Over the past decades, many efficient methodologies have been developed that allow for the enantioselective synthesis of chiral sulfinyl compounds. However, the enantioselective deoxygenation of hexavalent sulfones for the formation of chiral sulfinyl compounds still remains one of the major challenges in the fields of asymmetric synthesis and organosulfur chemistry. Here we have demonstrated that a synergistic combination of organocatalysis and the incorporation of a cyano group into the sulfone generates a chiral sulfinic species as an active intermediate. A wide range of chiral sulfinates with high enantioselectivities could then be acquired using alcohols as nucleophiles, and the subsequent transformations allowed the collective preparation of a variety of chiral sulfinyl compounds. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the catalytic cycle involves a quinuclidine-assisted stepwise 1,2-cyano group transfer, base-assisted intermolecular substitution with alcohol and regeneration of the active catalyst. Structure has been considered to play an important role in photocatalytic performance of the semiconductors, but the intrinsic factors were rarely revealed. Herein, ZnO nanomaterials in the structures of thin film, nanowire array and nanosheet array were synthesized, and their structural characteristics, optical properties, photocurrent response and photocatalytic efficiency were compared with each other for illustrating the issue. The photoluminescence intensity decreased in the order of nanosheets, thin film and nanowires for improved lifetime of the photoexcited charges. The absorption of the nanosheets and nanowires improved obviously in the visible range with a redshift of the absorption edge than that of the thin film. The nanowires possessed the highest response current of 82.65 μA at a response time of 2.0 ms in a sensitivity of 87.93 at the light frequency of 1 Hz, and gained the largest catalytic efficiency of 2.45 μg/cm 2  h for the methylene blue degradation in UV light. Nevertheless, the improvement of catalytic efficiency of the nanosheets (up to 42.4%) was much larger than that of nanowires (5.7%) and thin film (2.6%) for the Au coating. The analysis revealed that the photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO nanomaterials was modulated by the structure as it contained different surface area, roughness, defect and doping states, vacancies, polar and non-polar crystalline faces, which would provide structural design of semiconductor nanomaterials for the photoelectric and photocatalytic applications., (© 2022. (1) Background: Understanding occurrence can help formulate effective preventative laws and regulations. However, the most recent global burden and road injuries (RIs) trends have not been reported. This study reports the burden of RIs globally from 1990 to 2019. (2) Methods: RIs data were downloaded from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. Incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) described the trend and burden of RIs. We calculated age-standardized rates (ASRs) and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) for the above indexes to evaluate the temporal trend of RIs. We evaluated the social-demographic index (SDI) with epidemiological RI parameters and reported proportions of age-standardized rates due to RI. (3) Results: In 2019, the global incidence of RIs reached 103.2 million. The EAPC of RI incidence increased, whereas deaths and DALYs decreased. Age-standardized incident rate (ASIR) was highest in low-middle SDI regions, age-standardized death rate (ASDR) was high in middle SDI regions, and age-standardized DALYs increased in low SDI regions. The highest accident rates were found in those aged 20-24 years old. Cyclist injuries were the leading RIs (34%), though pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents were the leading cause of death (37.4%, 37.6%) and DALYs (35.7%, 32.3%), respectively. (4) Conclusions: Over the past 30 years, RIs incidence increased annually, though death and DALY rates decreased. RIs places a considerable burden on public health in low SDI countries. Data should be used to develop and implement effective measures to reduce the burden of RIs.

A ternary semiconductor ZnO/MoS 2 /Ag 2 S nanorod array in an intimate core-shell structure was synthesized on glass substrates. The physicochemical properties and photocatalytical performance of the specimen were characterized and compared with single ZnO and binary ZnO/Ag 2 S and ZnO/MoS 2 nanorod arrays. It is found that the coating layers depressed the band edge emission of the ZnO core, improved light absorption in the visible range, reduced charge transfer resistance, and increased photocatalytic activity. The ternary heterojunction nanorod array possessed full solar absorption with an efficiency of 52.88% for the degradation of methylene blue under visible light in 30 min. The efficiency was higher than other arrays and was 7.6 times that of the ZnO array. Theory analysis revealed that the coating layer brought different band alignment in the heterojunctions for efficient charge separation and conduction, which was beneficial for the photocatalytic performance., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

