar (As 4 S 4 ), undergo oxidative dissolution, in which biotic and abiotic activities both contributed significant roles. Consequently, the dissolved As and S are rapidly discharged through water transportation to broader regions and contaminate surrounding areas, especially in aquatic environments. Despite both orpiment and realgar are frequently encountered in carbonate-hosted neutral environments, the microbial-mediated oxidative dissolution of these minerals, however, have been primarily investigated under acidic conditions. Therefore, the current study aimed to elucidate microbial-mediated oxidative dissolution under neutral aquatic conditions. The current study demonstrated that the dissolution of orpiment and realgar is synergistically regulated by abiotic (i.e., specific surface area (SSA) of the mineral) and biotic (i.e., microbial oxidation) factors. The initial dissolution of As(III) and S 2- from minerals is abiotically impacted by SSA, while the microbial oxidation of As(III) and S 2- accelerated the overall dissolution rates of orpiment and realgar. In As-contaminated environments, members of Thiobacillus and Rhizobium were identified as the major populations that mediated oxidative dissolution of orpiment and realgar by DNA-stable isotope probing. Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants that have been globally found in the environment, and have become a focus of intensive management for the Shanghai government in China. Although there are several studies reporting the abundance of microplastics (MPs) in different matrices in Shanghai city, the general data are still limited. This work comprehensively reviews microplastic (MP) pollution in the water, sediment, atmosphere, and soil of Shanghai during 2013-2022. A summary of characteristics such as the abundance, shape, and polymer composition of MPs is presented. Additionally, the pollution trends, traceability, and ecological risks of MPs are analyzed and evaluated. Based on the analytical results, we find that the inland water in Shanghai city is the most contaminated with the highest abundance of MPs at 14.76 × 10 3 particles/m 3 on average, while the abundances of MPs in the external water, inland sediment, external sediment, indoor atmosphere, outdoor atmosphere, inland soil, and external soil are 2.78 × 10 3 particles/m 3 , 0.80 × 10 3 particles/kg, 1.37 × 10 3 particles/kg, 0.03 × 10 3 particles/m 3 , 0.08 × 10 3 particles/m 3 , 0.27 × 10 3 particles/kg, and 0.18 × 10 3 particles/kg, respectively. Polyethylene and polypropylene are the top two detected polymer compositions of MPs. Results of ecological risk assessment using risk index and pollution load index models indicate that the risks of MPs in the water and sediment of the Yangtze Estuary are high. It is noteworthy that the abundances of MPs at the junction site of Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu River as well as in the Yangtze Estuary exhibited an increasing trend between 2017 and 2019. This work contributes to a comprehensive overview of MPs in the environment of Shanghai city during 2013-2022 and provides important data for local governments to develop urgent strategies for the management of MP pollution. Fluorinated compounds are a class of organic substances resistant to degradation. Although zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) has a promising reducing capability, it still fails to degrade fluorine-containing antibiotics (i.e., florfenicol) efficiently. In this study, we applied a simple one-pot pyrolytic approach to synthesize nitrogen-doped biochar supported Fe 0 and zero-valent copper (Cu 0 ) composite (Fe/Cu@NBC) and investigated its performance on florfenicol removal. The results clearly showed that approximately 91.4% of florfenicol in the deionized water was removed by Fe/Cu@NBC within 8 h. As the reaction time was extended to 15 d, the total degradation rate of florfenicol reached 96.6%, in which the defluorination and dechlorination rates were 73.2% and 82.1%, respectively. Both experimental results and density functional theory calculation suggested that ∙OH and ·O 2 - triggered β-fluorine elimination, resulting in defluorination prior to dechlorination. This new finding was distinct from previous viewpoints that defluorination was more difficult to occur than dechlorination. Fe/Cu@NBC also had a favorable performance for removal of florfenicol in surface water. An array of redox-neutral alkylation/cyclization cascade reactions of N -functionalized acrylamides with cycloalkyl hydroperoxides were achieved via the alkoxyl radical-triggered C-C bond cleavage. Through adjusting the radical acceptors on the N atom, a variety of keto-alkylated chain-containing azaheterocycles, including indolo[2,1- a ]isoquinolin-6(5 H )-ones, quinoline-2,4-diones, and pyrido[4,3,2- gh ]phenanthridines were constructed by a one-pot procedure with good yields and excellent functional group tolerance.

