Urban reservoirs are frequently exposed to impacts from high population density, polluting activities, and the absence of environmental control measures and monitoring. In this study, we investigated the use of satellite imagery to assess restoration measures and support decision-making in a hypereutrophic urban reservoir. Since 2016, Lake Pampulha (Brazil) has undergone restoration measures, including the application of Phoslock®, to mitigate its poor water quality conditions. Satellite images from Landsat-8 (L8) and Sentinel-2 (S2) and historical monitoring data were used to estimate total suspended matter (TSM), chlorophyll-a (Chla), and Secchi disk depth (SDD). We explored both established models from existing literature and novel alternatives, the latter employing machine learning approaches. Model performance was assessed through the coefficient of determination (R 2 ) during calibration and using the root mean square error (RMSE) and its normalization by the observed mean (nRMSE) during validation. Random forest regressor presented superior performance for the three water quality parameters and both satellites. The performance metrics for Landsat-8 were TSM (n=44) R 2 of 0.62; Chla (n=48) R 2 of 0.74; and SDD (n=23) R 2 of 0.67. For Sentinel-2, TSM (n=53) R 2 of 0.72; Chla (n=54) R 2 of 0.64; SDD (n=33) R 2 of 0.89. The selected models were then applied to cloud-free images from 2013 to 2022 to provide modeled TSM, Chla, and SDD values. These were used for spatiotemporal analysis, encompassing cluster analysis, sample comparisons, and trend analysis. Three distinct regions within Lake Pampulha were identified, with the upstream region displaying poorer conditions for TSM, Chla, and SDD. Restoration measures have contributed positively to improving water quality in Lake Pampulha; however, rainy periods pose a challenge due to water quality deterioration associated with urban runoff. By monitoring evapotranspiration (ET), the exchange of water and energy between the soil, plants, and the atmosphere can be controlled. Routine estimations of ET on a daily, monthly, and seasonal basis can give relevant information on small-scale agricultural practices, such as the Ribb watershed in Ethiopia. However, MODIS sensors have recently given high temporal resolution ET products across large areas, but their low spatial resolution limits its application on a local scale. The primary goal of the study was to downscale the MODIS ET (1 km) product to a finer spatial resolution at the watershed level. The model's 12 predictor variables (NDVI, EVI, LAI, FVC, SAVI, NDMI, NDWI, Albedo, emissivity, LST, and DEM: slope and elevation) were produced using the random forest (RF) algorithm using Sentinel-2 (S-2) 20 m and Landsat-8 (L-8) 30 m. The RF regression model was used to assess the relationship between predicted variables and downscaled MODIS ET. The FAO-PM ET model, developed from meteorological stations, was validated by R 2 and RMSE for three seasons (rainy, post-rainy, and dry) in 2022. The results were in good agreement with MODIS ET, with an RMSE of 0.22 for S-2 and 0.28 for L-8. In the FAO-PM ET model, the downscaled result showed greater spatial details and better agreement with gage station readings ( R 2 ≈ 0.88 and 0.82 ). Thus, considering the effectiveness and simplicity of machine learning techniques, our study demonstrated the potential for ET downscaling. Understanding water quality is crucial for environmental management and policy formulation. However, existing methods for assessing water quality are often unable to fully integrate with multi-source remote sensing data. This study introduces a method that employs a stacking algorithm within the Google Earth Engine (GEE) for classifying water quality grades in the Songhua River Basin (SHRB). By leveraging the strengths of multiple machine learning models, the Stacked Generalization (SG) model achieved an accuracy of 91.67%, significantly enhancing classification performance compared to traditional approaches. Additionally, the analysis revealed substantial correlations between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and precipitation with water quality grades. These findings underscore the efficacy of this method for effective water quality monitoring and its implications for understanding the influence of natural factors on water pollution.