This study investigates the effect of extended laminectomy (EL) on spinal cord injury (SCI) caused by spinal shortening, and further, the timing and the optimal length of removal. Dogs received spinal column shortening at T13 segment, following which the control group underwent regular laminectomy while other groups underwent laminectomy with an additional 1-lamina length removed 6h after shortening ("1-lamina EL 6 h"), an extra 1.5-lamina length resected at 6 h or 12 h after shortening ("1.5-lamina EL 6 h" and "1.5-lamina EL 12 h"), and an extra 2-lamina length removed at 6 or 12 h after shortening ("2-lamina EL 6 h" and 2-lamina EL 12 h"), respectively. Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) and neurological function were recorded periodically; spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) and nerve cell apoptosis were detected. The results showed that resection of an additional 1-lamina length appeared inadequate to relieve the sharp kinking of the spinal cord, whereas the kinking disappeared with an additional 2-lamina length resection. The "1-lamina EL 6 h" and "1.5-lamina EL 12 h" groups showed no significant differences from the control in latency of SSEP, SCBF, hindlimb function and apoptosis. By contrast, significant recovery of SSEP, SCBF and hindlimb function as well as reduction of apoptosis were presented in other three groups. The "2-lamina EL 6 h" group, in particular, showed the most prominent recovery. In conclusion, an additional resection of two laminae at 6 h after shortening showed the best effect in alleviating SCI. Timely and adequately extended laminectomy could be a potential therapeutic strategy for SCI attributable to spinal shortening.

Commonly, an elusive intermediate is generated from a precursor and then trapped and consumed in a reaction. Vinylidene ortho-quinone methides (VQMs) have been demonstrated as transient axially chiral intermediates in asymmetric catalysis due to their orthogonal π-bonds forming an allene motif. The current understanding of VQMs is primarily based on time-resolved absorption, trapping experiments and computational studies. Herein, we report the first isolation and comprehensive characterization of a VQM, including crystallographic analysis. The disturbed aromaticity of the VQM led to its high reactivity as an electrophile or a 4π-component capable of asymmetric dearomatization of an electron-deficient phenyl group. Notably, the VQM could be isolated in enantiomerically enriched form, and the subsequent transformation was stereospecific, indicating that the generation of the VQM was involved in the enantiodetermining step. Nonactivated arenes, such as benzene derivatives, are chemically inert due to their intrinsic aromaticity and low polarity. The catalytic asymmetric dearomatization (CADA, coined by You and co-workers) of the nonactivated arenes represents a formidable challenge. We herein demonstrated an organocatalytic asymmetric dearomatizing hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of benzene derivatives. The tunable regioselectivity of this strategy allowed delivery of a diversity of stereochemically complex polycyclic compounds and oxahelicenes with excellent stereoselectivity. The high complexity and three-dimensionality of the products are crucial for their potential applications in materials science and drug discovery. Mechanistic studies suggested that this reaction proceeds through a chiral tetra -substituted vinylidene ortho -quinone methide (VQM) intermediate, which is extremely active to overcome the loss of aromaticity of benzene derivatives with concomitant chirality transfer.

1,2-Azoles are privileged structures in ligand/catalyst design and widely exist in many important natural products and drugs. In this report, two types of axially chiral 1,2-azoles (naphthyl-isothiazole S-oxides with a stereogenic sulfur center and atropoisomeric naphthyl pyrazoles) are synthesized via modified vinylidene ortho-quinone methide intermediates. Diverse products are acquired in satisfying yields and good to excellent enantioselectivities. The vinylidene ortho-quinone methide intermediates bearing two hetero atoms at 5-position have been demonstrated as a platform molecule for the atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral 1,2-azoles. This finding not only enrich our knowledge of vinylidene ortho-quinone methide chemistry but also provide the easy preparation method for diverse atropisomeric heterobiaryls that were inaccessible by existing methodologies. Magneto-optical (MO) properties of the bilayed Au/BIG and trilayered Au/BIG/Au magneto-plasmonic crystals (MPCs) were analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain method. In contrast to the low deflection angle and transmission of the smooth thin film, all the heterostructures with perforated holes in the top Au film displayed a similar trend with two strong resonant bands in Faraday rotation and transmittance in the near infrared wavelength range. The bands and electric distribution relative to the component and hole structure were revealed. The MPC with plasmonic hexagonal holes was found to own superior Faraday effects with distinctive anisotropy. The evolution of the resonant bands with the size and period of hexagonal holes, the thickness of different layers, and the incident light polarization was illustrated. The Faraday rotation of the optimized bilayed and trilayered hexagonal MPCs was improved 15.3 and 17.5 times, and the transmittance was enhanced 12.1 and 11.1 folds respectively at the resonant wavelength in comparison to the continuous Au/BIG film, indicating that the systems might find potential application in MO devices.

