Under DAPHNE4NFDI, the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reference database, RefXAS, has been set up. For this purpose, we developed a method to enable users to submit a raw dataset, with its associated metadata, via a dedicated website for inclusion in the database. Implementation of the database includes an upload of metadata to the scientific catalogue and an upload of files via object storage, with automated query capabilities through a web server and visualization of the data and files. Based on the mode of measurements, quality criteria have been formulated for the automated check of any uploaded data. In the present work, the significant metadata fields for reusability, as well as reproducibility of results (FAIR data principles), are discussed. Quality criteria for the data uploaded to the database have been formulated and assessed. Moreover, the usability and interoperability of available XAS data/file formats have been explored. The first version of the RefXAS database prototype is presented, which features a human verification procedure, currently being tested with a new user interface designed specifically for curators; a user-friendly landing page; a full list of datasets; advanced search capabilities; a streamlined upload process; and, finally, a server-side automatic authentication and (meta-) data storage via MongoDB, PostgreSQL and (data-) files via relevant APIs., (open access.)

Microenvironmental modifications on metal sites are crucial to tune oxygen reduction catalytic behavior and decrypt intrinsic mechanism, whereas the stochastic properties of traditional pyrolyzed single-atom catalysts induce vague recognition on structure-reactivity relations. Herein, we report a theoretical descriptor relying on binding energies of oxygen adsorbates and directly associating the derived Sabatier volcano plot with calculated overpotential to forecast catalytic efficiency of cobalt porphyrin. This Sabatier volcano plot instructs that electron-withdrawing substituents mitigate the over-strong *OH intermediate adsorption by virtue of the decreased proportion of electrons in bonding orbital. To experimentally validate this speculation, we implement a secondary sphere microenvironment customization strategy on cobalt porphyrin-based polymer nanocomposite analogs. Systematic X-ray spectroscopic and in situ electrochemical characterizations capture the pronounced accessible active site density and the fast interfacial/outward charge migration kinetics contributions for the optimal carboxyl group-substituted catalyst. Laser polishing of material surfaces is a complex process depending on many variable parameters, such as, e.g., the properties of the used laser and optics (wavelength, pulse duration, fluence, and profile), as well as the processing (spot size, feed rate, and line or point overlap), and the thermodynamical properties of the material to be polished (heat capacity, heat conduction, etc.). For the successful laser polishing of any material, a systematic variation of all the process parameters is required to obtain satisfactorily polished surfaces with an appropriate set of parameters for the material of interest. In order to allow systematic studies of laser polishing processes, a new setup employing a highly stable nanosecond laser with an adjustable wavelength has been realized. The sample is located in a small high-vacuum chamber with the capability of introducing additional gases in a controlled manner, and the entire chamber is scanned in the beam to allow laser polishing of selected spots, lines, or larger areas. The setup is fully remote-controlled and allows in situ inspection of the initiated processes by means of a long-range microscope, electrical measurements, reflected laser light from the sample surface, and an analysis of the vacuum within the process chamber. The main properties of the setup will be presented, and some exemplary results on niobium and molybdenum metal samples will be discussed., (© 2024 Author(s). Maneb is a manganese(II)-containing fungicide with a multi-site effect and no resistance, therefore it is widely applied in many parts of the world. There is, however, mounting evidence for neurotoxic effects with Parkinson-like symptoms (manganism) related to usage of Maneb. Due to its insolubility in most solvents and its paramagnetism, structural elucidation is not trivial, and thus its exact molecular structure remains unknown. We report herein a synthesis procedure to prepare Maneb reproducibly in pure form and the use of various analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron diffraction to determine the molecular structure of Maneb in the solid state and also in solution., (© 2023 The Authors. Iron phthalocyanine-based polymers (PFePc) are attractive noble-metal-free candidates for catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the low site-exposure degree and poor electrical conductivity of bulk PFePc restricted their practical applications. Herein, laminar PFePc nanosheets covalently and longitudinally linked to graphene (3D-G-PFePc) was prepared. Such structural engineering qualifies 3D-G-PFePc with high site utilization and rapid mass transfer. Thence, 3D-G-PFePc demonstrates efficient ORR performance with a high specific activity of 69.31 μA cm -2 , a high mass activity of 81.88 A g -1 , and a high turnover frequency of 0.93 e s -1  site -1 at 0.90 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode in O 2 -saturated 0.1 M KOH, outperforming the lamellar PFePc wrapped graphene counterpart. Systematic electrochemical analyses integrating variable-frequency square wave voltammetry and in situ scanning electrochemical microscopy further underline the rapid kinetics of 3D-G-PFePc towards ORR., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The formation of ZnO nanomaterials from different Zn acetylacetonate precursor solutions was studied in situ by employing simultaneous, time-resolved X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) at the Zn K-edge. The precursor solutions were heated from room temperature to the desired reaction temperatures in a hermetically sealed cell dedicated to X-ray experiments. In general, the first indications for the formation of hexagonal ZnO were found for elevated temperatures of about 80 °C both by XRD and EXAFS, and the contributions increase with temperature and time. However, no reaction intermediates could be proved in addition to the Zn precursors and the formed hexagonal ZnO materials. Furthermore, the results show that the efficiency of the reaction, i.e., the conversion of the precursor material to the ZnO product, strongly depends on the solvent used and the reaction temperature. ZnO formation is accelerated by an increased temperature of 165 °C and the use of 1-octanol, with a conversion to ZnO of more than 80% after only a ca. 35 min reaction time according to a detailed analysis of the EXAFS data. For comparison, an identical concentration of Zn acetylacetonate in water or dilute alkaline NaOH solutions and a reaction temperature of around 90 °C leads to a smaller conversion of approximately 50% only, even after several hours of reaction. The particle size determined from XRD for different orientations shows a preferred orientation along the c-direction of the hexagonal crystal system, as well in accordance with scanning electron microscopy. The LaMer model explained this highly non-uniform growth of needle-like ZnO crystallites.