The Nakdong River is a crucial water resource in South Korea, supplying water for various purposes such as potable water, irrigation, and recreation. However, the river is vulnerable to algal blooms due to the inflow of pollutants from multiple points and non-point sources. Monitoring chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations, a proxy for algal biomass is essential for assessing the trophic status of the river and managing its ecological health. This study aimed to improve the accuracy and reliability of Chl-a estimation in the Nakdong River using machine learning models (MLMs) and simultaneous use of multiple remotely sensed datasets. This study compared the performances of four MLMs: multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and eXetreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) using three different input datasets: (1) two remotely sensed datasets (Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8), (2) standalone Sentinel-2, and (3) standalone Landsat-8. The results showed that the MLP model with multiple remotely sensed datasets outperformed other MLMs with 0.43 - 0.86 greater in R 2 and 0.36 - 5.88 lower in RMSE. The MLP model demonstrated the highest performance across the range of Chl-a concentrations and predicted peaks above 20 mg/m 3 relatively well compared to other models. This was likely due to the capacity of MLP to handle imbalanced datasets. The predictive map of the spatial distribution of Chl-a generated by MLP well captured the areas with high and low Chl-a concentrations. This study pointed out the impacts of imbalanced Chl-a concentration observations (dominated by low Chl-a concentrations) on the performance of MLMs. The data imbalance likely led to MLMs poorly trained for high Chl-a values, producing low prediction accuracy. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the value of multiple remotely sensed datasets in enhancing the accuracy and reliability of Chl-a estimation, mainly when using the MLP model. Critical applications of satellite data products include monitoring vegetation dynamics and assessing vegetation health conditions. Some indicators like normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) are used to assess the status of vegetation growth and health. But one of the major problems with passive remote sensing satellite data products is cloud and shadow cover that leads to data gaps in the images. The present study proposes temporal aggregation of images over a short time span and developing short span harmonic analysis of time series (SS-HANTS) and pixel-wise multiple linear regression (PMLR) algorithms for retrieving cloud contaminated NDVI and LST information from Landsat-8 (L8) data products, respectively. The developed algorithms were applied in the northeastern part of Thailand to recover the missing NDVI and LST values from time series L8 images acquired in 2018. The predicted NDVI and LST values at artificially clouded locations were compared with the corresponding clear pixel values. Additionally, the model predicted LST and NDVI values were also compared with MODIS LST and NDVI datasets. The calculated root mean square (RMSE) values were ranging from 0.03 to 0.11 and 1.50 to 2.98 °C for NDVI and LST variables, respectively. The validation statistics show that these models can be satisfactorily applied to retrieve NDVI and LST values from cloud-contaminated pixels of L8 images. Furthermore, a vegetation health index (VHI) computed from cloud retrieved continuous NDVI and LST images at province level shows that most of the western provinces have healthy vegetation condition than other provinces in the northeast of Thailand., (© 2022. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are an issue of concern for water management worldwide. As such, effective monitoring strategies of HAB spatio-temporal variability in waterbodies are needed. Remote sensing has become an increasingly important tool for HAB detection and monitoring in large lakes. However, accurate HAB detection in small-medium waterbodies via satellite data remains a challenge. Current barriers include the waterbody size, the limited freely available high resolution satellite data, and the lack of field calibration data. To test the applicability of remote sensing for detecting HABs in small-medium waterbodies, three satellites (Planetscope, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8) were used to understand how spatial resolution, the availability of spectral bands, and the waterbody size itself effect HAB detection skill. Different algorithms and a non-parametric method, Self-Organizing Map (SOM), were tested. Curvature Around Red and NIR minus Red had the best HAB detection skill of the 20 existing algorithms that were tested. Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 were the best satellites for HAB detection in small to medium waterbodies. The most critical attribute for detecting HABs were the available satellite bands, which determine the detection algorithms that can be used. Importantly, algorithm performance was mostly unrelated to waterbody size. However, there remain some barriers in utilizing satellite data for HAB detection, including algae dynamics, macrophyte cover within the waterbody, weather effects, and the correction models for satellite data. Moreover, it is important to consider the match time between satellite overpass and sampling activities for calibration. In settlements, special attention is given to the study of anthropogenic aerosol pollution, and insufficient attention is given to natural sources of pollution, especially from active zones of the Earth. The aim of this work was to study atmospheric pollution (the Srednyaya Akhtuba village (Volgograd region, Russia)) using indicators (pH; EC, μS/cm) of aerosol suspensions (washing off aerosols from the leaves of Prunus armeniaca L.) during 2018-2020 and the forecast of pollution sources. Research hypothesis: low mineralization and close to neutral acidity of aerosol suspensions indicate the purity of the atmospheric air, and there is no load of anthropogenic and natural sources. Acid mineralized aerosols were found in the residential area of Srednyaya Akhtuba, which indicates air pollution during 2018-2020. The correlation relationship between pH and EC in μS/cm was investigated using standard least squares regression. The results obtained indicate statistically significant differences between the experimental territory and the (relatively) clean location from 2018 to 2020 in terms of the studied indicators, as well as the revealed correlation between them in Srednyaya Akhtuba village, which indicates the revealed patterns and the influence of the system factor. Remote sensing dynamic monitoring methods often benefit from a dense time series of observations. To enhance these time series, it is sometimes necessary to integrate data from multiple satellite systems. In particular, the Landsat and Sentinel series provide a rich source of data for Earth observations. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists proposed a method that creates global fixed per-band transformation coefficients to reduce the reflectance difference between Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 for the harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) surface reflectance product. However, the coefficient has yet to be further validated in the target study area and the coefficient can only be used for Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2, and is not useful for other sensors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of integrating surface reflectance data from Landsat-7, Landsat-8, and Sentinel-2. Some differences in the surface reflectance of the sensor pairs were identified, based upon which a cross-sensor conversion model was proposed, i.e., a suitable adjustment equation was fitted using an ordinary least squares (OLS) linear regression method to convert the Sentinel-2 reflectance values closer to the Landsat-7 or Landsat-8 values. The results show that the model adjusted the Sentinel-2 surface reflectance to match Landsat-7 or Landsat-8. The maximum MRE of the adjusted sensor for surface reflectance was reduced from 17.96 to 12.15%. Differences in reflectance produce corresponding differences in estimates of biophysical quantities, such as NDVI, with MRE as high as 18.33%. However, adjusting the Sentinel-2 sensor was able to reduce this part of the discrepancy to about 12.56%. This work evaluates the performance of three machine learning (ML) techniques, namely logistic regression (LGR), linear regression (LR), and support vector machines (SVM), and two multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques, namely analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), for mapping landslide susceptibility in the Chitral district, northern Pakistan. Moreover, we create landslide inventory maps from LANDSAT-8 satellite images through the change vector analysis (CVA) change detection method. The change detection yields more than 500 landslide spots. After some manual post-processing correction, the landslide inventory spots are randomly split into two sets with a 70/30 ratio for training and validating the performance of the ML techniques. Sixteen topographical, hydrological, and geological landslide-related factors of the study area are prepared as GIS layers. They are used to produce landslide susceptibility maps (LSMs) with weighted overlay techniques using different weights of landslide-related factors. The accuracy assessment shows that the ML techniques outperform the MCDM methods, while SVM yields the highest accuracy of 88% for the resulting LSM.

