The Anthropocene exerts various pressures and influences on the stability and function of the Earth's ecosystems. However, our understanding of how the microbiome responds in form and function to these disturbances is still limited, particularly when considering the phyllosphere, which represents one of the largest microbial reservoirs in the terrestrial ecosystem. In this study, we comprehensively characterized tree phyllosphere bacteria and associated nutrient-cycling genes in natural, rural, suburban, and urban habitats in China. Results revealed that phyllosphere bacterial community diversity, richness, stability, and composition heterogeneity were greatest at the most disturbed sites. Stochastic processes primarily governed the assembly of phyllosphere bacterial communities, although the role of deterministic processes (environmental selection) in shaping these communities gradually increased as we moved from rural to urban sites. Our findings also suggest that human disturbance is associated with the reduced influence of drift as increasingly layered environmental filters deterministically constrain phyllosphere bacterial communities. The intensification of human activity was mirrored in changes in functional gene expression within the phyllosphere microbiome, resulting in enhanced gene abundance, diversity, and compositional variation in highly human-driven disturbed environments. Furthermore, we found that while the relative proportion of core microbial taxa decreased in disturbed habitats, a core set of microbial taxa shaped the distributional characteristics of both microbiomes and functional genes at all levels of disturbance. Wetlands serve as crucial habitats for diverse bird species, playing a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem. Geographical location, climate, hydrology, and vegetation composition of wetlands determine the diversity of birds. This study investigated species richness, seasonal diversity, and composition of wetland birds in three prominent water bodies of western Nepal, namely Ghodaghodi, Rani, and Jokhar lakes, from 2021 to 2022 in summer and winter using the point count method. We observed 59 wetland bird species across three wetlands, where both the richness and diversity were significantly higher in the winter. Paired t-tests revealed significant seasonal differences ( p  < 0.001) in diversity, species richness, and abundance at both Ghodaghodi and Rani lakes. The highest species richness was observed at Ghodaghodi ( n  = 58), reflecting its significance as a vital bird habitat. In contrast, diversity was higher in Rani Lake during both seasons (Winter H  = 2.98, Summer H  = 2.79). NMDS followed by ANISOM test also showed that bird community structure varies across lakes and seasons. Indicator species analysis showed that out of 59 species, 26 species are associated with one or different sites, whereas 18 of them are associated with the summer or winter season. We observed the Anatidae family with the highest relative diversity (RDI = 28.81%) and reported 1 globally vulnerable species and 7 globally near-threatened species. While in Jokhar Lake, the abundance does not vary between the seasons. This study revealed substantial differences in bird species across seasons and lakes showing that each wetland offers a distinct ecological niche for bird species. The findings reinstate the importance of these wetlands as crucial habitats for the diversity of birds and species composition. Background: Accurate identification of pathologic grade before operation is helpful for guiding clinical treatment decisions and improving the prognosis for soft tissue sarcoma (STS)., Purpose: To construct and assess a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based radiomics nomogram incorporating intratumoral habitats (subregions of clusters of voxels containing similar features) and peritumoral features for the preoperative prediction of the pathological grade of STS., Methods: The MRI data of 145 patients with STS (74 low-grade and 71 high-grade) from 4 hospitals were retrospectively collected, including enhanced T1-weighted and fat-suppressed-T2-weighted sequences. The patients were divided into training cohort (n = 102) and validation cohort (n = 43). K-means clustering was used to divide intratumoral voxels into three habitats according to signal intensity. A number of radiomics features were extracted from tumor-related regions to construct radiomics prediction signatures for seven subgroups. Logistic regression analysis identified peritumoral edema as an independent risk factor. A nomogram was created by merging the best radiomics signature with the peritumoral edema. We evaluated the performance and clinical value of the model using area under the curve (AUC), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis., Results: A multi-layer perceptron classifier model based on intratumoral habitats and peritumoral features combined gave the best radiomics signature, with an AUC of 0.856 for the validation cohort. The AUC of the nomogram in the validation cohort was 0.868, which was superior to the radiomics signature and the clinical model established by peritumoral edema. In this brief article, the green toad ( Bufotes sitibundus ) and the Levant water frog ( Pelophylax bedriagae ) were compared to better understand the adaptations needed by amphibians, specifically the green toad, to survive in arid regions and to inhabit a wide range of habitats. The information mainly comes from data gathered in Israel, a nation experiencing a shift from Mediterranean to desert ecosystems where both amphibian species can be found. Using these data, a qualitative model is put forward that showcases the differences between these two amphibians and illustrates how the green toad has adapted to arid environments. For instance, green toads travel to breeding and spawning sites during the rainy season. During this journey, they often have to cross roads, which puts them at risk of being hit by vehicles. The main distinction between the green toad and the water frog is that the green toad moves from land environments to water, while the water frog stays in its aquatic habitat for its entire life cycle.

Rationale and Objectives: Accurate assessment of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in invasive breast cancer (IBC) plays a pivotal role in tailoring personalized treatment plans. This study aimed to investigate habitats-based spatial distributions to quantitatively measure tumor heterogeneity on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and assess their predictive capability for LVI in patients with IBC., Materials and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we consecutively enrolled 241 women diagnosed with IBC between July 2020 and July 2023 and who had 1.5 T/T1-weighted images, fat-suppressed T2-weighted images, and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI. Habitats-based spatial distributions were derived from the gross tumor volume (GTV) and gross tumor volume plus peritumoral volume (GPTV). GTV&#95;habitats and GPTV&#95;habitats were generated through sub-region segmentation, and their performances were compared. Subsequently, a combined nomogram was developed by integrating relevant spatial distributions with the identified MR morphological characteristics. Diagnostic performance was compared using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and decision curve analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05., Results: GPTV&#95;habitats exhibited superior performance compared to GTV&#95;habitats. Consequently, the GPTV&#95;habitats, diffusion-weighted imaging rim signs, and peritumoral edema were integrated to formulate the combined nomogram. Compared to other small mammals, shrews are understudied due to their limited impact on agriculture, lower biomedical importance, and difficulty to study. Based on trapping data from 1975-2023, we investigated changes in Lithuanian shrews ( Sorex araneus , Sorex minutus , Neomys fodiens , and Neomys milleri ) over six decades. We analyzed the relative abundance of shrews and the proportion of their species within small mammal communities to assess temporal patterns and distribution in major habitat types. The first main finding was the confirmation of a decrease in S. araneus abundance in the 2020s compared to the 1990s and 2010s. The species proportion in 2020s was lower than in the 1970s-2000s; the decrease started in the 1980s and accelerated in the 2000s. Abundances and proportions of S. minutus and N. fodiens showed no significant trend. The abundance of N. fodiens was very low. The relative abundances and proportions of Sorex species were highest in commensal (human-related) and mixed (including forest, wetland, and meadow) habitats. Shrews were underrepresented in agricultural habitats, with the numbers of both S. araneus and S. minutus 4.1 times lower than expected. While the presence of S. minutus in commensal habitats could be explained by their diet specificity, the capture of N. fodiens and N. milleri in commensal habitats is a novel feature of their ecology.