Estrogen plays a protective role in colorectal cancer (CRC) and primarily functions through estrogen receptor β (ERβ). However, clinical strategies for CRC therapy associated with ERβ are still under investigation. Our discoveries identified WFDC3 as a tumor suppressor that facilitates estrogen-induced inhibition of metastasis through the ERβ/TGFBR1 signaling axis. WFDC3 interacts with ERβ and increases its protein stability by inhibiting its proteasome-dependent degradation. WFDC3 represses TGFBR1 expression through ERβ-mediated transcription. Blocking TGFβ signaling with galunisertib, a drug used in clinical trials that targets TGFBR1, impaired the migration of CRC cells induced by WFDC3 depletion. Moreover, there was clinical significance to WFDC3 in CRC, as CRC patients with high WFDC3 expression in tumor cells had favorable prognoses. Toilet paper has been reported as one of the major insoluble pollutant components in the influent of wastewater treatment plants. Toilet paper fibers contribute to a large production of sewage sludge, resulting in a high treatment cost and high energy consumption. To find energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environment-friendly technologies for fiber removal and resource recovery from wastewater, a life-cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to analyze the wastewater treatment processes, including a sieving process for removing and recovering suspended solids before the biodegradation units. Based on the LCA results, it was estimated that the sieve screening process saved 8.57% of energy consumption. The construction phase of sieving consumed 1.31% energy cost compared with the operation phase. Environmental impact analysis showed that sieving reduced the impacts of climate change, human toxicity, fossil depletion, and particulate matter formation, which reduced the total normalized environmental impacts by 9.46%. Both organic radicals and organoboron reagents have been broadly investigated, but the combination of them via direct C-H borylation as organic radical building blocks has never been achieved. Herein, a series of organoradical boron reagents, such as TTM-Bpin and TTM-BOH, were synthesized through the key step of C-H borylation of substrate TTM-H ((2,6-dichlorophenyl) bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl) radical for the first time. They are air stable enough to be stored in the solid state for several months under dark conditions, and fully investigated through single crystal analysis, EPR and DFT calculations. Furthermore, they can smoothly work in the standard Suzuki-Miyaura coupling (SMC) reaction with retention of the carbon radical center. Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the common complications after rectal cancer surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the combination of biomarkers for the early prediction of symptomatic AL after surgery., Methods: A prospective cohort study evaluated the serum and peritoneal biomarkers of patients who underwent laparoscopic low anterior resection (Lap LAR) from November 1, 2021, to May 1, 2022. Multivariate-penalized logistic regression was performed to explore the independent biomarker with a P-value <.1, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of the independent biomarkers. A predictive model for symptomatic AL was built based on the independent biomarkers and was visualized with a nomogram. The calibration curve with the concordance index (c-index) was further applied to evaluate the efficacy of the predictive model., Results: A total of 157 patients were included in this study, and 7 (4.5%) were diagnosed with symptomatic AL. C-reactive protein/album ratio (CAR) on postoperative day 1 and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and peritoneal interleukin-6 (IL-6) on postoperative day 3 were proven to be independent predictors for the early prediction of symptomatic AL. The optimal cutoff values of CAR, SII, and peritoneal IL-6 were 1.04, 916.99, and 26430.09 pg/ml, respectively. Finally, the nomogram, including these predictors, was established, and the c-index of this nomogram was 0.812, indicating that the nomogram could be used for potential clinical reference., Conclusion: The combination of CAR, SII, and peritoneal IL-6 might contribute to the early prediction of symptomatic AL in patients following Lap LAR. Fluorinated compounds have found widespread applications in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials science. Precise construction of α-difluoromethylene ether (CF 2 - O) moiety in organic molecules is of high demand. Herein, a visible light-promoted reaction protocol for the synthesis of α-difluoromethylene ether from gem -difluorocyclopropane is described. The key ring-opening step is induced by hyperconjugative interaction of cyclopropane with photo-oxidized aromatic rings. This reaction is easy scale-up, and the products bearing a synthetic handle enable their further manipulation.

A concise Fe-catalyzed alkylazidation of α-trifluoromethylalkenes via a C-C bond cleavage/radical addition/azidation cascade is described. This protocol features a broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, and the ability to be performed on a gram scale, thus offering a practical and step-economic approach to the synthetically useful tertiary α-trifluoromethyl azides.

As(III) oxidation-dependent biological nitrogen fixing (As-dependent BNF) bacteria use a novel biogeochemical process observed in tailings recently. However, our understanding of microorganisms responsible for As-dependent BNF is limited and whether such a process occurs in As-contaminated soils is still unknown. In this study, two contrasting types of soils (surface soils versus river sediments) heavily contaminated by As were selected to study the occurrence of As-dependent BNF. BNF was observed in sediments and soils amended with As(III), whereas no apparent BNF was found in the cultures without As(III). The increased abundances of the nitrogenase gene (nifH) and As(III) oxidation gene (aioA) suggest that an As-dependent BNF process was catalyzed by microorganisms harboring nifH and aioA. In addition, DNA-SIP demonstrated that Thiobacillus spp. and Anaeromyxobacter spp. were putative As-dependent BNF bacteria in As-contaminated soils and sediments, respectively. Metagenomic analysis further suggested that these taxa contained genes responsible for BNF, As(III) oxidation, and CO 2 fixation, demonstrating their capability for serving as As-dependent BNF. These results indicated the occurrence of As-dependent BNF in various As-contaminated habitats. Background: This study aimed to explore the role of postoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in predicting symptomatic anastomotic leakage in patients who underwent laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed data of patients who underwent laparoscopic low anterior resection from May 2009 to May 2019. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to evaluate the cut-off values with the best predictive efficacy of a symptomatic anastomotic leakage. In addition, a propensity score-matched analysis was performed by considering all covariate variables, and 61 patients with or without symptomatic anastomotic leakage were included in the analysis. Results: The present study included 306 patients; of these, 17 (5.56%) developed symptomatic anastomotic leakage after surgery. On postoperative day 5, compared with patients without symptomatic anastomotic leakage, those with leakage had significantly higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte levels. Notably, a neutrophil-to-lymphocyte cut-off score of 6.54 indicated the best area under the curve of 0.818 (95% confidence interval: 0.697−0.940, p < 0.001) in predicting symptomatic anastomotic leakage, with a sensitivity and specificity of 76.5% and 79.4%, respectively. Conclusions: Although evidence for the predictive role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is accumulating, it remains inconclusive. In addition, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte levels should be considered a predictive biomarker for symptomatic anastomotic leakage; however, it can more accurately be viewed as an adjunct that helps increase the clinical suspicion of emerging symptomatic anastomotic leakage.