Lake Salda's extreme environment is geologically similar to Jezero Crater paleolake on Mars due to the formation of stromatolites and its extremely alkaline and cold water. It is critical to accurately determine the shoreline in the littoral zone where stromatolite formation occurs, in alkaline clean lakes like Salda, which contain traces of life on Mars, and in monitoring the change that occurs with climate and anthropogenic effect. The performance of global automatic thresholding algorithms on shoreline determination from NDWI and mNDWI water indices is compared in this study using Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 images atmospherically corrected by different algorithms. Satellite images data acquired on August 12, 2020 for Sentinel-2 and August 11, 2020 for Landsat-8 on Lake Salda were used to determining the shoreline. The shoreline data measured in situ concurrently with the Sentinel-2 satellite acquisition was used as reference data. In the accuracy analysis, ground control points created inside and outside the lake at a distance of 1 pixel and 0.5 pixel to the reference shoreline for each satellite image were used. The performance of the optimal threshold values determined by each thresholding algorithm in the water index images was assessed using Kappa coefficient, Overall Accuracy (OA), %OA of Inside (%OA inside ) and %OA of Outside (%OA outside ) statistics metrics. The optimal threshold values vary depending on the image and the atmospheric correction algorithm applied to the image. The NDWI index produces more accurate results in both Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 satellite images. While atmospheric correction algorithms do not affect the results in Landsat-8 images, the Sen2Cor algorithm outperforms iCOR in Sentinel-2 images. For thresholding algorithms to be used in different water index and satellite images, Intermode, Isodata, IJ_Isodata, Minimum and Otsu algorithms in Landsat-8_LaSRC_NDWI and Landsat-8_iCOR_NDWI images, and Intermode, Minimum and Huang algorithms in Sentinel-2_Sen2Cor_NDWI images produce the best results. Because the Minimum algorithm causes significant gaps in the lake surface, the Huang and Intermode algorithms should be used for Sentinel-2_Sen2Cor_NDWI images. One of the main sources of greenhouse gases is forest fire, with carbon dioxide as its main constituent. With increasing global surface temperatures, the probability of forest fire events also increases. A method that enables rapid quantification of emissions is even more necessary to estimate the environmental impact. This study introduces the application of the Google Earth Engine platform to monitor burned areas in forest fire events in Mount Arjuno, Indonesia, during the 2016-2019 period, using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellite imageries. The events particularly affected grassland and tropical forest areas, as well as a fraction of agricultural areas, with a total estimated emission of 2.5 × 10 3 tCO 2 /km 2 burned area. In the trend of global warming and urbanization, frequent extreme weather has a severe impact on the lives of citizens. Land Surface Temperature (LST) is an essential climate variable and a vital parameter for land surface processes at local and global scales. Retrieving LST from global, regional, and city-scale thermal infrared remote sensing data has unparalleled advantages and is one of the most common methods used to study urban heat island effects. Different algorithms have been developed for retrieving LST using satellite imagery, such as the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE), Mono-Window Algorithm (MWA), Split-Window Algorithm (SWA), and Single-Channel Algorithm (SCA). A case study was performed in Shanghai to evaluate these existing algorithms in the retrieval of LST from Landsat-8 images. To evaluate the estimated LST accurately, measured data from meteorological stations and the MOD11A2 product were used for validation. The results showed that the four algorithms could achieve good results in retrieving LST, and the LST retrieval results were generally consistent within a spatial scale. SWA is more suitable for retrieving LST in Shanghai during the summer, a season when the temperature and the humidity are both very high in Shanghai. Highest retrieval accuracy could be seen in cultivated land, vegetation, wetland, and water body. SWA was more sensitive to the error caused by land surface emissivity (LSE). In low temperature and a dry winter, RTE, SWA, and SCA are relatively more reliable. Both RTE and SCA were sensitive to the error caused by atmospheric water vapor content. These results can provide a reasonable reference for the selection of LST retrieval algorithms for different periods in Shanghai.

