The aim of this study was to assess the changes in strongylid communities of domestic horses after two decades of regular anthelmintic treatments; the changes in prevalence and relative abundance of individual strongylid species and their contribution to the observed alterations were estimated. The study was conducted in 2023; data collected in 2004 were used for comparison; 39 horses from two farms in Ukraine (22 horses in 2004 and 17 in 2023) were examined. In total, 18,999 strongylid specimens were collected by in vivo diagnostic deworming method before (in 2004, 9119 specimens) and after (in 2023, 9880 specimens) frequent application of anthelmintics. Strongylids were identified morphologically. Thirteen strongylid species were found in horses in 2023; only small strongylids (Cyathostominae) were recorded. In 2004, 21 species were found: 6 species of large strongylids (Strongylinae) and 15 of cyathostomins. Species richness (Margalef's index) and species diversity (Shannon's and Simpson's indexes) decreased over two decades on both farms; the Berger-Parker dominance index for C. nassatus dramatically increased up to 74.4. The dissimilarity of strongylid communities of 2023 and 2004 was primarily connected with the disappearance of large strongylids and rare cyathostomin species after two decades of regular anthelmintic treatments. SIMPER analysis revealed that C. nassatus and C. catinatum mostly contributed to this dissimilarity. Artificial intelligence technologies are becoming increasingly prevalent in resource-constrained, safety-critical embedded systems. Numerous methods exist to enhance the resilience of AI systems against disruptive influences. However, when resources are limited, ensuring cost-effective resilience becomes crucial. A promising approach for reducing the resource consumption of AI systems during test-time involves applying the concepts and methods of dynamic neural networks. Nevertheless, the resilience of dynamic neural networks against various disturbances remains underexplored. This paper proposes a model architecture and training method that integrate dynamic neural networks with a focus on resilience. Compared to conventional training methods, the proposed approach yields a 24% increase in the resilience of convolutional networks and a 19.7% increase in the resilience of visual transformers under fault injections. Additionally, it results in a 16.9% increase in the resilience of convolutional network ResNet-110 and a 21.6% increase in the resilience of visual transformer DeiT-S under adversarial attacks, while saving more than 30% of computational resources. Meta-training the neural network model improves resilience to task changes by an average of 22%, while achieving the same level of resource savings.

The analysis of utilising unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to form flying networks in obstacle conditions and various algorithms for obstacle avoidance is conducted. A planning scheme for deploying a flying LiFi network based on UAVs in a production facility with obstacles is developed and described. Such networks are necessary to ensure reliable data transmission from sensors or other sources of information located in dangerous or hard-to-reach places to the crisis centre. Based on the planning scheme, the following stages are described: (1) laying the LiFi signal propagation route in conditions of interference, (2) placement of the UAV at the specified points of the laid route for the deployment of the LiFi network, and (3) ensuring the reliability of the deployed LiFi network. Strategies for deploying UAVs from a stationary depot to form a flying LiFi network in a room with obstacles are considered, namely the strategy of the first point for the route, the strategy of radial movement, and the strategy of the middle point for the route. Methods for ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of the flying LiFi network with the required level of reliability within a given time are developed and discussed. To implement the planning stages for deploying the UAV flying LiFi network in a production facility with obstacles, the "Simulation Way" and "Reliability Level" software tools are developed and described. Examples of utilising the proposed software tools are given.

The dynamics of the backbone and side-chains of protein are routinely studied by interpreting experimentally determined 15 N spin relaxation rates. R 1 ( 15 N), the longitudinal relaxation rate, reports on fast motions and encodes, together with the transverse relaxation R 2 , structural information about the shape of the molecule and the orientation of the amide bond vectors in the internal diffusion frame. Determining error-free 15 N longitudinal relaxation rates remains a challenge for small, disordered, and medium-sized proteins. Here, we show that mono-exponential fitting is sufficient, with no statistical preference for bi-exponential fitting up to 800 MHz. A detailed comparison of the TROSY and HSQC techniques at medium and high fields showed no statistically significant differences. The least error-prone DD/CSA interference removal technique is the selective inversion of amide signals while avoiding water resonance. The exchange of amide with solvent deuterons appears to affect the rate R 1 of solvent-exposed amides in all fields tested and in each DD/CSA interference removal technique in a statistically significant manner. In summary, the most accurate R 1 ( 15 N) rates in proteins are achieved by selective amide inversion, without the addition of D 2 O. Importantly, at high magnetic fields stronger than 800 MHz, when non-mono-exponential decay is involved, it is advisable to consider elimination of the shortest delays (typically up to 0.32 s) or bi-exponential fitting., (© 2024. The enhancement of the plant seed yield and quality represents the basis of the successful productivity of the deriving crop. The effect of single and combined foliar treatments of lettuce plants with sodium selenate and garlic bulb extract on seed yield and quality and on mature plant biochemical characteristics was investigated using four lettuce cultivars (Bouquet, Picnic, Moskovsky parnikovy and Cavalier). The seed production of plants treated with Se increased by 20-41%, compared to the untreated control plants, while the augmentation was as much as 10-23% and 17-27% under garlic extract and the joint application of Se and garlic, respectively. Garlic extract stimulated the accumulation of Se in lettuce seeds, which rose by 1.21-1.29 times compared to the Se-treated plants. The proline levels in lettuce seeds exceeded the corresponding values recorded in the control ones by 1.32-1.64 times in the case of the Se supply, 1.10-1.47 times upon garlic extract application and 1.09-1.31 times under the combined Se/garlic treatment. All the treatments given to lettuce plants increased the leaf weight by 1.10-1.30 times, compared to the untreated control. The seed Se levels positively correlated with the leaf weight (r = 0.621; p < 0.005), chlorophyll (r = 0.672, p < 0.002) and total antioxidant activity (AOA; r = 0.730, p < 0.001) of plants grown from these seeds. Positive correlations were also recorded between the seed proline content and lettuce plant leaf weight, chlorophyll and AOA (r = 0.868, 0.811 and 0.815, respectively, at p < 0.001). Lettuce yield was positively correlated with the leaf AOA, chlorophyll and ascorbic acid content (r = 0.942, 0.921 and 0.665, respectively, at p < 0.001). The results indicate high prospects of Na 2 SeO 4 and garlic extract application to seed-addressed lettuce plants, to improve seed productivity and quality, as well as lettuce yield and quality.