Gut microbiota is related to host fitness, and influenced by geographical locations and habitats. Pomacea canaliculata is a malignant invasive alien snail that threatens agricultural production and ecosystem functions worldwide. Clarifying the general rules of the gut microbial community structure and function of the snails in different geographical locations and habitats is of great significance for understanding their invasion at different spatial scales. This study used high-throughput sequencing technology to compare and analyze the differences in community structure and function of gut microbiota in P. canaliculata from five geographical locations (Liuzhou, Yulin, Nanning, Wuzhou, and Hezhou) and three different habitats (pond, paddy field, and ditch) in Guangxi Province. The results showed that intestinal microbial alpha diversity of P. canaliculata was higher in Liuzhou, Yulin, lower in Nanning, Wuzhou, Hezhou, and higher in ponds compared with paddy fields and ditches. The dominant phyla of gut microbiota in snails were Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and the dominant genus was Lactococcus . The community structure of gut microbiota in snails varied significantly across different geographical locations and habitats, and the phyla Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria had significantly higher relative abundance in snails collected from Nanning and Yulin, respectively. Moreover, the relative abundance of gut functional microbiota associated with human disease in P. canaliculata was significantly affected by geographical locations and habitats, and with the highest abundance in ponds. However, the relative abundance of functional microbiota related to metabolism, genetic information processing, organizational system, environmental information processing, and cellular processes were only significantly affected by geographical locations. Introduction: Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi that is transmitted mainly by the feces of infected Triatomines. In Ecuador the main vector is Rhodnius ecuadoriensis which is distributed in several provinces of the country. More than 40% of these insects in the wild have T. cruzi as part of their intestinal microbiota. For this reason, the objective of this research was to characterize the intestinal bacterial microbiota of R. ecuadoriensis ., Methods: The methodology used was based on the DNA extraction of the intestinal contents from the wild collected insects (adults and nymphs V), as well as the insects maintained at the insectary of the CISeAL. Finally, the samples were analyzed by metagenomics extensions based on the different selected criteria., Results: The intestinal microbiota of R. ecuadoriensis presented a marked divergence between laboratory-raised and wild collected insects. This difference was observed in all stages and was similar between insects from Loja and Manabí. Background: Malaria is more prevalent in rural areas due to fewer mosquito breeding habitats in urban settings. However, urban factors such as irrigated farming, open sewers, and discarded containers create mosquito breeding sites. This study investigates the diversity and distribution of larval habitats and the impact of physicochemical characteristics on the presence and density of Anopheles gambiae s.l. larvae in Accra, Ghana., Methods: Larval surveys and collections were conducted at fifteen locations in Accra, divided into five categories: Irrigated Urban Farming (IUF), Lower Socioeconomic Status (LS), Middle Socioeconomic Status (MS), High Socioeconomic Status (HS), and Peri-urban (PU) areas. Physicochemical parameters were measured, and species identification was performed using morphological and molecular methods., Results: A total of 727 breeding habitats were identified, with 65.34% (475/727) positive for Anopheles larvae. Drainage ditches were the most common habitat type (48.21%, 229/475). The highest abundance of An. gambiae s.l. was found in IUF sites (6,244/22,919), especially during the rainy season (77.01%, 17,650/22,919; R 2 = 3.46, P = 0.000). Polluted habitats, including household effluents, had higher ammonium levels (3.4 mg/L NH -N) compared to unpolluted ones (1.3 mg/L NH -N). Other distinguishing parameters included dissolved oxygen (34% vs 52.9%), conductivity (5106 μS/cm vs 2049 μS/cm), and total dissolved solids (3181 mg/L vs 1255 mg/L). The predominant malaria vector was An. coluzzii (54.4%, 368/677). Additionally, the invasive An. stephensi, previously unreported in Ghana, was detected., Conclusion: Malaria vectors breed in diverse and often polluted urban habitats, with high larval densities in urban agricultural areas. The ecological importance of macrophytes is well known and reflected in nature protection law, for example, as a key biological quality element. However, the socio-economic role, such as the impact of macrophyte presence on recreational activities, is often overlooked. The purpose of this study was to assess the human benefits (or ecosystem services) provided by macrophytes. We developed a list of 25 macrophyte ecosystem services and 79 assessment indicators based on expert knowledge and literature data. First, hypothetical scenarios of coastal lagoons were developed to assess the impact of different ecological states (i.e., macrophyte coverage) and management measures (i.e., fisheries) on the ecosystem service provision. Scenario assessments were carried out by stakeholder workshops and literature search. Second, the ecosystem service potential of submerged and emergent macrophyte habitats were assessed by macrophyte experts and literature data. Results showed that cultural services are most important in terms of the overall actual provision of ecosystem services (scenario assessment) but also showing highest potential of the hypothetical ecosystem service provision (habitat assessment). Highest overall potential is shown for reeds and tall forb communities (83 out of maximum 125), followed by seagrass beds (71) and seaweed communities (61). Native ants have long been considered for their potential to suppress the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), a highly invasive and destructive species. However, the knowledge in this field is limited to behavioral observations of a few related native ants. In this study, by setting up a series of ant combinations of three native ants, i.e., Monomorium chinense Santschi, the robust crazy ant Nylanderia bourbonica Forel, and Iridomyrmex anceps Roger, with S. invicta , we observed the aggression levels and mortality rates. Using baited vials, we also investigated the abundance of native ants in four types of habitats in Eastern China that are preferred by S. invicta (woodland, green belts on roadsides, grassland, and farmland), as well as their seasonal abundance when co-existing with S. invicta and their spatial distribution before and after control of S. invicta . We found that M. chinense and N. bourbonica show a degree of aggression towards S. invicta and can kill substantial proportions of S. invicta under laboratory conditions, but I. anceps does not. Both M. chinense and N. bourbonica can occur in each type of habitat investigated and are more abundant in green belts (particularly lawns with turf) and grasslands relative to other habitats. In grasslands with S. invicta , M. chinense maintained a low density before early July; however, its abundance increased thereafter and reached a peak in September. N. bourbonica also had a low density early in the season and increased steadily from April. Its abundance began to decrease substantially from November. In grasslands invaded by S. invicta , both M. chinense and N. bourbonica were restricted to sites close to the margins before S. invicta was controlled; however, they spread to a larger range within a few weeks after control of S. invicta . In conclusion, M. chinense and N. bourbonica have the potential to suppress S. invicta invasion in habitats that are abundant with these two native ants.