The hydrothermal synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) particles from zinc acetylacetonate monohydrate in "pure" aqueous solution and in aqueous NaOH solution at 90 °C is reported. The structural and morphological properties of ZnO particles were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The effect of NaOH on the growth mechanism and photocatalytic performance of hierarchical ZnO structures was investigated. The experimental findings, supported by results of quantum chemical calculations at the level of density functional theory, were used to propose the mechanism of nucleation and preferential growth of finely tuned hollow and nonhollow ZnO structures and their effects on the photocatalytic activity. The calculations indicate that the process of ZnO nucleation in "pure" aqueous solution mainly proceeds by the reaction of small monomers, while tetramers play a crucial role in aqueous NaOH solution. Both the preferred ZnO nanostructure and microstructure growth processes are driven by O-H···O hydrogen bonds as controlling elements. The calculated values of the E O···H interaction indicate a stronger interaction via O-H···O hydrogen bonds in "pure" aqueous media ( E O···H = -11.73 kcal mol -1 ) compared to those obtained in aqueous NaOH solution ( E O···H = -8.41 kcal mol -1 ). The specific structural motif of the (ZnO-H 2 O) 12 dodecamers with calculated negative Δ G * INT free release energy indicates that the formation of anisotropic nanocrystalline ZnO with the c -axis as the primary growth direction is spontaneous and accelerated exclusively in "pure" aqueous solution, whereas it is an unfavorable endergonic process in aqueous NaOH solution (Δ G * INT > 0). Efforts have been made to determine the photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO samples based on the XAS measurements. ZnO particles obtained in "pure" aqueous solution show the highest photocatalytic activity due to the presence of a larger amount of oxygen vacancies.

Pure and Co 3+ -doped BaAl 2 O 4 [Ba(Al 1- x Co x ) 2 O 4 , x = 0, 0.0077, 0.0379] powder samples were prepared by a facile hydrothermal route. Elemental analyses by static secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements at the Co K-edge, and X-ray diffraction studies were fully correlated, thus addressing a complete description of the structural complexity of Co 3+ -doped BaAl 2 O 4 powder. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns indicated that prepared samples were nanocrystalline with a hexagonal P 6 3 symmetry. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements revealed the presence of cobalt in a +3 oxidation state, while the rarely documented, tetrahedral symmetry around Co 3+ was extracted from the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) oscillation patterns. Rietveld structure refinements showed that Co 3+ preferentially substitutes Al 3+ at tetrahedral Al3 sites of the BaAl 2 O 4 host lattice, whereas the (Al3)O 4 tetrahedra remain rather regular with Co 3+ -O distances ranging from 1.73(9) to 1.74(9) Å. The underlying magneto-structural features were unraveled through axial and rhombic zero-field splitting (ZFS) terms. The increased substitution of Al 3+ by Co 3+ at Al3 sites leads to an increase of the axial ZFS terms in Co 3+ -doped BaAl 2 O 4 powder from 10.8 to 26.3 K, whereas the rhombic ZFS parameters across the series change in the range from 2.7 to 10.4 K, showing a considerable increase of anisotropy together with the values of the anisotropic g -tensor components flowing from 1.7 to 2.5. We defined the line between the Co 3+ doping limit and influenced magneto-structural characteristics, thus enabling the design of strategy to control the ZFS terms' contributions to magnetic anisotropy within Co 3+ -doped BaAl 2 O 4 powder.

