Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) images can provide information about anatomical structures and pathological processes in ancient skulls. A previous study on the teeth and jaws of 171 individuals in a late Swedish Viking age population, dating around the 10 th -12 th century made clinical examinations that included intraoral radiographs. Current explorative study examined a subset of this population using CT with the aim to investigate if this method could provide additional information about the studied subjects., Materials and Method: The skulls of 15 Viking-era individuals were examined with CT. Two specialists in oral and maxillofacial radiology and one general dentist examined the images together, performing the diagnostics and interpretated the results., Results: Findings included signs of pathological conditions of the teeth; of the alveolar, mandibular, maxillary and auricular bone; and of the paranasal sinuses and temporomandibular joints. These findings indicated the presence of both clinically detectable conditions, such as dental caries, periodontal disease, periapical destructions and remodelling of the caput mandibulae, but also additional findings such as sclerotization of the mastoid process, infection-induced periosteal bone deposition, and signs of sinusitis., Conclusion: CT investigation of skeletal remains from an early Christian community in the Viking era in Sweden indicated that the population suffered from numerous orofacial pathologies, including dental disease, sinusitis, otitis, and various infections. The current study, using CT as an investigation method of skeletal remains, indicated that this method could identify conditions that might be difficult to find through ocular inspection. Conclusively, CT is suggested to be an important non-invasive method when used in combination with other examination methods, possibly providing additional information about archeological human remains. Background: Accurate assessment of fluid volume and hydration status is essential in many disease states, including patients with chronic kidney disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of a wearable continuous bioimpedance sensor to detect changes in fluid volume in patients undergoing regular hemodialysis (HD)., Methods: 31 patients with end-stage renal disease were enrolled and monitored with a sensor patch (Re:Balans ® ) on the upper back through two consecutive HD sessions and the interdialytic period between. The extracellular resistance R E was calculated from multi-frequency bioimpedance measurements and was hypothesized to correlate with the amount of extracted fluid during dialysis., Results: Only HD sessions with a positive net fluid extraction were included in the primary analysis. Participants had an increase of 7.5 ± 4.3 Ω (Ohm) in R E during the first HD and 6.2 ± 2.3 Ω during the second HD, and a fluid extraction (ultrafiltration (UF) volume) of 1.5 ± 0.8 L and 1.2 ± 0.6 L, respectively. The relative change in R E during HD correlated strongly with UF volume (r = 0.82, p < 0.001). During the interdialytic period, the patients had a mean decrease in R E of 6.0 ± 3.5 Ω. Longitudinal changes in R E (%) and body weight (kg) over the entire study period was negatively correlated (r = -0.61 p < 0.001). Longitudinal changes in blood samples and cardiovascular changes were also in agreement with changes in weight and R E ., Conclusions: The results of this clinical investigation indicate that the investigational device is capable of tracking both rapid and gradual changes in hydration status in patients undergoing regular HD., Competing Interests: Declarations. Objectives: To evaluate at which thickness marginal bone becomes visible to the observer on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and how reconstruction technique and viewing mode affect assessment., Materials and Methods: Fourteen anterior teeth from six human mandibles were examined with two CBCT resolution protocols: standard- and high-resolution. Distance from the cementoenamel junction to the visible marginal bone level (MBL) was measured in three groups of reconstructed CBCT images: multiplanar reformation (MPR) with grey scale, MPR with inverted grey scale, and 3D rendering. These measurements were used to identify the bone level where marginal bone width should be measured on histological photographs of sliced teeth. Gold standards comprised measurements of bone thickness at the superior MBL on histological photographs., Results: MPR grey scale images exposed at high-resolution settings yielded highest validity: bone widths of 0.173 mm (buccal) and 0.356 mm (lingual) were necessary for visibility on a CBCT image. 3D-rendered lingual surfaces exposed with high-resolution settings had lowest validity. Intra-observer agreement for all CBCT and histological measurements was high., Conclusion: The best CBCT resolution protocol, reconstruction technique, and viewing mode for analyzing buccal and lingual surfaces of the alveolar bone margin are images exposed with a high-resolution protocol, reconstructed using MPR, and viewed in grey scale. Objectives: To assess skeletal and dental effects and evaluate possible side effects of maxillary expansion with two different appliances, directly after expansion and 1 year postexpansion., Materials and Methods: Forty-two patients with unilateral posterior crossbite (mean 9.5 ± 0.9 years) were randomized to either rapid maxillary expansion (RME) banded on the deciduous second molars and bonded to the primary canines or slow expansion with quad helix (QH) on the permanent first molars. Cone-beam computed tomography records were taken at baseline, directly after correction of the posterior crossbite and at follow-up 1 year after expansion., Results: All patients were analyzed. RME opened the midpalatal suture more anteriorly and inferiorly (mean 4.1 mm) and less posteriorly and superiorly (mean 1.0 mm). No effect on midpalatal suture could be shown in the QH group after expansion, P < .001. Buccal bone width had significantly decreased (P < .001) in the QH group compared with the RME group. Buccal fenestrations and root resorption on the left first molar had a higher prevalence directly after expansion finished in the QH group (P = .0086, P = .013) but were not significant at 1-year follow-up (P = .11, P = .22)., Conclusions: Opening of the suture with RME was more anterior and inferior, and the QH did not open the midpalatal suture at all. Introduction: Prospective studies assessing the relation between endodontic inflammatory disease and subsequent cardiovascular events are few. The present aim was to explore associations between endodontic variables and future cardiovascular events in patients with myocardial infarction and matched controls participating in the PAROKRANK (Periodontitis and Its Relation to Coronary Artery Disease) study., Methods: Eight-hundred five patients hospitalized for a first myocardial infarction and 805 controls were recruited between 2010 and 2014. Signs of endodontic inflammatory disease were assessed in panoramic radiographs taken at baseline. Mortality and morbidity data during the approximately 8 years of follow up were obtained from national registries. The risk for future cardiovascular events (first of mortality and nonfatal myocardial infarction, stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure) was analyzed with the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression adjusted for the following confounders: sex, age, smoking, myocardial infarction, diabetes, education, marital status, family history of cardiovascular disease, and marginal periodontitis., Results: In total, 285 future events were observed during the follow-up period. Unadjusted analyses revealed that ≥1 root-filled tooth increased the risk of a future event. After adjustment, the number of remaining teeth and non-root-filled teeth decreased the risk of future events, whereas a higher Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth score increased the risk and ≥1 primary apical periodontitis decreased the risk of suffering cardiovascular events. A higher Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth score and decayed teeth increased the risk of all-cause mortality., Conclusions: Tooth loss is a strong indicator of an increased risk for future cardiovascular events. Root-filled teeth seem of limited value as a risk indicator when accounting for other risk factors. The development of highly efficient and stable visible-light-driven photocatalysts for the removal of herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from water is still a challenge. In this work, Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) materials with different morphology were successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal method by altering the solvent. The morphology of the BMO material is mainly influenced by the solvent used in the synthesis (H 2 O, ethanol, and ethylene glycol or their mixtures) and to a lesser extent by subsequent thermal annealing. BMO with aggregated spheres and nanoplate-like structures hydrothermally synthesized in ethylene glycol (EG) and subsequently calcined at 400 °C (BMO-400 (EG)) showed the highest adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity compared to other synthesized morphologies. Complete degradation of 2,4-D on BMO upon irradiation with a blue light-emitting diode (LED, λ max = 467 nm) was reached within 150 min, resulting in 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as the main degradation product. Holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (⋅O 2 - ) are assumed to be the reactive species observed for the rapid conversion of 2,4-D to 2,4-DCP. The addition of H 2 O 2 to the reaction mixture not only accelerates the degradation of 2,4-DCP but also significantly reduces the total organic carbon (TOC) content, indicating that hydroxyl radicals are crucial for the rapid mineralization of 2,4-D. Under optimal conditions, the TOC value was reduced by 84.5% within 180 min using BMO-400 (EG) and H 2 O 2 . The improved degradation performance of BMO-400 (EG) can be attributed to its particular morphology leading to lower charge transfer resistance, higher electron-hole separation, and larger specific surface area.