The Palaearctic species of Aphodius Hellwig, 1798, subgenus Liothorax Motschulsky, 1860 are revised using a combination of chromosome analysis, molecular phylogenetics and morphological statistical analysis. Sixteen species are recognised, one of which is shown to comprise two subspecies. Based mainly on the morphology of the aedeagal endophallus and the phylogenetic analysis, they are placed in two groups: the. niger group, apparently monophyletic, comprising Aphodius (Liothorax) niger Illiger, 1798, A. Species loss is highly scale-dependent, following the species-area relationship. We analysed spatio-temporal patterns of species' extirpation on a multitaxonomic level using Berlin, the capital city of Germany. Berlin is one of the largest cities in Europe and has experienced a strong urbanisation trend since the late nineteenth century. We expected species' extirpation to be exceptionally high due to the long history of urbanisation. Analysing 37 regional Red Lists of Threatened Plants, Animals and Fungi of Berlin (covering 9498 species), we found that 16% of species were extirpated, a rate 5.9 times higher than at the German scale and 47.1 times higher than at the European scale. Species' extirpation in Berlin is comparable to that of another German city with a similarly broad taxonomic coverage, but much higher than in regional areas with less human impact. The documentation of species' extirpation started in the eighteenth century and is well documented for the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We found an average annual extirpation of 3.6 species in the nineteenth century, 9.6 species in the twentieth century and the same number of extirpated species as in the nineteenth century were documented in the twenty-first century, despite the much shorter time period. Our results showed that species' extirpation is higher at small than on large spatial scales, and might be negatively influenced by urbanisation, with different effects on different taxonomic groups and habitats. Over time, we found that species' extirpation is highest during periods of high human alterations and is negatively affected by the number of people living in the city. But, there is still a lack of data to decouple the size of the area and the human impact of urbanisation. The mortality of organisms exposed to toxicants has been attributed to either stochastic processes or individual tolerance (IT), leading to the stochastic death (SD) and IT models. While the IT model follows the principles of natural selection, the relevance of the SD model has been debated. To clarify why the idea of stochastic mortality has found its way into ecotoxicology, we investigated the mortality of Poecilus cupreus (Linnaeus, 1758) beetles from pesticide-treated oilseed rape (OSR) fields and unsprayed meadows, subjected to repeated insecticide treatments. We analyzed the mortality with the Kaplan-Meier estimator and general unified threshold model for survival (GUTS), which integrates SD and IT assumptions. The beetles were exposed three times, ca. monthly, to the same dose of Proteus 110 OD insecticide containing thiacloprid and deltamethrin, commonly used in the OSR fields. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the mortality of beetles from meadows was much higher after the first treatment than after the next two, indicating the IT model. Beetles from the OSR displayed approximately constant mortality after the first and second treatments, consistent with the SD model. GUTS analysis did not conclusively identify the better model, with the IT being marginally better for beetles from meadows and the SD better for beetles from OSR fields.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) represent an emerging health concern due to their escalating infections worldwide. Although drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) have been considered as NTM reservoirs and a potential infection route, NTM community at the species level remain largely elusive in DWDSs. This study employed high-throughput sequencing coupled with qPCR to profile NTM community and estimate their abundances at the species level in water and biofilm samples in four DWDSs using three different disinfectants (i.e. free chlorine, chloramine and chlorine dioxide). Results demonstrated the dominance of Mycobacterium paragordonae and Mycobacterium mucogenicum in both biofilm and water across four DWDSs, whereas Mycobacterium abscessus and Mycobacterium chelonae, the two clinically significant species, exhibited low abundance but high prevalence. Comparable NTM community was observed in biofilm across these four DWDSs. Distinct separation of NTM community between SH-chloramine DWDSs water and other DWDSs highlighted the selective pressure of chloramine on NTM community. Furthermore, the research revealed that biofilm and water exhibited distinct NTM community structures, with biofilm harboring more diverse NTM community. Certain NTM species displayed a preference for biofilm, such as Mycobacterium gordonae, while others, like Mycobacterium mucogenicum, were more abundant in water samples (P < 0.05). In terms of NTM community assembly, stochastic processes dominated biofilm, while comparable role of stochastic and deterministic processes was observed in water. In conclusion, this study offers a pioneering and comprehensive insight into the dynamics and assembly mechanisms of NTM community within four DWDSs treated with three distinct disinfectants. Dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE) imaging is a valuable sequence of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). A DCE sequence enhances the vasculature and complements T2-weighted (T2W) and Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), allowing early detection of prostate cancer. However, DCE assessment has remained primarily qualitative. The study proposes quantifying DCE characteristics (T1W sequences) using six time-dependent metrics computed on feature transformations (306 radiomic features) of abnormal image regions observed over time. We applied our methodology to prostate cancer patients with the DCE MRI images (n = 25) who underwent prostatectomy with confirmed pathological assessment of the disease using Gleason Score. Regions of abnormality were assessed on the T2W MRI, guided using the whole mount pathology. Preliminary analysis finds over six temporal DCE imaging features obtained on different transformations on the imaging regions showed significant differences compared to the indolent counterpart ( P ≤ 0.05, q ≤ 0.01). We find classifier models using logistic regression formed on DCE features after feature-based transformation (Centre of Mass) had an AUC of 0.89-0.94. While using mean feature-based transformation, the AUC was in the range of 0.71-0.76, estimated using the 0.632 bootstrap cross-validation method and after applying sample balancing using the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE). Our study finds, radiomic transformation of DCE images (T1 sequences) provides better signal standardization. Skin is the largest organ in a mammal body, and it exhibits most significant range of adaptations to different habitats. It is a complex, biological composite structure, consisting of epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissues and is used for the therapeutic application of medical devices to improve healthcare. Extensive studies have been performed on the roles of the skin; however, little is known on its physiological characteristics in relation to body size among different species. The purpose of this study was therefore to evaluate the allometric scaling of skin weight (SW) and thickness (ST) to body weight (BW) in relation to genetics and habitats. Also analysed the relationship of BW to thicknesses of epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissues. This study used 249 adult animals of both sexes, belonging to 144 species, clustered in 18 taxonomic orders and five types of habitats. The animals were obtained from various sources in Japan. SW and BW were weighed, and ST was measured using a calliper followed by data analysis. Results showed that SW and ST were related to BW [log SW = 0.969 × logBW - 0636, adjust. R 2 : 0.975]. The BW increased with increasing skin dermal thickness (y = 0.3916x + 1.5253, adjust. R 2 : 0.6921), slightly with epidermal thickness (y = 0.2495x + 0.3984, adjust. R 2 : 0.3402), but not all with the thickness of subcutaneous tissues (y = 0.1454x + 2.2437, adjust. R 2 : 0.0752). The ratio of SW to BW (SW/BW) distributed over a large range from 0.06 to 0.64 values and varied among animal taxonomic orders and their dwelling habitats. Close relationship of BW to SW/BW was observed in species weighing ≥200 g but not in species weighing <200 g. In conclusion, SW and ST in mammals are determined by BW. To maintain or enhance biodiversity and sea floor integrity, mapping benthic habitats is a mandatory requirement in compliance with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The EU Commission Decision distinguishes between Broad Habitat Types (BHTs) and Other Habitat Types (OHTs). At the regional level, biotopes in the Baltic Sea region are classified according to the HELCOM underwater biotope and habitat classification (HUB). In this study, the habitats and their benthic communities were mapped for the entire German Baltic Sea at a high spatial resolution of 1 km. In two nature conservation areas of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as well as selected focus areas in the coastal waters, the resolution we provide is even more detailed at 50 × 50 m. Hydroacoustic data recording and benthological surveys (using bottom grabs, underwater towing camera technology, and diver sampling) helped identify biotopes in high resolution. Based on these data, together with additional data acquired since 2010 (a total of over 7000 stations and transect sections), we were able to spatially delineate benthic biotopes and their communities via predictive habitat modelling. The results are provided as full-coverage maps each for BHT, OHT, and HUB (9 classes of BHTs, 5 classes of OHTs, and 84 classes of HUB) with a level of spatial detail that does not yet exist for the Baltic Sea, and they form an essential basis for future monitoring, status assessments, and protection and management measures.

