The essential oil of Aniba canelilla (Kunth) Mez (EOAC), an Amazon plant composed of a rare nitro compound, has shown scientific evidence of antifungal activity but is still unexplored against dermatophytes. The antifungal susceptibility of EOAC and its main compound, 1-nitro-2-phenylethane (NP), was evaluated against dermatophytes ( Trichophyton rubrum , T. mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis ), evidencing antifungal activity with an inhibitory concentration lower than 256 μg/mL. The mechanism of action was also evaluated, and it is suggested that EOAC and NP have fungicidal action in the fungal membrane, since the antifungal activity occurs through a modification of the shape of the conidial structures of the fungus, showing the permeability of the intracellular content due to the visually observed plasmolysis and cytosolic extravasation through an osmotic process. These results suggest the essential oil and its main compound are promising plant-derived alternatives for treating ungual dermatophytosis.

Objective: Studies show that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) do not engage in regular exercise as often as individuals without T2DM. In addition to numerous barriers to engaging in regular exercise, a different rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during physical activity has been hypothesized to play a role. Therefore, this study investigates whether T2DM affects RPE., Methods: RPE values (BORG scale ratings) and heart rate (HR) data were analyzed during an endurance step test (25 W + 25 W every 2 min) at different workloads relative to the individual maximum load (50%, 70% and 90% of peak workload (W peak )) in patients with T2DM and in non-diabetic control (CON) subjects (n = 12 in each group). Furthermore, in a larger group of overweight patients with T2DM (n = 81), it was investigated whether glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels correlate with RPE values at the different relative loads., Results: Neither RPE nor HR values significantly differed between T2DM and CON subjects at 50%, 70% or 90% of W peak . No significant correlations were identified between HbA1c levels and RPE values., Conclusion: There is no evidence in our study that T2DM leads to a different perception of physical exertion. The essential oil extracted from the leaves of Piper aduncum has antifungal, insecticidal and antibacterial activity. Studies with its main compound, dillapiole (DIL) revealed antibacterial and anti-inflammatory potential. Despite all this bioactivity, there is no updated report on the development and validation of analytical and bioanalytical methodology to quantify DIL in skin samples. A selective, precise, accurate and adequate method for the determination of DIL in solutions, porcine ear skin samples and receptor fluid was developed and validated by headspace extraction-gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (HS-GC-FID). HS-GC-FID was applied to determine DIL in Franz cell permeation and retention studies using porcine ear skin samples. In the HS-GC-FID method, matrix-related interferences were not observed at the peak of the DIL retention time. The results showed a high recovery (>97%) after the extraction procedure, allowing the quantification of DIL in complex matrices. In vitro permeation/retention for DIL showed cumulative amounts permeated in the order: receptor fluid (21.98 ± 1.19 μg/cm 2 ) > epidermis (15.40 ± 1.20 μg/cm 2 ) > dermis (9.52 ± 1.13 μg/cm 2 ). This study investigates the feasibility of an accompanied 5-day hiking tour (Way of St. James) for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and its impact on their quality of life/well-being, diabetes distress and glucose profile. Twenty-three T2DM patients (with and without insulin therapy) participated in the study. The 120 km pilgrimage (from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela, Spain) was accompanied by three physicians, two diabetes counselors and one sports scientist. Quality of life/well-being was assessed by the World Health Organization’s (WHO)-5 questionnaire, and diabetes distress was evaluated based on the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) scale. The glucose levels of six insulin-treated patients were measured using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, considering that insulin-treated patients can be at increased risk of exercise-induced hypoglycemia. A significant improvement in quality of life/well-being was reported (p < 0.001), while diabetes distress did not change significantly (p = 0.203). Only two of the six insulin-treated patients showed moderate hypoglycemic episodes between 0.97% and 5.21% time below range per day, with glucose levels between 53−70 mg/dL. Hiking tours such as the one organized for this study can improve quality of life/well-being without increasing diabetes distress and are considered relatively safe for T2DM patients, even for those being treated with insulin.