Improving the selectivity in the oxidative coupling of methane to ethane/ethylene poses a significant challenge for commercialization. The required improvements are hampered by the uncertainties associated with the reaction mechanism due to its complexity. Herein, we report about 90 % selectivity to the target products at 11 % methane conversion over Gd 2 O 3 -based catalysts at 700 °C using N 2 O as the oxidant. Sophisticated kinetic studies have suggested the nature of adsorbed oxygen species and their binding strength as key parameters for undesired methane oxidation to carbon oxides. Introduction: Lateral ankle sprain is the most common ankle injury and up to 40% of those who sustain a lateral ankle sprain will develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). The aim of this study was to explore the thoughts and expectations of CAI-patients concerning their condition and expectations of care in an orthopedic setting. ., Study Design: Qualitative study., Methods: Nine semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted with CAI-patients who were referred to an orthopedic setting. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using systematic text condensation with an inductive goal free approach. ., Results: Seven themes emerged. The themes were Injury history and symptoms (Lateral ankle sprain during sport, pain and instability), Information from health professional (conflicting information about management and prognosis), Management (mental and physical challenges), Expectation and hope (explanation of symptoms, prognosis and imaging to provide clarification of condition), Activity and participation (restriction in sport and daily life and feelings of uncertainty), Support (support from family/friends) and Identity (low ability to participate in sport and social life result in loss of identity). ., Conclusion: The impact of CAI exceeds an experience of pain and instability. Objectives: Poor oral health and dental infections can jeopardize medical treatment and be life-threatening. Due to this, patients with head and neck malignancies, generalized tumor spread, organ transplant, or severe infection are referred for a clinical oral and radiographic examination. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic agreement of three radiographic modalities: intraoral radiographs (IO), panoramic radiographs (PX), and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for diagnosis of dental diseases., Materials and Methods: Three hundred patients were examined with IO, PX, and CBCT. Periapical lesions, marginal bone level, and caries lesions were diagnosed separately by four oral radiologists. All observers also assessed six teeth in 30 randomly selected patients at two different occasions. Kappa values and percent agreement were calculated., Results: The highest Kappa value and percent agreement were for diagnosing periapical lesions (0.76, 97.7%), and for the assessment of marginal bone level, it varied between 0.58 and 0.60 (87.8-89.3%). In CBCT, only 44.4% of all teeth were assessable for caries (Kappa 0.68, 93.4%). The intra-observer agreement, for all modalities and diagnoses, showed Kappa values between 0.5 and 0.93 and inter-observer agreement varied from 0.51 to 0.87., Conclusions: CBCT was an alternative to IO in diagnosing periapical lesions. Both modalities found the same healthy teeth in 93.8%. All modalities were performed equally regarding marginal bone level. In caries diagnosis, artifacts were the major cause of fallout for CBCT., Clinical Relevance: Intraoral radiography is the first-hand choice for diagnosing dental disease. Aim: To explore associations between root filled teeth, primary and secondary apical periodontitis, and levels of inflammatory markers in blood from patients with a first myocardial infarction and matched controls., Methodology: Between May 2010 and February 2014, 805 patients with a first myocardial infarction and 805 controls, matched for sex, age, and postal code area, were recruited to the multicentre case-control study PAROKRANK (periodontitis and its relation to coronary artery disease). All participants underwent a physical and oral examination, as well as blood sampling. Using panoramic radiography, root filled teeth, primary apical periodontitis, and secondary apical periodontitis were assessed by three independent observers. Blood samples were analysed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method for the following inflammatory markers: interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12p70, tumour necrosis factor-α, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). Additionally, white blood cell count and plasma-fibrinogen were analysed. Associations between endodontic variables and the levels of inflammatory markers were statistically analysed with Mann-Whitney U-test and Spearman correlation, adjusted for confounding effects of baseline factors (sex, age, myocardial infarction, current smoking, diabetes, family history of cardiovascular disease, education, marital status, and periodontal disease)., Results: Mean age of the cohort was 62 years, and 81% were males. Root fillings were present in 8.4% of the 39 978 examined teeth and were associated with higher levels of hsCRP, fibrinogen, and leukocyte count, but lower levels of IL-2 and IL-12p70. After adjusting for confounders, root filled teeth remained associated with higher levels of fibrinogen, but lower levels of IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-12p70. Primary apical periodontitis was found in 1.2% of non-root filled teeth and associated with higher levels of IL-8 (correlation 0.06, p = .025). Secondary apical periodontitis was found in 29.6% of root filled teeth but did not relate to the levels of any of the inflammatory markers., Conclusions: This study supports the notion that inflammation at the periapex is more than a local process and that systemic influences cannot be disregarded. Whether the observed alterations in plasma levels of inflammatory markers have any dismal effects on systemic health is presently unknown but, considering the present results, in demand of further investigation., (© 2023 The Authors. In a late Swedish Viking Age population dating from around 10th-12th century AD, the prevalence, distribution and location of dental caries were studied. Tooth wear, other dental pathology and anatomical variations were identified and recorded clinically and radiographically. A total of 3293 teeth were analyzed from 171 individuals with complete and partial dentitions, of which 133 were permanent and 38 deciduous/mixed dentition. The dentitions were studied clinically, using a dental probe under a strong light source, and radiographs were taken for 18 of the individuals to verify and complement the clinical caries registration. Almost half the population, 83 of 171 individuals (49%), had at least one carious lesion. All individuals with deciduous or mixed dentitions were caries-free. The number of teeth affected by caries among adults was 424 (13%) and the surface most susceptible to caries was the root surface. The tooth most commonly affected by caries was the first mandibular molar. Other findings included apical infections, which were detected clinically in 4% of the teeth, and one case of filed front teeth. The findings gave a unique understanding of life and death in this early Christian Viking community and indicated that it was common to suffer from dental caries, tooth loss, infections of dental origin and tooth pain. A protocol for efficient N -alkylation of benzamides with alcohols in the presence of cobalt-nanocatalysts is described. Key to the success of this general methodology is the use of highly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles supported on carbon, which are obtained from the pyrolysis of cobalt(ii) acetate and o -phenylenediamine as a ligand at suitable temperatures. The catalytic material shows a broad substrate scope and good tolerance to functional groups. Apart from the synthesis of a variety of secondary amides (>45 products), the catalyst allows for the conversion of more challenging aliphatic alcohols and amides, including biobased and macromolecular amides. Catalytic hydrogenations are important and widely applied processes for the reduction of organic compounds both in academic laboratories and in industry. To perform these reactions in sustainable and practical manner, the development and applicability of non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts is crucial. Here, we report highly active and air-stable nickel nanoparticles supported on mesoporous silica (MCM-41) as a general and selective hydrogenation catalyst. This catalytic system allows for the hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds, nitroarenes, N-heterocycles, and unsaturated carbon─carbon bonds in good to excellent selectivity under very mild conditions (room temperature to 80°C, 2 to 10 bar H 2 ). Furthermore, the optimal nickel/meso-silicon dioxide catalyst is reusable (4 cycles) without loss of its catalytic activity.