The present study aimed to investigate the roles of the physicochemical characteristics of larval habitats in biodiversity and other bionomic factors of mosquitoes in Shiraz. The physical parameters of all habitats were recorded separately. The collected mosquito larvae were identified based on morphological characters. The water samples of larval habitats were analyzed for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD, mg/L), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD, mg/L), pH, alkalinity, turbidity, total hardness (mg/L), Electrical Conductivity (EC, μS/cm), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS, mg/L), Cl2 (mg/L), and water temperature (°C). In addition, three main indices were used for surveying biodiversity. A total of 1229 larvae were collected from April to September 2018 and May to August 2019. Seven medically important mosquito species were identified morphologically. Culex quinquefasciatus and Cx. laticinctus had the highest distribution and abundance. Ecological results showed that the richness and diversity of species were higher and more stable in natural sites than in manmade places. The optimum BOD, COD, alkalinity, TDS, EC, pH, and temperature of water for mosquitoes of the studied areas were 140 mg/L, 360 mg/L, 160 mg/L, 420 mg/L, 840 μS/cm, 8.3, and 24 °C, respectively. Most mosquitoes tended to live in manmade, temporary, and sunny larval habitats with turbid water. The results provided a better understanding of the biology and ecology of mosquitoes as the most important group of disease vectors to humans and animals. It has been widely documented that the complex structure of forest ecosystems supports considerable bryophyte species and functional diversity. In this study, we assessed the diversity, distribution and ecological and phytogeographical features of bryophytes across a gradient of temperate forest types on Mt. Papuk. This is the largest and highest mountain in the lowland, Pannonian part of Croatia, with high geological diversity and various temperate forests covering 95% of the mountain. According to the predominant tree species (oak vs. beech), geological bedrock (calcareous vs. siliceous) and soil reaction (alkaline vs. acidic), 21 study plots were classified into four distinct forest types. In all, 184 bryophyte species (35 liverworts and 149 mosses) were recorded. Although the forest types investigated did not differ significantly with respect to species richness, each was characterized by a considerable number of diagnostic bryophyte species. According to our results, one of the main ecological factors determining the variability of the forest bryophyte composition was geological bedrock and the associated soil reaction. Basiphilous forests developed on carbonate bedrock harbored more thermophilous and nitrophilous bryophytes and were characterized by southern-temperate and Mediterranean-Atlantic biogeographic elements. In contrast, acidophilous forests growing on silicate bedrock were characterized by wide-boreal and boreo-arctic-montane elements, i.e., bryophytes indicating cooler habitats and nitrogen-deficient soils. Based on the results, we hypothesized that the main latitudinal biogeographic distinction between southern and northern biogeographic elements is driven more by geological substrate than by the main tree species in forest communities. The present study confirmed previous findings that bryophytes are good and specific habitat indicators and show associations with different forest types, which can help to understand the complexity, ecological microconditions and biogeographic characteristics of forest communities.

An integrative data system for monitoring the biota of the Mediterranean waters of Israel as well as selected records from adjacent Levantine basin regions is presented here, aimed at providing data and research tools for long-term bio-geographic and ecological studies and more important, providing background data for assisting governmental regulators to establish educated habitat-oriented environmental policy. The system relies on the geographic information system (GIS) online map-based platform and contains at present the following components: biotic database of ~ 170,000 recorded sampling events; uniform habitat maps of 63 benthic habitats and 2 pelagic ones, constructed using relevant bathymetric features and biotic community compositions; bathymetric hill-shade map; depth contours; raster depth grid and human interference map. Other informative auxiliary maps are planned to be added (e.g., map of potential pockmark sites, detailed maps of tiny carbonate crust nolls and more). A number of 883 cited documents were listed by us for potential extraction of sampling efforts, most of them are available to us as PDFs  and are available also to the users, excluding copyright-protected ones. Forty-three major projects were depicted in addition to a variety of small studies (e.g., university theses). Thirty-five sampling devices were documented and described, and 3187 species-level identifications were already recorded. In addition, the system provides access to description of sampling devices and pictures of species and seascapes. New data is continuously deposited to the system and the system is flexible, allowing future addition of new types of information. Stable isotope ( δ 2 H, δ 13 C) measurements of wing tissue have been used to determine the natal geographic origin of migrant monarch butterflies that overwinter in Mexico. This study examines the possibility of using δ 13 C values of leaves from milkweeds growing in corn fields, soybean fields and non-agricultural habitats were examined as well as monarchs that were raised on those leaves. There were no δ 15 C values distinctly lower than those of other habitats and unlike those of locations within the summer breeding range. Thus, it should be possible to identify monarchs that came from cornfields in samples of overwintering monarchs made before ca. 2006.δ 15 N and δ 13 C values of leaves from milkweeds growing in corn fields, soybean fields and non-agricultural habitats were examined as well as monarchs that were raised on those leaves. There were no δ 15 N values for leaves or monarchs that were distinctive for crop fields. Milkweeds in corn fields, and monarchs that were raised on those milkweeds, were found to have δ 13 C values distinctly lower than those of other habitats and unlike those of locations within the summer breeding range. Thus, it should be possible to identify monarchs that came from cornfields in samples of overwintering monarchs made before ca. 2006.

The species composition of bumblebees ( Bombus species) across the elevation gradients in Chitwan-Annapurna Landscape (CHAL) was studied from April to November 2019. We performed opportunistic surveys to collect the bumblebee specimens. The walking transects were followed in the accessible places along the Kaligandaki, Marshyandi, and Budhigandaki river basins in different habitats (e.g., agricultural, forest, grassland and home garden). We identified 16 Bombus species from the sampling areas. The highest relative abundance was of B. haemorrhoidalis (20%), followed by B. festivus (20%) and B. eximius (19%). The least abundant species were B. branickii , B. miniatus , B. novus , and B. pressus with 1% relative abundance of each. We examined the effects of elevation on bumblebee richness and found a significant relationship. The Highest species richness was detected in the mid-elevation. Likewise, the highest species richness and diversity were found in the forest habitat in Gorkha site (n = 12, Shannon index H' = 2.18) followed by the grassland habitat of the Mustang site (n = 11, Shannon index H' = 2.10). Whereas, comparatively, species diversity was higher in habitats of the Gorkha site comparing Manang and Mustang. The elevation gradients create immense variations in microclimatic conditions and vegetation dynamics, which influence bumblebee abundance, species richness and diversities in different habitats in the study area. The mid-elevation range (2000-3000 m asl) of CHAL exhibited the highest species richness probably due to the higher availability of pollinator-dependent flowering plants in this range. The landcover composition and anthropogenic activities along the elevation gradient is the governing factor for the species composition, distribution and diversity of bumblebees in CHAL. The predation and/or dispersal of Quercus seeds by rodents play an important role in the creation of the tree species. The present study examined the effects of community habitats on the predation and dispersal of Quercus wutaishanica seeds by rodents. We released seeds with densities set at 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 seed square meter with litter cover, soil burial, and bare ground in the Liupan Mountains National Nature Reserve in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, northwest China. The results showed that (1) the litter cover and soil burial significantly increased the seed survival probability compared with bare ground treatments, especially the predation in situ (PIS) ( p < 0.05). Both the scatter hoarding (SH) and larder hoarding (LH) for litter cover and soil burial were significantly increased compared with bare ground ( p < 0.05). (2) The large seeds are preferentially predated after dispersal and their long-distance dispersal (>5 m) was significantly greater than that of small seeds ( p < 0.05), while small seeds are more likely to be preyed on in situ or during short-distance dispersal (<3 m). (3) The Q. wutaishanica seed predation by rodents increased at a high density rather than at a low density, indicating a negative density-dependent predation. These findings provide insights into the ecological characteristics of Quercus tree regeneration and shed light on the coexistence between rodents and different-sized seeds.

