Plastic pollution has become a major environmental concern globally, and novel and eco-friendly approaches like bioremediation are essential to mitigate the impact. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and expanded polystyrene (EPS) are three of the most frequently used plastic types. This study examined biodegradation of these using Zophobas atratus larvae, followed by isolation and whole genome sequencing of gut bacteria collected from larvae frass. Over 36 days, 24.04 % LDPE, 20.01 % EPS, and 15.12 % LLDPE were consumed on average by the larvae, with survival rates of 85 %, 90 %, and 87 %, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of fresh plastic types, consumed plastics, and larvae frass showed proof of plastic oxidation in the gut. Frass bacteria were isolated and cultured in minimal salt media supplemented with plastics as the sole carbon source. Two isolates of bacteria were sampled from these cultures, designated PDB-1 and PDB-2. PDB-1 could survive on LDPE and LLDPE as carbon sources, whereas PDB-2 could survive on EPS. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) provided proof of degradation in both cases. Both isolates were identified as strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, followed by sequencing, assembly, and annotation of their genomes. LDPE- and LLDPE-degrading enzymes e.g., P450 monooxygenase, alkane monooxygenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, etc. were identified in PDB-1. Similarly, phenylacetaldehyde dehydrogenase and other enzymes involved in EPS degradation were identified in PDB-2. Genes of both isolates were compared with genomes of known plastic-degrading P. aeruginosa strains. Virulence factors, antibiotic-resistance genes, and rhamnolipid biosurfactant biosynthesis genes were also identified in both isolates. This study indicated Zophobas atratus larvae as potential LDPE, LLDPE, and EPS biodegradation agent. Additionally, the isolated strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa provide a more direct and eco-friendly solution for plastic degradation. Maleic anhydride-modified homopolymerized polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and maleic anhydride-modified polyolefin elastomer (POE-g-MAH) were used as bulking agents to improve the poor processing and mechanical properties of highly filled composites due to high filler content. In this study, a series of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)/magnesium hydroxide (MH) composites were prepared by the melt blending method, and the effects of the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and rheological behavior of the composites were investigated. The addition of the compatibilizer decreased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of the composites, but they were all greater than 30.00%, which belonged to the flame retardant grade. Mechanical property tests showed that the addition of the compatibilizer significantly increased the tensile and impact strengths of the LLDPE/60MH (MH addition of 60 wt%) composites. Specifically, the addition of 5 wt% POE-g-MAH increased 154.07% and 415.47% compared to the LLDPE/60MH composites, respectively. The rotational rheology test showed that the addition of the compatibilizer could effectively improve the processing flow properties of the composites. However, due to the hydrocarbon structure of the compatibilizer, its flame retardant properties were adversely affected. This study provides a strategy that can improve the processing and mechanical properties of highly filled composites.

The poor processing and rheological properties of highly filled composites caused by the high loading of fillers can be improved with the use of maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene wax (PEWM) as compatibilizer and lubricant. In this study, two PEWMs with different molecular weights were synthesized by melt grafting, and their compositions and grafting degrees were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and acid-base titration. Subsequently, magnesium hydroxide (MH)/linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites with 60 wt% of MH were prepared using polyethylene wax (PEW) and PEWM, respectively. The equilibrium torque and melt flow index tests indicate that the processability and fluidity of MH/MAPP/LLDPE composites are significantly improved with the addition of PEWM. The addition of PEWM with a lower molecular weight leads to a substantial reduction in viscosity. The mechanical properties are also increased. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) test and cone calorimeter test (CCT) show that both PEW and PEWM have adverse effects on flame retardancy. This study provides a strategy to simultaneously improve the processability and mechanical properties of highly filled composites.

The need to reach carbon neutrality as soon as possible has made the use of recycled materials widespread. However, the treatment of artificial marble waste powder (AMWP) containing unsaturated polyester is a very challenging task. This task can be accomplished by converting AMWP into new plastic composites. Such conversion is a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to recycle industrial waste. However, the lack of mechanical strength in composites and the low filling content of AMWP have been major obstacles to its practical application in structural and technical buildings. In this study, a composite of AMWP/linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) filled with a 70 wt% AMWP content was fabricated using maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene as a compatibilizer (MAPE). The mechanical strength of the prepared composites is excellent (tensile strength ~18.45 MPa, impact strength ~51.6 kJ/m 2 ), making them appropriate as useful building materials. Additionally, laser particle size analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to examine the effects of maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene on the mechanical properties of AMWP/LLDPE composites and its mechanism of action. Overall, this study offers a practical method for the low-cost recycling of industrial waste into high-performance composites.