Though current remote sensing technologies, especially synthetic aperture radars (SARs), exhibit huge potential for soil moisture content (SMC) retrievals, such technologies also present several performance disadvantages. This study explored the merits of proposing a novel data fusion methodology (partly decision level and partly feature level) for SMC estimation. Initially, individual estimations were derived from three distinct methods: the inversion of an Empirically Adapted Integral Equation Model (EA-IEM) applied to SAR data, the Perpendicular Drought Index (PDI), and the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) determined from Landsat-8 data. Subsequently, three feature level fusions were performed to produce three different novel salient feature combinations where said features were extracted from each of the previously mentioned methods to be the input of an artificial neural network (ANN). The latter underwent a modification of its performance function, more specifically from absolute error to root mean square error (RMSE). Eventually, all SMC estimations, including the feature level fusion estimation, were fused at the decision level through a novel weight-based estimation. The performance of the proposed system was analysed and validated by measurements collected from three study areas, an agricultural field in Blackwell farms, Guildford, United Kingdom, and two different agricultural fields in Sidi Rached, Tipasa, Algeria. Those measurements contained SMC levels and surface roughness profiles. The proposed SMC estimation system yielded stronger correlations and lower RMSE values than any of the considered SMC estimation methods in the order of 0.38%, 1.4%, and 1.09% for the Blackwell farms, Sidi Rached 1, and Sidi Rached 2 datasets, respectively.

Land surface temperature (LST) is a critical state variable of land surface energy equilibrium and a key indicator of environmental change such as climate change, urban heat island, and freezing-thawing hazard. The high spatial and temporal resolution datasets are urgently needed for a variety of environmental change studies, especially in remote areas with few LST observation stations. MODIS and Landsat satellites have complementary characteristics in terms of spatial and temporal resolution for LST retrieval. To make full use of their respective advantages, this paper developed a pixel-based multi-spatial resolution adaptive fusion modeling framework (called pMSRAFM). As an instance of this framework, the data fusion model for joint retrieval of LST from Landsat-8 and MODIS data was implemented to generate the synthetic LST with Landsat-like spatial resolution and MODIS temporal information. The performance of pMSRAFM was tested and validated in the Heihe River Basin located in China. The results of six experiments showed that the fused LST was high similarity to the direct Landsat-derived LST with structural similarity index ( SSIM ) of 0.83 and the index of agreement ( d ) of 0.84. The range of SSIM was 0.65-0.88, the root mean square error (RMSE) yielded a range of 1.6-3.4 °C, and the averaged bias was 0.6 °C. Furthermore, the temporal information of MODIS LST was retained and optimized in the synthetic LST. The RMSE ranged from 0.7 °C to 1.5 °C with an average value of 1.1 °C. When compared with in situ LST observations, the mean absolute error and bias were reduced after fusion with the mean absolute bias of 1.3 °C. The validation results that fused LST possesses the spatial pattern of Landsat-derived LSTs and inherits most of the temporal properties of MODIS LSTs at the same time, so it can provide more accurate and credible information. Consequently, pMSRAFM can be served as a promising and practical fusion framework to prepare a high-quality LST spatiotemporal dataset for various applications in environment studies.

We describe a reference spatial database and four land use maps of Antananarivo city produced over 2017 reference year using a methodology combining machine learning and object based image analysis (OBIA). These maps are produced by processing satellite images using the Moringa land cover processing chain developed in our laboratory. We use a single very high spatial resolution (VHSR) Pleiades image, a time series of Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 images, a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and the aforementioned reference database. According to the Moringa workflow, the Pleiades image is used to generate a suitable object layer at VHSR using a segmentation algorithm. Each object is then classified using variables from the time series and information from the DTM. The reference database used to train the supervised classification algorithm is here described, as well as the 4 land cover maps produced at four different hierarchically nested nomenclature levels. For a number of classes going from 2 to 20, overall accuracies range from 94% to 74%. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in aquatic environments is an important cycled pool of organic matter on the Earth. Satellite remote sensing provides a useful tool to determine spatiotemporal distribution of water quality parameters. Previous DOC remote sensing studies in inland water suffered from either low spatial resolution or low temporal frequency. In this study, we evaluated the potential of jointly using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 with high spatial resolution to estimate DOC concentrations in Saginaw River plume regions of Lake Huron. Firstly, CDOM (colored dissolved organic matter) was estimated from images using the known models and then DOC can be derived in terms of the good correlations between DOC and CDOM. The results show that Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 had acceptable accuracy and good consistency in DOC estimation so that jointly using them can improve the observation frequency. In different seasons from 2013 to 2018, DOC was typically higher in spring and autumn but lower in summer. Monthly spatiotemporal variations of DOC in 2018 were also observed. The image-derived DOC spatiotemporal variations show that DOC was covaried with Saginaw River discharge (r = 0.82) and also weakly and negatively correlated with water temperature (r = -0.6). The atmospheric correction of satellite images based on radiative transfer calculations is a prerequisite for many remote sensing applications. The software package ATCOR, developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is a versatile atmospheric correction software, capable of processing data acquired by many different optical satellite sensors. Based on this well established algorithm, a new Python-based atmospheric correction software has been developed to generate L2A products of Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, and of new space-based hyperspectral sensors such as DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) and EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program). This paper outlines the underlying algorithms of PACO, and presents the validation results by comparing L2A products generated from Sentinel-2 L1C images with in situ (AERONET and RadCalNet) data within VNIR-SWIR spectral wavelengths range.

