A method that enabled the formulation of lubricating oleogels using dried cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as an eco-friendly thickener in castor oil was studied. In their dehydrated state, strong hydrogen bonding between nanofibers and high hydrophilicity are the main obstacles to their dispersion in oil. Hence, clusters of dried CNFs had to be previously detached by their dispersion in water. The resulting hydrogels were then subjected to methanol washes to displace the water from the nanofibers. After centrifugation, the methanol-wetted precipitate was readily dispersed in castor oil, forming an oleogel once the methanol was removed. Optimization was conducted in terms of the following variables: (a) hydrogel processing method; (b) hydrogel pH; (c) methanol/hydrogel ratio; (d) number of washes; and (e) oleogel CNF concentration. Their effect on the oleogel linear viscoelastic behavior was analyzed. In general, they demonstrated a prevailing elastic behavior denoted by a well-developed plateau region. The CNF concentration was found to have a more remarkable impact on the oleogels' rheological behavior than any other variable studied. Hence, substantial differences were observed between 1 and 2 wt.%. The CNFs exhibited a very remarkable thickening capacity in castor oil, achieving a plateau modulus of ca. 700 Pa with just 2 wt.%. Moreover, the resulting oleogels maintained a uniform texture even after one year of storage. This indicates that the oleogels were both homogeneous and storage stable, effectively overcoming the stability issues associated with direct dispersion of dried CNFs in castor oil.

Cystoid macular edema (CME) is considered a rare adverse effect of rituximab use, with only a limited number of cases published in the literature. Although its etiopathogenesis is still unknown, its mechanism seems to be related to a transient elevation of cytokines after rituximab infusion resulting in an increased permeability of retinal vessels. We report the first case of rituximab-induced CME in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), where rituximab was used to treat hematological complications. A month after the 2nd infusion, the patient developed blurred vision and decreased visual acuity in the right eye. An optic coherence tomography (OCT) was performed, being diagnosed with CME. Rituximab was then discontinued, exhibiting a complete resolution of the condition within 4 weeks. Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is a rare form of interstitial pulmonary disease, which has been described in association with a wide range of autoimmune disorders. Although the association of this entity with Sjogren's syndrome is well known, only a few cases are reported in relation to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The aim of this paper is to review the cases reported in literature to date, as well as to describe the characteristics of these patients including the new case presented herein. We will be focusing on the case of a 36-year-old female patient diagnosed with SLE on hydroxychloroquine treatment who develops pleuritic chest pain and progressive dyspnea after 3 years of follow-up. The chest CT scan showed pleural thickening and both multiple and bilateral micronodules. A lung biopsy was also performed, revealing an infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and histiocytes in the alveolar septa suggestive of LIP. After conducting a review of the literature, we identified seven other cases describing SLE in association with LIP. The majority of them were young women, and LIP tends to appear early in the course of the disease, even as a form of initial presentation in some cases. Symptoms included cough, dyspnea, and pleuritic pain, with the exception of one case which was asymptomatic. It is noteworthy that half of the patients were positive for anti-SSA/anti-SSB autoantibodies, and some of them also met criteria for Sjogren's syndrome. Based on the response surface methodology, a rheological and tribological study carried out on eco-friendly lubricants is described. Such ecolubricants consisted of fibrillated or crystalline nanocellulose in vegetable oil (castor oil, high oleic sunflower oil or their mixtures). Cellulose nanoparticles showed noticeable friction-reducing and anti-wear properties within the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes, which were found to be dependent on nanocellulose concentration, base oil composition and applied normal force. In general, both types of nanocellulose performed equally well. An excellent tribological performance, with large wear scar diameter reductions, was achieved with 3.3 wt.% (or higher) nanocellulose dispersions in castor oil-rich mixtures. The observed behavior was explained on the basis of enhanced viscosity of castor oil-rich suspensions and the preferential action of the most polar components, nanocellulose and ricinoleic acid, in the vicinity of the contact surfaces.

This research work aims to explore the development of functional nanocellulose-based biolubricants, which allow for an electro-active control of the friction behavior. With this purpose, the influence of both nanocellulose concentration and electric field strength on the lubricant's electrorheological behavior was analyzed. Electric field strengths up to 4 kV/mm were imposed and two different kinds of nanocellulose were studied as the polarizable particulate phase: cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Nanocellulose particles were added to castor oil at weight fractions ranging from 0 to 6 wt %. All dispersions exhibited a noticeable variation in their dielectric constant, but not in their conductivity, within a wide frequency range between 1 Hz and 200 kHz, and their dielectric behavior was significantly affected by the particle weight fraction. Noteworthily, it was found that the critical value of nanocellulose concentration, 4 wt %, at which the electro-viscous effect displayed by these dispersions was constrained, yielding a limiting electrorheological (ER) behavior. In addition, the dynamic yield stress dependence on the electric field strength showed a critical value within the interval of 0.8-1.2 kV/mm, suggesting a nonlinear conduction model for these nanocellulose-based ER dispersions. Finally, a maximum leak current intensity for 1 wt % CNF or CNC dispersions and an asymptotic decay at higher concentrations were observed. We conclude that both CNC and CNF nanoparticles have demonstrated that they can endow castor oil with significant ER properties, which remarkably reduced the friction coefficient within the boundary and mixed lubrication regions at electric field strengths lower than 40 V.

