Background: The growing body of knowledge on the human genome and its variants points towards the significance of genetic factors in oral health and disease. Since the dental curricula have historically prioritized clinically oriented subjects, this focus has resulted in insufficient coverage of genetics. To leverage this knowledge in patient care, dental education must equip students with an understanding of the principles of genetics. Method : We have established "Genetic Educators Network in Dentistry" (GEN-Dent) to identify common concerns regarding genetics in dental education and work for a greater emphasis on genetics in future dental programs to make sure that professionals in dentistry are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the evolving "human genome era". Results: Here, GEN-Dent proposes specific learning goals for medical genetics in dentistry and provides supporting teaching material addressing each learning goal. The five life-like case studies exemplify different dental conditions and introduce important concepts of genetics, inspiring other educators. Conclusions : Opportunities in Scandinavian countries can be an advantage in increasing global awareness of the importance of genetics in dentistry. The integration of genetics into dental education not only aims to improve patient care but also seeks to inspire a new generation of basic scientists with clinical backgrounds in dentistry. We expect that using life-like patient cases will significantly motivate dental students when learning medical genetics.

Introduction: In veterinary education programs it is important to have a balance between providing students with valuable hands-on experience and ensuring the ethical treatment and welfare of the animals involved. In the last years simulation-based veterinary education played an important role helping with the replacement of experimental animals in education and at the same time creating a safe learning environment offering endless options for training in a safe environment. The aim of this systematic review was to discern which type of learning outcomes are used to evaluate specific learning goals of clinical skills training and to grasp the impact of diverse simulator characteristics on the measured learning outcomes in clinical skills training., Methods: A systematic search from 1977 until November 2023 has been conducted resulting in 103 included papers. The categories, learning goals, learning activities, and learning outcomes in clinical skills training were used for data extraction of all included studies., Results: This study investigated the interplay between learning goals, learning activities, and learning outcomes. Competence and knowledge were the most frequently described learning outcomes; static and screen-based simulators are the are most frequently used technologies. Static simulators are primarily used to train procedural steps and screen-based simulators are primarily used to train relevant knowledge and clinical reasoning. Notably, none of the reviewed studies made explicit connections between learning goals, learning activities, and learning outcomes., Discussion: In simulation-based education it is important to provide a structured, constructively aligned process where students gain relevant and effective experience. Street maps are sometimes complex. They may show landmark names, locations, routes between landmarks, and where landmarks are relative to one another. Map learners may aim to learn one map component, like landmark locations, but later must remember a different component, such as routes. In other words, congruency between learning goals and tests may contribute to map memory. Further, research demonstrates that complex knowledge acquisition may be improved when metacognitive processes are congruent with tested material. The present work examined the relationship between learning goals, a type of metacognitive monitoring judgment referred to as judgments of learning (JOLs), and tests of map learning to determine whether congruency between goals and JOL prompts (Exp 1) and JOL prompts and tests (Exp 2) influenced memory and metacognitive accuracy. Congruency between learning goals and JOL prompts contributed to metacognitive accuracy, particularly when map components were highly complex. Contrary to our hypotheses, congruency between JOL prompts and tests did not contribute to memory or metacognitive accuracy. Our results suggest learners could accurately predict their memory, and cues such as map complexity and information accumulation across learning trials influenced rating magnitude., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Academic cheating is a problem that affects many educational institutions and has become increasingly significant with the new challenges of online education. Recent studies have found that learning goals are correlated with cheating behavior among students. In this study, we investigated whether learning goals are still a predictor of cheating behavior when controlling for students' Honesty-Humility (emanated from the HEXACO model of personality) within a sample of 311 German university students. Regrading students' learning goals, we assessed their learning approach, performance approach, performance avoidance, and work avoidance. The result shows an intermediate negative and highly significant association between Honesty-Humility and academic cheating. Learning goals did not explain any incremental variance in academic cheating that goes beyond the Honesty-Humility factor. As the only exception, the work avoidance goal was found to also predict cheating behavior, but this positive association seems to be not as strong as the negative correlation between Honesty-Humility and academic cheating. Background: Establishing and achieving learning goals (LGs) are important lifelong learning skills for residents. Faculty are critical in facilitation and achievement of residents' LGs, yet many have difficulty with this role in the busy inpatient setting., Objectives: Our primary aim was to improve faculty engagement in resident LGs, targeting ≥80% of faculty achieving a mean score ≥goal, over a period of 1 year by setting prerotation expectations and stressing team-based faculty accountability during the rotation in the current inpatient learning environment., Methods: We identified key barriers to addressing LGs on an inpatient subspecialty service. Key interventions included 1) introducing LGs to faculty, 2) establishing