Background: The healthcare sector demands a higher degree of responsibility, trustworthiness, and accountability when implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. Machine learning operations (MLOps) for AI-based medical diagnostic systems are primarily focused on aspects such as data quality and confidentiality, bias reduction, model deployment, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement. However, so far, MLOps techniques do not take into account the need to provide resilience to disturbances such as adversarial attacks, including fault injections, and drift, including out-of-distribution. This article is concerned with the MLOps methodology that incorporates the steps necessary to increase the resilience of an AI-based medical diagnostic system against various kinds of disruptive influences., Methods: Post-hoc resilience optimization, post-hoc predictive uncertainty calibration, uncertainty monitoring, and graceful degradation are incorporated as additional stages in MLOps. To optimize the resilience of the AI based medical diagnostic system, additional components in the form of adapters and meta-adapters are utilized. These components are fine-tuned during meta-training based on the results of adaptation to synthetic disturbances. Furthermore, an additional model is introduced for post-hoc calibration of predictive uncertainty. This model is trained using both in-distribution and out-of-distribution data to refine predictive confidence during the inference mode., Results: The structure of resilience-aware MLOps for medical diagnostic systems has been proposed. Experimentally confirmed increase of robustness and speed of adaptation for medical image recognition system during several intervals of the system's life cycle due to the use of resilience optimization and uncertainty calibration stages. The experiments were performed on the DermaMNIST dataset, BloodMNIST and PathMNIST. ResNet-18 as a representative of convolutional networks and MedViT-T as a representative of visual transformers are considered. It is worth noting that transformers exhibited lower resilience than convolutional networks, although this observation may be attributed to potential imperfections in the architecture of adapters and meta-adapters., Сonclusion: The main novelty of the suggested resilience-aware MLOps methodology and structure lie in the separating possibilities and activities on creating a basic model for normal operating conditions and ensuring its resilience and trustworthiness. This is significant for the medical applications as the developer of the basic model should devote more time to comprehending medical field and the diagnostic task at hand, rather than specializing in system resilience. Corruption in healthcare has become transnational and intersectoral in nature; leading countries around the world have become vulnerable and insufficiently prepared to address health crises. The article deals with topical issues of corruption in healthcare during the Covid-19 pandemic in public and private sectors. Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) technologies play an important role in the architecture of modern cyber protection tools. One of the main scenarios for the use of SIEM is the detection of attacks on protected information infrastructure. Consorting that ISO 27001, NIST SP 800-61, and NIST SP 800-83 standards objectively do not keep up with the evolution of cyber threats, research aimed at forecasting the development of cyber epidemics is relevant. The article proposes a stochastic concept of describing variable small data on the Shannon entropy basis. The core of the concept is the description of small data by linear differential equations with stochastic characteristic parameters. The practical value of the proposed concept is embodied in the method of forecasting the development of a cyber epidemic at an early stage (in conditions of a lack of empirical information). In the context of the research object, the stochastic characteristic parameters of the model are the generation rate, the death rate, and the independent coefficient of variability of the measurement of the initial parameter of the research object. Analytical expressions for estimating the probability distribution densities of these characteristic parameters are proposed. It is assumed that these stochastic parameters of the model are imposed on the intervals, which allows for manipulation of the nature and type of the corresponding functions of the probability distribution densities. The task of finding optimal functions of the probability distribution densities of the characteristic parameters of the model with maximum entropy is formulated. The proposed method allows for generating sets of trajectories of values of characteristic parameters with optimal functions of the probability distribution densities. The example demonstrates both the flexibility and reliability of the proposed concept and method in comparison with the concepts of forecasting numerical series implemented in the base of Matlab functions., (© 2023. Explaining the complex structure and dynamics of sleep, which consist of alternating and physiologically distinct nonREM and REM sleep episodes, has posed a significant challenge. In this study, we demonstrate that a single-wave model concept captures the distinctly different overnight dynamics of the four primary sleep measures-the duration and intensity of nonREM and REM sleep episodes-with high quantitative precision for both regular and extended sleep. The model also accurately predicts how these polysomnographic measures respond to sleep deprivation or abundance. Furthermore, the model passes the ultimate test, as its prediction leads to a novel experimental finding-an invariant relationship between the duration of nonREM episodes and the intensity of REM episodes, the product of which remains constant over consecutive sleep cycles. These results suggest a functional unity between nonREM and REM sleep, establishing a comprehensive and quantitative framework for understanding normal sleep and sleep disorders.

The article is devoted to scientific biography of the prominent neuroanatomist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor L. A. Shangina, representative of the scientific school of Tonkov-Bushmakin. Her input into becoming of the chairs of normal anatomy of medical institutes in Irkutsk, Moscow, Kursk, Dushanbe (Tajikistan) and Smolensk and in organization of scientific community of neuromorphologists in the USSR in the middle and second half of the twentieth century is demonstrated. The special attention is paid to the results of scientific studies of L. A. Shangina and her post-graduate students of topography of nerves innervating human heart, of topography of accessory nerve (XI pair of cranial nerves), of structure of receptors of autonomic nervous system in walls of alimentary tract and urinary system.

The entropy-oriented approach called security- or cybersecurity-informed safety (SIS or CSIS, respectively) is discussed and developed in order to analyse and evaluate the safety and dependability of autonomous transport systems (ATSs) such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned maritime vehicles (UMVs), and satellites. This approach allows for extending and integrating the known techniques FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) and IMECA (Intrusion MECA), as well as developing the new SISMECA (SIS-based Intrusion Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) technique. The ontology model and templates for SISMECA implementation are suggested. The methodology of safety assessment is based on (i) the application and enhancement of SISMECA considering the particularities of various ATSs and roles of actors (regulators, developers, operators, customers); (ii) the development of a set of scenarios describing the operation of ATS in conditions of cyberattacks and physical influences; (iii) AI contribution to system protection for the analysed domains; (iv) scenario-based development and analysis of user stories related to different cyber-attacks, as well as ways to protect ATSs from them via AI means/platforms; (v) profiling of AI platform requirements by use of characteristics based on AI quality model, risk-based assessment of cyberattack criticality, and efficiency of countermeasures which actors can implement. Examples of the application of SISMECA assessment are presented and discussed.

