The ubiquitous presence of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in soil has raised concerns regarding their potential effects on terrestrial plants. The coexistence and interactions between MNPs and heavy metals altering their phytotoxicity deserves further investigation. In this study, we explored the impacts of various concentrations of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and cadmium (Cd) alone or in combination on the growth and development of Arabidopsis thaliana. Additionally, we examined the effects of combined stress on the uptake and translocation of Cd within Arabidopsis thaliana. Our findings revealed several key insights: PS-NPs exhibited the capability to internalize in the maturation zone of Arabidopsis roots; the presence of Cd changed the particle size and zeta potential of PS-NPs; the presence of PS-NPs heightened Cd accumulation in the underground parts of Arabidopsis seedlings, leading to a stronger oxidative stress response in these regions; the composite stress exerted a more pronounced effect on the growth and development of Arabidopsis compared to individual stresses. Interestingly, while higher PS-NPs concentrations hindered Cd migration from roots to leaves, they also acted as carriers for Cd uptake in Arabidopsis roots. Constructing a photocatalytic membrane and photo-Fenton reaction coupling system is a novel strategy to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the membrane and eliminate the problem of membrane contamination. Herein, a g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 MoO 6 /PVDF photocatalytic membrane was prepared using a tannic acid-assisted in-situ deposition method. The membrane was characterized by three advantages of photocatalytic, self-cleaning, and antibacterial properties. Under the photo-Fenton-like conditions, the membrane had superior photodegradation efficiency of 90.7% for tetracycline, one of the main antibiotic contaminants in the China's aquatic system. Moreover, the membrane had excellent photo-Fenton self-cleaning ability, its flux recovery rate was up to 96%-98% after the self-cleaning process. Photoluminescence spectra, diffuse UV-visible spectrum, transient photocurrent responses, and electrochemical AC impedance spectrum results show that the heterojunction structure formed by g-C 3 N 4 and Bi 2 MoO 6 could improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons-hole pairs. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirmed the photo-electrons facilitated the formation of hydroxyl radical (·OH) in the existence of H 2 O 2 , which enhanced tetracycline degradation. Moreover, the superior photo-Fenton self-cleaning performance, which mainly relied on the active free radicals produced by the photo-Fenton-like membrane to remove dirt on the membrane surface or in the membrane pore channel. Freshwater scarcity and microplastics (MPs) pollution are two concerning and intertwined global challenges. In this work, we propose a "one stone kills two birds" strategy by employing an interfacial solar evaporation platform (ISEP) combined with a MPs adsorbent. This strategy aims to produce clean water and simultaneously enhance MPs removal. Unlike traditional predecessors, our ISEP generates condensed water free from MPs contamination. Additionally, the photothermally driven interfacial separation process significantly improves the MPs removal performance. We observed a removal ratio increase of up to 5.5 times compared to previously reported MPs adsorbents. Thus, our rationally-designed ISEP holds promising potential to not only mitigate the existing water scarcity issue but also remediate MPs pollution in natural water environments., (© 2024. Water pollution greatly impacts humans and ecosystems, so a series of policies have been enacted to control it. The first step in performing pollution control is to detect contaminants in the water. Various methods have been proposed for water quality testing, such as spectroscopy, chromatography, and electrochemical techniques. However, traditional testing methods require the utilization of laboratory equipment, which is large and not suitable for real-time testing in the field. Microfluidic devices can overcome the limitations of traditional testing instruments and have become an efficient and convenient tool for water quality analysis. At the same time, artificial intelligence is an ideal means of recognizing, classifying, and predicting data obtained from microfluidic systems. Microfluidic devices based on artificial intelligence and machine learning are being developed with great significance for the next generation of water quality monitoring systems. This review begins with a brief introduction to the algorithms involved in artificial intelligence and the materials used in the fabrication and detection techniques of microfluidic platforms. Then, the latest research development of combining the two for pollutant detection in water bodies, including heavy metals, pesticides, micro- and nanoplastics, and microalgae, is mainly introduced. Finally, the challenges encountered and the future directions of detection methods based on industrial intelligence and microfluidic chips are discussed.

Microplastics (MPs) have been widely found in the environment and have exerted non-negligible impacts on the environment and human health. Extensive research has shown that MPs can act as carriers for viruses and interacts with them in various ways. Whether MPs influence the persistence, transmission and infectivity of virus has attracted global concern in the context of increasing MPs contamination. This review paper provides an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the interactions between MPs and viruses in aquatic environments. Latest progress and research trends in this field are summarized based on literature analysis. Additionally, we discuss the potential risks posed by microplastic-associated viruses to human health and the environmental safety, highlighting that MPs can affect viral transmission and infectivity through various pathways. Finally, we underscores the need for further research to address key knowledge gaps, such as elucidating synergistic effects between MPs and viruses, understanding interactions under real environmental conditions, and exploring the role of biofilms in virus-MPs interactions. Water evaporation-induced electricity generators (WEGs) are regarded as one of the most promising solutions for addressing the increasingly severe environmental pollution and energy crisis. Owing to the potential carbon emission in the preparation process of WEGs, whether WEG represents a clean electricity generation technology is open to question. Here, a brand-new strategy is proposed for manufacturing negative carbon emission WEG (CWEG). In this strategy, the microalgae film is used as the electricity generation interface of WEG, which achieves a stable open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.25 V and a short-circuit current (I sc ) of 3.3 µA. Since microalgae can capture carbon dioxide during its growing process, CWEG holds great promise to generate electricity without carbon emissions in the full life cycle compared with other WEGs. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first work using microalgae films to fabricate WEG. Therefore, it is believed that this work not only provides a new direction for designing high-efficiency and eco-friendly WEG but also offers an innovative approach to the resource utilization of microalgae., (© 2024 The Authors. The clinical heterogeneity of early-stage endometrial cancer (EC) is worthy of further study to identify high-quality prognostic markers and their potential role in aggressive tumor behavior. Mutation of TP53 was considered as an important primary triage in modified molecular typing for EC, it still cannot precisely predict the prognosis of EC. After proteomic analysis of cancer and para-cancerous tissues from 24 early-stage endometrioid EC patients with different survival outcomes, 13 differentially expressed proteins were screen out while 2 proteins enriched in p53 signaling pathway were further identified by single-cell transcriptome (scRNA-seq). Interestingly, tumor necrosis factor type-1 receptor-associated protein (TRAP1) and calmodulin-regulated spectrin-associated protein family member 3 (CAMSAP3) were found to be significantly downregulated in the specific cell cluster. Expectedly, the signature genes of TRAP1 low /CAMSAP3 low cluster included classical oncogenes. Moreover, close cellular interactions were observed between myeloid cells and the TRAP1 low /CAMSAP3 low cluster after systematically elucidating their relationship with tumor microenvironment (TME). The expression of TRAP1 and CAMSAP3 was verified by immunohistochemistry. Thus, a novel prediction model combining TRAP1, CAMSAP3 and TP53 was construct by multi-omics. Compared with the area under the curve, it demonstrated a significantly improvemrnt in the diagnostic efficacy in EC patients from TCGA bank. In conclusion, this work improved the current knowledge regarding the prognosis of early-stage EC through proteomics and scRNA-seq. In recent years, numerous emerging contaminants have been identified in surface water, groundwater, and drinking water. Developing novel sensing methods for detecting diverse emerging pollutants in water is urgently needed, as even at low concentrations, these pollutants can pose a serious threat to human health and environmental safety. Traditional testing methods are based on laboratory equipment, which is highly sensitive but complex to operate, costly, and not suitable for on-site monitoring. Microfluidic sensors offer several benefits, including rapid evaluation, minimal sample usage, accurate liquid manipulation, compact size, automation, and in-situ detection capabilities. They provide promising and efficient analytical tools for high-performance sensing platforms in monitoring emerging contaminants in water. In this paper, recent research advances in microfluidic sensors for the detection of emerging contaminants in water are reviewed. Initially, a concise overview is provided about the various substrate materials, corresponding microfabrication techniques, different driving forces, and commonly used detection techniques for microfluidic devices. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis is conducted on microfluidic detection methods for endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, microplastics, and perfluorinated compounds. This study aimed to explore the relationship between life events and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in college students, as well as the mediating effect of sleep disturbances and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). After excluding invalid questionnaires, 5,754 were retained, and the valid efficiency was 75.94%. The subjects were aged 16 to 29 years (M = 19.166; SD = 1.392), with 1,969 males (34.22%) and 3,785 females (65.78%). Life events, sleep disturbances, PLEs, and NSSI were assessed using standard scales. Data were analyzed by Pearson Correlation Analysis and bias-correction percentile Bootstrap method. The results show that (1) life events were significant positive predictors of NSSI, sleep disturbances, and PLEs; (2) sleep disturbances, PLEs, and the chain mediation between the two, were mediators between life events and NSSI. Life events are thus shown to be an important external factor influencing NSSI in university students, and this process is mediated through sleep disturbances, PLEs, and the chain between the two. Methylmercury (MeHg) production in aquatic ecosystems is a global concern because of its neurotoxic effect. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycling of Hg. However, owing to its complex composition, the effects of DOM on net MeHg production have not been fully understood. Here, the Hg isotope tracer technique combined with different DOM treatments was employed to explore the influences of DOM with divergent compositions on Hg methylation/demethylation and its microbial mechanisms in eutrophic lake waters. Our results showed that algae-derived DOM treatments enhanced MeHg concentrations by 1.42-1.53 times compared with terrestrial-derived DOM. Algae-derived DOM had largely increased the methylation rate constants by approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude compared to terrestrial-derived DOM, but its effects on demethylation rate constants were less pronounced, resulting in the enhancement of net MeHg formation. The abundance of hgcA and merB genes suggested that Hg-methylating and MeHg-demethylating microbiomes responded differently to DOM treatments. Specific DOM components (e.g., aromatic proteins and soluble microbial byproducts) were positively correlated with both methylation rate constants and the abundance of Hg-methylating microbiomes. Collecting energy from the ambient environment through green and sustainable methods is highly expected to alleviate pollution and energy problems worldwide. Here, we report a facile and flexible hydrovoltaic generator capable of utilizing natural water evaporation for sustainable electricity production. The generator was fabricated by coating nano-Al 2 O 3 on a twistable polyethylene terephthalate film. An open circuit voltage of 1.7 V was obtained on a piece of centimeter-sized hydrovoltaic generator under ambient conditions. The supercapacitor charged by the hydrovoltaic device can power a mini-motor efficiently. Moreover, by expanding the size or connecting it in series/parallel, the energy output of the generator can be further improved. Finally, the influence factors and the mechanism for power generation were primarily investigated. Electrical energy is produced by the migration of water through charged capillary channels. The environmental conditions, the properties of the solution and the morphology of the film have important effects on the electrical performance. This study is anticipated to offer enlightenment into designing novel hydrovoltaic devices, providing diverse energy sources for various self-powered devices and systems.

Antibiotics and microplastics (MPs) coexisting as unique environmental contaminants may cause unintended environmental issues. In this study, the adsorption-desorption behaviors of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on both original and UV-aged MPs were examined. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and polyethylene (PE), which represent degradable and refractory MPs, respectively, were chosen as two distinct types of MPs. Furthermore, simulated fish intestinal fluids (SFIF) and simulated mammalian stomach fluids (SMGF) were employed to evaluate the desorption behaviors of SMX from aged MPs. Our findings demonstrate that UV-aging altered the polarity, hydrophilicity, and structure of the MPs. Aged MPs showed a higher adsorption capacity than the original MPs and they have a higher desorption capacity than original MPs in simulated body fluids. PE has a higher SMX desorption capacity in SFIF and the opposite happened in SMGF. Cyanotoxins produced by cyanobacteria are a significant threat to human health. However, their responses to nitrogen (N) supplies could differ between N-fixing and non-N-fixing species, which has been poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the responses of the non-N-fixing Microcystis aeruginosa and N-fixing Nostoc sp. to varying concentrations of nitrate and ammonium. This comparison had been conducted by analyzing chlorophyll-a contents, maximum quantum efficiencies of photosystem II, microcystin production, and related gene expressions. Our findings revealed that nitrate substantially stimulated the growth of both M. aeruginosa and Nostoc sp. with biomass increase by 366.2 ± 56.5 and 93.0 ± 14.0%, respectively, at 16 mg-N/L. In contrast, high ammonium concentrations suppressed their growth. Furthermore, the intracellular concentration of microcystins produced by M. aeruginosa was higher under high nitrate. Extracellular microcystins showed an opposite trend to increases in nitrate and ammonium. Ammonium increases the production and releases microcystin from Nostoc sp. N metabolism genes showed a similar trend with toxin formation genes, which were up-regulated under the high N treatments. This study provides valuable insights into the impacts of N supplies on growths of N- and non-N-fixing cyanobacteria, as well as microcystin production, which helps to develop effective strategies for managing cyanobacterial blooms.