a communication/handover process among faculty, 3) LGs development, and 4) tracking accountability. Baseline mean faculty milestone scores were determined from the prior year. Over 1 year, we developed and refined a system for residents to create and document LGs with faculty oversight and review. We reviewed faculty evaluations quarterly to measure progress and reviewed rotation evaluations., Results: Faculty engagement with LGs improved through the course of the academic year. All but one faculty member had improved LGs scores during the intervention year. Most residents were very satisfied with the intervention and gave unprompted favorable feedback on rotation evaluations. The majority of submitted LGs were either partially or completely addressed., Conclusions: We demonstrated that a quality improvement approach to a faculty educational skill is feasible and effective. Previous literature has discussed the different views, the diverse goals and scope of ethics education, and the need for a more homogenous curriculum in medical ethics. Since ethics is about values, and values are partly influenced by culture, we question to what extent teachers' perceptions concerning learning goals of medical ethics curricula are similar or different in two different countries, and if differences in learning goals are acceptable or problematic. We conducted in-depth interviews with 36 medical ethics teachers, 20 from Indonesia and 16 from the Netherlands, and explored what they think are the important learning goals. We found three similar goals, with slightly different perceptions, between the two groups: (1) being professional, (2) dealing with ethical problems, and (3) being part of society. We also found four other goals that differed between the two countries: (4) understanding one-self and (5) learning from others from the Netherlands; (6) being faithful/pious and (7) obeying rules/standards from Indonesia. We suggest that despite similar goals shared globally, there might be differences in how teachers in different cultural contexts perceive the goals with their local values and translate them into the curricula. Differences in learning goals are common and natural, often reflected by historical and sociocultural contexts, and should not become a barrier for teachers in different regions to collaborate. Understanding these differences may be an important goal for teachers themselves to broaden their knowledge and perspectives.

Neuroanatomy is difficult for psychology students because of spatial visualization and the relationship among brain structures. Some technologies have been implemented to facilitate the learning of anatomy using three-dimensional (3D) visualization of anatomy contents. Augmented reality (AR) is a promising technology in this field. A mobile AR application to provide the visualization of morphological and functional information of the brain was developed. A sample of 67 students of neuropsychology completed tests for visuospatial ability, anatomical knowledge, learning goals, and experience with technologies. Subsequently, they performed a learning activity using one of the visualization methods considered: a 3D method using the AR application and a two-dimensional (2D) method using a textbook to color, followed by questions concerning their satisfaction and knowledge. After using the alternative method, the students expressed their preference. The two methods improved knowledge equally, but the 3D method obtained higher satisfaction scores and was more preferred by students. The 3D method was also more preferred by the students who used this method during the activity. After controlling for the method used in the activity, associations were found between the preference of the 3D method because of its usability and experience with technologies. These results found that the AR application was highly valued by students to learn and was as effective as the textbook for this purpose., (© 2021 The Authors. To research teachers' priorities on what was to be taught and learned during the COVID-19 lockdown, we asked Spanish Primary and Secondary teachers to choose and describe the activity they preferred among those carried out with their students during the pandemic. Our interest was to investigate what really happened in the classrooms, the type of learning favored by the practices (reproductive vs. constructive), and the agreement between the teacher's goals and their teaching We obtained 272 activities that we analyzed according to the proposed goals, the types of learning worked (verbal, procedural, and attitudinal), and the kind of teaching promoted (content or student-centered). Results showed that most teachers proposed content-centered activities, oriented above all to verbal learning. There were clear differences between the proposed goals, partly student-centered, and what was really taught, essentially content-centered. This paper aims to review the empirical and theoretical research on engineering ethics education, by focusing on the challenges reported in the literature. The analysis is conducted at four levels of the engineering education system. First, the individual level is dedicated to findings about teaching practices reported by instructors. Second, the institutional level brings together findings about the implementation and presence of ethics within engineering programmes. Third, the level of policy situates findings about engineering ethics education in the context of accreditation. Finally, there is the level of the culture of engineering education. The multi-level analysis allows us to address some of the limitations of higher education research which tends to focus on individual actors such as instructors or remains focused on the levels of policy and practice without examining the deeper levels of paradigm and purpose guiding them. Our approach links some of the challenges of engineering ethics education with wider debates about its guiding paradigms. The main contribution of the paper is to situate the analysis of the theoretical and empirical findings reported in the literature on engineering ethics education in the context of broader discussions about the purpose of engineering education and the aims of reform programmes. Background: Achieving changing needs, advancing knowledge, and innovations in higher education require the constant changes of medical school curricula and successfully applying the new reforms requires some modifications in the medical educators' core