The complex evaluation of varietal biochemical differences in rhubarb juice, pomace and roots is highly useful to develop an efficient processing technology. Research was carried out to compare four rhubarb cultivars (Malakhit, Krupnochereshkovy, Upryamets and Zaryanka) in terms of the quality and antioxidant parameters of juice, pomace and roots. The laboratory analyses showed a high juice yield (75-82%) with a relatively high content of ascorbic acid (125-164 mg L -1 ) and other organic acids (16-21 g L -1 ). Citric, oxalic and succinic acids accounted for 98% of the total acids amount. The juice of the cultivar Upryamets demonstrated high levels of the natural preservatives sorbic (36.2 mg L -1 ) and benzoic acids (11.7 mg L -1 ), which are highly valuable in juice production. The juice pomace proved to be an excellent source of pectin and dietary fiber, whose concentrations reached 21-24% and 59-64%, respectively. The total antioxidant activity decreased according to the following sequence: root pulp (161-232 mg GAE g -1 d.w.) > root peel (115-170 mg GAE g -1 d.w.) > juice pomace (28.3-34.4 mg GAE g -1 d.w.) > juice (4.4-7.6 mg GAE g -1 f.w.), suggesting that root pulp is a highly valuable antioxidant source. The results of this research highlight the interesting prospects of the complex rhubarb plant processing for the production of juice, containing a wide spectrum of organic acids and natural stabilizers (sorbic and benzoic acids), dietary fiber and pectin (juice pomace) and natural antioxidants (roots).

The article analytically summarizes the idea of applying Shannon's principle of entropy maximization to sets that represent the results of observations of the "input" and "output" entities of the stochastic model for evaluating variable small data. To formalize this idea, a sequential transition from the likelihood function to the likelihood functional and the Shannon entropy functional is analytically described. Shannon's entropy characterizes the uncertainty caused not only by the probabilistic nature of the parameters of the stochastic data evaluation model but also by interferences that distort the results of the measurements of the values of these parameters. Accordingly, based on the Shannon entropy, it is possible to determine the best estimates of the values of these parameters for maximally uncertain (per entropy unit) distortions that cause measurement variability. This postulate is organically transferred to the statement that the estimates of the density of the probability distribution of the parameters of the stochastic model of small data obtained as a result of Shannon entropy maximization will also take into account the fact of the variability of the process of their measurements. In the article, this principle is developed into the information technology of the parametric and non-parametric evaluation on the basis of Shannon entropy of small data measured under the influence of interferences. The article analytically formalizes three key elements: -instances of the class of parameterized stochastic models for evaluating variable small data; -methods of estimating the probability density function of their parameters, represented by normalized or interval probabilities; -approaches to generating an ensemble of random vectors of initial parameters.

Metal ions present in cellular microenvironment have been implicated as drivers of aggregation of amyloid forming proteins. Zinc (Zn 2+ ) ions have been reported to directly interact with α-synuclein (AS), a causative agent of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, and promote its aggregation. AS is a small intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) i.e., understanding molecular factors that drive its misfolding and aggregation has been challenging since methods used routinely to study protein structure are not effective for IDPs. Here, we report the atomic details of Zn 2+ binding to AS at physiologically relevant conditions using proton-less NMR techniques that can be applied to highly dynamic systems like IDPs. We also examined how human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant protein in human blood, binds to AS and whether Zn 2+ and/or ionic strength affect this. We conclude that Zn 2+ enhances the anti-aggregation chaperoning role of HSA that relies on protecting the hydrophobic N-terminal and NAC regions of AS, rather than polar negatively charged C-terminus. Efficient determination of protein ligandability, or the propensity to bind small-molecules, would greatly facilitate drug development for novel targets. Ligandability is currently assessed using computational methods that typically consider the static structural properties of putative binding sites or by experimental fragment screening. Here, we evaluate ligandability of conserved BTB domains from the cancer-relevant proteins LRF, KAISO, and MIZ1. Using fragment screening, we discover that MIZ1 binds multiple ligands. However, no ligands are uncovered for the structurally related KAISO or LRF. To understand the principles governing ligand-binding by BTB domains, we perform comprehensive NMR-based dynamics studies and find that only the MIZ1 BTB domain exhibits backbone µs-ms time scale motions. Interestingly, residues with elevated dynamics correspond to the binding site of fragment hits and recently defined HUWE1 interaction site. Our data argue that examining protein dynamics using NMR can contribute to identification of cryptic binding sites, and may support prediction of the ligandability of novel challenging targets., (© 2022. Chromatin marks are recognized by distinct binding modules, many of which are embedded in multidomain proteins. How the different functionalities of such complex chromatin modulators are regulated is often unclear. Here, we delineated the interplay of the H3 amino terminus- and K9me-binding activities of the multidomain hUHRF1 protein. We show that the phosphoinositide PI5P interacts simultaneously with two distant flexible linker regions connecting distinct domains of hUHRF1. The binding is dependent on both, the polar head group, and the acyl part of the phospholipid and induces a conformational rearrangement juxtaposing the H3 amino terminus and K9me3 recognition modules of the protein. In consequence, the two features of the H3 tail are bound in a multivalent, synergistic manner. Our work highlights a previously unidentified molecular function for PI5P outside of the context of lipid mono- or bilayers and establishes a molecular paradigm for the allosteric regulation of complex, multidomain chromatin modulators by small cellular molecules.

This paper suggests a methodology (conception and principles) for building two-mode monitoring systems (SMs) for industrial facilities and their adjacent territories based on the application of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twin (DT) technologies, and a set of SM reliability models considering the parameters of the channels and components. The concept of building a reliable and resilient SM is proposed. For this purpose, the von Neumann paradigm for the synthesis of reliable systems from unreliable components is developed. For complex SMs of industrial facilities, the concept covers the application of various types of redundancy (structural, version, time, and space) for basic components-sensors, means of communication, processing, and presentation-in the form of DTs for decision support systems. The research results include: the methodology for the building and general structures of UAV-, IoT-, and DT-based SMs in industrial facilities as multi-level systems; reliability models for SMs considering the applied technologies and operation modes (normal and emergency); and industrial cases of SMs for manufacture and nuclear power plants. The results obtained are the basis for further development of the theory and for practical applications of SMs in industrial facilities within the framework of the implementation and improvement of Industry 4.0 principles.

A semiclassical model describing the charge transfer collisions of C 60 fullerene with different slow ions has been developed to analyze available observations. These data reveal multiple Breit-Wigner-like peaks in the cross sections, with subsequent peaks of reactive cross sections decreasing in magnitude. Calculations of charge transfer probabilities, quasi-resonant cross sections, and cross sections for reactive collisions have been performed using semiempirical interaction potentials between fullerenes and ion projectiles. All computations have been carried out with realistic wave functions for C 60 's valence electrons derived from the simplified jellium model. The quality of these electron wave functions has been successfully verified by comparing theoretical calculations and experimental data on the small angle cross sections of resonant C 60 +C 60 + collisions. Using the semiempirical potentials to describe resonant scattering phenomena in C 60 collisions with ions and Landau-Zener charge transfer theory, we calculated theoretical cross sections for various C 60 charge transfer and fragmentation reactions which agree with experiments.