Remediation of arsenic (As)-contaminated wastewater by treatment wetlands (TWs) remains a technological challenge due to the low As adsorption capacity of wetland substrates and the release of adsorbed As to pore water. This study investigated the feasibility of using immobile iron-rich particles (IIRP) to promote As retention and to regulate As biotransformation in TWs. Iron-rich particles prepared were immobilized in the interspace of a gravel substrate. TWs with IIRP amendment (IIRP-TWs) achieved a stable As removal efficiency of 63 ± 4% over 300 days, while no As removal or release was observed in TWs without IIRP after 180 days of continuous operation. IIRP amendment provided additional adsorption sites and increased the stability of adsorbed As due to the strong binding affinity between As and Fe oxides. Microbially mediated As(III) oxidation was intensified by iron-rich particles in the anaerobic bottom layer of IIRP-TWs. Myxococcus and Fimbriimonadaceae were identified as As(III) oxidizers. Further, metagenomic binning suggested that these two bacterial taxa may have the capability for anaerobic As(III) oxidation. Overall, this study demonstrated that abiotic and biotic effects of IIRP contribute to As retention in TWs and provided insights into the role of IIRP for the remediation of As contamination.

Microplastic (MP) contamination is a serious global environmental problem. Plastic contamination has attracted extensive attention during the past decades. While physiochemical weathering may influence the properties of MPs, biodegradation by microorganisms could ultimately mineralize plastics into CO 2 . Compared to the well-studied marine ecosystems, the MP biodegradation process in riverine ecosystems, however, is less understood. The current study focuses on the MP biodegradation in one of the world's most plastic contaminated rivers, Pearl River, using micropolyethylene (mPE) as a model substrate. Mineralization of 13 C-labeled mPE into 13 CO 2 provided direct evidence of mPE biodegradation by indigenous microorganisms. Several Actinobacteriota genera were identified as putative mPE degraders. Furthermore, two Mycobacteriaceae isolates related to the putative mPE degraders, Mycobacterium sp. mPE3 and Nocardia sp. mPE12, were retrieved, and their ability to mineralize 13 C-mPE into 13 CO 2 was confirmed. Pangenomic analysis reveals that the genes related to the proposed mPE biodegradation pathway are shared by members of Mycobacteriaceae . While both Mycobacterium and Nocardia are known for their pathogenicity, these populations on the plastisphere in this study were likely nonpathogenic as they lacked virulence factors. The current study provided direct evidence for MP mineralization by indigenous biodegraders and predicted their biodegradation pathway, which may be harnessed to improve bioremediation of MPs in urban rivers.