The establishment of simple and sensitive detection methods for fluoride ion (F - ) is of great importance for its effective prevention and control, and metal-organic framework (MOF) has attracted much attention for sensing applications due to its high surface areas and tunable structures. Herein, we successfully synthesized a fluorescent probe for ratiometric sensing of F - by encapsulating sensitized Tb 3+ in a MOF-on-MOF material (UIO66/MOF801, with the formula of C 48 H 28 O 32 Zr 6 and C 24 H 2 O 32 Zr 6 , respectively). We found that Tb 3+ @UIO66/MOF801 can be used as a built-in fluorescent probe for fluorescence-enhanced sensing of F - . Interestingly, the two fluorescence emission peaks of Tb 3+ @UIO66/MOF801 at 375 nm and 544 nm exhibit different fluorescence responses to F - under excitation at 300 nm. The 544 nm peak is sensitive to F - , while the 375 nm peak is insensitive to it. Photophysical analysis indicated that the photosensitive substance was formed, which promotes the absorption of 300 nm excitation light by the system. Self-calibrating fluorescent detection of F - was achieved due to the unequal energy transfer toward the two different emission centers. The detection limit of Tb 3+ @UIO66/MOF801 for F - was 4.029 μM, which is far lower than the WHO guideline for drinking water. Moreover, the ratiometric fluorescence strategy showed a high concentration tolerance of interference, because of its inner-reference effect. Cadmium pollution turns out to be a global environmental problem. This study conducted a quantitative and qualitative bibliometric analysis based on 9188 research items from the Web of Science Core Collection published in the last 20 years (2000-2020), presenting an in-depth statistical investigation of global freshwater cadmium research progress and developing trend. Our results demonstrated that the researchers from China, the USA, and India contribute the most to this field. The primary sources of cadmium are mining, industry, wastewater, sedimentation, and agricultural activities. In developing countries, cadmium exposure occurs mainly through the air, freshwater, and food. Fish and vegetables are the main food sources of cadmium for humans because of their high accumulation capability. Source evaluation, detection, and remediation represent the main technologies used to clean up cadmium-contaminated sites. To mitigate the risk of cadmium contamination in freshwater, biomarker-based cadmium monitoring methods and integrated policies/strategies to reduce cadmium exposure merit further concern., (© 2021. Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are ubiquitous pollutants in the aquatic environment. In this study, the sorption behavior of two typical MPs (PVC and PE) to bivalent zinc ions (Zn(II)) and their combined toxic effects on Chlorella vulgaris were systemically studied. The growth inhibition rate, the activities of photosynthesis and antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT), the cell membrane integrity and the cell apoptosis rate were employed to evaluate the toxicity. Our result showed that PVC and PE have different adsorption capacities for Zn(II), and the combined exposure to Zn(II) and MPs had distinct patterns on the inhibition of the cell growth and induction of oxidative stress. Under our experimental concentrations, PE and Zn(II) showed a synergistic effect, while PVC and Zn(II) exhibited an antagonistic effect. Finally, an action mechanism was proposed to explain the experimental phenomena. This study demonstrated that flow cytometry can be a powerful tool to study the toxic effect of MP composites, and MPs can not only allow a free ride for the water contaminants, but also remarkably alter their toxic effects on phytoplankton. Overuse of antibiotics posed a global threat to human health and the ecological environment. Efficient detection and control of antibiotic pollution demand novel sensory materials. Here, a dual-luminescent material FS@UIO66 was successfully synthesized by encapsulating fluorescent molecules (fluorescein sodium, FS) in UIO66 based on the in-situ encapsulation method. We found that the dual emission peaks of FS@UIO66 at 369 and 515 nm can be sensitively and synchronously quenched by tetracycline (TET). Interestingly, these two peak intensities were switched anisotropically by levofloxacin (LEV), in which the signal at 515 nm was enhanced. Photophysical analysis revealed that there may exist a competition and replenishment mechanism in the sensing processes. The ratiometric fluorescent feature was employed for rapid detection of TET and LEV, with detection limits of 0.2444 μM and 0.2808 μM for TET and LEV, respectively. The superior sensitivity, high selectivity, and excellent recyclability of FS@UIO66 in sensing TET and LEV were demonstrated in this work. In addition, TET and LEV were also successfully detected by FS@UIO66 in water from real water environment. The effects of magnetic field-assisted immersion freezing (MF) with different intensities (20, 40, 60, and 80 mT) on the freezing process and muscle quality of white shrimp ( Litopenaeus vannamei ) were studied in the present study. The results showed that, compared with immersion freezing (IF), 60 mT MF (MF-60) shortened the total freezing time, reduced thawing loss and cooking loss, and helped to maintain the water holding capacity and texture properties of frozen shrimp samples. In addition, the increase in the L * value of frozen shrimp samples was also inhibited by MF-60. The result of water distribution revealed that MF-60 reduced the mobility and loss of immobilized water and free water. The microstructure of MF-60 was characterized by smaller pores, indicating that MF-60 promoted the generation of fine ice crystals. The current study aimed to explore the impact of a school-based mindfulness intervention on bullying behaviors among teenagers. A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted, in which the experimental group ( n = 92) received mindfulness intervention, and the control group ( n = 97) did not. The measured outcomes included: bullying behavior, self-control, and trait mindfulness. The results were as follows: (1) the post-test scores of trait mindfulness and self-control in the experimental group significantly increased ( p < 0.01) while the scores of bullying behavior significantly decreased ( p < 0.01); (2) trait mindfulness was positively associated with self-control (r = 0.13 to 0.63, p < 0.05), whereas trait mindfulness and self-control were both negatively associated with bullying behavior (r = -0.38 to -0.13, p < 0.05); and (3) the mediating effect of self-control accounted for 50% of the overall effect of trait mindfulness on bullying behavior. These findings demonstrated that the school-based mindfulness intervention distinctly improves trait mindfulness and self-control and reduces bullying behavior among teenagers. Moreover, self-control plays a mediating role between trait mindfulness and bullying behavior.