Niobium metal foils were heat-treated at 900°C under different conditions and in situ investigated with time-resolved X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS and XANES) measurements. The present study aims to mimic the conditions usually applied for heat treatments of Nb materials used for superconducting radiofrequency cavities, in order to better understand the evolving processes during vacuum annealing as well as for heat treatments in controlled dilute gases. Annealing in vacuum in a commercially available cell showed a substantial amount of oxidation, so that a designated new cell was designed and realized, allowing treatments under clean high-vacuum conditions as well as under well controllable gas atmospheres. The experiments performed under vacuum demonstrated that the original structure of the Nb foils is preserved, while a detailed evaluation of the X-ray absorption fine-structure data acquired during treatments in dilute air atmospheres (10 -5  mbar to 10 -3  mbar) revealed a linear oxidation with the time of the treatment, and an oxidation rate proportional to the oxygen (air) pressure. The structure of the oxide appears to be very similar to that of polycrystalline NbO. The cell also permits controlled exposures to other reactive gases at elevated temperatures; here the Nb foils were exposed to dilute nitrogen atmospheres after a pre-conditioning of the studied Nb material for one hour under high-vacuum conditions, in order to imitate typical conditions used for nitrogen doping of cavity materials. Clear structural changes induced by the N 2 exposure were found; however, no evidence for the formation of niobium nitride could be derived from the EXAFS and XANES experiments. The presented results establish the feasibility to study the structural changes of the Nb materials in situ during heat treatments in reactive gases with temporal resolution, which are important to better understand the underlaying mechanisms and the dynamics of phase formation during those heat treatments in more detail., (open access.)

We report on the functional capabilities of our field emission (FE) measurement systems. The samples are prepared and inserted under clean room conditions and can be precisely xyz-positioned, heat-treated, and investigated in different vacuum environments and temperatures. The FE scanning microscope is a unique microscope being used for the localization of FE sites with high lateral resolution by means of extraction voltage U(x, y) or emission current I(x, y) maps over the cathode area of 25 × 25 mm 2 and measuring the FE properties of localized emission sites or individual emitters. In contrast, the integral measurement system with the luminescent screen provides real-time integral information about the distribution of emission sites over the whole cathode during long- and short-term current stability measurements, thus allowing us to investigate the properties of various materials and their applications. Commissioning results with the upgraded systems using a silicon emitter array and a point-type graphene emitter will be given to demonstrate that both FE measurement techniques are very useful for an improved understanding and tailoring of materials for applications. The results showed that point-type graphene emitters are more preferable for practical applications. Using simulation software, a suitable triode configuration for point emitters was designed, and a current transmission ratio of ∼100% was obtained. The FE current stability of graphene emitters at pressures >10 -3 Pa can be improved by heating the cathode at 100 °C-300 °C for 1 min-30 min. Finally, point-type graphene film emitters were used for transmission-type x-ray sources, and their applications in imaging and fluorescence spectroscopy are presented.

Atomically dispersed transition metal active sites have emerged as one of the most important fields of study because they display promising performance in catalysis and have the potential to serve as ideal models for fundamental understanding. However, both the preparation and determination of such active sites remain a challenge. The structural engineering of carbon- and nitrogen-coordinated metal sites (M-N-C, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu, etc.) via employing new heteroatoms, e.g., P and S, remains challenging. In this study, carbon nanosheets embedded with nitrogen and phosphorus dual-coordinated iron active sites (denoted as Fe-N/P-C) were developed and determined using cutting edge techniques. Both experimental and theoretical results suggested that the N and P dual-coordinated iron sites were favorable for oxygen intermediate adsorption/desorption, resulting in accelerated reaction kinetics and promising catalytic oxygen reduction activity. This work not only provides efficient way to prepare well-defined single-atom active sites to boost catalytic performance but also paves the way to identify the dual-coordinated single metal atom sites.

X-ray double-crystal monochromators face a shift of the exit beam when the Bragg angle and thus the transmitted photon energy changes. This can be compensated for by moving one or both crystals accordingly. In the case of monolithic channel-cut crystals, which exhibit utmost stability, the shift of the monochromated beam is inevitable. Here we report performance tests of novel, asymmetrically cut, channel-cut crystals which reduce the beam movements by more than a factor of 20 relative to the symmetric case over the typical energy range of an EXAFS spectrum at the Cu K-edge. In addition, the presented formulas for the beam offset including the asymmetry angle directly indicate the importance of this value, which has been commonly neglected so far in the operation of double-crystal monochromators., (open access.)