Whether microbes show habitat preferences is a fundamental question in microbial ecology. If different microbial lineages have distinct traits, those lineages may occur more frequently in habitats where their traits are advantageous. Sphingomonas is an ideal bacterial clade in which to investigate how habitat preference relates to traits because these bacteria inhabit diverse environments and hosts. Here we downloaded 440 publicly available Sphingomonas genomes, assigned them to habitats based on isolation source, and examined their phylogenetic relationships. We sought to address whether: (1) there is a relationship between Sphingomonas habitat and phylogeny, and (2) whether there is a phylogenetic correlation between key, genome-based traits and habitat preference. We hypothesized that Sphingomonas strains from similar habitats would cluster together in phylogenetic clades, and key traits that improve fitness in specific environments should correlate with habitat. Genome-based traits were categorized into the Y-A-S trait-based framework for high growth yield, resource acquisition, and stress tolerance. We selected 252 high quality genomes and constructed a phylogenetic tree with 12 well-defined clades based on an alignment of 404 core genes. Sphingomonas strains from the same habitat clustered together within the same clades, and strains within clades shared similar clusters of accessory genes. Additionally, key genome-based trait frequencies varied across habitats. We conclude that Sphingomonas gene content reflects habitat preference. The phyllosphere is a fluctuant micro-environment habitat that harbors diverse microbial communities that have the potential to influence plant growth through their effect on host fitness. However, we know little about the driving factors of phyllosphere microbial functional traits, e.g., genes related to nutrient cycling and microbial community structure under anthropic disturbance. Here, we characterized phyllosphere microbial communities and the abundance of genes related to nutrient cycling from diverse plant species between urban and natural habitats. We measured leaf functional traits to investigate the potential drivers of the phyllosphere microbial profile. Results indicated that phyllosphere microbial communities differed significantly between urban and natural habitats, and that this variation was dependent upon plant species. Host plant species had a greater influence on the abundance of genes involved in nutrient cycling in the phyllosphere than habitat. In addition, phyllosphere microbial diversity and functional gene abundance were significantly correlated. Furthermore, host leaf functional traits (e.g., specific leaf area and nutrient content) were potential driving factors of both phyllosphere microbial community structure and the abundance of genes involved in nutrient cycling. Orchids commonly rely on mycorrhizal fungi to obtain the necessary resources for seed germination and growth. Whereas most photosynthetic orchids typically associate with so-called rhizoctonia fungi to complete their life cycle, there is increasing evidence that other fungi may be involved as well and that the mycorrhizal communities associated with orchids may be more diverse. Coexisting orchid species also tend to associate with different fungi to reduce competition for similar resources and to increase long-term population viability. However, few studies have related the mycorrhizal communities in the rhizosphere to communities found in the roots of closely related coexisting orchid species. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing to investigate the diversity and community composition of orchid mycorrhizal fungi in the roots and the rhizosphere of four Cypripedium species growing in forests in Northeast China. The results showed that the investigated Cypripedium species associated with a wide variety of fungi including members of Tulasnellaceae, Psathyrellaceae, and Herpotrichiellaceae, whereas members of Russulaceae, Cortinariaceae, Thelephoraceae, and Herpotrichiellaceae showed high abundance in rhizosphere soils. The diversity of fungi detected in the rhizosphere soil was much higher than that in the roots. The observed variation in fungal communities in Cypripedium roots was not related to forest site or orchid species. On the other hand, variation in mycorrhizal communities of rhizosphere soil was significantly related to sampling site. These results indicate that orchid mycorrhizal communities in the rhizosphere display considerable variation among sites and that orchids use only a subset of the locally available fungi. Future studies focusing on the fine-scale spatial distribution of orchid mycorrhizal fungi and more detailed assessments of local environmental conditions will provide novel insights into the mechanisms explaining variation of fungal communities in both orchid roots and the rhizosphere., (© 2022. Rivers are often blocked by barriers to form different habitats, but it is not clear whether this change will affect the accumulation of N 2 O and CH 4 in rivers. Here, low barriers (less than 2 m, LB) increased N 2 O concentration by 1.13 times and CH 4 decreased by 0.118 times, while high barriers (higher than 2 m, less than 5 m high, HB) increased N 2 O concentration by 1.19 times and CH 4 by 2.76 times. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated LB and HB can promote the enrichment of Cyanobium and Chloroflexi , further limiting complete denitrification and increasing N 2 O accumulation. The LB promotes methanotrophs ( Methylocystis, Methylophilus , and Methylotenera ) to compete with denitrifiers ( Pseudomonas ) in water, and reduce CH 4 accumulation. While the HB can promote the methanotrophs to compete with nitrifiers ( Nitrosospira ) in sediment, thus reducing the consumption of CH 4 . LB and HB reduce river velocity, increase water depth, and reduce dissolved oxygen (DO), leading to enrichment of nirS -type denitrifiers and the increase of N 2 O concentration in water. Moreover, the HB reduces DO concentration and pmoA gene abundance in water, which can increase the accumulation of CH 4 . During feeding trips, central-place foragers make decisions on whether to feed at a single site, move to other sites and/or exploit different habitats. However, for many marine species, the lack of fine-resolution data on foraging behaviour and success has hampered our ability to test whether individuals follow predictions of the optimal foraging hypothesis. Here, we tested how benthic foraging habitat usage, time spent at feeding sites and probability of change of feeding sites affected feeding rates in European shags (Gulosus aristotelis) using time-depth-acceleration data loggers in 24 chick-rearing males. Foraging habitat (rocky or sandy) was identified from characteristic differences in dive patterns and body angle. Increase in body mass was estimated from changes in wing stroke frequency during flights. Bout feeding rate (increase in body mass per unit time of dive bout) did not differ between rocky and sandy habitats, or in relation to the order of dive bouts during trips. Bout feeding rates did not affect the duration of flight to the next feeding site or whether the bird switched habitat. However, the likelihood of a change in habitat increased with the number of dive bouts within a trip. Our findings that shags did not actively move further or switch habitats after they fed at sites of lower quality are in contrast to the predictions of optimal foraging theory. Stream ecosystems are spatially heterogeneous, with many different habitat patches distributed within a small area. The influence of this heterogeneity on the biodiversity of benthic insect communities is well documented; however, studies of the role of habitat heterogeneity in species coexistence and assembly remain limited. Here, we investigated how habitat heterogeneity influences spatial structure (beta biodiversity) and phylogenetic structure (evolutionary processes) of benthic stonefly (Plecoptera, Insecta) communities. We sampled 20 sites along two Alpine rivers, including seven habitats in four different reaches (headwaters, meandering, bar-braided floodplain, and lowland spring-fed). We identified 21 morphological species and delineated 52 DNA-species based on sequences from mitochondrial cox1 and nuclear ITS markers. Using DNA-species, we first analysed the patterns of variation in richness, diversity, and assemblage composition by quantifing the contribution of each reach and habitat to the overall DNA-species diversity using an additive partition analysis and distance-based redundancy analysis. Using gene-tree phylogenies, we assessed whether environmental filtering could lead to the co-occurrence of DNA-species using a two-step analysis to detect a phylogenetic signal. All four reaches significantly