The factors complicating the specification of requirements for artificial intelligence systems (AIS) and their verification for the AIS creation and modernization are analyzed. The harmonization of definitions and building of a hierarchy of AIS characteristics for regulation of the development of techniques and tools for standardization, as well as evaluation and provision of requirements during the creation and implementation of AIS, is extremely important. The study aims to develop and demonstrate the use of quality models for artificial intelligence (AI), AI platform (AIP), and AIS based on the definition and ordering of characteristics. The principles of AI quality model development and its sequence are substantiated. Approaches to formulating definitions of AIS characteristics, methods of representation of dependencies, and hierarchies of characteristics are given. The definitions and harmonization options of hierarchical relations between 46 characteristics of AI and AIP are suggested. The quality models of AI, AIP, and AIS presented in analytical, tabular, and graph forms, are described. The so-called basic models with reduced sets of the most important characteristics are presented. Examples of AIS quality models for UAV video navigation systems and decision support systems for diagnosing diseases are described.

Digital images are used in various technological, financial, economic, and social processes. Huge datasets of high-resolution images require protected storage and low resource-intensive processing, especially when applying edge computing (EC) for designing Internet of Things (IoT) systems for industrial domains such as autonomous transport systems. For this reason, the problem of the development of image representation, which provides compression and protection features in combination with the ability to perform low complexity analysis, is relevant for EC-based systems. Security and privacy issues are important for image processing considering IoT and cloud architectures as well. To solve this problem, we propose to apply discrete atomic transform (DAT) that is based on a special class of atomic functions generalizing the well-known up-function of V.A. Rvachev. A lossless image compression algorithm based on DAT is developed, and its performance is studied for different structures of DAT. This algorithm, which combines low computational complexity, efficient lossless compression, and reliable protection features with convenient image representation, is the main contribution of the paper. It is shown that a sufficient reduction of memory expenses can be obtained. Additionally, a dependence of compression efficiency measured by compression ratio (CR) on the structure of DAT applied is investigated. It is established that the variation of DAT structure produces a minor variation of CR. A possibility to apply this feature to data protection and security assurance is grounded and discussed. In addition, a structure or file for storing the compressed and protected data is proposed, and its properties are considered. Multi-level structure for the application of atomic functions in image processing and protection for EC in IoT systems is suggested and analyzed.

Production of functional food with high levels of selenium (Se) and iodine (I) obtained via plant biofortification shows significant difficulties due to the complex interaction between the two elements. Taking into account the known beneficial effect of silicon (Si) on plant growth and development, single and joint foliar biofortification of chervil plants with potassium iodide (150 mg L -1 ) and sodium selenate (10 mg L -1 ) was carried out in a pot experiment with and without Si nanoparticles foliar supplementation. Compared to control plants, nano-Si (14 mg L -1 ) increased shoot biomass in all treatments: by 4.8 times with Si; by 2.8 times with I + Si; by 5.6 times with Se + Si; by 4.0 times with I + Se + Si. The correspondent increases in root biomass were 4.5, 8.7, 13.3 and 10.0 times, respectively. The growth stimulation effect of Se, I and I + Se treatments resulted in a 2.7, 3.5 and 3.6 times increase for chervil shoots and 1.6, 3.1 and 8.6 times for roots, respectively. Nano-Si improved I biofortification levels by twice, while I and Se enhanced the plant content of each other. All treatments decreased nitrate levels, compared to control, and increased the photopigment accumulation. Improvement of total antioxidant activity and phenolic content was recorded only under the joint application of Se + I + Si. Foliar nano-Si treatment affected other element content in plants: decreased Na + accumulation in single and joint supplementation with Se and I, restored Fe, Mn and Cr amount compared to the decreased levels recorded in separately Se and I fortified plants and promoted Al accumulation both with or without Se and I biofortification. The results of this research suggest high prospects of foliar nano-Si supply for enhancing both growth and joint I/Se biofortification of chervil.

The etiological role of NSD2 enzymatic activity in solid tumors is unclear. Here we show that NSD2, via H3K36me2 catalysis, cooperates with oncogenic KRAS signaling to drive lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) pathogenesis. In vivo expression of NSD2 E1099K , a hyperactive variant detected in individuals with LUAD, rapidly accelerates malignant tumor progression while decreasing survival in KRAS-driven LUAD mouse models. Pathologic H3K36me2 generation by NSD2 amplifies transcriptional output of KRAS and several complementary oncogenic gene expression programs. We establish a versatile in vivo CRISPRi-based system to test gene functions in LUAD and find that NSD2 loss strongly attenuates tumor progression. NSD2 knockdown also blocks neoplastic growth of PDXs (patient-dervived xenografts) from primary LUAD. Finally, a treatment regimen combining NSD2 depletion with MEK1/2 inhibition causes nearly complete regression of LUAD tumors. The cestode Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis, a severe helminthic zoonotic disease distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. The lifecycle of the parasite is mainly sylvatic, involving canid and rodent hosts. The absence of genetic data from most eastern European countries is a major knowledge gap, affecting the study of associations with parasite populations in Western Europe. In this study, EmsB microsatellite genotyping of E. multilocularis was performed to describe the genetic diversity and relatedness of 785 E. multilocularis isolates from four western and nine eastern European countries, as well as from Armenia and the Asian parts of Russia and Turkey. The presence of the same E. multilocularis populations in the Benelux resulting from expansion from the historical Alpine focus can be deduced from the main profiles shared between these countries. All 33 EmsB profiles obtained from 528 samples from the nine eastern European countries belonged to the European clade, except one Asian profile form Ryazan Oblast, Russia. The expansion of E. multilocularis seems to have progressed from the historical Alpine focus through Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and southern Poland towards Latvia and Estonia. Most of the samples from Asia belong to the Asian clade, with one EmsB profile shared between Armenia and Turkey, and two between Turkey and Russia. However, two European profiles were described from two foxes in Turkey, including one harboring worms from both European and Asian clades. Three EmsB profiles from three Russian samples were associated with the Arctic clade. Two E. multilocularis profiles from rodents from Lake Baikal belonged to the Mongolian clade, described for the first time here using EmsB. Further worldwide studies on the genetic diversity of E. multilocularis using both mitochondrial sequencing and EmsB genotyping are needed to understand the distribution and expansion of the various clades., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. The essentiality of selenium (Se) and iodine (I) to human beings and the widespread areas of selenium and iodine deficiency determine the high significance of functional food production with high levels of these elements. In this respect, joint biofortification of agricultural crops with Se and I is especially attractive. Nevertheless, in practice this topic has raised many problems connected with the possible utilization of many Se and I chemical forms, different doses and biofortification methods, and the existence of wide species and varietal differences. The limited reports relevant to this subject and the multiplicity of unsolved questions urge the need for an adequate evaluation of the results obtained up-to-date, useful for developing further future investigations. The present review discusses the outcome of joint plant Se-I biofortification, as well as factors affecting Se and I accumulation in plants, paying special attention to unsolved issues. A particular focus has been given to the prospects of herb sprouts production enriched with Se and I, as well as the interactions between the latter microelements and arbuscular-mycorrhizal fungi (AMF).