Powder samples of pure BaAl 2 O 4 and doped with 4.9 atom % Eu in relation to Ba were prepared by a hydrothermal route. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, 151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ba L 3 - and Eu L 3 -edges, and photoluminescence measurements. Diffraction lines were broadened, indicating that the samples were nanocrystallline. The samples possessed a hexagonal crystal structure, space group P6 3 . 151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed the presence of Eu in the 3+ oxidation state. The same information on the Eu oxidation state was also obtained by the Eu L 3 -edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure of the doped sample. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure showed an Eu 3+ ion substituted for Ba 2+ on the Ba2 site in the BaAl 2 O 4 host structure, with charge compensation by an interstitial O in the vicinity of the Ba2 site. That was confirmed by a Rietveld structure refinement for the Eu-doped BaAl 2 O 4 sample. Analysis of the diffraction line broadening for the prepared samples was performed simultaneously with the structure refinement. Both the dopant Eu 3+ and the interstitial O acted as defects in the host BaAl 2 O 4 lattice, which increased the lattice strain from 0.02% for pure BaAl 2 O 4 to 0.17% for the Eu-doped sample. Crystallite sizes in the samples increased with Eu doping from 32 nm for pure BaAl 2 O 4 to 36 nm for Eu-doped BaAl 2 O 4 . This could likely be related to the increase in the diffusion rate of the cations in the sample when a part of the Ba 2+ cation content was exchanged with smaller Eu 3+ cations. The Eu-doped BaAl 2 O 4 sample exhibited red photoluminescence under excitation with λ exc = 308 nm. The observed emission spectrum indicated that Eu 3+ ions occupied the Ba site with lower symmetry in the doped sample.

Secondary phases zinc sulfide/selenide and copper sulfide in Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) thin film samples are investigated by X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis at the chalcogen K-edges. Because of the formation of secondary phases the composition of the kesterite phase can deviate significantly from the total sample composition. For a large set of non-stoichiometric samples we find that the cation ratios of the kesterite phase never exceed Zn/Sn = 1 even for Zn-rich CZTS and CZTSe, with all excess Zn being contained in secondary phases. For CZTS the cation ratios are found to be additionally constrained by Cu/Sn ≤ 2, which means that Cu-excess always leads to the formation of CuxS secondary phases. These results give clear bounds on the Cu-rich and Zn-rich sides of the single phase region in polycrystalline CZTS/Se thin films.

The quick-EXAFS (QEXAFS) method adds time resolution to X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and allows dynamic structural changes to be followed. A completely new QEXAFS setup consisting of monochromator, detectors and data acquisition system is presented, as installed at the SuperXAS bending-magnet beamline at the Swiss Light Source (Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland). The monochromator uses Si(111) and Si(311) channel-cut crystals mounted on one crystal stage, and remote exchange allows an energy range from 4.0 keV to 32 keV to be covered. The spectral scan range can be electronically adjusted up to several keV to cover multiple absorption edges in one scan. The determination of the Bragg angle close to the position of the crystals allows high-accuracy measurements. Absorption spectra can be acquired with fast gridded ionization chambers at oscillation frequencies of up to 50 Hz resulting in a time resolution of 10 ms, using both scan directions of each oscillation period. The carefully developed low-noise detector system yields high-quality absorption data. The unique setup allows both state-of-the-art QEXAFS and stable step-scan operation without the need to exchange whole monochromators. The long-term stability of the Bragg angle was investigated and absorption spectra of reference materials as well as of a fast chemical reaction demonstrate the overall capabilities of the new setup.

Powder BaAl2O4 samples doped with 0 and 1.76 atom % Cr in relation to Al were hydrothermally prepared. Both samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and synchrotron based X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Cr K- and the Ba L3-edge. Diffraction patterns indicated that samples were nanocrystalline with a hexagonal crystal structure, space group P63. Chromium doping of barium aluminate caused an increase of the unit-cell volume and diffraction line broadening. The doped sample contained a small amount of an impurity phase, namely, BaCrO4. Analyzed Cr K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure for the doped sample showed the presence of chromium in 6+ and 3+ oxidation states: Cr(6+) was characteristic for chromium in the impurity phase BaCrO4, while Cr(3+) participated in the formation of the doped phase BaAl2O4:Cr. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure suggested an unusual tetrahedral coordination of Cr(3+) ions within the BaAl2O4 host phase. The structure of samples was refined by the Rietveld method, simultaneously with the analysis of diffraction line broadening. Rietveld structure refinement showed that in doping the Cr(3+) ions likely substituted for Al(3+) ions on Al1 tetrahedral sites of barium aluminate crystal lattice. Crystallite sizes in the samples decreased with chromium doping, from 32 nm for pure BaAl2O4 to 24 nm for Cr-doped BaAl2O4. The dopant Cr(3+) cations acted as defects in the barium aluminate structure that increased lattice strain from 0.02% for pure BaAl2O4 to 0.14% for doped BaAl2O4 and disturbed the crystallites to grow.