Purpose: To explore a weighted composite of endodontic inflammatory disease (EID) as a risk factor for suffering a first myocardial infarction (MI)., Materials and Methods: Seven tooth-specific conditions related to EID were assessed radiographically in 797 patients suffering a first MI and 796 controls. A weighted composite of EID was calculated as the sum of all teeth, excluding third molars. Using maximum likelihood estimation, each condition was assigned a specific weight. With multivariable conditional regression, EID variables, periodontal disease, and missing teeth were assessed as predictors of a first MI., Results: Periodontal disease (OR 1.38; 95% CI 1.13-1.69, p = 0.0016) and missing teeth (OR 1.03; 95% CI 1.002-1.05, p = 0.034) were related to the risk of a first MI, while none of the EID-related conditions individually were. However, when assessed as an aggregate, a weighted composite of EID (OR 1.97; 95% CI 1.23-3.17, p = 0.0050) and periodontal disease (OR 1.34; 95% CI 1.09-1.63, p = 0.0046) was associated with the risk of MI. Missing teeth did not remain a statistically significant predictor of MI in the final model., Conclusions: A weighted composite of EID was associated with the risk of MI and strengthens the evidence for a direct connection between oral inflammatory diseases and cardiovascular disorders.

Partial-thickness thermal burn wounds are characterized by a prolonged inflammatory response, oxidative stress, tissue damage, and secondary necrosis. An optimal dressing for burn wounds would reduce inflammation and oxidative stress while providing a moist, absorbent, and protective cover. We have developed an extract from unfertilized salmon roe containing components with potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, called HTX. HTX has been combined with alginate from brown algae and nanocellulose from tunicates, and 3D printed into a solid hydrogel wound dressing called Collex. Here, Collex was tested on partial thickness burn wounds in Göttingen minipigs compared to Jelonet, and a variant of Collex without HTX. We found that dermal treatment of burn wounds with Collex resulted in accelerated healing at a majority of measured points over 23 days, compared to treatment with Jelonet. In comparison to Collex without HTX, Collex enhanced healing in the first week after trauma where wound progression was pronounced. Notably, Collex reduced the inflammatory response in the early post-injury phase. The anti-inflammatory response of Collex was investigated in more detail on activated M1 macrophages. We found that Collex, as well as HTX alone, significantly reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory interleukin-1β as well as intracellular levels of oxidative stress. The results from this study indicate that Collex is a potent dressing for the treatment of burn wounds, with the anti-inflammatory effect of HTX beneficial in the initial phase, and the moist qualities of the hydrogel favorable both in the initial and the proceeding proliferative phase of wound healing., (© The Author(s) 2023. Bone healing is a complex process orchestrated by various factors, such as mechanical, chemical and electrical cues. Creating synthetic biomaterials that combine several of these factors leading to tailored and controlled tissue regeneration, is the goal of scientists worldwide. Among those factors is piezoelectricity which creates a physiological electrical microenvironment that plays an important role in stimulating bone cells and fostering bone regeneration. However, only a limited number of studies have addressed the potential of combining piezoelectric biomaterials with state-of-the-art fabrication methods to fabricate tailored scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Here, we present an approach that takes advantage of modern additive manufacturing techniques to create macroporous biomaterial scaffolds based on a piezoelectric and bioactive ceramic-crystallised glass composite. Using binder jetting, scaffolds made of barium titanate and 45S5 bioactive glass are fabricated and extensively characterised with respect to their physical and functional properties. The 3D-printed ceramic-crystallised glass composite scaffolds show both suitable mechanical strength and bioactive behaviour, as represented by the accumulation of bone-like calcium phosphate on the surface. Piezoelectric scaffolds that mimic or even surpass bone with piezoelectric constants ranging from 1 to 21 pC/N are achieved, depending on the composition of the composite. Using MC3T3-E1 osteoblast precursor cells, the scaffolds show high cytocompatibility coupled with cell attachment and proliferation, rendering the barium titanate/45S5 ceramic-crystallised glass composites promising candidates for bone tissue engineering., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2023 The Authors.)

Current standard wound care involves dressings that provide moisture and protection; however, dressings providing active healing are still scarce and expensive. We aimed to develop an ecologically sustainable 3D printed bioactive hydrogel-based topical wound dressing targeting healing of hard-to-heal wounds, such as chronic or burn wounds, which are low on exudate. To this end, we developed a formulation composed of renewable marine components; purified extract from unfertilized salmon roe (heat-treated X, HTX), alginate from brown seaweed, and nanocellulose from tunicates. HTX is believed to facilitate the wound healing process. The components were successfully formulated into a 3D printable ink that was used to create a hydrogel lattice structure. The 3D printed hydrogel showed a HTX release profile enhancing pro-collagen I alpha 1 production in cell culture with potential of promoting wound closure rates. The dressing has recently been tested on burn wounds in Göttingen minipigs and shows accelerated wound closure and reduced inflammation. This paper describes the dressings development, mechanical properties, bioactivity, and safety.