beliefs. The purpose of this study was to describe the medical educators' beliefs about the alignment of the learning goals with teaching and assessment processes in the context of the curriculum changes., Method: A qualitative method was used to study the medical educators' beliefs through selecting the faculty participants via a purposeful sampling strategy. The study was conducted at a Medical School in Iran. For the individual interviews, we invited both the professors of the basic sciences and the clinical professors who had thought medical students for at least 5 years. Ten educators were interviewed., Result: The results of the research showed that, in the professors' viewpoints, the development of competencies in the students has been abandoned and this is due to the priority of treatment to education in the clinical courses and the limited learning experiences. Moreover, the gap between the content and the context and the attendance of the students in the hospitals instead of the clinics to pass their internship courses has reduced the provision of authentic learning experiences. These conditions have affected the quality of education negatively. The non-systematic assessment has also worsened the situation., Conclusion: Despite the changes in the curriculum, the compartmentalization of the curriculum and the structure of the medical education have caused the professors' beliefs to be in line with the past perspectives. This commentary expands on the recent critical review by Swann et al. (2020) which aimed to update the applications of Goal-Setting Theory (Locke & Latham, 2019) in physical activity promotion. Drawing from other work on goal striving and behaviour change, we make four key points to further elaborate on Swann et al.'s review. First, goals are more likely to be enacted if they are specific, personally relevant and pursued for autonomous motives; performance goals can be useful for inactive individuals if set appropriately and self-endorsed. Second, goal striving needs to be flexible and adjustable, and to consider goal priorities and time factors relevant to goal engagement and disengagement. Goal-Setting Theory would therefore benefit from being expanded to add the factors of goal priority, context, and time. Third, research on goal setting in physical activity could benefit from embracing idiographic designs and interventions. Fourth, other theoretical approaches to goal striving should be considered when discussing goal setting in physical activity promotion.

Evolution is a key concept of biology, fundamental to understand the world and address important societal problems, but research studies show that it is still not widely understood and accepted. Several factors are known to influence evolution acceptance and understanding, but little information is available regarding the impacts of the curriculum on these aspects. Very few curricula have been examined to assess the coverage of biological evolution. The available studies do not allow comparative analyses, due to the different methodologies employed by the authors. However, such an analysis would be useful for research purposes and for the development of appropriate educational policies to address the problem of a lack of evolution acceptance in some countries. In this paper we describe the steps through which we developed a valid and reliable instrument for curricula analysis known as FACE: "Framework to Assess the Coverage of biological Evolution by school curricula." This framework was developed based on the "Understanding Evolution Conceptual Framework" (UECF). After an initial pilot study, our framework was reformulated based on identified issues and experts' opinions. To generate validity and reliability evidence in support of the framework, it was applied to four European countries' curricula. For each country, a team of a minimum of two national and two foreign coders worked independently to assess the curriculum using this framework for content analysis. Reliability evidence was estimated using Krippendorf's alpha and resulted in appropriate values for coding the examined curricula. Some issues that coders faced during the analysis were discussed and, to ensure better reliability for future researchers, additional guidelines and one extra category were included in the framework. The final version of the framework includes six categories and 34 subcategories. Background : Residents are expected to develop the skills to set learning goals. Setting learning goals is part of self-regulated learning, setting the foundation for creating a learning plan, deploying learning strategies, and assessing their progress to those goals. While effective goal setting is essential to resident self-regulated learning, residents struggle with setting learning goals and desire faculty assistance with goal setting. Objective : We aimed to characterize the topics and quality of residents' rotation-specific learning goals. Design : We conducted a prospective study of 153 internal medicine residents, assessing 455 learning goals for general medicine inpatient rotations. We coded learning goal themes, competencies, and learning domains, and assessed quality using the validated Learning Goal Scoring Rubric. We compared topic categories, competencies, learning domains, and quality between the first and second months of postgraduate (PGY)-1 residents and between PGY-1 and PGY-3 residents. We assessed factors associated with learning goal completion. Results : The overall response rate was 80%. The top three learning goal categories were patient management, specific diseases related to general medicine, and teaching skills. There were no changes in learning goal characteristics between PGY-1 months (p ≥ 0.04). There were differences between PGY-1 and PGY-3 residents' learning goals in patient management (28% vs 6%; p < .001), specific disease conditions (19% vs 3%; p < .001), and teaching skills (2% vs 56%; p < .001). There was no difference in learning goal quality between PGY-1 months (1.63 vs. 1.67; p = 0.82). The PGY-3 learning goals were of higher quality than PGY-1 learning goals for the 'specific goal' item (1.38 vs. 0.98, p = 0.005), but not for other items or overall (all p ≥ 0.02). Residents reported 85% (297/347) learning goal completion. Conclusions : Resident rotation-specific learning goals reflect a broad array of topics. Residents' learning goal quality was low and residents may benefit from guidance to support residents' learning goals.