We here present a reference database and three land use maps produced in 2017 over the Reunion island using a machine learning based methodology. These maps are the result of a satellite image analysis performed using the Moringa land cover processing chain developed in our laboratory. The input dataset for map production consists of a single very high spatial resolution Pleiades images, a time series of Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 images, a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and the aforementioned reference database. The Moringa chain adopts an object based approach: the Pleiades image provides spatial accuracy with the delineation of land samples via a segmentation process, the time series provides information on landscape and vegetation dynamics, the DTM provides information on topography and the reference database provides annotated samples (6256 polygons) for the supervised classification process and the validation of the results. The three land use maps follow a hierarchical nomenclature ranging from 4 classes for the least detailed level to 34 classes for the most detailed one. The validation of these maps shows a good quality of the results with overall accuracy rates ranging from 86% to 97%. Crop-type identification is very important in agricultural regions. Most researchers in this area have focused on exploring the ability of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) sensors to identify crops. This paper uses multi-source (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Landsat-8) and multi-temporal data to identify crop types. The change detection method was used to analyze spectral and indices information in time series. Significant differences in crop growth status during the growing season were found. Then, three obviously differentiated time features were extracted. Three advanced machine learning algorithms (Support Vector Machine, Artificial Neural Network, and Random Forest, RF) were used to identify the crop types. The results showed that the detection of (Vertical-vertical) VV, (Vertical-horizontal) VH, and Cross Ratio (CR) changes was effective for identifying land cover. Moreover, the red-edge changes were obviously different according to crop growth periods. Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 showed different normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) changes also. By using single remote sensing data to classify crops, Sentinel-2 produced the highest overall accuracy (0.91) and Kappa coefficient (0.89). The combination of Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Landsat-8 data provided the best overall accuracy (0.93) and Kappa coefficient (0.91). The RF method had the best performance in terms of identity classification. In addition, the indices feature dominated the classification results. The combination of phenological period information with multi-source remote sensing data can be used to explore a crop area and its status in the growing season. The results of crop classification can be used to analyze the density and distribution of crops. This study can also allow to determine crop growth status, improve crop yield estimation accuracy, and provide a basis for crop management.

There are several important issues in quantitative remote sensing and product authenticity testing, including how well do the ground measurement points represent the remote sensing pixels, how to obtain the relative truth value of pixels, and how much spatial resolution can truly reflect fore-st leaf area index (LAI). In this study, the measured space scope of two plant canopy analyzers [LAI-2200 and tracing radiation and architecture of canopies (TRAC)] were calculated, which were combined with remote sensing images with three different spatial resolutions: GF-2 with 4.1 m spatial resolution, the Sentinel-2 with 10 m spatial resolution, and Landsat-8 OLI with 30 m spatial resolution, to get the relative true value of pixel at each scale. Under the condition of keeping the real observed area consistent with that obtained by remote sensing, the effects of different spatial resolution images for estimating forest LAI were compared and analyzed based on the unary exponential and multiple regression statistical models. Moreover, the optimal statistical models of the three images were tested on 30 m and 100 m scales and the spatial representation of dataset were evaluated, to find the most suitable scale for the description of forest LAI in the study area. The results showed that high resolution did not necessarily fully reflect LAI of forests. The statistical model based on three kinds of resolution images could well estimate forest LAI. Among the three models, the model based on the Sentinel-2 image had the highest accuracy, and the one based on the GF-2 images had the lowest. The test results at 30 and 100 m scales indicated that the forest LAI was overestimated by the GF-2 inversion model, and underestimated by the Landsat-8 inversion model. The statistical model based on Sentinel-2 could well estimated forest LAI in the study area.