Objectives: Exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) is characterized by an increase in pain threshold following acute exercise. EIH is reduced in some individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain, although the mechanisms are unknown. It has been hypothesized that this may relate to whether exercises are performed in painful or non-painful body regions. The primary aim of this randomized experimental crossover study was to investigate whether the presence of pain per se in the exercising muscles reduced the local EIH response. The secondary aim was to investigate if EIH responses were also reduced in non-exercising remote muscles., Methods: Pain-free women (n=34) participated in three separate sessions. In session 1, the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) for a single legged isometric knee extension exercise was determined. In sessions 2 and 3, pressure pain thresholds (PPT) were assessed at the thigh and shoulder muscles before and after a 3-min exercise at 30 % of MVC. Exercises were performed with or without thigh muscle pain, which was induced by either a painful injection (hypertonic saline, 5.8 %) or a non-painful injection (isotonic saline, 0.9 %) into the thigh muscle. Muscle pain intensity was assessed with an 11-point numerical rating scale (NRS) at baseline, after injections, during and after exercises., Results: PPTs increased at thigh and shoulder muscles after exercise with painful (14.0-24.9 %) and non-painful (14.3-19.5 %) injections and no significant between-injection EIH differences were observed (p>0.30). Objectives: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate long-term clinical and radiologic performance of anodized surface implants supporting single implant restorations., Materials and Methods: Patients who received at least one anodized surface implant for a single-tooth restoration between 2003 and 2004 in the Brånemark clinic (Göteborg, Sweden) were included in the study. The assessed outcomes included implant survival, biological and technical complications, as well as marginal bone levels (MBL) based on radiographs. Baseline data on patient demographics, implant placement, and surgery details were also collected. The cumulative survival rate (CSR) was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis., Results: The study included 97 patients with 129 implants. Mean patient age at the time of implant placement was 31.7 ± 16.4 years. All implants were placed in a two-stage approach with delayed loading. The last follow-up visit was on average 13.4 ± 4.8 years after implant insertion. Three implants failed, yielding the implant-level 15-year CSR of 97.4%. Majority of the implants had no biological (70.5%) nor technical (81.4%) complications. The mean MBL was -1.0 ± 0.7 mm (n = 101) at prosthetic placement and -1.8 ± 1.0 mm (n = 80) at the last follow-up, while the mean marginal bone loss (MBL) from prosthetic placement to last follow-up was 0.6 ± 1.1 mm (n = 65)., Conclusions: Moderately rough anodized implants have shown favorable long-term outcomessingle-tooth indication, with high survival and a low rate of technical complications. The selective hydrogenation of benzofurans in the presence of a heterogeneous non-noble metal catalyst is reported. The developed optimal catalytic material consists of cobalt-cobalt oxide core-shell nanoparticles supported on silica, which has been prepared by the immobilization and pyrolysis of cobalt-DABCO-citric acid complex on silica under argon at 800 °C. This novel catalyst allows for the selective hydrogenation of simple and functionalized benzofurans to 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans as well as related heterocycles. The versatility of the reported protocol is showcased by the reduction of selected drugs and deuteration of heterocycles. Objectives: To investigate the validity and reliability of marginal bone level measurements on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of thin bony structures using various reconstruction techniques, two image resolutions, and two viewing modes., Materials and Methods: CBCT and histologic measurements of the buccal and lingual aspects of 16 anterior mandibular teeth from 6 human specimens were compared. Multiplanar (MPR) and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions, standard and high resolutions, and gray scale and inverted gray scale viewing modes were assessed., Results: Validity of radiologic and histologic comparisons were highest using the standard protocol, MPR, and the inverted gray scale viewing mode (mean difference = 0.02 mm) and lowest using a high-resolution protocol and 3D-rendered images (mean difference = 1.10 mm). Mean differences were significant (P < .05) at the lingual surfaces for both reconstructions, viewing modes (MPR windows), and resolutions., Conclusions: Varying the reconstruction technique and viewing mode does not improve the observer's ability to visualize thin bony structures in the anterior mandibular region. The use of 3D-reconstructed images should be avoided when thin cortical borders are suspected. The small difference when using a high-resolution protocol is unjustified due to the higher radiation dose required. Objective: The aim of the study is to investigate the labor market participation of patients with concurrent substance use and mental health disorder before treatment, as well as the strength of the barriers to re-enter the labor market., Methods: The study population is composed of individuals with concurrent substance use and mental health disorder at a psychiatric unit in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016. Alkali metal promoters have been widely employed for preparation of heterogeneous catalysts used in many industrially important reactions. However, the fundamentals of their effects are usually difficult to access. Herein, we unravel mechanistic and kinetic aspects of the role of alkali metals in CO 2 hydrogenation over Fe-based catalysts through state-of-the-art characterization techniques, spatially resolved steady-state and transient kinetic analyses. The promoters affect electronic properties of iron in iron carbides. These carbide characteristics determine catalyst ability to activate H 2 , CO and CO 2 . The Allen scale electronegativity of alkali metal promoter was successfully correlated with the rates of CO 2 hydrogenation to higher hydrocarbons and CH 4 as well as with the rate constants of individual steps of CO or CO 2 activation. Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of bone-level assessments using either cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), intra-oral peri-apical (PA) radiographs or histology following reconstructive treatment of experimental peri-implantitis., Materials and Methods: Six Labrador dogs were used. Experimental peri-implantitis was induced 3 months after implant placement. Surgical treatment of peri-implantitis was performed and peri-implant defects were allocated to one of four treatment categories; no augmentation, bone graft materials with or without a barrier membrane. Six months later, intra-oral PA radiographs and block biopsies from all implants sites were obtained. Marginal bone levels (MBLs) were measured using PA radiographs, CBCT and histology., Results: Significant correlations of MBL assessments were observed between the three methods. The measurements in PA radiographs consistently resulted in an overestimation of the bone level of about 0.3-0.4 mm. The agreement between the methods was not influenced by the use of bone substitute materials in the management of the osseous defects., Conclusions: Although MBL assessments obtained from PA radiographs showed an overestimation compared to MBL assessments on corresponding CBCT images and histological sections, PA radiographs can be considered a reliable technique for peri-implant bone-level evaluations following reconstructive surgical therapy of experimental peri-implantitis., (© 2022 The Authors. Isotope labelling, particularly deuteration, is an important tool for the development of new drugs, specifically for identification and quantification of metabolites. For this purpose, many efficient methodologies have been developed that allow for the small-scale synthesis of selectively deuterated compounds. Due to the development of deuterated compounds as active drug ingredients, there is a growing interest in scalable methods for deuteration. The development of methodologies for large-scale deuterium labelling in industrial settings requires technologies that are reliable, robust and scalable. Here we show that a nanostructured iron catalyst, prepared by combining cellulose with abundant iron salts, permits the selective deuteration of (hetero)arenes including anilines, phenols, indoles