Theory: Self-regulated learning theory suggests that individualized learning plans can benefit medical trainees by providing a structured means of goal setting, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation. External feedback also plays an important role in affecting learner motivations, perceptions, and self-evaluations. Accordingly, having learners share individualized learning plans with preceptors might promote self-regulated learning by helping align the feedback they receive with their learning goals. Hypothesis : We hypothesized having medical students share individualized learning plans with attendings and residents would improve the quality of the feedback they received, increase the likelihood that feedback correlated to their learning goals, and improve their perceptions of feedback received. Method : In this multisite study, third-year medical students on their pediatric clerkship created individualized learning plans and shared them with residents and attendings by writing a learning goal on at least one of their required faculty feedback forms. The quality of feedback on forms with versus without a learning goal written on top was scored using a validated scoring tool and compared using a Wilcoxon signed-ranks test, and the frequency with which feedback directly correlated to a student learning goal on forms with versus without a learning goal written on top was compared using a chi-square test. Students completed a post-clerkship survey rating the quality of feedback and teaching they received, perceptions of the individualized learning plans, progress toward achieving learning goals, and whether or not they received teaching and/or feedback related to learning goals. Results : Thirty-six students completed a total of 108 learning goals and 181 feedback forms, of which 42 forms (23.2%) had a learning goal written on top. The mean ( SD ) feedback score between forms with [3.9 (0.9)] versus without [3.6 (0.6)] a learning goal written on top was not different ( p = .113). Feedback on forms with a learning goal written on top was more likely to correlate to a student learning goal than feedback on forms without a learning goal (92.9% vs 23.0% respectively, p < .001). Student perceptions of the usefulness of learning goals did not differ between students who reported receiving teaching or feedback related to a learning goal and those who did not. Conclusions : Sharing individualized learning plans with preceptors helped align feedback with learning goals but did not affect the quality of feedback. Further research should examine the bidirectional relationship between individualized learning plans and feedback in light of other contextual and interpersonal factors.

Objective: Developing resident autonomy in the operating room is a complex process and resident established case specific learning goals may increase resident operating room training efficiency. However, little is understood about residents' experience identifying learning goals for a given case. The aim of this study was to explore the essential components contributing to surgery residents' identification of specific learning goals for surgical cases., Design: We conducted focus group interviews with general surgery residents across all post-graduate years (PGY) through convenience sampling. Audio recordings of each interview were transcribed and iteratively analyzed. Emerging themes were identified using a framework method., Setting: The study was conducted within the Department of General Surgery at the Ohio State University Medical Center, a tertiary academic medical center., Participants: Eight junior (PGY 1-2) and 10 senior (PGY 3-5) residents participated, of whom 10 were female and 8 were male., Results: On average, each focus group interview lasted 57.00 (SD ± 12.99) minutes. Three essential components of residents' creation of case-specific learning goals emerged from the focus group interviews: medical knowledge, surgical experience and entrustment. Residents require baseline knowledge and surgical experience with an operation to identify the learning goal they would aim to execute. They also require entrustment of themselves and support of the attending to accomplish the case specific learning goal. Differences in the possession of these three components would likely influence differences in the ability to create learning goals between junior and senior residents., Conclusions: Medical knowledge, surgical experience and entrustment are 3 factors that are imperative to the creation of a resident's case specific learning goal. The complex combination of these three components contributes to the building of the learning goal prior to the start of the operation. Background: It is assumed that portfolios contribute to self-regulated learning (SRL). Presence of these SRL processes within the documentation kept in portfolios is presupposed in common educational practices, such as the assessment of reflective entries. However, questions can be asked considering the presence of SRL within portfolios. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the documentation of SRL processes within the electronic (e)-portfolio content of medical trainees. SRL consists of numerous processes, for this study the focus was on self-assessment via reflection and feedback, goal-setting and planning, and monitoring, as these are the processes that health professions education research mentions to be supported by portfolios., Methods: A database containing 1022 anonymous e-portfolios from General Practitioner trainees was used to provide descriptive statistics of the various available e-portfolio forms. This was followed by a quantitative content analysis of 90 e-portfolios, for which, a codebook was constructed to rate the documentation of the included SRL processes., Results: The numbers of forms in the e-portfolios varied to a great extent. Content analysis showed a limited documentation of reflective entries, and available entries mainly described events and experiences without explanations and context. Feedback was generally limited to comments on what went well and lacked specificity, context and suggestions for future action. Learning goals and plans were short of specificity, but did contain challenging topics and different goals were compatible with each other. 75% of the e-portfolios showed (limited) signs of monitoring., Conclusions: The e-portfolio content showed limited documentation of SRL processes. As documentation of SRL requires time and asks for a high level of introspection and writing skills, one cannot expect documentation of SRL processes to appear in e-portfolio content without efforts.