Composites made of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and β-cyclodextrin/d-limonene inclusion complex (CD-lim) were prepared by melt extrusion to develop a novel food packaging material. Scanning electron microscopy evidenced a fairly good dispersion of the filler within the polymeric matrix. Infrared spectroscopy coupled with thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the presence of CD-lim in the composites, proving that the applied technology of including the essential oil within β-CD cages allows for preventing a sizable loss of d-limonene despite a high temperature and shear applied upon extrusion processing. Moreover, the influence of the filler on the thermal properties of PE was assessed. It was found that the cyclodextrin-based inclusion complex significantly fastens the crystallization path of the polyethylene matrix with an improved crystallization rate of the PE/CD-lim composites compared to the neat polymer.

Pavement recycling is actively applied on asphalt roads due to ageing problems associated with bituminous binders when exposed to weathering and trafficking during their service life. Recycling of asphalt occurs through rejuvenator agents. This study utilised bio-oil produced from hydrothermal liquefaction of waste plastic films (linear low-density polyethylene - LLDPE) to rejuvenate laboratory-aged bitumen. Initially, the neat bitumen was aged through thermal ageing (Pressure Ageing Vessel - PAV) and then the aged binder was mixed with bio-oil from waste plastics at 5% and 8% bio-oil (BO) by weight of aged binder. All four binders including neat bitumen, aged bitumen, aged bitumen/BO-5% and aged bitumen/BO-8% were analysed for thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier Transform Infra-Red analysis, rheology in the linear viscoelastic region, multiple stress creep and recovery analysis, and linear amplitude sweep analysis. The ageing of neat binder resulted in hardening of the binder; however, the bio-oil rejuvenator softened the aged binder significantly. The thermo-chemical and rheological performance of aged binder was significantly improved after the addition of bio-oil. Using speckle patterns formed by an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser beam, we apply DIC (Digital Image Correlation) methods to estimate the deformation of LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) film. The laser beam was transmitted through the film specimen while a tensile machine applied a load to the specimen vertically. The transmitted laser light was projected on a screen, and the resultant image was captured by a digital camera. The captured image was analyzed both in space and frequency domains. For the space-domain analysis, the random speckle pattern was used to register the local displacement due to the deformation. For the frequency-domain analysis, the diffraction-like pattern, due to the horizontally-running, periodic groove-like structure of the film was used to characterize the overall deformation along vertical columns of analysis. It has been found that when the deformation is small and uniform, the conventional space domain analysis is applicable to the entire film specimen. However, once the deformation loses the spatial uniformity, the space-domain analysis falls short if applied to the entire specimen. The application of DIC to local (windowed) regions is still useful but time consuming. In the non-uniform situation, the frequency-domain analysis is found capable of revealing average deformation along each column of analysis.

In this study, we investigated the impact of ultrasound treatment on barrier properties of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and acrylic/poly(vinylidene chloride) polypropylene (PPAcPVDC)-coated pouches intended for food packaging before and after exposure to food simulants. Packaging pouches were filled with two food simulants, namely ethanol (10% (v/v)) and acetic acid (3% (w/v)), in order to simulate food−packaging interaction and possible compound migration from packaging materials. Samples were subjected to an ultrasound water bath treatment for 5 min, 15 min, and 30 min at 60 °C (±2 °C) and with an amplitude of 100% as an equivalent to the heat-treatment conditions combined with an ultrasound effect. Furthermore, the effect of temperature on the polymer barrier (water vapour and oxygen permeability) properties was tested at 20 °C, 40 °C, and 60 °C. Results showed that PPAcPVDC possessed better properties of water vapour permeability and oxygen permeability properties to LLDPE. Statistical analyses showed a significant (p < 0.001) impact of ultrasound treatment on the overall migration value, regardless of the food simulant used.