The essential oil extracted from the leaves of Piper aduncum, an aromatic plant from the Amazon region, is rich in dillapiole and presents anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, nanoemulsions (NE) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), which are biocompatible nanostructured systems of a lipid nature, were prepared by high-pressure homogenization for the yet unexplored skin delivery of dillapiole. The addition of hydroxyethylcellulose produced hydrogel-thickened NE or NLC in view to improving the viscosity and skin adherence of the nanoformulations. Formulations were characterized with respect to dillapiole content, droplet size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, morphology, rheological behavior, bioadhesion, skin permeation profile, and in vitro irritancy (HET-CAM). The formulations developed presented spherical, homogeneous nanometric particle size (around 130 nm), narrow polydispersity index (<0.3), and negative zeta potential (around −40 mV). Dillapiole content was slightly lower in NLC compared to NE since the production process involves heating. The hydrogels containing nanocarriers showed pseudoplastic behavior with bioadhesive characteristics. The developed formulations exhibited a controlled release profile, dillapiole delivery up to the dermis, the layer of interest for anti-inflammatory potential, and low irritant potential in the chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM). Both hydrogels-thickened NE and NLC seemed to be promising formulations for skin delivery of Piper aduncum essential oil.

Sesquiterpene compounds are applied as permeation promoters in topical formulations. However, studies exploring their impact on nanostructured systems, changes in permeation profile, and consequently, its biological activity are restricted. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the skin permeation of the major sesquiterpenes, beta-caryophyllene, and caryophyllene oxide from the oleoresin of Copaifera multijuga , after delivery into topical nanoemulgels, and the in vivo antiedematogenic activity. First, ten nanoemulgels were prepared and characterized, and their in vitro permeation profile and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity were evaluated. In equivalent concentrations, β-caryophyllene permeation was greater from oleoresin nanoemulgels, resulting in greater in vivo antiedematogenic activity. However, an inverse relationship was observed for caryophyllene oxide, which showed its favored permeation and better in vivo anti-inflammatory effect carried as an isolated compound in the nanoemulgels. These results suggest that the presence of similar compounds may interfere with the permeation profile when comparing the profiles of the compounds alone or when presented in oleoresin. Furthermore, the correlation results between the permeation profile and in vivo antiedematogenic activity corroborate the establishment of beta-caryophyllene as an essential compound for this pharmacological activity of C. multijuga oleoresin.

Irisin is a promising therapeutic target in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as studies have demonstrated that irisin can induce "browning" of adipocytes and mitigate pro-inflammatory conditions. Sex-specific changes in irisin levels have been reported in a study involving healthy men and women following physical training. The present study aims to analyze the effects of an 8-week training intervention on circulating irisin levels in patients with T2DM and to find out whether the training responses differ between T2DM men and women. Twenty-nine overweight/obese T2DM patients (19 men, 10 women; age: 46-74 years; body mass index >25 kg/m 2 ) participated in a combined moderate-intensity endurance/strength training program (3 times a week). The irisin levels of men and women did not differ significantly. The post-training irisin levels did not differ significantly from the pre-training values, and there was no interaction effect of sex. This study shows no training-induced (sex-specific) changes in circulating irisin levels in T2DM patients. 3-O-Methylquercetin (3OMQ), a natural 3-O-methylflavonoid, was isolated from Achyrocline satureioides and purified using the high-performance counter current chromatography (HPCCC) on a semi-preparative scale. High-purity 3OMQ (98%) was obtained with excellent recovery (81.8% (w/w)) and good yield (190 mg/100 g of plant). Isolated 3OMQ was evaluated against the A375 human amelanotic melanoma cancer cell line and A375-derived with different degrees of aggressiveness (A375-A7, A375-G10, and A375-PCDNA3). The results showed that 3OMQ reduced the cell viability of all strains, demonstrating time- and dose-dependent responses. 