The design and capabilities of a novel Quick scanning Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (QEXAFS) monochromator are presented. The oscillatory movement of the crystal stage is realized by means of a unique open-loop driving scheme operating a direct drive torque motor. The entire drive mechanics are installed inside of a goniometer located on the atmospheric side of the vacuum chamber. This design allows remote adjustment of the oscillation frequency and spectral range, giving complete control of QEXAFS measurements. It also features a real step-scanning mode, which operates without a control loop to prevent induced vibrations. Equipped with Si(111) and Si(311) crystals on a single stage, it facilitates an energy range from 4.0 keV to 43 keV. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra up to k = 14.4 Å(-1) have been acquired within 17 ms and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra covering more than 200 eV within 10 ms. The achieved data quality is excellent as shown by the presented measurements.

We have completed an ultra-high vacuum system for sensitive fast electron spectroscopy from cold cathodes in triode configuration under high electric fields E (<100 MV/m) and pulsed tunable laser illumination (3.5 ns, 10 Hz, hν = 0.5-5.9 eV, and 0.3-17 mJ). The cathodes are prepared and inserted under clean room conditions and can be precisely 3D-positioned, cooled or heated (77-400 K). Commissioning results with the upgraded system are presented. Field emission measurements with a W tip yielded an energy resolution of 14 meV at 4 eV pass energy and a precise determination of the emitter work function, size, and temperature. Photoemission spectroscopy of short electron bunches from a virgin and laser-ablated S-GaP crystal and quantum efficiency measurements revealed surface states, energy relaxation, and band structure effects. In conclusion, this novel system is ready now for the development and characterization of photo-induced field emission cathodes.

Colourless solutions of blue light-emitting, water-soluble gold nanoclusters (AuNC) were synthesized from gold colloids under microwave irradiation using small organic molecules as ligands. Stabilized by 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (TPA) or L-glutamine (GLU), fluorescence quantum yields up to 5% were obtained. AuNC are considered to be very promising for biological labelling, optoelectronic devices and light-emitting materials but the structure-property relationships have still not been fully clarified. To expand the knowledge about the AuNC apart from their fluorescent properties they were studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy elucidating the oxidation state of the nanoclusters' gold atoms. Based on curve fitting of the XANES spectra in comparison to several gold references, optically transparent fluorescent AuNC are predicted to be ligand-stabilized Au5(+) species. Additionally, their near edge structure compared with analogous results of polynuclear clusters known from the literature discloses an increasing intensity of the feature close to the absorption edge with decreasing cluster size. As a result, a linear relationship between the cluster size and the X-ray absorption coefficient can be established for the first time.

A fast X-ray chopper capable of producing ms long X-ray pulses with a typical rise time of few μs was realized. It is ideally suited to investigate the temporal response of X-ray detectors with response times of the order of μs to ms, in particular, any kind of ionization chambers and large area photo diodes. The drive mechanism consists of a brushless DC motor and driver electronics from a common hard disk drive, keeping the cost at an absolute minimum. Due to its simple construction and small dimensions, this chopper operates at home lab based X-ray tubes and synchrotron radiation sources as well. The dynamics of the most important detectors used in time resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy, namely, ionization chambers and Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon photodiodes, were investigated in detail. The results emphasize the applicability of this X-ray chopper.

The layout and the characteristics of the hard X-ray beamline BL10 at the superconducting asymmetric wiggler at the 1.5 GeV Dortmund Electron Accelerator DELTA are described. This beamline is equipped with a Si(111) channel-cut monochromator and is dedicated to X-ray studies in the spectral range from ∼4 keV to ∼16 keV photon energy. There are two different endstations available. While X-ray absorption studies in different detection modes (transmission, fluorescence, reflectivity) can be performed on a designated table, a six-axis kappa diffractometer is installed for X-ray scattering and reflectivity experiments. Different detector set-ups are integrated into the beamline control software, i.e. gas-filled ionization chambers, different photodiodes, as well as a Pilatus 2D-detector are permanently available. The performance of the beamline is illustrated by high-quality X-ray absorption spectra from several reference compounds. First applications include temperature-dependent EXAFS experiments from liquid-nitrogen temperature in a bath cryostat up to ∼660 K by using a dedicated furnace. Besides transmission measurements, fluorescence detection for dilute sample systems as well as surface-sensitive reflection-mode experiments are presented.