contributed to DNA-species richness, with the meandering reach having the highest contribution. Habitats had an effect on DNA-species diversity, where glide, riffle and, pool influenced the spatial structure of stonefly assemblage possibly due to the high habitat heterogeneity. Among the habitats, the pool showed significant phylogenetic clustering, suggesting high levels of evolutionary adaptation and strong habitat filtering. This assemblage structure may be caused by long-term stability of the habitat and the similar requirements for co-occurring species. Introduction: As a folk herbal medicine, Trillium tschonoskii has been used for thousands of years. However, due to the complexity of the chemical constituents of this herb, few investigations have acquired a comprehensive understanding of its quality markers., Objective: This study was conducted to characterise the chemical composition of T. tschonoskii and identify its potential quality markers., Material and Methods: A systematic analytical method based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) was used to characterise the constituents of T. tschonoskii. Multivariate statistical analysis was performed to investigate the chemical differences between different tissues, as well as the relationship between chemical compositions and habitats. The potential quality markers were predicted via network pharmacology and molecular docking, then confirmed by cellular assays., Results: A total of 77 compounds were co-isolated and identified, and among them, 26 were discovered from the genus Trillium for the first time. Ten batches of roots/rhizomes were explicitly clustered into five groups according to the climate types of the habitats, and the clusters of the fruits and roots/rhizomes from the same plants were independent due to the significant difference in chemical composition. Diosgenin had a good docking affinity with the relevant targets within the IL-17 pathway and cytokine pathway and could significantly inhibit TNF-α expression in hypoxic brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs)., Conclusion: This is the first study to establish the chemical composition profile of T. tschonoskii by UHPLC-MS systematically, and diosgenin was confirmed to be a potential quality marker of T. tschonoskii for the treatment of headaches., (© 2022 The Authors. The effect of neap-spring transition on the spatial and temporal changes in the cell size distribution of different phytoplankton species and their size-based habitats distribution were investigated in the highly turbid macrotidal Chikugo River estuary, Japan in 2021. The estuarine mixing changed from stratified to well-mixed over the transition from neap to spring tides and saltwater (1-5) intruded until 17 km with negligible effect from river discharge. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) was low (<40 mg L -1 ) during neap tide and highest (1000 mg L -1 ) during spring tide associated with strong mixing, which led to the formation of an estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) zone between 8 and 12 km. A total of 159 phytoplankton species were identified in the estuary and are classified into seven groups. The diatoms (freshwater and marine habitats) were found as significant groups (79-86 %). Principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that salinity (p < 0.05) and mixing (p < 0.05) were the major controlling factors in the phytoplankton habitats distribution. The diatoms abundance started to increase from neap tide and reached the maximum abundance (174.714 cells/mL) two days after neap tide, then decreased towards spring tide (69.257 cells/mL). Additionally, the cell sizes of dominant diatoms species (Skeletonema costatum and Nitzschia acicularis) increased from neap to intermediate tides and continued increasing until the spring tide. Spatially, the abundance of diatoms was lower in the middle estuary (67-86 cells/mL) than in other parts because of ETM formation, although larger size distribution occurred. This study concludes that the abundance and size distribution of phytoplankton are influenced by estuarine mixing, and the neap-spring transition phase is more essential for phytoplankton growth than individual neap and spring tides in tide-dominated estuaries. Background: Riverine ecosystems are one of the most important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment, but the occurrence and controlling factors of ARG distribution in different habitats of riverine ecosystems remain poorly understood. In this study, a metagenomic approach was used to characterize ARG types and their abundance in different habitats (rhizosphere soil, surface bulk soil, bottom bulk soil, and sediment) of riverine ecosystems in eastern China. Sampling sites were located along different rivers of eastern China, which are geographically isolated. Differences in bacterial communities, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), pattern and intensity of human activities, climate, and other environmental factors at the sampling sites and habitats were expected to affect ARG occurrence., Results: ARGs were observed with high variations in diversity (44-206 subtypes) and abundance (6.85-105.68 ×/Gb). There were significant south-north differences in ARG occurrence in the same habitat, except for surface bulk soil. And the significant difference was found in ARGs among four southern habitats. South-north differences in ARGs of the same habitat were mainly attributed to the combination of different occurrence frequencies and habitat selections of ARGs. Differences in ARG profiles among the four habitats in the south and the north were both mainly attributed to the different occurrence frequencies of ARGs. Bacterial communities and MGEs (Mobile genetic elements) could account for the observed variance in the resistome of riverine ecosystems across eastern China. The co-occurrences of specific ARGs with bacterial communities and MGEs were more frequent at the northern sampling sites than in the south, and co-occurrence patterns (i.e. ARGs and bacterial communities or ARGs and MGEs) varied between the habitats. Background: Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is the cause of one of the most important mosquito-borne emerging diseases negatively affecting the health of humans and animals, particularly in Africa. In Ethiopia, the status of RVFV and the existence of potential vectors are unknown., Objectives: This study aimed to survey the mosquito vectors of RVFV and the detection of the virus in selected sites (Batu, Hawassa, Arba Minch and Borana) in Ethiopia., Methods: CDC light traps baited with the sugar-yeast solution were set up at various locations for a total of 29 trap nights. Mosquitoes identification were made morphologically using a stereomicroscope and for RVFV detection by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)., Results: Among a total of 132 trap efforts conducted, 60 (45%) captured the mosquitoes. A total of 1576 adult mosquitoes were collected and identified. Including Aedes (n = 407; 25.8%), Anopheles (n = 493; 32.3%), Culex (n = 466; 29.6%) and Mansonia (n = 210; 13.32%). The genome material of RVFV was not detected by RT-PCR., Conclusions: The existence of a potential Aedes species may pose a risk for the occurrence of the RVF outbreak in Ethiopia. Based on the current study, we recommend further monitoring for potential mosquito vectors of RVFV, particularly with a view to targeting the seasons during which the mosquitoes can be abundant along with a serological survey of susceptible hosts., (© 2022 The Authors. Greece is known to be a biodiversity hotspot. Though the plant diversity of Peloponnisos, the southernmost part of the Greek mainland, has been well-studied during the past 200 years, there are still gaps in our knowledge. To this end, the flora of the neighboring mountains Oligirtos and Farmakas was investigated, with a total of 740 and 762 taxa (species and subspecies) recorded, respectively, of which 635 and 756 for the first time. Ten species or subspecies were previously not known from Peloponnisos. Endemics correspond to 10.2% and 8.9% of the total flora and are predominately hemicryptophytes and entomogamous. Almost half of them produce capsules. The number of endemics per 2 × 2 km grid cell reveals that their highest number is found in areas of high elevation, and corresponds to habitats above the tree line, or to the limestone cliffs vegetation. No less than 62 endemic plant taxa of Mt. Oligirtos and 58 of Mt. Farmakas are threatened. A comparison of Mts. Oligirtos and Farmakas with five neighboring mountains shows that elevation correlates positively with the number of regional or bi-regional endemics but not with local or narrow endemics. The importance of mountainous regions for plant conservation is stressed.