Microplastic research has mainly concentrated on open seas, while riverine plumes remain largely unexplored despite their hypothesized importance as a microplastic source to coastal waters. This work aimed to model coastal accumulation of microplastic particles (1-5 mm) emitted by the Po River over 1.5 years. We posit that river-induced microplastic accumulation on adjacent coasts can be predicted using (1) hydrodynamic-based and (2) remote sensing-based modelling. Model accumulation maps were validated against sampling at nine beaches, with sediment microplastic concentrations up to 78 particles/kg (dry weight). Hydrodynamic modelling revealed that discharged particle amount is only semi-coupled to beaching rates, which are strongly mouth dependent and occur within the first ten days. Remote sensing modelling was found to better capture river mouth relative strength, and accumulation patterns were found consistent with hydrodynamic modelling. Land cover classification and investigation of temporal changes are considered to be common applications of remote sensing. Water/non-water region estimation is one of the most fundamental classification tasks, analyzing the occurrence of water on the Earth's surface. However, common remote sensing practices such as thresholding, spectral analysis, and statistical approaches are not sufficient to produce a globally adaptable water classification. The aim of this study is to develop a formula with automatically derived tuning parameters using perceptron neural networks for water/non-water region estimation, which we call the Perceptron-Derived Water Formula (PDWF), using Landsat-8 images. Water/non-water region estimates derived from PDWF were compared with three different approaches-Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), Automatic Water Extraction Index (AWEI), and Deep Convolutional Neural Network-using various case studies. Our proposed method outperforms all three approaches, showing a significant improvement in water/non-water region estimation. PDWF performance is consistently better even in cases of challenging conditions such as low reflectance due to hill shadows, building-shadows, and dark soils. Moreover, our study implemented a sunglint correction to adapt water/non-water region estimation over sunglint-affected pixels.

Alases, which are thermokarst depressions that are occupied by grasslands and lakes, are an important element of the Central Yakutian periglacial landscape. In recent decades, climatic changes in Central Yakutia have resulted in important changes in environmental conditions. We use different remote-sensing instruments (Landsat 8, TerraSAR-X, ENVISAT-RA2, and Jason-2) alongside in situ observations to investigate 1) the spatial distribution and water regime of alas lakes and their relationships with climatic and geomorphologic factors, 2) the relationship of the alas' grassland productivity with the water regime and 3) the potential of alas grasslands for local agriculture. During the 2002-2010 period, the lake water level rose by 1.3m on average, resulting in lake expansion throughout the region. Since 2011, the lake area decreased and the water level declined by 70cm on the middle terraces (low ground-ice content), while the wetting trend continued until 2016 at higher elevations. Small thermokarst lakes (<0.025km 2 ), which indicate regions of young thermokarst, comprise up to 11% of the total lake area and experience high (30%) seasonal variations. In situ observations of the grassland dynamics show their synchronous cyclic variability with the lake extent and a general increasing trend for their productivity since 1985. Around 50% of these dynamics can be explained by the amount of pre-winter precipitation with a delay of two years. We explain this delay through the buffering effect of watershed soils. The cyclic variability of alas hydro-ecosystems strongly affects the local agriculture, which is based on horse and cattle breeding. We estimate that these alas grasslands can provide enough forage supply for local communities. However, the real alas yield is several times less than the theoretical value because of grassland degradation that is caused by recent thermokarst and waterlogging in the most productive phytocenosis., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. The launch of the Landsat 8 in February 2013 extended the life of the Landsat program to over 40 years, increasing the value of using Landsat to monitor long-term changes in the water quality of small lakes and reservoirs, particularly in poorly monitored freshwater systems. Landsat-based water quality hindcasting often incorporate several Landsat sensors in an effort to increase the temporal range of observations; yet the transferability of water quality algorithms across sensors remains poorly examined. In this study, several empirical algorithms were developed to quantify chlorophyll-a, total suspended matter (TSM), and Secchi disk depth (SDD) from surface reflectance measured by Landsat 7 ETM+ and Landsat 8 OLI sensors. Sensor-specific multiple linear regression models were developed by correlating in situ water quality measurements collected from a semi-arid eutrophic reservoir with band ratios from Landsat ETM+ and OLI sensors, along with ancillary data (water temperature and seasonality) representing ecological patterns in algae growth. Overall, ETM+-based models outperformed (adjusted R 2 chlorophyll-a = 0.70, TSM = 0.81, SDD = 0.81) their OLI counterparts (adjusted R 2 chlorophyll-a = 0.50, TSM = 0.58, SDD = 0.63). Inter-sensor differences were most apparent for algorithms utilizing the Blue spectral band. The inclusion of water temperature and seasonality improved the power of TSM and SDD models.