We realized an advanced apparatus for the investigation of emitted X-rays produced by peeling adhesive tape rolls under vacuum conditions. Two stepper motors can unwind and rewind a tape roll, and an additional roller with an optical encoder provides measurement and control of the tape speed. This way reproducible and consecutive experiments are feasible without having to change the tape or break the vacuum. The dependence of the X-ray emission on tape speed, gas pressure, type of adhesive tape, and detector angle has been investigated. The resulting spectra are continuous and span an X-ray energy range of typically 2-60 keV with high intensity. Furthermore, the new apparatus allows the in situ metalization of adhesive tape rolls by a gold sputter source. A significantly increased X-ray emission was observed for adhesive tapes with a metal coating. Thin metal foils have been placed between the tape and the detector, different K- and L-absorption edges could be measured. A considerable enhancement of the emission was achieved under the influence of the magnetic field of an NdFeB permanent magnet.

New approaches to analyze the data generated by modern time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy instrumentation are presented as part of a new analysis software to handle files containing typically a few thousand EXAFS spectra. Various filter techniques to remove high-frequency noise and run-away values are discussed as well as advanced analysis tools like linear combination fitting, EXAFS fitting, principal component analysis and phase-sensitive detection. These techniques were implemented in a user-friendly graphical user interface to analyse huge data files where it is not possible to treat each spectrum separately. New ideas to exploit existent tools more efficiently for time-resolved EXAFS data analysis are discussed theoretically as well as applied to real measurements, especially in situ catalytic experiments and surface-sensitive reflection-mode X-ray absorption studies of thin film growth.

We have constructed a new ultrahigh vacuum apparatus with a triode configuration for the systematic investigation of photo-induced field emission (PFE) from metallic or semiconducting cathodes. These are exposed to electric fields up to 400 MV∕m and laser irradiation by means of hole or mesh gates. Cathodes and gates are in situ exchangeable and adjustable with high precision to ensure a homogeneous extraction of electrons which are partially transmitted to the fixed electron spectrometer. Its hemispherical sector analyzer provides an energy resolution limit of 8 meV. The commissioning of the measurement system has been performed with a tungsten needle. Its temperature showed up in the high-energy tail of the electron spectrum, while its work function was derived from the spectral low-energy part combined with the integral current-voltage curve. First PFE measurements on B-doped Si-tip arrays yielded a small field emission current increase under green laser illumination. A shift and splitting of the energy spectra was observed which revealed different emission regimes as well as the photosensitivity of the cathode due to carrier excitation into the conduction band. For the full exploitation of the PFE system, a tunable laser over a wide eV-range is required.

The structure/property relationships of fluorochlorozirconate glass ceramics as a function of divalent and trivalent europium (Eu) co-doping and thermal processing have been investigated; the influence of doping ratio on the formation of barium chloride (BaCl(2)) nanocrystals therein was elucidated. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy shows that the post-thermal annealing changes the Eu valence of the as-poured glass slightly, but during the melting process Eu(3+) is more strongly reduced to Eu(2+), in particular, when doped as a chloride instead of fluoride compound. The Eu(2+)-to-Eu(3+) doping ratio also plays a significant role in chemical equilibrium in the melt. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that a higher Eu(2+) fraction leads to a BaCl(2) phase transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic structure at a lower temperature.

To meet the demands of the QEXAFS (quick-scanning extended X-ray absorption fine structure) technique for a fast, user-friendly and flexible data acquisition a new stand-alone system with new software exploiting a multi-functional USB board was designed. The chosen approach allows the scanning of several analogue and digital data sources with up to 500000 samples each second over hours storable in binary or ASCII format without any dead-time. At the same time it is possible to visualize the acquired data instantaneously which provides a maximum of interactivity during the running experiment and also optimal conditions to select the best suited beamline and detector settings prior to each measurement. Furthermore, the QEXAFS monochromator and typically three current amplifiers are entirely controlled by the new software so that all monochromator settings can be synchronized with the data acquisition enabling programmed scans with alternating parameter sets. This versatile concept also enables the user to react immediately to changes in the sample during in situ studies. An interface to a three-axis stepper motor control unit is additionally included to control a sample stage which can again be synchronized with the data acquisition. Thus, spatially resolved scans and the usage of scan tools for sample alignment are feasible with the new system. Typical examples to demonstrate the features of the new data acquisition system are presented, the designed graphical user interface is described in detail and, furthermore, the crucial design parameters of a typical QEXAFS set-up are discussed.