Amplification of chromosomal region 8p11-12 is a common genetic alteration that has been implicated in the aetiology of lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) 1-3 . The FGFR1 gene is the main candidate driver of tumorigenesis within this region 4 . However, clinical trials evaluating FGFR1 inhibition as a targeted therapy have been unsuccessful 5 . Here we identify the histone H3 lysine 36 (H3K36) methyltransferase NSD3, the gene for which is located in the 8p11-12 amplicon, as a key regulator of LUSC tumorigenesis. In contrast to other 8p11-12 candidate LUSC drivers, increased expression of NSD3 correlated strongly with its gene amplification. Ablation of NSD3, but not of FGFR1, attenuated tumour growth and extended survival in a mouse model of LUSC. We identify an LUSC-associated variant NSD3(T1232A) that shows increased catalytic activity for dimethylation of H3K36 (H3K36me2) in vitro and in vivo. Structural dynamic analyses revealed that the T1232A substitution elicited localized mobility changes throughout the catalytic domain of NSD3 to relieve auto-inhibition and to increase accessibility of the H3 substrate. Expression of NSD3(T1232A) in vivo accelerated tumorigenesis and decreased overall survival in mouse models of LUSC. Pathological generation of H3K36me2 by NSD3(T1232A) reprograms the chromatin landscape to promote oncogenic gene expression signatures. Furthermore, NSD3, in a manner dependent on its catalytic activity, promoted transformation in human tracheobronchial cells and growth of xenografted human LUSC cell lines with amplification of 8p11-12. Depletion of NSD3 in patient-derived xenografts from primary LUSCs containing NSD3 amplification or the NSD3(T1232A)-encoding variant attenuated neoplastic growth in mice. Finally, NSD3-regulated LUSC-derived xenografts were hypersensitive to bromodomain inhibition. Thus, our work identifies NSD3 as a principal 8p11-12 amplicon-associated oncogenic driver in LUSC, and suggests that NSD3-dependency renders LUSC therapeutically vulnerable to bromodomain inhibition.

The DNA-binding protein H-NS is a pleiotropic gene regulator in gram-negative bacteria. Through its capacity to sense temperature and other environmental factors, H-NS allows pathogens like Salmonella to adapt their gene expression to their presence inside or outside warm-blooded hosts. To investigate how this sensing mechanism may have evolved to fit different bacterial lifestyles, we compared H-NS orthologs from bacteria that infect humans, plants, and insects, and from bacteria that live on a deep-sea hypothermal vent. The combination of biophysical characterization, high-resolution proton-less nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular simulations revealed, at an atomistic level, how the same general mechanism was adapted to specific habitats and lifestyles. In particular, we demonstrate how environment-sensing characteristics arise from specifically positioned intra- or intermolecular electrostatic interactions. Intramolecular motions in proteins are one of the important factors that determine their biological activity and interactions with molecules of biological importance. Magnetic relaxation of 15 N amide nuclei allows one to monitor motions of protein backbone over a wide range of time scales. 15 N{ 1 H} nuclear Overhauser effect is essential for the identification of fast backbone motions in proteins. Therefore, exact measurements of NOE values and their accuracies are critical for determining the picosecond time scale of protein backbone. Measurement of dynamic NOE allows for the determination of NOE values and their probable errors defined by any sound criterion of nonlinear regression methods. The dynamic NOE measurements can be readily applied for non-deuterated or deuterated proteins in both HSQC and TROSY-type experiments. Comparison of the dynamic NOE method with commonly implied steady-state NOE is presented in measurements performed at three magnetic field strengths. It is also shown that improperly set NOE measurement cannot be restored with correction factors reported in the literature.

Chromatin signaling relies on a plethora of posttranslational modifications (PTM) of the histone proteins which package the long DNA molecules of our cells in reoccurring units of nucleosomes. Determining the biological function and molecular working mechanisms of different patterns of histone PTMs requires access to various chromatin substrates of defined modification status. Traditionally, these are achieved by individual reconstitution of single nucleosomes or arrays of nucleosomes in conjunction with modified histones produced by means of chemical biology. Here, we report an alternative strategy for establishing a library of differentially modified nucleosomes that bypasses the need for many individual syntheses, purification and assembly reactions by installing modified histone tails on ligation-ready, immobilized nucleosomes reconstituted in a single batch. Using the ligation-ready nucleosome strategy with sortase-mediated ligation for histone H3 and intein splicing for histone H2A, we generated libraries of up to 280 individually modified nucleosomes in 96-well plate format. Screening these libraries for the effects of patterns of PTMs onto the recruitment of a well-known chromatin factor, HP1 revealed a previously unknown long-range cross-talk between two modifications. H3S28 phosphorylation enhances recruitment of the HP1 protein to the H3K9 methylated H3-tail only in nucleosomal context. Detailed structural analysis by NMR measurements implies negative charges at position 28 to increase nucleosomal H3-tail dynamics and flexibility. Posterior reversible encephalopathy (PRES) is a clinical syndrome characterized by headaches, seizures, cortical blindness, and altered mental status up to coma and by a radiological syndrome defined by edematous alteration on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-Scans of the white matter. In the following, we present the case of a 73 years old post-operative patient with PRES in the context of hypertension and endocarditis with E. coli. The initial presentation included a series of seizures, sopor, and cortical blindness. In MRI-Scans a marked cerebral edema could be identified. After successful treatment of underlying conditions, the patient has made a good recovery. However, homonymous hemianopsia towards right due to laminar necrosis in the left occipital lobe remained as a residuum.