Enantioselective construction of molecules bearing multiple stereogenic elements is increasingly related to the synthesis of enantiopure natural products, pharmaceuticals, and functional materials. However, atom-economical and enantioselective approaches to install multiple stereogenic elements in a small molecular template by limited chemical transformation remain challenging. We describe an organocatalytic enantioselective method for the preparation of polychiral molecules bearing four types of stereogenic elements in fused azepines via vinylidene ortho-quinone methide (VQM)-mediated intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution. This method was proved robust with a wide range of substrate scope (46-92 % yield), with excellent diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivity achieved (up to 97 % ee). Phototreatment is at the leading edge of a research hot topic as a driving force for structural transformation, spectral and electromagnetism improvements, and the functional performance of nanomaterials. Light irradiation can excite surface plasmons in noble metal nanoparticles, create electron-hole pairs, and produce charge transfer in semiconductor substrates, which have led to it being widely used in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for life sciences, environmental protection, and biological analysis. Photo-induced enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PIERS) is a new technology developed on the basis of traditional SERS and has proven to be an efficient way to resolve several critical challenges thanks to its incomparable superiority for incontiguous operation, efficient charge separation and enrichment, and a large signal enhancement for a wide range of biomolecules at the trace level. This makes PIERS a powerful technique with very appealing and promising applications in various branches of analytical science. In this review, the enhancement mechanisms of PIERS are analyzed in comparison with SERS. Afterward, the parameters influencing the enhancement of PIERS, including the substrate, light irradiation, and relaxation are discussed in detail. Finally, some perspectives on further developments of PIERS are exemplified. The PIERS technique will continue to evolve and grow with new developments and its successful application in bioanalysis and life sciences.

The applications of a newly designed chiral naphthyl-C2-indole bifunctional phosphine organocatalyst in stereoselective formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions were reported. The chiral naphthyl-C2-indole skeleton was introduced to bifunctional phosphine organocatalysis for the first time, and excellent stereocontrol was achieved in two types of formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions. With the optimal catalyst, a series of chiral spirooxindole and hydrodibenzofuran architectures were produced in moderate to good yields with excellent stereoselectivities (up to >99% ee, >20:1 dr).

An unprecedented highly diastereoselective dimerization of 2-alkynylnaphthols is presented to furnish bridged polycyclic compounds containing a bicyclo[3.2.1]octane moiety with good to excellent yields. The reaction proceeded under mild conditions using N -iodosuccinimide as a promoter, simultaneously constructing one new C-O bond and two new C-C bonds. A tetra-substituted vinylidene ortho -quinone methide intermediate was likely involved, and the steric hindrance of substituents played a critical role in this transformation.

An organocatalyzed enantioselective γ-elimination process has been achieved and applied in the kinetic resolution of peroxides to access chiral peroxides and epoxides. The reaction provided a pathway for the preparation of two useful synthetic and biologically important structural motifs through a single-step reaction. A range of substrates has been resolved with a selectivity factor up to 63. The obtained enantioenriched peroxides and epoxides allowed a series of transformations with retained optical purities.