The Atmospheric Correction Inter-comparison eXercise (ACIX) is an international initiative with the aim to analyse the Surface Reflectance (SR) products of various state-of-the-art atmospheric correction (AC) processors. The Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) and Water Vapour (WV) are also examined in ACIX as additional outputs of an AC processing. In this paper, the general ACIX framework is discussed; special mention is made of the motivation to initiate this challenge, the inter-comparison protocol and the principal results. ACIX is free and open and every developer was welcome to participate. Eventually, 12 participants applied their approaches to various Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 image datasets acquired over sites around the world. The current results diverge depending on the sensors, products and sites, indicating their strengths and weaknesses. Indeed, this first implementation of processor inter-comparison was proven to be a good lesson for the developers to learn the advantages and limitations of their approaches. Various algorithm improvements are expected, if not already implemented, and the enhanced performances are yet to be investigated in future ACIX experiments.

In this study, we demonstrated that the Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor is a powerful tool that can provide periodic and system-wide information on the condition of drinking water reservoirs. The OLI is a multispectral radiometer (30 m spatial resolution) that allows ecosystem observations at spatial and temporal scales that allow the environmental community and water managers another means to monitor changes in water quality not feasible with field-based monitoring. Using the provisional Land Surface Reflectance (LSR) product and field-collected chlorophyll- a (chl- a ) concentrations from drinking water monitoring programs in North Carolina and Rhode Island, we compared five established approaches for estimating chl- a concentrations using spectral data. We found that using the 3 band reflectance approach with a combination of OLI spectral bands 1, 3, and 5, produced the most promising results for accurately estimating chl- a concentrations in lakes ( R 2 value of 0.66; RMSE value of 8.9 μg l -1 ). Using this model, we forecast the spatial and temporal variability of chl- a for Jordan Lake, a recreational and drinking water source in piedmont North Carolina and several small ponds that supply drinking water in southeastern Rhode Island.

This paper focuses on evaluating the ability and contribution of using backscatter intensity, texture, coherence, and color features extracted from Sentinel-1A data for urban land cover classification and comparing different multi-sensor land cover mapping methods to improve classification accuracy. Both Landsat-8 OLI and Hyperion images were also acquired, in combination with Sentinel-1A data, to explore the potential of different multi-sensor urban land cover mapping methods to improve classification accuracy. The classification was performed using a random forest (RF) method. The results showed that the optimal window size of the combination of all texture features was 9 × 9, and the optimal window size was different for each individual texture feature. For the four different feature types, the texture features contributed the most to the classification, followed by the coherence and backscatter intensity features; and the color features had the least impact on the urban land cover classification. Satisfactory classification results can be obtained using only the combination of texture and coherence features, with an overall accuracy up to 91.55% and a kappa coefficient up to 0.8935, respectively. Among all combinations of Sentinel-1A-derived features, the combination of the four features had the best classification result. Multi-sensor urban land cover mapping obtained higher classification accuracy. The combination of Sentinel-1A and Hyperion data achieved higher classification accuracy compared to the combination of Sentinel-1A and Landsat-8 OLI images, with an overall accuracy of up to 99.12% and a kappa coefficient up to 0.9889. Areas and spatial distribution information of paddy rice are important for managing food security, water use, and climate change. However, there are many difficulties in mapping paddy rice, especially mapping multi-season paddy rice in rainy regions, including differences in phenology, the influence of weather, and farmland fragmentation. To resolve these problems, a novel multi-season paddy rice mapping approach based on Sentinel-1A and Landsat-8 data is proposed. First, Sentinel-1A data were enhanced based on the fact that the backscattering coefficient of paddy rice varies according to its growth stage. Second, cropland information was enhanced based on the fact that the NDVI of cropland in winter is lower than that in the growing season. Then, paddy rice and cropland areas were extracted using a K-Means unsupervised classifier with enhanced images. Third, to further improve the paddy rice classification accuracy, cropland information was utilized to optimize distribution of paddy rice by the fact that paddy rice must be planted in cropland. Classification accuracy was validated based on ground-data from 25 field survey quadrats measuring 600 m × 600 m. The results show that: multi-season paddy rice planting areas effectively was extracted by the method and adjusted early rice area of 1630.84 km², adjusted middle rice area of 556.21 km², and adjusted late rice area of 3138.37 km². Optimizing the classification accuracy of a mangrove forest is of utmost importance for conservation practitioners. Mangrove forest mapping using satellite-based remote sensing techniques is by far the most common method of classification currently used given the logistical difficulties of field endeavors in these forested wetlands. However, there is now an abundance of options from which to choose in regards to satellite sensors, which has led to substantially different estimations of mangrove forest location and extent with particular concern for degraded systems. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of mangrove forest classification using different remotely sensed data sources (i.e., Landsat-8, SPOT-5, Sentinel-2, and WorldView-2) for a system located along the Pacific coast of Mexico. Specifically, we examined a stressed semiarid mangrove forest which offers a variety of conditions such as dead areas, degraded stands, healthy mangroves, and very dense mangrove island formations. The results indicated that Landsat-8 (30 m per pixel) had  the lowest overall accuracy at 64% and that WorldView-2 (1.6 m per pixel) had the highest at 93%. Moreover, the SPOT-5 and the Sentinel-2 classifications (10 m per pixel) were very similar having accuracies of 75 and 78%, respectively. In comparison to WorldView-2, the other sensors overestimated the extent of Laguncularia racemosa and underestimated the extent of Rhizophora mangle. When considering such type of sensors, the higher spatial resolution can be particularly important in mapping small mangrove islands that often occur in degraded mangrove systems.