Individuals who believe that intelligence can be improved with effort (an incremental theory of intelligence) and who approach challenges with the goal of improving their understanding (a learning goal) tend to have higher academic achievement. Furthermore, parent praise is associated with children's incremental theories and learning goals. However, the influences of parental criticism, as well as different forms of praise and criticism (e.g., process vs. person), have received less attention. We examine these associations by analyzing two existing datasets (Study 1: N = 317 first to eighth graders; Study 2: N = 282 fifth and eighth graders). In both studies, older children held more incremental theories of intelligence, but lower learning goals, than younger children. Unexpectedly, the relation between theories of intelligence and learning goals was nonsignificant and did not vary with children's grade level. In both studies, overall perceived parent praise positively related to children's learning goals, whereas perceived parent criticism negatively related to incremental theories of intelligence. In Study 2, perceived parent process praise was the only significant (positive) predictor of children's learning goals, whereas perceived parent person criticism was the only significant (negative) predictor of incremental theories of intelligence. Finally, Study 2 provided some support for our hypothesis that age-related differences in perceived parent praise and criticism can explain age-related differences in children's learning goals. Results suggest that incremental theories of intelligence and learning goals might not be strongly related during childhood and that perceived parent praise and criticism have important, but distinct, relations with each motivational construct., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Background: Evaluations are important for teaching courses and contribute to educational quality assurance. CMF surgery provides a module in the skills-lab week in preparation for surgical clerkship. Even though the CMF module receives positive evaluations, the students report deviating content. Subsequently, exams skills were often not mastered correctly. The aim of this study is to gather the contents taught within the course and to revise the module accordingly., Methods: A structured evaluation sheet was used to evaluate the CMF modules. The detailed time frame used, teaching methods integrated, and learning objectives taught were documented. Based on the results, the module was restructured and re-evaluated twice., Results: There were substantial fluctuations among the taught learning objectives in the first evaluation (21%-47% of the objectives were totally covered). The deployed time (160.50 ± 32.55 min) for the module was much shorter than scheduled (210 min). After restructuring, more learning objectives were totally covered (44%-100%), which corresponds to a significant gain (p = .024). The deployed teaching time for the modules was used more efficiently (183.65 ± 21.10 min/p = .005), and the additional time (51.89 ± 21.23 min vs. 37.55 ± 16.06 min before/p = .011) was used mainly for practical exercises., Conclusion: Structured evaluations are a meaningful tool for gaining valuable insights regarding the contents and quality of teaching courses and pinpointing potential for improvement. Problem: Although self-regulated learning (SRL) is considered a fundamental skill that must be developed in physician training, many programs of SRL utilize learning goals that are generated only at the beginning of learning experiences or are widely spaced apart in time. These goals are often not formally shared with those actually working with the learner in the clinical setting., Intervention: We developed a program of written, student-generated weekly learning goals in which students focused on processes of becoming better doctors for their patients. These goals were shared at the beginning of each week with students' clinical teams for feedback and incorporation into the work., Context: The weekly learning goals program was developed and implemented as part of a required 3rd-year neurology clerkship. At the end of each 4-week clerkship, students were asked to evaluate the program through an anonymous electronic survey utilizing quantitative and open-ended qualitative questions., Outcome: Seventy-six of 82 students completed the evaluation survey (93% response rate). Eighty-six percent reported that the weekly learning goals increased their awareness of their thoughts and actions. Seventy-eight percent reported that the learning goals helped to improve their clinical performance to some degree, and 57% reported that the learning goals increased their focus on patient care. Students described a greater sense of focus on self-assessment and accountability from their goals. Students often commented that engagement from attendings and residents regarding their goals was a key element for successful learning from their goals., Lessons Learned: Student-generated weekly learning goals on a neurology clerkship appear to be an effective method to operationalize SRL. For most students, the frequency of the goals allowed for close self-monitoring, and the act of sharing goals with the team opened a new avenue for dialogue between students and their supervisors.