The formation quantum yields of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs) by irradiated CDOM (in this study, Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter and Upper Mississippi River Natural Organic Matter) decrease with increasing irradiation wavelength. In particular, the formation quantum yields of the excited triplet states of CDOM ( 3 CDOM*) and of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) have an exponentially decreasing trend with wavelength. The • OH wavelength trend is different, because more effective • OH production occurs under UVB irradiation than foreseen by a purely exponential function. We show that the parameter-adjustable Weibull function (which adapts to both exponential and some non-exponential trends) is suitable to fit the mentioned quantum yield data, and it is very useful when CDOM irradiation is carried out under polychromatic lamps as done here. Model calculations suggest that, thanks to the ability of CDOM to also absorb visible radiation, and despite its decreasing quantum yield of • OH generation with increasing wavelength, CDOM would be able to trigger • OH photogeneration in deep waters, to a higher extent than UVB-absorbing nitrate or UVB + UVA-absorbing nitrite., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Vanadium (V) is a transitional metal that poses health risks to exposed humans. Microorganisms play an important role in remediating V contamination by reducing more toxic and mobile vanadate (V(V)) to less toxic and mobile V(IV). In this study, DNA-stable isotope probing (SIP) coupled with metagenomic-binning was used to identify microorganisms responsible for V(V) reduction and determine potential metabolic mechanisms in cultures inoculated with a V-contaminated river sediment. Anaeromyxobacter and Geobacter spp. were identified as putative V(V)-reducing bacteria, while Methanosarcina spp. were identified as putative V(V)-reducing archaea. The bacteria may use the two nitrate reductases NarG and NapA for respiratory V(V) reduction, as has been demonstrated previously for other species. It is proposed that Methanosarcina spp. may reduce V(V) via anaerobic methane oxidation pathways (AOM-V) rather than via respiratory V(V) reduction performed by their bacterial counterparts, as indicated by the presence of genes associated with anaerobic methane oxidation coupled with metal reduction in the metagenome assembled genome (MAG) of Methanosarcina. Briefly, methane may be oxidized through the "reverse methanogenesis" pathway to produce electrons, which may be further captured by V(V) to promote V(V) reduction. More specially, V(V) reduction by members of Methanosarcina may be driven by electron transport (CoMS-SCoB heterodisulfide reductase (HdrDE), F 420 H 2 dehydrogenases (Fpo), and multi-heme c-type cytochrome (MHC)). Nanoscale particles of zero-valent iron were used to form a permeable reactive barrier whose performance in dechlorinating a solution of trichloroethylene was compared with that of a barrier formed from limestone. The iron was combined with kaolin by calcination. The test liquid contained sewage sludge, and also added NH 4 Cl and KH 2 PO 4 . The average removal rates of trichloroethylene and phosphorus over 365 days both exceeded 94%. Chemical oxygen demand was reduced by 92% and ammonium nitrogen by 43.6%. All were significantly greater than the removals with the limestone barrier. The ceramsite barrier retained 85% of its effectiveness even after 365 days of use. Dechloromonas sp. was the main dechlorinating bacterium, but its removal ability is limited. The removal of trichloroethylene in such a barrier mainly depends on reduction by the zero-valent iron and biodegradation. The results show that the prepared ceramsite is stable and effective in removing trichloroethylene from water. To evaluate the measurement method of passive dosemeters for terrestrial gamma radiation measurements. An inter-comparison of passive dosemeters for terrestrial gamma radiation measurements was organized alternately by the Japan Chemical Analysis Center, National Institute for Radiological Protection of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Radiation Monitoring Technical Center of Ministry of Environmental Protection every 2 years. The procedures and exposure conditions of the field-exposure and reference irradiation test were provided by the organizer. During 2019-2020, the En values of Field-1 and Field-2 in three laboratories were lower than 1.0 and assigned 'acceptable' according to inter-comparison criteria. Switchable in situ SO 2 capture and CF 3 migration of enol triflates with peroxyl compounds under iron catalysis are presented. By regulating the structure of peroxides, a variety of keto-functionalized dialkyl sulfones and α-trifluoromethyl ketones were selectively synthesized in good yields under mild conditions.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have received increasing attention due to their widespread presence in diverse environments including wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their potential adverse health effects. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is one of the most detected forms of PFASs in WWTPs. However, there is still a paucity of knowledge about the effect of PFASs on microorganisms of the key component of WWTP, activated sludge. In this study, lab-scale microcosm experiments were established to evaluate the influences of PFOA on activated sludge microbes under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The diversity, structure, and microbe-microbe interaction of microbial community were determined by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and co-occurrence network analysis. After 90 days of exposure to PFOA, activated sludge microbial richness decreased under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Specifically, under aerobic condition, Rhodopseudomonas (mean relative abundance 3.6%), Flavobacterium (2.4%), and Ignavibacterium (6.6%) were enriched in PFOA-spiked activated sludge compared with that in the unspiked sludge (2.6%, 0.1%, and 1.9%, respectively). By contrast, after 90 days of exposure to PFOA, Eubacterium (2.1%), Hyphomicrobium (1.8%), and Methyloversatilis (1.2%) were enriched under anaerobic condition, and more abundant than that in the control sludge (0.4%, 1.5%, and 0.6%, respectively). These genera were the potential PFOA-resistant members. In addition, Azospirillum and Sporomusa were the most connected taxa in PFOA-aerobic and PFOA-anaerobic networks, respectively. Prediction of the functional gene showed that PFOA inhibited some gene expression of sludge microbes, such as transcription, amino acid transport and metabolism, and energy production and conversion. In summary, continued exposure to PFOA induced substantial shifts of the sludge bacterial diversity and composition under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions., (© 2022. Objective: Intracorporeal esophagojejunostomy remains a challenging technique in totally laparoscopic total gastrectomy (TLTG) because of the lack of an established standard anastomosis method. However, π-shaped esophagojejunostomy in TLTG is reportedly safe and feasible. Therefore, we evaluated the short-term surgical outcomes of our modified π-shaped esophagojejunostomy in TLTG., Methods: This study involved patients without neoadjuvant therapy diagnosed with gastric cancer who underwent TLTG by the same surgeon with modified π-shaped esophagojejunostomy from April 2018 to October 2019. Clinicopathologic data were collected and retrospectively analyzed., Results: Forty patients diagnosed with gastric cancer were included. The mean operative time and estimated blood loss were 264.6 ± 56.9 minutes and 68.5 ± 53.3 mL, respectively. Postoperative flatus occurred at 4.6 ± 1.7 days. The mean time to resumption of diet was 7.4 ± 1.7 days postoperatively. One patient was diagnosed with anastomotic leakage and managed with conservative therapy. Pleural effusion was the most common complication, occurring in four (10%) patients. One patient developed intra-abdominal bleeding that required reoperation. Other complications were atrial fibrillation and wound infection. No mortality occurred during the 6-month follow-up., Conclusions: Modified π-shaped esophagojejunostomy is safe and feasible for intracorporeal anastomosis in TLTG and showed favorable surgical outcomes in this study.