Dendrobium nobile , an epiphytic plant, is a traditional medicinal herb with abundant endophytes. It is unclear whether the variation in the diversity and abundance of endophytes could stimulate the biosynthesis of medicinal compounds in the plant. In this study, we collected fresh stems of D. nobile from four habitats for investigating the fungal community structure, dendrobine content, and environment factors and their correlations. The results indicated no significant difference in endophytic fungal diversity among the habitats; however, different dominant or special endophytic genera were observed in the hosts from different habitats. The altitude was observed to be positively related to the dendrobine content, as the stems collected from the altitude of 692 m exhibited the highest level of dendrobine. Furthermore, the relative abundance of Toxicocladosporium was found to be positively correlated with the altitude and dendrobine content. The epiphytic matrix exhibited a significant negative correlation with the relative abundance of the endophytic fungus Gibberella but did not exhibit any significant correlation with the dendrobine content. Reproductive traits are among the most important factors in determining the success of species establishment and invasion in a new area. Studies on transcontinental invasions have revealed that invasive species perform better in the invasive range than in their native ranges. We assumed that the same regularity exists in intracontinental invasions and thus investigated whether the reproductive traits of Scotch broom, Cytisus scoparius , perform better in the alien invasive range in Europe compared to its native range in the same continent. The aim of this research was to reveal the potential and realised fecundity of C. scoparius in its native and invasive ranges, as well as relationships with the size of pods, habitat type, and how these traits vary at the same site in different years. The results of this study were not able to unambiguously confirm our hypothesis that C. scoparius in the invasive range in Lithuania, specifically in the southern part of the Boreal biogeographical region, outperform plants in the native range with regard to the analysed reproductive traits. Potential fecundity of C. scoparius in the native range was significantly higher than in the invaded range; however, realised fecundity was not significantly different between the native and invasive ranges. The pod length was similar in both ranges, whereas the pod width was significantly greater in the invasive range than in the native range. The results suggest that the number of ovules per pod, number of matured seeds, and the size of pods are related with the type of habitat and local environmental conditions in the habitat. Although many studies on other species have confirmed higher fecundity and overall better performance of plants in the invasive range than in the native range on other continents, this rule probably cannot be applied for intracontinental invasive species occurring in relatively close geographical regions to their native ranges.

Sediments are considered to be important sinks of microplastics, but the enrichment process of microplastics by blue carbon ecosystems is poorly studied. This study analyzed the spatial distribution and temporal changes, assessed the polymer types and morphological characteristics of microplastics in sediments of five ecosystems, i.e. forests, paddy fields, mangroves, saltmarshes and bare beaches on Ximen Island, Yueqing Bay, China. The trapping effect of blue carbon (mangrove and saltmarsh) sediments on microplastic was further explored. Temporal trends in microplastic abundance showed a significant increase over the last 20 years, with the enrichment of microplastics in mangrove and saltmarsh sediments being 1.7 times as high as that in bare beach, exhibiting blue carbon vegetations have strong enrichment effect on microplastics. The dominant color, shape, size, and polymer type of microplastics in sediments were transparent, fibers and fragments, <1 mm, and polyethylene, respectively. Significant differences in the abundance and characteristics of microplastics between intertidal sediments and terrestrial soils reveal that runoff input is the main source of microplastics. Although Glyphosate-based herbicides are often marketed as environmentally friendly and easily biodegradable, its bioavailability and risks to wildlife raise significant concerns. Among non-target organisms, earthworms which live in close contact with the soil can be directly exposed to pesticides and harmed. We investigated soil contamination and the exposure of earthworms to glyphosate, its metabolite AMPA, and glufosinate in an arable landscape in France, both in treated (i.e. temporary grasslands and cereal fields under conventional farming), and nontreated habitats (i.e. hedgerows, permanent grasslands and cereal fields under organic farming) (n = 120 sampling sites in total). Glyphosate, AMPA and glufosinate were detected in 88%, 58% and 35% of the soil samples, and in 74%, 38% and 12% of the earthworm samples, respectively. For both glyphosate and AMPA, concentrations in soils were at least 10 times lower than predicted environmental concentrations. However, the maximum glyphosate soil concentration measured (i.e., 0.598 mg kg -1 ) was only 2 to 3 times lower than the concentrations revealed to affect earthworms (survival and avoidance) in the literature. These compounds were found both in conventional and organic farming fields, thus supporting a recent study, and for the first time they were detected in hedgerows and grasslands. However, glyphosate and AMPA were more frequently detected in soils from cereal fields and hedgerows than in grasslands, and median concentrations measured in soils from cereal fields were significantly higher than in the two other habitats. Bioaccumulation of glyphosate and AMPA in earthworms was higher than expected according to the properties of the molecules. Our findings raised issues about the high occurrence of glyphosate and AMPA in soils from cropped and more natural areas in arable landscapes. Lysimachiae Herba (LH), called Jinqiancao in Chinese, is an authentic medical herb in Sichuan Province often used in the prescription of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, in recent years, there has been a lack of comprehensive research on its chemical components. In addition, the landform of Sichuan Province varies greatly from east to west and the terrain is complex and diverse, which has an important influence on the chemical constituents in LH. In this study, ultrafast liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UFLC-triple TOF-MS/MS) was used to analyze the samples of LH from eight different habitats in Sichuan Basin. The constituents were identified according to the precise molecular weight, the fragment ions of each chromatographic peak and the retention time of the compound obtained by high-resolution mass spectrometry, combined with software database searches, standard comparisons and the related literature. Differential chemical constituents were screened using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and t -tests. The results showed that a total of 46 constituents were identified and inferred, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, amino acids, tannins, fatty acids and coumarins; the fragmentation pathways of the main constituents were preliminarily deduced. According to the variable importance in projection (VIP) and p -values, four common differential constituents were screened out, 2- O -galloylgalactaric acid, quercetin 3- O -xylosyl-rutinoside, nicotiflorin and kaempferol 3-rutinosyl 7- O -alpha-l-rhamnoside. This study provides basic information for the establishment of a comprehensive quality evaluation system for LH.

Background: Tumor heterogeneity poses major clinical challenges in high-grade gliomas (HGGs). Quantitative radiomic analysis with spatial tumor habitat clustering represents an innovative, non-invasive approach to represent and quantify tumor microenvironment heterogeneity. To date, habitat imaging has been applied mainly on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), although virtually extendible to any imaging modality, including advanced MRI techniques such as perfusion and diffusion MRI as well as positron emission tomography (PET) imaging., Objectives: This study aims to evaluate an innovative PET and MRI approach for assessing hypoxia, perfusion, and tissue diffusion in HGGs and derive a combined map for clustering of intra-tumor heterogeneity., Materials and Methods: Seventeen patients harboring HGGs underwent a pre-operative acquisition of MR perfusion (PWI), Diffusion (dMRI) and 18 F-labeled fluoroazomycinarabinoside ( 18 F-FAZA) PET imaging to evaluate tumor vascularization, cellularity, and hypoxia, respectively. Tumor volumes were segmented on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T1 post-contrast images, and voxel-wise clustering of each quantitative imaging map identified eight combined PET and physiologic MRI habitats. Habitats' spatial distribution, quantitative features and histopathological characteristics were analyzed., Results: A highly reproducible distribution pattern of the clusters was observed among different cases, particularly with respect to morphological landmarks as the necrotic core, contrast-enhancing vital tumor, and peritumoral infiltration and edema, providing valuable supplementary information to conventional imaging. A preliminary analysis, performed on stereotactic bioptic samples where exact intracranial coordinates were available, identified a reliable correlation between the expected microenvironment of the different spatial habitats and the actual histopathological features. To establish the biogeographic affinities of the caddisfly fauna of Mongolia, published records and results of our faunistic studies were analyzed. This study captured more than 47,000 adults collected from 386 locations beside lakes, ponds, streams/rivers, and springs in ten sub-basins of Mongolia using Malaise traps, aerial sweeping, and ultraviolet lights. In total, 201 species have been recorded, and approximately 269 species may occur in Mongolia according to our estimation. In a comparison of species richness for the family level, the Limnephilidae and Leptoceridae were the richest in species. The families Brachycentridae, Glossosomatidae, and Psychomyiidae had low species richness, but they included the most dominant species in terms of abundance and/or the percentage of occurrence in the samples from multiple sub-basins. Comparing the sub-basins, the Selenge had the highest Shannon diversity (H' = 3.3) and the Gobi sub-basin had the lowest (H' = 1.5). According to the Jaccard index of similarity, caddisfly species assemblages of Mongolia's ten sub-basins were divided into two main groups: One group includes the Selenge, Shishkhed, Bulgan, Tes, and Depression of Great Lakes sub-basins; the other group includes the Kherlen, Onon, Khalkh Gol, Valley of Lakes, and Gobi sub-basins. The majority of Mongolian species were composed of East Palearctic taxa, with a small percentage of West Palearctic and Nearctic representatives and an even smaller percentage from the Oriental region, suggesting that the Mongolian Gobi Desert is, and has been, a significant barrier to the distribution of caddisfly species between China and Mongolia.