The objective of the article is a comparative and legal study of the models for the organization of public procurements in the healthcare field in the EU and Ukraine. Theoretical and empirical methods of cognition were used to achieve this goal, namely, methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, as well as comparative and legal method in analyzing the experience of the EU countries in organizing public procurements. The conducted study suggests that the public procurement mechanism in the healthcare sector exists in most states. However, the legal regulation in this area differs significantly in different states. It has been established that a significant part of the states use centralized procurements. The shortcomings of the legal regulation of public procurements in Ukraine have been revealed and the ways to solve them have been offered. The authors have indicated the necessity of using international experience in organizing public procurements in the healthcare sector, in particular, with respect to: centralized procurements with the introduction of procurement groups or consortia (Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy); activities of specially created centralized organizations (Austria, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Portugal) decentralized procurements (Sweden). In order to improve the legal regulation of public procurements in the healthcare field, the authors have proved the necessity of making amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On Public Procurements".

Neurogenesis in the adult brain, a powerful mechanism for neuronal plasticity and brain repair, is altered by aging and pathological conditions, including metabolic disorders. The search for mechanisms and therapeutic solutions to alter neurogenesis requires understanding of cell kinetics within neurogenic niches using a high-throughput quantitative approach. The challenge is in the dynamic nature of the process and multiple cell types involved, each having several potential modes of division or cell fate. Here we show that cell kinetics can be revealed through a combination of the BrdU/EdU pulse-chase, based on the circadian pattern of DNA replication, and a differential equations model that describes time-dependent cell densities. The model is validated through the analysis of cell kinetics in the cerebellar neurogenic niche of normal young adult male zebrafish, with cells quantified in 2D (sections), and with neuronal fate and reactivation of stem cells confirmed in 3D whole-brain images (CLARITY). We then reveal complex alterations in cell kinetics associated with accelerated aging due to chronic high caloric intake. Low activity of neuronal stem cells in this condition persists 2 months after reverting to normal diet, and is accompanied by overproduction of transient amplifying cells, their accelerated cell death, and slow migration of postmitotic progeny. This combined experimental and mathematical approach should allow for relatively high-throughput analysis of early signs of pathological and age-related changes in neurogenesis, evaluation of specific therapeutic targets, and drug efficacy. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Understanding normal cell kinetics of adult neurogenesis and the type of cells affected by a pathological process is needed to develop effective prophylactic and therapeutic measures directed at specific cell targets. Complex time-dependent mechanisms involved in the kinetics of multiple cell types require a combination of experimental and mathematical modeling approaches. The use of synthetic materials for biomedical applications still presents issues owing to the potential for unfavourable safety characteristics. Currently, there is increasing interest in using natural, marine-derived raw materials for bone tissue engineering. In our study, the endoskeleton of the mollusc Sepia, i.e. cuttlebone (CB), was used with regenerated cellulose (RC) to prepare three-dimensional composite bone grafts. CB microparticles were mechanically immobilised within a cellulose gel, resulting in a macroporous structure upon lyophilisation. The interconnected porous structure of the regenerated cellulose/cuttlebone (RC/CB) composite was evaluated by micro-computed tomography. The porosity of the composite was 80%, and the pore size predominantly ranged from 200 to 500 μm. The addition of CB microparticles increased the specific scaffold surface by almost threefold and was found to be approximately 40 mm -1 . The modulus of elasticity and compressive strength of the RC/CB composite were 4.0 ± 0.6 and 22.0 ± 0.9 MPa, respectively. The biocompatibility of the prepared RC/CB composite with rat hepatocytes and extensor digitorum longus muscle tissue was evaluated. The obtained data demonstrated that both the composite and cellulose matrix samples were non-cytotoxic and had no damaging effects. These results indicate that this RC/CB composite is a novel material suitable for bone tissue-engineering applications.

Ovarian cancer is a common pathology in the structure of tumors among elderly women. The aim of the work is to identify the leading indicators of interleukin profile to improve the diagnosis of ovarian cancer in the elderly. Enzyme immunoassay studied serum levels of interleukins in 78 patients with ovarian cancer stage IIB-IIIB according to the classification of FIGO at the age of 65-70 years and 42 women of similar age without ovarian cancer at the time of the study and in history. The differentiation of the compared groups is carried out by means of discriminant method. The leading diagnostic interleukins for ovarian cancer in the elderly are IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α. The constructed discriminant models allow to differentiate patients with ovarian cancer and control women with an accuracy of 93.2-93.8%. The glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in all countries. In the nearest years an increasing of patients with the given pathology is prognosticated. Nowadays, development of disease is related to alteration of interleukin profile in lacrimal fluid. however, diagnostic significance of interleukins is studied insufficiently. The purpose of study. To determine diagnostic significance of interleukins on a local level for amelioration of diagnostic and prognostication of development of glaucoma. The content of interleukins in lacrimal fluid was analyzed in 80 patients with glaucoma stage II and 45 healthy individuals using technique of sandwich-linked enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with calculation of informativeness of indices of immunity. The results. The analysis established high diagnostic significance of IL-2, IL-17, IL-8 for verification of glaucoma. They are proposed to be applied in laboratory diagnostic and prognostication of disease. The circadian system may regulate adult neurogenesis via intracellular molecular clock mechanisms or by modifying the environment of neurogenic niches, with daily variation in growth factors or nutrients depending on the animal's diurnal or nocturnal lifestyle. In a diurnal vertebrate, zebrafish, we studied circadian distribution of immunohistochemical markers of the cell division cycle (CDC) in 5 of the 16 neurogenic niches of adult brain, the dorsal telencephalon, habenula, preoptic area, hypothalamus, and cerebellum. We find that common to all niches is the morning initiation of G 1 /S transition and daytime S-phase progression, overnight increase in G 2 /M, and cycle completion by late night. This is supported by the timing of gene expression for critical cell cycle regulators cyclins D, A2, and B2 and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p20 in brain tissue. The early-night peak in p20 , limiting G 1 /S transition, and its phase angle with the expression of core clock genes, Clock1 and Per1 , are preserved in constant darkness, suggesting intrinsic circadian patterns of cell cycle progression. The statistical modeling of CDC kinetics reveals the significant circadian variation in cell proliferation rates across all of the examined niches, but interniche differences in the magnitude of circadian variation in CDC, S-phase length, phase angle of entrainment to light or clock, and its dispersion. We conclude that, in neurogenic niches of an adult diurnal vertebrate, the circadian modulation of cell cycle progression involves both systemic and niche-specific factors. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT This study establishes that in neurogenic niches of an adult diurnal vertebrate, the cell cycle progression displays a robust circadian pattern. Common to neurogenic niches located in diverse brain regions is daytime progression of DNA replication and nighttime mitosis, suggesting systemic regulation. Differences between neurogenic niches in the phase and degree of S-phase entrainment to the clock suggest additional roles for niche-specific regulatory mechanisms. Analysis of pathomorphological changes which taking place in muscle tissue after reperfusion of previously ischemic rats limbs allowed to identify three phases of the experimental reperfusion syndrome (RS): the first or ischemic, the second or initial reperfusional, the third or late reperfusional. Morphological changes of the skeletal muscles in the first stage are characterized by presence of dystrophic-necrotic processes and reflect the compensatory-adaptive reaction of the organism to hypoxia. In the third stage one can see the progress of morphological damages, which develop during the ischemic period against a background of exhaustion of proteinase inhibitors. This indicates the intensity of endogenous intoxication of the organism with the products of disturbed metabolism and determines the irreversibility of destructive processes and probability of multiple organ failure. Proceeding from the character of the pathomorphological changes and the state of proteinase-inhibitor system one can suppose, that the optimal time for medical measures is the first stage and the first hours of the second stage (to increase the ischemic tolerance of the skeletal muscles). Taking into account the direct relation between the intensity of pathomorphological injuries and the imbalance of proteinase-inhibitor system, the usage of proteinase-inhibiting medicines for correction of RS-development and reduction of the destructive changes during first and second stages is substantiated. When reperfusion syndrome lasts for a long time, medical measures become ineffective due to the high degree of pathological changes.