Both arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) are primary environmental contaminants that often co-exist at contaminated sites. Though the microbial community compositions of As- and Sb-contaminated sites have been previously described, the changes in microbial community interactions and community functions remain elusive. In the current study, several key metabolic processes, such as As/Sb detoxification and carbon fixation, were enriched under heavily contaminated conditions. Furthermore, the identified keystone taxa, which are associated with the families Nitrosomonadaceae, Pedosphaeraceae, Halieaceae, and Latescibacterota, demonstrated positive correlations with As and Sb concentrations, indicating that they may be resistant to As and Sb toxicities. Accordingly, arsenic resistance-related functions, along with several functions such as carbon fixation, were found to be enriched in heavily contaminated sites. Nitrogen (N) shortage poses a great challenge to the implementation of in situ bioremediation practices in mining-contaminated sites. Diazotrophs can fix atmospheric N 2 into a bioavailable form to plants and microorganisms inhabiting adverse habitats. Increasing numbers of studies mainly focused on the diazotrophic communities in the agroecosystems, while those communities in mining areas are still not well understood. This study compared the variations of diazotrophic communities in composition and interactions in the mining areas with different extents of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) contamination. As and Sb co-contamination increased alpha diversities and the abundance of nifH encoding the dinitrogenase reductase, while inhibited the diazotrophic interactions and substantially changed the composition of communities. Based on the multiple lines of evidence (e.g., the enrichment analysis of diazotrophs, microbe-microbe network, and random forest regression), six diazotrophs (e.g., Sinorhizobium, Dechloromonas, Trichormus, Herbaspirillum, Desmonostoc, and Klebsiella) were identified as keystone taxa. Environment-microbe network and random forest prediction demonstrated that these keystone taxa were highly correlated with the As and Sb contamination fractions. Primary succession in mine tailings is a prerequisite for tailing vegetation. Microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and protists, play an important role in this process in the driving force for improving the nutritional status. Compared to bacteria and fungi, protist populations have rarely been investigated regarding their role in mine tailings, especially for those inhabiting tailings associated with primary succession. Protists are the primary consumers of fungi and bacteria, and their predatory actions promote the release of nutrients immobilized in the microbial biomass, as well as the uptake and turnover of nutrients, affecting the functions of the wider ecosystems. In this study, three different types of mine tailings associated with three successional stages (original tailings, biological crusts, and Miscanthus sinensis grasslands) were selected to characterize the protistan community diversity, structure, and function during primary succession. Some members classified as consumers dominated the network of microbial communities in the tailings, especially in the original bare land tailings. The keystone phototrophs of Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae showed the highest relative abundance in the biological crusts and grassland rhizosphere, respectively. In addition, the co-occurrences between protist and bacterial taxa demonstrated that the proportion of protistan phototrophs gradually increased during primary succession. Further, the metagenomic analysis of protistan metabolic potential showed that abundances of many functional genes associated with photosynthesis increased during the primary succession of tailings. Overall, these results suggest that the primary succession of mine tailings drives the changes observed in the protistan community, and in turn, the protistan phototrophs facilitate the primary succession of tailings. Autophagy plays a crucial role in colorectal cancer (CRC) development. Our previous study suggested that serine/threonine protein kinase 25 (STK25) regulates aerobic glycolysis in CRC cells. Glycolysis modulates cellular autophagy during tumor growth; however, the role of STK25 in autophagy remains unclear. In this study, we found that STK25 expression was decreased in CRC tissues and CRC patients with high STK25 expression had a favorable prognosis. Functional assays suggested that STK25 inhibition promoted autophagy in CRC cells. Overexpression of STK25 exhibited the opposite effects. Moreover, the results of western blot demonstrated that silencing STK25 induced autophagy by activating the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. The increasing use of plastic film mulching has caused the accumulation of plastic film residue in soil. To date, most researches on the plastisphere have focused on bacterial and fungal communities, with few on protistan community, especially in terrestrial ecosystems. To understand plastisphere protistan communities, we collected plastic film residues from plastic-mulching croplands. The plastisphere significantly altered the alpha-diversity, structure, and composition of taxonomic and functional (consumers, phototrophs, and parasites) communities. In both the plastisphere and surrounding soil, although some consumers dominated the protistan community network, while their performance was weakened by mulch application. The ecological networks of the plastisphere community presented higher modularity, less complexity, and a lower proportion of positive connections than the networks of surrounding soil. In addition, the enriched plant pathogens (e.g., Spongospora) and keystone taxa classified as plant pathogens (e.g., Pythium) in the plastisphere imply that plastic film residues may pose a risk to soil health and plant performance. Neutral-based processes dominated the assembly of the plastisphere protistan communities, whereas niche-based processes governed the protistan community assembly of surrounding soil. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are chronic neurological disorders associated with cognitive or motor dysfunction. As a common spice, Zingiber officinale Roscoe has been used as a medicine to treat a variety of NDDs. However, at the molecular level, the mechanisms of Z. officinale in treating of NDDs have not been deeply investigated. In this study, network pharmacology method, molecular docking, Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were used to predict the mechanisms of Z. officinale in the treatment of NDDs. After a series of biological information analyses, five core targets were obtained, including heme oxygenase 1 (HMOX1), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), catechol-O-methyl-transferase (COMT), and metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5). Compounds 75, 68, 46, 67, 69, 49, 66, 50, 34, and 64 were identified as the main components of Z. officinale in the treatment of NDDs. The crucial pathways mainly include neuroactive ligand-receptor signaling pathways, cyclic adenosine monophosphate signaling pathways, dopamine synaptic signaling pathways, and so on. Besides, in vitro experiments by AChE inhibitory activities assay and neuroprotective activities against H 2 O 2 -induced injury in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells validated the reliability of the results of network analysis. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Zingiber officinale Roscoe is widely used as a traditional spice and herbal medicine. It contains a number of active ingredients, which have shown activities on anti-neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). In this paper, the potential mechanism of Z. officinale in the treatment of NDDs is explored through network pharmacology, and it was verified by in vitro experiments. The mechanism was not only clarified at the system level but also proved to be effective at the biological level. The extensive application of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) causes their frequent detection in various environments. In this work, two typical PFASs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), are selected to investigate their effects on soil microorganisms. Microbial community structure and microbe-microbe relationships were investigated by high-throughput sequencing and co-occurrence network analysis. Under 90 days of exposure, the alpha-diversity of soil microbial communities was increased with the PFOS treatment, followed by the PFOA treatment. The exposure of PFASs substantially changed the compositions of soil microbial communities, leading to the enrichment of more PFASs-tolerant bacteria, such as Proteobacteria, Burkholderiales, and Rhodocyclales. Comparative co-occurrence networks were constructed to investigate the microbe-microbe interactions under different PFASs treatments. The majority of nodes in the PFOA and PFOS networks were associated with the genus Azospirillum and Hydrogenophaga, respectively. The LEfSe analysis further identified a set of biomarkers in the soil microbial communities, such as Azospirillum, Methyloversatilis, Hydrogenophaga, Pseudoxanthomonas, and Fusibacter. The relative abundances of these biomarkers were also changed by different PFASs treatments. Functional gene prediction suggested that the microbial metabolism processes, such as nucleotide transport and metabolism, cell motility, carbohydrate transport and metabolism, energy production and conversion, and secondary metabolites biosynthesis transport and catabolism, might be inhibited under PFAS exposure, which may further affect soil ecological services., (© 2021. Genomic instability plays a key role in the initiation and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). Although cancer driver genes in CRC have been well characterized, identifying novel genes associated with carcinogenesis and treatment remains challenging because of tumor heterogeneity. Here, we analyzed the genomic alterations of 45 samples from CRC patients in northern China by whole-exome sequencing. In addition to the identification of six well-known CRC driver genes (APC, TP53, KRAS, FBXW7, PIK3CA, and PABPC), two tumor-related genes (MTCH2 and HSPA6) were detected, along with RRP7A and GXYLT1, which have not been previously linked to cancer. GXYLT1 was mutated in 40% (18/45) of the samples in our cohort. Functionally, GXYLT1 promoted migration and invasion in vitro and metastasis in vivo, while the GXYLT1 S212* mutant induced significantly greater effect. Furthermore, both GXYLT1 and GXYLT1 S212* interacted with ERK2. GXYLT1 induced metastasis via a mechanism involving the Notch and MAPK pathways, whereas the GXYLT1 S212* mutant mainly promoted metastasis by activating the MAPK pathway. We propose that GXYLT1 acts as a novel metastasis-associated driver gene and GXYLT1 S212* might serve as a potential indicator for therapies targeting the MAPK pathway in CRC., (© 2022. Objective. A P300-brain computer interface (P300-BCI) conveys a subject's intention through recognition of their event-related potentials (ERPs). However, in the case of visual stimuli, its performance depends strongly on eye gaze. When eye movement is impaired, it becomes difficult to focus attention on a target stimulus, and the quality of the ERP declines greatly, thereby affecting recognition efficiency. Approach. In this paper, the expectancy wave (E-wave) is proposed to improve signal quality and thereby improve identification of visual targets under the covert attention. The stimuli of the P300-BCI described here are presented in a fixed sequence, so the subjects can predict the next target stimulus and establish a stable expectancy effect of the target stimulus through training. Features from the E-wave that occurred 0 ∼ 300 ms before a stimulus were added to the post-stimulus ERP components for intention recognition. Main results. Comparisons of ten healthy subjects before and after training demonstrated that the expectancy wave generated before target stimulus could be used with the P300 component to improve