Background: Wet, intermittently flooded freshwater coastal and shallow water habitats are notable for their high biodiversity. Many of the usually semiaquatic annuals or small perennials common in such habitats are in decline due to the high sensitivity of such habitats to changes caused by anthropogenic and natural factors. The Euro-Siberian semiaquatic Elatine hydropiper rarely occurs in Lithuania and is protected there and in other Baltic and Central European countries. In 2020, we found a large population of Elatine hydropiper in southern Lithuania (Varėna district) in Lake Pabezninkai and its exposed shores. The water level of the lake has receded by about 1.5-1.6 m since 2018, exposing wide, wet, and sandy or silty shores. The aim of this study was to determine the status of the Elatine hydropiper population and to assess its potential for long-term survival. The objectives of the study were to (a) determine the size and quantitative characteristics of the population, (b) assess the seed bank in the shallows and exposed shores of the lake, (c) assess the species diversity in the communities with Elatine hydropiper , (d) evaluate the conservation value of the studied species and the lake habitat., Methods: The studies were carried out between 2020 and 2021. The number and coverage of plant patches as well as seed bank studies were carried out at three sites with different shoreline substrate. At each site, the number of patches and coverage was assessed in 50 sample plots of 100 cm2. The seed bank was examined in the top 5 cm of the substrate. A total of 90 substrate samples were analyzed., Results: We found that Elatine hydropiper grows on ca. 0.38 ha in the lake and on ca. 0.95 ha on the shores. On the exposed shores, the mean number of Elatine hydropiper patches per 1 m2 was 2155 ± 1241.5 and their mean cover was 23.17% of the surface. Seed bank analyses revealed that the seeds and seed shells were significantly more abundant in the bottom sediments than in the shore sand or silt. The mean number of seeds per liter of soil was 85.8 ± 210.2, and the mean number of seed shells was 217.0 ± 265.8., Conclusions: The assessment of the status of the species in Lithuania according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) criteria has led us to conclude that it should now be classified as vulnerable [A3; B1ab(iii); C2a(ii); D2]. The key to protecting Elatine hydropiper and other co-occurring rare species with similar ecological and biological characteristics, as well as the plant communities of shallows and exposed wet banks, is to protect their habitats. Belowground fungi are closely related to crop growth, and agricultural fertilization is widely known to affect soil fungal communities. Yet it remains unclear whether fungal communities in differing belowground habitats-root endosphere, rhizosphere soil, and bulk soil-respond differently to long-term fertilization. Here we investigated the variation in fungal communities of root endosphere, rhizosphere soil, and bulk soil under 35 years of fertilization in wheat fields. Specifically, the fertilization regimes were applied as five treatments: soils receiving NPK fertilizer, NPK and cow manure (NPK+CM), NPK and pig manure (NPK+PM), NPK and wheat straw (NPK+WS), and no fertilizer (Control). Long-term fertilization significantly impacted fungal community composition in all three habitats, and these effects were stronger in the rhizosphere and bulk soils than root endosphere. Mantel test results showed that fungal community composition was significantly correlated with phosphorus and zinc contents. Further, fungal alpha diversity was lowest in the NPK+PM treatment and was negatively correlated with both phosphorus and zinc contents. Moreover, NPK+PM treatment had the lowest complexity of fungal co-occurrence network, and in general network complexity was significantly negatively correlated with the zinc and phosphorus contents. Taken together, these results suggest that long-term fertilization can impact fungal communities not only in soils but in root endosphere, and this is strongly associated with the contents of phosphorus and zinc there, a finding important for guiding fertilization management practices and supporting sustainable agriculture. IMPORTANCE Fungi, an essential component in nutrient cycling and plant growth, are highly sensitive to fertilization. However, there are limited studies on fungi in root endosphere under long-term fertilization management. Our research extended the study on the endophytic fungal community of crop roots under agricultural management and found that its responses were similar to the communities in soil habitats. In addition, the type of organic materials was reported as the main driver affecting soil fungal community under long-term fertilization. Our research further revealed that the underlying mechanism of affecting the fungal communities in the soils and roots was the differences in phosphorus and zinc contents caused by the application of different organic materials. Therefore, our results highlight that except for phosphorus, zinc content of the organic materials should be considered in long-term organic fertilization systems.

The community structure and diversity of hymenopteran parasitoids of the agromyzid leafminer Chromatomyia horticola (Diptera: Agromyzidae) were studied in agricultural, urban, and natural habitats in Changchun, Northeast China. In agricultural habitats, a total of 3,380 individuals and 19 species were collected, and the dominant species were Diglyphus isaea (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) (71.15%) and Chrysocharis pentheus (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) (12.10%). In urban habitats, a total of 5,996 individuals and 21 species were collected. There were three dominant species, C. pentheus (26.68%), Chrysocharis phryne (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) (22.18%), and D. isaea (22.13%). In natural habitats, a total of 1,566 individuals and 26 species were collected. There were three dominant species, C. pentheus (30.52%), D. isaea (15.52%), and Pediobius metallicus (Nees) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) (12.26%). The diversity indices of the parasitoid community in urban and natural habitats were higher than that in agricultural habitats, and the richness index in natural habitats was higher than that in agricultural and urban habitats. These results suggest that there are differences in the community composition and dynamics of parasitoids in different habitats. Hymenopteran parasitoids of C. horticola are less abundant in natural habitats; however, species richness is greater, and can be used as a species reserve for biological control., (© The Author(s) 2022. Thraustochytrids have gained significant attention in recent years because of their considerable ecological and biotechnological importance. Yet, the influence of seasons and habitats on their culturable diversity and lipid profile remains poorly described. In this study, a total of 58 thraustochytrid strains were isolated from the coastal waters of Qingdao, China. These strains were phylogenetically close to five thraustochytrid genera, namely Botryochytrium , Oblongichytrium , Schizochytrium , Thraustochytrium , and Sicyoidochytrium . Most of the isolated strains were classified into the genera Thraustochytrium and Oblongichytrium . Further diversity analysis revealed that samples collected from nutrient-rich habitats and during summer/fall yielded significantly higher culturable diversity of thraustochytrids than those from low-nutrient habitats and winter/spring. Moreover, sampling habitats and seasons significantly impacted the fatty acid profiles of the strains. Particularly, the Oblongichytrium sp. OC931 strain produced a significant amount (153.99 mg/L) of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), accounting for 9.12% of the total fatty acids, which was significantly higher than that of the previously reported Aurantiochytrium strains. Overall, the results of this study fill the gap in our current understanding of the culturable diversity of thraustochytrids in the coastal waters and the impact of the sampling habitats and seasons on their capacity for lipid accumulation.