and other heterocycles, using inexpensive D 2 O under hydrogen pressure. This methodology represents an easily scalable deuteration (demonstrated by the synthesis of deuterium-containing products on the kilogram scale) and the air- and water-stable catalyst enables efficient labelling in a straightforward manner with high quality control., (© 2022. Aim: To study the association between endodontic inflammatory disease and a first myocardial infarction (MI)., Methodology: The study comprised 805 patients with recent experience of a first MI, each gender, age and geographically matched with a control. Panoramic radiographs were available for 797 patients and 796 controls. Endodontic inflammatory disease was assessed radiographically. The sum of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) was calculated, and the number of root filled teeth and teeth with periapical lesions were recorded. The associated risk of a first MI was expressed as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), unadjusted and adjusted for confounders (family history of cardiovascular disease, smoking habits, marital status, education and diabetes)., Results: Patients who had suffered a first MI had higher DMFT (mean 22.5 vs. 21.9, p = .013) and more missing teeth (mean 7.5 vs. 6.3; p < .0001) than the healthy controls. The number of missing teeth was associated with an increased risk of a first MI (adjusted OR 1.04; CI 1.02-1.06). Conversely, decay-free, filled teeth were associated with decreased risk (adjusted OR 0.98; CI 0.96-1.00). Analysis based on age disclosed the following variables to be associated with an increased risk of a first MI: number of decayed teeth (adjusted OR 1.18; CI 1.02-1.37, in patients <60 years), any primary periapical lesion (adjusted OR 1.57; CI 1.08-2.29, in patients <65 years) and the proportion of root filled teeth (adjusted OR 1.18; CI 1.03-1.36, in patients ≥65 years)., Conclusions: More missing teeth was independently associated with an increased risk of a first MI. Background: Underwater rugby is a team sport where players try to score points with a negatively buoyant ball while submerged in a swimming pool. Reports of syncope incidents at the Swedish Championships led to us to investigate end-tidal oxygen and carbon dioxide levels during simulated match play., Methods: Eight male underwater rugby club players of varying experience participated. Repetitive measurements were made while players were defending during simulated match play. Each time a player surfaced they exhaled through a mouthpiece connected to a flow meter and a gas analyzer to measure tidal volume, PETO2 and PETCO2., Results: Measurements were made over 12 dives, with an average dive duration of 18.5 seconds. The mean maximal PETCO2 across the eight participants was 10.0 kPa (~75 mmHg) (range, 9.1-11.7 [~68-88]). The corresponding mean minimum PETO2 was 7.6 kPa (~57 mmHg) (6.3-10.4 [~47-78)). PETCO2 drifted upward, with the mean upward change from the first to last dive for each participant being +1.8 (~13.5 mmHg) (SD 1.74) kPa. Objectives: To compare treatment time, patients' perceptions during orthodontic treatment, dental fear and side effects, between open and closed surgical exposures in patients with palatally displaced canines (PDCs)., Trial Design: Multicentre, randomized controlled trial, with random 1:1 allocation of two parallel groups., Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty patients from three different orthodontic centres were randomized into one of the two intervention arms, open or closed surgical exposure. Both techniques had mucoperiosteal flaps raised and bone removed above the PDCs. In open exposure, tissue was removed above the canine, and glass ionomer - reaching above soft tissue - was built on the crown. The canine was then left to erupt spontaneously, prior to orthodontic alignment. At closed exposure, a chain was bonded to the canine and orthodontic traction was applied under the mucosa until eruption. Orthodontic alignment of the canines was undertaken after eruption into the oral cavity, with fixed appliances in both groups. All participants were treated according to intention to treat (ITT)., Blinding: Due to the nature of this trial, only outcome assessors could be blinded to the intervention group., Results: One hundred and seventeen patients completed the trial. All PDCs were successfully aligned. Total treatment time was equal in the two techniques, mean difference -0.1 months (95% CI -3.2 to 2.9, P = 0.93). The closed group experienced more pain and discomfort during the active orthodontic traction. Dental fear, root resorption and periodontal status did not show any clinically significant differences between the groups., Generalizability: Results of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) can be generalized only to a similar population aged 9-16 years, if exclusion criteria are met., Conclusion: The closed exposure group experienced more pain and discomfort mostly during active orthodontic traction. Background: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the assessment of trabecular bone patterns in dental radiographs, for fracture risk prediction, compared with the current diagnostic methods., Methods: The PRISMA guidelines were followed. According to predefined inclusion criteria (PICO), literature searches were focussed on published studies with analyses of trabecular bone patterns on intraoral and/or in panoramic radiographs, compared with Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and/or Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX), with the outcomes; fracture and/or sensitivity and specificity for osteoporosis prediction. The included studies were quality-assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool and the certainties of evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach., Results: The literature searches identified 2913 articles, whereas three were found to meet the inclusion criteria. Two longitudinal cohort studies evaluated the use of trabecular bone patterns to predict bone fractures. In one of the studies, the relative risk of fracture was significantly higher for women with sparse bone pattern, identified by visual assessment of dental radiographs, and in the other study by digital software assessment. Visual assessment in the second study did not show significant results. The cross-sectional study of digital analyses of trabecular bone patterns in relation to osteoporosis reported a sensitivity of 0.70 and a specificity of 0.69., Conclusion: Based on low certainty of evidence, trabecular bone evaluation on dental radiographs may predict fractures in adults without a prior diagnosis of osteoporosis, and based on very low certainty of evidence, it is uncertain whether digital image analyses of trabecular bone can predict osteoporosis.

Objective: To determine whether calibration improves observer reliability when assessing DMFT-score, root-filled teeth and periapical lesions on panoramic radiographs., Material and Methods: A sample of 100 panoramic radiographs was selected from a cohort of myocardial infarction patients ( n  = 797) and matched controls ( n  = 796). The following variables were assessed: DMFT-score, remaining teeth, root-filled teeth and periapical lesions. Two specialists, an endodontist and a radiologist, served as reference examiners and undertook two separate assessments. Disagreement cases were jointly assessed and the final results were used as the reference standard. Three observers undertook three separate assessments, the first without prior training, the second after calibration against the reference standard and the third with the sample concealed in the complete material. Statistical analysis was made with Wilcoxon Signed rank test and Sign test. Agreement was calculated as Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) (95% CI) and Weighted Kappa ( κ ) (95% CI)., Results: Periapical lesions disclosed high inter-observer variability for the reference examiners and diverged significantly between the observers and the reference standard. For the reference examiners, inter-observer agreement was κ  = 0.53. The observers, in their first assessments had κ values ranging from 0.22 to 0.60 in relation to the reference standard. Following calibration, the κ values increased, ranging from 0.59 to 0.80. For the third assessment, the κ values ranged from 0.54 to 0.75. DMFT-score, remaining teeth and root-filled teeth disclosed high reliability throughout all assessments (ICC = 0.88-0.98 and κ  = 0.98-0.99)., Conclusions: DMFT-score, remaining teeth and root-filled teeth can be reliably assessed on panoramic radiographs. Calibration against a reference standard improves observer reliability in the detection of periapical lesions.