3OMQ was used to obtain hydrogels for the topical treatment of melanoma. Thus, 3OMQ was incorporated into hypromellose hydrogels with/without different cyclodextrins (CDs). The 3OMQ formulations showed permeation/retention in all skin layers, namely stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis. A significant amount of 3OMQ was found in the replication site of the melanoma cells (epidermis and dermis). Altogether, these results demonstrate that 3OMQ can be isolated from Achyrocline satureioides by HPCCC on a semi-preparative scale and exhibit cytotoxic activity against melanoma cells. Achyrocline satureioides (Lam.) DC Asteraceae extracts (ASEs) have been investigated for the treatment of various skin disorders. This study reports the effects of ASE-loaded nanoemulsions (NE ASE ) on the cellular viability, death by necrosis, and migration of immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT cell line), as well as the irritant potential through the hen's egg chorioallantoic membrane test (HET-CAM). NE ASE exhibited a polydispersity index above 0.12, with a droplet size of 300 nm, ζ-potential of -40 mV, and content of flavonoids close to 1 mg/mL. No cytotoxicity of the ASE was observed on HaCaT by MTT assay (up to 10 µg/mL). A significant increase of HaCaT viability was observed to NE ASE (up to 5 μg/mL of flavonoids), compared to treatment with the ASE. The necrosis death evaluation demonstrated that only NE ASE did not lead to cell death at all the tested concentrations. The scratch assay demonstrated that NE ASE was able to increase the cell migration at low flavonoid concentrations. Finally, the HET-CAM test proved the non-irritative potential of NE ASE . Overall, the results indicate the potential of the proposed formulations for topical use in wound healing, in view of their promising effects on proliferation and migration in keratinocytes, combined with an indication of the absence of cytotoxicity and non-irritating potential.

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with a number of comorbidities such as coronary artery disease and heart failure. While physical activity is already implemented in current international guidelines for the prevention and treatment of AF, the precise role of different types of exercise in the management of AF remains to be elucidated. The primary aim of the Cologne ExAfib Trial is to assess the feasibility and safety of different exercise modes in patients diagnosed with paroxysmal AF. Secondary outcomes include assessments of physical function, AF burden, quality of life and inflammation, as well as morphological and cardiac adaptations., Methods and Analysis: The study opened for recruitment in September 2019. In the initial pilot phase of this four-armed randomised controlled trial, we aim to enrol 60 patients between 60 years and 80 years of age with paroxysmal AF. After screening and pretesting, patients are randomised into one of the following groups: high-intensity interval training (4×4 min at 75%-85% peak power output (PPO)), moderate-intensity continuous training (25 min at 55%-65% PPO), strength training (whole body, 3 sets of 6-12 repetitions at 70%-90% one repetition maximum [1RM]) or a usual-care control group. Training is performed two times per week for 12 weeks. If the feasibility and safety can be confirmed through the initial pilot phase, the recruitment will be continued and powered for a clinical endpoint.Feasibility and safety are assessed by measures of recruitment and completion, programme tolerance and adherence as well as reported adverse events, including hospitalisation rates. This is the first study to examine whether training before breakfast in the overnight-fasted state is more effective in improving the health of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than after breakfast in the fed state. Thirty T2DM patients (60 ± 8 years, 33.7 ± 4.6 kg/m 2 ) were randomly assigned to the F group (training in the overnight-fasted state (n = 15)) and to the C group (training in the fed state (control group, n = 15)). All patients completed an 8-week combined endurance/strength training program. Physical training significantly increased time to physical exhaustion during an endurance test (+10.4%), power output during strength tests (chest presses: +36.7% and seated rows: +37.8%), and fat-free mass (+1.7 kg). Body fat mass (-1.9 kg), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values (absolute change: -0.3%), serum insulin values (-2.5 microU/mL), the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index (-1.1), and circulating triglyceride levels (-31 mg/dL) decreased significantly from pre- to post-training. The training had no effect on body mass index, serum fasting glucose, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratio or interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α levels. Analyses of variance revealed no time × group interaction for any variable (P > .05). The training was effective in improving the health of T2DM patients. However, the preliminary study's data do not provide any evidence that the nutritional state (overnight-fasted or fed) in regular physical