Emerging pollutants, such as microplastics (MPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) may pose a serious threat to human health and ecological safety. However, little is known about the MP-mediated PBDEs exposures and their combined toxicities towards farmed fishes. This study investigated the sorption behaviors of two typical PBDEs (BDE-47 and BDE-209) to MPs of different polymer types (PE, PS, PHA and PHB), and examined their combined toxic effects on grouper (Epinephelus moara) by determining the change of oxidative stress markers and comparing gene expression difference through high-throughput sequencing. Our results demonstrated that the sorption of PBDEs on MPs were polymer type-dependent and the sorption capacities were in the order of PHA>PHB>PS>PE. The combined exposures of MPs and PBDEs led to more severe disturbance on the oxidative system compared with individual exposure. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the content of glutathione were decreased, while the activity of catalase (CAT) and the content of malondialdehyde were increased. The disorder of oxidative system can influence the growth of groupers. High-throughput sequencing confirmed that pathways of ferroptosis, IL-17 and PPAR expressed differently under combined exposure of MPs and BDE-47. IL-17 pathway related genes were inhibited, while genes in PPAR pathway were upregulated. The combined exposure brought more severe effect on grouper's gene expression compared with individual exposure. GPX-related genes and CAT gene in the liver were up-regulated, while SOD-related genes were down-regulated. Graphene-based membranes have unique nanochannels and can offer advantageous properties for the water desalination process. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to heightening membrane performance and broadening their application, there is still lack of a systematic literature review on the development and future directions of graphene-based membranes for desalination. In this mini-review, literature published between 2011 and 2022 were analyzed by using the bibliometric method. We found that the major contributors to these publications and the highest citations were from China and the USA. Nearly 80% of author keywords in this analysis were used less than twice, showing the broad interest and great dispersion in this field. The recent advances, remaining gaps, and strategies for future research, were discussed. The development of new multifunctional nanocomposite materials, heat-driven/solar-driven seawater desalination, and large-scale industrial applications, will be important research directions in the future. This literature analysis summarized the recent development of the graphene-based membranes for desalination application, and will be useful for researchers in gaining new insights into this field.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the advantages of tunable pore sizes and porosity and have demonstrated unique advantages for various applications. This study synthesized composite MOF nanomaterials by modifying MOF801 or AlOOH with UIO66. The composite nanomaterials, UIO66/MOF801 and UIO66/AlOOH showed increased Zeta potential than their pristine form, AlOOH, UIO66 and MOF801. For the first time, the composite MOFs were used to fabricate filter paper-based evaporation-driven power generators for spontaneous electricity generation. The MOFs-KBF membrane was constructed by coating filter paper (10 × 50 mm) with composite MOFs and conductive Ketjen Black. The UIO66/MOF801 decorated device achieved a maximum open circuit voltage of 0.329 ± 0.005 V and maximum output power of 2.253 μW. The influence of salt concentration (0.1-0.5 M) on power generation was also analyzed and discussed. Finally, as a proof-of-concept application, the device was employed as a salinity sensor to realize remote monitoring of salinity. This work demonstrated the potential of flexible MOF composites for spontaneous power generation from water evaporation and provides a potential way to enhance the performance of evaporation-driven power generators.

Microplastics (MPs) are increasingly entering the urban aquatic ecosystems, and the environmental significance and health risks of plastisphere, a special biofilm on MPs, have received widespread attention. In this study, MPs of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and quartzite were incubated in an urban water environment, and the tetracycline (TC) degradation ability was compared. Approximatedly 24% of TC biodegraded in 28 d in the water-quartzite system, which is significantly higher than that in the water-PLA (17.3%) and water-PVC systems (16.7%). Re-incubation of microorganisms in biofilms affirmed that quartzite biofilm has a higher TC degradation capacity than the plastisphere. According to high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and metagenomic analysis, quartzite biofilm contained more abundant potential TC degrading bacteria, genes related to TC degradation (eutG, aceE, and DLAT), and metabolic pathways related to TC degradation. An oligotrophic environment on the quartzite surface might lead to the higher metabolic capacity of quartzite biofilm for unconventional carbons, e.g., TC. It is also found that, compared with quartzite biofilm, the distinct microbes in the plastisphere carried more antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Higher affinity of MPs surface to antibiotics may lead to higher antibiotics stress on the plastisphere, which further amplify the carrying capacity for ARGs of microorganisms in the plastisphere. Compared to the nondegradable PVC MPs, surface of the biodegradable PLA plastics harbored significantly higher amounts of biomass and ARGs. Compared to the mineral particles, the capability of plastisphere has lower ability to degrade unconventional carbon sources such as the refractory organic pollutants, due to the abundance of carbon sources (adsorbed organic carbon and endogenous organic carbon) on the MPs surface. Meanwhile, the stronger adsorption capacity for pollutants also leads to higher pollutant stress (such as antibiotic stress) in plastisphere, which in turn affects the microbiological characteristics of the plastisphere itself, such as carrying more ARGs., (Copyright © 2022. Objectives: The aim of this study is to interpret a quantitative diagnosis model of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes based on computer adaptive testing (CAT), from the perspective of both patients and clinicians., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, patients with postprandial distress syndrome completed the CAT model of TCM syndromes and the Chinese version of the Quality of Life Questionnaire for Functional Digestive Disorders (Chin-FDDQL); the clinicians' diagnosis was concurrently recorded. The patients completed this questionnaire again after 14 ± 2 days. The kappa test and paired chi-square test were used to evaluate the consistency between the CAT model and clinical diagnosis. Minimal clinically important differences (MCID) of the Chin-FDDQL scores were used to assess clinical efficacy from the patients' perspective. Logistic regression was used to examine the association between changes in the CAT model syndrome domain scores and changes in clinical outcomes., Results: Changes in the CAT model syndrome domain scores may affect the clinical outcomes of patients with the total scores of Chin-FDDQL (all P < 0.05). There was a correlation between changes in the CAT model syndrome