A new monochromator setup for quick scanning x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the subsecond time regime is presented. Novel driving mechanics allow changing the energy range of the acquired spectra by remote control during data acquisition for the first time, thus dramatically increasing the flexibility and convenience of this method. Completely new experiments are feasible due to the fact that time resolution, edge energy, and energy range of the acquired spectra can be changed continuously within seconds without breaking the vacuum of the monochromator vessel and even without interrupting the measurements. The advanced mechanics are explained in detail and the performance is characterized with x-ray absorption spectra of pure metal foils. The energy scale was determined by a fast and accurate angular encoder system measuring the Bragg angle of the monochromator crystal with subarcsecond resolution. The Bragg angle range covered by the oscillating crystal can currently be changed from 0 degrees to 3.0 degrees within 20 s, while the mechanics are capable to move with frequencies of up to ca. 35 Hz, leading to ca. 14 ms/spectrum time resolution. A new software package allows performing programmed scan sequences, which enable the user to measure stepwise with alternating parameters in predefined time segments. Thus, e.g., switching between edges scanned with the same energy range is possible within one in situ experiment, while also the time resolution can be varied simultaneously. This progress makes the new system extremely user friendly and efficient to use for time resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy at synchrotron radiation beamlines.

The dynamics of the ignition and extinction of the catalytic partial oxidation (CPO) of methane to hydrogen and carbon monoxide over Pt-Rh/Al(2)O(3) and Pt/Al(2)O(3) were studied in the subsecond timescale using quick-EXAFS with a novel cam-driven X-ray monochromator employing Si(111) and Si(311) crystals. The experiments were performed under reaction conditions in a small fixed-bed capillary reactor. For the first time XAS data were taken with this QEXAFS technique with a Si(311) crystal that opens the energy range up to 35 keV. In addition, both XANES and EXAFS data are shown at the Pt L(3)-edge, allowing to discuss the potential and limitation of this technique in catalysis and related areas. With respect to the noble metal catalysed partial oxidation of methane, several interesting observations were made: structural changes during ignition were-independent of the chosen reaction conditions-significantly faster than during the extinction of the reaction. The dynamic behavior of the catalysts was dependent on the flow conditions and the respective noble metal component(s). Higher reaction gas flow led to a faster ignition process. While the ignition over Pt-Rh/Al(2)O(3) occurred at lower temperature than over Pt/Al(2)O(3), the structural changes during ignition were significantly faster in the latter case. The rate of reduction of the catalyst during ignition was also dependent on the axial position in the fixed-bed. The spectroscopic results provide important insight into the ignition and extinction behavior of the CPO of methane and are complementing results from time-resolved infrared thermography and full field X-ray microscopy studies.

Upon lithium insertion in the pristine TiO2 anatase phase the theoretical maximum of LiTiO2 can be reached in crystallite sizes less than approximately 10 nm, whereas bulk compositions appear limited to Li(x) approximately 0.6TiO2 at room temperature. Both X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and ab initio calculations have been applied to probe the electronic structure of the newly formed LiTiO2 phase. These results indicate that a large majority of the Li-2s electrons reside at the Ti-3d(t2g)/4s hybridized site. About 10% of these electrons are transferred to non-localized states which makes this compound a good electronic conductor. Ionic conductivity is probed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation experiments indicating relatively small hopping rates between the Li-ion sites in LiTiO2. Formation of the poor ionic-conducting LiTiO2 at the surface of the particles explains why micro-anatase Li(x)TiO2 is not able to reach the theoretical maximum capacity at room temperature, and why this theoretical maximum capacity reached in nano-sized materials cannot be (dis)charged at high rates.

The calculation of reflection-mode grazing-incidence X-ray absorption spectra from single surfaces and (multi-)layered systems is studied here. In particular, the influence of the surface and interface roughness was investigated in detail. Simulations of grazing-incidence reflection-mode EXAFS spectra using a simple Fresnel theory neglecting any effect of roughness are compared with the Névot-Croce model and the elaborated distorted-wave Born approximation which both include surface and interface roughness. Data are presented for clean gold surfaces, where the strong influence of the surface roughness on the resulting spectra is demonstrated. Furthermore, in the case of layered systems, the influence of both the outer (air or vacuum side) surface roughness and the inner interface roughness on the reflection-mode EXAFS spectra is evaluated. The practical consequences of the observed correlations are discussed, and a quantitative data analysis of a copper sample that was oxidized in ambient air for several months is shown, including the evaluation of specular reflectivity profiles at fixed energy.

The hard X-ray beamline BL8 at the superconducting asymmetric wiggler at the 1.5 GeV Dortmund Electron Accelerator DELTA is described. This beamline is dedicated to X-ray studies in the spectral range from approximately 1 keV to approximately 25 keV photon energy. The monochromator as well as the other optical components of the beamline are optimized accordingly. The endstation comprises a six-axis diffractometer that is capable of carrying heavy loads related to non-ambient sample environments such as, for example, ultrahigh-vacuum systems, high-pressure cells or liquid-helium cryostats. X-ray absorption spectra from several reference compounds illustrate the performance. Besides transmission measurements, fluorescence detection for dilute sample systems as well as surface-sensitive reflection-mode experiments have been performed. The results show that high-quality EXAFS data can be obtained in the quick-scanning EXAFS mode within a few seconds of acquisition time, enabling time-resolved in situ experiments using standard beamline equipment that is permanently available. The performance of the new beamline, especially in terms of the photon flux and energy resolution, is competitive with other insertion-device beamlines worldwide, and several sophisticated experiments including surface-sensitive EXAFS experiments are feasible.