training plays a significant role for training-induced adaptations in T2DM patients. The human nail is a unique barrier with a keratinized constitution that favors protection and fine touch. However, many disorders can affect the nail, among them, are the onychomycosis and psoriasis. Systemic oral therapy has been applied to treat these diseases, even presenting disadvantages, including side effects, drug interactions, contraindications, toxicity, high cost and low patient compliance. A great option to succeed in dealing with the problems associated with oral therapy is the topical administration of drugs. However, nail composition, low diffusion through ungual route and reduced tissue bioavailability for topical treatments are limiting factors. These drawbacks can be overcome by promoting penetration through the nails by employing penetration enhancers. The review focuses on patents that highlight permeation enhancers applied to nail drug delivery for the treatment of onychomycosis and psoriasis. Literature and patent searches were conduced regarding the topic of interest. The substantial literature and patent search revealed that permeation enhancers, especially chemicals, are great strategies for promoting the ungual delivery of drugs. Aniba canelilla (H.B.K.) Mez is an aromatic plant from the Amazon region whose essential oil has 1-nitro-2-phenylethane (NP) and methyleugenol (ME) as major compounds. Despite of the scientifically proven antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities for these compounds, there is no report up to date about the topical permeation or quantification of NP and ME on skin samples. The aim of this study was the validation of an optimized bioanalytical method by solid-phase microextraction in headspace mode in gas chromatograph with flame ionization detector (HS-SPME-GC-FID) for the determination of NP and ME from the oil in different samples from permeation study, such as porcine ear skin (PES) layers (stratum corneum, epidermis and dermis) and receptor fluid (RF). For this propose polydimethylsiloxane fibers (100 μm) were used and HS-SPME extraction condition consisted of 53 °C, 21 min, and 5% w.v -1 NaCl addition. The wide range of the calibration curve (2.08-207.87 μg mL -1 for NP and 0.40-40.41 μg mL -1 for ME), the presence of matrix interferences and the intrinsic characteristics of HS-SPME required a data linearization using Log 10 . Thereby, data and the gained results presented homoscedasticity, normalization of residues and adequate linearity (r 2  > 0.99) and accuracy for both compounds. In order to verify the applicability of the validated method, the HS-SPME-GC-FID procedure was performed to determine the amount of NP and ME permeated and retained in samples after Franz diffusion cell study from different dosages (20, 100 and 200 μL) of A. canelilla oil. Compounds permeation showed a progressive increase and penetration dependence based on the dosage applied. Furthermore, retention was in order receptor fluid >> dermis >> epidermis >> stratum corneum for both compounds, suggesting NP and ME could penetrate deep tissue, probably due to the partition coefficient, mass, size, and solubility of these compounds. In conclusion, the proposed method by HS-SPME-GC-FID to quantify 1-nitro-2-phenylethane and methyleugenol from Aniba canelilla essential oil was able to determine selectively, precisely and accurately these main compounds in skin permeation samples., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Copaiba oil is used as a popular medicine in the Amazonian forest region, especially due to its anti-inflammatory properties. In this paper, we describe the formulation of hydrogel containing copaiba oil nanoemulsions (with positive and negative charges), its skin permeation, and its anti-inflammatory activity in two in vivo models: mouse ear edema and rat paw edema. Three hydrogels were tested (Carbopol ® , hydroxyethylcellulose and chitosan), but only Carbopol ® and hydroxyethylcellulose hydrogels presented good stability and did not interfere with the nanoemulsions droplet size and polydispersity index. In skin permeation assay, both formulations, positively charged nanoemulsion (PCN) and negatively charged nanoemulsion (NCN), presented a high retention in epidermis (9.76 ± 2.65 μg/g and 7.91 ± 2.46 μg/cm 2 , respectively) followed by a smaller retention in the dermis (2.43 ± 0.91 and 1.95 ± 0.56 μg/cm 2 , respectively). They also presented permeation to the receptor fluid (0.67 ± 0.22 and 1.80 ± 0.85 μg/cm 2 , respectively). In addition, anti-inflammatory effect was observed to NCN and PCN with edema inhibitions of 69 and 67% in mouse ear edema and 32 and 72% in rat paw edema, respectively. Histological cuts showed the decrease of inflammatory factors, such as dermis and epidermis hyperplasia and inflammatory cells infiltration, confirming the anti-inflammatory effect from both copaiba oil nanoemulsions incorporated in hydrogel.