domain scores and the patients' clinical outcomes. Different syndrome elements had different effects on various Chin-FDDQL domains, which was consistent with the theory of TCM., Conclusions: This study proposes a method for the clinical interpretation of the CAT model of TCM syndromes, including evidence derived from the application. The main route of metastasis of bladder urothelial carcinoma is through lymph nodes; however, its exact mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we found an association of nucleolar and spindle associated protein 1 (NUSAP1) expression with BUC tissues along with lymph node metastasis and the survival prognosis. A total of 178 pathological specimens following radical bladder cancer resection were obtained. NUSAP1 expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. We evaluated the correlation between clinicopathological characteristics and NUSAP1 expression. Logistic regression was used to determine the independent variables that influenced lymph node metastasis. Uni- and multi-factorial Cox regression methods were used to determine the prognostic value of NUSAP1 expression in urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. High expression of NUSAP1 in BUC was not significantly related to the patient's gender, age, or tumor number (p > 0.05), however was significantly associated with pathological grade, tumor diameter, pathological stage, and lymph node metastasis (p < 0.05). Lymph node metastasis was significantly correlated with pathological stage, pathological grade, tumor number, tumor diameter, and NUSAP1 expression (p < 0.05); only NUSAP1 expression was an independent predictor of lymph node metastasis in BUC (OR:1.786, 95% CI 1.229-2.596, p = 0.002). In addition, high NUSAP1 expression was an independent prognostic predictor for BUC. In BUC, NUSAP1 showed high expression and was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis, pathological stage, pathological grade, and tumor diameter. There has been a steady rise in the production and disposal of biodegradable plastics. Unlike the microorganisms present in the biofilms on non-biodegradable plastic surfaces (the "plastisphere"), the plastisphere of biodegradable plastic has not been well-characterized. As the polymer structure of biodegradable plastic has a higher microbial affinity than that of non-biodegradable plastic, their plastispheres are assumed to be different. This review summarizes the reported differences in microbial communities on the surface of biodegradable and non-biodegradable plastics, discusses the driving forces behind these differences, and discusses the potential environmental risks. Overall, the plastisphere biomass on the surface of non-biodegradable plastic was observed to be lower than that of biodegradable plastic. The community structure of microbes in both plastispheres was diverse, mainly due to the properties of the plastic surface, such as surface charge, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, roughness, and bioavailability of polymer components for microbes. Produced water (PW) is the main waste produced by oil and gas industry, and its treatment represents an environmental and economical challenge for governments and the industry itself. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) emerge as an ecofriendly technology able to harvest energy and remove pollutants at the same time, however high internal resistance is a key problem limiting their operating performance and practical application. In this work, a novel continuous up-flow MFC was designed and fed solely using PW under different flowrates. Effects of the different flowrates (0 mL/s, 0.2 mL/s, 0.4 mL/s, and 0.6 mL/s) in power production performance and pollutants removal were analyzed. Our results demonstrated the removal efficiency of all the pollutants improved when flowrate incremented from 0 to 0.4 mL/s (COD: 96%, TDS: 22%, sulfates: 64%, TPH: 89%), but decreased when 0.6 mL/s was applied. The best power density of 227 mW/m 2 was achieved in a flowrate of 0.4 mL/s. Similar to the pollutant's removal, the power density increased together with the increment of flowrate and decreased when 0.6 mL/s was used. The reason for the performance fluctuation was the decrement of internal resistance from 80 Ω (batch mode) to 20 Ω (0.4 mL/s), and then the sudden increment to 90 Ω for 0.6 mL/s. A flow simulation revealed that until 0.4 mL/s the flow was organized and helped protons to arrive in the membrane faster, but flowrate of 0.6 mL/s created turbulence which prejudiced the transportation of protons incrementing the internal resistance. Microbial community analysis of the biofilm found that Desulfuromonas, Desulfovibrio and Geoalkalibacter were dominant bacteria in charge of pollutant removal and electricity production. Background: Exploratory eye movements (EEMs) and P300 are often used to facilitate the clinical diagnosis of depression. However, There were few studies using the combination of EEMs and P300 to build a model for detecting depression and predicting a curative effect., Methods: Sixty patients were recruited for 2 groups: high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS) combined with paroxetine group and simple paroxetine group. Clinical efficacy was evaluated by the Hamilton Depression scale-24(HAMD-24), EEMs and P300. The classification model of the auxiliary diagnosis of depression and the prediction model of the two treatments were developed based on a machine learning algorithm., Results: The classification model with the greatest accuracy for patients with depression and healthy controls was 95.24% (AUC = 0.75, recall = 1.00, precision = 0.95, F1-score = 0.97). The root mean square error (RMSE) of the model for predicting the efficacy of high frequency rTMS combined with paroxetine was 3.54 (MAE [mean absolute error] = 2.56, R 2  = -0.53). The RMSE of the model for predicting the efficacy of paroxetine was 4.97 (MAE = 4.00, R 2  = -0.91)., Conclusion: Based on the machine learning algorithm, P300 and EEMs data was suitable for modeling to distinguish depression patients and healthy individuals. A vertically configured photocatalytic-microbial fuel cell (photo-MFC) is developed by combining a nanodiamond-decorated ZnO (ZnO/ND) photocathode with a bioanode. The system can effectively couple the light energy with bioenergy to enhance the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and boost electricity output. Results show that the composite system exhibits increased performance for toluene removal (60.65%), higher than those of individual parts (ZnO/ND-photocatalysis: 37.16%, MFC: 17.81%). Furthermore, its electrochemical performance is dramatically increased. The peak power density of 120 mW/m 2 and the current density of 1.07 A/m 2 are generated under light illumination, which are about 1.57-fold and 1.37-fold higher than that under dark (76 mW/m 2 , 0.78 A/m 2 ), respectively. Microbial community analysis demonstrates Proteobacteria and Firmicute are dominant phyla, implying they play important roles on accelerating the extracellular-electron transfer and toluene degradation. In addition, the underlying mechanism for toluene degradation in the photo-MFC system is preliminary explored. Disposal of the high volume of produced water (PW) is a big challenge to the oil and gas industry. High cost of conventional treatment facilities, increasing energy prices and environmental concern had focused governments and the industry itself on more efficient treatment