With shrinking size of electronic devices, increasing performance and accompanying heat dissipation, there is a need for efficient removal of this heat through packaging materials. Polymer materials are attractive packaging materials given their low density and electrical insulating properties, but they lack sufficient thermal conductivity that inhibits heat transfer rate. Hexagonal boron nitride (BN) possesses excellent thermal conductivity and is also electrically insulating, therefore BN-filled polymer composites were investigated in this study. Results showed successful continuous extrusion of BN-filled linear low-density polyethylene through micro-textured dies that is a scalable manufacturing process. Through-thickness thermal conductivity measurements established that 30 vol% BN content led to an over 500% increase in thermal conductivity over that of pure polymer. Textured film surface provided about a 50% increase in surface area when compared with non-textured films. This combination of increased surface area and enhanced thermal conductivity of BN-filled textured films indicates their potential application for improved convective thermal transport.

The compositions based on bimodal high-density polyethylene (HDPE, copolymer of ethylene with hexene-1) and in mixture with monomodal tercopolymer of ethylene with butene-1/hexene-1 (LLDPE, low-density polyethylene) have been studied. Phase equilibrium, thermodynamic parameters of interdiffusion in a wide range of temperatures and ratios of co-components were identified by refractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, optical laser interferometry, X-ray phase analysis. The phase state diagrams of the HDPE-LLDPE systems were constructed. It has been established that they belong to the class of state diagrams of "solid crystal solutions with unrestricted mixing of components". The paired parameters of the components interaction and their temperature dependences were calculated. Thermodynamic compatibility of α-olefins in the region of melts and crystallization of one of the components has been shown. The kinetics of formation of interphase boundaries during crystallization of α-olefins has been analyzed. The morphology of crystallized gradient diffusion zones has been analyzed by optical polarization microscopy. The sizes of spherulites in different areas of concentration profiles and values of interdiffusion coefficients were determined.

Consumption of contaminated water may lead to dangerous and even fatal water-borne diseases. Disinfection of drinking water is the most effective solution for this problem. The most common water treatment methods are based on the use of toxic disinfectants. Composites of polymers with nanosized metals and their oxides may become a good alternative to the existing methods. Expanding the scope of our previous publication, copper, cuprous, and copper oxide nanoparticles were immobilized onto linear low-density polyethylene by a simple thermal adhesion method. The antibacterial efficiency of the immobilized nanoparticles was tested against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus in batch experiments and for the first time the efficiency of these composites is reported for continuous flow regime. Immobilized copper and cuprous oxide nanoparticles demonstrated a high ability to eradicate bacteria after 30 min. These composites showed no or very limited leaching of copper ions into the aqueous phase both in the presence and in the absence of a bacterial suspension. Immobilized copper and cuprous oxide nanoparticles can be used for batch or continuous disinfection of water.

Investigations related to polymer/metal composites are often limited to the analysis of the electrical and thermal conductivity of the materials. The presented study aims to analyze the impact of aluminum (Al) filler content (from 1 to 20 wt%) on the rarely investigated properties of composites based on the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix. The crystalline structure, rheological (melt flow index and oscillatory rheometry), thermal (differential scanning calorimetry), as well as static (tensile tests, hardness, rebound resilience) and dynamic (dynamical mechanical analysis) mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The incorporation of 1 and 2 wt% of aluminum filler resulted in small enhancements of mechanical properties, while loadings of 5 and 10 wt% provided materials with a similar performance to neat HDPE. Such results were supported by the lack of disturbances in the rheological behavior of composites. The presented results indicate that a significant content of aluminum filler may be introduced into the HDPE matrix without additional pre-treatment and does not cause the deterioration of composites' performance, which should be considered beneficial when engineering PE/metal composites.

The effect of six halogen-free flame retardant (FR) formulations was investigated on the thermal stability of two low-density polyethylenes (LDPE) and one linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under nitrogen and air atmosphere. The relative data were combined with flammability properties and the overall performance of the FRs was correlated with the type of branching in the polyethylene grades and to their processing behavior. The thermal degradation kinetics was further determined based on the Kissinger and Coats-Redfern methods. In terms of flammability, the addition of a triazine derivative and ammonium polyphosphate at a loading of 35 wt. %. was found to be the most efficient, leading to UL 94 V0 ranking in the case of the LDPE grade produced in an autoclave reactor.