We investigated the cellular distribution of lactate transporter (MCT1) and its chaperone CD147 (using immunohistochemistry and fluorescence-activated cell sorting) in the erythrocytes of men with non-insulin-dependent type-2 diabetes (NIDDM, n = 11, 61 ± 8 years of age) under acute exercise (ergometer cycling test, World Health Organisation scheme) performed before and after a 3-month strength training program. Cytosolic MCT1 distribution and membraneous CD147 density did not change after acute exercise (ergometer). After the 3-month strength training, MCT1-density was increased and the reaction of MCT1 (but not that of CD147) towards acute exercise (ergometer) was altered. MCT1 localisation was shifted from the centre to the cellular membrane. This resulted in a decrease in the immunohistochemically measured cytosolic MCT1-density. We conclude that strength training alters the acute exercise reaction of MCT1 but not that of CD147 in erythrocytes in patients with NIDDM. This reaction may contribute to long-term normalisation and stabilisation of the regulation of lactate plasma concentration in NIDDM.

It has been demonstrated that alterations of adipocytokines can alter immune status in type 2 diabetes. The present study investigated changes of adipocytokine plasma concentrations and cellular immune status in overweight men, suffering from non-insulin dependent type 2 diabetes (n=14, age 61.0±8.7 years, BMI 31.1±3.5 kg/cm2). Subjects underwent a 3 months endurance exercise intervention (twice per week for up to 45 min) cycling at a heart rate corresponding to a 2 mmol/l lactate threshold. Before and after the intervention testing for adipocytokines (leptin, adiponectin, resistin) and cellular immune status (including T memory-cells and regulative T-cells) was performed by RIA and FACS accordingly.The exercise intervention improved anthropometric and metabolic parameters of all subjects. We observed a significant decline for resistin and for the CD19+ B-cells. The CD4+CD25+CD127low Treg-cells decreased, however not statistically significant. All other parameters remained unchanged.In conclusion, even though only training twice a week, the exercise affected parts of the cellular immune system as well as resistin levels in men suffering from non-insulin dependent type 2 diabetes., (© J. This study investigates whether regular physical activity (moderate endurance or resistance training twice a week for 3 months) influences the key regulatory molecules of mitochondrial biogenesis (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC1α), nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF1), and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM)) in patients suffering from non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (n = 16, years = 62 ± 7, body mass index (BMI) = 30 ± 4 kg/m(2)). Seven T2DM men took part in endurance training, and 9 men participated in resistance training. BMI-matched non-diabetic male control subjects (CON) (n = 7, years = 53 ± 6, BMI = 30 ± 4 kg/m(2)) were studied for comparison. The protein contents of PGC1α, NRF1, and TFAM were determined using immunohistochemical staining methods on biopsies taken from the musculus vastus lateralis. At baseline, no differences were observed in NRF1-density between the T2DM men and the CON, while the contents of PGC1α and TFAM were decreased in the T2DM men. PGC1α and TFAM contents were not changed in the T2DM patients after the training period, but NRF1 was decreased. The down-regulation of mitochondrial signaling molecules might explain the patho-physiological reduction in mitochondrial biogenesis found in T2DM. Physical training, as performed in our study, did not reverse the down-regulation of mitochondrial signaling molecules--at least not after 3 months. [corrected].