New concepts for time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy using the quick-extended x-ray absorption fine structure (QEXAFS) method are presented. QEXAFS is a powerful tool to gain structural information about, e.g., fast chemical reactions or phase transitions on a subsecond scale. This can be achieved with a monochromator design that employs a channel-cut crystal on a cam driven tilt table for rapid angular oscillations of the Bragg angle. A new angular encoder system and a new data acquisition were described and characterized that were applied to a QEXAFS monochromator to get spectra with a directly measured accurate energy scale. New electronics were designed to allow a fast acquisition of the Bragg angle values and the absorption data during the measurements simultaneously.

An in situ cell has been constructed for temperature-dependent X-ray absorption experiments (EXAFS and XANES) of lead bromine (PbBr2) solutions in diethylene glycol in the temperature range from room temperature up to about 433 K. The solution is kept in a thermostated container made of carbon-reinforced teflon between two thin chemically inert quartz glass windows with a high transmission for hard X-rays. The construction of the cell ensures that these X-ray windows are thermalized so that any possible precipitation of solid products from the solution is inhibited. The cell consists mainly of two hermetically sealed teflon containers for the thermostating fluid (silicon oil) that were fitted together in such a way that a small and variable volume (approximately 2-4 cm3) for the liquid under investigation was achieved. A small thermocouple in a glass enclosure was placed in the solution to maintain temperature control and feedback to the thermostat. The cell design and its performance for temperature-dependent in situ investigations with X-rays are reported. Some preliminary results obtained for PbBr2 solutions in diethylene glycol are given.

Time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (Quick-XANES) has been combined with UV-vis and Raman spectroscopies to study the in situ reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ in ethanolic solution with a time resolution of ca. 4-5 s. For this purpose, a cam-driven oscillating double-crystal monochromator with a channel-cut crystal was combined with two spectrometers for UV-vis and Raman spectroscopies in a specialized cell which allows one to fit the optical pathways for all three spectroscopies individually. The results show that high-quality results can be obtained simultaneously, thus giving a detailed insight into the mechanisms of the investigated chemical reaction. The continuous release of nitrate and ethanol ligands from the initial Ce4+ into the solution finally leads to a trivalent cerium species which is only coordinated with water molecules after about 1800 s of reaction time.

The Piezo-QEXAFS technique is a novel tool for time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the hard X-ray range. Monochromator components consisting of specialized tilt stages to perform fast energy scans, lightweight crystal holders, bending mechanics, and control electronics are being installed and commissioned. It is planned to perform fast EXAFS scans with time resolution in the millisecond range. With Piezo-QEXAFS all typical X-ray absorption experiments will be possible as it retains the standard linear geometry. The achieved time resolution opens interesting insights into the dynamics of phase transitions and chemical reactions.

Amorphous Ta-oxide and Sn-nitride thin films were prepared by reactive sputter deposition on smooth float glass substrates and investigated ex situ using reflection mode XAFS. The absorption coefficient mu and its fine structure were extracted from the measured reflection mode XAFS spectra with a method based on the Kramers-Kronig transform. Bond distances, coordination numbers and Debye-Waller factors were determined by a detailed XAFS data analysis and compared to those of reference compounds. In addition, changes of the atomic short range order of the sputter deposited Ta2O5-films induced by a thermal heat treatment in ambient air were examined as a function of the annealing temperature.

Tin nitrides (Sn3N4) prepared by the reaction of Sn-halides with KNH2 in liquid ammonia and a subsequent vacuum annealing procedure were investigated with transmission mode XAFS experiments. While the near edge data suggest the presence of a univalent Sn-compound with a valency close to +4, the analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure proves the presence of two different local Sn sites in this crystal structure: While Sn(1) is surrounded by 4 nitrogen in a distance of 2.06 A, each Sn(2) ion is coordinated with 6 nitrogen at about 2.17 A radial distance.

First X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments with a vibrating piezo-driven double-crystal monochromator (piezo-QEXAFS) and fluorescence detection are reported. It is shown that high-quality XANES spectra can be recorded on a time scale of about 50 ms per spectrum, even for very low concentrations of < 10 mmol l-1 using fluorescence detection. The quality of the spectra, possible applications, as well as present limits of the technique will be discussed.