Purpose: To determine the safe range of shortening the spinal column at middle thoracic spine and to observe the changes in blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB), microglia/macrophage activation and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity after shortening-induced spinal cord injury., Methods: Dogs were allocated to four groups. Group A (control) underwent laminectomy of T7 without shortening the spinal column. Groups B, C and D had 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of T7 resected, respectively, followed by spinal shortening. Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) and hind-limb function were recorded periodically for 14 days after operation. Spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) and BSCB were detected at the acute phase of shortening. Microglia/macrophage reactions and iNOS activity were observed by immunohistochemistry., Results: Shortening of 1/3 of a vertebral height caused no significant changes in SSEP and hind-limb function after operation, whereas shortening of 1/2 of the height caused SSEP abnormality and paraparesis, and severe neurologic deficit of hind-limb was observed when the shortening reached 2/3 of the height. SCBF increased temporarily and showed a trend of recovery when the shortening was within 1/2 of a vertebral segment height. When it reached 1/2 or 2/3 of the height, SCBF at 6 h post-operation was 86.33% or 74.95% of the baseline, and an increasing BSCB permeability was observed. In the subsequent 7 days, obvious activation of macrophage and increased number of iNOS-positive cells were observed., Conclusion: It is safe to shorten the spinal cord within 1/3 of a vertebral height in middle thoracic spine under two-segment laminectomy in canine. The BSCB disruption, macrophage activation, and increased iNOS activity were observed in the acute phase of the injury. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

Organocatalytic selenosulfonylation of the C-C double bond of α,β-unsaturated ketones to construct two contiguous stereogenic centers in an aqueous medium was described. A series of α-selenyl and β-sulfonyl ketones with various functional groups were synthesized in good yields and enantioselectivities with saturated NaCl solution as the solvent. In addition, this protocol had been successfully scaled up to a decagram scale via a simple workup procedure.

A metal-free difunctionalization of alkynes to access tetrasubstituted olefins through spontaneous selenosulfonylation of vinylidene ortho-quinone methide (VQM) was described herein. The reaction was conducted under mild conditions without any catalysts or additives. Preliminary mechanism studies revealed that the formation of VQM was the key for this alkyne di-functionalization reaction. The reaction could be applied in the enantioselective asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral styrene. Furthermore, the selenosulfonylation adducts can be transformed into useful naphtho[2,1-b]furan and benzofuran scaffolds.

The elongation and length contraction in multi-walled carbon nanotubes without/with metal (Au) nanoparticles under focused electron beam irradiation is in situ studied experimentally at room temperature with transmission electron microscopy. It is observed that the plastic flow and direct evaporation of carbon atoms strongly rely on the nanoscaled negative curvature and surface energy of the nanotubes. The multi-walled carbon nanotubes without metal nanoparticles shrink and elongate by the diffusion and plastic flow of carbon atoms along the shells in the tube axis direction by self contraction of shells. In contrast, multi-walled carbon nanotubes with metal nanoparticles shrink and reduce their lengths by direct evaporation (sputtering) of carbon atoms into the free space under passivation by the metal nanoparticles. Thus, experimental demonstration is provided that the non-uniform structural evolution process in multi-walled carbon nanotubes induced fleetly by the nanoscaled negative curvature effect under athermal activation effect of electron beam passivates by metal nanoparticles.

ZnO/Si nanowire arrays with hierarchical architecture were synthesized by solution method with ZnO seed layer grown by atomic layer deposition and magnetron sputtering, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the as-grown tree-like arrays was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under ultraviolet light at ambient temperature. The comparison of morphology, crystal structure, optical properties, and photocatalysis efficiency of the two samples in different seeding processes was conducted. It was found that the ZnO/Si nanowire arrays presented a larger surface area with better crystalline and more uniform ZnO branches on the whole sidewall of Si backbones for the seed layer by atomic layer deposition, which gained a strong light absorption as high as 98% in the ultraviolet and visible range. The samples were proven to have a potential use in photocatalyst, but suffered from photodissolution and memory effect. The mechanism of the photocatalysis was analyzed, and the stability and recycling ability were also evaluated and enhanced.

High-efficient, plasmon-enhanced nonlinear phenomena based on hybrid nanostructures, which combine nonlinear dielectrics with plasmonic metals, are of fundamental importance for various applications ranging from all-optical switching to imaging or bio-sensing. However, the high loss of the excitation energy in nanostructures and the poor spatial overlap between the plasmon enhancement and the bulk of nonlinear materials largely limit the operation of plasmon-enhanced nonlinear effects, resulting in low nonlinear conversion efficiency. Here, we design and fabricate a ZnO-covered, 2D silver-bowl array, which can serve as an efficient platform for plasmon-enhanced second-harmonic generation (PESHG). Validated by experiments and simulations, we demonstrate that the high spatial overlap between the near-field enhancement and the ZnO film plays the key role for this nanostructure-based PESHG process. The enhancement mainly originates from the fundamental wavelength-derived plasmon resonance, providing an enhancement factor of approximately 33 times. These results achieved pave the way for future applications, which require localized light sources at nanoscale.