A novel tandem catalysis system consisted of salicylaldiminato binuclear/mononuclear titanium and 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl iron complexes was developed to catalyze ethylene in-situ copolymerization. Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with varying molecular weight and branching degree was successfully prepared with ethylene as the sole monomer feed. The polymerization conditions, including the reaction temperature, the Fi/Ti molar ratio, and the structures of bi- or mononuclear Ti complexes were found to greatly influence the catalytic performances and the properties of obtained polymers. The polymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), high temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and high temperature 13 C NMR spectroscopy, and found to contain ethyl, butyl, as well as some longer branches. The binuclear titanium complexes demonstrated excellent catalytic activity (up to 8.95 × 10 6 g/molTi·h·atm) and showed a strong positive comonomer effect when combined with the bisiminopyridyl Fe complex. The branching degree can be tuned from 2.53 to 22.89/1000C by changing the reaction conditions or using different copolymerization pre-catalysts. The melting points, crystallinity and molecular weights of the products can also be modified accordingly. The binuclear complex Ti 2 L 1 with methylthio sidearm showed higher capability for comonomer incorporation and produced polymers with higher branching degree and much higher molecular weight compared with the mononuclear analogue.

Due to its excellent mechanical properties and reinforcement abilities, cellulose has become a promising candidate for developing nanocomposites. However, cellulose agglomeration is an issue that must be solved. In this study, we treated microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) with a mixture of the non-ionic surfactants Span80 and Tween80 (ratio of 1:1) in order to prevent the intermolecular hydrogen bond aggregation of MFC during the process of MFC drying. We used a conical twin-screw extruder to melt compounds for the surfactant-treated MFC and powdered LLDPE. Furthermore, the extruded mixture was hot-pressed into a film, and we also tested the properties of the composite film. We can conclude that there was no agglomeration in the composite film according to microscopic observations and light transmittance test results. Furthermore, the dispersion of the surfactant-treated MFC (STMFC) was uniform until the STMFC filler increased to 10 wt%. The mechanical test results show that when the content of STMFC filler was 10 wt%, the mechanical properties of the composite were optimal. Compared to LLDPE, the STMFC/LLDPE composite film had an increase of 41.03% in tensile strength and an increase of 106.35% in Young's modulus. Under this system, the DSC results show that the melting point of LLDPE increased from 125 to 131 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the addition of STMFC did not change the crystallinity of the STMFC/LDPE composites, although the crystallite size increased.

Cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu₂ONPs) were used for preparing composites with linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) by co-extrusion, thermal adhesion, and attachment using ethyl cyanoacrylate, trimethoxyvinylsilane, and epoxy resin. The composites were examined by Scanning electron microscope and tested for their antibacterial activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli . All of these composites-except for the one obtained by extrusion-eradicated cells of both bacteria within half an hour. The composite prepared by thermal adhesion of Cu₂ONPs on LLDPE had the highest external exposure of nanoparticles and exhibited the highest activity against the bacteria. This composite and the one obtained using ethyl cyanoacrylate showed no leaching of copper ions into the aqueous phase. Copper ion leaching from composites prepared with trimethoxyvinylsilane and epoxy resin was very low. The antibacterial activity of the composites can be rated as follows: obtained by thermal adhesion > obtained using ethyl cyanoacrylate > obtained using trimethoxyvinylsilane > obtained using epoxy resin > obtained by extrusion. The composites with the highest activity are potential materials for tap water and wastewater disinfection.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were surface modified by esterification in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 25 °C using different catalysts and anhydrides bearing different alkyl side chain lengths. Unmodified and acetic anhydride (AcAnh)-modified CNCs were studied as potential nanofillers for linear low-density poly(ethylene) (LLDPE). Nanocomposites were prepared by melt processing. Determination of the size and size distribution of CNCs in the nanocomposites by SEM revealed an enhanced compatibility of the AcAnh-modified CNCs with the LLDPE matrix, since the average size of the aggregates of the modified CNCs (0.5⁻5 μm) was smaller compared to that of the unmodified CNCs (2⁻20 μm). Tensile test experiments revealed an increase in the nanocomposites' stiffness and strain at break-by 20% and up to 90%, respectively-at the CNC concentration of 5 wt %, which is close to the critical percolation concentration. Since the CNC nanofiller simultaneously reduced LLDPE crystallinity, the reinforcement effect of CNCs was hampered. Therefore, the molding temperature was increased to 120 °C, and, in this way, the greatest increase of the Young's modulus was achieved (by ~45%). Despite the enhanced compatibility of the AcAnh-modified CNCs with the LLDPE matrix, no additional effect on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was observed in comparison to the unmodified CNC.