methods. Bioelectrochemical system (BES) has attracted the attention of researchers because it represents a sustainable way to treat wastewater. This is the first review that summarizes the progress done in PW-fed BESs with a critical analysis of the parameters that influence their performances. Inoculum, temperature, hydraulic retention time, external resistance, and the use of real or synthetic produced water were found to be deeply related to the performance of BES. Microbial fuel cells are the most analyzed BES in this field followed by different types of microbial desalination cells. High concentration of sulfates in PW suggests that most of hydrocarbons are removed mainly by using sulfates as terminal electron acceptor (TEA), but other TEAs such as nitrate or metals can also be employed. The use of real PW as feed in experiments is highly recommended because biofilms when using synthetic PW are not the same. The accumulation of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) has attracted immense global attention due to their adverse effects on the environment. Photosynthesis, an interface between non-living matter and living organisms, is very important for both energy flow and material circulation on our planet. Increasing evidence indicates that MNPs can pose direct or indirect stress effects on photoautotrophs, however, our knowledge about them is still limited. The purposes of this mini-review are (1) to review the latest literature of the impacts of MNPs on photosynthesis activities and summarize diverse impacts of MNPs on photosynthesis activities of different photoautotrophs (green plants, microalgae, and cyanobacteria); (2) to discuss the potential action mechanisms in both aquatic and terrestrial environments; and (3) various factors contributing toward these impacts. Schizochytrium species are one of the best oleaginous thraustochytrids for high-yield production of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6). However, the DHA yields from most wild-type (WT) strains of Schizochytrium are unsatisfactory for large-scale production. In this study, we applied the atmospheric and room-temperature plasma (ARTP) tool to obtain the mutant library of a previously isolated strain of Schizochytrium (i.e., PKU#Mn4). Two rounds of ARTP mutagenesis coupled with the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor (clethodim)-based screening yielded the mutant A78 that not only displayed better growth, glucose uptake and ACCase activity, but also increased (54.1%) DHA content than that of the WT strain. Subsequent optimization of medium components and supplementation improved the DHA content by 75.5 and 37.2%, respectively, compared with that of mutant A78 cultivated in the unoptimized medium. Interestingly, the ACCase activity of mutant A78 in a medium supplemented with biotin, citric acid or sodium citrate was significantly greater than that in a medium without supplementation. This study provides an effective bioengineering approach for improving the DHA accumulation in oleaginous microbes.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and can be frequently ingested by zooplankton, leading to various effects. Brine shrimp ( Artemia parthenogenetica ) has an important role in the energy flow through trophic levels in different seawater systems. In this work, the influence of polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) MPs on the growth of brine shrimp and corresponding changes of gut microbiota were investigated. Our results showed that the MPs remarkably reduced the growth rate of brine shrimp, and the two types of MPs have different impacts. The average body length of brine shrimps was reduced by 17.92 and 14.95% in the PE group and PS group, respectively. MPs are mainly found in the intestine, and their exposure evidently affects the gut microbiota. By using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, 32 phyla of bacteria were detected in the intestine, and the microbiome consisted mainly of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. MPs' exposure significantly increased the gut microbial diversity. For the PE group, the proportion of Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes increased by 45.26 and 2.73%, respectively. For the PS group, it was 54.95 and 1.27%, respectively. According to the analysis on genus level, the proportions of Ponticoccus , Seohaeicola , Polycyclovorans , and Methylophaga decreased by 46.38, 1.24, 1.07, and 2.66%, respectively, for the PE group and 57.87, 1.43, 0.88, and 2.24%, respectively, for the PS group. In contrast, the proportions of Stappia , Microbacterium , and Dietzia increased by 1.12, 23.27, and 11.59%, respectively, for the PE group, and 1.09, 3.79, and 42.96%, respectively, for the PS group. These experimental results demonstrated that the ingestion of MPs by brine shrimp can alter the composition of the gut microbiota and lead to a slow growth rate. Microplastic (MP) pollution has attracted global attention due to the extensive use of plastic products. The hydrophobic MP surface provides a habitat for multiple microorganisms. Although there have been several studies on the impact of plastic particles on microbial communities, there are few reviews that have systematically summarized the interaction between MPs and microbes and their effects on human health and biochemical circulation. The discussions in this review will take place under the following topics: (1) MPs prompt colonization, biofilm generation, and transfer of environmental microbes; (2) the microbial communities can cause the morphological alterations and biodegradation of MPs; (3) MP-microbe combinations can induce the alteration of intestinal flora and hazard animal health; (4) the biogeochemical cycles affected by MP-microbe interactions. Microplastics (MPs), tiny particles broken down from larger pieces of plastics, have accumulated everywhere on the earth. As an inert carbon stream in aquatic environment, they have been reported as carriers for heavy metals and exhibit diverse interactive effects. However, these interactions are still poorly understood, especially mechanisms driving these interactions and how they pose risks on living organisms. In this mini review, a bibliometric analysis in this field was conducted and then the mechanisms driving these interactions were examined, especially emphasizing the important roles of microorganisms on the interactions. Their combined toxic effects and the potential hazards to human health were also discussed. Finally, the future research directions in this field were suggested. This study is to explore the function of working memory (WM) and autobiographical memory (AM) in patients with chronic pain. Totally, 331 patients with chronic pain and 333 healthy controls were recruited. These subjects were subjected to assessment with Pain Assessment Protocol (PAP), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Working Memory Index (WMI) and Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT). Patients with chronic pain scored significantly lower in WMI and higher in overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM) of AMT. Chronic pain was significantly negatively related with WM and positively related with OGM. The structural equation model indicated that WM mediated the relationship of chronic pain and OGM. These findings suggest that WM and AM are impaired in the patients with chronic pain,,chronic pain is closely related with OGM, and WM acts an important mediating role between chronic pain and OGM.