The northeastern region of Bangladesh often experiences flash flooding during the pre-harvesting period of the boro rice crop, which is the major cereal crop in the country. In this study, our objective was to delineate the impact of the 2017 flash flood (that initiated on 27 March 2017) on boro rice using multi-temporal Landsat-8 OLI and MODIS data. Initially, we opted to use Landsat-8 OLI data for mapping the damages; however, during and after the flooding event the acquisition of cloud free images were challenging. Thus, we used this data to map the cultivated boro rice acreage considering the planting to mature stages of the crop. Also, in order to map the extent of the damaged boro area, we utilized MODIS data as their 16-day composites provided cloud free information. Our results indicated that both the cultivated and damaged boro area estimates based on satellite data had strong relationships while compared to the ground-based estimates (i.e., r ² values approximately 0.92 for both cases, and RMSE of 18,374 and 9380 ha for cultivated and damaged areas, respectively). Winter wheat is the second largest food crop in China. It is important to obtain reliable winter wheat acreage to guarantee the food security for the most populous country in the world. This paper focuses on assessing the feasibility of in-season winter wheat mapping and investigating potential classification improvement by using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images, optical images, and the integration of both types of data in urban agricultural regions with complex planting structures in Southern China. Both SAR (Sentinel-1A) and optical (Landsat-8) data were acquired, and classification using different combinations of Sentinel-1A-derived information and optical images was performed using a support vector machine (SVM) and a random forest (RF) method. The interference coherence and texture images were obtained and used to assess the effect of adding them to the backscatter intensity images on the classification accuracy. The results showed that the use of four Sentinel-1A images acquired before the jointing period of winter wheat can provide satisfactory winter wheat classification accuracy, with an F1 measure of 87.89%. The combination of SAR and optical images for winter wheat mapping achieved the best F1 measure-up to 98.06%. The SVM was superior to RF in terms of the overall accuracy and the kappa coefficient, and was faster than RF, while the RF classifier was slightly better than SVM in terms of the F1 measure. This study investigates misregistration issues between Landsat-8/OLI and Sentinel-2A/MSI at 30 m resolution, and between multi-temporal Sentinel-2A images at 10 m resolution using a phase correlation approach and multiple transformation functions. Co-registration of 45 Landsat-8 to Sentinel-2A pairs and 37 Sentinel-2A to Sentinel-2A pairs were analyzed. Phase correlation proved to be a robust approach that allowed us to identify hundreds and thousands of control points on images acquired more than 100 days apart. Overall, misregistration of up to 1.6 pixels at 30 m resolution between Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A images, and 1.2 pixels and 2.8 pixels at 10 m resolution between multi-temporal Sentinel-2A images from the same and different orbits, respectively, were observed. The non-linear Random Forest regression used for constructing the mapping function showed best results in terms of root mean square error (RMSE), yielding an average RMSE error of 0.07±0.02 pixels at 30 m resolution, and 0.09±0.05 and 0.15±0.06 pixels at 10 m resolution for the same and adjacent Sentinel-2A orbits, respectively, for multiple tiles and multiple conditions. A simpler 1 st order polynomial function (affine transformation) yielded RMSE of 0.08±0.02 pixels at 30 m resolution and 0.12±0.06 (same Sentinel-2A orbits) and 0.20±0.09 (adjacent orbits) pixels at 10 m resolution.

Timely and accurate information on crop yield is critical to many applications within agriculture monitoring. Thanks to its coverage and temporal resolution, coarse spatial resolution satellite imagery has always been a source of valuable information for yield forecasting and assessment at national and regional scales. With availability of free images acquired by Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 remote sensing satellites, it becomes possible to enable temporal resolution of an image every 3-5 days, and therefore, to develop next generation agriculture products at higher spatial resolution (30 m). This paper explores the combined use of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A for winter crop mapping and winter wheat assessment at regional scale. For the former, we adapt a previously developed approach for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) at 250 m resolution that allows automatic mapping of winter crops taking into account knowledge on crop calendar and without ground truth data. For the latter, we use a generalized winter wheat yield model that is based on NDVI-peak estimation and MODIS data, and further downscaled to be applicable at 30 m resolution. We show that integration of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A has a positive impact both for winter crop mapping and winter wheat yield assessment. In particular, the error of winter wheat yield estimates can be reduced up to 1.8 times comparing to the single satellite usage.