Astragaloside IV is a monomer isolated from Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge, which is one of the most widely used plant-derived drugs in traditional Chinese medicine for diabetes therapy. In the present study, we aimed to examine the effects of astragaloside IV on glucose in C2C12 myotubes and the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for these effects. Four-day differentiated C2C12 myotubes were exposed to palmitate for 16 h in order to establish a model of insulin resistance and 3H glucose uptake, using 2-Deoxy‑D‑[1,2-3H(N)]-glucose (radiolabeled 2-DG), was detected. Astragaloside IV was added 2 h prior to palmitate exposure. The translocation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) was evaluated by subcellular fractionation, and the expression of insulin signaling molecules such as insulin receptor β (IRβ), insulin receptor substrate (IRS)1/protein kinase B (AKT) and inhibitory κB kinase (IKK)/inhibitor-κBα (IκBα), which are associated with insulin signal transduction, were assessed in the basal or the insulin‑stimulated state using western blot analysis or RT-PCR. We also examined the mRNA expression of monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and Toll‑like receptor 4 (TLR4). Taken together, these findings demonstrated that astragaloside IV facilitates glucose transport in C2C12 myotubes through a mechanism involving the IRS1/AKT pathway, and suppresses the palmitate-induced activation of the IKK/IκBα pathway.

In this work, it was investigated how to measure Seebeck coefficient accurately. The offset voltages, between the specimen and measurement wires, might influence the results measured significantly and should be eliminated during measuring process. They do not depend on temperature difference but on temperature and include two parts: the intrinsic component related to the materials and the random one related to the contact. The inversion method could eliminate the offset voltages more accurately than the traditional differential methods, and thus measure Seebeck coefficient more accurately. The accuracy of Seebeck coefficient measurement could be further improved by performing a proper temperature difference, optimizing temperature control, and using an electromagnetic screen. The most accurate results were obtained with a standard deviation of 0.06 μV/K, measured under temperature difference of 1 K, temperature variation of 0.002 K, and with an iron electromagnetic screen.

Regioselective modification is an effective approach to synthesize polysaccharides with different structure features and improved properties. In this study, regioselective sulfation of Artemisia sphaerocephala polysaccharide (SRSASP) was prepared by using triphenylchloromethane (TrCl) as protecting precursor. The decrease in fractal dimension (df) values (1.56-2.04) of SRSASP was observed in size-exclusion chromatography combined with multi angle laser light scattering (SEC-MALLS) analysis. Compared to sample substituted at C-6, SRSASP showed a more expanded conformation of random coil, which was attributed to the breakup of hydrogen bonds and elastic contributions. Circular dichroism (CD), methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) spectrophotometric method and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results confirmed the conformational transition and stiffness of the chains after sulfation. SRSASP exhibited enhanced antioxidant activities in the DPPH, superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging assay. Sulfation at C-2 or C-3 was favorable for the chelation which might prevent the generation of hydroxyl radicals. Background: Elcatonin (ECT) is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis. However, little is known about its effect on the disuse osteoporosis (DOP). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of ECT on DOP caused by fracture fixation., Methods: Forty-five male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, aged 6 weeks, were randomly allocated into three groups: the control group without surgery and elcatonin treatment (CTR, n = 15), the surgery group without elcatonin treatment (SUR, n = 15), and the surgery group which received elcatonin subcutaneously (SUR + ECT, n = 15). Surgery was produced by cutting the midshaft of the right femur transversely, fixing with stainless intramedullary needle, and immobilizing the right leg. All the proximal tibias from the random five rats in each group were harvested and investigated by evaluating bone mineral density (BMD), X-ray images, and histological staining respectively at the 4th, 8th, and 12th weeks after surgery., Results: Both of the SUR and SUR + ECT groups obviously exhibited lower BMD values compared to the CTR group; however, the SUR + ECT group showed significantly higher BMD values (p < 0.001, p < 0.05, and p < 0.05) than the SUR group at each time point after surgery. Moreover, similar changes were observed between these groups when examining the radiographs and hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining., Conclusions: Elcatonin attenuates disuse osteoporosis after fractures in rats, which may provide a new avenue to prevent and treat disuse osteoporosis after surgery in clinic.