Palm tree peroxidase has greater catalytic activity, stability and broad application prospects in comparison with horseradish peroxidase. However, slow growth, ecological destruction and high costs prohibit isolation of native peroxidases directly from palm trees. Bioreactor production of palm tree peroxidases would therefore be preferred to overcome such production limitations. Comparison of different recombinant glycan-free palm tree peroxidases would allow understanding the criticality of total glycans to the functions and characteristics. In the present study, African oil palm tree peroxidase expressed by Escherichia coli showed similar stability and 30-100-fold greater activity than that of recombinant royal palm tree peroxidases, but both of their comprehensive indexes were superior to the commercial, native horseradish peroxidase. Recombinant Chamaerops excelsa peroxidase showed no activity possibly due to incorrect protein folding. Purpose: Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a routine operation for the treatment of osteoporotic lumbar compression fractures (OLCFs). As is well known, unilateral puncture is a common method. However, with the conventional transpedicular approach (CTPA), the cement may be asymmetrically dispersed, so some surgeons use the transverse process root-pedicle approach (TPRPA). The objective of this study was to compare the clinical results and bone cement distribution of PVP for OLCF with unilateral TPRPA and CTPA to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the two surgical options., Patients and Methods: From January 2016 to June 2019, seventy-two elderly patients who underwent unilateral PVP for single-level OLCF were retrospectively reviewed. Operation time, injection amount and type of bone cement distribution, and bone cement leakage and surgical complications were recorded. The visual analog scale (VAS) scores and Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores were used to evaluate the clinical results. All patients were followed up for more than 12 months, and the assessment was based primarily on clinical and radiological outcomes., Results: There were significant differences in the surgical time and the volume and the type of bone cement distribution and the lost of operative vertebra height between the two groups. However, there was no significant difference in bone cement leakage. Moreover, there were no significant differences in VAS and ODI between the two groups at 2 days and 12 months after the operation., Conclusions: Unilateral TPRPA and CTPA are practical and feasible methods in PVP for the treatment of OLCF, and they have similar clinical effects. However, TPRPA has the advantages of a better distribution of bone cement and a shorter operation time and a better maintenance effect of injured vertebra height, without increasing the rate of bone cement leakage.

Microplastic (MP) pollution poses a huge threat to agroecosystems, but the distribution characteristics of MPs in different types of farmland are still largely unknown. In this work, samples from six land-use types were collected from Chinese farmlands in five provinces. It was found that MP abundances were in the range of 2783-6366 items/kg in all samples. MP distribution results showed that over 80% of particles were less than 1 mm, and that MP sizes ranging between 0.02 and 0.2 mm represented the greatest proportion. The particle shape classified as fragment (with edges and angular) was the most frequent shape, with an abundance of approximately 54.05%. Polyethylene (PE) and polyamides (PA) were the most abundant polymers in cropped lands; 20.88% and 20.31%, respectively. Statistical analyses showed that lands used for plastic mulching (mulch film and greenhouse crops) had a significantly higher particle abundance, hence identifying plastic mulching as a major contributor to MP pollution in agricultural lands. Furthermore, paddy lands had a significantly higher MP abundance than wheat lands. Variation analyses of MP characteristics revealed that cereal crop farmlands (wheat, paddy land) were more likely to contain fibrous shapes and large MP particles (1-5 mm). Economically important tree lands (orchards, woodlands) were likely to contain fragment shapes and pony-size MPs (0.02-0.2 mm). In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites doped with nitrogen (N), sulfur (S) and transitional metal (Ni, Co, Fe) were synthesized by using a simple one-step in-situ hydrothermal approach. Electrochemical characterization showed that rGO-NS-Ni was the most prominent catalyst for glucose oxidation. The current density of the direct glucose alkaline fuel cell (DGAFC) with rGO-NS-Ni as the anode catalyst reached 148.0 mA/cm 2 , which was 40.82% higher than the blank group. The DGAFC exhibited a maximum power density of 48 W/m 2 , which was more than 2.08 folds than that of blank group. The catalyst was further characterized by SEM, XPS and Raman. It was speculated that the boosted performance was due to the synergistic effect of N, S-doped rGO and the metallic redox couples, (Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ , Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ), which created more active sites and accelerated electron transfer. This research can provide insights for the development of environmental benign catalysts and promote the application of the DGAFCs.