The present study analyzes the oxidative stress situation in the skeletal muscle of overweight/obese men suffering from non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes mellitus [T2DM, n=16, years=61±7, body mass index (BMI)=31±4 kg/m(2) ] and BMI-matched non-diabetic male control subjects (CON, n=7, years=53±6, BMI=30±4 kg/m(2) ). Furthermore, it investigates whether physical training can alter the skeletal muscle antioxidative capacity of T2DM patients at rest. Molecule content analyses (immunohistochemical stainings) of 8-iso-prostaglandin-F2α (8-Iso-PGF), superoxide dismutase-2 (SOD2), glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPX1), peroxiredoxin isoforms (PRDX 1-6) and heat-shock-protein-70 (HSP70) were performed in biopsies taken from the vastus lateralis muscle. Under basal conditions, 8-Iso-PGF was significantly decreased in T2DM patients (-35.7%), whereas PRDX2 and PRDX6 were significantly increased relative to CON (+82.6%; +82.3%). Differences were neither observed in SOD2 nor in GPX1 or PRDX1, 3, 4, 5 density. Regular physical activity (moderate endurance or resistance training twice a week for 3 months) did not alter PRDX1, 2, 3, 4, 6 in the skeletal muscle of T2DM patients, but significantly increased SOD2 (+65.9%), GPX1 (+62.4%), PRDX5 (+37.5%), and HSP70 (+48.5%). Overweight/obese men with non-insulin-dependent T2DM exhibit up-regulated cytosolic peroxiredoxin contents relative to BMI-matched controls. Regular training further up-regulates cytosolic and mitochondrial antioxidative enzymes in T2DM patients and improves their cellular protection systems. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with an increased release of free radicals which play an important role in the manifestation of diabetes and in the progression of diabetic complications. Peroxiredoxins are thought to be essential components of the erythrocyte antioxidative defense. Therefore, we compared peroxiredoxin isoform contents (PRDX1-6 immuno-histochemial stainings) in the erythrocytes of overweight/obese T2DM men (n = 6) and of BMI-matched non-diabetic male control subjects (n = 6). Only erythrocyte PRDX1 and PRDX2 proteins were detectable using immunohistochemical methods. PRDX1 was significantly increased in T2DM men relative to control subjects (+95.9%, P ≤ 0.05). Furthermore, we studied the influence of a 3-month endurance training program (3 times a week, cycling at 75% maximal heart rate) on erythrocyte PRDX1 and PRDX2 contents in overweight/obese T2DM men (n = 11). Training significantly increased PRDX2 at rest (+96%, P ≤ 0.05). The up-regulation of the peroxiredoxin system may help counteract free radicals in the erythrocytes of T2DM patients.

People who are afflicted with "metabolic syndrome" exhibit multiple coronary disease risk factors such as insulin resistance, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or obesity. Twenty-six volunteers (13 women and 13 men) with such disease risk factors (56 ± 5 years) participated in a 14-week resistance training program. Given the fact that resistance training may improve cardiometabolic parameters, the fasting total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, insulin, glucose value, homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) index, and blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) were measured before and after the training intervention. In addition, muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis muscle of 11 of the men and 5 of the women were analyzed to determine whether changes in the muscle morphology influence the cardiometabolic parameters. Resistance training resulted in a significant increase in fasting HDL for the entire group (from 44.35 ± 9.43 to 48.57 ± 10.96 mg·dl(-1), p = 0.016). No other blood parameter changed significantly. No change was observed in the HOMA index, blood pressure, or BMI. The muscle fiber type distribution did not change, but a significant hypertrophy of muscle fibers was evident (an increase of the ellipse minor axis of 67.3 ± 16.6 to 72.1 ± 12.3 μm, p = 0.004). Moderate intensity resistance training, as was performed in our study, induces hypertrophic impulses but does not seem to have a clear positive influence on cardiometabolic risk factors. However, 2 sessions of moderate intensity resistance training per week can enhance the fasting HDL cholesterol in middle-aged subjects.