The results of the long term work of the Russian Scientific Centre of Roentgenology and Radiology on me- dical investigation of the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of Chernobyl power plant acci- dent have been summarized. It has been stated that circulatory system and tumor diseases occupy the leading position in the disease rate among the affected liquidators. The important role of cytogenetic investigation was pointed out. It allows us not only to determine the efficient impact on the human body but also to evaluate the effective dose of radiation, the information about which allows us to predict the development of distant post-irradiation pathology. The results of cytogenetic investigations testify to the interrelation between the level of chromosomal abnormalities and cardiovascular diseases and confirm the clinical data on the non- neoplastic.pathology among the liquidators of the accident.

Conducting postoperative radiotherapy in a mode of hypofranctionation with SFD-3Gy to TFD-36-39Gy (EQD2 = 43,246,8Gy) in combined treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer allows significantly increasing a 5-year disease-free survival at IIB-IIIB stages of the disease (pN1-2) as well as the central cancer, squamous cell morphological type of tumor after surgery in a volume of lob-bilobectomy. The clearest effect of postoperative radiotherapy is assessed by survival without locoregional recurrence where radiation therapy in the adjuvant setting allows achieving a statistically significant increase in local control of the disease to the level of 85-95% regardless of stage of the disease, tumor size, regional lymph nodes lesion and the surgical treatment.

It is presented 40-years experience of tracheal adenocystic carcinoma diagnosis and management in 144 patients. Peculiarities of clinical course and choice of diagnostic and therapeutic measures are discussed in relation to stenosis and hypoxia degree and severity of accompanying inflammatory complications of trachea, bronchi and lungs. Technical tools and original methods of resection and reconstruction of trachea and it's bifurcation after extended lung resection are described. Surgical management is carried out in 96 patients: all patients underwent circular resection of trachea (77) or it's bifurcation (19). Morbidity rate was 22.9% and mortality - 3.1%. Additional radiotherapy was carried out in 50 patients. 41 patients underwent radiotherapy alone. Radiotherapy improves remote results of management. 5-and 10-year survival rate was 78.3±6.1 and 45.9±7.9% after surgery alone, 92.0±3.9 and 77.1±6.5% after combined treatment and 76.4±6.5 and 55.0±10.7% after radiotherapy alone respectively.

Sphingolipids play an important role in the development of insulin resistance. Ceramides are the most potent inhibitors of insulin signal transduction. Ceramides are generated in response to stress stimuli and in old age. In this work, we studied the possible contribution of different pathways of sphingolipid metabolism in age-dependent insulin resistance development in liver cells. Inhibition of key enzymes of sphingolipid synthesis (serine palmitoyl transferase, ceramide synthase) and degradation (neutral and acidic SMases) by means of specific inhibitors (myriocin, fumonisin B1, imipramine, and GW4869) was followed with the reduction of ceramide level and partly improved insulin regulation of glucose metabolism in "old" hepatocytes. Imipramine and GW4869 decreased significantly the acidic and neutral SMase activities, respectively. Treatment of "old" cells with myriocin or fumonisin B1 reduced the elevated in old age ceramide and SM synthesis. Ceramide and SM levels and glucose metabolism regulation by insulin could be improved with concerted action of all tested inhibitors of sphingolipid turnover on hepatocytes. The data demonstrate that not only newly synthesized ceramide and SM but also neutral and acidic SMase-dependent ceramide accumulation plays an important role in development of age-dependent insulin resistance.

To confirm the hypothesis about the involvement of EGF-stimulated MAP-kinase ERK1/2 in the regulation of microtubule (MT) system, the influence of two widely used ERK1/2 inhibitors, U0126 and PD98059, on the organization of tubulin cytoskeleton in interphase HeLa cells during EGF receptor endocytosis has been investigated. We have found that addition of U0126 or PD98059 to not-stimulated with EGF ells for 30 min has no effect on radially organized MT system. However, in the case of U0126 addition before EGF endocytosis stimulation, the number of MT per cell decreased within 15 min after such stimulation and was followed by complete MT depolymerization by 60-90 min. Stimulation of EGF endocytosis in the presence of PD98059 resulted only in insignificant depolymerization of MT and it could be detected mainly from their minus-ends. At the same time, MT regions close to plasma membrane became stabilized, which was proved by increase in tubulin acetylation level. This situation was characteristic for all period of the experiment. It has been also found that the inhibitors affect endocytosis dynamics of EGF-receptor complexes. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that the stimulation of endocytosis in the presence of U0126 generated a greater number of endosomes compared to control cells, and their number did not change significantly during the experiment. All these endosomes were localized peripherally. Effect of PD98059 resulted in the formation of lower number of endosomes that in control, but they demonstrated very slow clusterization despite the presence of some intact MT. Both inhibitors decreased EGFR colocolization with early endosomal marker EEA1, which indicated a delay in endosome fusions and maturation. The inhibitors were also shown to affect differently phospho-ERK 1 and 2 forms: U0126 completely inhibited phospho-ERK1 and 2, white, in the presence of PD98059, the two ERK forms demonstrated sharp transient activation in 15 min after stimulation, but only phospho-ERK2 could be detected after 60 min of endocytosis. In both cases, MAP-kinase activation dynamics was significantly different from the control. Our results suggest involvement of EGF-stimulated MAP-kinase pathway in cytoskeleton regulation. At the same time, they demonstrate that the two studied and widely used inhibitors are not equivalent with respect to not only the effect on MAP-kinase activity but also to such interdependent processes such as changes in cytoskeleton organization and signaling receptor' endocytosis.