Microplastics (MPs) have become a global environmental concern while soil plastic pollution has been largely overlooked. In view of the severe antibiotic contamination in arable soils owing to land application of sewage sludge and animal manure, the invasion of MPs along with antibiotics may pose an unpredictable threat to soil microbial communities and ecological health. In this work, polyethylene MPs and ciprofloxacin (CIP) were applied to a soil microcosm to investigate the CIP degradation behavior and their combined effects on soil microbial communities. Compared with that of the individual amendment of CIP, the co-amendment of CIP and MPs reduced the CIP degradation efficiency during the 35 d cultivation period. In addition, the high-throughput sequencing results illustrated that the combined loading of MPs and CIP in soil significantly decreased the microbial diversity compared with that of individual contamination. As for the community structure, the microbial compositions at the phylum level were consistent among all treatments, and the most dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi. At the genus level, only one genus, namely Arthrobacter, was remarkably changed in the CIP-amended soil compared with that in the blank control, but four genera were significantly altered in the MPs-CIP co-amended soil. Serratia and Achromobacter were abundant in the combined polluted soil, which might have been involved in accelerated depletion of soil total nitrogen based on redundancy analysis. Genome engineering and synthetic biology as an emerging interdisciplinary tool have opened a new era for energy research as well as life science. In this study, bibliometric and content analysis were conducted to clarify research characteristics and research trends in this field. Our result revealed that USA, China, UK, Germany, and France were the main contributing countries, and USA was in a leading position in international cooperation. The CRISPR-Cas9 system has been manipulated to develop microorganisms with improved characteristics and tolerance, and is at the forefront of research and practice. In addition, design and construction of synthetic microbial communities and optimization of ecological models to meet industrial demands will become the next hotspot. Meanwhile, effective process configurations that can promote commercial-scale biofuel production should also be developed. A Gram-stain-negative, motile, aerobic and heterotrophic bacterium, designated as GYS&#95;M3H T , was isolated from marine coastal sediment sampled at Xiamen Island. Cells were rod-shaped with one polar flagellum and weakly positive for oxidase and catalase. Growth of the strain occurred at pH 6-9 (optimum, pH 7-8), at 15-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and with NaCl concentrations of 1.0-6.0 % (optimum, 2.0 %). It had highest 16S rRNA similarity (97.7 %) to Ketobacter alkanivorans GI5 T , followed by the members of the genus Alcanivorax (lower than 91.2 %). The results of phylogenetic analysis indicated that it belonged to the genus Ketobacter within the family Alcanivoracaceae . In addition, the average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain GYS&#95;M3H T and K. alkanivorans GI5 T were 71.4 and 19.7 %, respectively, indicating that strain GYS&#95;M3H T belonged to a novel species. Its genome consisted of 5 318 758 bp, with a genomic DNA G+C content of 50.0 mol%. The respiratory quinone was Q-8 and the dominant fatty acids were identified as iso-C 15 : 0 (25.4 %), C 16 : 1   ω6c/C 16 : 1   ω7 c (14.4 %) and iso-C 13 : 0 (7.2 %). The main polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Therefore, based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic results, strain GYS&#95;M3H T represents a novel species within the genus Ketobacter , for which the name Ketobacter nezhaii sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain GYS&#95;M3H T (=MCCC 1A13808 T =KCTC 72247 T ).

Aim: To investigate the expression of glucose transporter 3 (GLUT3) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 α protein (HIF-1 α ) in meningiomas and analyze the correlation between GLUT3 and HIF-1 α expression with the pathological grade of peritumoral brain edema (PTBE) of meningiomas., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed meningioma specimens from 160 patients collected from January 1, 2014, to December 1, 2017, by dividing them into a low-grade (WHO I) or high-grade (WHO II and WHO III) group. Immunohistochemical analyses were used to detect the expression level of GLUT3 and HIF-1 α in the tumor specimens., Results: The proportion of GLUT3-positive staining in tumors sized <4 cm, 4-6 cm, and>6 cm was 35.9% (37/103), 63.6% (28/44), and 53.8% (7/13), respectively ( P = 0.007). The proportion of HIF-1 α -positive staining in tumors sized <4 cm, 4-6 cm, and >6 cm was 41.7% (43/103), 68.2% (30/44), and 38.5% (5/13), respectively ( P = 0.010). The proportion of GLUT3-positive staining in the high-grade group and low-grade group was 70.8% (34/48) and 33.9% (38/112), respectively ( P < 0.001). The proportion of HIF-1 α -positive staining in the high-grade group and low-grade group was 62.5% (30/48) and 42.9% (48/112), respectively ( P = 0.023). GLUT3-positive expression in meningioma PTBE grades 0, I, II, and III was 20.3% (13/64), 41.2% (14/34), 63.6% (21/33), and 82.8% (24/29), respectively (Bonferroni-corrected, P < 0.001, α /6 = 0.008). HIF-1 α -positive expression in meningioma PTBE grades 0, I, II, and III was 34.4% (22/64), 47.1% (16/34), 54.5% (18/33), and 75.9% (22/29), respectively (Bonferroni-corrected, P = 0.003, α /6 = 0.008). Spearman's correlation analysis revealed a correlation between the expression of GLUT3 and HIF-1 α in meningiomas ( r = 0.463, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that GLUT3-positive expression, HIF-1 α -positive expression, and high pathological grade were associated with the development of PTBE ( P < 0.05)., Conclusions: GLUT3 and HIF-1 α expression in meningiomas was closely related to the tumor size, pathological grade, and PTBE. The development of microbial fuel cell (MFC) makes it possible to generate clean electricity as well as remove pollutants from wastewater. Extensive studies on MFC have focused on structural design and performance optimization, and tremendous advances have been made in these fields. However, there is still a lack of systematic analysis on biocatalysts used in MFCs, especially when it comes to pollutant removal and simultaneous energy recovery. In this review, we aim to provide an update on MFC-based wastewater treatment and energy harvesting research, and analyze various biocatalysts used in MFCs and their underlying mechanisms in pollutant removal as well as energy recovery from wastewater. Metal nitrides are broadly applicable in the field of electrochemistry due to their excellent electrical properties. In this study, a 3D nanostructured Ni 3 N-Co 3 N catalyst was prepared by using a versatile urea glass method, and was tested as an anode catalyst for a glucose fuel cell. The synthesized Ni 3 N-Co 3 N exhibits uniform particle dispersion in structure, morphology, and composition, and has a interpenetrating three-dimensional network structure. Notably, the Ni 3 N-Co 3 N significantly improved the catalytic activity of glucose oxidation compared to Ni 3 N, Co 3 N, and conventional activated carbon electrodes. The superior electrochemical performance could be attributed to its porous structure and unique properties, which provided a fast transport network for charge and mass transfer as well as good synergetic effect. The glucose fuel cell equipped with a Ni 3 N-Co 3 N anode achieved 30.89 W m -2 power and 97.66 A m -2 current densities at room temperature.