Objectives: To evaluate psychopathological status and stress level from a sample with SLE; compare mental functioning and stress levels between women with SLE and healthy women; determine whether disease duration, disease activity, cumulative organ damage and stress have an influence on psychopathological symptoms in SLE patients; and evaluate whether perception of stress is related to SLE severity., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 425 participants; 202 women with SLE, with an average age (SD) of 36.61 (10.15), and 223 healthy women, with age-matched controls. The assessment included the clinical characteristics (disease duration, SLE activity, cumulative organ damage, pharmacotherapy), the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and the Perceived Stress Scale. Descriptive, comparative, univariate and multivariate analysis were performed., Results: SLE patients showed psychopathological alterations in the somatisation, obsessive-compulsive and positive discomfort subscales of SCL-90-R. Women with SLE reported significantly higher scores on the psychopathological dimensions and perceived stress compared to healthy women, except for paranoid ideation. Disease duration, SLE activity, cumulative organ damage, and perceived stress were shown to be significant predictors of psychopathological manifestations, explaining a range, between 20 and 43%, of variance across SCL-90-R dimensions. Moreover, perceived stress was related to SLE activity, after controlling for psychopathological dimensions., Conclusions: The psychopathological manifestations in SLE appeared to be influenced by perceived stress, disease duration, disease activity and cumulative organ damage. In turn, perceived stress was associated with disease severity. This knowledge may contribute to a more comprehensive perspective of these manifestations in the SLE population in the clinical setting.

This study aims to extend the range of applications of tragacanth gum by studying its incorporation into bioplastics formulation, exploring the influence that different gum contents (0-20wt.%) exert over the thermomechanical and water uptake properties of bioplastics based on egg white albumen protein (EW). The effect of plasticizer nature was also evaluated through the modification of the water/glycerol ratio within the plasticizer fraction (fixed at 40wt.%). The addition of tragacanth gum generally yielded an enhancement of the water uptake capacity, being doubled at the highest content. Conversely, presence of tragacanth gum resulted in a considerable decrease in the bioplastic mechanical properties: both tensile strength and maximum elongation were reduced up to 75% approximately when compared to the gum-free system. Ageing of selected samples was also studied, revealing an important effect of storage time when tragacanth gum is present, possibly due to its hydrophilic character., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) are small herbivorous insects found on all continents except Antarctica. They are extremely invasive, and many species are serious agricultural pests. They are also emerging models for studies of the evolution of genetic systems, endosymbiosis and plant-insect interactions. ScaleNet was launched in 1995 to provide insect identifiers, pest managers, insect systematists, evolutionary biologists and ecologists efficient access to information about scale insect biological diversity. It provides comprehensive information on scale insects taken directly from the primary literature. Currently, it draws from 23,477 articles and describes the systematics and biology of 8194 valid species. For 20 years, ScaleNet ran on the same software platform. That platform is no longer viable. Here, we present a new, open-source implementation of ScaleNet. We have normalized the data model, begun the process of correcting invalid data, upgraded the user interface, and added online administrative tools. The accumulation of phosphogypsum waste from the fertilizer industries, which remain in regulated stacks occupying considerable land resources, is causing significant environment problems worldwide. In that sense, the scientific community is being pressured to find alternative ways for their disposal. In this research, we propose a novel application for phosphogypsum waste, as a modifier of bitumen for flexible road pavements. Viscous flow tests carried out on bitumen modified with a phosphogypsum waste and doped with sulfuric acid demonstrated an extraordinary increase in viscosity, at 60°C, when compared to a counterpart sample which had been modified with gypsum, the main component of phosphogypsum. Similarly, a significant improvement in the viscoelastic response of the resulting material at high temperatures was also found. FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) scans provided evidences of the existence of chemical reactions involving phosphorus, as revealed by a new absorption band from 1060 to 1180cm(-1), related to COP vibrations. This result points at phosphorus contained in the phosphogypsum impurities to be the actual "modifying" substance. Objective: The objectives of this paper are to compare sexual function and distress in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and in healthy controls; to determine the association between disease characteristics, quality of life, psychopathology and sexual function; and to compare sexual function and distress of women according to age (reproductive and nonreproductive-age women)., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 120 participants; 65 women had SLE (aged 18-65), and 55 were healthy, age-matched controls. The assessment included the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), Short Form 36 health survey (SF-36), socio-demographic characteristics and the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) and SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) in SLE patients only., Results: Of 65 eligible patients with SLE, 61 (94%) responded; of 55 control subjects, 53 (96%) responded. The FSFI total score and subscale scores for desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm and pain were significantly lower in patients with SLE. More somatization, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobia, paranoid ideation, psychoticism, the Positive Symptom Total (PST), Positive Score Discomfort Index (PSDI), the use of psychotropic drugs, general health, vitality, social function, emotional role and mental health were significantly associated with changes in the patient group's sexuality. Multivariate analysis indicated that depression, PSDI and vitality were the variables significantly associated with low sexual function in patients with SLE., Conclusions: Women with SLE reported significantly impaired sexual function compared with healthy controls. Impaired sexual function was associated with somatization, obsessive-compulsive behavior, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, hostility, paranoid ideation, psychoticism, PST, higher scores in the PSDI subscale, vitality, social functioning and mental health. These results indicate that, in daily practice, inquiring about sexuality and quality of life and screening for psychopathology are important for every patient with SLE, irrespective of their clinical characteristics.