The production of regenerated cellulosic fibres, such as viscose, modal and lyocell, is based mainly on the use of dissolving wood pulp as raw material. Enzymatic processes are an excellent alternative to conventional chemical routes in the production of dissolving pulp, in terms of energy efficiency, reagent consumption and pulp yield. The two main characteristics of a dissolving pulp are the cellulose purity and the molecular weight, both of which can be controlled with the aid of enzymes. A purification process for paper-grade kraft pulp has been proposed, based on the use of xylanases in combination with hot and cold caustic extraction, without the conventional pre-hydrolysis step before kraft pulping. This enzyme aided purification allowed the production of a dissolving pulp that met the specifications for the manufacture of viscose, < 3% xylan, > 92% ISO brightness and 70% Fock's reactivity. Endoglucanases (EGs) can efficiently reduce the average molecular weight of the cellulose while simultaneously increasing the pulp reactivity for viscose production. Addressing climate change with the rising global energy usage necessitates electricity sector decarbonization by rapidly moving toward flexible and efficient off-grid renewable energy systems (RESs). This paper analyzes the wind and solar micro-grids, with batteries and pumped hydro storage for a robust off-grid RES techno-economic operation, while considering diverse multi-objective optimization cases. This research has considered the RES variable operational losses in the developed methodology and relations between different indicators are evaluated, revealing a basic understanding between them. The results reveal that the reliability index is inversely related to the oversupply index, while directly related to the system self-sufficiency index. The cost of energy is more sensitive to technical indicators rather than the storage cost and so can be used as a primary monetary index. Objectives: To evaluate and compare the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of tooth-borne (TB) and tooth-bone-borne (TBB) rapid maxillary expansion (RME)., Materials and Methods: Fifty-two consecutive patients who met the eligibility criteria were recruited and allocated to either the TB group, mean age 9.3 years [standard deviation (SD) 1.3], or the TBB group, mean age 9.5 years (SD 1.2). Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) records and plaster models were taken before (T0), directly after (T1), and 1 year after expansion (T2). Dentoalveolar and skeletal measurements were made on the CBCT images. The dental expansion was also measured on the plaster models., Randomization: Participants were randomly allocated in blocks of different sizes using the concealed allocation principle in a 1:1 ratio. The randomization list was also stratified by sex to ensure homogeneity between groups., Blinding: Due to clinical limitations, only the outcomes assessors were blinded to the groups to which the patients were allocated., Results: Skeletal expansion in the midpalatal suture and at the level of the nasal cavity was significantly higher in the TBB group. However, the magnitude of the expansion in the midpalatal suture was around 1 mm [95 per cent confidence interval (CI) 0.5-1.7, P = 0.001] more and perhaps not clinically significant. The magnitude of the expansion at the level of the nasal cavity was almost two times higher in the TBB group (95 per cent CI 0.7-2.6, P = 0.001). The dental expansion, alveolar bending, tipping of the molars, and stability 1 year post-expansion did not show any statistically significant differences between the groups. The actual direct cost of the treatment for the TBB group was approximately €300 higher than TB group., Limitations: Double blinding was not possible due to the clinical limitations., Conclusions: In young preadolescents with constricted maxilla and no signs of upper airway obstruction, it seems that conventional TB RME achieves the same clinical results with good stability 1 year post-expansion at lower cost., Trial Registration: The trial was not registered., (© The Author(s) 2020. This paper demonstrates the potential of Eu2O3 and Gd2O3 as catalysts for non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation to propene. They reveal a higher activity than the state-of-the-art bare ZrO2-based catalysts due to the higher intrinsic activity of Gdcus or Eucus in comparison with that of Zrcus (cus = coordinatively unsaturated).

Due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility and sustainable nature, regenerated cellulose (RC) films are of enormous relevance for green applications including medicinal, environmental and separation technologies. However, the processes used so far are very hazardous to the environment and health. Here, we disclose a simple, fast, environmentally friendly, nontoxic and cost-effective processing method for preparing RC films. High quality non-transparent and transparent RC films and powders can be produced by dissolution with tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide [TBPH]/[TBP] + [OH] - followed by coagulation with organic carbonates. Investigations on the coagulation mechanism revealed an extremely fast reaction between the carbonates and the hydroxide ions. The high-quality powders and films were fully characterized with respect to structure, surface morphology, permeation and selectivity. The prevalence of large bone defects is still a major problem in surgical clinics. It is, thus, not a surprise that bone-related research, especially in the field of bone tissue engineering, is a major issue in medical research. Researchers worldwide are searching for the missing link in engineering bone graft materials that mimic bones, and foster osteogenesis and bone remodeling. One approach is the combination of additive manufacturing technology with smart and additionally electrically active biomaterials. In this study, we performed a three-dimensional (3D) printing process to fabricate piezoelectric, porous barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) and hydroxyapatite (HA) composite scaffolds. The printed scaffolds indicate good cytocompatibility and cell attachment as well as bone mimicking piezoelectric properties with a piezoelectric constant of 3 pC/N. Background: No evidence is present on the risk for external apical root resorption (EARR) during orthodontic treatment (OT) of adult patients with periodontal disease., Aim: To examine EARR after OT in subjects with periodontal disease and to analyse how intrusion and change in inclination of the most proclined maxillary incisors influence EARR., Methods: The study included 50 patients with periodontal disease. Sub-gingival debridement by ultrasonic instrumentation supplemented with hand instruments was performed by experienced dental hygienist after baseline examination for all patients. For the control group, final periodontal treatment (PT) was performed before orthodontic tooth movement. For the test group patients, final PT was performed after levelling and alignment phases were finished, before the active space closure with elastic chain and/or inter-arch elastic traction for sagittal correction was started. OT was performed with a straight-wire appliance. Micro-implants or implants were used for posterior anchorage. Cone beam computed tomography examinations were performed before and after OT. EARR of all single-rooted teeth were measured. EARR of the most proclined maxillary incisor was related to intrusion and change in inclination angle., Results: EARR after OT was observed in median 80.7 per cent (interquartile range 22.02) of single-rooted teeth [mean 1.2 (standard deviation 0.44) mm]. In 82.3 per cent of teeth, EARR was 2 mm or less. Severe EARR was found in 8 per cent of patients and five maxillary incisors (less than 1 per cent of all teeth). The amount of intrusion and change in inclination angle of the most proclined maxillary central incisor influenced the extent of EARR. Mean EARR was significantly higher when OT lasted more than 18 months (P = 0.02)., Conclusions: OT in conjunction with PT in periodontal