character recognition accuracy (CRA) from 85% to 92.4%. In addition, CRA using only the expectancy component can reach 68.2%, which is significantly greater than random probability (16.7%). The results of this study indicate that the expectancy wave can be used to improve recognition efficiency for a gaze-independent P300-BCI, and that training contributes to induction and recognition of the potential. Background: Some high-quality clinical trials have proven the efficacy and safety of perioperative and postoperative S-1 with oxaliplatin (peri-SOX and post-SOX) for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) undergoing D2 gastrectomy. However, little is known about how health-related quality of life (HRQOL) changes over time in patients receiving peri-SOX or post-SOX chemotherapy., Methods: A prospective observational cohort (NCT04408859) identified 151 eligible patients with LAGC who underwent D2 gastrectomy with at least six cycles of peri-SOX or post-SOX chemotherapy from 2018 to 2020. HRQOL was assessed using the EROTC QLQ-C30 and its gastric module, QLQ-STO22, at indicated measurements, including the baseline, 1st, 3rd, 6th and 12th month after initiation of therapy. Baseline characteristics, therapeutic effects, and longitudinal HRQOL were compared between the peri-SOX and post-SOX groups after propensity score matching. HRQOL changes over time and the risk factors for scales with severe deterioration were further analyzed., Results: No statistically significant differences in longitudinal HRQOL were observed between patients in the peri-SOX and post-SOX groups, with comparable surgical outcomes and adverse chemotherapy events. Scales of social functioning, abnormal taste, and anxiety improved earlier in the peri-SOX group than in the post-SOX group. Score changes in both groups indicated that general deterioration and slower recovery usually occurred in the scales of physical, social, and role functioning, as well as symptoms of fatigue, reflux, diarrhea, and anxiety., Conclusion: Peri-SOX showed a longitudinal HRQOL comparable to post-SOX in patients with LAGC who underwent D2 gastrectomy. Background: The incidence of toxic diffuse goiter (Graves' disease) is higher in adolescents and preschool-aged children, with an upward trend. The incidence at 6-13 years of age is approximately 11.0%, and the incidences in men and women are 7.8% and 14.3%, respectively., Aim: To explore the clinical effect of methimazole combined with selenium in the treatment of toxic diffuse goiter (Graves' disease) in children and its effect on serum anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TRAb) and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb)., Methods: A total of 103 children with Graves' disease treated in our hospital from January 2018 to June 2021 were divided into a traditional group and a combined group (15-20 mg methimazole orally given to children) and a combined group (50 µg selenium added on the basis of traditional treatment) according to different treatment methods to explore the therapeutic effects of the two methods and to observe the changes in thyroid volume and serum TRAb, TPOAb, free thyroxine (FT4) and inflammatory factor levels before and after treatment. The time taken for FT4 to return to normal was compared between the two groups., Results: Treatment was significantly more effective in the combined group than in the traditional group ( P < 0.05). The thyroid volumes of the children in the two groups was measured before and after treatment. Thyroid volume decreased significantly after treatment in both groups, and the thyroid volume was significantly lower in the combined group than in the traditional group ( P < 0.05). The serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, TRAb, TPOAb and FT4 in the two groups were detected before and after treatment. The levels of IL-6, IL-8, TRAb, TPOAb and FT4 were significantly lower in the combined group than in the traditional group ( P < 0.05). Follow-up of the children in the two groups showed that compared with the traditional group, it took less time for children in the combined group to return to the normal level ( P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Methimazole combined with selenium can effectively treat Graves' disease in children, reduce the expression of TRAb, TPOAb, FT4 and inflammatory factors, and improve the curative effect. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been demonstrated to influence the chemoresistance of colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, the study is designed to investigate the regulatory function and mechanism of Taurine up-regulated gene 1 (TUG1) in the cisplatin resistance of CRC. qRT-PCR checked the expressions of TUG1, Insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 2 (IGF2BP2), and miR-195-5p in CRC tissues and cells. The TUG1 or miR-195-5p overexpression model was engineered in CRC cells, followed by treatment with DDP or the autophagy inhibitor (Chloroquine, CQ). CCK8 (Cell Counting Kit-8) and the colony formation experiment monitored cell proliferation. Flow cytometry examined apoptosis, Transwell tracked migration and invasion, and Western blot ascertained the protein profiles of autophagy proteins (LC3I/LC3II and Beclin1) and the HDGF/DDX5/β-catenin pathway. Dual-luciferase gene reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation confirmed the binding correlation between TUG1 and miR-195-5p and between miR-195-5p and HDGF. Furthermore, in-vivo experiments in nude mice probed the function and mechanism of IGF2BP2 in CRC cell growth. The profiles of TUG1 and IGF2BP2 were elevated in CRC tissues, and IGF2BP2 enhanced TUG1's expression in CRC cells. TUG1 activated autophagy to facilitate CRC cells' resistance to DDP. TUG1 targets miR-195-5p, and miR-195-5p targets HDGF. Overexpression of miR-195-5p abated the cancer-promoting function of TUG1 and curbed the profile of the HDGF/DDX5/β-catenin axis. TUG1 stabilized by IGF2BP2 boosted CRC cell proliferation, migration, migration, and autophagy via the miR-195-5p/HDGF/DDX5/β-catenin axis, hence enhancing CRC cell's resistance to DDP.