Background: Climate change and the concurrent change in wildfire events and land use comprehensively affect carbon dynamics in both spatial and temporal dimensions. The purpose of this study was to project the spatial and temporal aspects of carbon storage in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) under these changes from 2006 to 2050. We selected three emission scenarios and produced simulations with the CENTURY model using three General Circulation Models (GCMs) for each scenario. We also incorporated projected land use change and fire occurrence into the carbon accounting., Results: The three GCMs showed increases in maximum and minimum temperature, but precipitation projections varied among GCMs. Total ecosystem carbon increased steadily from 7,942 gC/m 2 in 2006 to 10,234 gC/m 2 in 2050 with an annual rate increase of 53 gC/m 2 /year. About 56.6% and 27% of the increasing rate was attributed to total live carbon and total soil carbon, respectively. Net Primary Production (NPP) increased slightly from 260 gC/m 2 /year in 2006 to 310 gC/m 2 /year in 2050 with an annual rate increase of 1.22 gC/m 2 /year. Forest clear-cutting and fires resulted in direct carbon removal; however, the rate was low at 2.44 gC/m 2 /year during 2006-2050. The area of clear-cutting and wildfires in the GYE would account for 10.87% of total forested area during 2006-2050, but the predictive simulations demonstrated different spatial distributions in national forests and national parks., Conclusions: The GYE is a carbon sink during 2006-2050. The capability of vegetation is almost double that of soil in terms of sequestering extra carbon. Clear-cutting and wildfires in GYE will affect 10.87% of total forested area, but direct carbon removal from clear-cutting and fires is 109.6 gC/m 2 , which accounts for only 1.2% of the mean ecosystem carbon level of 9,056 gC/m 2 , and thus is not significant.

A rational approach for creating branched ZnO/Si nanowire arrays with hierarchical structure was developed based on a combination of three simple and cost-effective synthesis pathways. The crucial procedure included growth of crystalline Si nanowire arrays as backbones by chemical etching of Si substrates, deposition of ZnO thin film as a seed layer by magnetron sputtering, and fabrication of ZnO nanowire arrays as branches by hydrothermal growth. The successful synthesis of ZnO/Si heterogeneous nanostructures was confirmed by morphologic, structural, and optical characterizations. The roles of key experimental parameters, such as the etchant solution, the substrate direction, and the seed layer on the hierarchical nanostructure formation, were systematically investigated. It was demonstrated that an etchant solution with an appropriate redox potential of the oxidant was crucial for a moderate etching speed to achieve a well-aligned Si nanowire array with solid and round surface. Meanwhile, the presence of gravity gradient was a key issue for the growth of branched ZnO nanowire arrays. The substrate should be placed vertically or facedown in contrast to the solution surface during the hydrothermal growth. Otherwise, only the condensation of the ZnO nanoparticles took place in a form of film on the substrate surface. The seed layer played another important role in the growth of ZnO nanowire arrays, as it provided nucleation sites and determined the growing direction and density of the nanowire arrays for reducing the thermodynamic barrier. The results of this study might provide insight on the synthesis of hierarchical three-dimensional nanostructure materials and offer an approach for the development of complex devices and advanced applications.

Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) receptor-1 (LOX-1) was originally identified as a receptor for oxLDL predominantly expressed in endothelial cells. Recently up-regulation of LOX-1 has been implicated in oxidative stress and cell apoptosis in many cell types. However, LOX-1 expression in neurons or regulation of neuronal apoptosis by LOX-1 has not been reported. To investigate the possible roles of LOX-1 in hypertension induced brain damage, we examined the distribution of LOX-1 in cortex and hippocampus and compared its expression in 32-week-old SHR and WKY rats. Immunofluorescence revealed that LOX-1 positive cells were located principally at the cortex involved in sensory information processing and were mainly expressed in neurons. We also found up-regulated mRNA expression of LOX-1, Bax and caspase-3 and down-regulated mRNA expression of Bcl-2 in SHR group. Compared with WKY group, SHR group showed increased LOX-1 positive cells and TUNEL positive cells. Furthermore, double-labeling method indicated that LOX-1 expression was colocalized with TUNEL positive cells, which means that LOX-1 expression was involved in hypertension related cell apoptosis. These findings indicated that LOX-1 expression was up-regulated in the cortex of SHR and its expression has implication in neuronal apoptosis. Background: A simulation model based on remote sensing data for spatial vegetation properties has been used to estimate ecosystem carbon fluxes across Yellowstone National Park (YNP). The CASA (Carnegie Ames Stanford Approach) model was applied at a regional scale to estimate seasonal and annual carbon fluxes as net primary production (NPP) and soil respiration components. Predicted net ecosystem production (NEP) flux of CO2 is estimated from the model for carbon sinks and sources over multi-year periods that varied in climate and (wildfire) disturbance histories. Monthly Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) image coverages from the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument (from 2000 to 2006) were direct inputs to the model. New map products have been added to CASA from airborne remote sensing of coarse woody debris (CWD) in areas burned by wildfires over the past two decades., Results: Model results indicated that relatively cooler and wetter summer growing seasons were the most favorable for annual plant production and net ecosystem carbon gains in representative landscapes of YNP. When summed across vegetation class areas, the predominance of evergreen forest and shrubland (sagebrush) cover was evident, with these two classes together accounting for 88% of the total annual NPP flux of 2.5 Tg C yr-1 (1 Tg = 1012 g) for the entire Yellowstone study area from 2000-2006. Most vegetation classes were estimated as net ecosystem sinks of atmospheric CO2 on annual basis, making the entire study area a moderate net sink of about +0.13 Tg C yr-1. This average sink value for forested lands nonetheless masks the contribution of areas burned during the 1988 wildfires, which were estimated as net sources of CO2 to the atmosphere, totaling to a NEP flux of -0.04 Tg C yr-1 for the entire burned area. Several areas burned in the 1988 wildfires were estimated to be among the lowest in overall yearly NPP, namely the Hellroaring Fire, Mink Fire, and Falls Fire areas., Conclusions: Rates of recovery for burned forest areas to pre-1988 biomass levels were estimated from a unique combination of remote sensing and CASA model predictions. Ecosystem production and carbon fluxes in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) result from complex interactions between climate, forest age structure, and disturbance-recovery patterns of the landscape.

Attenuation of radar signals by vegetation can be a problem for target detection and GPS reception, and is an important parameter in models describing vegetation backscatter. Here we first present a model describing the 3D distribution of stem and foliage structure based on small footprint scanning LIDAR data. Secondly we present a model that uses ray-tracing methodology to record detailed interactions between simulated radar beams and vegetation components. These interactions are combined over the SAR aperture and used to predict two-way attenuation of the SAR signal. Accuracy of the model is demonstrated using UHF SAR observations of large trihedral corner reflectors in coniferous forest stands. Our study showed that the model explains between 66% and 81% of the variability in observed attenuation.

Type II DNA topoisomerases catalyze changes in DNA topology and use nucleotide binding and hydrolysis to control conformational changes required for the enzyme reaction. We examined the ATP hydrolysis activity of a bisdioxopiperazine-resistant mutant of human topoisomerase II alpha with phenylalanine substituted for tyrosine at residue 50 in the ATP hydrolysis domain of the enzyme. This substitution reduced the DNA-dependent ATP hydrolysis activity of the mutant protein without affecting the relaxation activity of the enzyme. A similar but stronger effect was seen when the homologous mutation (Tyr28 --> Phe) was introduced in yeast Top2. The ATPase activities of human TOP2alpha(Tyr50 --> Phe) and yeast Top2(Tyr28 --> Phe) were resistant to both bisdioxopiperazines and the ATPase inhibitor sodium orthovanadate. Like bisdioxopiperazines, vanadate traps the enzyme in a salt-stable closed conformation termed the closed clamp, which can be detected in the presence of circular DNA substrates. Consistent with the vanadate-resistant ATPase activity, salt-stable closed clamps were not detected in reactions containing the yeast or human mutant protein, vanadate, and ATP. Similarly, ADP trapped wild-type topoisomerase II as a closed clamp, but could not trap either the human or yeast mutant enzymes. Our results demonstrate that bisdioxopiperazine-resistant mutants exhibit a difference in the stability of the closed clamp formed by the enzyme and that this difference in stability may lead to a loss of DNA-stimulated ATPase. We suggest that the DNA-stimulated ATPase of topoisomerase II is intimately connected with steps that occur while the N-terminal domain of the enzyme is dimerized.