patients resulted in EARR in 81 per cent of all single-rooted teeth. Aim: To examine alveolar bone level (ABL) changes before (T1) and after (T2) orthodontic treatment (OT) in subjects with periodontal disease., Methods: The study included 50 subjects with periodontal disease. All patients received subgingival debridement following baseline examination. Control group patients received final periodontal treatment before the start of OT. For the test group patients final periodontal treatment was performed simultaneous to OT. OT was performed with a straight-wire appliance. Micro-implants or temporary crowns on implants were used for posterior anchorage when needed. ABL measurements of 3821 tooth surfaces were performed on cone beam computed tomography images., Results: No difference was observed between mean ABL at T1 and T2. ABL remained unchanged on 69 per cent of surfaces. A mean of 15.6 (SD 7.4) per cent of surfaces experienced ABL gain, and a mean of 15.1 (SD 7.5) per cent was found with ABL loss. Small significant median ABL difference was observed on mesial and distal surfaces (P < 0.001). A significant difference was found between median ABL changes on mesial/distal in comparison to buccal/lingual surfaces (P < 0.01). Significantly more buccal (17.9 %) and lingual (18.5 %) surfaces experienced ABL loss when compared with mesial (11.3 %) and distal (12.0 %) surfaces (P < 0.001). Significant difference was found in the median ABL change of intruded (0.5 (IQR 0.94) mm) and non-intruded (-0.4 (IQR 1.07) mm) maxillary incisors (P = 0.04). Significant median ABL gain was found on the lingual surface of maxillary incisors, which were retroclined more than 8.6 degree and intruded more than 1.6 mm., Conclusions: ABL changes after periodontal-orthodontic treatment in patients with periodontal disease were small. One of the big challenges in robotics is to endow agents with autonomous and adaptive capabilities. With this purpose, we embedded a cerebellum-based control system into a humanoid robot that becomes capable of handling dynamical external and internal complexity. The cerebellum is the area of the brain that coordinates and predicts the body movements throughout the body-environment interactions. Different biologically plausible cerebellar models are available in literature and have been employed for motor learning and control of simplified objects. We built the canonical cerebellar microcircuit by combining machine learning and computational neuroscience techniques. The control system is composed of the adaptive cerebellar module and a classic control method; their combination allows a fast adaptive learning and robust control of the robotic movements when external disturbances appear. The control structure is built offline, but the dynamic parameters are learned during an online-phase training. The aforementioned adaptive control system has been tested in the Neuro-robotics Platform with the virtual humanoid robot iCub. In the experiment, the robot iCub has to balance with the hand a table with a ball running on it. In contrast with previous attempts of solving this task, the proposed neural controller resulted able to quickly adapt when the internal and external conditions change. Our bio-inspired and flexible control architecture can be applied to different robotic configurations without an excessive tuning of the parameters or customization. The cerebellum-based control system is indeed able to deal with changing dynamics and interactions with the environment. Important insights regarding the relationship between the bio-inspired control system functioning and the complexity of the task to be performed are obtained.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of bone substitute materials on hard and soft tissue healing in reconstructive surgical therapy of experimental peri-implantitis at implants with different surface characteristics., Material and Methods: Six female, Labrador dogs were used. 3 months after tooth extraction, four implants with two different surface characteristics (A and B) were installed on each side of the mandible. Experimental peri-implantitis was induced 3 months later. During surgical treatment of peri-implantitis, the implants were cleaned with curettes and cotton pellets soaked in saline. The implant sites were allocated to one of four treatment categories; (a) Group C; no augmentation, (b) Group T1; bone defect filled with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (c) Group T2; bone defect filled with a biphasic bone graft material, (d) Group T3; bone defect filled as T1 and covered with a collagen membrane. Clinical and radiological examinations were performed, and biopsies were obtained and prepared for histological analysis 6 months after peri-implantitis surgery., Results: Implant B (smooth surface) sites showed significantly (a) larger radiographic bone level gain, (b) enhanced resolution of peri-implantitis lesions, and (c) larger frequency of re-osseointegration than implant A (moderately rough surface) sites. Implant B sites also showed superior preservation of the mucosal margin. Differences between bone substitute materials and control procedures were overall small with limited advantages for T1 and T2 sites., Conclusion: Healing following reconstructive surgical treatment of experimental peri-implantitis was superior around implants with a smooth surface than implants with a moderately rough surface. Nickel-based nanocatalysts were used in acceptorless, reversible dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions of N-heterocycles. Both processes were realized in the same solvent using a single catalyst, without isolation of products and workup, which makes it attractive for hydrogen storage purposes. This concept has been demonstrated in a continuous hydrogenation/dehydrogenation sequence of quinaldine with negligible loss in activity of the nickel catalyst after three hydrogen storage cycles. The scope of acceptorless dehydrogenation has been explored and control experiments suggest that hydrogen liberation is initiated via amine dehydrogenation and supports the direct alkane dehydrogenation from the partially oxidized N-heterocycles.

Hydroformylation of olefins has been studied in the presence of specific heterogeneous cobalt nanoparticles. The catalytic materials were prepared by pyrolysis of preformed cobalt complexes deposited onto different inorganic supports. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) measurements indicated a correlation of catalyst activity and cobalt leaching as well as a strong influence of the heterogeneous support on the productivity. These new, low-cost, easy-to-handle catalysts can substitute more toxic, unstable and volatile cobalt carbonyl complexes for hydroformylations on a laboratory scale., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Novel heterogeneous catalysts were prepared by impregnation of titania with a solution of cobalt acetate/melamine and subsequent pyrolysis. The resulting materials show an unusual nitrogen-modified titanium structure through partial implementation of nitrogen into the support. Hydrogenation of olefins is achieved using biowaste-derived cobalt chitosan catalysts. Characterization of the optimal Co@Chitosan-700 by STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy), EELS (electron energy loss spectroscopy), PXRD (powder x-ray diffraction), and elemental analysis revealed the formation of a distinctive magnetic composite material with high metallic Co content. The general performance of this catalyst is demonstrated in the hydrogenation of 50 olefins including terminal, internal, and functionalized derivatives, as well as renewables. Using this nonnoble metal composite, hydrogenation of terminal C==C double bonds occurs under very mild and benign conditions (water or methanol, 40° to 60°C). The utility of Co@Chitosan-700 is showcased for efficient hydrogenation of the industrially relevant examples diisobutene, fatty acids, and their triglycerides. Because of the magnetic behavior of this material and water as solvent, product separation and recycling of the catalyst are straightforward.