We report the results of quantum scattering calculations for the O((3)P)+H2 reaction for a range of collision energies from 0.4 to 4.4 eV, important for astrophysical and atmospheric processes. The total and state-to-state reactive cross sections are calculated using a fully quantum time-independent coupled-channel approach on recent potential energy surfaces of (3)A' and (3)A″ symmetry. A larger basis set than in the previous studies was used to ensure single-surface convergence at higher energies. Our results agree well with the published data at lower energies and indicate the breakdown of reduced dimensionality approach at collision energies higher than 1.5 eV. Differential cross sections and momentum transfer cross sections are also reported.

The aim of the article was to study the occurrence of periodontal diseases in children with type I diabetes mellitus. The examination of 78 children revealed periodontal diseases in 40 children with type I diabetes. OHI-S, CPITN, PMA indices were determined. Pathological changes in periodontal tissues were revealed in 100% of cases. The following were identified: gingival hemorrhage (100%), over - and under-gingival dental tartar (100%), inflammation of gingival papilla (87,5%) marginal (80%) and alveolar gingiva (55%). Spread of periodontal disease among children with I type diabetes is characterized as high and is equal to 100%. Degree of periodontal sickness is evaluated as average and is M=2,28; SD=0,47 according to CPITN index. Treatment and preventive measures should be carried out taking into account major somatic disease.

The aims of the study were to determine fecundity of several strongylid species parasitizing domestic horses and analyze possible relations between numbers of eggs in female uteri and size of both the eggs and the nematodes as well as the influence of fecundity on proportion of species in the strongylid community. Twenty-five specimens from each of 15 strongylid species (Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus edentatus, Triodontophorus serratus, Triodontophorus brevicauda, Triodontophorus tenuicollis, Cyathostomum catinatum, Coronocyclus coronatus, Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cylicocyclus insigne, Cylicocyclus leptostomus, Cylicostephanus calicatus, Cylicostephanus goldi, Cylicostephanus longibursatus, Cylicostephanus minutus, and Poteriostomum imparidentatum) collected after necropsy were studied. The reproductive system was extracted from the female body; all eggs were removed, counted, and measured under a light microscope. Significant differences in number of eggs in female uteri of various strongylid species were observed (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.001); the least numbers of eggs were registered in C. longibursatus (average = 49) and C. leptostomus (63) and the largest number in S. edentatus (5,918). Significant correlation between nematode body size and number of eggs was observed (p < 0.001). Correlation between size of eggs and body size was insignificant (Spearman R = 0.11, p = 0.70). Negative correlation was observed between number of eggs in female uteri and proportion of these species in strongylid community (Spearman R = -0.78, p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression of species proportion in the community on three predictors (number of eggs, body size, and egg size) was not significant (p > 0.05). However, the question on influence of fecundity on proportion of species in strongylid community needs further studies.

We study fluctuating tilt Brownian ratchets based on fractional subdiffusion in sticky viscoelastic media characterized by a power law memory kernel. Unlike the normal diffusion case, the rectification effect vanishes in the adiabatically slow modulation limit and optimizes in a driving frequency range. It is shown also that the anomalous rectification effect is maximal (stochastic resonance effect) at optimal temperature and can be of surprisingly good quality. Moreover, subdiffusive current can flow in the counterintuitive direction upon a change of temperature or driving frequency. The dependence of anomalous transport on load exhibits a remarkably simple universality.

Ceramides are a novel class of biologically active molecules involved in the regulation of different signaling pathways. Ceramide is involved in regulation of the phospholipase D (PLD) activity and development of cell resistance to insulin. In this work, we have studied age-related features of insulin regulation of PLD activity and glucose metabolism in intact cells and modeled their resistance to insulin by exogenous ceramide and palmitic acid. Contents of ceramides and of free fatty acids (FFA) are found to increase with age, as well as on incubation of liver cells of young rats in the presence of the ceramide precursor palmitic acid. Under these conditions, the ability of insulin to activate PLD, the cell uptake of glucose, and glycogen synthesis sharply decreased. On incubation of hepatocytes of young animals in the presence of exogenous C2-ceramide, the contents of endogenous ceramides increased but not the contents of FFAs and of neutral lipids. These events were accompanied by suppression of the insulin-induced production of phosphatidylethanol (a result of ethanol transphosphatidylation by PLD), glucose uptake, and glycogen synthesis. Incubation of insulin-resistant liver cells of young rats and also of hepatocytes of old rats in the presence of myriocin (an inhibitor of the de novo synthesis of ceramide) was associated with a decrease in ceramide content in the cells and an increase in the cell sensitivity to insulin. The findings indicate an important role of ceramide in disturbance of insulin signaling due to inhibition of the PLD-dependent link in the liver cells of old animals.

In this paper, we report our investigation of the translational energy relaxation of fast S((1)D) atoms in a Xe thermal bath. The interaction potential of Xe-S was constructed using ab initio methods. Total and differential cross sections were then calculated. The latter have been incorporated into the construction of the kernel of the Boltzmann equation describing the energy relaxation process. The solution of the Boltzmann equation was obtained and results were compared with those reported in experiments [G. Nan, and P. L. Houston, J. Chem. Phys. 97, 7865 (1992)]. Good agreement with the measured time-dependent relative velocity of fast S((1)D) atoms was obtained except at long relaxation times. The discrepancy may be due to the error accumulation caused by the use of hard sphere approximation and the Monte Carlo analysis of the experimental data. Our accurate description of the energy relaxation process led to an increase in the number of collisions required to achieve equilibrium by an order of magnitude compared to the number given by the hard-sphere approximation.

The authors summarize the results of investigations of specific anatomical features of paranasal sinuses in more than 12,000 subjects. The patients with suspected cerebral pathology and lesions in the paranasal sinuses were examined using computed tomography. Structural variants of ethmoid bone and ethmoidal labyrinth, nasal septum, maxillary, frontal, and sphenoidal sinuses are described. The morphometric analysis revealed the zonal relationship between different structures of nasal mucosa and the new variants of regulatory structures in the cavernous sinus vessels.

The paper deals with the importance of treatment of primary cancer of the trachea and, in particular, the experience of the Center in using radical therapy for inoperable squamous cell tumors and adenoid cystic carcinoma. An original system of tumor staging developed at the Center draws on international classifications (TNIVI) and methods of radiotherapy depending on tumor localization. It is shown that tracheal malignancies, especially adenoid cystic carcinomas, are characterized by relatively high radiosensitivity.