Background: 64% of young medical professionals in Germany do not feel adequately prepared for the practical requirements of the medical profession. The goal of "outcome-orientated training" is to structure medical curricula based on the skills needed when entering the workforce after completing undergraduate medical education, and thus to bridge the gap between the skills graduates have attained and those necessary for a career in the medical profession. Outcome frameworks (OFs) are used for this purpose. In preparation for developing the National Competence-Based Catalogue of Learning Objectives for Medicine (NKLM) - the German OF - the "Consensus Statement of Practical Skills in Undergraduate Medical Education" (which structures the teaching and acquisition of practical skills in Germany and which strongly influenced the "Clinical-Practical Skills" chapter of the NKLM) was published in 2011. It is not uncommon for at least a decade to elapse between the definition and implementation of an OF and the students' graduation, which can further increase the gap between necessary and acquired skills. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to posit theses for future development in healthcare and to apply these theses to a current OF., Methodology: Partially structured interviews with experts were used to generate theses pertaining to general, future development in healthcare. These theses were assessed by physician experts based on the likelihood of implementation by the year 2025. The 288 learning goals of the consensus statement were assessed for their relevance for medical education in the interim., Results: 11 theses were generated for the development of medicine, and these theses were assessed and discussed by 738 experts. These theses include the increase in diseases associated with old age, the increasing significance of interprofessional cooperation, and the growing prevalence of telemedicine applications. Of the 288 learning goals of the consensus statement, 231 of the goals were assessed as relevant, and 57 were deemed irrelevant for the short-term future., Discussion: The theses on the future of healthcare, which were generated in this study and which were validated by numerous experts, provide indications of future developments of overall requirements for medical school graduates. For example, when applied to the content of the "Clinical-Practical Skills" NKLM chapter, they largely validate the future relevance of developing practical skills while also providing indications for their further development as applied to the consensus statement.

Individualized learning plans (ILPs) are helpful tools that can facilitate learner-centered education and can be used with all levels of learners. We introduce the concept of ILPs, the rationale for their use in pediatric and adolescent gynecology education, and review the challenges that learners might face in creating ILPs, and describes how educators can support learners during this process., (Copyright © 2015 North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Objective: There is limited information as to whether graduates from postgraduate specialist medical training programmes in Australia and New Zealand feel prepared for practice, and none regarding the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists' (RANZCP) training programme. The aims of this study were: to assess the effectiveness of the RANZCP training programme in producing psychiatrists who feel prepared for their roles; and to obtain Fellowship applicants' perceptions of the training programme., Methods: Applicants for Fellowship (i.e. trainees who had successfully completed RANZCP training) were invited to complete an anonymous online survey that assessed their preparedness for practice and their impressions of the training programme, supervision, training specialties and course content., Results: The response rate was 66% from 101 applicants. Fellowship applicants largely felt prepared for practice and had positive perceptions of the training programme. The majority stated that most of their learning goals were met, but continued training and ongoing learning was required. Areas for improvement included assessments, administration, the balance between service delivery and training, and ongoing training., Conclusions: Fellowship applicants largely felt confident in their ability to deliver psychiatric services and that the training programme was meeting their needs.

There has been a growing emphasis on the use of core competencies to design and inform curricula. Based on our Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience workshop at Pomona we developed a set of neuroscience core competencies. Following the workshop, faculty members were asked to complete an online survey to determine which core competencies are considered most essential and the results are presented. Backward Design principles are then described and we discuss how core competencies, through a backward design process, can be used to design and assess an undergraduate neuroscience curriculum. Oberlin College is used as a case study to describe the use of core competencies to help develop learning objectives, activities, and assessment measures for an undergraduate neuroscience major.
