This study shows the multistep synthesis of a series of Tröger's base polymers of intrinsic microporosity (TB-PIMs) based on a hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) core, with a focus on evaluating their thermal stability, porosity, and CO 2 capture performance. Both ladder and linear structures were prepared, designed to feature tunable nitrogen content and porosity. Our findings demonstrate that polymers with higher nitrogen content, such as tetra-TB-HPB, exhibit superior CO 2 affinity and selectivity, attributed to enhanced interactions with CO 2 and optimized micropore sizes. Linear TB-polymers 1 and 2 are also made for comparison and show competitive performance in carbon capture, suggesting that cost-effective, simpler-to-synthesize materials can achieve efficient gas separation. The study reveals that increased porosity significantly enhances CO 2 capacity and selectivity, particularly in networked TB-HPB-PIMs with high surface areas and narrow micropores, achieving values up to 544 m 2 g -1 , CO 2 uptake of 2.00 mmol g -1 , and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 45.6. The thermal properties of these materials, assessed via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), show that TB-HPB-PIMs maintain robust thermal stability in nitrogen atmosphere, with tetra- and hexa-TB-HPBs leading the series. However, in oxidative environments, denser polymers such as TB-HPB and linear TB-polymer 1 demonstrate higher performance, likely due to restricted air diffusion. Overall, our findings highlight the critical need to balance porosity and thermal stability in TB-HPB-PIMs for applications in gas separation, carbon capture, and the potential for these polymers as flame retardant materials. Tetra-TB-HPB stands out as the most promising material for CO 2 capture and thermal stability under inert conditions, while denser polymers like TB-HPB offer superior performance in oxidative environments.

Most of the reported covalent organic frameworks (COFs) so far are prepared from highly symmetric building blocks, which to some extent limits the expansion of COF diversity and complexity. Low-symmetric building blocks can be designed through a desymmetrized vertex strategy, which might be used to construct new topological COFs. But reports of COFs constructed by asymmetric building blocks are thus far very rare. Here, a feasible strategy to design asymmetric building blocks for COF synthesis is introduced, by simply varying the positions of functional groups in the monomer. As a proof of concept, two isomeric hexaphenylbenzene-based "two-in-one" type monomers (1,2,4-HPB-NH 2 and 1,3,5-HPB-NH 2 ) are designed and synthesized. To the authors' surprise, self-polycondensation of the asymmetric 1,2,4-HPB-NH 2 (i.e., the isomer of common C 3 -symmetric 1,3,5-HPB-NH 2 ) also affords highly crystalline COF (1,2,4-HPB-COF) similar to the symmetric 1,3,5-HPB-NH 2 counterpart with identical topological structure. The triangular porous structures of both HPB-based COFs are well resolved by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), theoretical simulations, nitrogen sorption, and morphologies analysis. Synthesis and characterization of a series of rylene-diimide substituted hexaphenylbenzenes (HPBs) is presented. The direct connection of the rylene-diimide units to the HPBs via the imide-N-position without any linkers as well as the use of naphthalene-diimides (NDIs) next to perylene-diimides (PDIs) is unprecedented. While mono-substituted products were obtained by imidization reactions with amino-HPB and the respective rylene-monoimides, key step for the formation of tri- and hexa-substituted HPBs is the Co-catalysed cyclotrimerization. Particular emphasis for physic-chemical characterization was on to the number of NDIs/PDIs per HPB and the overall substitution patterns. Lastly, Scholl oxidation conditions were applied to all HPB systems to generate the corresponding hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs). Importantly, the efficiency of the transformation strongly depends on the number of NDIs/PDIs. In this work, two tailor-made luminogens comprising of electron donors (acridine and phenoxazine) and acceptor (triazine) bridged by the through-space conjugated hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) are synthesized and characterized. Their thermal stability, electrochemical behaviors, crystal, and electronic structures, and photophysical properties are systematically investigated. The crystal and electronic structures reveal that the peripheral phenyls in HPB are closely aligned in a propeller-like fashion, rendering efficient through-space charge transfer between donor and electron moieties. These molecules display weak fluorescence with negligible delayed component in solutions but strong fluorescence with greatly increased delayed component upon aggregate formation, namely aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF). Their neat films exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY), and prominent delayed fluorescence. The non-doped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these new luminogens exhibit excellent performance with maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.7% and very small efficiency roll-off of 2.7% at 1,000 cd m -2 . Designing AIDF molecules with through-space charge transfer could be a promising strategy to explore robust luminescent materials for efficient non-doped OLEDs.

Through-bond conjugated molecules are the major frameworks for traditional molecular wires, while through-space conjugated units are rarely utilized and studied although they have shown unique conducting potential. Herein, we present novel single-molecule wires built on through-space conjugated hexaphenylbenzene. Their conductance, measured by the scanning tunneling microscopy based break-junction technique, increases with the improvement of through-space conjugation and finally reaches a remarkable value (12.28 nS) which greatly exceeds that of conventional through-bond conjugated counterpart (2.45 nS). The multichannel conducting model by integrating through-space and through-bond conjugations could be a promising strategy for the further design of robust single-molecule wires with advanced conductance and stability.

In the present investigation, an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) active donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) system 5 having fumaronitrile as the acceptor and hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) as the donor moieties joined through rotatable phenyl rings has been designed and synthesized that is highly emissive in the solid state and exhibits stimuli-responsive reversible piezochromic behavior upon grinding and heating. Because of its AIEE characteristics, HPB derivative 5 undergoes aggregation to form fluorescent aggregates in mixed aqueous media that exhibit ratiometric fluorescence response toward aliphatic amines (primary/secondary/tertiary) and turn-off response toward aromatic amines and hence differentiates between them. Further, the solution-coated portable paper strips of derivative 5 showed pronounced and sensitive response toward aromatic and aliphatic amines with a detection limit in the range of picogram and nanogram level, respectively.

A hexaphenylbenzene (HPB)-based derivative bearing thiol groups has been designed and synthesized that undergoes aggregation-induced emission enhancement in mixed aqueous media to form rodlike fluorescent aggregates. These rodlike aggregates behave as a "not quenched" probe for the detection of silver ions and further act as reactors and stabilizers for reducing-agent-free preparation of blue luminescent silver nanoclusters at room temperature. The utilization of fluorescent supramolecular aggregates for the preparation of Ag NCs in mixed aqueous media is unprecedented in the literature. Moreover, the wet chemical method that we are reporting in the present paper for the preparation of luminescent silver nanoclusters is better than the other methods reported in the literature. Further, these in situ generated Ag NCs showed exceptional catalytic activity in the preparation of pyrroles involving cocyclization of isocyanides and terminal alkynes. Interestingly, the catalytic efficiency of in situ generated Ag NCs was found to be better than the other catalytic systems reported in the literature.

Aggregates of hexaphenylbenzene derivatives 3, having pyrene groups form network of fluorescent nanofibres in presence of mercury ions. Further, fluorescent nanofibres of 3-Hg(2+) supramolecular ensemble exhibit sensitive and pronounced response towards the picric acid. In addition, the solution coated paper strips of 3-Hg(2+) supramolecular ensemble can detect picric acid in the range of 2.29 fg/cm(2), thus, providing a simple, portable and low cost method for detection of picric acid in solution and in contact mode., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