Due to the complexity of heterogeneous catalysts, identification of active sites and the ways for their experimental design are not inherently straightforward but important for tailored catalyst preparation. The present study reveals the active sites for efficient C-H bond activation in C 1 -C 4 alkanes over ZrO 2 free of any metals or metal oxides usually catalysing this reaction. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that two Zr cations located at an oxygen vacancy are responsible for the homolytic C-H bond dissociation. This pathway differs from that reported for other metal oxides used for alkane activation, where metal cation and neighbouring lattice oxygen form the active site. The concentration of anion vacancies in ZrO 2 can be controlled through adjusting the crystallite size. Accordingly designed ZrO 2 shows industrially relevant activity and durability in non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation and performs superior to state-of-the-art catalysts possessing Pt, CrO x , GaO x or VO x species.

By applying N-doped carbon modified iron-based catalysts, the controlled hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes, especially (iso)quinolones, is achieved. Crucial for activity is the catalyst preparation by pyrolysis of a carbon-impregnated composite, obtained from iron(ii) acetate and N -aryliminopyridines. As demonstrated by TEM, XRD, XPS and Raman spectroscopy, the synthesized material is composed of Fe(0), Fe 3 C and FeN x in a N-doped carbon matrix. The decent catalytic activity of this robust and easily recyclable Fe-material allowed for the selective hydrogenation of various (iso)quinoline derivatives, even in the presence of reducible functional groups, such as nitriles, halogens, esters and amides. For a proof-of-concept, this nanostructured catalyst was implemented in the multistep synthesis of natural products and pharmaceutical lead compounds as well as modification of photoluminescent materials. As such this methodology constitutes the first heterogeneous iron-catalyzed hydrogenation of substituted (iso)quinolones with synthetic importance.

Hydrogenation reactions are essential processes in the chemical industry, giving access to a variety of valuable compounds including fine chemicals, agrochemicals, and pharmachemicals. On an industrial scale, hydrogenations are typically performed with precious metal catalysts or with base metal catalysts, such as Raney nickel, which requires special handling due to its pyrophoric nature. We report a stable and highly active intermetallic nickel silicide catalyst that can be used for hydrogenations of a wide range of unsaturated compounds. The catalyst is prepared via a straightforward procedure using SiO 2 as the silicon atom source. The process involves thermal reduction of Si-O bonds in the presence of Ni nanoparticles at temperatures below 1000°C. The presence of silicon as a secondary component in the nickel metal lattice plays the key role in its properties and is of crucial importance for improved catalytic activity. This novel catalyst allows for efficient reduction of nitroarenes, carbonyls, nitriles, N-containing heterocycles, and unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds. Moreover, the reported catalyst can be used for oxidation reactions in the presence of molecular oxygen and is capable of promoting acceptorless dehydrogenation of unsaturated N-containing heterocycles, opening avenues for H 2 storage in organic compounds. The generality of the nickel silicide catalyst is demonstrated in the hydrogenation of over a hundred of structurally diverse unsaturated compounds. The wide application scope and high catalytic activity of this novel catalyst make it a nice alternative to known general hydrogenation catalysts, such as Raney nickel and noble metal-based catalysts.

Fungi produce heme-containing peroxidases and peroxygenases, flavin-containing oxidases and dehydrogenases, and different copper-containing oxidoreductases involved in the biodegradation of lignin and other recalcitrant compounds. Heme peroxidases comprise the classical ligninolytic peroxidases and the new dye-decolorizing peroxidases, while heme peroxygenases belong to a still largely unexplored superfamily of heme-thiolate proteins. Nevertheless, basidiomycete unspecific peroxygenases have the highest biotechnological interest due to their ability to catalyze a variety of regio- and stereo-selective monooxygenation reactions with H 2 O 2 as the source of oxygen and final electron acceptor. Flavo-oxidases are involved in both lignin and cellulose decay generating H 2 O 2 that activates peroxidases and generates hydroxyl radical. The group of copper oxidoreductases also includes other H 2 O 2 generating enzymes - copper-radical oxidases - together with classical laccases that are the oxidoreductases with the largest number of reported applications to date. However, the recently described lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases have attracted the highest attention among copper oxidoreductases, since they are capable of oxidatively breaking down crystalline cellulose, the disintegration of which is still a major bottleneck in lignocellulose biorefineries, along with lignin degradation. Interestingly, some flavin-containing dehydrogenases also play a key role in cellulose breakdown by directly/indirectly "fueling" electrons for polysaccharide monooxygenase activation. Many of the above oxidoreductases have been engineered, combining rational and computational design with directed evolution, to attain the selectivity, catalytic efficiency and stability properties required for their industrial utilization. Indeed, using ad hoc software and current computational capabilities, it is now possible to predict substrate access to the active site in biophysical simulations, and electron transfer efficiency in biochemical simulations, reducing in orders of magnitude the time of experimental work in oxidoreductase screening and engineering. What has been set out above is illustrated by a series of remarkable oxyfunctionalization and oxidation reactions developed in the frame of an intersectorial and multidisciplinary European RTD project. The optimized reactions include enzymatic synthesis of 1-naphthol, 25-hydroxyvitamin D 3 , drug metabolites, furandicarboxylic acid, indigo and other dyes, and conductive polyaniline, terminal oxygenation of alkanes, biomass delignification and lignin oxidation, among others. Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate how a deviation from the horizontal plane, affects the image quality in two different CBCT-devices., Methods: A phantom head SK150 (RANDO, The Phantom Laboratory, Salem, NY, USA) was examined in two CBCT-units: Accuitomo 80 and Veraviewepocs 3D R100 (J. Morita Mfg. Corp. Kyoto, Japan). The phantom head was placed with the hard palate parallel to the horizontal plane and tilted 20 ° backwards. Exposures were performed with different field of views (FOVs), voxel sizes, slice thicknesses and exposure settings. Effective dose was calculated using PCXMC 2.0 (STUK, Helsinki, Finland). Image quality was assessed using contrast-to-noise-ratio (CNR). Region of interest (ROI) was set at three different levels of the mandibular bone and soft tissue, uni- and bilaterally in small and large FOVs, respectively. CNR values were calculated by CT-value and standard deviation for each ROI. Factor analysis was used to analyze the material., Results: Tilting the phantom head backwards rendered significantly higher mean CNR values regardless of FOV. The effective dose was lower in small than in large FOVs and varied to a larger extent between CBCT-devices in large FOVs., Conclusions: Head position can affect the image quality. Tilting the head backward improved image quality in the mandibular region. However, if influenced by other variables e.g. motion artifacts in a clinical situation, remains to be further investigated., Advances in Knowledge: Image quality assessed using CNR values to investigate the influence of different patient positions and FOVs.