Hydrogen as a high-quality and clean energy carrier has attracted renewed and ever-increasing attention around the world in recent years, mainly due to developments in fuel cells and environmental pressures including climate change issues. In thermochemical processes for hydrogen production from fossil fuels, separation and purification is a critical technology. Where water-gas shift reaction is involved for converting the carbon monoxide to hydrogen, membrane reactors show great promises for shifting the equilibrium. Membranes are also important to the subsequent purification of hydrogen. For hydrogen production and purification, there are generally two classes of membranes both being inorganic: dense phase metal and metal alloys, and porous ceramic membranes. Porous ceramic membranes are normally prepared by sol-gel or hydrothermal methods, and have high stability and durability in high temperature, harsh impurity and hydrothermal environments. In particular, microporous membranes show promises in water gas shift reaction at higher temperatures. In this article, we review the recent advances in both dense phase metal and porous ceramic membranes, and compare their separation properties and performance in membrane reactor systems. The preparation, characterization and permeation of the various membranes will be presented and discussed. We also aim to examine the critical issues in these membranes with respect to the technical and economical advantages and disadvantages. Discussions will also be made on the relevance and importance of membrane technology to the new generation of zero-emission power technologies.

Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) is a rare neurologic disorder comprising the main symptoms of eye-movement disturbances, muscle jerks, and severe ataxia. In children and adults, some cases are associated with a tumor as a paraneoplastic syndrome, whereas in children the paraneoplastic form is almost exclusively associated with neuroblastoma. The detection of autoantibodies in some OMS sera led to the hypothesis that the syndrome is of autoimmune origin. Beside autoantibodies against intracellular proteins, such as anti-Hu, alpha-enolase, and KHSRP, specific binding of autoantibodies to the surface of neuroblastoma cells and cerebellar granular neurons have been found. Antiproliferative and proapoptotic effects of these autoantibodies on neuroblastoma cell lines were noted as well. These results support the concept of a humoral autoimmune process in the pathogenesis of OMS.

Background/aims: Administration of hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) initially after liver transplantation of hepatitis B patients is considered important to prevent reinfection reliably. However, dosing schedules differ considerably between centers. We measured HBsAg, anti-HBs and HBV DNA kinetics to create a rational basis for dosing schemes., Methods: Thirteen patients (group A) received 10,000 IU HBIG in the anhepatic phase followed by 10,000 IU daily until HBsAg became negative, whereas five patients (group B) received 20,000 IU followed by 5000 IU every 30 min., Results: HBsAg levels at time of transplantation ranged from 0.12 to 12,990 IU/ml. Correlations between initial HBsAg and HBIG required to decrease HBsAg below 1 IU/ml were high in groups A and B (r=0.97, p<0.001; r=1.00, p<0.001), as were correlations between initial HBsAg and HBIG required to raise anti-HBs above 1000 IU/l (r=0.94, p<0.001; r=1.00, p<0.001). In 11 HBV DNA-positive patients, DNA levels became negative in seven, and dropped by 2.5 log10 (mean) in the other four patients during immunoglobulin administration., Conclusions: In conclusion, required HBIG doses to decrease HBsAg and raise anti-HBs are determined by HBsAg levels at time of transplantation, not by HBV DNA levels. Shortened HBIG dosing intervals accelerate HBsAg decrease and anti-HBs increase. HBV DNA decreases rapidly during HBIG administration in most patients.