The relative abundance of Acidobacteriia correlated positively with the concentrations of arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and other metals, suggesting their adaptation of the metal-rich environments. Metagenomic binning reconstructed 29 high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) associated with Acidobacteriia, providing an opportunity to study their metabolic potentials. These MAGs contained genes to transform As, Hg and Cr through oxidation, reduction, efflux and demethylation, suggesting the potential of Acidobacteriia to transform such metal(loid)s. Additionally, genes associated with alleviation of acidic and metal stress were also detected in these MAGs. Acidobacteriia may have the capabilities to resist or transform metal(loid)s in acidic metal-contaminated sites. Moreover, these genes encoding metal transformation could be also identified in the Acidobacteriia-associated MAGs from five additional metal-contaminated sites across Southwest China, as well as Acidobacteriia-associated reference genomes from the NCBI database, suggesting that the capability of metal transformation may be widespread among Acidobacteriia members. 1,2-Dicarbofunctionalization of alkenes represents an appealing strategy for chemical bond formation in organic synthesis, which could enable the rapid construction of molecular complexity from simple and readily available starting materials by incorporating two functional groups onto a carbon-carbon double bond in one step. In this field, the dicarbofunctionalization of alkenes with different alkyl radicals in a controlled manner represents an elegant and versatile strategy to access structurally diverse functionalized alkanes, which have witnessed significant progress over the last five years. Due to the importance of alkyl radicals in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, this review provides a comprehensive perspective on the development of alkyl radical precursors including electrophilic precursors such as alkyl halides, alkyl peroxides, alkyl NHP esters, cycloketone oxime esters, and Katritzky pyridinium salts, and nucleophilic precursors such as alkyl acids, alkyl oxalates, alkylborates, alkylsilicates, and unactivated hydrocarbons, which generate alkyl radicals by photocatalysis or transition metal catalysis to engage in dicarbofunctionalization under oxidative reaction conditions, redox-neutral conditions, or reductive conditions. The mechanisms of these dicarbofunctionalization reactions have also been discussed in detail.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) system represents one of the most unfavorable habitats for microorganisms due to its low pH and high concentrations of metals. Compared to bacteria and fungi, our understanding regarding the response of soil protozoa to such extremely acidic environments remains limited. This study characterized the structures of protozoan communities inhabiting a terrace heavily contaminated by AMD. The sharp environmental gradient of this terrace was generated by annual flooding from an AMD lake located below, which provided a natural setting to unravel the environment-protozoa interactions. Previously unrecognized protozoa, such as Apicomplexa and Euglenozoa, dominated the extremely acidic soils, rather than the commonly recognized members (e.g., Ciliophora and Cercozoa). pH was the most important factor regulating the abundance of protozoan taxa. Metagenomic analysis of protozoan metabolic potential showed that many functional genes encoding for the alleviation of acid stress and various metabolic pathways were enriched, which may facilitate the survival and adaptation of protozoa to acidic environments. In addition, numerous co-occurrences between protozoa and bacterial or fungal taxa were observed, suggesting shared environmental preferences or potential bio-interactions among them. Uranium extraction and recovery play a critical role in guaranteeing the sustainable nuclear energy supply and protecting the environmental safety. The ideal uranium sorbents possess high adsorption capacity, excellent selectivity and reusability, as well as outstanding antimicrobial property, which are greatly desired for the real application of uranium extraction from seawater. To address this challenge, a novel magnetic core-shell adsorbent was designed and fabricated by a facile method. The obtained amidoximed Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 particles (Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 -AO) achieved equilibrium in 2 h and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir model is 217.0 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. Meanwhile, the Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 -AO exhibited great selectivity when competitive metal ions and anions coexisted. In addition, the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 -AO could be conveniently separated and collected by an external magnetic field, the regeneration efficiency maintained at 78.5% even after ten adsorption-desorption cycles. In natural seawater, the uranium uptake reached 87.5 μg/g in 33 days. Furthermore, the TiO 2 contained adsorbent showed effective photo induced bactericidal properties against both E. coli and S. aureus.
